SLIMLILA's SparkPeople Blog SLIMLILA's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Busy weeks coming up Have been letting as many people who know my friend in hospital, know that she is there and will be leaving, so they should at least go see her to say good bye.

Now, more snow is coming, it better be gone by Thurs, cuz I am going on a road trip. I am driving to PEI to my mom's and then with my bro to Ontario, where I will be spending a couple days with a teacher friend I haven't seen in 10yrs. She already has a massage, reflexology and aquasize booked for us. Before I go I have ... Mon, 27 Mar 2017 19:32:22 EST and so spring arrives well, since spring arrived, we have had a snow storm, an ice storm and a blizzard....Mother Nature forget to set her clock??

Went to book club today, started the book yesterday, and only have 90 pgs left. I am loving the book, but no one else liked it. The Lake of Dreams by Kim Edwards....

Went to see a book club member whose in hospital, she's 86 now, and the family is trying to find her a nursing home. She's accepts it and seems to have a good attitude about it. S... Thu, 23 Mar 2017 20:30:50 EST What a day! Well, yesterday we went for a nice hike in the forest beside a gurgling stream... very nice, good temp with winter tights and my cords I was comfy.

So today... silly dog was determined to have me out of bed by 8:30am.... Which gave me time to do a 2 mi walk with Leslie and the gang and have a bubble bath and get to church on time.
We had someone new walk into our church and she misunderstood and took offence to what the pastor was saying about "cracked pots". anyway two of th... Sun, 19 Mar 2017 19:57:25 EST a Fake Storm! I guess some people got it, but we got nearly nothing, and at the most, it was over by a.m. It took me less than 5 min. to clear the slush from the driveway, and it was more like playing in the mud, except it was all water... very spring like.. think it is +6c out

Well, blood sugar this a.m. was 5.5... that was a surprise, but lest I get overconfident thinking I don't really have diabetes, or I have changed my diet enough that I don't have to worry about it any more, I checked at ... Wed, 15 Mar 2017 10:57:30 EST Nor'easter on the way WEll, we went walking today to try to get in a little bit ahead of the big storm on its way. Buddy and I did 3 laps at the brook. Nice spring like weather.
Had a very nice Bible study today on the book of James and the danger of that little old tongue!!!
Took my niece out for some groceries. Spent an hour last nite sending messages out to all my contact list to promote my story on a website I was asked to do a story for...

I had lots of nice comments b... Tue, 14 Mar 2017 23:11:26 EST catchup -28 and -29C temps have kept me inside and being lazy for 2 days. I am encouraged that my blood sugars are back in the 6's and 7's.....
Changed my clock, but slept thru to 10:30 so I missed church today.
Knitted a pretty scarf today, and talked to my mother. she has to go for surgery on April 5
Made very colorful and tasty stuffed peppers for supper. Sun, 12 Mar 2017 22:19:26 EST What more can I say? Met my friend today and asked how her dh's blood sugar was and she said, she didn't even check!

I need to NOT stress over her behaviour, I can only do the best for me. I can tell people the right way, but if they don't want to hear it or do it, that's all there is to it. Fri, 10 Mar 2017 23:24:18 EST Stupid things! OMG... a friend told me today that she has been giving her dh his insulin - opposite to what it should be. His slow acting, she was giving to him at each meal.... his fast actiing, she was giving him for overnite.
I asked how his b.s. were and she told me he had lost his meter, so they had no idea what his sugars were... any wonder he had no energy and spent so much time in bed... he's probably very lucky he is NOT dead!
I gave her my other meter my brother gave me and about $300 w... Thu, 9 Mar 2017 22:51:37 EST things are looking up Well, a vice-like sinus headache finally persuaded me to get to the store and buy some sinus cold meds...
I had a bit more energy today. I cleaned out a couple shelves in my fridge, made cole slaw, bean salad and s/f jello salad. Went to Bible Study, the library, the store, and actually did a Weight Watcher 30 min. walk video. Tue, 7 Mar 2017 19:09:39 EST Not a good week Well, a sinus thing has kept me lazy this week. Well, lazy, though I did get out to 3 part-time days, doctor appt, diabetic clinic appt, wrote 2 stories, got one finalized and sent in for deadline, so not a total washout.

I think I got in one 2 mi WATP, but no energy for any more. I vaguely remember taking Buddy for a short walk outside too... And I helped a friend with a writing assignment. Skipped my knitting club, but spent time on u-tube and learning tunisian crochet. <B... Sun, 5 Mar 2017 19:27:05 EST Doctor very pleased! WEnt for doc appt today and got bloodwork results. He was very pleased and actually said I might have the best bloodwork of all his diabetic patients. My A1C went down from 9.5 to 7.9!!! He said I should aim for 7.5 but not to go lower than 7 because then I would be experiencing too many lows and that is not good. Also, though my overall cholesterol is high, my ratio and my HDL are wonderful... Even my triglycerides are in normal range again. He also said to reduce one of my pills.. Tue, 28 Feb 2017 23:53:15 EST 10 C in February!!! Looked forward all week to a hike with a friend. We went to a new trail we had heard of, but with all the melting at that temperature and the run-off at the brook, it would be much better as a spring hike. So, now we know where it is and will definitely be back.
Then we drove down town and found streets blocked off cuz they were doing horse and wagon rides around our local park, so we went there. Then we went through a tunnel we didnt' know was there and walked to the boardwalk,w hich... Mon, 27 Feb 2017 21:59:08 EST FReaky Friday! Aighhghghghhhg! Had a call first thing this am asking if I had seen one of our book club members who didn't show yesterday... she's 86. so apparently her homecare worker went to her house twice and she wasn't home...Anyway, I drove over and her car was home, but no answer at either door and they were locked. I worried about her dog. Anyway, long story short, and after much stress, found out she had fallen on ice and someone had seen her far and called 911 and ambulance took her to hospital... Fri, 24 Feb 2017 23:31:19 EST Busy week WEds. - pot luck and AGM at church, I am now the new treasurer, so gotta meet with out-going to learn how and what to do.
Thurs. - book club (had a 500 pg bk to finish, just under the wire at noon... The Time Traveller's Wife - interesting, I wasn't going to read it, but I really did enjoy it. We also had a birthday party for our 96 y.o. book club member, with her 2 dd's coming in. The local reporter was there too.
Then I did some more research while I was there for my story due n... Thu, 23 Feb 2017 23:40:29 EST Tuesday Well, no more snow, just watching it melt... gone down at least a foot and a half as measured against my fence.

Got a call from an 86 y.o. from my book club asking if I would take her to an eye doc appt. So, I took her to my Bible study first and then we went there. I showed her the "knitted Knockers" I am knitting and she is going to start knitting them too. (for breast cancer survivors to use rather than those prostheses which cost about $350 and are hot and heavy and uncomfort... Tue, 21 Feb 2017 23:45:11 EST Round 3 - practice makes perfect Yes, I can count another 30 min of cardio spent snow shovelling again... they say on tv we have had 158 cm of snow so far this month (or is it this winter) - guess I wasn;t listening that close.
I learned my lesson the other day, I make sure I eat breakfast before I go out. Sinus headache is gone, but bit of a runny nose still, so had another hot echinacea

B - eggs-n-0ats
snk - 2 tbsp hemp hearts
L - imitation crab, maio, toppables crackers, yogurt, cranberries
... Thu, 16 Feb 2017 19:07:07 EST And once more.... for practice well not 80 min. shovelling, but there was another 30 min. cleanup from the plow before we went into the city for dh's eye doc and my massage. I made a mistake in staying at his appt with him and by the time I ate my cool chick salad, which I had planned and brought with me, it was already 1:30, so too longer between meals considering I shovelled too. So, the helpful receptionist brought me chocolate, cuz i did feel shakey. kind of felt that way til after I had a good supper...
and mo... Wed, 15 Feb 2017 23:16:46 EST OH yes I did! I did 80 min of cardio today in the form of snow shovelling... yes, when you get 60 cm you can count it as your exercise for the day... and the plow has been by several times since, so I know there will be lots more snow out there to shovel in the a.m. before we go for appts... luckily, mine is for a massage, I daresay I am going to need it.

I also had a low blood sugar today. It was supper time and I felt the shakes coming in and I was halfway thru making supper, so I ate some co... Tue, 14 Feb 2017 23:45:48 EST Sunday - made fairly wise choices at church lunch Well, I had to go to an event at 1pm and had taken a Protein Bar w/ me in case there weren't suitable foods available at church lunch. But, it wasn't bad, some turkey, ham, cheese, a small heart-shaped sandwich, tea, and a coconut square... that was the no-no!

But, I did Walk & Kick before I went to church.
Still nursing this flu thingie... dull sinus headache and b.s. was 8.3 this a.m. but 6.9 prior to supper. Went treasure hunting at Value a few little thin... Sun, 12 Feb 2017 20:52:57 EST Saturday on a cold winter day b.s. was down to 6.7 this a.m. when I woke at 8:30 and I dozed off again and at 10, it was 9.5

Read Nicholas Sparks, "Two by Two", did dishes, didn't cook supper, have just about all the salad dishes etc. used up, except the Texas Caviar

Drinking my echinacea.... lazy day.. too cold to go out Sat, 11 Feb 2017 22:49:08 EST 10.5 today and I don't know why Since I am new to insulin, I feel I need to still be measuring my b.s. at least daily, maybe not the 7 times a day I was doing it at the beginning, though my numbers were a lot better when I was keeping such close track. I still think this has to do a bit with the 'sniffles" because I didn't do anything wild or crazy last nite at all. I exercised for 40 min. Even mindfully ate... had an English muffin, calculated what it would be with PBJ and limited it to 1/2 a muffin... I am doing the ri... Fri, 10 Feb 2017 10:34:38 EST 10.3 - something is definitely going on This is getting annoying.... I had salad twice yesterday and stir fry veggies for supper, I did have some dark chocolate, but with all that shovelling yd, it shouldnt' have been anything... this really has to have something to do with holding this flu at bay.... glad I see the dietician next Tuesday...
No shovelling td, storm won't arrive till overnite I guess.

B - egg foo yung, homemade with all healthy stuff, and lo carb, strawberries and yogurt
L - salad

... Thu, 9 Feb 2017 10:45:03 EST More snow shovelling... and a big storm coming tomorrow Well so far this winter, it's been easy, but now this is shovelling 3 times in 3 days and big storm due tm. It took me 45 to shovel out today, and it was freezing drizzle, so after only 10 min, I had to come in and get a dry coat. When I finished I had to strip off ski pants and mitts etc. and put it all in the dryer.

I had gone to do the front... where it's only for the postal worker's delivery when I was shovelling when a plow came by. He turned toward me and I backed up and h... Wed, 8 Feb 2017 23:26:50 EST Tuesday This really has to be a low grade fever raising my blood sugar, the numbers are just out of whack and despite how hard I am working, nothing positive seems to be happening. But then again, I am expecting perfection. Someone commented that it took months for their numbers to go down . I guess mine went down perfectly right away and now they are levelled out and doing weird things. My body is just trying to prove to me that I am no longer the one in control.

Ok I am just blathe... Tue, 7 Feb 2017 23:01:38 EST 7.7 today... still decent, but not sure why it would be up, had healthy snack, exercised, even went to bed early...woohoo. I guess diabetes is just unpredictable.

This is 12 weeks now I have been on insulin, watching and tracking food and exercising at least 5 times a week, and still no weight loss. But, have to keep my spirits up with the info that Insulin is a weight-gaining hormone and most people who start on it do gain some weight. So technically, I am still within 4 lbs, went up 2 high... Mon, 6 Feb 2017 09:38:45 EST And today.... 6.0 Which, yes, I am tickled pink about this b.s. and it is as it should be. Planning on a WATP later.

B - cheerios multigrain w bran buds, skim milk and Mocha Latte
L - at church, ham and turkey and cheese cubes and devilled eggs and small sandwiches
Snk - applesauce,
Supper - homemade low GI Pork Schnitzel & cole slaw, baked potato chips, texas caviar, boiled carrots and parsnips

Pleased to see there were so many choices at church lunch today, I didn't h... Sun, 5 Feb 2017 17:08:39 EST 11.1 - I have no idea why That was quite the shocker this a.m. and I have no idea why the b.s. was so high. I was almost going to take it twice cuz I didn't see how it could be that high. Then at about 3 hrs. later, I was 12.5.... Last nite's snack was all bran buds and yogurt.

Today I made cole slaw, fruit cocktail s/f jello, texas caviar (black bean, corn & salsa & cumin)

B - Microwave oat bran porridge
L - pumpkin beef broth with frozen veggies, coconut cookie, fruit cocktail, turkey wei... Sat, 4 Feb 2017 23:31:34 EST OK back on track Yes, my b.s. was 7.4 today. Even pharmacist told me that is good and not to "stress" over the occasional 10, it will still happen. But, I know for a fact it was stress and NOT me messing up.

Shopped for an hour and a half this am, got lots of good deals... We've cashed in $70 in free groceries with store reward program since Jan. 1 and I got us up to another free $20 with all the sales today. Shopped for my niece and got her at least 11 meat meals for $40...I'm good!!!
<BR... Fri, 3 Feb 2017 13:37:41 EST Oops where did those 3 days go? Well, Tuesday is a "go to town" day. I got myself a new top and some more wool....OCD or treasure hunt at Value Village.
Wednesday was supposed to be an African dance demo for Black History Month, but the presenter got the flu and it was cancelled.
Thursday, had gotten email from my editor at nite. He called first thing and I had to spend 3 hrs. editing my article down from 1750 words to about 1000 words... sure is harder to edit than it is to write. I just hope I didn'... Thu, 2 Feb 2017 18:10:57 EST Monday - +6C and a good day for walking I got called in to work for 2 hr this am. When I got home I called a friend who said she was going to call me, anyway, we got out for a walk at the dam. She's recovering from flu so it was only 2 laps. I was going to do another lap on my own, but the cold was getting into my back, so I changed my mind. As I was leaving there was a pig walking down the street... a fat, white, pot-bellied pig. I pulled the car over to another spot to try to take his picture, but he took off too quick...darn.... Mon, 30 Jan 2017 21:39:25 EST Sunday Well, was late this am cuz I couldn't sleep last nite. So, I had cheerios w/ bran buds and took my grapefruit with me to have at lunch, so I avoided all sweets there.
Lunch - leftover Asian noodle salad
Supper - put rice, can tomatoes, black beans, browned ground pork, mushrooms in rice cooker
Snk - crab, peanuts, cheese, applesauce

No exercise day.

Walked around the stores Sun, 29 Jan 2017 22:33:35 EST Variety of exercise today I did the WATP Kickboxing today and then went dancing tonite. That would be a lot of calories an extra 595 I think they said.

B - 1/2 bagel, PBJ. strawberries and yogurt
L - Reuben sandwich, apple, S/F pudding
S- Asian noodle salad (bk of KNorr pkg rcp - cole slaw mix, apple, green pepper, onion and peanut butter butter and apple cider vinegar) - with a maple marinated salmon
Snk - blackberries, yogurt, bran buds Sat, 28 Jan 2017 23:18:25 EST Why do other exercises if not to burn calories? I did a 30 min. exercise ball workout today and I was sweating, but when I tried to track it, all I could come up with were 3 of Coach Nicole's to about that time and it came to a grand total of under 100??? What gives? I also did a Prevention Fit in 10 video and same, nearly no calories.

my other diabetic friend brought 2 types of squares to knitting tonite, date squares because she knows how much I like them!!

I guess WATP is really the best bang for my buck... Sat, 28 Jan 2017 00:37:59 EST Looks like April out there That's cheering me up. I know it could snow tomorrow and that whole picture would change, but it sure looks good. Probably going to do a lot of damage in some way or another, ie. farmers etc.

Took Buddy for his nail clip and it was so nice, we continued on our walk for awhile. Nice to walk outside on the sidewalk for a change.

Book club was fun as usual. Not much else going on today. I did notice that a 25 min walk only burned 94 cal, but if I tracked a 30 min. WATP... Thu, 26 Jan 2017 19:23:59 EST Winter or what? Strangest winter ever. we had heavy rain and high winds again today. I think it got up to +4C but it was too wet to go out to check.

I had to do a story today as my editor emailed yd and told me I could have a story in the last copy of the paper before it closes, but it had to be done today. I had 2 ready but they were both too long, so I started at the beginning and made it only 1000 words.

My skinny friend isn't working this year but gone back to school. She is pu... Wed, 25 Jan 2017 23:51:45 EST Yikes! Hated seeing a 10.0 on my diabetes meter this a.m. Shock! So much for people who think all they have to do is add insulin and they will be all better. I ate bag of nuts and seeds last nite, healthy right? But, the numbers for my b.s. this a.m. didn't say so. Then I realized that I also ate these little nut and seed crackers all evening. It is so much the diet not the drugs or other stuff. Also, I had knitting club last nite and then I wanted to finish the hat I had started so knitting and Nashville it was last nite, instead of walking w... Sat, 21 Jan 2017 10:23:09 EST Well, 2 days in a row above 9, so maybe nurse wasn't right. But then again, it was a friend's birthday yd and her dh made the double decker carrot cake, so how could I refuse? And it was good., Then, though I went out dancing, after I don't know how many months, they were passing around fudge. But I think I will up the insulin dosage 1 unit tonite.

So, today, read for a while, went on computer for awhile, did dishes, am going to make a slow cooker before I go to my massage... Nice new shiny bright snow, enough to be pretty, but not enough... Fri, 20 Jan 2017 11:14:53 EST Followed advice and a good surprise followed OK, i have to admit I was skeptical about the nurse's advice to cut my insulin back by 2 units, but guess what, I actually did what I was told yesterday. I cut it back and this a.m. my b,s, was 6.8. Quite a surprise. I didn't expect it at all, had a lousy short sleep cuz the new Call the Midwife started and we were watching that till almost 2:30!!! We went to town late yesterday and though I got myself a new top for free with my After Christmas Value Village gift card, we didnt' eat well.... Wed, 18 Jan 2017 09:49:47 EST Still worried, but saw professionals today Well, I still wonder, don't know why the low b.s. happened when I had done everything right. But I saw pharmacist, dietician and diabetic nurse today and told them all, nearly all of my diabetic team! The nurse suggested I cut back 2 units of my insulin but the other two were surprised and couldn't explain it either. So I guess what I learn from this is that diabetes is unpredictable and much as you try to do everything right, it still has a mind of its own, and you just have to be aware ... Tue, 17 Jan 2017 13:06:37 EST Day after the scarey episode I was still shakey till after I had lunch, and still a little fearful. At nite, I was afraid to do my exercise since I usually do them at time I took the low last nite. So instead I ate.....lots of cashews and some other stuff...duh? Not too smart, was I?

But I do feel normal today so I did my WATP just before I had a bubble bath and made Rockin' Morrocan Stew for supper. Spent hours going through my recipes...woohoo. I have such good rcps... made a low GI lentil and chickpea s... Mon, 16 Jan 2017 09:55:25 EST Scarey low blood sugar episode I didn't even realize this was happening. I had taken my insulin about 11:30 and shortly after, I tested and my b.s. was 8.4 which is about 150 in US readings. But I walked out to the kitchen and noticed I was dizzy, dismissed it. Then as I sat watching tv, I started sweating profusely, didn't even realize it at the time, my hair was soaked. I was getting nauseous and finding it really hot. I did NOT feel good. But I had just taken my b.s. barely half an hour before so I didn't even con... Sun, 15 Jan 2017 08:57:45 EST Changed disappointment into success Thank you all for your comments... I know how I could have done better...for some reason when I come home from being away for a while, I seem to need to eat for comfort and I didn't plan for that and I ate too much misc. stuff.. If I had had some snack things planned, I could have taken better care of that situation... something to work on for next time

Today got up to +10C and I was anxious to go for a walk all day. I called a friend at 10am but she was fighting a cold, so I wait... Fri, 13 Jan 2017 23:14:06 EST This day needs to be planned. Short notice call to go work 11-1 today and then a 1:30 appt at the diabetic clinic and that took 2 hrs. so I got home at 5 to 4 and had to be in the city for 4:30. I stopped at home before my diabetic appt and had leftover chili, and then I made an egg salad on those puffed wheat bowls with a greek salad to take with me to my other meeting.
Then on the way home there was a demo at the library so I stopped there and then at the grocery store for a few things.. gettign home at 9pm.. wo... Thu, 12 Jan 2017 21:19:45 EST Off to town, but NOT off my program! Well, if I tracked all my food, I had a pretty good day, I am about 100 cal under my "quota" but still old habits die heard, cuz I didn't even look at how I met my other goals. And that's before I do any exercise... My Resolution is to exercise 5 days a week, but I have a headache, an unusual ocurrence for me. but who knows maybe WATP would take away the headache?!?

We went to town and stopped for supper. Sun, 8 Jan 2017 00:08:15 EST Yes, that was over and done with and a much better day today! Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance....wait, I think that is my motto.... and that was how today went, very well. I had my meals on time and stayed within my carb limits, I think anyway, still have to track my food. But it looks like today will be my No Exercise, its already 12:30... too late

Went to the library this a.m. and took some more pics for my article, now just have to figure out how to take the pics from the cell to make them a .jpeg I can send to the editor. I had book club this afternoon at 2pm when I should have been having a planned lunch, so that was off plan, and then I got the research info I needed at library and stayed there taking notes and didn't get home till over an hour after my scheduled meal time. All I had to have done, was ask them to hold the file and gone back later or tomorrow.... so that through everything off and I munched all nite... my supper wasn't balanced and I guess I was looking for balance all nit...
