SLUNDQUIS's SparkPeople Blog SLUNDQUIS's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Divorce I know Divorce is an ugly word, but I do not mean the marital kind. I have returned recently. I lost 70 lbs here a few years ago, but life got in my way, I lost my motivation and gained 80 lbs. I still am healthy with great numbers on cholesterol, blood pressure, etc. But I still am morbidly obese. I will tell you something that has recently occurred to me. I have an unhealthy relationship with food. And with any other unhealthy relationships I need a divorce. I need to get rid of the bad hab... Tue, 20 Jan 2015 17:57:46 EST Begin Again I struggled for months with motivation to get myself started again, in the meantime I gained most of my weight back. A huge part of it is the fact my schedule is very complicated. The other part that I ran into was if this was really worth the time and effort. I did come to the conclusion I need something to keep me accountable, I won't do it on my own. I am going to work on making time 6 days a week to exercise and pre-plan my daily menu. I have never had to make a menu before. I plan ... Fri, 17 Jan 2014 23:59:56 EST Floundering I really felt is though I was floundering most of the shift last night. I do believe I got everything done and it went well. I kept having the feeling there were things I needed to be doing that I didn't know needed to be done, lol. I know this is a common feeling, it's why nurses always look hairied. I am now hoping I didn't forget anything. Another common feeling. I did enjoy my patients though. It's why I stick with it. I think I'll take a nap today. Tue, 16 Oct 2012 14:46:36 EST Work I have my first scheduled shift after only taking private care jobs for about 2 years. I'm excited and nervous all at once. I am going walking then getting ready to go. I'll terll how it went tomorrow. Mon, 15 Oct 2012 10:38:28 EST Autumn Folliage The trees here always put on there autumn colors in a burst before shedding all modesty. It usually lasts less than a week and it's over until the next year. This year it has happened so slow and the colors we are seeing are fit for a king. We went for a drive into the country and all I saw was beautiful, bright colors everywhere. It does get pretty here in the Idaho mountains, don't get me wrong, it just doesn't last long. This is the second week of seeing all this. I'm so happy, this ... Sun, 14 Oct 2012 21:31:29 EST Uneven Weight Loss It's unfortunate we don't lose weight equally all over. I have lost 8 inches from my hips and 9.5 in my waist, 4 inches in each thigh and 2.5 inches in each arm. I am estatic about these, but I have lost a mere 1 inch across my chest. My face, hands, and feet are even thinner. I'm above the sky in the fact I have lost so much, but I don't understand why I haven't lost in my chest. My clothing sizes are down 2-3 sizes, but because of so little in my chest I still must by a larger scrub to... Sat, 13 Oct 2012 23:07:50 EST My ID In the process of cleaning my house getting it ready for the winter I had to take a load to a compost station. Before we are able to dispose of stuff there we have to show proof of ID and residency. The first thing the man said when he saw my driver's license is, "this is not you." I told him it was me 65 lbs ago, he did a double take then. I had to show him the signatures match before I could drop off yard wastes. I was quite amused by all this, so it was never an issue, but what a comp... Fri, 12 Oct 2012 15:54:31 EST Great Appt Today I usually only have to see the doctor once a year and today was that day. It was about this time last year that I started losing weight, so he was very surprised. He said my vital signs have improved so much that there is significantly less stress on my cardiopulmonary system. My lungs sound much better and I no longer need an inhaled steriod, just the rescue inhaler. I have had exercise induced asthma for a very long time, I will always need albuterol. He told me to keep up the great wo... Thu, 11 Oct 2012 21:37:24 EST To the doctor tomorrow For the last several years my doctor has been telling me to get more exercise. In the past I had been thinking about it, but nothing serious. Now after I have lost 65 lbs from eating healthy and exercising I can't wait to see his face. Though my appt is in the late morning and I need fasting blood work, I'm not looking too forward to that aspect. I also cannot exercise until after the appt since I do not want to have problems with low blood sugar. I do plan on walking as soon as the appt... Wed, 10 Oct 2012 21:16:50 EST SparkTeams? Out of curiosity, how many teams is everybody on? I know you can be on more than one and it's encouraged, many are on several. I'm curious about what the average number of teams is. I'm also curious if you are on several how many do you really communicate with. Do the others get ignored? I'm on one only and have tried other teams but I really feel the most comfortable with this one team. I don't get on the pages of any other teams but this one, even if I'm a member of other teams. I do... Tue, 9 Oct 2012 16:11:20 EST Soup Season I just read something about autumn being the season for soups. This is not a first, I grew up with soups in the fall and have many favorites. I love potato soup, split pea, bean soup, lentil, chili, Cream of Broccolli. These are just the ones at the top of my head. I also love a warm sandwich with them or crackers, depending on my mood. I have to make them from scratch since it is difficult finding a canned soup without soy. I love the process, the smells, just everything. I doubt I'm ... Mon, 8 Oct 2012 23:11:21 EST My first recipe Today I added my first recipe to SPRecipes. I was suprised that it was healthier than I thought it was. I don't mind things with moderate fat content, we do need some. It has always been a nice Sunday dinner meal. I had not done a calorie calculation and was surprised at how easy it was. Yeah! Sun, 7 Oct 2012 21:22:17 EST Relaxation Very little is going on today, I did walk and stick with my diet plan. But very little real activity is happening around here. I will leave it there, as there is little to talk about. Sat, 6 Oct 2012 20:55:23 EST Change in plans today I woke to temps of under 35. I really do not handle cold very well. I decided to spend time and energy cleaning the man cave out getting it ready for the workout room. The man cave consists of 4 bedrooms and a bathroom. In the process of cleaning my youngest son decided he wants to move into a different room. We will be moving him into the room tonight. Then I will work on scouring another room to turn into the workout room. The best part about my son wanting the other bedroom is that ... Fri, 5 Oct 2012 16:28:53 EST Cold We are already in a freeze warning. It is suppose to get very cold again tonight. I hope I survive until my work-out room is ready. Thu, 4 Oct 2012 22:33:06 EST BDay Party Since this is my daughter's birthday I will take tonight off, since this is a celebration for me too. I carried and brought her into the world. I will celebrate her life with her. Wed, 3 Oct 2012 15:54:28 EST Preparing for Winter Good Morning everyone! I don't know if I will ever get tired of the euphoric feeling you get after working out. I power-walk and love it. I love the sweaty feeling I get and increase in heart rate. This has been so wonderful. Everyone else sounds great, sinus infections are always horrible. I usually get them, but I have not had a cold since March about the time I started. I got the flu then and was in bed for about a week, it took a week to recover then I out exercising again. I have... Tue, 2 Oct 2012 13:24:32 EST Dealing with allergies at meal times A few weeks back I wrote that I make more than one meal here for my family. There were several people who wrote that they don't/won't and it got to thinking about why I do. It didn't take too long to remember, with the allergies in my family it is almost a necessity. My two oldest get stomach aches and headaches if they eat milk fat. Me and my daughter have horrible GI issues if we eat soy. My husband has Chrohn's and cannot eat whole grains and fibrous vegetables like celery, they will ... Mon, 1 Oct 2012 13:54:05 EST Goals I light of my failure for the month of September, I have decided to have give my goals a range. I never set goals on how many inches or pounds to lose, that would not be healthy for me. But I did put a range in the amount of exercise I get and the number of days I exercise. I realized I need a maximum amount so I do not get obsessed or lose touch with reality here. I need those days for healing both physically and mentally. I do feel ready to attack this next set of goals now. Sun, 30 Sep 2012 10:29:05 EST Failure It looks like I won't quite make my goals for the month. Though I have already walked over 125 miles this month and put in 2250 minutes of exercise. This is still an improvement. The problem came when the smoke got so bad I could barely breathe in my house let alone outside. It seemed I couldn't get away from it. There have been people traveling just to get away from it. Anyway, I had to stay home and not walk, getting behind in my milage. I did try to make it up a little only to end u... Sat, 29 Sep 2012 13:01:13 EST Sewing day Saturday I have made plans with one of my dearest friends to get up early, meet to walk, then spend the rest of the day sewing. What this means is me help her and her daughter along with their projects, since I am teaching, and me working by hand on my projects. We will have lunch together and they'll probably leave before dinner. This sounds like so much fun. I'm a country girl at heart and love these type of things. Maybe I should have been Amish, lol, no I like my fancy stuff too. The night w... Fri, 28 Sep 2012 21:38:45 EST Interview This morning I received a call from a company I applied for a job with. It was a phone interview, since the company is 400 miles away from here. This company helps staff nursing homes and in-home health agencies primarily in the inland northwest. The pay is VERY good and the hours are fine. My biggest concern is the new routine it will bring. I will be traveling from job to job all over Idaho and Washington. They pay for food, lodging, gas, etc, but what about my new healthy life style?... Thu, 27 Sep 2012 16:16:41 EST Changes I had been losing very steady, a little at a time, but losing until the middle of last week. I started gaining a little at a time, but still gaining. I got frustrated and lowered my caloric intake today after 10 straight days of weight gain with no changes to my diet. I hope this fixes my problem, if not I raise my calories. I am getting ready to change my daily exercise regimine as well, starting the first of October. I just need the drive to stick with it. I haven't been sick like a l... Wed, 26 Sep 2012 21:30:45 EST Doing it! I am very close to making my goals of walking 150 miles this month and exercising 2500 minutes too. It feels great. I may have to put an extra push in this week to get all the miles in since I was unable to walk a few days due to the heavy smoke in the area. It has pretty much cleared and shouldn't be a problem anymore. But I have 36 miles left and 5 more days to do it. I will probably just keep with my 6.25 miles every morning and throw in an evening walk of about 5 miles, that should d... Tue, 25 Sep 2012 20:36:19 EST No exercise My walking partner had to cancel due to injury, I normally would have gone but I started seeing all this stuff I could do around the house. I did some of them, but got a call about possible job and got busy with that. I didn't exercise today, but may have job. I think it was a wash. I should know in a couple days if I do have the job, praying right now. It pays really good, but away from home. I still pray I get it. I plan to do a little more exercise over the next few days so I can ma... Mon, 24 Sep 2012 21:30:56 EST Man vs Food? Curious about if anyone's view of this show or similar shows have changed since joining SP? Sun, 23 Sep 2012 22:59:46 EST Smoke Ugh!... I woke at 4:30 am with asthma problems. If I can barely breathe in my sleep, I have no business walking outside. Though tonight a nice breeze came up and cleared it up a bit. I will walk in the morning. I just hate these days when I can't, I get so antsy, I just get to itching to do something. At least I know I will get to do it early tomorrow. Sat, 22 Sep 2012 22:15:47 EST Indecision... It is really smokey here again and I want to go walking, but I have asthma and shouldn't be out in it. But I feel like a sloth if I don't, and I'll have my inhaler with me. Hmmm... Decisions! I may just wait and see in the morning. Fri, 21 Sep 2012 21:25:05 EST No Short Cuts When it comes to weight loss and getting fit I have heard of A LOT of gimmicks. There are underwear and belts that do it, after all you don't have to do anything but sit there. There are powders, drops, and pills that somehow change your metabolism taking weight off. There are even surgeries that change your internal makeup keeping you from eating. I have even seen the most bizarre diets of soup and bananas, or something like that. I'm not saying that some of them don't work, at least fo... Thu, 20 Sep 2012 22:15:50 EST Below 250 I woke up, got on the scale and it read 249.9. I have not been under 250 since before I got pregnant with my daughter who will be 17 in 2 weeks. The thing is I did try to lose weight before. I would have gladly lost the weight if I had known how. There are many things I have learn since joining SP over 6 months ago. I would always try to lose then after 20-25 lbs astop losing for months, get frustrated and stop dieting. I even realized I had to make life style changes meant to be perman... Wed, 19 Sep 2012 19:23:30 EST My funny kids... We went to Wal-Mart where my youngest (14) did a sample of a soda only to learn it was Coke. Of all the things for him to be allergic to, he is very allergic to Coca-cola. I asked him if he felt normal, he said "as normal as I ever do." I asked him if he was hot, he said "other than the physical no." Questions continued with similar answers, all a little mouthy, for a few minutes. My daughter (16) then points at him and says, "this is what happens when two smart-alecks reproduce." We couldn't... Tue, 18 Sep 2012 20:16:10 EST Losing it I can't believe how much confidence I have gained in losing weight. I feel great and know I can do more, it's great. Mon, 17 Sep 2012 15:11:11 EST I'm a jogger...Kind of Today I had an over-whelming urge to jog. I really wanted to try it again after all this time. So during my walk I did it. I jogged about 1/16 of a mile at a time 5 separate times. Until my chest felt like it would explode. I was pleasantly surprised to find it only took 3-4 minutes until I was at my pre-jog heart and respiration rate, which really is pretty quick. It felt wonderful. I won't do this everyday, maybe every other day for a few weeks, at least until it feels more natural t... Sun, 16 Sep 2012 22:21:28 EST Excuse free Somewhere on my journey I started shedding my excuses for not eating right or not exercising. I used to say, my back won't let me, or I just can't do it. Even "hormone problems" as an excuse doesn't work for me either. I just do it whether I want to or not, I am always happy I did the exercising or ate right. I am proud that this has been one of my changes, but I do see it in others. I try not to judge, but how do you point it out to help them? I'm not sure if it's my job or not, do I l... Sat, 15 Sep 2012 16:23:26 EST got a lot done We are now in a bad air advisory. I chose to stay inside I clean, I mean really deep clean. It counts too. I put in 90 mins of heavy cleaning and didn't count some of the rest, just straightening and going through things. But my house looks great and smells better than outside. I will walk in the early morning while the air is still cool, less smoke in the air at that time. We'll see how the rest of everything goes. Fri, 14 Sep 2012 20:30:59 EST smoke There is a lot of smoke in the air from nearby wildfires. It has given me a huge headache and I really don't feel good. I am doing my minimum here, please forgive that. Thu, 13 Sep 2012 23:26:15 EST The Jeans I have had this pair of jeans for 16 yrs. They were bought for me on my 25th birthday by my dad. I love them. I was able to wear them when they were bought for 8 months, then couldn't because I was pregnant. After I had the baby I was able to wear them for about 6 months, but because I had hormone issues I gained weight, I could no longer wear them. Then nine years ago I lost 40 lbs and wore them for 3 months before the weight came back on. And I was able to wear them for a couple month... Wed, 12 Sep 2012 20:52:27 EST 9/11 This is a day where I sit back and take a look at my life. Am I doing everything I need to be doing for others? Does my life mean anything? What more could I be doing? Often the answers are the same from year to year. This year I have made forward progress. I start making my list of things I want to accomplish for next year. I do have many things new for my list in 2013. This step, joining SparkPeople, has truly been a positive step in many ways for me. I hope others see the same for... Tue, 11 Sep 2012 19:49:17 EST Me and my football found that following only one team is not enough of the football experience for me. After watching it for many, many years I have 4 favorites. My number one favorite is the Seattle Seahawks. My number two is the Dallas Cowboys. Then I have a tie for my third favorite between the San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears. This list has stuck with me for some time now, since the Bears play at 10am my time, I'm up and getting ready to do my 10K. I also follow college football on Saturday and I do ha... Mon, 10 Sep 2012 19:06:45 EST Spreading the Spark! My husband just told me if I wait a bit he'll walk with me. I'm so excited! He's never walked with me yet and I think he'll love it. We were talking yesterday about how I plan to stay in shape over the winter months and I told him of my plans to either continue the walking or go to the gym. He really like that idea and then talked about how he probably should try to get into better shape, sounding like it was more in theory than actual, then this morning told me he was planning to join me. Ta... Sun, 9 Sep 2012 15:27:16 EST WTG Since I lost 5.5lbs this week, I did take today off. I realize I did need it and am excited for tomorrow. I'll even get my walk in early so I can watch the Bears. Sat, 8 Sep 2012 22:20:06 EST Weekend I do try to allow myself 2 meals off a month. I feel better and more able to continue when I do, I don't feel deprived this way. BUT, I really don't have the desire for anything in particular. It's been a couple weeks since my last night off, hmm... I'm not sure what I will do, but I think I should have my meal today or tomorrow. I need to plan it. Fri, 7 Sep 2012 17:33:54 EST I received a flower I went to get dinner from the store the other night and a man walking out with me asked me if he knew me. I told him I couldn't think of where, he asked if I went to a local church, I told him we used to. He then pulled a flower from the bunch he was buying and said that was okay and handed me the flower. He said this was because I was kind and to keep me looking good. I thanked him and went on my way. I was pleasantly surprised, what a nice gift. Thu, 6 Sep 2012 17:36:30 EST Cold No the weather is not what I would call cold yet, 80's can hardly be considered cold, but since I have lost the majority of my weight in the warmer months I find that I am cold more often than I am used to. My husband has even been complaining about how cold my hands and feet have been in the last couple weeks. I am bundling up and wearing warm socks, but that only helps so much. I didn't realize this would be a side effect of weight loss, but I am not complaining, it just means I'll have ... Wed, 5 Sep 2012 22:07:25 EST Goal Change I found out Saturday that the distance I thought I had been going, had really been considerable less by about a mile. I was very disappointed about the revelation, but became determined to to truly walk a 10K every morning. What I didn't count on is how much that extra mile was going to take out of me. I was also determined to add in a second shorter workout later in the day, but I am too tired to add it now. Ironically the time it takes to make the added mile may add enough extra minutes... Tue, 4 Sep 2012 22:01:12 EST The Atkin's Diet The Atkin's Diet, I will weigh in here and take it however you wish, but please don't get offended. I was in nursing school when Dr. Atkins died from slipping on ice and hitting his head. His autopsy was released and showed severe heart disease, there were also signs of kidney and liver failure. This shows that either it was not a healthy diet or he was unable to stick to it. We also get many patients who have been on the diet with artery blockage, kidney or liver failure. No carbs or li... Mon, 3 Sep 2012 19:30:10 EST Maps I have 2 different maps, possibly 3 soon where I can get my 10K in daily and change up the scenery a little, I'm excited to start tomorrow. Sun, 2 Sep 2012 18:35:24 EST Discovery I just learned today that the 10K I thoguht I had been doing is about a half mile short. I was following the trail markers. Oh well! I plan to remedy this starting tomorrow so my times will be longer, but that's ok. I did lose half pound this week and a inch from my waist and half inch from my hips this month. I will take it. Even slow progress is still progress. Sat, 1 Sep 2012 23:21:10 EST Gone My cat is gone. He went very peacefully laying in my arms, his brother (feline) taking care of him. He is no longer suffering. The vet did say after 32 yrs of practice she has yet to see his symptoms not be cancer. He will be very missed and I will try not to write too mush about my ordeal. Fri, 31 Aug 2012 19:27:01 EST Hmmm... I'm not sure what to say, I keep thinking about hwving to say good-bye to my kitty tomorrow. I will be fine, just miss him and his anctics. I could go on and on, but I won't. Thu, 30 Aug 2012 22:29:40 EST
