SHIMMERMAMA's SparkPeople Blog SHIMMERMAMA's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Smart words from a Sparkfriend It's been awhile, I know. I'll get back into blogging soon. Things in life have just been crazy. I did manage to climb Half Dome and make it back down again, but I'll do a catchup post on that later. For now, I wanted to share these words of wisdom that one of my Sparkfriends had posted and asked people to pass on.

To everyone out there in Sparkland...I'm not always consistent in reading blogs or checking in, but I care about each and every one of you and am here for you if you eve... Tue, 15 Oct 2013 13:10:08 EST My next great adventure... I'm so excited I can barely type about it, but when I get down to thinking about it I think I'm equal parts nervous and excited! My next great adventure is going to be climbing Half Dome in Yosemite National Park!!! Anyone who's familiar with the North Face brand will recognize it as their logo or from iconic pictures like this one:

The part that they don't show you is how you get up to the top, the fa... Tue, 6 Aug 2013 17:12:37 EST Happy Birthday to me! Let's Fly, Teddies! Goodbye 25 and hello 26! Today I may be closer to 30 than I was to 20, but I think I'm just going to have to be ok with that. Who cares how old I am if I am young at heart, healthy and happy! I've been thoroughly spoiled for my birthday. I got to go see Shrek the Musical (hilarious!) and I also got tickets to go see Bruno Mars! So excited!

I am also lucky enough to get to share my birthday with the start of the 5% summer challenge! I've been slacking on getting all my challenge s... Sat, 27 Jul 2013 12:42:10 EST bootcamps + end of the challenge Well I was going to post boot camp workouts here on my blog and that seems to have failed. I missed last Friday and Monday because I went home to visit my family. It was hell getting there...literally. Guys, do NOT fly Frontier. Sheesh. They close their counter 45 min before the flight and B, Shimmer, and I ran up at 44 minutes 30 seconds. They wouldn't let us on the plane and we had to fly from two separate airports later that night. Awful!

A weekend of this sure helped though: <... Fri, 12 Jul 2013 18:45:44 EST I survived GOYA Camp Day 1! Thanks to a sweet Groupon deal, I am trying something that I would never otherwise do. It requires me to get my lazy bum out of bed before the sun is up, but I hope I will make some friends and get in better shape because of it.

Before I get there though, I need to work on what to do when visiting family. I spent the weekend with B's family in San Diego and ate like there was no tomorrow. I stayed away from alcohol, but still ended up eating way too much! On the last week of the 5%... Mon, 1 Jul 2013 17:07:55 EST CostcO-M-G! It's not the best situation in the world for calories and such, but every day my coworkers and I eat lunch together. Someone goes out and gets takeout and then we all sit together and eat (there are only 5 of us and one's on maternity leave). I've been compensating by ordering salads, leaving off dressings, not drinking soda, taking the skin off chicken, etc. This gets kind of expensive, but we do take turns.

B and I were at Costco and decided we should get lunch from there, since ... Fri, 14 Jun 2013 16:34:26 EST Things are looking up The first thing I need to do is say a huge 304 to all of my Sparkfriends who commented on my "down in the dumps" post. I took your advice/suggestions to heart and things are starting to get better. Of course like most life issues, they got worse before they got better. It seems like we are fighting less, but have shorter fuses when we do fight. Our friends ended up not coming for the weekend and it's probably better that way because if they had come we would have been fighting mo... Sun, 2 Jun 2013 16:22:59 EST down in the dumps I don't want to do this here, but I realized I don't really have someone I can vent to that's close by and that's just made me feel worse.

B and I have been fighting. A lot. It's affecting everything in my life and I don't want it to. I haven't been exercising of even taking as good of care of my furbaby and I should. The things we fight about are stupid, little things...not even worth the time to argue about, but argue we do.

I think I could handle it if that's all it ... Wed, 29 May 2013 17:42:35 EST Family is great for the mood, bad for the waistline. Last weekend I got to travel back to Colorado and it was great! The main reason B and I went back was to attend my sister's engagement party. They're not getting married until next May, but are getting the celebrations started early. Personally, I don't really see the point of the engagement party...especially since it was announced on facebook and at family gatherings, so everyone already knew and had already congratulated them... The change of pace and chance to go home was totally worth i... Thu, 23 May 2013 18:26:13 EST Starting the 2013 Spring Into Summer 5% Challenge! 3...2...1...takeoff??

Well here we go. After lurking around on Sparkpeople for sometime now, I'm going to try to be more consistent about my sparking. I read about the 5% Challenge and it got me really excited about finally edging my way into the wonderful community that I know exists here. Soon I'll have a whole team that I can't let down!

For anyone who doesn't know, people join the group (it starts soon!) at
individual.asp... Sat, 4 May 2013 16:20:04 EST Spartan Sprint 5K Mud Run - COMPLETE! So I did it! One more thing to knock off the bucket list for the year. I ran a 5K distance (4.34 miles, actually) without stopping in 40-ish minutes AND I not only completed a 5K race, but completed a Spartan Sprint!! Wooo!! I did the race with my boyfriend, Blake, and it really proved how we support each other and encourage each other to keep going even when it was rough.

It was one mess of a race and I can honestly say that I've never been dirtier in my entire like. There were up... Mon, 3 Dec 2012 15:40:51 EST Looking hard for that silver lining Hello Sparkpeople-land where I've been absent from for about 2 months now. I've still been tracking when I can but I've totally checked out socially. :(

The last month brought some huge changes for me that I'm still adjusting to, some good and some bad. I got to go home (Denver) for a week and spend time with my wonderful family and adorable niece. It was crazy to see my friends at home and how much they're changing. Some of them are already married with kids. That scares me! I'm n... Tue, 19 Jul 2011 13:21:00 EST 30 Day Photo Blog Challenge Day 18 Ok. with finals I haven't been on here every day, but I'm trying!

Day 18 - A picture of your biggest insecurity, and the reasons why it is the biggest

This one is so easy it's not even funny.

It's almost summer time and that means it's almost swimsuit time. I hate swimsuits. I hid in a one piece until people mercilessly teased me as a kid and then graduated to two pieces that had sp... Tue, 31 May 2011 16:33:07 EST 30 Day Photo Blog Challenge Day 17 - I'm trying this again! So my three year anniversary came around and I disappeared from Sparkpeople...We went to an amazing dinner at this awesome place here in Seattle called Art of the Table. Five different couples sat at one big table and we all feasted upon 5 small delicious courses of food, each paired with a different wine. The chef would ring a gong to signal the start of each course and then talk us through what he'd put together, why he'd put it together that way, and where he'd found the food. I figured th... Sat, 28 May 2011 17:53:07 EST 30 Day Photo Blog Challenge Day 16 I haven't gone to bed yet so it's still technically Wednesday!

Day 16 - A picture of someone who inspires you

So I stumbled across this video on the internet and wow...something about this guy's (whose name is Ben) story really just encouraged me to get my lazy butt of the couch and run even when I don't feel like doing it. It's not even 5 minutes long and it will leave you with a good feeling about yourself, at least it did for me.

Thu, 19 May 2011 04:04:14 EST 30 Day Photo Blog Challenge Day 15 Day 15 - A picture of something you want to do before you die

No. I don't want to see the world. There's actually a story behind this one. So in 2008, I spent 3 months living in Japan. I stayed with a host family, attempted to speak the language, and neglected most of my schoolwork to explore the amazing city of Kyoto. Unfortunately, since I was there with 20 or so of my schoolmates, I never really took ... Tue, 17 May 2011 14:09:52 EST 30 Day Photo Blog Challenge Day 14 Yes! Caught up to today! Will post tomorrow's tomorrow! :)

Day 14 – A picture of you now

Oh no she didn't! Oh yes I did post a self-shot bathroom pic for this one. I really wish I had taken a before picture of myself before I joined SP or right when I first started. I just crossed the 10 pounds lost finish line and I'm feeling awesome compared to when I started in mid-March. The lighting's me... Tue, 17 May 2011 01:13:11 EST 30 Day Photo Blog Challenge Day 13 Day 13 (5/15) - A picture of your favorite band or artist

This one is pretty easy. Green Day has been my favorite band since I was young. They were my first band to fall in love with after the boy band phase (woo BSB!) and are still one of my favorites. They have good angry music and good upbeat music and just good music in general.

-----
Day 01- A recent picture of yourself
Day 02... Tue, 17 May 2011 01:06:28 EST 30 Day Photo Blog Challenge Day 12 Day 12 (5/14) – A picture that defines you

Oooo...tricky. A picture that defines me...

I think I have to split this one up.

This image is an attempt to show my usual disposition. That doesn't mean I am never angry or sad, but I really really try to make an effort to always see the cup as half full (even when there's a slow leak in the bottom of it).

The other thing that defines me ... Tue, 17 May 2011 01:01:23 EST 30 Day Photo Blog Challenge Day 11 Gah! How did I let this get so far behind again. Boo! Ok marathon blog posts. Go!

Day 11 (5/13) - A picture of your IPOD or other music playing device on shuffle, and then list the first 10 songs that play.

Ok. Don't laugh. I know it's old. It was my present to myself before I started my freshman year of college. Usually I don't use an iPod (I also have a iPod touch 3rd gen) when I'm exercisi... Tue, 17 May 2011 00:42:14 EST 30 Photo Blog Challenge Day 10 Day 10! So excited! I'm going to get back on track to doing this every day. It's getting harder though with school winding down and final projects competing for my attention.

Day 10 - A picture of your closest friend

So I thought about this one long and hard. Since moving to Seattle in September, I haven't really established much of a friend base here. It's kind of sad, but I'm just not good at making friends and putting myself out there...

That's not to say I... Thu, 12 May 2011 15:44:06 EST 30 Photo Blog Challenge Day 9 Alright! Chugging right along this if the photo blog that I should have posted yesterday (5/11).

Day 09 – A picture that motivates you to do more

This picture is what started it all, folks. This is from a family vacation in August of 2009. My dad, mom, sister, niece and I spent a wonderful few days in Maryland around Assateague Island. I was and still am totally self-conscious about my body in... Thu, 12 May 2011 15:35:51 EST 30 Photo Blog Challenge Day 8 Ok. We're slightly behind here. This is for 5/10. Sheesh...gotta get back on the blogging wagon.

Day 08 - A picture of your favorite color

This image is perfect for showing my favorite color, BLUE!, along with bringing back a good memory of my first ever backpacking trip to Sykes Hot Springs, which is near Big Sur in California. I LOVE the ocean and all the beautiful shades of blue it has, but... Thu, 12 May 2011 15:24:43 EST 30 Photo Blog Challenge Day 7 Woo! One full week of photo blogging (even if yesterday's was a day late) completed!

Day 07 - A picture of your most treasured item

Sooo I don't want this to rub anyone the wrong way. It has nothing really to with religion and more to do with having a good luck charm of sorts. I won't make any claims about my religion or what other people should believe.

So my most treasured object is a medal that my mom gave me before I left home for college almost 6 years ag... Mon, 9 May 2011 16:03:10 EST Why cupcakes???/30 Photo Blog Challenge Day 6 This is a compound entry. So yesterday was Mother's Day. It wasn't really a good day for me because my mom is in Colorado and I'm in Seattle...too far away for a Mother's Day hug or much besides a phone call :(

I was down in the dumps, missing her and my family, who usually all convene at someone's house for delicious food and general family hanging out. Instead, I spent my Mother's Day with my boyfriend's mom. We took her out to lunch at this awesome Mexican restaurant and it was ... Mon, 9 May 2011 15:40:55 EST 30 Photo Blog Challenge Day 5 Day 05 - A picture of your favorite animal

So the first place my mind jumps to is pets for this one. Although I love my Shimmer (my current dog) I think that my first dog, Lady, will always hold a special place in my heart.

Lady was my 6th birthday present from my grandparents and parents in 1993. This picture was taken shortly before I had to make the hardest decision of my life to put her t... Sun, 8 May 2011 02:54:11 EST 30 Photo Blog Challenge Day 4 Day 04 - A picture of the cast of your favorite TV show

Ahhh! So hard to choose. There are a few shows, ongoing and past, that I have really loved like: Grey's Anatomy, Glee, Lost, The Amazing Race, NCIS, Criminal Minds...

My favorite used to be a tie between Grey's Anatomy and Glee, hands down, but their recent seasons have kinda gone a bit downhill. Don't get my started on the Grey's musical episode. 211

So I'm going to say that my favorite TV sh... Fri, 6 May 2011 14:32:09 EST 30 Photo Blog Challenge Day 3 Day 03 - A picture of your inspiration for weight loss

So I feel like my inspirations come from a bunch of different places, but I'm only including one for today. My inspiration for weight loss is one of my closest friends, Meera.

So the two of us met each other before college started at our orientation. We talked some over the summer and ended up in the same freshman dorm. Almost immediately we became close.

<img src=" Fri, 6 May 2011 02:53:42 EST 30 Photo Blog Challenge Day 2 Day 02 - A picture of you and the person you have been closest with the longest

Me and my mom at her birthday breakfast last year.

I guess I went for the obvious choice here, my mom! We talk to each other every day even though we are states apart and we just click when we're together, easily moving together and getting stuff done! I 26 my mom! Wed, 4 May 2011 19:23:46 EST Photo Blog - Day 1 I saw this on MICHELLENRGZED's (Thanks for the idea 30 ) blog and thought it was a fun idea and a good way to get into blogging on here regularly, so I'm going to try it out.

I'm going to try to blog here daily for at least 30 days, which is how long this project will be. Feel free to join me if you want to, the list of photos to post is right at the bottom of this.

Day 1 - A recent picture of yourself.

<img src=" Tue, 3 May 2011 17:08:29 EST So this blogging thing... Is something I've never done or really wanted to do, but I'm going to give it a go.

I'm really sick and tired of people asking me how my diet's going! No guys, I'm not dieting! I'm making a commitment to a lifestyle change to be a healthier person and if I shed a few pounds getting there I'm happy about it, but that is not the point! I swear I've been asked this like 5 times this week and when I explain myself it's like they don't really listen and I bet the next time I see them I'... Sun, 1 May 2011 15:16:01 EST
