SMURFI's SparkPeople Blog SMURFI's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Energy issues... I'm hoping my energy level picks up. I'm tired of feeling so tired!!! Something needs to change. I need to get to the root of it...add some yoga...something....ugh! Sat, 2 May 2009 01:24:31 EST Keeping crappy food out of the house As the title says, I've been keeping crappy food out of the house so it's just not there to munch mindlessly on. I also have eaten at restaurants a couple of times this weekend and I had a seafood taco and fresh fruit for one meal, and a grilled chicken sandwich with a side salad at another meal. We've also been working on home organization. We got some new bookshelves and put together another shelving system as well. It all ties together...body clutter can be related to clutter in genera... Sun, 5 Apr 2009 02:06:23 EST ouch! Thursday I hurt my ankle/foot falling at the dance studio, and nope, not while dancing but by misplacing my foot in the parking lot! Clutz-o-rama! It's frustrating, too, because I don't need any more reasons not to exercise! I'm still walking on it but babying it some. I never do well with the "stay off your foot" thing. I'm hoping to not have to miss dance class on Monday.
24 Sun, 22 Mar 2009 00:23:30 EST Portion control and dance Right now, I've been keeping in touch with my portion control. I've also cut down on diet soda, and increased tea even more. I generally have had healthy eating habits for the most part for many years, since being diagnosed with hypoglycemia and managing my food to keep my blood sugar in check, anyhow. I've just been watching for things I can fine tune right now. I'm also trying to get a better handle on my time. Time to set aside for exercise is difficult. Monday's dance class is my on... Sat, 7 Mar 2009 20:30:09 EST Eeeeek! Incentive! For the dance recital I will have to wear this (in purple)! At least I have 7 months to work on it!
Sat, 21 Feb 2009 10:51:48 EST Dancin' Fool! As I said I would, I did go to the dance class for a trial class. I almost flaked because I wasn't feeling well but I sucked it up and went. We did tons of stretching and did ab exercises and pushups before doing basic jazz dance drills and are learning a routine. Even though I was rusty and seem to be the second oldest there, I loved it, and am going to challenge myself to make it work! Monday I'm going back and signing up to be in it regularly. Darling daughter will also be starting he... Fri, 30 Jan 2009 01:51:14 EST Going for it! Monday I'm trying out a jazz dance class at a studio I also found a dance class for my daughter at. I'm trying the class as a "drop in" guest for one day first to see how it goes, (or see if I can hang lol). I hope it works out, it's been so long since I did jazz, but I always liked it. Fri, 23 Jan 2009 00:13:24 EST Dance class, good eating, etc I did some leg work in searching for a new dance class to keep me going, as well as a yoga class. I''m hoping I can find a dance studio that will be perfect for both my daughter and myself. I miss dance alot, it always kept me feeling good, both physically and creatively as well.

Sunday's food was in decent balance:

breakfast: egg sandwich, tea

morning snack: almonds

lunch: grilled tilipia, potato, steamed veggies, garlic toast, tea

... Mon, 19 Jan 2009 10:42:59 EST Oh man!!!! I'm so lame!! Okay, I need to get back to Spark and healthy habits! That's it! Gonna find a new dance class to try and yoga, too! I have been doing the "My Weight Loss Coach" on my Nintendo DS since the new year, which does give me some good mini-motivations and keeps track of progress and pedometer mileage. At least that's something, but I need to do more! Sat, 17 Jan 2009 14:53:39 EST on track this week! This week I've gotten my cardio in 3 times already and plan to do it tomorrow as well. I'm trying to stick to at least 4 times a week, or more if it works out. I feel better already and have been more aware of food intake and portions. I also got through my monthly ick without destroying myself with pms cravings. I can do this! Sat, 15 Nov 2008 01:23:30 EST Walking club We got our after school walking club started up again on Friday. It's hard to work around prep and meetings but exercise is so important that we're each going to commit to doing at least 3 days, to work around everyone's different schedules we just have someone going each day so that no one goes alone. (Safety is important too!) 3 of us went on Friday and we had a very fast pace. We're trying to encourage everyone and get them involved! Sat, 8 Nov 2008 11:51:48 EST This insane heat isn't helping! Ugh @ the heat....around 100 most days . We haven't been able to get our walking group back together at school yet. I'm mainly trying to stay hydrated and avoid salty junk. We bought a good amount of fruit and some other healthy items from Trader Joes. I feel a little better about my nutrition but the heat is making me feel exhausted. I need to work on getting more sleep. Thu, 9 Oct 2008 01:17:51 EST Long time, no Spark! I guess I can honestly say my Spark fizzled for awhile. Between school starting up again and hubby being gone overseas for a business trip for most of September, I just felt overwhelmed and exhausted starting my new teaching year and being mommy and all. I need to get back in gear and blogging this is my first step! With hubby home I have no "excuse" not to take care of me and keep my spark lit. Not that hom being gone should have sabatoged me....but it did and I can't turn back time, jus... Sun, 28 Sep 2008 21:24:23 EST veins circulating again! It feels good to be moving again! I need to remember this if I get in a slump again!! This morning I took dd out in the stroller for a morning power walk. I was trying to beat the heat by getting out as early as possible. It was already getting warm, and by the end of the walk was ugh too hot, but I had gotten a good, brisk-paced 30 minutes, mostly uphill in, so I am so glad I went! Mon, 11 Aug 2008 17:01:22 EST A good day, and thanks!! Thanks girls for the slump support! Today I ate great and I started with yoga and meditation, which cleared that cloud out of my head. I also did a dance workout today. I feel much better and it reminded me how much I like and need yoga. Wed, 6 Aug 2008 22:44:28 EST Getting out of slumps....not easy!!! Ugh! I feel so much in a fitness slump. All my houseguests have left, and I am moving on....but slowly it seems! I have been nice and light today with food. I had my high fiber, low sugar cereal for breakfast, fruit for a snack, and sushi and sugar snap peas for lunch. Next, is to make sure I get a workout in today. The weather is humid and makes me feel ick but mind over matter, that's what A/C is for. Tue, 5 Aug 2008 16:13:15 EST busy busy busy! It's been hectic here, with family visiting for the next week and a half. My exercise has been sporadic because my schedule for everything is off! So I'm just trying to keep busy and active in general, and watching what or how much I'm eating. It's always harder for me though being off routine, routine is comfortable to me! I happen to be wearing the shirt from my last blog today. Since it's a reward, it's a good reminder for me today to stay on a decent track. Anyone one else have trou... Wed, 23 Jul 2008 16:59:45 EST Little fashion reward For a little fashion reward for my fitness workouts and getting some tone, losing inches in my arms, I got myself this little reward of a shirt. I like clothes as rewards because they're not unhealthy, and they're fun! Of course it was also on sale, good sale going on at Saks.
So far, I've also exercised all week; it's already Friday, and I feel great! 104 Fri, 11 Jul 2008 16:45:46 EST Good news! 104 I hadn't measured myself in awhile, but noticed looser sleeves so I measured my arms, and wow! I lost an inch and a quarter in each of them! Hurray for toning! And I've had co-workers say after age 30 the arms just go and you can't fix them. Silly people! I know the arm work in bellydancing has helped as well as my workout dvds. Feels good, since the scale won't move, at least I got something concrete from the measuring tape! Sun, 6 Jul 2008 20:49:08 EST Shred it! I just did Jillian Michaels 30-Day Shred dvd. I like it. It's efficient and breaks a good sweat. I'm gonna shred some extra mush off this July!!!! Last night we went out to Trader Joes to stock up on good, healthy food, and I also stocked up on fresh produce at the supermarket. I'm ready to shred a few, that's for sure, this plateau has got to go! Tue, 1 Jul 2008 17:33:55 EST Dancin' it off I won't let the plateau get me down! I had a great cardio dance session today! It felt good to dance all the sluggishness and potty training stress off! Actually, I think the little one has started off well with that, but it's hard work! Anyway....nothing like dancing to burn those calories and put me in a great mood! I recommend dancing for exercise anytime! Burn baby burn! Thu, 26 Jun 2008 18:38:18 EST Plateau for weeks! Plateaus suck! I've been stuck for weeks! I need to regroup and figure out what I'm doing or not doing. Now that schools out I can pay better attention to my body. It's been so hot that my appetite feels shot the last few days. All I want is cold food. I got the yummiest cherries at Costco! I'm going to try and do dance cardio daily for awhile. Mon, 23 Jun 2008 10:07:20 EST Schooooooools out for summer! Finally! I'm free for awhile! I will do my best to make the most of it and enjoy every minute because it always goes by so fast!!! Today I am going to have a lazy, don't get dressed day, at least for the early part of the day. My body is so worn out. Wednesday was the last day of school, but yesterday I went in to pack and move everything to my car or new classroom. Since I am teaching a totally different grade (yay!) I had alot to go through and pack to keep or give away. I was so tir... Fri, 20 Jun 2008 08:44:45 EST ALMOST done!! I'm ALMOST out of school for summer. Our last day is Wednesday. I am ready to be done, psychologically and even physically tired! But I still have things to do to wrap up the year, pack up the classroom, move classrooms for my new grade, finish paperwork, updating files, etc. Tear down/clean up....I am looking forward to some down time and definitely lots of daughter time! I'll also have more time to meal plan/prep. I always do best nutritionally in the summer. I'll be a more active Sp... Sun, 15 Jun 2008 23:33:14 EST When times get hectic.....ugh! When life gets hectic, I definitely need a better plan. It seems when there's extra things to do, or stress, I get wiped out and exercise falls by the wayside. I don't want that to happen. I wish I had better time management or something. When I don't exercise much in the week, I feel even worse/less energetic so its not productive at all! Last week I did get one dancing with daughter session in and only one walk. NOT ENOUGH!!! The end of the teaching year is so busy for me, it's drivi... Sun, 1 Jun 2008 22:33:46 EST Shopping! I had an excellent shopping night at the Nordstroms Half-Yearly sale on Wednesday! I tried on so much stuff! Unfortunately for my wallet, I liked way too much of it. I cut it down, but still bought quite a few things. I love the stuff I got! I'll have to take some new pictures! I'm overdue to update my pics on the page anyways. If anyone has a Nordstroms nearby, this sale is awesome! So much great stuff marked way down! Online they usually have good sale stuff too.
www.nord... Fri, 23 May 2008 20:43:33 EST Wacky weather! It's amazing the variety of weather one week can have! On Sunday and Monday, it was 100 degrees out and sunny. Tuesday, crazy gusts of wind came. Wednesday was mild. Thursday seemed mild, and I dressed accordingly.....but when I walked out of my meeting at about 2:15, buckets of hard rain were falling, and then there were 3 different blasts of hail in the next few hours. Big marble sized hail! While driving home in this craziness, a big sheet of lightning struck behind me, close enough ... Fri, 23 May 2008 20:34:27 EST 4 Below One cool thing is that not only am I below my pre-preg weight, but I am 4 lbs below my wedding weight! Wooo hoooo, party! 107 Wed, 14 May 2008 21:15:04 EST Farmer's Market Gotta love Farmers' Markets! I got tons of strawberries, awesome apples, asian pairs, and nuts. All were local and organically grown, and cheaper than in stores. We've been doing that weekly now. Plus, it gives us some walking. Last time, there was also a lady selling handmade soaps. I stopped to look at and smell them, but didn't get any this time. None of them smelled quite as good as the LUSH ones. I may have to treat myself to some kettle corn next time we're there though! It sm... Sat, 3 May 2008 13:35:23 EST Time flies!! Time sure flies!! Before you know it, you're mommy to a 2-year-old! Today we had darling daughter's birthday party. I wouldn't call it a big healthy eating day, but I only had one piece of pizza and steered clear of the chips. The cupcake was yummy though, and so was the other cupcake, later! Well, your daughter only turns 2 once!! She had a great time at her Backyardigans party decorating cupcakes and playing with her friends. Now, she's having a deep-sleep nap! Sat, 26 Apr 2008 20:43:51 EST Godiva chocolate! Thank Goddess (Godiva IS a Goddess name) for Godiva chocolate! I have this big bar, and it saved me from the evil pms cravings this week! I ate one itty-bitty square a day but the flavor was so intense and I savored it. I was totally satisfied and able to avoid any choco-binges. I had also read that taking extra calcium helps, and I tried that, too. I think it helped me some, also, with pain, etc. Now, to enjoy the weekend being done with this, and then start a fresh new week!
<... Sat, 19 Apr 2008 16:40:31 EST Stocked up! We went out to stock up on all the good, fresh stuff. I always feel good after that! Got fresh tomatoes, corn, apples, pineapple, herbs, etc. And more whole wheat pasta, whole wheat little dinner rolls (they look so good!) I also have some frozen berries because the berries didn't look so good this time, with soymilk and yogurt so I can make smoothies. It just feels good to be stocked up with healthy ingredients and snacks. Sun, 13 Apr 2008 22:32:09 EST Keeping self on track....literally! We're still power walking the bike trail after school, got a couple more teachers recruited. We have the rule that we change into our walking shoes before we even walk our students to the parking lot, then we're ready to take off from there. Great way to end the work day and feel energized picking my little girl up. I'm so hungry for a snack by the time I get home! Tue, 8 Apr 2008 21:49:09 EST staying on track......swimsuits.... I've already got 2 cardios in this week, Monday, and Wednesday so far. I plan to keep the momentum going and get and keep the 4 a week routine. Swimsuit season is almost here....hehe.....I got a catalog in the mail today I'd never seen before and it has great looking swimsuits and althletic wear.
The pic above is the bottom of a swimsuit I like. The top is :

ailmain.jsp?itemID=4259&itemType=PRODU
C... Thu, 3 Apr 2008 00:14:33 EST Mini dress, mini splurge I let myself have this Juicy mini dress as a reward for progress that I've made. It was a bit of a splurge, but I'll say mini splurge since I did get it on sale, for more than half off of the original price! I can't wait to wear it, seems so soft and breezy, and the weather's been so hot! I ordered it online so I'll have to wait a few days though!

I am a believer in rewards and think we should all reward ourselves! Show yourself some love today! Plus it helps the economy...h... Sun, 23 Mar 2008 18:15:12 EST Spring Break! Yay! Time for Spring Break! I need the breather and if the weather stays this good, gonna head down to the beach! I also like to try new recipes when I have this extra down time, add new healthy entrees to our rotation of favorites. Darling Daughter is a great eater so that helps too. She loves fresh food....strawberries, tomatoes, etc. Hubby's gonna take a couple days off too, double the fun! Sat, 22 Mar 2008 10:57:14 EST New pants Went out and bought 5 new pairs of pants today! It's a good thing because all my pants were slipping down, and even my little students said to go get new pants....hehe....because I was tugging up at my waist. Another size down is always nice! Makes me miss some "bad" habits even less! I did look for bargains though since I was buying so many, but I found cute pants for great prices! I'll donate the bigger pants right out so I don't have excuses to gain back! Sat, 15 Mar 2008 20:17:57 EST Got my hubby back!! I'm so glad to have my hubby back from his business trip! It was 3 weeks long, ugh! It wreaked havoc on my ability to exercise, as it was 24/7 kid duty, but I kept my eating in check and had a lil weight loss, rather than gain. Probably partly from stress/exhaustion! But I'll take my hubby being home anytime over that! Now we can get our routines back to normal! Plus, he's the best! Sun, 9 Mar 2008 23:49:34 EST 3 More pounds gone!! Wow! I am surprised that the scale keeps going down for me! Generally I am at a plataeu FOREVER most of the time, but it seems that when it rains, it pours! I am noticing a big difference in my clothes and I definitely need new pants!!! Been pulling my pants up all day! Craziness, but a good thing. Maybe after almost 2 years the pregnancy hormones said, "ok, we can leave now" hehe. Tue, 26 Feb 2008 22:29:50 EST teaching healthy habits to little ones For my first and second grade class, for Valentines Day, we studied Healthy Hearts all week, like a detailed nutrition unit and also exercise. Today on Valentines Day we had for our food (instead of all the junk the other classes were eating) a "Healthy Start, Healthy Heart Breakfast" first thing in the morning. They were so excited, too. We had whole grain waffles with strawberries and vanilla yogurt, bananas, and milk. They loved it. Afterwards wel also talked about how we felt. They ... Thu, 14 Feb 2008 23:21:28 EST Another one down!! Yay! Shook off another pound! Hurray! Generally, my scale doesn't do much....I have very long plateaus, so I'm excited! Hubby and I had both been plateauing a few months back, so around the new year we bucckled down a bit more with the eating, mainly planning ahead more to avoid going out to eat much. It's paying off for both of us, as hubby has lost some pounds too. He's Kietstrom here on Spark if anyone would like to visit him :-) Sat, 9 Feb 2008 12:28:51 EST rainy, icky days Ugh, well there's been some cold days lately, and drab, gray skies, and rain. Not the usual Southern Cali weather. There's also been a flu/sinus/cough thing going through our household. Today, my head is pounding, yuck! We've still stuck to the eating plan very nicely, so good nutrition should help us all be well sooner, ideally. It's been hard to exercise, however, and I don't want to get sicker or anything, so I'm giving myself a break. If my head stops pounding, I may do one of my li... Sun, 3 Feb 2008 14:04:34 EST Woman Warrior! Today I did the "Woman Warrior Series 1" workout from the book, "The Show It Love Workout" by Kacy Duke. What an amazing workout! It's a strength circuit but it also got my heart beating as well! It was awesome, and I felt powerful doing it, the moves have an empowering feel to them. I think it will be a really good way for me to burn and firm! Sat, 26 Jan 2008 14:23:13 EST Today I actually LIKE the scale! The scale was nice to me today! 2 pounds of nice! Hurray! I had been working alot on the meal planning and cooking the last couple weeks, maybe just the plataeu bust I needed! It's nice timing, because I've been feeling motivated, and the scale didn't crush my spark. Sometimes it can disappoint, that's for sure! Nice to know good planning can pay off! Sun, 20 Jan 2008 13:47:10 EST Food, food, food! Yesterday I was in one of those tough situations for watching the eating! I was at a workshop, filled with quite the spread of food, all day. It came out in shifts...breakfast, mid-morning snack, and lunch (with tons of desserts offered!) It was just grab a plate and get what you want. For the breakfast I had a variety of fresh fruit and a hard boiled egg. At snack time I just had a handful of granola and trail mix. For lunch I went for the chicken ceasar salad. I went to the dessert t... Sat, 19 Jan 2008 14:04:26 EST Body Bar I am excited, I finally found a weighted "body bar" to exercise with, I've been looking at several places. It's really nice! I find it more fun than dumbells. I'd always wanted to try the body bar exercises that pop up in Shape magazine, etc, and there's also exercises in my new book, "The Show it Love Workout," so I had been looking, and the only place that had them around here, was Sports Chalet. So far I really enjoy it! Fri, 18 Jan 2008 09:01:56 EST 3 Days Well....I got three workouts in this week, which is better than none! I am shooting for 4-5 a week though! But I'm not going to beat myself up about it, because there are weeks I've had fewer! Today's dance workout was some cardio hip-hop style, and very good n' sweaty! I'm doing well nutritionally lately, so that's a good thing too! Sat, 12 Jan 2008 20:01:09 EST Goals for 2008 Happy New Year everyone! What are you working on this year? Here are the 2008 Goals I am working on:

1. Organize meal planning by shopping for all I need for home made, healthy meals on the weekend, using the cookbooks, and having everything on hand so there's no excuses for the quick-fix stuff (which is usually crap!)
2. Try new flavors in food.
3. Exercise at least 5 days a week, but be active daily.
4. Grow in bellydance to achieve new levels and styles, to w... Tue, 1 Jan 2008 14:42:43 EST Busy, busy, busy! I've been really busy with holiday shopping and with stuff for school. The students are getting ready for their holiday performance on Thursday and I'm also working on their report cards. We're working on our holiday stuff for home, and yesterday we got the tree up. The lil one is quite excited about the tree! Yesterday I went to a craft fair and found a few gifts and bought some really delicious salsa from a local couple who have their own business making it. I love salsa and this is lo... Sun, 9 Dec 2007 10:42:24 EST Didn't pig out I stuck to normal portions for Thanksgiving dinner. It was nice not feeling all full and icky. There also were 3 different types of pie. So everyone was like ok I have to try one of each! Not me! I just had one piece of pumpkin pie. I don't know what the deal is in this culture that we think we have to have everything. Sat, 24 Nov 2007 10:11:16 EST
