SNEEKI's SparkPeople Blog SNEEKI's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community I never realised being a fanatic was so easy! So all through this weight loss journey I've been fairly fanatical about what I eat and my treadmill workouts. If I have to miss a workout or I'm not in a position to track my food I've always tried to err on the side of caution and go for a walk or keep a mental tally of my guessed intake. And has all worked out pretty well.

I haven't been 100 perfect, there have been slip-ups. The 23kg I've lost is still missing and that's all that matters. It's not about the highs or the low... Thu, 18 Apr 2013 17:30:58 EST Messing with food and exercise - controlled apathy experiment. As I approach my target weight (for fat loss, not muscle gain), I have been trying to taper my weight loss to gently ease down to the the 75kg I'm aiming for. I figure I don't want to power down to 75kg then suddenly slam on the anchors and start eating at a weight-maintenace level rather than a weight-loss. In my mind this is just as bad as eating poorly then suddenly starting a crash diet.

I know my diet and exercise will be changing soon and I've been a little worried that st... Sat, 6 Apr 2013 21:43:18 EST Time for some serious outdoor walking Wow, it's been a while since my last post. I've had a cold or something for about 10 days now. It's not really bad which makes me wonder if it is an allergy cause by all the dry grass turning to dust over here (we have a drought at the moment). So my enthusiasm has been lacking but I've managed to keep up my food and treadmill routines.

On the matter of walking. My wife and I bought some day packs this weekend in preparation for a new hobby we hope to get into this year. Sceni... Sun, 10 Mar 2013 17:27:31 EST Weight loss - Not as hard as society say's it is. I was just posting a thank you to another members page and it occurred to me that this weight loss journey has not been as difficult as I expected it would be back at the outset.

I've tried to lose weight before and have lost and gained it back, twice. The second time it was on SP but both times it was due to injuries flaring up because I over did things. If you try to do too much too soon you risk breaking yourself and ending back at square one. I thought I had to thrash myself... Tue, 26 Feb 2013 20:05:10 EST 20KG GONE! Wow, 2 posts in one day. No wonder I'm not getting any work done!

Well I thought if I was going to moan about a binge night I should at least celebrate a milestone. The scales told me today that I've lost 20kg. It took an extra 2 weeks to get here but considering xmas was slap-bang in the middle I'm still pretty chuffed.

All I can say is my life has seriously changed in the last few months. I know it sounds like a broken record but weight loss definitely improves you... Mon, 25 Feb 2013 17:35:36 EST Damn you Mr 3am Meat Pie! Ah the best laid plans... out the window they went again. :)

My wife and I attended a Linkin Park concert last Thursday. It involved a trip to Auckland and an overnight stay with a friend. It was supposed to be "dinner and a show" but turned into "dinner and a show and 4 hours drinking cocktails in a karaoke bar".

So no doubt a few billion cals were consumed that night thanks to the cocktails and the beef steak & Cheese pie I bought on the way home. I was starving as ... Mon, 25 Feb 2013 15:07:42 EST Tanita Scales - Getting a correct reading So for some reason I took a full diagnostic reading off my scales the other night, (I usually jump on in the morning before I fill myself up with a day of eating and drinking).

I was amazed to see the scales claim my body fat and estimated age was incredibly low compared to the previous week so it started alarm bells ringing. What could be off?

The only physical difference I could imagine was the fact that I would have been better hydrated at night than first thing in... Tue, 19 Feb 2013 14:39:28 EST Should I lose another 5kg? Time for re-evaluation. I've been focused on getting down to 80kg for so long that I've never taken the time to contemplate if I should in fact aim lower. I picked at the 80kg goal as I remembered being "OK" with my body when I used to be that weight.

To be honest, when I was 100kg last year, (and down-in-the-dumps), the 80kg goal seemed a bit of a pipe dream. Anything less would have seemed ludicrous! Now that I'm 1kg away from what was my ultimate goal I'm thinking I've sold myself short.
<B... Wed, 13 Feb 2013 17:43:19 EST Another week - Another KG range I managed to sneak into the 81's this morning.

Due to the couple of plateaus I had earlier this year I will not be making my target of 80kg flat for my anniversary on the 20th. But I should be in the 80-point-something range, so as long as I don't pig-out on a big anniversary dinner I should hit 80 flat the following week. So not a large miss.

It will be the first time I've been that weight for 20 years!

80kg is also my target weight to start off my full... Tue, 12 Feb 2013 16:31:06 EST Suspicious Weight - I trust ye not, scales! I've noticed that recently it's been very hard to get what I would consider an accurate weight. The change in eating habits and food types means certain regular bodily functions have changed their timing. Now I never know if I'm carrying "extra" baggage internally :).
I've found that averaging the weight over a 3 day weight period is better than just picking 1 weigh in day and tossing the dice.
I've also noticed that I have to watch my water intake a lot more. Now that I am more ... Wed, 6 Feb 2013 14:46:44 EST Finally off the 85kg plateau! Well I have spent that last few days hovering around the low to mid 84's so I'll take that as a legit drop from the 85kg range. Finally.
I'll be starting some light free weight work this week but I'll be taking it slow. I don't want to come this far than tweak my back or knee and end up out of action.
I have 8 hours of indoor airsoft to play next weekend which is something I'm really looking forward to. I played a couple of hours the other night as way extremely happy with my im... Sun, 27 Jan 2013 15:52:14 EST Argh! Back at 85kg Well it turns out being 84kg was too good to be true. I'm guessing that due to the spate of warm weather we have been experiencing that I may have been a tad dehydrated at that weigh in (even though I'd been good with my water intake).

I'm hovering around 85kg again this week. Damn you 85! But I'm being super strict with my food and exercise so I'm hoping i will be a legitimate 84 something at this weekends weigh in.

On a brighter note, my digital scales that use bla... Tue, 22 Jan 2013 15:50:37 EST 75% stage of my Goal passed So after the Christmas / New Year slump where I seemed to hover at 85kg I have finally broken into 84kg range. I'm currently 84.2kg which means I'm now 3 quarters of my way towards my goal of 80kg. I should hopefully be down to 83 something in the next couple of days. Total weight loss so far 16.2kg (35.7lb).

It's great being back at work and adopting my old successful routine rather than the daily holiday crap-shoot of workout interruptions, unplanned meals and general daily cr... Sat, 19 Jan 2013 18:35:30 EST Time for a new goal Well I made it to my birthday hitting 86.4kg. As expected (with xmas only 3 days prior) I did not hit 86kg flat, but it is still a win in my book as it marks exactly 14kg (30.9lb) lost since I started this whole process.
With the new year looming (and more alcohol and snacks being fired about), it is time for a new goal. The next big date on my calendar id my anniversary on Feb 20th. I plan to hit 80kg then although I'm entering a time where I feel I can start concentrating on buildin... Fri, 28 Dec 2012 16:56:59 EST Will be testing the "exercise improved mood" theory Well last night wasn't too great. My cat "Freddie" got run over. I've only had him for a year but he had become my little buddy. As I work from home it was nice to have someone around to talk to. He would even sleep on his bed next to my monitor so I had company during the long hours building website.
Oh, well.
So I'm gonna be jumping on the treadmill today and will be interested if it has an effect on my mood... Thu, 20 Dec 2012 19:37:04 EST 13kg down! My weigh in this morning showed that I was exactly 13kg lighter than my heaviest weight of 100.4 kg recorded in August this year. Unfortunately I lost a few kg before getting back into SP so I'm only showing a 10kg loss at the moment. :) Fri, 14 Dec 2012 16:41:46 EST Weeks fly by and so do the scale reading! Wow, things always speed up this time of year. I can't believe another week has flown by already! Luckily this also means the weight feels like it's just dropping off super quick. Every time I turn around once I'm a KG lighter.
According to my SP projection I am right on track to hit my goal of 86KG for my birthday at the end of this month. After that I think I'll have to set a new goal of 80KG (ish) for my anniversary in Feb. This will depend on muscle which I will be working on de... Thu, 13 Dec 2012 16:02:22 EST A week of getting back on track After our hectic week last week, it has been great to get back on track this week. Food is being monitored, treadmill is being used, water is being consumed. It's great to see the results too. As soon as things were sorted the weight started dropping off and the energy and attitude both went up.
I've recovered statistically from our holiday, guests and general madness, not that I went off the rails during that time. Thankfully, having been on SP for a while I was very conscious of ... Thu, 6 Dec 2012 16:35:19 EST Plateau - it's time to go! Well, what a time the last week has been. A trip the the Hobbit Red Carpet event, a wedding, surprise guest staying over and no internet connection or treadmill for most of that time! An SP-cardio-diet nightmare!
The aftermath is not as bad as it could be. I'm about 400g lighter than my last weigh in though probably a good 500g heavier than I would have been had it been a normal week. Still, it could be worse - I could have GIANED weight!
So it's all hands to battle stations to ... Wed, 5 Dec 2012 14:12:58 EST Slow and stead wins the race... Well, as my progress graph anticipated, I hit my initial goal of 91kg today. This is 10 days ahead of the original goal date of Dec 1st, so I'm pretty chuffed with that.
More importantly though, I have not experienced any back or knee pain during this 7kg down sizing (9kg if you count the 2kg I lost before jumping bask on SP). This makes a nice change and confirms to me that steady walking at an incline on the treadmill is the safest way for my to work on my cardio.
All my previ... Tue, 20 Nov 2012 22:03:46 EST Target weight too easy - Had to update! Well, I am 2 weeks out from my initial target weight date (91kg on 1-12-12). But I'm only a tiny 400g away from reaching it! 400g in 2 weeks? I'm dropping twice that every week at the moment so that goal won't do!
Luckily my birthday is in a few weeks so that gave me the perfect reason to set a new short term goal. New target is 86kg on the 28th of Dec.
With a bit of dedication I'm sure it will be as easy to reach as my first goal. (Fingers crossed). Fri, 16 Nov 2012 23:08:49 EST Nearly 8kg lost (17lb) and having a good time Well, it has been a few months. Last time I was trying to lose weight was at the start of this year so I could enjoy myself on holiday in Aussie. Of course all that cafe and restaurant dinning allowed me to gain everything back.
A series of health issues and despondency since the trip helped me get back up to an embarrassing 100.4kg. All that hard work ruined again. So Embarrassed was I that I could not even post on SP till now.
About 3 months ago I lost a couple of kg just by ... Thu, 8 Nov 2012 16:36:35 EST So much for the first day... Well, talk about a change in plans. Contrary to what I though I'd be doing yesterday the universe decided it would be better if I worked till 11pm. So no tready for me. Luckily my desk is a lot clearer today so i can fly under the radar and squeeze my cardio in.
Off to the store soon to make sure i have a supply of healthy food in the house so i don't resort to eating something I shouldn't! Tue, 3 Apr 2012 18:19:26 EST Hello SP - the holiday is over Well it's time to get back to "Real life" again. I spent a couple of great weeks in Australia with my wife and friend. Got back last week but it's been a bit of a write-off while I've caught up with work and other obligations.
Today looks like it's gonna be under control so it's back on the SP points and back on the treadmill. Not looking forward to the treadmill cos I know it is gonna feel hard after 3 weeks away from it. Luckily we did a LOT of walking in Aussie so that might sof... Mon, 2 Apr 2012 18:35:42 EST Ah fat... I almost forgot what you tasted like. Wow. What a terrible day. The last day in a week of long hours glued to my workstation. It's the worst part about going on holiday - cramming in all the work before you go. This is only trumped but the scramble to catch up when you return!

So, it was a "no thought food" day today. No time for SP until now, at 11.50pm. This is when I find out how much damage I did just shovelling wads of lightly warmed leftover mac and cheese into my face between jobs...

Ouch. Not ... Fri, 9 Mar 2012 05:53:09 EST On Target with little effort required... Well my last weigh in put me slap-bang in the middle of the 95kg range. Checking my progress chart shows me that I'm maintaining a path just below the required levels to reach my goal weight in the allotted time. Almost bang-on the 900g max weekly loss allowed by SP. So if i keep this up I'll make the goal weight just ahead of time.

I'm still not experiencing any negative side effects of exercising. At this point the last 2 times I tried SP I was sore and experiencing knee and ... Mon, 5 Mar 2012 05:13:21 EST Looking forward to weigh-in! Well, I'm 2 days out from my weekly weigh in and I think I might be somewhere in the 95's. Fingers crossed.

It's been a bloody busy week and next week will be worse as I'm going to Aussie on the 12th for 14 days and I have SO MUCH WORK to get through before I leave.

Urgh. Well as long as I manage to squeeze my treadmill time in somewhere I'll be happy.

Right, back to the grindstone! Thu, 1 Mar 2012 15:54:22 EST Energy Up. Concentration Up. Productivity Up. Well the title says it all. I've reached that point where my body has adapted to the new life style and it is chugging alone quite nicely.

I surprised my wife the other day by preparing all 3 main meals AND doing some baking. This was during a day when I worked 10+ hours. Quite the turnaround from my usually lumpish "meh" attitude.

I'm finding that when I jump on the treadmill the high incline is not so much of an effort. I had it maxed out last night and was walking... Wed, 29 Feb 2012 19:44:54 EST Back again and pacing myself Well I've had a crack at losing weight twice on SP and both times I've gone too "hardcoare" for my knackered body to handle. Both times I've ended up suffering back pain or knee damage to a degree where I'm on pain meds and near useless. Frustrating.

Of course since my last attempts all my weight has come back. I've been on SP for a few weeks this time I've been taking it easy. I've managed to drop the first 3 kilos without too much effort and no discomfort. If I get a twinge ... Tue, 21 Feb 2012 16:30:53 EST Back and not broken... Well it has been a few weeks since I was on SP. I was finding in early September that it was getting more and more difficult to start a day without some sort of back pain. And then I would spend the whole day teetering on the edge of suffering some sort of crippling back spasm.

I put it down to my body not being use to its new shape. It happens when you put on weight so I'm guessing the same could apply in the reverse situation. Muscles used to compensating to carry a load are ... Mon, 31 Oct 2011 20:49:21 EST Another messed up weekend... Why is it as soon as i get into a healthy diet and exercise routine my social life goes through the roof? This weekend there was celebrations, meals out and booze. Not that I got sloshed by there are a lot of cals in cocktails and I wasn't going to spend the night sipping from my water bottles.

So that's 4 weekends in the last 6 weeks. Hopefully my social calendar will go back to that of a hermits and I can stop worrying about blowing my SP goals all to hell.

I've log... Sun, 11 Sep 2011 16:51:38 EST The RAMBO workout - kind of... I've been a bit miffed lately that my knee or back, (or both), keep me from getting on the treadmill or stop my working out. It's very much a roll-of-the-die situation as there are so many factors involved it's impossible to predict when either or both will play up. It's both frustrating and disappointing.

When they do stop me working out I see my cardio points not going anywhere which it the most annoying of all. Lately I've been thinking of other exercise that I do during the ... Thu, 8 Sep 2011 17:35:56 EST *Yawn*... And "yay" for skinny jeans! Gee... It's really hard to type when you keep yawning and your eyes water up. It appears my sleeping patterns are still messed up. Might have to get a someone to bonk me on the head with a mallet each night - hey, it works in the cartoons :)

Maybe it was all the fun Airsoft gaming last night till 9pm that got my brain excited and awake. Too bad my knee wasn't as excited. I had to sit out a few rounds and when I did play I mostly walked rather than upsetting it more. Ho hum. ... Wed, 7 Sep 2011 17:29:38 EST Still trucking along... fingers crossed Well, another day with no back pain. I couldn't jog on the tread (i got a warning twinge) so I stuck with the walking like yesterday and went longer and burnt more than I need too so that's OK.

A good food day today also. Lots of water too. I feel much better than I did in the weekend. It's amazing how getting back on track for a day and a half can make all the difference... :) Tue, 6 Sep 2011 03:12:36 EST A mad few days Well, I've spent the last 3 days setting up and running an short comping even for your airsoft clubs 3rd birthday. I'm just pretending the last 3 days didn't happen.
I can't recall all of the foods I ate tho I didn't go overboard at any of the meals. I expect there was a few hundred extra cals consumed due to alcohol and the odd party snack but nothing to get too excited about.
My back seems reasonable today so I'm hoping I have a week of treadmill success to get back on track. ... Sun, 4 Sep 2011 19:50:04 EST Dinner out - Stayed in the limits Another dinner out this week. It was a work do and there was an array of foods on the table. By my best guess I've managed to not go over my limits. Which is great 'cos with my back playing up again my treadmill times this week have been almost non existent. :(
I'll try a walk tonight (if I have time) but I don't have much hope with the pains I've been having and the fact that I'm already walking around like a question mark... ho hum. Wed, 31 Aug 2011 23:08:38 EST Cute Dragon = Working EXTRA hard this week...

Well yesterday was a write-off. I plonked myself in front of the computer to work and the next thing I know it's 6.30pm and I have to rush out the door for a dinner with friends. I didn't even take a break all day to update my SP stuff.

Luckily, armed with my SP knowledge, I managed to "eat blind" all day and still meet all my SP nutritional requirements while staying within my daily limits. So I'm pre... Mon, 29 Aug 2011 19:36:00 EST First month down... and the scale says Well it's the end of my first full Spark month and I've down an even 5kg. (Possibly more what with the codeine screwing up certain bodily functions!) Another 3 months at this rate and I'll be my goal weight. But I'm guessing this is all "easy" weight to lose. I bet the closer I get to 90kg the harder I'll have to work.

My back is getting better. I managed some time running on the tready last night rather than just walking. I certainly ups the cals and downs the minutes. Alth... Fri, 26 Aug 2011 23:56:31 EST Spare tyre deflating... Well I jumped on the scales for a pre-weigh day sneak peek and it looks like I might have dropped another kg or more this week. The guy in the bathroom mirror is definitely not spreading as wide as he was a month ago. Another couple of months of this and I won't recognize myself :)
Just have to wait for the old back to improve so I can get back into my strength training! Thu, 25 Aug 2011 22:12:43 EST Argh! No internet! Talk about cutting it fine. I went over my cap for the month sometime last night when the telco did their figures. So no internet this morning. Luckily it rolls over today so it's back on. hehehe.

Anyhoo. Since I run an internet business from home that meant no work for most of today. So I got to spend some time catching up on other chores for a club I run which was nice.

Also had plenty of time to get my first 30mins on the tready (still walking) and I'll be able... Wed, 24 Aug 2011 23:24:36 EST Walking away the pain... Well as I'd hoped yesterday I managed to get in a little treadmill time even with my back playing up. A handful of drugs can do wonders. :)
Well my legs are working fine so I don't see any reason not to walk on the tready. No running tho - that bouncing would have crippled me. Only managed 30 mins yesterday but I'm hoping for 60 today. I have a relatively free night so nothing to interrupt my walking plans.
Walking actually helps with the discomfort which is at it's worse whe... Tue, 23 Aug 2011 21:00:42 EST Bent like a Pretzel... Alas! My head start on my weeks exercise has backfired. I played a sport on my rest day yesterday happy in the knowledge that I'd be spending some extra cals. But today I'm a human pretzel. Stupid back.
Drugs aren't helping somewhere between "not much" and "not at all". So I've lost all ability to exercise today which would have amassed more spent cals than yesterdays efforts!
Will be spending the night in a different bed and will be employing all the stretching tricks I can ... Mon, 22 Aug 2011 05:48:28 EST Guilt and his friends... Well after the late night (2am) and the sore back and the complaining knee I was hard pressed to get on the treadmill today.

You know how it is. You can't think of any good reason to put up with discomfort for such a tedious and mind numbing a procedure as plodding on a treadmill. Banging your head on the wall would seem far more interesting, what with all the funny coloured spots you start to see after a while :)

Much better if I just lay on the couch and tell my... Sat, 20 Aug 2011 07:37:58 EST Playing bartender... Had and interesting day yesterday. Only managed 1/3 of the workout time I wanted to squeeze in. The rest of the time was spent setting up the house to host my wifes work mates for a cocktail evening.

The evening was great. It was only a small affair but we had friends set up to play for the entertainment. They arrived with their full stage performance rig and for a few hours our lounge was a nightclub dance floor.

Maggi (flatmate) and I played bartender and kitchen s... Fri, 19 Aug 2011 23:52:38 EST New batteries in the scales - what will they say?? So my scales ran out of juice the other day. (They are these flash electronic things that estimate body fat, metabolic age etc). So I haven't been able to weigh myself this week.

Until this morning......

I popped in the new batteries and thought about the food and exercise this week and honestly did not know what to expect. It SHOULD go down.... should... maybe... well there was that aoli...

I gingerly step on. The digital read-out wavers as I adjust my s... Wed, 17 Aug 2011 18:04:05 EST Making time again... better organised! So the whole "time management" thing bit me in the ass again the last couple of days. If I don't get a head start on the exercise in the morning then I struggle to get enough in during the day.

Of course I do have to do work too. I can't very well tell a client "sorry, I haven't finished that site upload cos I had to get my rolly-polly belly on the treadmill". So although I only squeezed in a little tready run yesterday I don't feel too bad considering the 12+ hours I was chaine... Tue, 16 Aug 2011 17:20:34 EST Another busy day tied to the computer... Well i didn't get a chance to do my morning exercise. Had to get a bunch of website work finished today. So now i am looking at my workload (it's nearly 5pm and I have several hours work to do) and the hour and a half exercise I have to fit in... I need a time machine. :( Tue, 16 Aug 2011 00:53:16 EST Glad to be back to the routine... Well this weekend was a clear lesson in how not to be prepared. I run a fun 6km event on Saturday and the time away from the house ended up being longer than expected. I'd eaten well for breakfast but while away the only things to eat were less than ideal.

Although I didn't go overboard it became quickly apparent how easily overloading on cals could happen when there are pringles, chocolate and sports drinks in the car. I was shocked when I got home and started to tally my nut... Sun, 14 Aug 2011 17:32:32 EST 6km "Run" and rest day Well the 6km mud "run" was more of a walk yesterday. Mainly due to the amount of people trying to go through the narrow course. It was very stop-start with bottle necking making us wait for several minutes at certain obstacles.

But we were doing if for the fun of it not to be competitive. It was certainly easier to get around the course last year as we did the 12 course which has fewer competitors and no hold ups. I think it will be back to the 12km course again next year.
... Sun, 14 Aug 2011 03:14:04 EST Looking good for the next weigh in I'm having a rest day today in light of the 6km mud run tomorrow. I jumped on the scales as was pleased to see another 600g or so missing so that bodes well for the weekend weigh in.

I'm looking forward to the run tomorrow. My knee is getting used to running and the exercise is definitely helping to strengthen and stabilize it.

Off to worn no to find something silly to wear in the mud. Maybe a tutu :) Thu, 11 Aug 2011 17:49:09 EST
