However, I bought a nice asian salad mix that will last me most of the week..

Boy, it was hard to pass on the apple fritters, but, I figure even small changes are better than no changes. Sat, 4 Jan 2014 14:44:10 EST Starting again After a long lapse that involved poor eating habits and generally not taking care of myself. I have started back using my Wii Walk It out program that I love.

i have decided not to wait until the first of the year and started yesterday. Mon, 30 Dec 2013 07:37:15 EST Getting back into the Spark I have been barely using the Spark, but, I have decided that i need to buckle down and get serious again about taking care of myself.

This morning i rode my bike for 4 miles and am planning on working up to being able to get ito where I can ride with the local cycling group and maybe do a century next year.

I am also doing a lot of cleaning and moving things around in my studio to get organized,

The other day I replaced my Wii and I got the Walk It Out program... Fri, 9 Aug 2013 07:58:03 EST I Just Bought a New Friend Tomorrow will be 3 months since dh died and yesterday I bought a new friend, Her name is Lady and she is a 12 week old African grey Congo parrot. I went and met her yesterday and she is already trying to talk. She is a a hand fed baby from a very good local breeder. She will be brought to me in about 10 days after my new furniture is delivered and her cage is is ready.

I have always wanted to one of these wonderful birds and now I am getting one 30 They are consider... Fri, 31 May 2013 05:03:52 EST New non-food reward I have found a great non-food reward. This morning I finished cleaning the entire downstairs, the master bathroom and got my bed made. So I sat down at a jigsaw puzzle I started last night. My late hubby never liked jigsaw puzzles so we never did them. Now since it is just me I have a corner of the living set with with a table and good lighting and I take breaks and work on the puzzle for a bit. This "simple" one is going to take me awhile. Friday my son, his wife and 7 yr old grandso... Mon, 20 May 2013 08:54:22 EST The Day The Music Died - continued Thanks to all who responded to my last post.
Yesterday I did pack up all of the music items and put them away in a safe place in case I change my mind. It felt good to make more space for the things that are pertinent to my new life.

I have very good memories of all the years that we made music together and will cherish them. But, with my hands getting very painful due to the osteoarthritis. I think this may be a case of where God is closing a window and maybe opening a doo... Wed, 15 May 2013 07:50:25 EST The Day The Music Died I am coming to the conclusion that the day my husband died, the music also died. He was a brilliant musician who could pick up almost any instrument and play it with little effort. For while I loved playing, but it was a struggle and a labor of love.

Now, I find that I have no desire to play anymore. Also there is the factor that my hands have been deteriorating due to osteoarthritis playing is very difficult and at times impossible..

I think that it is time for ... Tue, 14 May 2013 08:50:23 EST Things are getting better Today this morning I rode my bike out to where I had scattered my hubby's ashes. It is only about a 4 mile round trip, but it was a great way to start my morning off. I am going to spend the rest of the day keeping busy running errands.

After that is done I will go to the weaving store to get some supplies I need.

I am getting my life back on track and back together. Mon, 13 May 2013 08:04:28 EST My journey Since March 1 when my hubby of 33 years died unexpectedly I have been forced on a journey I never wanted to take.

I have found that I am a lot more resilient, capable and stronger than I ever thought I could be. I am learning to cope with the silence that comes from living alone.

Tomorrow I will scatter his ashes in a lovey little secluded spot. It is a small pond with benches around it. It is only 5 minutes away so I can go visit him whenever I want to.. I think thi... Fri, 3 May 2013 08:22:23 EST Getting on with my life Friday was 2 months since my hubby died and I am settling into my new life as a single over 60 woman.

I am settling into my new home and making friends. I am getting into a regular exercise program. I have redeveloped a passion for gardening. I am raising orchids on my screened porch. I often take my meals out there and just watch the the birds and plants that are in my back yard.

It is hard to re-build my life but, I am getting on bit by bit. Sun, 28 Apr 2013 19:03:48 EST Hanging in there Well, it has been just over 3 weeks since dh died and I am still coping I have a relocation set up and it can't happen soon enough,

I am just taking it one day at a time with a lot of prayer mixed in with the nightly tears.

Thankfully I have a lot of packing to do so I am keeping busy. More importantly Chica the dog needs me. She still has to be walked and fed. So I have to function at least for her. She is also grieving and doesn't understand why he is gone.
I... Sat, 23 Mar 2013 05:30:24 EST One week at a time Now that I am recovering from my surgery I have decided that hubby and I will make one healthy change a week. Yesterday while coming home on a trip to NC, where we plan to retire. I convinced hubby that going vegetarian 75%of the the time was a good idea. when we stopped to eat at Subway we chose heart friendly sandwiches.
for breakfast we had vegetarian "sausage" biscuits. Since I still am in a splint for my hand I will not be cooking until after 3/5 but we will be working on get... Mon, 18 Feb 2013 06:51:33 EST I will be out of touch for awhile I haven't been very active on Spark for a bit due to hand problems preventing me to do much in typing. Tomorrow I will have surgery to correct it, but, will only be typing with my left hand while the right hand recovers.

in the last few weeks though dh and I bought new bikes and an indoor exercise cycle. We also bought a pair of Striiv pedometers. So we are still making progress.

I will post when I can
Thu, 24 Jan 2013 09:11:30 EST 2013 is off to a good start i indulged a bit on New year's Eve, but earlier in the day I got about 90 minutes of exercise in.

Also I saw my doctor for my annual physical and she was very pleased with everything across the board. It was keep up the good work and come back in 4 months. Apparently for some one who turns 61 in April I am in great shape.

My goal now is to get in better shape by the next appointment- 8 days before my birthday.

I am also planning on make a plan on how I will ... Wed, 2 Jan 2013 10:32:28 EST No New Year's Resultions for me I gave up making New Year's resolutions a few years back. It seemed they lasted about a few weeks at the max. Instead I pick something that I want to learn by this time next year. I found that I tend to accomplish my goals this way.

One year I decided that I would learn to make sushi and on 12/31 of that year I took some homemade sushi to the neighborhood party. Now, granted this was NOT restaurant quality sushi and to play it safe I used things like fake crab legs, canned oyst... Mon, 31 Dec 2012 06:09:56 EST Early Holiday Treat Today my hubby and I drove over to Norfolk VA to the Chrysler Museum to see an exhibit of Louis Comfort Tiffany vases and lamps. Talk about eye candy, it was incredible. This was food for the artistic soul. Everywhere we looked we saw something more outstandingly beautiful. We just wander around in awe. We also saw contemporary glass art. After the first of the year we are buying a family membership.

This treat was also great in the sense that we walked and burnt calories off... Sat, 22 Dec 2012 15:03:40 EST Trying to stay in shape despite my medications My md changed my diabetic meds and for the last 10 days I have been almost non-functional. I finally quit yesterday without the md's knowledge. I tried to reach him, but, he was out of the office.

This morning most of the nasty side effects had cleared up, so I was able to start working out again. What is discouraging is that fter the holidays are over with I have to have more hand surgery. Which means more time off from working out.

Ah well, I am just going to wor... Wed, 19 Dec 2012 08:34:41 EST Reward Time Today Lately I have been doing a lot of work swapping rooms. And in turn burning calories, so this morning when the stores open I am going to give myself a non- food reward. I am getting a paraffin hand spa. I suffer from osteoarthritis in both hands and most likely am looking a have a few more knuckles surgically fused after the the holidays. Meantime the warm wax bath will help and from what I understand it will also help with the poor circulation in my hands. I am already having a lot of p... Sat, 1 Dec 2012 06:32:38 EST Changing your personal enviroment for your mental health. I haven't blogged lately because I have been super busy with swapping the contents of two bedroom. One was the master bedroom and the other my weaving studio. Talk about a serious workout. It is so worth it! Our bedroom is now in the smaller bedroom, but it is now so serene and minimalist. Just our bed, 2 night stands. On the wall opposite the bed is a small shelf to hold the bed linens out of sight but convenient . On top of the shelf is a medium sized lamp and a lovely philodendron an... Fri, 30 Nov 2012 06:01:44 EST Getting My Kitchen Organized This morning I went and got a label maker and today I will be labeling EVERY shelf and cabinet, and drawer in my kitchen. Hubby has Add and claims he never knows where to put things away. I have also drawn diagrams and taped them inside the doors. I am tired of my kitchen being a disaster.
Fri, 23 Nov 2012 07:39:21 EST Switching my workouts For the last 2 months or so I have been really just doing the Wii Walk it Out. On Sat, I have started doing Wii Fit Plus and I am going to try and do the 2 switching days. On the Wii Fit Plus I am doing yoga and strength training. The WIO is just cardio. I am hoping that this change of workouts might help Mon, 5 Nov 2012 06:47:35 EST Feeling Very Blessed As I sit in my warm and cozy living room with electricity watching the devastation of the NorthEast on the tv , I feel so blessed. Other than a lot of rain and wind Sandy did not affect me. Parts of where I live in Tidewater VA did suffer property damage, but, in my apartment complex we just had some good sized puddles. i never lost power and was safe and sound and very comfortable the entire time.

With all that has happened due to Sandy I know that my guardian angels were near... Tue, 30 Oct 2012 07:22:28 EST Sparking through rough times I haven't posted for awhile since I was having a rough time with my diabetes. The meds gave me a nasty reaction and then when I quit the medication per my doctor's orders my blood sugar went crazy. But I forced myself to keep Sparking even if only a minimal amount. A lot of days I didn't feel like it. But I tried to at least log in if nothing else and do a bit of exercise.

I think that maybe be part of what helped me to finally turn the corner. I am back to doing my Wii Walk i... Sat, 6 Oct 2012 09:08:19 EST My Personal Mantra- I Touched the Snake In the last few weeks I posted about conquering my biggest phobia and how it has helped me to take it into other parts of my life. I find I am still using it when faced with something I fear. I keep repeating to myself- "I touched the snake" This morning I had to give myself an injection that I had trouble with last week. Since I expect to be on this medication for quite a long time I know I have to deal with it. This morning I was able to do the injection with very little trouble and it ... Mon, 27 Aug 2012 11:36:57 EST Now I know Why I Touched the Snake Last week I made a blog post about confronting my biggest phobia- snakes. I wrote about how I actually came face to face with a python type of snake. Granted it was in a pet store , in a very controlled situation and it was only a young medium sized snake, but it still was a snake . Afterwards I wondered why I felt the need to touch the snake. I am a city dweller and it is very doubtful I will ever confront a snake outside of a pet store, but, still I did it.

This morning I fou... Mon, 20 Aug 2012 05:39:38 EST Confronting one of my biggest phobias Today I dealt head on with one of if not my biggest phobias. While in Pet Smart to pick up canary food for our newest family member They had a reptile rescue and a young lady had a boa constrictor wrapped around her wrist like a braided bracelet and I actually touched it a couple of times. My hubby did not believe I actually did it. I did tell him he should have gotten a picture of my touching it because I most likely will never do it again. I do not know why I feel the need to confront ... Sat, 11 Aug 2012 19:10:40 EST Changing things around For the last few weeks all I have been doing is the Wii Walk It Out. However this morning I took the bike out and rode 2 miles. If it gets cool in the evening I will try and do some more riding. I think my ankle is appreciating the change in routine. Sat, 4 Aug 2012 08:06:39 EST Overdoing the workouts Because my diabetes is out of control due to my medications are not working and at times the Insulin Monster is really out of control at times. I have been trying to keep things under control with exercise and right now it is not working very well. It got to the point I was doing 7 miles a day on the Wii Walk It Out. At 60 and having had my right ankle re-built about 2 years ago it is just too much. Now I am only doing about 2 miles a day in one hour sessions.

I am realizing th... Thu, 2 Aug 2012 11:14:54 EST Two Walk It Out sessions a day Recently I started breaking my workout sessions into one in the morning and one in the afternoon. I am still getting an average of 5 miles a day or more walking, but it is MUCH easier to do it this way rather than one long session. When I was doing one long session towards the end I would be muttering-"I hate this, I hate this" But I felt that I had to keep at it. Now I just have to do 2 to 3 miles each sessions and I don't get fed up with it.

With the weather as hot and humid... Mon, 23 Jul 2012 15:47:08 EST Breaking up my workouts Yesterday I didn't have a 2hr block of time to work out, but I was able to get the two hours in using half hour blocks over the course of the day. I am hoping that this will have the same benefits as the longer workouts. I figure it was better than not working out at all.

Tomorrow have to drive up to my mil's for a family reunion. With the round trip drive this means no working out at all. Monday I will get back to the plan. Sat, 21 Jul 2012 09:09:13 EST Easy Workout Today After a nasty reaction to a diabetic medication yesterday I was able to get back to my workout this morning. I did a shortened workout on the Wii Walk It Out of only 1.7 miles, normally I try and do 3 miles twice a day if I can manage it. However I think it is better to go easy for a day or so. Tue, 17 Jul 2012 08:25:45 EST New Toy The other day when we were over on the Outer Banks NC for a day's outing I found a new toy that I had seen advertised on tv. YONANNAS. It makes frozen fruit yogurt desserts without dairy products. Hubby, we found out this past year is lactose intolerant. He hated giving up yogurt which we used a dessert. This has enabled us to still have a frozen dessert at night, but one he can have. I am not connected in any way or fashion to the company that makes it but am a very happy camper.
... Sun, 15 Jul 2012 06:40:25 EST The differece a good night's sleep makes I am amazed at how good on feel from getting a good night's sleep last night. We got our new bed delivered yesterday. Our old mattress was in bad shape, I just didn't realize how bad it was.

Another benefit is how much bigger the room looks with the queen sized bed instead of the CA king. Now, I have to get the clutter out of the room. That is my project for today. My plan is to turn our bedroom into a Zen like sanctuary.

Recently I started on spiritual journey towa... Thu, 12 Jul 2012 06:29:07 EST Still working out I have managed to do 3.5 miles on the Wii Walk It Out this morning and am hoping to get another 2 miles in this afternoon. It is helping with my snack attacks. I think we are going to get rid of our exercise bike. We are still trying to downsize and I don't like it in the living room.

As part of our downsizing we are replacing our California King sized bed with a queen. I am finding that the more clutter I get rid of the less stress I have. It is also making it easier to deal ... Wed, 11 Jul 2012 09:31:41 EST I Did Good This Morning at WalMart This morning we ran up to WalMart and I was able to walk by my nemesis- the bakery section and passed on my biggest downfall- apple fritters! I went straight to the fish section and bought the fake crab legs I like for lunch for the next few days as I planned and then got out of the food section and went and got the other stuff I came in for. It felt SO good to be able to walk by the apple fritters and not feel bad about not getting any. They tend to really play havoc with my blood sugar. ... Tue, 10 Jul 2012 10:44:41 EST I Did Good This Morning at WalMart This morning we ran up to WalMart and I was able to walk by my nemesis- the bakery section and passed on my biggest downfall- apple fritters! Tue, 10 Jul 2012 10:44:41 EST Still walking Today I did 4.5 miles on the Wii Walk It out. It was a bit of a challenge, but in a good way. I want to start doing 5 miles a day 4 times a week.

Today we ordered a new bed. We have a 12 year old adjustable bed that has been giving up a lot of grief. It needs repairs and that is going to be expensive. I think some of our sleep problems go back to this bed and mattress being old. I am hoping next week when it gets delivered on Sat. that we will get a good nights sleep. Sat, 7 Jul 2012 17:40:03 EST The IM Seems To Be In Hiding Well, things seem to be going well. The dreaded IM seems to have gone into hiding. Between doing my exercise and watching what I eat my blood sugars are getting back under control. I have more energy and I am feeling a lot better. And no sign of the IM

This morning I felt so good I went and got a short perky pixie haircut. The hairdresser cut enough hair off for a another whole person :-)) I am also giving up on constant hair coloring. It is too much maintenance and at 60 I li... Fri, 6 Jul 2012 13:05:07 EST It is getting to be a habit I am back into the Spark and am getting to the point where the working out is getting to be a habit again. This helps to keep the IM in its place and my diabetes under control.

Happy 4th .to one and all.

283 232 283 Wed, 4 Jul 2012 10:45:58 EST Yesterday the IM got loose gorged out on cookies and anything else it could find Yesterday the IM got out of control. I hadn't slept well the night before and then when I tried to workout the silly dog kept telling me she had to go out and since I didn't feel like cleaning up after her I believed her. I would stop working out on the Wii put some clothes on, the way I sweat I do the workout topless . Anyway she just wanted to roll around in the grass and enjoy the sun and warmth. We keep telling the vet that she is part cat.

As a result of things like that ... Tue, 3 Jul 2012 16:33:03 EST Non-food reward Today since I have been good about working out this week After I did my Wii Walk It Out in the morning we went to a small local zoo.

I managed to do 6 miles on the Wii and then we did a short walk in the zoo before it got too hot to be outside. However the zoo has a nice selection of indoor exhibits to enjoy.

I am going to look for more non-food rewards and post the list in the kitchen where I can see the list and go for that instead of food. Sun, 1 Jul 2012 14:25:08 EST Insulin Monster is Getting Controlled For the last few days the IM is getting under control. I am no longer having periods where I am prowling around looking for carbs and chocolate. I have had to go back to taking two types of insulin daily. But, also the fact I am doing 90 minutes almost everyday on the Wii Walk It Out is a major help.
While working out I am drinking a lot more fluids (ice tea). I can't say I am thrilled about doing the work-outs but, I know if I don't my diabetes will be out of control and the compl... Fri, 29 Jun 2012 12:11:49 EST Thanks for all the support I just want to thank everyone for yesterday's support and advice as to how to cope with that nasty gastro bug I had.
I spent most of the day in bed sleeping. When I was awake I would read for a bit and then go back to sleep. My chihuahua stayed huddled next to me. That is her version of support :-))).
I am feeling a whole lot better this morning but, am going to take it easy just to make sure I am over it completely. Tomorrow I will start working out again.
One nice thing... Wed, 27 Jun 2012 06:59:54 EST Day off thanks to a bug Today is going to be a total waste. According to hubby's gastro doctor there is a nasty gi bug going around and apparently I have gotten a bad case of it. His advice is to just sip ginger ale and lay low until it passes. After being sick all night and not being able to keep anything down this morning I am in no mood to argue with him. I had hoped to do my work-out today but I think I am going to follow the doctor's advice. Tue, 26 Jun 2012 10:13:11 EST So far the IM in under control The week is off to a good start. I had a balanced breakfast and then did 90 minutes of the Wii Walk It O, making sure I was drinking constantly so as to prevent dehydration. After I finished I had a nice big juicy orange as a snack.

I think one of the IM's best friends is my diet soda. I am a soda junkie and I am trying to give up this habit. I am not fond of water, but am switching over to sugar free ice tea.

I have a sensible lunch and dinner planned along with a ... Mon, 25 Jun 2012 10:07:31 EST Did battle with the IM again today This afternoon I did another 20 minute workout on the Wii Walk it Out. I figured it would help keep the IM away, but when I started shaking I felt I had better quit. Being diabetic I don't want to go into shock for my blood sugar getting too low. In a few minutes I am going to go have a healthy snack- an orange which should stabilize my blood sugar.

I also spoke with hubby about this morning's apple fritter binge. He has agreed to talk me out of them in the future and he will n... Fri, 22 Jun 2012 14:35:56 EST The IM got the better of me today This morning I made the mistake of going to WalMart before breakfast (BIG MISTAKE) and the insulin monster grabbed 4 apple fritters in the bakery dept. Of course that turned into my breakfast. 1200 calories right there. That is almost 3/4 of my daily allotment.

I was able to get cottage cheese and fake crab legs for lunch and dinner to compensate for the IM's bad choice.

I also fought the IM after hubby left for work and did 80 minutes of the Wii Walk It Out for a tot... Fri, 22 Jun 2012 11:01:05 EST timing about exercise This morning by 9 a.m. I had done 30 minutes on the exercise bike. I am hoping that I can get another 30 minutes in later today. One thing that is helping is the exercise bike is in the living room right in front of the tv. It does seem that by working out in the morning I can stay on track.

With the heat and humidity I will be exercising indoors for awhile. I am planning on working out on Friday. Sat. we will be going to some museums in Washington DC and since we are taking th... Thu, 21 Jun 2012 09:18:01 EST Timing seems to be important I have noticed that if I do not exercise by about 10 am I seem to lose momentum and don't get to it. So it looks like I will have to get off my backside in the morning from now on and exercise whether or not I feel like it.

This morning while doing the Wii Walk It Out, I kept mumbling to myself- I don't want to do it, I don't even like it anymore ( When I was doing it regularly I enjoyed it). But I also kept trying to tell myself that exercise is one of the best things I can do t... Wed, 20 Jun 2012 10:43:26 EST Making out a plan to fight the IM (Insulin Monster) This morning I planned out my food tracker in advance. I am hoping that by planning it out in advance I can stay on track and will know what to do when the IM attacks.

By exercising yesterday evening my blood sugar had dropped when I checked it this morning. It is still about 70 points too high, but, at least it is heading in the right direction.

I have already got half of my water requirement consumed. The new rule is I have to get my 8 glasses of water down BEFORE I... Sun, 17 Jun 2012 08:58:36 EST
