SEPPIESUSAN's SparkPeople Blog SEPPIESUSAN's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Post vacation Still not much time to blog, but I wanted to check in to reflect on my vacation goal. A few posts ago I said I wanted to lose 20 pounds before my vacation but would be fine with less since I only had 4 weeks to do it. I ended up losing 14 pounds and was thrilled! Now to keep it up and lose a lot more! (I'm still over 40 pounds away from my goal weight.) I don't think I will be at goal weight by the tim... Mon, 19 Sep 2016 14:02:21 EST Two Weeks Done I have finished my first two weeks of Dukan (second time around) and so far I've lost about 8 pounds. About 6 the first week and 2 the second. Looking forward to seeing future results and working a program all the way through! Okay, sorry, shortest post ever, but it's so hard to blog with two little ones! Mon, 22 Aug 2016 12:33:52 EST Day 4 I'm on day 4 of my 5-day "attack diet" (from the Dukan plan). I was down 6 lbs in 2 days (!) but today my weight went up a little. Fluid retention or whatever, who cares. The diet is working! We booked our vacation - it's in 4 weeks! Due to my maternity leave we can vacation in September this year! (That has never been possible before since I'm a public school teacher and will never be possible again u... Thu, 11 Aug 2016 10:54:05 EST I'm Back! I've been wanting to post a blog for a while now but I couldn't figure out how to from my phone (and who has time to get on a computer?!) until I finally decided to try the Spark app today. So for anyone out there who hasn't seen on Facebook, I had another baby! David Asher was born May 1, 2016, at 30 weeks 5 days, 3 pounds 7 ounces, and 15.9 inches. He was in the NICU for 7 weeks and came home June 21... Mon, 8 Aug 2016 10:51:13 EST All of summer stretched out before us...
Ahh, what a wonderful thought! Tomorrow is the last day of school, and I am not working this summer! (I used to always teach summer school.) This summer is wide open for me to spend quality time with my family and work on whatever I want! I'd like to develop a routine that involves workouts and high-quality activities for my daughter, and I'd like to keep healthy habits going like getting up early and having some consistency to our days. I'd say a lot more but I'm running out of time! I... Mon, 22 Jun 2015 14:28:35 EST Progress Update Hi! I have been following the Dukan diet now for almost four months (I started January 26) and I am down 30 pounds! That's enough that plenty of people are noticing and commenting, and I have been responding with, "Thank you! I'm really pleased with my progress!" because I just can't deny that I am so happy about this.

When I started this diet, I weighed 196 pounds. I have had plenty of weight fluctuations in my past, but those fluctuations always used to range from, say, 135 at my... Thu, 21 May 2015 09:40:11 EST Almost three months I've been doing Dukan since January 26, so almost three months, and I'm now down 24 pounds. The weight is coming off more slowly now, and my weight loss graph has a lot of little zig zags, but the overall trend is still down. I have a lot of motivation to stay on track in spring, because with summer coming I wouldn't want to mess things up. A coworker got me started on Dukan at the beginning, and a month ago or so I got another coworker started on it, and recently she got a fourth coworker go... Fri, 17 Apr 2015 14:11:46 EST Still Dukan-ing Just wanted to quickly update and say I'm still at it with the Dukan diet...still in the "Cruise" phase and will be for a long time, until I reach my goal weight. It's still pretty easy to follow, as long as I'm always prepared in advance with food I can eat, and I'm still shocked that I am continuing to lose weight without limiting quantities. I have been doing this now for about 7 and a half weeks, and I have lost 17 pounds and weigh less than my husband again finally. I'm finding it really... Thu, 19 Mar 2015 12:35:48 EST First month of Dukan - DONE! I have been following the Dukan Diet now for a month and I'm down 13 pounds so far, with almost 40 (36.6) pounds to go. That sounds like a lot when I put it that way... maybe I will decide I'm done sooner, I don't know. I'm a little hung up on wanting a healthy BMI, and I'm almost 30 (29.4) pounds above the top of the healthy BMI range right now. I honestly don't think I look as fat as my weight would suggest, but maybe I just don't see it. The 36.6 more pounds is based on what the Dukan webs... Fri, 27 Feb 2015 13:04:08 EST It basically doesn't stop snowing here.

This picture was taken on my driveway today. There are walls of snow almost as tall as I am on either side. And 12-18 inches are predicted for tomorrow night into Sunday!

I have now been following the Dukan diet for almost 3 weeks, and I'm down about 9 pounds. It's still fairly easy to stick to, but a little boring. One thing about protein-heavy foods...I'm less likely to overdo it with them. It seems m... Fri, 13 Feb 2015 19:47:50 EST Got my snow day...

My husband didn't know that we public school types have to make up all snow days at the end of the year. Today is my third snow day in less than two weeks - will we be in school until July?? (I think there's some rule that instead of going past June 30 we dip into April vacation if need be, but I don't know if that rule has ever been needed.)

I'm down .6 more pounds...they are flying off...I know this pa... Mon, 2 Feb 2015 16:04:36 EST Welcome to February I was down another .6 pounds today, to 189.6. Buh-BYE, 190s!

Yesterday was my first protein + vegetables day. I added spinach to my Dukan oat bran galette (a weird pancake that I actually have been making with wheat germ) and had a grilled chicken salad at a restaurant for dinner. Today was a protein only day. I also made it to the gym both weekend days. When I do strength training I have been finding that I actually get a much better workout when I use light weights and good form/... Sun, 1 Feb 2015 18:59:53 EST Cruise Phase I love that I'm already onto phase 2 of this diet! Phase one was called "Attack," and it was five days, and I lost 4.6 pounds in that time. (Actually, I gained 0.4 two days ago as I mentioned in my last post, and I gained 0.8 yesterday, which - I'm not going to lie - was starting to feel rather discouraging, but then today I was down 2.8 pounds!)

So now I'm onto the "Cruise" phase, which lasts between now and when I hit my "true weight," which should be a little more than four mont... Sat, 31 Jan 2015 13:49:21 EST Quick Update Today I was up 0.4 pounds, but I'm not discouraged. For one thing, I had to weigh myself much earlier this morning, and I tend to weigh a little more when I have to wake up earlier. For another thing, well, TMI, but female cycle stuff happened. Which means that hopefully I'm in for a nice satisfying weigh-in soon. (In the Dukan book he actually says that after your period you can expect to see your weight drop at a "dizzying" rate.)

It has been really easy to stick to this diet so ... Thu, 29 Jan 2015 19:12:55 EST The Dukan Diet The Dukan Diet is a fad diet book written by a French doctor. The French version came out in 2000 and the American version came out in 2011. So I'm a little late getting on board. Supposedly Jennifer Lopez, Giselle, and Kate Middleton (or her mom??) have all done this diet, but who knows if that's true.

I know it's controversial. If you google "celebrities Dukan" the first article that comes up tells you why you SHOULDN'T do this diet. (Though the reasons listed in that article wer... Wed, 28 Jan 2015 11:05:01 EST Hello again!

I finally have a moment where Layla is napping and I'm in front of a computer (as opposed to my phone, where it would be hard to write a blog entry), and I have access to photos. I've been wanting to get back into blogging for a while! It has been a LONG time!

My adorable little troublemaker is now almost 13 months old. She is so fun but she's into the making messes of the house stage, which can get exhau... Tue, 27 Jan 2015 10:44:25 EST Sleepblogging Thank you to those who have been checking in on me and my apologies for not responding sooner! Layla is now 6 weeks and 2 days old, just over 41 weeks gestationally. She spent the first three weeks of her life in the special care nursery and we were so happy when we were finally able to bring her home. She's keeping me so busy with feedings, pumping, and in general trying to figure her out (what those cries mean!) that there isn't much time for sleep and Mommy is TIRED! I know it'll get bette... Thu, 13 Feb 2014 07:52:05 EST Layla Grace is here!!!

Surprise! I was only 35 weeks 1 day, but my water broke and the risk of infection was greater than the risk of prematurity, so I was induced. I had a fairly fast labor (Pitocin started at 9:15 A.M., started having painful contractions about 4 hours later, and Layla was born at 5:28 P.M.) and had no pain medications. Even though she appeared healthy at birth (Apgars of 9) she had to be whisked away to the special c... Sat, 4 Jan 2014 18:08:18 EST 33 Weeks

This is a quick post from work for FITGIRL15, who continues to check in on me despite my major lack of keeping up with SP. As you can see, I've really popped! I wish I felt as ready as I look. :) For the most part I'm feeling fine, although I've started to get really tired and continue to be plagued with bad heartburn some nights. We have just seven weeks to go and so much to do before then - so many house project... Mon, 16 Dec 2013 12:43:37 EST 28 Weeks! I entered the third trimester a couple of days ago (28 weeks). It won't be much longer now!

Here's Little Bit on the inside (28 weeks 0 days):

(Her arms are both up, you can see one of her elbows by the side of her face...all the other stuff at the bottom of the photo is 3D ultrasound weirdness.)

And here's Little Bit on the outside (today, 28 weeks 2 days):
<img src="http://photos-... Wed, 13 Nov 2013 17:25:49 EST I was on the radio today!

y-rules

I come in at 24:17. Fri, 6 Sep 2013 15:43:18 EST 18 Weeks 3 Days

I am in love!!! Thu, 5 Sep 2013 17:40:44 EST Glucose Intolerance Hi everyone - this is me at 16 weeks! (I will be 17 weeks tomorrow.)

I am well into the second trimester now and feeling much better. :) However, I recently found out that I have a glucose intolerance that could turn into gestational diabetes once I am further into the pregnancy. So now I have to check my blood sugar at home four times a day and count my carbs. What better way to count carbs than to use... Sun, 25 Aug 2013 15:43:08 EST News News News!!! Guess what, everybody! After months of agonizing silence, I'm back to share my wonderful news! Today I am 12 weeks pregnant with a little girl! My husband and I are completely thrilled!!! Due February 3, 2014. :) :) :)

(P.S. - We just found out this afternoon that it's a girl, thanks to MaterniT21, which is a blood test that checks for chromosome problems. Everything was negative and we got to find out the baby's sex super early!!!) Mon, 22 Jul 2013 16:16:17 EST Time to check in with my Sparkies... Hi everyone. Sorry I've been so silent lately. I've been torn between sharing everything that's been going on with me - because I know how sweet Sparkers are and that I'd get a lot of support - and keeping it to myself because it's not really SP-related. But, today is a SNOW DAY, so I have some time and have decided to share.

I guess the short version of my story is that I had a lot of fertility testing done to figure out what might have caused my miscarriages, and they actually fo... Fri, 8 Mar 2013 09:13:35 EST 2013 Goals Happy New Year!

This year, I will track all my food on every work day. I already have most of tomorrow's food tracked! Tue, 1 Jan 2013 21:58:08 EST Aren't you glad you're not me? Man, was I looking forward to having a week and a half off. I'd been feeling really run down and wanted a chance to relax and refresh. But then I realized I wasn't just tired from working too much - I was actually sick. Long story short, I have shingles. Shingles! WTF! I have very itchy spots on my abdomen and back, and I'm kind of exhausted. Oh, and I think I have PMS too.

On top of that, my weight is the highest it's ever been and I so desperately want to do something about it bu... Thu, 27 Dec 2012 19:41:44 EST My first two weeks at the Y: A review I am very happy to belong to a gym that is within walking distance of home again!

On Monday night I took a class called "Boot Camp." I was running a little late from work (crazzzzzzy week at work) and barely made it in time, so I didn't really have my pick of dumbbell weights. I think the weights I was using were a little too light for the most part. I liked the class overall, though not as much as Body Pump - it seemed way easier.

On Tuesday night I took a class called ... Sun, 2 Dec 2012 17:55:18 EST Thanksgiving and Kettlebell Training at the Y So...Thanksgiving was exhausting, but it was a success! To prepare, I spent a whole day cleaning my kitchen, and another whole day and a half cooking. We ended up having 15 people - mostly from my husband's mother's side of the family, which is huge. My parents and one of my brothers came (my other brother is on the other side of the country, in CA, and had Thanksgiving with his in-laws). My parents and brother were the last to arrive, even though my mom was the one bringing the turkey! My fa... Sun, 25 Nov 2012 21:26:37 EST Follow-up appointment with the ob-gyn It's been two weeks since my second miscarriage, and today I had a follow-up appontment with the ob-gyn. It was pretty uneventful, but some sweet Sparkies have been asking me how I'm doing so I figured I'd share. Plus, if I write it down, I'll remember it.

Basically, I had my HCG and TSH (thyroid) tested again - my TSH was borderline before so maybe going on medication would help me to not miscarry. And in January or February I'm supposed to have an X-ray taken of my uterus (if I'm... Mon, 12 Nov 2012 17:46:01 EST Everything happening all at once.. I had another miscarriage. In the middle of a hurricane. And it somehow triggered some kind of neurological thing that made my lip swell up. I was in the ER for 9 hours today. At least school was canceled due to the weather.. Today just sucks. Mon, 29 Oct 2012 13:43:38 EST Drama at Seven Weeks Yesterday afternoon I had spotting and it was too late to go to my obgyn's office, so the nurse advised me to go to the ER. After hours and hours of waiting around at the ER and a few tests, I found out that I have a gestational sac but they couldn't see a fetal pole. They tested my hcg and told me to call my doctor's office today. I did call today, and was told to go in on Monday to see if my hcg levels have doubled, and I'll need another ultrasound in a few weeks. I had more spotting this m... Sat, 27 Oct 2012 12:40:37 EST First Trimester Class We did the first official thing of the pregnancy today - we went to a first trimester class at my ob-gyn's office! The class was kind of useful - I found out a handful of things were okay that I had thought were banned, like using products with salyclic acid, doing ab work, flaxseed, and Claritin. I think I will take a conservative approach though and not use things if I don't have to. I was actually able to give up virtually all caffeine without a problem! It helped that I started to cut bac... Wed, 24 Oct 2012 12:30:24 EST My BIG News Drumroll please....

I'm pregnant!!

Okay, so many apologies about this picture:
1) It's blurry.
2) Please ignore gross wet paper towel in background.
3) There really is vertical line there, I promise you. The directions on the test said it didn't matter how faint the line was - if it was there at all, it was a positive test!

I found out just over a week ago and have be... Mon, 22 Oct 2012 20:25:32 EST First blog post in over a month First, thank you so much to those who have been checking in on me...some of you multiple times. It's not like me to be as absent from Spark, and some of my favorite Sparkers noticed. That's so sweet.

304

Now here's where the writer's block comes in. I don't want to write about my current state of affairs. I feel like I'm living in maintanence kind of, except that I weigh 20+ pounds more than a healthy weight. What I mean is, I'm eating mostly normal portions... Mon, 8 Oct 2012 09:01:45 EST Cape Cod 2012 I went to Cape Cod several weeks ago, but finally just got an email with the pictures from my MIL...and wanted to share!

First is me doing one of my absolute favorite activities, boogie boarding.:)

Next we have the gloomy gray beach. Notice nobody else is in the water that day except me. :)The waves were big and super choppy, and it was raining a little.
<img src="http://photos-ak.sparkpeople.... Mon, 27 Aug 2012 21:57:48 EST Finally, photographic evidence! Last time I wrote I said I'd been avoiding cameras. Well, all of a sudden I have a few recent photos of myself so I thought I'd share!

First, my brother took the photo below yesterday at Weetamoo Woods in RI where we went hiking and came across some very friendly horses. :)

I am 5'6" (or 5'5" and a half-ish) and was 174lbs yesterday, so that puts me deep into the overweight range. So, I was actually pleas... Wed, 15 Aug 2012 16:52:41 EST The End of Overeating I've been reading _The End of Overeating_, and so far I've been disappointed. The first several sections of the book were about the tricks that food processing companies use to get you to eat more - using a combination that is difficult to resist of sugar, fat, and salt, and sometimes chemicals that mimic all kinds of flavors. When I was reading these chapters all I wanted to do was eat more sugar, fat and salt! Counterproductive. Now I've finally reached the behavior modification section of ... Thu, 9 Aug 2012 12:10:59 EST Four Day Mini Challenge Hi everyone... just thought I'd share that since we are going to Cape Cod this weekend, I'm on a mini challenge to prepare. I started yesterday. I'm not tracking calories (probably should be, but I've been doing this long enough to know in general how much to eat to stay in range), but I do have some rules:

*smoothie for breakfast
*batch-cooked meal for lunch
*something small for dinner, things like fish or chicken and vegetables
*optional: 1 small drink, 1 small des... Tue, 24 Jul 2012 13:33:31 EST One Choice Instead of Another It's a little after 5 P.M. and I'm hungry. I was just about to eat a granola bar AND bring a brand new box of crackers to the computer with me...but then I thought about how I've made it all day so far with only healthy choices - smoothie, coffee, almond milk for breakfast. One serving of a batch-cooked meal for lunch (white chicken chili). One "just a handful" bag of almonds and cherries for snacks. Almost 90 minutes at the gym. And now it's practically dinner time. So I put the processed sn... Thu, 12 Jul 2012 17:22:00 EST Over 3 weeks since my last blog... I've just really had nothing I want to write about. My weight is embarrassing, so I don't want to talk about that. I've been on track with my exercise just about forever, and back to tracking my calorie intake for the past couple of weeks, and though I initially saw a drop of a few scary-high pounds at first, I've been stuck with my weight still way too high and not moving ever since. I know the number on the scale isn't everything and I have some muscle, but I don't fit into last summer's sh... Fri, 29 Jun 2012 10:55:10 EST First Outdoor Run in my New Running Shoes (See link to my new shoes in my last post.)

They felt good! They weren't cushy like my other running shoes have felt when they were new, but I felt confident in them. They're so beautiful. :) I haven't been doing much outdoor running lately, so my legs are a little sore today, but I felt good and maintained a similar pace to when I used to go regularly, if not even a little faster (which is still very slow - now that I know that Stop & Shop is exactly one mile from home, and it too... Wed, 6 Jun 2012 10:25:13 EST I am in love... ...with my new sneakers!

7s+750+running+shoe?prodId=247423&cm_m
mc=Shopping-_-all-_-NewBalance-_-24742
3&mr:referralID=9e375ae9-ad94-11e1-9e8
b-001b2166c62d

They are the freaking coolest sneakers I've ever owned. Sneaker shopping seems to have totally shifted since the last time I bought a new pair, only a few months ago. I felt like I had to choose between a barefoot type shoe (I was really tempted, but ... Sun, 3 Jun 2012 19:54:59 EST 1 for 2 so far... I remember several years ago, before SparkPeople, I had a notebook where I'd write little promises to myself like the one in yesterday's blog, and then I'd grade myself the next day on how well I did. So far I'd get a 50%. I did the workout yesterday, but I was feeling yucky because a) I had eaten less than I was used to and b) the air conditioning at the gym was broken. So I went home and had a small handful of honey roasted peanuts, which was not on my tracker. So I added it in! Cheating? H... Fri, 1 Jun 2012 08:18:26 EST Promise to Myself I promise that I will:
*Eat only what is on my tracker today
*Do my full strength training workout this afternoon, and 10 minutes of cardio at the end
*Eat fewer than 2,400 calories tomorrow Thu, 31 May 2012 09:54:03 EST The Amazingly and Frighteningly Powerful Impact Coffee has on Me So for the past few weeks I have NOT been at ALL Sparkful. Eating has been a mess, no tracking, some days I didn't even log in to spin the wheel. And on top of that, the one thing I really prided myself in - the fact that I "always" work out, even when my eating is a mess - fell apart. It started the day my mother called me from the hospital as I was leaving school and about to head to the gym, about a month ago or so. I drove straight to the hospital to see her, and did not go to the gym tha... Sun, 20 May 2012 10:33:47 EST I'm OK... I have some really sweet Spark friends and I'm starting to feel guilty because I haven't eased anyone's mind that I'm OK. I am. It was emotionally draining, but physically it really wasn't that bad, and losing it at 5 weeks is nothing like losing it later when you have more of an emotional commitment and more physical complications. I'm really OK, going to wait a month and then try again. Sun, 13 May 2012 20:45:43 EST Home from the ER I had a miscarriage. :( Sat, 5 May 2012 15:46:22 EST Doctor's Appointment No offense for those whose advice to chill out is being blatantly disregarded here. :)

I just made an appointment to see the doctor on call at 5:20 this evening. I'm going to get a blood test to find out for sure one way or the other. I am so excited I'm kinda shaking. Yeah, emotional much???

PS - Any advice on questions to ask the doctor if the answer is positive? I already want to ask about the medications and over the counter stuff I take to see if it is safe, plus I ... Fri, 4 May 2012 12:24:59 EST ?!???! My alarm doesn't go off until 6 A.M., but this morning I was out of bed before 5:30. It's day 36 of my cycle and I took the 2nd test that was in the box I'd bought (test #1 was done on day 32 with a negative result). I know I did the test correctly...I used the cup method which someone recommended to me and it was easier that way...and...hubby called from the bedroom, "Anything happening?" and I said, "I'm not sure." He said, "What do you mean, you're not sure?" and I said, "Come look." He lo... Fri, 4 May 2012 07:41:52 EST
