SNIC23's SparkPeople Blog SNIC23's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community My 6 month journey to flabbiness - It wasn't all bad. I haven’t blogged in so long you might be concerned that I died in the middle of a juice fast. Not a chance!

By mid-September last year I was within a pound or two of my goal weight and feeling fantastic. Of course that isn’t the end of the story, life goes on after weight loss and fitness goals are met, right? Apparently, and food is involved.

I bought a couple of plane tickets, grabbed my daughter and we flew off to visit my sister in the Midwest. My daughter had neve... Thu, 6 Mar 2014 12:02:15 EST Maybe (for me) it's not so much the calories... My body has been hanging onto its fat supply like there really may not be a tomorrow in spite of how hard I've been working to shake it. Well, I CAN shake it, and that's the point. I don't want it jiggling like that anymore when I do!

I'm not overweight anymore, I'm just not in ideal shape. Since I began my journey I did lose weight in the form of fat and I began to build some muscle. I am fairly happy with the progress, but thought for sure I would be further along by now. I am w... Tue, 13 Aug 2013 21:25:07 EST 10 things every woman MUST know about ovarian cancer This is an interesting article from Mirror in the UK and important for ALL women to read. Here's the link:

ence/10-things-every-woman-must-118012

Sneak peak...

It's known as the 'silent killer' but now campaigners are trying to make a big noise about one of our most common cancers.

FACT 1

This is the fifth most common can... Thu, 25 Jul 2013 12:25:20 EST Breakfast of champions! It was so beautiful, but I forgot to take a picture. I will describe it instead... it was a small mound of organic, gluten free cooked steel cut oats sitting in a periwinkle colored Fiestaware bowl covered in organic blueberries and sliced organic strawberries with a splash or two of coconut milk, organic of course. A pinch of salt made it perfect.

I sat next to my husband and thoroughly enjoyed my breakfast. He was having the same thing but he also brown sugar in his and a slice ... Wed, 24 Jul 2013 12:58:59 EST Calorie ranges based on fitness tracking? I believe I have made a mistake. I thought it would be a good idea to switch, but I was immediately alarmed when I saw this, after not even having exercised yet today:

Your Daily Calorie Goal: 2,351 - 2,701
Remaining Calories Today: 1,933 - 2,283

Whoa... WHAT??!!! Before I switched it was 1200 - 1500 daily and I was eating, on average, 1300 calories per day and not losing weight. I keep gaining and losing the same 2 - 3 pounds (feel free to look at my exerc... Wed, 10 Jul 2013 15:56:05 EST GAINING WEIGHT with FitBit Flex! Was I not just ranting about this crazy contraption just the other day saying that I would be gaining weight before long? Well that didn't take long at all, I stepped on the scale today and it went up 3 pounds. 3 POUNDS! I realize that this is likely not all fat pounds, but it's pretty discouraging. I began my health journey the beginning of March this year, 4 months ago. The first month I lost 7 pounds. Whoo-hoo! I was SO happy and people were asking me constantly what I was doing differentl... Wed, 3 Jul 2013 18:12:58 EST Mac & Cheese makes for a productive morning? I made an amazing pan of mac & cheese with veggies last night. It was low fat and high in protein.

Recipe link:

l.asp?recipe=2522924

I had forbidden myself this dish because of calories, but it fit in just fine with dinner and nutritional ranges. Yes I know, we're not supposed to forbid ourselves from food items, but I don't have that kind of relationshi... Tue, 2 Jul 2013 11:49:44 EST My First Year Smoke Free!!! and I love SparkPeople! One year ago today I made a decision to quit smoking.

It was a difficult decision, but once I finally made it I stuck to it. I can't believe it's been a year!

I was terrified of quitting. I didn't know what I would do with myself, how my routine would change, how I would be around my smoking friends, and worse, my smoking husband! But al... Sat, 29 Jun 2013 13:24:08 EST Day 7 with FitBit
Unfortunately, and I hate to say it, but the more I use it the less I like it.

It is great at tracking your sleep quality/quantity. In spite of wearing it on my non-dominant hand it overestimates my steps and doesn't log actual activity for what it is - actual activity. I am becoming more and more disappointed with it with each passing day. Last night before I went to bed I logged onto the FitBit site to see... Fri, 21 Jun 2013 10:43:32 EST FitBit Flex update - Day 4 I'm not sure that my FitBit Flex is entirely honest. On my activity log it says I've taken 12,000 steps, but I'm sure it's closer to 5,000. It thinks I've burned a gazillion calories, but I'll bet it's closer to 500. It is dead-on on the sleep report, but I'm a little leery of the rest of the data.

When SparkPeople imports my food over to my FitBit account FitBit often doubles my caloric intake sending me into a temporary panic. There are definitely some bugs that need to be worke... Mon, 17 Jun 2013 23:55:49 EST Pets or rat control?

This seemed appropriate after what I witnessed yesterday afternoon. It was about 104º so I was hiding inside. I heard an unfamiliar dog barking in my yard. I looked out the window and saw a little white dog racing through my back yard (no fences) with a coyote on it's tail. The coyote was literally running almost next to it. I have never seen dogs run that fast and have never witnessed a coyote chasing a dog, just... Mon, 17 Jun 2013 11:46:24 EST Dealing with the desert heat?

My sentiments... exactly! Sun, 16 Jun 2013 23:24:59 EST Yoga, FitBit ready and blow-up pool Yesterday was pretty much a down day. I guess my body did need a break, as some Sparkers mentioned. I did get on the recumbent bicycle for a short 20-something minute ride after dinner just so I wouldn't break my current streak. After that it was back to bed for the evening. My workout must have looked something like this:

My daughter picked up a couple yoga videos that were recommended by a dear Sparker. The... Sat, 15 Jun 2013 17:06:20 EST Feeling icky, but my FitBit came early to cheer me up! I hope everyone is having a fabulous Friday!

I had a strange feeling today and felt very tired for the first half of the day. When my husband came home he inquired as to why I hadn't showered. Heck, I don't know, I just don't have any energy. Since finding SP I have had TONS of energy so it was strange to feel so drained. I jumped in the shower around 4 in the afternoon. (I can go to work looking like a bum because I have a home office, so that wasn't an issue.) After I got out of ... Sat, 15 Jun 2013 00:13:18 EST Goal met! I can wear the jeans I wore before I quit smoking!!! Work is getting busier with this nasty heat (think A/C company in the desert during the summer) but I am still stealing away time for my workouts - indoors, of course! Jillian Michaels DVD's, Yoga on YouTube and Amazon, an elliptical machine and a recumbent bicycle help me to keep moving. A LOT!

I am finally noticing an ever so slight reduction in the squishiness around my mid section, where I tend to gain weight. <img src=""... Thu, 13 Jun 2013 19:01:35 EST For you, Beach_Nut!

Thought of you when I saw this today.

I am so ordering this!
Wed, 12 Jun 2013 19:06:29 EST Visit with the doc & working out

I went to see my Naturopathid doc this morning for a check-up. Of course he wants me to get in for a PAP smear and ... shudder ... a mammogram! I know people feel very strongly about having mammograms done, but I personally do not intend to get one done at this point in time. I may POSSIBLY consent to an ultrasound of my breast tissue, but that's it. If radiology can't perform this with a req then it's just not happ... Wed, 12 Jun 2013 14:30:40 EST I may not want to but that won't stop me!

I'm taking a break from my computer monitor and work to make my body sweat. My goal is 30 minutes for now, it's almost 9 AM and I'd normally be done by now. The warmer the weather gets the busier I am with work so summer will definitely be a challenge.

I will be pushing through today's challenges so I can wake up stronger to do battle and win tomorrows.

Wishing you a wonderful day today! Tue, 11 Jun 2013 11:52:38 EST Working out (fun!) - during the workday

I am lacking energy today to get out of my office and work out. Because I have such a huge pile of work on my desk I keep putting off working out. In my mind I know that I will have a much clearer head and be able to get through all this work once I've had a good sweat session but my body is dragging. I should quit putting it off and get to it!

I hope everyone is having a great Monday!
Mon, 10 Jun 2013 15:26:08 EST Happy Friday!

Need I say more?

247 Sat, 8 Jun 2013 01:16:21 EST No giving up!
I won't quit.

I may be on top of a huge plateau, but I will not quit.

My youngest turned 21 today. She's already gotten her drivers license changed so it not longer says "Under 21". I'll take her to dinner tonight and we'll have the best frozen sangria, I know just the place! And for me, salad for dinner or I'll never get off of this plateau.

Happy almost Friday!

Thu, 6 Jun 2013 15:36:34 EST Growing old?

Isn't it?

381 Wed, 5 Jun 2013 11:22:02 EST Dear me...

We all need to write ourselves this note from time to time.

I am going to love myself more today than yesterday and even more tomorrow. I deserve to be healthy and feel good.

And so do you!
Tue, 4 Jun 2013 11:31:48 EST Pull-ups are for girls At least that's what I keep telling myself. I haven't tried them in a while because I don't usually have access to a place to try them out.

So my new goal is to whip out a set of perfect pull-ups. I want a strong, confident body and I WILL earn it!

Happy Monday!
213 Mon, 3 Jun 2013 13:40:06 EST I may not be there yet...
Everything we do every day makes a difference. Make it a positive difference!
Sun, 2 Jun 2013 19:25:31 EST Sweat is fat crying

I will definitely be thinking of this tomorrow when I'm working out and sweat is running down my face!

I hope everyone is having a fantastic weekend!
213 Sat, 1 Jun 2013 22:59:58 EST 23 years ago today - what a day that was! I was 18-years-old and giving birth to my second child, our first daughter. Her name was Amanda Nicole and she would have turned 23 today. Where does the time go? We lost her to a vehicle accident almost 9 years ago. She would have turned 23 today.
I 382 baby girl!!!

I should add that time really does heal all wounds.
Thu, 30 May 2013 20:15:55 EST Rant Alert: I need to learn more about me and how I work I'm Sparking in front of my lunch salad because I am pressed for time today. I normally sit and eat somewhere that does not include electronic devices in the vicinity and I prefer to keep it that way. Today I wanted to blog this out before I forgot and before I finished lunch and ran out of time.

Spark member JENSHAINES said to me today regarding my plateau frustration that it has taken her a long time to begin to learn what works and what doesn't work for her. I believe that, app... Thu, 30 May 2013 18:08:10 EST My first yoga experience - via on-demand! Until recently I haven't had much interest in yoga, which is strange since I'm really a very Earthy person. It wasn't that I was ever opposed, I just wasn't interested. Until now.

I am an Amazon Prime member so I checked out the yoga videos available there and settled on Denise Austin's Hot Body Yoga for starters. It was easy enough to follow for a beginner and I didn't injure myself or any of my surroundings. Yay! After the first 30 minute session there was another 30 minute sess... Tue, 28 May 2013 22:59:05 EST FitBit order update! I got my FitBit Flex ordered but now I'm wondering if I would rather order the FitBit One, which is actually available now and has great reviews.

Hmmm....

29 Sat, 25 May 2013 12:47:19 EST Stern conversation with my younger self I say stern, but what I would tell myself in a stern way is to relax. Not everything has to be perfect, and it won't be anyway.

I would tell my 31 year-old-self: the saggy, stretched out skin on your belly from bearing 3 children is not going to tighten up no matter how thin or fit you get so either get the tummy tuck NOW while you're still young enough to enjoy it or put it out of your head forever because you know you're not ever going to be able to put yourself through unnecessa... Thu, 23 May 2013 14:38:22 EST Seriously, don't ever do that again! I had no idea how dependent I had become on Spark People. I'm sure there are a lot of us like that. Well NOW I KNOW!

I felt lost, all I could think of to do was read my Spark Solution book instead. I wasn't sure how many calories I'd eaten because I always track my food I depend on SP to tell me how many calories I have left to consume instead of paying closer attention to how many calories each food has that I've eaten. Big mistake on my part. My guestimate is always far lower th... Fri, 17 May 2013 11:01:26 EST Bummer, no FitBit in MY future I finally decided to go ahead and spend the money on a FitBit. I read reviews and chose the Flex model - in slate. Upon ordering I see it's backordered 6 - 8 weeks so I tried ordering the black one, which is backordered 8 - 10 weeks.

*sigh*

Of course it is. Okay fine, I can wait. I chose slate again and over and over I am told that my credit card information is incorrect or that I have not entered my credit card information at all, neither of which is actually true. Th... Thu, 16 May 2013 14:32:45 EST Such a compliment! My husband and I are adding a new life insurance policy and took the physical this morning. After the man took my blood pressure he asked me if I was a runner. Heck no, me? I am by no means a runner, my knee joints have never allowed for it. He said that I must exercise then. Yup, I do intense cardio on a daily basis and have since the beginning of March. My resting heart rate lying in bed first thing in the morning back then was 64 or 62 and today, even after exercising and being up for 5 ho... Sat, 11 May 2013 19:59:56 EST If only working out could be my job! I remember going to the gym when I was younger and the aerobics instructor was about my age, in fantastic shape and she had a great time teaching classes. Then she would go out on the floor and train other women in their workouts. What a great job that would be!

I do love working out and cannot believe I let SO many years go by without doing it. Shame on me!
28
It demolishes stress and it makes me feel fantastic! I don't get depressed anymore, I have more en... Fri, 10 May 2013 14:57:06 EST Productive week so far! With my daughter's help I have managed to clear my husband's closet of unnecessary stuff. Then we tackled the laundry room! Who needs all this stuff? We took a truck load to the thrift store to donate and while we were there we slipped inside to pick up some summer clothing at a great deal. We bought shorts, summer blouses, skirts, a couple summer dresses and some workout clothes for a fraction of the price of buying new. Besides, how many times can I possibly wear this stuff before I will ne... Fri, 10 May 2013 01:28:48 EST It's not win or lose, it's win AND lose! I have comitted to not stepping on the scale for a month, which is a good thing. I had been eating within my nutritional needs and exercising regularly but I keep feeling like it isn't enough. Then I step on the scale and sure enough, it isn't moving. That being said, I have not been discouraged by this. I have felt wonderful every step of the way, give or take a few minor aches and pains.

I am torn, do I eat more so I can keep exercising like I have been? Or would it be best to e... Wed, 8 May 2013 01:50:50 EST Feeling is believing It's been 4 weeks since I started working on changing my ways. So far I have:

1) Cut dairy out of my diet - for health reasons
2) Increased my veggies & fruit intake by 5 - 8 servings a day
3) Prepare 95% of my meals - and prepare them from scratch
4) Began walking 2 - 6 miles a day - until my knees argued the impossibility of another walk and won 2 weeks ago
5) Bought an elliptical to replace my daily walks and LOVE using that daily
6) Use the recumbent bi... Tue, 9 Apr 2013 20:32:31 EST family curse=no posterior ... but wait! I come from a long line of family who have no posterior. We all have to wear belts or suspenders to hold up our pants. When we gain weight we do so only from the belly button up. Being a woman, this can be ever so frustrating! At least when you have an hourglass shape you have the ability to gain a pound or two and still have a waist line. When you have an apple shape you cannot afford to even walk past a bakery.

On the bright side I received two similar compliments the other day,... Thu, 28 Mar 2013 19:04:03 EST Today's theme: Smiling! You ever have one of those days when your veggies keep falling off of your fork and no matter how hard you try by the time you get your fork to your mouth it's empty again? I'm having a day like that and if it weren't for my willingness to eat with my fingers I think I'd probably stave today. That being said, I should also point out that I was smiling probably more than I should have been at my clumsiness. My husband thought he'd add some additional flavor to my fresh veggie salad sans leafy ... Thu, 21 Mar 2013 19:25:26 EST Embracing my cellulite I started my cellulite collection very early in life (25 years ago almost to the day) so it goes without saying that I've got more than my fair share of dimples at this point. I was pregnant and didn't notice the bumps on my backside that creeped down my legs until after my first child was born. I lost all of my baby weight and went back to being my usual underweight size within a month, but darn if those bumps didn't stick around. Then I had a couple more pregnancies resulting in more babies... Mon, 18 Mar 2013 16:27:53 EST SparkPeople recipes are delicious! I make incredible vegetarian chili, always have. It is my favorite recipe and the recipe that my family begs me to make. However I opted to give the SparkPeople chili recipe a try tonight, and I really wasn't expecting much. It actually turned out to be a decent meal, carrots and all! The only thing I changed was that I added a diced red jalapeno, a diced green bell pepper and about 3/4 cup of water because it was a little dry. I love the recipes here and look forward to trying out more in th... Tue, 12 Mar 2013 22:57:57 EST What a day! I woke up this morning feeling sad because I remembered that today marks 6 months since I last saw my little Chihuahua girl, Charlie. She was my best little friend and such a huge part of my life. 6 months ago I came home to let her and the other doggies in the house and she wasn't with the rest of dogs. Part of the reason her loss has been so painful for me is because I feel responsible, I should have let her in the house while I was gone and she would still be here. I will never know what h... Thu, 7 Mar 2013 23:14:24 EST Day 5 and I'm still alive! 104

I felt a little sluggish on my morning walk today. I ate a good breakfast, had my snack and my planned lunch and did a cardio video. Now that I've gotten a little cardio into my day I feel energized again.
224

Yesterday I felt like a million bucks! I exercised more than I have in the past year put together (which really isn't saying a whole lot), I soaked up a little natural vitamin D, ate fabulously from the meal pl... Wed, 6 Mar 2013 16:15:45 EST My very first blog entry I found SparkPeople by accident. I found a great recipe a couple of weeks ago, printed it out and made it for dinner. It was delicious and I couldn't wait to have the leftovers for lunch the next day. I came back to rate this recipe and started snooping around. What a wonderful place to stumble upon. I wish I had found my way here sooner, but better late than never, right?

252

So here I am all registered and ready to do this. I started last week and have fou...
