SHARKAR02's SparkPeople Blog SHARKAR02's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Cupid 5K We've got a 5K this coming Saturaday (Feb 11th) and my 10 year old son is taking part in it with me! I believe I'm more looking forward to it because he's going to be with me than the 5K itself. I told him he didn't have to hang back with me and could go for it to do the best he can. He's a fast monkey and I'm hoping he places well. No matter the outcome, he's planning for this just to be the start of us doing these together. So if I didn't have motivation before to get back on track exe... Sun, 5 Feb 2012 22:35:34 EST Blog #1 of 7 in a Row As part of this week's challenge - Blogging 7 days straight. So today addresses my first high stress reaction. In my previous blog I mentioned we're getting ready to to deal with major health issues with my husband. Well, we met with the oncologist yesterday and we start the chemo a week from Monday and radiation the same day for the next 7 weeks 5 days a week. I say "We" because although I realize it's his body that's going to have to endure the treatment, it also affects us as a couple.... Sat, 14 Jan 2012 12:13:03 EST New Year With Lots of Challenges & Opportunities Ahead WOW, it's been a year since I last posted a blog. I've visited and left messages here and there on other Sparksters' pages, but no blogs. Well, I know from experience, blogging does help me stay not only accountable but also sane at times.

This year is the year I will reinforce my lifestyle changes into permanent changes. This translates into not letting life give me an excuse to go to food for comfort and chucking exercise.

This year my husband and I will be dealing ... Sun, 1 Jan 2012 16:55:32 EST Got To Take My Own Advice Just posted to another Sparkster's blog, and I thought, hey lady you need to make sure you take your own advice. It is so easy to get overwhelmed when we have so many things to work on to make for a healthier lifestyle. So, stressing out over it is sorta' counter-productive don't you think? That being said, I promise to take my own advice as follows:

1. I will not think everything has to be accomplished all at once.

2. I don't have to be 100% on target, just consist... Sun, 2 Jan 2011 17:53:20 EST Different Outlook This New Year Than Last's Last year at this time, I was miserable both emotionally and physically. Had just lost my job due to plant closing (first time unemployed in more than 30 years) and my health and self-esteem was not the best in the world. Fast forward to today. Recently employed, and a bonus it's close to home. As for my health and self-esteem, I've lost 50 lbs +/- and off my blood pressure and cholesterol medication.

Although, I've not kept up my healthier lifestyle practices in place the last... Sat, 1 Jan 2011 20:12:57 EST WHAT WE'RE ABLE TO DO NOW! I've been reading a number of blogs this morning and I'm amazed at what the accomplishments of my fellow Sparksters (and myself in some instances) have enabled us to do. While any amount of weight is a challenge to lose, when you have the large amounts many of us do, the loss many times enables us to do things we've never experienced before in our adult lives (sometimes not even as a child or teen).

Enjoying an amusement park - I can now walk without pain or getting winded after j... Wed, 28 Jul 2010 12:54:00 EST Memory Affected By Weight hmmmmm The following is a link to an article today concerning how weight appears to affect women's memory. Interesting reading!

hsn/excessweightinolderwomenlinkedtodi
minishedmemory Thu, 15 Jul 2010 23:09:08 EST It's OK to Acknowledge Your Accomplishments I don't know about you, but for most of my life I was happy not to be noticed. I guess it came from the taunting because of my size from grade school on ..... Other than recognition for my achievement in my studies, I was happy being in the background. Even so, when I did receive a compliment, I'd discount it saying it wasn't any big deal. I guess I didn't think I was worthy of it.

However, I noticed the other day, my reaction is changing. First, I'm getting compliments on not... Fri, 9 Jul 2010 17:21:55 EST A Wide Smile From the Doctor and More Had my annual physical today and the doctor was almost as elated as I am with the changes. She wanted to know what I'd been doing and I touted the great resources and tools (and friends) of Sparkpeople!

Since my last visit I had lost 51 lbs. My blood pressure was was 102//72, which I've never experienced at the doctor's office before. While my cholesterol is still a little high, she said she wasn't going to have me on medication and we'd recheck in six months. She believes wi... Thu, 8 Jul 2010 18:23:44 EST I Still Can't Believe I'm Able to run further than 10 or 12 feet without having to stop. I started and completed the C25K program before the bad heat and humidity hit....and stayed. So my running continuously has been for shorter periods of time lately. Given that, I've been going to the track and walking a lap, running a lap, and repeat. That's cool, but tonight I started walking the "curves" and running the length of the football field on both sides. During one of these times, I was overcome with my ability to run t... Thu, 1 Jul 2010 23:33:41 EST IT IS WORK, BUT WELL WORTH IT When I read the "Reflections" email this morning it really hit home. When we set up our goals here on SP, did we really think about what it would take to achieve them? Sure we knew we wanted to lose "X" number of pounds, but what was it going to take to get there? Hard work, that's what!

In order to get to that goal, we have to be willing to put forth the effort to make it. Is it going to be easy, no and some days will be harder than others. But we have to work at it. We ha... Fri, 25 Jun 2010 23:40:24 EST Great Birthday! Celebrated 50th today. Husband was great. He knew I didn't want a cake, so he got a small veggie tray with my favorites - pea pods, cherry tomatoes and baby carrots and a fruit tray. For gifts he got me a workout shirt, the Valerie Bertinelli workout DVD and a workout mat. I believe I'll keep him around for a while.

It's funny, I'm 50 and I'm healthier than I was at 20. I'm taking this as a good sign that this year and future years are going to be better in all ways than the o... Thu, 17 Jun 2010 23:18:55 EST 10 Mile Walk Today was our day for the Go10Walk (fundraiser for missions). There were three legs each 10 miles long with 4-5 participants walking each leg. My husband and I along with two other of our church walked the first leg. We got up bright and early at 5 a.m. to get ready and be at the appointed "get-together" site by 6:30. As always, there were delays, the major being a truck overturned a mile just before our starting point. Thankfully, the driver was fine and we got to our starting pointing ... Wed, 16 Jun 2010 18:42:26 EST Fifty Pounds Off and Gone As of this past Saturday, officially, 50 lbs are gone. So I had hubby take a pic so I could compare to my before pic. So.........

This is me at my starting weight of 275

And this is me at current weight of 224.7 --- 50 lbs less.

When I started this endeavor, I knew I wanted it to work this time, bu... Mon, 14 Jun 2010 23:18:02 EST FIRST BLOG FOR JUNE Boy, have I been slacking. I'm usually a very upbeat person and when I blog I try to be as positive as possible. Well..... needless to say, I've been in a funk most of this month and have stayed hidden from the blogging world. I have found this is NOT a good thing. When I don't blog, I keep things to myself rather than putting them out there, seeing them for what they are and moving on with life. So, from here on out, good or bad, I have to blog at least 3 or 4 days each week.
<B... Fri, 11 Jun 2010 17:57:47 EST Time to Get This Horse Back In Gear Well I slacked off on my workouts during May and it showed. So, it's time to get this horse back into training. I printed off the 30 Day Activity calendar and am going to add each day's activity to my regular routine for an extra boost and a change of pace. If the day's activity is not available to me, I'll improvise with one of the other day's.

Another goal for this month is that at least 30 minutes/5-6 days per week of cardio will be either running, walking, or cycling. On ... Tue, 1 Jun 2010 00:21:33 EST House For Sale Well, we decided to do it. We're going to put our home up for sale. It's way larger than we need now and we could do with a lot lower payment. So now the fun starts with deep cleaning and then keeping it ready for showing at a moment's notice. Hopefully, although the housing market is still not rebounded completely, it's in a great location so we're hoping it will sell within a decent amount of time. Say a prayer for us! Tue, 25 May 2010 00:32:58 EST More Changes Since being out of work since December, I've had few occasions to wear dress pants (wear dresses for church normally). The last time was around the first of March. Well, last week I needed to wear dress pants to a meeting. I go to the closet and pull out my favorite pair and I kid you not, they fell straight to the floor they were so big. So I pull out another pair and then a third pair, all the same result. Finally I find a pair that will stay up, but still noticeably larger than what I... Sun, 23 May 2010 23:28:30 EST Straighten Back Up This has been a rough week. Exercise was on the lame most of the week. I did track and stay in my calorie range, but...

I have really been doing well with keeping from the emotional eating, but this week I did catch myself resorting to it. I saw it for what it was and stopped before it got out of hand, but it really bothered me that it happened in the first place. After, being frustrated for a while and fussing at myself, I realized there was a good thing from it. I stopped. ... Sat, 22 May 2010 22:38:44 EST Time to Concentrate on Me I've read several blogs today about struggles various SP friends have or are going through. Some I could so relate to such as job loss (first time unemployed since started working more than 30 years ago), family crisis, money crunch, etc.

However, I've taken this time to really concentrate on me. In between job searches and interviews, I've been able to devote a lot of time to setting a really good foundation for these lifestyle changes.

Because of this I've lost jus... Fri, 14 May 2010 23:16:55 EST WHAT! NOT ON A DIET This is the reaction my husband says he gets from most of the people that have asked him what kind of diet I'm using to lose weight. It's funny how it seems some people are afraid to ask me about my weight loss, but they feel more comfortable asking him. Anyways, he tells them I'm not on a diet, I eat what I want but in moderation. He also tells them I'm tracking my food on SP and exercising regularly.

I've decided that one thing I want to get across to friends and family memb... Tue, 11 May 2010 22:05:48 EST FIRST 5K I did it. I ran my first 5K today. Actually had to walk the hills but pretty much ran the rest.

After sweltering heat in the mid 80's the last few days, I woke to low 50's this morning. Thank you Lord! My husband went with me as support. It's a good thing, because I was rather nervous. My stomach was queasy and I thought oh great I'm going to throw up, but calmed down once we got there.

There were people of all ages from 8 to somewhere in the 70's. We went to the... Sat, 8 May 2010 22:46:02 EST 4 Month Update Today is the four month mark since I started my healthier lifestyle. So first the numbers:

Down 42.6 lbs
Waist down 4 inches
Hips down 5.25 inches
Blood Pressure is wonderful average 111/66

Non-numbers:

Energy level is great
Have almost finished the C25K program - my first 5K is tomorrow!
Clothes fit better - into a size 18 in most clothes
I FEEL GOOD

Rewards:

Running capri & top
New Asics Gel running ... Fri, 7 May 2010 10:29:12 EST A Trouble Goal In my Stage 3 of Action Steps today, blogging about a "trouble goal" was advised. I had no trouble coming up with what mine is. I don't have trouble getting my water in, I love veggies and fruit so that's not a problem, getting my exercise in is pretty good, but getting up in the mornings is a problem.

I know how it started. The company I worked for sold and my job ended the last of December this past year. Since I turned eighteen, I have always worked. While attending college... Thu, 6 May 2010 12:29:41 EST MAY'S GOALS Decided to set my goals for May in writing. More committing than just saying what I want to see happen this month!

Lose 10 lbs
Lose 2 inches off waist
Lose 2 inches off hips

Continue my C25K program and still run at least 30 minutes 3-4 times a week after program completion

Run a 5K (signed up for Sat, May 8th)

Ride exercise bike at least 20-30 minutes 5-6 days a week

Walk outdoors 2-3 days a week

Strength training ... Sun, 2 May 2010 21:47:32 EST RECAP OF SPRING 5% CHALLENGE The numbers:

Down 15.3 lbs = 6.15%
Down 2 inches on waist
Down 2 inches on hips

Non-numbers:

Met some wonderful people. When reading the postings of my fellow Lady Bugs, I laughed, I cried, and I related with so many. We accomplished so much together and was there for each other to offer encouragement or to offer a hiney kick if needed. I wish continued success to all and hope many of us will be together on more challenges. Sun, 2 May 2010 00:12:54 EST Sharing My oldest son called last night with info on his recent blood work. His vitamin D is in the sinkhole like mine and his younger sister's. So, like us, he's on a regiment of Vitamin D for three months and then retake. More concerning was the fact the doctor id him as being pre-diabetic. His dad's side of the family has numerous members with diabetes and my dad had it.

When he told me about this, I took the opportunity to tell him about SP. I told him about all the great tracke... Thu, 22 Apr 2010 22:34:31 EST BUSY LAST FEW DAYS Not blogged for a few days and thought I better stop by and say hi and I'm still among the living. Spent Friday morning with my oldest daughter at the hospital. She had carpal tunnel surgery. All went well, talked to her today - has pain but is handling it.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday and even better new week. Sun, 18 Apr 2010 00:05:53 EST A WOOHOO DAY is what I had today. I decided this morning instead of repeating Week 4, I'd proceed on to W5D1. I DID IT! Totally great!!

Then since that evidently wasn't enough, hubby and I worked out in the flower bed weeding ALL afternoon. Whew, what a workout! Since eating healthier and being more active, my stamina is miles above what it's ever been. I like being able to work outside with hubby for extended amounts of time and not tiring out within 15 minutes. Good encouragement to ... Tue, 13 Apr 2010 22:13:58 EST Unusual For Me I had a hard time getting to my minimum calories today. Usually not a problem for me, but today it took very little to fill my hunger. Had a good balance in my Carbs/Protien/Fat, but a little short on the calorie side. I'm sure this is just a temporary thing. 20 Have a great Tuesday, tomorrow everybody! Mon, 12 Apr 2010 23:53:56 EST Good Sunday We had wonderful church services today. Amazing, how God knows when you need that special song or message. I'm being sarcastic because God always knows, but I'm so thankful he does.

I'm ready for a new week and new opportunities. There's a job listing I hadn't pursued because I was waiting on word from the one I got the rejection letter from yesterday. So now, I'm going to check it out tomorrow. I know God's got it all together, but I, being the wonderful human I am (more sa... Sun, 11 Apr 2010 23:26:14 EST Day is Done OK, I try to make my blogs upbeat so I'll talk my negative first and end on a positive note.

W4D3 didn't go well today. It was really hard and I did more walking than running. I don't know if it was the heat, the pollen or what. Anyway, I'm gong to repeat Week 4 next week to make sure I build up my stamina. And I'm not going to beat myself up because I did really well Day 1&2. I CAN DO IT!

I got a rejection letter in the mail for a job I interviewed for a few weeks ... Sat, 10 Apr 2010 22:21:19 EST A New Decade I entered a new decade today. I entered into the 230's today.

I've always been heavy except for about three years when I was a teen and maybe about three years in my twenties. I've been well over 200 lbs the rest of the time (mainly 260-280) reaching my highest weight of 318 in 2006.

When I decided it was time to get serious about my health on January 9th of this year I was at 275 lbs. I'd gotten down to just over 260 lbs when I came back to SP on the 29th of that... Fri, 9 Apr 2010 22:54:24 EST Getting Healthy Feels Good Last week and this week have really shown me what a change I'm already experiencing from the changes I've made since January. It hasn't all come easily, but it has been well worth it.

Changes:

Went from not being able to climb a flight of stairs without getting winded to this week completing the Week 4 C25K intervals of two 3 and two 5 minute runs

Went from not being able to do yard work for more than 15 or 20 minutes without getting winded or extremely fatig... Thu, 8 Apr 2010 17:43:45 EST Hump Day This has been a really good week thus far. I hope everyone else is having the same. I don't really have anything to share today other than I'm thankful for this site and the friends made here. God bless all of you! Wed, 7 Apr 2010 23:10:32 EST A FANTASTIC DAY God is so good. I had a great day today.

I made it through my W4D1 for the C25K. Did two 3 minute and two 5 minute run/jog intervals. I felt great when I got finished, sweating like a pig, but felt great.

Then this late afternoon my husband said he wanted to walk the route I'd mapped out by the house. He stopped smoking on April 1 and wants to start walking every day. So out we went for our walk. Averaged a little less than 19 minute mile. He had warned me befor... Tue, 6 Apr 2010 22:35:24 EST FORGET ABOUT WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN AND MOVE ON Are any of the rest of you like me? You start dwelling on "what ifs" and get yourself in a funk. I found myself doing this quite often the last couple of weeks. Thankfully though, I did some praying and looked at positives and I'm focusing more on the here and now.

When we start on the "what if" trail, it can make us miss what's going on right now. We get so focused on what we did or didn't do in the past, we lose out on the blessings we have right in front of us.

... Mon, 5 Apr 2010 23:58:02 EST Did Pretty Good We had Easter breakfast at church this morning and then a family lunch. Total calories for the day just slightly over, but the breakdown of Carbs/Protein/Fat were out of whack. And energy level has been zapped today. Could have something to do with getting up at 5 a.m., but I think it had more to do with my food. Just re-emphasized to myself that my food choices do have a lot to do with my energy level.

Anyway, I enjoyed the fellowship and visiting and it has encouraged me to s... Sun, 4 Apr 2010 21:33:38 EST Ahhhhh Well, got through today with shopping, going to birthday party, and readying food for tomorrow's Easter breakfast at church. Need to practice my song for tomorrow one more time and then off to bed.

Aside from daily life, I did get in my W3D3 of the C25K. Hey, weight a minute this is part of my healthy lifestyle so it is part of my daily life!!! Any way, I think I'm going to go ahead and go to Week 4 next week. I repeated both Week 1 and 2, but I'm recovering pretty quickly and ... Sun, 4 Apr 2010 00:36:55 EST Getting Ready for a Full Weekend Busy weekend coming up, but really looking forward to it.

Saturday - Grandson's birthday party

Sunday - Sunrise service followed by breakfast at the church followed by regular services in which I'll be doing a solo followed by egg hunt followed by family pictures.

Whew, that made me tired just typing it. However, I have planned. The birthday party's not an issue because I'm not that big on cake and ice cream. For the Sunday breakfast, I found a couple of yu... Fri, 2 Apr 2010 23:21:23 EST Beautiful Day Have been able to enjoy the beautiful day outside today. Got my workout done outside and then worked on the yard with hubby. All in all a great day was had. Now going to have a good supper and relax for while. Thu, 1 Apr 2010 20:16:20 EST A New Month - Continuing A New Me Ahh, April - new month - warmer weather - more opportunities, sounds like a winning combination to me. The few warm days during March really got me craving the outdoors for workout time. So with April arriving I'm excited that the outside will be more available than not.

In the past, being outside was not something I necessarily looked forward to each day. Now though I moan if the weather is too bad to be outside. And it's amazing what I now consider not "too" bad. As I wrot... Wed, 31 Mar 2010 23:08:50 EST I RELATE I don't know if tonight I was just overly emotional or what. I watched the Biggest Loser and cried through a large portion of it. I was watching and they were showing what weight the different ones started at and where they were at now. I just started thinking what an accomplishment this was for each of them. And how emotional this must be for them.

I could so relate to how limited they probably felt at their beginning weights. Whether it was caused by emotional eating, inact... Tue, 30 Mar 2010 23:38:43 EST Passover Experience Tonight I attended with several others from our church, a Passover service and dinner. It was really humbling. No matter how many times I've read or heard sermons dealing with the Passover, experiencing this service was so strong (can't think of a better word to use). I hope all the others in the attendance were as blessed as I was.

God Bless All Of You! Tue, 30 Mar 2010 00:34:55 EST Just to Blog Hope everyone's had an enjoyable weekend and are ready for a great week. Sun, 28 Mar 2010 21:57:14 EST VERY TIRED, BUT A GOOD TIRED Very long day today with Spring cleaning at church. Got home and needed to do my Week 2, C25K walk/run. I had pretty much been standing all day working inside and outside the church, and my feet were complaining. So I started to make an excuse for not doing my walk/run, but the guilt took over and I went outside and got started. I'm so glad I did. I felt so much better, including my feet, after I got done. So from now on, I'll hopefully remember this instance and push on when I think I'... Sat, 27 Mar 2010 22:24:29 EST READY FOR THE WEEKEND Weekend is full for me. We have a Spring cleaning scheduled at our church Saturday morning (inside and outside), so morning will be full til about two. Then, since we're starting so early at church, the afternoon will be devoted to working out and getting things together for Sunday. So needless to say, a full weekend. The good thing is I've got the energy, due to improving my lifestyle (food-wise and exercise-wise). So thanks SP and all the spark-friends who are helping me along my way. ... Fri, 26 Mar 2010 21:22:10 EST I Don't Care If It Is Raining Got up this morning and the rain that wasn't suppose to be here til the afternoon decided to get on in here this morning. I had planned to do my C25K workout outside. Since I started doing it outside, I can't stand the thought of having to do it inside in the basement. Anyway, it was raining, lightly, and I told my husband I was still going outside for my workout. Two minutes into the warm-up walk the rain stopped, had a little wind, but no rain; and by the time for the cool-down walk the... Thu, 25 Mar 2010 17:23:04 EST Thank You Lady Bug Team Members I've received several notes/emails/etc., from our Spring challenge team members thanking my co-leaders and me for our time and motivation we've shown them. I just have to say that you guys are the reason we're able to do our part. Working with this group of Sparksters is great. This group is there for each other to encourage and push, not just in the challenge areas but also when any of us hit other snags or need questions answered. So, to all the LADY BUG team members, thank you for your... Wed, 24 Mar 2010 22:56:52 EST IMPROVEMENT EACH TIME Completed W2D4 (repeating week 2) of the C25K today. I can tell my lungs are getting better at handling the running intervals. Being able to move this way is so foreign to me. It's not Ms. Speedy, but it's good and I'm enjoying it. That's important. To find something to do, not just because it's healthy, but because you enjoy doing it. Also, when I get my stamina built up I can run some with two of my grandchildren (a grandson and a granddaughter) who participate in cross-country track.... Tue, 23 Mar 2010 19:52:57 EST
