SMARTIEBEE's SparkPeople Blog SMARTIEBEE's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community I'm BAAAAACK! For the last 3 days, since the Seattle Half Marathon, I have been taking it easy, resting, and generally being good, and bored out of my mind! So today, cold as it was, I got on my running gear and went for a run! Just a short one, DH kept cautioning me not to try too much. (still have bruises and scrapes from my fall during the Half)

I had been feeling kind of bummed out because of what I saw as my crumby finish time, and because I hadn't run since the half. I felt like wha... Thu, 3 Dec 2009 19:05:20 EST Half Marathon Adventures and Misadventures of SmartieBee Saturday night I was so excited about my upcoming Half Marathon on Sunday that I thought I would not be able to sleep at all. Instead, I was asleep nearly as soon as my head hit the pillow! I did wake up briefly a couple of time, looked at the clock and said "Nope - not time to get up yet!" and went back to sleep. Woke up again at 4:15 and decided I might as well get up and start getting ready.

I got dressed, made coffee, and got DH up, then had my "Running Breakfast" of a prote... Mon, 30 Nov 2009 19:15:39 EST Weird Thanksgiving This Thanksgiving is going to be a little odd for us. Instead of having the whole family, including all 4 grandkids and at least 2 dogs all together, we will instead be just 4. Dear MIL is not feeling very strong this year, and so Hubby and I, along with DS will be having dinner with her at the retirement facility where she lives. Dear Daughter and her family will be having dinner with her Hubby's Grandma and will join us later for dessert. So it is going to be very quiet this year. None... Wed, 25 Nov 2009 17:38:16 EST Now I am Committed! Well, I have really done it now, I am committed for sure! Yesterday I had DH drive by our local Road Runner Sports store and I dropped off my entry for the Seattle Half Marathon on Nov. 29. So now, I am committed to running it.

So, what does that mean, exactly?

It means several things .....

That I have to start running hills in my training run. Seattle has HILLS!

That I have to seriously work on building my speed. (I know - I'm an old person -... Mon, 2 Nov 2009 15:47:31 EST Sunshine and Golden Leaves I didn't get out on my run as early as I wanted to, and that turned out to be OK, even though it meant I finished later. The sun came out, at least for awhile, and it was just Glorious with all the golden leaves on the trail!

Even though it was a really long run (for me, that is! All you "elite" runners out there will probably think it was nothing - but even ultra distance runners had to start somewhere!) So I went 11.17 miles, on a spectacular day, on a beautiful trail, and i... Sat, 31 Oct 2009 16:24:31 EST Good Long Run and Other Good Things I got up really early this morning so I would have time to get in my 10 mile run before we have to start our running around stuff. It was sort of grey and cool when I started, and not a soul on the trail! The sun came up and it was just all sparkly and bright out. A little farther on it became foggy, but it was just perfect for running!

I was just determined that I was going to make it through all 10 miles today. I pretty much had to if I was to have any chance of making the Se... Thu, 22 Oct 2009 15:08:46 EST Update Wow, thanks to all my Spark Friends for their encouragement, advice and good ideas!

I am taking it easy today, and for the next few days. When I do start running again, it will be short and easy to be sure I don't start to cramp up again. If I DO cramp, I will STOP and walk!

I have been trying to add potassium through diet. I have found lots of things that are high in potassium. Bananas, potatoes, sweet potatoes. My protein powder. Wine (both red and white) soy... Wed, 14 Oct 2009 14:16:37 EST Long Slow Run and the Agony of Defeat (Or the Agony of d' Calf!) For the last couple of weeks, I have been struggling with a calf muscle that keeps cramping up. Just when I think I have it under control, I go for a long run and it cramps up yet again.

Last week when I ran the Issaquah Rotary Run 10K, it really cramped up hard. I did finish the race, but I hobbled the last mile. (I couldn't quit - a woman I thought was in my age group kept trying to pass me. I had to speed up every time I heard her get close!) **

So for the last we... Tue, 13 Oct 2009 15:33:01 EST Alki Beach Run 5K Today my daughter and granddaughter and I ran the Alki Beach Run 5K. It was a beautiful, if chilly and windy day! It was the first 5K for Caitlin, my Granddaughter, and the first in several years for my Daughter, and certainly the first time we had run together! So a momentous day, any way you look at it!

In the past, I would never have been able to run at anywhere near the pace my daughter runs, but since she ruptured her achilles tendon, she takes it a bit easier than she used... Sun, 27 Sep 2009 17:48:47 EST Look on the Bright Side! In all the yuckiness, and sadness of having our little Smart Car broken into, and our "stuff" stolen, there is a bright spot! I had to get a new driver's license, and a new Costco card. Both of these require a photo. The new photos show only ONE CHIN! Kind of nice for a change to have just the requisite number of chins! Not a big thing - but I really don't mind looking at those new photos!!

Spark ON!

Shirley
Thu, 24 Sep 2009 22:14:20 EST Great Running Weather The weather here has been just spectacular the last few days. I fear it is coming to and end soon though. This IS the Pacific Northwest, and it is nearly the end of September after all. So I wanted to take advantage of it while it is here.

Yesterday I went out for a 5 mile run. I went early cause we had lots to do later in the day. I knew if I waited it would a) be too hot and b) I wouldn't get it done!

It was pretty chilly, but clear and beautiful. I started out ... Wed, 23 Sep 2009 14:20:04 EST NW Trek Run Wild 5K Race About a week ago I signed both me and Hubby up to run the Run Wild 5K at Northwest Trek, near Eatonville.

Since we live at least an hour away from Northwest Trek, and they were closing the gate at 7:50, we left home at 6:24 this morning. It was dark! It has been awhile since I have gotten up in the dark. I still don't like it! It was also raining, but that was ok. I took dry clothes to change into after the race.

We arrived by 7:30, and got all checked in, received ... Sat, 19 Sep 2009 19:16:21 EST Adventures (and Misadventures) in Camping Tuesday was such a great day. I felt sooo good after my long run! Then we finished loading the motorhome and when our friends arrived with their rig we headed out for Kanasket-Palmer State Park and a couple days of R&R. The plan was to just hike, and smell fresh air, and visit with our friends. And it started out pretty much just that way. We did some hiking, and introduced our friends to Geocaching. Since we had been there before, we knew where the caches were, but we loaned our GPS's ... Fri, 18 Sep 2009 00:02:39 EST Running and More Just a quick entry this morning as we are getting ready to go camping and I still have to shower!

It has been an interesting 2 weeks! I talked to a running coach in Kent the other day, and he reaffirmed that I am on track for the Seattle Half in November, and gave me some pointers to improve my running.

Since then I have felt renewed purpose in my running and am doing much better. Haven't had ITB pain in either knee since then. (Who knew just keeping your toes pointed... Tue, 15 Sep 2009 12:55:49 EST Half Marathon, the Kid, and Glow in the Dark Hubby Today turned out to be a really good day! For starters, I went to my Chiropractor, and in talking about my run yesterday (he is a runner also - runs marathons and does Ironman Triathlons. While he is not a "running coach" I respect his knowledge and opinions regarding running.) and he mentioned that I could be on track to run the Seattle Half Marathon in November. A Half has been one of my goals, I just didn't think I would be ready that soon! But now I think I might! So that feels reall... Fri, 4 Sep 2009 23:24:07 EST Running in the Rain (and Shine) and the Missing Shoes I didn't get this written yesterday - Just too many other things going on!

I decided to make this a long run if my calf would hold up and I had to get out early since this was another Drs. office day for MIL. It was raining, but just barely. After the first half mile, I didn't even notice it.

I like to watch for birds and critters when I am running - gives me something to do I guess. A little bunny gave me a start when he bounded into the bushes - I hadn't even seen... Fri, 4 Sep 2009 11:54:14 EST A Day for the Dogs, Bats in the Belfry, and the Travelling Shoes Today is a much better day for me. Partly because it is an "at home day" meaning I don't have to go to Federal Way to see Dear MIL.

Hubby decided to go on my run with me today, at least for part if it. I guess he wanted to see the "Shoes". He runs faster than I do, so I felt pushed a little, but not too badly. It seemed like every one we met had a dog with them today. By the time I finished my run I had seen about 17 people, and only about 6 of them didn't have a dog! When we... Tue, 1 Sep 2009 17:16:50 EST One of Those Weeks It has indeed been one of those weeks! I know everyone has them, but this week for me it feels like the world, or life in general, is really ganging up on me!

For starters, there is my dear MIL. She is nearly 96, and lives about 18 miles from us in a Senior Living Facility. Due to a stroke a couple years ago, and severe arthritis, she is wheel chair bound. I take care of her medications and her laundry so she won't have to go to assisted living. She is really very sharp And sh... Mon, 31 Aug 2009 13:38:49 EST Cool Running and the Travelling Shoes Ok, First off, Cool Running, in this case, does not refer to a Jamaican bobsled team!

On Saturday I decided to get my run in extra early since we had so much going on that day. It was grey and drizzly out, but I really needed to get that run in! I thought I would probably have the trail to myself, but in the first 6 minutes I saw 11 other runners! And later a couple more, including one "old guy" that I have seen on the trail before.

The light rain and drizzle actu... Mon, 31 Aug 2009 13:03:56 EST More of the Travelling Shoes What a georgeous day it is for a long run! Not a cloud in the sky! It is expected to be 85 today, so I went real early. The nice thing about going early is that you almost have the trail to yourself. On the first leg I saw one young fella on a bike. After my first turn around I saw a cross country team out running together. My goodness they were fast! At least compared to me! The slowest of the group, a couple of young women, actually stopped a couple of times to stretch, and I STILL ... Thu, 27 Aug 2009 14:23:49 EST Running in the Rain, and the Travelling Shoes When I started out today, I thought I would be running in the rain, but it had quit by then. It was still lovely and cool, though, and really nice for running. At least the trail wasn't dusty. Not so many people out today, but there were a few. Some old guys with their dogs, one young mom running with a stroller, one couple walking. And one old guy running. ( The term "Old guy" or "old gal" translates as "someone my age"!)

I actually got into the "zone" today - just running a... Tue, 25 Aug 2009 13:42:23 EST The Case of the Travelling Shoes I went for a nice long run today. My longest run ever, in fact, 6.03 miles! I plan to run a 10K race in October, so I need to get my mileage up.

It was great out there today. Pretty warm, but not as hot as it was a couple of weeks ago. At least there was a nice breeze.

I run on a trail that goes part way around a local lake, and if you go far enough the other way, down along the river. It is a well used trail, and I love watching all the people I pass and meet alo... Sat, 22 Aug 2009 16:50:42 EST "The woman on p. 194" Check out the woman in the photo in this link:
picture/articleglamour.aspx?cp-documen
tid=21301585&GT1=32001
(you will need to copy and paste.) I am sure that this link is going to show up all over SparkPeople blogs today!

This woman is beautiful, and comfortable in her own skin. She is healthy and fit and NORMAL! What a wonderful thing it is that photos like this are starting to show up in magazines, instead of the skinny,... Fri, 21 Aug 2009 19:55:16 EST Nice Long Run It wasn't as hard to talk myself into running today as it was on Saturday, though it was warmer today. I decided not to try for speed today, so I just sort of chugged along, and it was easier this time.

As I was running along I kept noticing all the young moms with jogging strollers out there. Good for them! I keep thinking - "If I had been doing this when I was their age, I'd be a lot better at it now!" Of course I got passed by one with a DOUBLE STROLELR! - she was really c... Tue, 18 Aug 2009 14:57:38 EST Frustration I guess what I mean is I am frustrated with myself. My weight had been holding really well until just the last couple of weeks. Then what with the very hot weather and all, I have not been getting my cardio exercise in, except for my running. I also hadn't been weighing myself. So when I got up this morning, feeling just yucky and fat I got on the scales to discover I have gained a whole 2 pounds! Now I really feel fat, and my clothes don't feel like they fit right! So I am just frustra... Sun, 9 Aug 2009 13:06:03 EST Worries about regaining the weight I've lost. I do still worry about regaining the weight. I have been to this place before and in the past it has always come back. But then, I never had Sparkpeople before! It has only been a few weeks since I reached my goal weight, but so far I have been staying within a pound of that weight. My plan at this point is to continue with the exercise, especially the running and strength training, and continue to eat a reasonable, healthy and balanced diet. And, importantly, to use the Sparkpeople reso... Mon, 27 Jul 2009 10:53:19 EST
