SMILEYBABS's SparkPeople Blog SMILEYBABS's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Wishing to get my motivation back for Christmas So much has gone on since my last blog. My mother died in late July after a relatively short (7 month) history of lung cancer. I've been back to NY three times, June, July and August. I spent time before, during and after my mother died. My daughter's senior year in high school began in August soon after we returned from the funeral. Emily has been in the midst of a busy senior year with all the college applications and such. So much stress! So much inappropriate eating! So little exercise! ... Fri, 2 Dec 2011 00:58:59 EST Happily back on track I missed writing my three-month progress report because I haven't made any progress in the first quarter of 2011. I have done a great job of staying about the same (up and down the same few pounds) but not any additional weight loss. Now it is well into April and I figured I had to find a way to reconnect with my progress. As it turns out, a simple task was the key.

My Weight Watcher leader, Donna, restarted the concept of the "group log" using a three-month tracker. I decided to ... Thu, 21 Apr 2011 18:52:14 EST Mirror, mirror on the wall Lately I have been experiencing a situation that has often shaken my resolve in the past...going clothes shopping and looking at myself in the dressing room mirror! I have been noticing how my gut is slimmer and my butt more trim. My measurements show I have even lost size in my neck! I was just tracking that for the heck of it and it was the same for almost a year and all of the sudden it has was smaller...I remeasured three times to make sure I was being accurate! Getting back to the mirro... Wed, 26 Jan 2011 23:33:48 EST 2010 Progress Report When I restarted my efforts last January, I planned to reach my goal weight by December 30,2010. Today was my last official Weight Watchers weigh-in for the year so here is what I achieved: lost 31.6 of the 44 pounds I intended to lose for a 72% achievement of my weight loss goal. I attended my meetings 50/52 weeks (96%) and am always an active participant. I exceeded my goal of 12,000 minutes of exercise (>100%), mostly walking. My husband and I have cooked most of our meals at home which w... Wed, 29 Dec 2010 23:22:24 EST How I did over the summer I don't blog very often. Trying to keep it to once per quarter to assess my progress. This summer wasn't a good one for weight loss or exercise. It gets too hot in Texas to do our usual outdoor walking so most of the summer was just normal daily activities. I just about forgot that in early summer I helped deconstruct an old wooden fence and helped build a new one. Seems so long ago now! Eating plan went along pretty well so that was a good constant.

What I have learned is that at... Fri, 1 Oct 2010 11:49:30 EST Quarter 2 2010 Progress Report- and I do mean progress! Here is a summary of my progress since March 2010:

My husband and I were up to walking 3-5 times a week and up to 4 miles at a time at a local park and loving it! Two things occurred which changed our level of activity at the end of May: the school year ended and we no longer had to take our daughter to school each day at 6:30 am and it began to get really hot here. Once that happened, we began an outdoor home project of replacing one of our yard fences. It was a big task and I was... Wed, 7 Jul 2010 22:04:24 EST Quarterly Progress Report My husband and I have been Sparking since January and we have both made significant progress. We are walking 3+ miles up to 5 times a week and working out in our yard most days when the weather is nice. Weather has been pretty beautiful and if you know anything about Texas Gulf Coast weather, we are enjoying it before the heat and humidity reach stifling degrees. We have never exercised in the warm/hot weather so that will take some adjusting, since January we have walked in some weather tha... Fri, 2 Apr 2010 22:19:00 EST A Red-Letter Day I have been a pretty sedentary person for most of my adult life but in retirement, I've taken on activity as my main event of the day. Today I walked over 3 miles, did yardwork for 70 minutes (pulling weeds, clipping trees and bundling branches), did 20 minutes of leaf raking and later did upper body weight work out with 8 lb weights. This is the most activity I have recorded in just about ever! And the funny thing is that is felt GOOD! My husband and I are hoping to keep this up in the long ... Fri, 19 Feb 2010 23:49:22 EST Celebrating Two Years on Sparkpeople Today is the second anniversary of my joining SparkPeople. I want to thank BallerinaHippo for turning me on to the site at that year's student Super Bowl party. While I haven't been a faithful sparker, I have had my moments. For the past month, though, I've been sparking like there is no tomorrow! I even did over 1000 fitness minutes for January... truly unheard of in my entire life! I credit my plodding along at my Weight Watchers' meeting and a good swift kick to exercise provided by my dea... Wed, 3 Feb 2010 23:19:32 EST Weight Watchers + SparkPeople + Retirement = Success My husband and I have been retired for one month together and we have begun our retirement fitness plan. I have waited to write a blog until we have had some level of consistency and success.
Now I feel I can share that two people on a mission make it much more successful. In my adult life I could never really be categorized as an "exerciser", in fact, I am very much at home in a sedentary lifestyle. In retirement, I have nothing else I must do every day other than take care of myself.... Fri, 29 Jan 2010 14:24:03 EST Recovering from Ike in Galveston Today I am starting back on my plan. This is an incredibly big step for me right now. My life has been disrupted by Hurricane Ike. We evacuated, returned, and cleaned up at home over the first couple of weeks. All seems deceptively back to normal at home as it is many miles inland from the coast and from Galveston. However my place of employment has been badly damaged and after six weeks only partly come to life. Teaching resumed a couple of week ago at an alternative site, several miles a... Mon, 3 Nov 2008 14:27:23 EST Long time, no blog I can't believe it has been so long since I made a blog entry! April was such a long time ago. The month of May came along and there were several end-of-school-year activities. I also pinched a nerve in my neck which has been a concern which continues today, although at a reduced intensity. Next, a trip to a national convention at the end of May-beginning of June. Then the push to get ready for dance recital followed coupled with a few weeks of more than normal work hours. All of the sudden i... Wed, 16 Jul 2008 23:28:44 EST Reaching a new trophy level- 2,500 SparkPoints I have been a member of SparkPeople for about three months and today earned my 2,500 point trophy. I know that means I have done my share of exploring the SparkPeople website, logging my nutrition and actually exercising. SparkPeople is working just as I imagined. I am a good data keeper and it plays right into that need. I just love all the graphs and lists of nutrition numbers to ponder my next move toward better health. I am celebrating this trophy since realize the next one is another 2,5... Wed, 30 Apr 2008 23:25:28 EST Reflections on rewards I have been thinking about how far I have come since August 2007 and I am quite happy with where I am right now. I've learned some things along the way. One is how to reward myself better. I like objects as my rewards because they remind me of my progress whenever I see or use them. Case in point- my 20 lb reward was to fix my engagement ring as the diamond had fallen out of its setting a year or so ago. I earned that reward months ago but hadn't acted on it...until this week. Now I have a be... Sun, 27 Apr 2008 12:27:42 EST Wednesday Weigh-in Day Down another pound this week! YAY!
It was a challenge this past week as DD had a dance competition on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and our meal schedule and contents was a bit off. I managed to eat well at a Mexican restaurant- grilled snapper, a little side salad with a dollop of guacamole and no chips. It wasn't that hard. If you don't eat the first chip, you can do it. It is harder to stop once you start. Funny thing is that if you don't eat the chips, you don't leave a Mexican restau... Wed, 23 Apr 2008 08:33:33 EST SparkPeople T-shirt has arrived! I thought I would reward myself with a SparkPeople T-shirt a few rewards ago but they were in limited supply when I checked. This went on for weeks in a row and finally this week it was announced that the T-shirt supply had been replenished. Mine has already arrived and I am wearing it as I type my blog. It is a beautiful kelly green and in a size that shows I've lost weight. I can no longer just assume I wear a large.
41 252 Thu, 17 Apr 2008 19:58:03 EST Tweaking my goal weight After a discussion with my WW leader yesterday, I've decided to officially change my goal weight to 150. She stated that it is the top of the range for my height and that I could still lose more after that but meet my WW goal a bit sooner. I like the sound of that since I have been going and paying on and off for the past 5 or 6 years at least! Actually when I looked at my fitness reports, that puts me right on target for getting there by the end of August 2008, my one year anniversary of get... Thu, 17 Apr 2008 17:01:51 EST Weigh-in day wonderful news Today I hit 35 pounds total and 10 pounds since joining SparkPeople in February! Today is also my dancing daughter's 14th Birthday so "Happy Birthday, Emily!" Wed, 16 Apr 2008 08:43:01 EST Wearing a belt with my pants today Some might not think that wearing a belt is such a big accomplishment. For someone (me) with a larger than life belly to get down to a size where a leather belt can be comfortably worn is a major goal that I have looked forward to since I began this latest journey last August. I'm looking ahead to more belt wearing as well as an even more reduced-sized belly! Tue, 15 Apr 2008 17:54:34 EST Big Dance Weekend Lots of dance competition this weekend. Hard to stay on your plan with a weird schedule. We are bringing our lunches and hoping to have time for a second meal at Chili's, Wendy's or Subway. Competition numbers on both Saturday and Sunday with a reasonable schedule. I can't believe next weekend's competition has my daughter competing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. That will require alot more planning!
Fri, 11 Apr 2008 23:10:57 EST Yet another "first" Yesterday I still can't believe I ran! I haven't run in over 20 years. I was motivating my dd for her annual school fitness test. She hadn't run a mile in over 2 years so we went for a practice run at the junior high track. She ran the mile and I ran every other lap with her for a total of 1/2 mile. While I will never love running, it is nice to know that I can still do it! Mon, 7 Apr 2008 22:13:25 EST Guess what I did today?? I tried on a bathing suit at Dillard's! I can hardly believe I did that! I haven't had a real bathing suit in many years. I didn't buy it but I was pleasantly surprised that it did not look terrible! Wed, 2 Apr 2008 19:07:40 EST Into the 160's! Wednesday is my official weigh-in day and on my cool Tanita scale, I broke into the 160's! Whoo hoo! I am sure I have not been at this weight for at least 10 years and at that time being happy at this weight. This time around, while I'm happy to be here, I'm just passing through on my way to the 140's. Wed, 2 Apr 2008 08:09:20 EST Exercise Totals for March 2008 I've dropped off putting my exercise minutes here but have been keeping track on the All Health Professionals March Exercise Challenge. Totals for March 598 minutes and 2 strength-building sessions. This qualifies me for a Bronze medal for exercise minutes for the month! Yeah, me for sticking with it! Now onto the April Challenge where I will try to do more than I did in March. Tue, 1 Apr 2008 10:52:19 EST March exercise minutes and activities
I've joined the health professionals March Challenge to make myself accountable for all my exercise so my list of activities so far is listed below. There will be lots of walking this weekend with a dance competition and convention at the Galleria. I'm going to time myself walking to and from the car since I go there several times a day during this type of event. Also I'm bringing some healthy breakfast, lunch and snack items and have already decided on eating the guiltless salmon, ste... Fri, 7 Mar 2008 12:02:15 EST Friday exercise day 5 I didn't get to exercise yesterday but today I did 30 minutes on my exercise bicycle this morning before I went to work. It helped that I didn't have to be to work until late morning! :)
So far I have exceeded my expectations for exercise although I must have been crazy when I scheduled twice as much exercise for my first week as an official exercising person! Onward to tomorrow's exercise and beyond! Fri, 29 Feb 2008 21:24:41 EST Day 4 of activity- first weigh-in on my new exercise plan I haven't done activity this morning, although I guess I should say formal activity. I've put out the recycling and the trash, done two laundries and at least 30 minutes of various "picking up the house" in advance of the maid coming this morning. I think that all counts for something!
On another note, today is my weigh-in day. I've been using a cool Tanita scale and keeping all my data on a spreadsheet since last August. It has some graphs in it that show all the right trends- everythin... Wed, 27 Feb 2008 10:25:37 EST Day 3 of activity Today I did an hour and 220 or so calories on my exercise bicycle. I did the same amount of exercise as Sunday but in 5 fewer minutes. That is a good thing! Also it equaled 4 WW activity points and I'm not even going to eat them. What progress! Onward and downward!!! Tue, 26 Feb 2008 20:06:44 EST Day 2 of more activity Today I did upper body weights (5 lbs) two sets of 12 reps. I love the feeling you get from being strong. Bring it on! :) Mon, 25 Feb 2008 23:27:57 EST Dedicating myself to exercise, starting today Today I thought I'd make an initial attempt at a blog. It comes right at an important time in my weight loss journey-the time when I am really going to dedicate myself to exercise. I have been losing weight steadily (almost 30 lbs so far) since the end of August 2007 but have done it through diet alone. I've been pretty sedentary for the past couple of years so was a little worried (really much more worried than a little due to a family history of heart disease) to begin exercising again. I...
