SENIORSWIMMER's SparkPeople Blog SENIORSWIMMER's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Good day I'm not sure why I overeat. I feel so much better when I don't. Just 36 hours into "cutting back," and my energy level is up. My outlook is more positive. For the first time in months I am caught up on laundry. I've had a great day. 224 Thu, 2 Nov 2017 17:41:26 EST Kitchen remodel Our kitchen cabinets have been ordered. They are scheduled for delivery May 4th. Our contractor says that sometimes they are a week or two late.

This morning I am scavenging for boxes downtown.

It's scary. It's exciting. It will still not be my dream kitchen. Hopefully, it will look nicer and be more user friendly.

I am planning to post before and after pictures on Facebook. I am having trouble getting my pictures to upload to my computer from my phone.... Tue, 14 Apr 2015 06:46:57 EST Beans instead of popcorn I REALLY wanted a big bowl of popcorn tonight. I thought about it for a big part of my paper route. "Just make a half batch." Oh, I really wanted a whole batch (8 cups). "It's not worth having to wash the popper for a half batch." I was really hungry. Finally, near the end of the route, I was asking myself what I could eat instead of popcorn. I settled on some leftover 15 bean Cajun soup I made last week. It was delicious.

I still like to feel full. I can stay on track for ... Tue, 3 Mar 2015 21:24:39 EST The Gym I joined the gym I belong to a little over a year ago. It's a 24/7 operation. With your membership you get a key card, and you can workout anytime you want. My original membership was about $33 a month. Amazing. The place is huge. There are two large rooms full of weight machines and free weights. There is a large room with a laminated wood floor they use for aerobics classes. There is an indoor track. There is a substantial row of ellipticals and treadmills and stationary bicycles w... Fri, 20 Feb 2015 09:14:34 EST I am a number I have read several posts where the author makes the statement, "I am not a number on the scale." I am not there yet. It's been a long time since I have been there. I have been a number on the scale since the summer in between 6th and 7th grade.
Sometimes I pretend the number doesn't exist. Sometimes I ignore it for long periods of time. Sometimes I am happy about it. But that number is always there. Sadly, it is a major component of my self-esteem.
My life is also all about ... Tue, 17 Feb 2015 09:48:44 EST Michael Finigan This has been going through my head for two days now. I just had to write it down.
When I was a music teacher, my 3rd and 4th graders LOVED this song:

There was a man named Michael Finigan.
He grew whiskers on his chinigan.
Wind came up and blew them in again.
Poor old Michael Finigan.
Begin again

And you sang the song over and over and over again.

I have changed the lyrics to suit my present situation.

There was a gal name... Thu, 12 Feb 2015 19:19:01 EST Cooking class What a deal. The class is free. There is an instruction portion that lasts 45 minutes to an hour. Then we cook! Yesterday we made Mexican chicken soup, chicken enchiladas, and honey granola that we used in fruit parfaits.
Forget going out for lunch. We all eat together before we leave. Yesterday we fed the church staff too.
I like the philosophy too. It is very similar to Spark. You can eat anything you want. You just have to control your portion sizes, and there are some t... Thu, 12 Feb 2015 11:02:09 EST Healthy Cooking I freely admit I have not been cooking this week. I can't seem to make myself get in there and get after it. Usually, I love to cook.
496
Kansas State University is offering a free healthy cooking class in Coffeyville starting Wednesday. It runs through April. I have signed up. I think this is just the motivation I need right now. Plus, it's Coffeyville. I taught there for 7 years. I am looking forward to reconnecting with people I haven't seen for a long time. ... Sat, 7 Feb 2015 10:12:57 EST Swimming I need to get my head above water with all this dinky mileage I am pulling in the pool (pun intended). I swim on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday. I am not up to swimming a half mile every time I swim, but I think I can do it on Fridays. I have until Tuesday to recover. Mentally, I need to do it. 1/2 mile is when I start feeling like a swimmer. It's only 200 more meters that I am swimming now. That's 4 laps (8 lengths). It won't be fast, and it won't be pretty, but I can do it.

Wh... Fri, 6 Feb 2015 09:58:36 EST Obstacles At the beginning of October I had some MINOR surgery done on my foot. The doctor told me I would not be able to swim until it was completely healed. I thought, "2 or 3 weeks."
246
I had the toenail removed on my big toe, right foot. I have psoriasis, and the toenail was becoming impossible to trim. Thu, 5 Feb 2015 08:26:05 EST S Health The app I am using on my phone to track my calories and exercise is S Health. It functions as a pedometer too. When you get to 10,000 steps for the day, it plays a little trumpet fanfare. Oh.....the stupid things that motivate me. I REALLY work to get those extra steps in just so I can hear it. It also gives you badges for staying in your calorie range, getting your steps in, and burning all the calories you're supposed to burn in a day.

Because of our current internet situati... Mon, 1 Sep 2014 10:19:51 EST Swimming My really big news today is that before I left for Wichita Friday, I swam 1 mile. First time in almost 20 years! It was trudgery. Very slow. It took me 57:39. I used to be able to swim a mile in about 48 minutes. My goal was to be able to swim a mile by Sept. 1.

1 mile is NOT going to be my standard workout for quite awhile. It's just nice to know that I can do it. Right now my standard workout is 1100-1200 meters. Here is the way it breaks down:

Warm up swim,20... Sun, 8 Jun 2014 13:44:20 EST Housework About half of my house is clean. It's a small house. I have this compulsive feeling that I should be able to get it all clean in a day, but it almost never happens. Housework do laundry, to go swimming, to talk to my sister, to throw the paper...I also interrupt myself. I am so detail oriented. Sometimes I think I am incapable of just dusting and vacuuming. I get sidetracked with deep cleaning or organizing something. You would think the house would be spotless. Ha! ... Tue, 3 Jun 2014 22:38:23 EST Hummingbirds I was so excited this early spring. I got our hummingbird feeder out about a week before the hummingbirds came back. We had two pairs of "hummers" buzzing around. Every time you looked out the window, some of them were there. I was putting fresh food out for them every few days. One time they sucked the feeder dry. The dominant male had such a personality. What a hoot! Cheap entertainment. One of the females was getting so she would hover close to me.

Then, they just quit ... Mon, 2 Jun 2014 21:56:05 EST Processing Turnip Greens We pulled our turnips this afternoon. They are all cleaned and ready to snack on or cook. I chopped the greens and froze them. I got about two quarts. I learned how to use my new little food processor. It's a Ninja. It's supposed to be really good for juicing and making smoothies.

I put the greens through three waters, washing them thoroughly. DH picked them around 4:30. It was a little warm out. I thought it would plump the greens up a bit if I let them soak in the water ... Sun, 1 Jun 2014 22:39:17 EST Moving on Brrr. I am freezing. Mid morning in mid March and it's only 34 degrees with a cold wind at 13 mph. I am completing the last day of the Michael Mosely 3 1/2 day fast. That also makes me cold. This is the third time I have done this fast. Every time has been a completely different experience. This time the hardest obstacle was the cold. I really haven't felt hungry. Weak, tired, but not especially hungry.

It seems like it's easier to not eat at all than it is to eat in moder... Tue, 25 Mar 2014 11:39:11 EST Aunt Lois Yesterday was the best Sunday I have had in quite awhile. No binging. Some people would say I was borderline. I ate plenty. I just didn't feel out of control like I did last Sunday.

I didn't have problems with Sunday binges until I took the job with the paper. I think getting up in the middle of the night to go to work before we make the long pilgrimage to church has brought the underlying emotional issues I have with Sunday food to the surface with fierce force.

Th... Mon, 17 Mar 2014 10:51:12 EST Seduction of Inadequacy "I can't do this because....." For me it's usually because I need to do something else first. I can't buy new clothes because I will lose more weight. Any clothes I buy now will be too big. My husband needs new clothes worse than I do. (I have been this weight since last June.)

I can't work outside because ________ is dirty in the house. If I piddle around long enough in the house, I never go outside and take care of business.

I can't have people over because the h... Fri, 7 Mar 2014 21:07:00 EST Nightmare Torte I am back from my paper route safe and sound. The worst thing about this morning was not the roads, although they were slick. It was the cold and wind. I am still trying to warm up. DH went with me on the route. Now that's a supportive husband that will get up at 2 A.M. and go out in weather like this.

The blessing in all this is we are NOT making the pilgrimage to church today, so I will not have a monster Sunday. The stress for my day is over.

We came back home a... Sun, 2 Mar 2014 10:20:05 EST Day 4 Just in time for the approaching winter storm, we purchased new patio furniture. Ha. It's just a little bistro table and two chairs. We got it at WalMart. It's very cute. I think we will have to sit out there in the ice storm and drink some hot tea.

The storm is supposed to be really bad. We are supposed to get a quarter of an inch of ice, possibly with snow on top. I can pick up my papers for delivery as early as 2 A.M. Sunday morning. I usually get them at 4. DH will hel... Fri, 28 Feb 2014 23:12:52 EST Persistence? Day 3 I didn't swim today. I made the decision about 10:30, and I feel good about it. I got up this morning very tired. I am a morning person. The first four hours of the day is when I am usually the most productive. My muscles were sore, and both of my knees were achy from the killer kickboard workout I do.

So, I was disappointed when I got up and didn't want to do anything. I did make myself get going, but I sure didn't get anything done very quickly. I was so tired my mental pr... Thu, 27 Feb 2014 19:11:20 EST Consistent Persistence, Day 2 I am tired, just tired, not exhausted. Part of this is due to the new behaviors and attitudes I'm trying to cultivate. I think most of the fatigue is due to me increasing my swimming (FINALLY) to 1/2 mile each workout. I cannot believe how tender my muscles are, but they are sore in all the right places. That means my stroke mechanics are on the money. 8 months of pool closures and injuries really cramped my fitness regime.

Now there is a sign on the pool that it will be close... Wed, 26 Feb 2014 21:28:33 EST Consistent Persistence This is a character trait that I lack in many areas of my life - not just "dieting." The dailyness of life does me in. I have trouble keeping up with vacuuming and mopping, weeding, practicing the musical instruments that I play, reading the Bible every day, keeping the household budget, scooping the litter box, and giving the cats their Laxatone every day. I do a good job keeping up with cooking, washing dishes, and doing laundry. I show up for work every day. That's about it. I have b... Tue, 25 Feb 2014 21:02:34 EST Muffin tops I went to my favorite coffee shop in the whole world today. Ane Mae's, downtown Independence, KS. Yes, I like it better than Starbuck's (although I enjoy Starbuck's too). I bought a pound of whole beans to bring home for coffee, I got a cup of coffee, and I broke down and ordered my favorite muffin - strawberry white chocolate chip.
24
It had been SO long since I had one, and I seriously did think about ordering a bowl of fruit. (That's some good stuff too.) But it... Thu, 30 Jan 2014 20:34:52 EST Roasted Garlic I had a baked potato for lunch today. Yum. One of my favorites.

When we bake potatoes, we roast bulbs of garlic at the same time. It's SO good, and virtually no calories. We just cut the tops off, wrap them in foil, and bake them with the potatoes. When they're done, let them cool a little. Squeeze the garlic out onto your baked potato. It's so good. We got the idea from a restaurant when we lived in Lubbock, Texas.

I think I'm about to take the experience a step... Tue, 21 Jan 2014 15:02:00 EST Floundering I make good plans. I just don't always stick to them. This is a problem I have in all areas of my life. It's not just a food problem. Food and shopping are the two biggest boundary setting problems I have. I am also guilty of trying to pack way too much in a day. I used to be hard on myself when I didn't get everything accomplished I had set out to do. Now, I tend to be more hard on myself about not planning realistically.

Reality. Firm boundaries.

So, why the we... Tue, 14 Jan 2014 07:54:32 EST Michael Mosely's 3 1/2 day fast I have 12 minutes until I can eat. I am going to split an apple with my husband. Sweet Tango. They are new at our WalMart.

I cannot believe I made it three and half days without eating.

I did have peppermint herbal tea every morning, and I drank a cup of homemade chicken broth twice a day. I also used the fasting solution from Genesis products. I think it did help, and it didn't taste nearly as nasty as I imagined it would.

Mosely is right. The first day... Mon, 4 Nov 2013 13:03:55 EST Size 8 Shorts I wore a pair of my size 8 denim shorts on my paper route yesterday morning. They were snug, but not skin tight like they were. They weren't terribly uncomfortable to wear. I considered wearing them to do housework today, but I've opted for loose fitting clothing. I did put the size 8 shorts back on yesterday afternoon. Size 8 is my destination size, but I do want them looser.

For a long time just seeing the numbers on the scale get smaller was satisfying. That doesn't motiva... Mon, 26 Aug 2013 08:14:47 EST The Sunday Solution The goal on Sunday is not to lose weight. It's just not to lose control. As with most obstacles, the solution has more than one part.

The problem is that my schedule on Sunday is radically different from the rest of the week. I get up at 2 A.M. to throw the Sunday paper. The rest of the week I am up at 6:30, just because I am a morning person. The rest of the week the paper is an afternoon paper.

On Sundays I have been ravenous hungry. It's genuine stomach growling... Sun, 18 Aug 2013 17:19:21 EST What I Have Learned about Canning It's a hot, sweaty job. Wear loose fitting clothes and comfortable shoes.

It always takes longer than you think it is going to take. Don't count on getting too much else done.

Get all the same size jar mouth. It's maddening to try to keep wide mouth jar lids and rings separate from the regular size. Just this morning I decided we are going to all wide mouth jars. I put all my regular size jars and rings in the Goodwill pile in the garage. We even have wide mouth, l... Fri, 9 Aug 2013 14:27:20 EST First Swim in New Suit I hope every swim I have for the rest of my life is like today's workout - just longer. I think I am on the verge of FINALLY getting these injuries behind me. The ribs are healed, just weak. The heel spur doesn't hurt. My heel just feels strange sometimes. The stretches the podiatrist gave me to do help more than anything. My stroke was just so smooth and even, and my intensity was good.

Today was my first swim in my new suit from Land's End. I love their suits, but they rar... Wed, 7 Aug 2013 20:08:49 EST Canning in My Kitchen (to the tune of “Sunshine on My Shoulders)

Canning in my kitchen makes me sweaty.
Canning in my kitchen makes me tired.
Canning in my kitchen makes my back hurt.
Canning, almost all the time, makes me whine.

If I take the day, and spend it canning,
I start the job with lots of zest and zeal.
Hours pass. My feet hurt and my neck aches.
All that food has somehow lost appeal.

Thank the Lord for all this wondrous bounty.
He watc... Sat, 27 Jul 2013 15:01:40 EST Size 8 I had DH pull down the tub of size 8 clothes from its top shelf in the garage yesterday.

I can get into everything except one dress. Now, would I want to be seen in public??? Probably not. I am not a fan of super tight clothes. 10 more pounds, and everything in the tub should be wearable.

I do have on a pair of shorts that was in the tub. "Small." They are very comfortable. Love those elastic waists.

10 more pounds....Oh yeah. I forgot. I'm stuck at 1... Sun, 21 Jul 2013 19:51:17 EST Spoke Too Soon OK. I should have known not to post I wasn't hungry in my SP status. This morning I got up early, fed the cats, got dressed, and I headed to the garden at 6:30 A.M. No time for breakfast. I wanted to beat the heat. There was also no wind, and I wanted to RoundUp the fence row by the garden.

I came in a little after 9. FAMISHED. I was actually feeling lightheaded. My stomach had been growling for awhile. I just ate a 600 calorie breakfast. The good news is this is a swimmi... Thu, 13 Jun 2013 10:46:55 EST Spark Menu Isn't Working for Me I'm not one to give up easily. If a project isn't coming together, I usually blame myself, stop working on it for awhile, and I come back to tackle it with a new angle. I'm slow to accomplish things, but I usually do get the job done.

The Spark Menu. There are several problems. As I mentioned before in blogs, I won't use the menu in the winter time because there are too many days of no hot food. I thought it would be the perfect summer menu. Wrong.

It's just not ta... Fri, 7 Jun 2013 10:40:26 EST Fresh Produce I just got back from picking up my order for this week at the organic farm - a quart of strawberries and a pound of broccoli. Here is what I think I have learned about growing your own food or buying it from someone who grows and harvests it for you.

You know what, if any, chemicals have been used on your food. (We do use Sevyn Dust, if we have to.) The big factor for me is the short time from harvest to consumption. The produce is so much juicier than it is in the store. Some... Sat, 1 Jun 2013 11:57:08 EST Tornado 2 Gossip My neighbor said there were 3 tornadoes that touched down in or near Independence yesterday afternoon. One was out at the junior college south of town. Another one was between our house and Sycamore, which is 7 miles from our house. This was the one that was closest to us. Another one touched down by railroad tracks....I don't remember which ones. That is why the sirens wailed for so long.

US 400 and US 169 were both closed for awhile. The storm was crossing the road, and i... Sat, 1 Jun 2013 11:42:44 EST Tornado 2 AGAIN the tornado sirens wailed for an hour this afternoon. This was a little scarier than last week. There was THE MOST wicked looking cloud in the southeast. But it was southeast of Independence. Tornadoes move north and east. Of course this was all during my paper route.

I did take cover for awhile. I pulled under a brick carport and sat for awhile listening to the siren's song and tying the plastic bags on my papers. Mostly I was trying to get away from the hail. It was... Fri, 31 May 2013 20:31:17 EST Overweight No More I have waited for this day for a long time. As is sometimes the case, it came as an unexpected surprise.

I have not been doing anything regularly - weighing, exercising, using the nutrition tracker. I have been the Queen of Inconsistency. I have been feeling the need to weigh in the last couple of days to see where I was. What a surprise.

The chart at the doctor's office says the overweight category for my height and build start at 145. This morning I weighed in a... Fri, 31 May 2013 11:55:40 EST Clothes Size 12 is fitting loosely, except around the waist, where it fits. Middle age spread. I've got a start on that old lady belly. Being injured and not getting vigorous exercise has made that worse.

I still have not gotten my big girl clothes to the consignment shop. I have tried two or three times to get them to Tulsa, and the stores have always been closed. Walking around downtown while my car was getting worked on last week, guess what I found. There's a consignment shop on ... Tue, 28 May 2013 07:40:00 EST Tornado The tornado sirens wailed for quite awhile yesterday afternoon. DH was at work. I was downtown getting my car worked on. The cats were home alone. What bothered me the most was us all being separated.

The tornado touched down on the west side of town, near Four County Mental Health. That's about a mile from where DH works. DH and his students took cover. He said the wind was bad, and there was a lot of rain, but he hadn't heard that there was any damage.

Downtown ... Tue, 21 May 2013 09:03:44 EST Weather update The weather band went off almost hourly in the early part of the night. We were under a tornado watch for awhile. Coffeyville, 15 miles to our southeast, was ordered to take cover, but we just had lots and lots of rain. We had 4.9 inches of rain in our gauge this morning.

I cleaned out the closet where we take cover. This is the only time of year the floor in there gets vacuumed. (How often do you vacuum the closet floor?) I left everything out, because more storms are in the... Mon, 20 May 2013 13:34:15 EST Shopping the Spark Menu We are not on menu right now. My goal date to go for it again is the Tuesday after Memorial Day. Most days I'm not even tracking. Some days are good. Some days are not. Yesterday was a not day. I think I'm in a miserable spot. The old junk food meals I used to love don't taste as good as they did! And I feel TERRIBLE after I eat them. Chicken strips at DQ was my downfall yesterday. I had a coupon! It wasn't worth it. How many times am I going to have to go through this scenario be... Thu, 16 May 2013 09:01:04 EST Gardening and Yard Work This is the first year we have had a garden since I retired. It is just big enough I am having trouble keeping up with Spark. My days are so full, but not hurried. Retirement is awesome.

We visited a whole foods organic farm this morning. They have a little bit of everything. We can even buy 1/4 beef from them - grass or feed finished. We are both old farm kids. Beef cattle was a major source of our parents' income. We were both raised on home grown beef. I doubt we ever ... Sat, 11 May 2013 12:53:32 EST Chickpea Stew Okay. I think I'm getting the hang of it. When the Spark Menu just gives you general directions or a recipe embedded in the menu, it's pretty bland as written. We love spices. I have started finishing these foods with lots of spices, except salt.

I looked with some trepidation upon the chickpea stew instructions. I pulled a large green onion from our garden and sautéed it in the olive oil. Then I followed the directions. Near the end of cooking I added a lot of oregano and... Sat, 4 May 2013 09:42:38 EST Spaghetti with meat sauce I made spaghetti with meat sauce yesterday. I used all ground turkey. I had never done that before. When I've used ground turkey, I've used half turkey, half lean ground beef. I used canned tomatoes, and I added LOTS of home grown oregano and basil, plus a little onion powder. It was quite good. The herbs helped me not to reach for the salt shaker. I figured there was enough salt in the tomatoes to take care of my sodium needs!

DH took it in his lunch today. I imagine he wi... Fri, 3 May 2013 11:19:46 EST Nonfat Dairy Products I am not a picky eater. Honest, I am not. Except for fish or sushi, I will try most anything once.

So, when I saw nonfat cottage cheese and plain, nonfat yogurt on the grocery list for this week I thought, "I haven't had nonfat cottage cheese in years. I bet it's improved a lot." I had never had plain, nonfat yogurt. Into the grocery cart they went.

And soon the nonfat cottage cheese will be going down the garbage disposal. That and the yogurt I had for breakfast t... Thu, 2 May 2013 10:06:26 EST Buttermilk Biscuits This is big news. I FINALLY got my mom's buttermilk biscuit recipe right. They turned out just like mom's. Big, light, fluffy. I patted out the dough intead of rolling it out. We're having one tonight with our soup, intead of using crackers.

No more refrigerated biscuits. No more frozen pizza. It's going to be homemade, or we'll eat something else.

This morning was the big stock up shopping trip. By the time I got to the fozen foods and produce, I was hungry. I ... Sat, 13 Apr 2013 18:57:03 EST Katie and the Paper I am the last person I deliver the paper to on my route. The Reporter switched the route all around, so that when I pull in my driveway, I am done. Thoughtful. It also makes me, "Giddie-up. Go!" It's not fun having your neighbors unhappy with you because their paper is late.

Over spring break DH was helping me deliver papers. We put a paper in a tube down the street from our house. For some reason DH looked back. "That dog is getting the paper out of the tube!" We had hear... Wed, 3 Apr 2013 09:25:04 EST Sunday Survival I can't remember if I have blogged about taking on a paper route or not. I started training February 1, and I took the route over solo about the third week of February. I am getting settled in now. 347 papers to deliver, five days a week. It is one of the larger routes in our small town. I really am enjoying it. Most of the guys that work in circulation (the people that get the paper ready for delivery) are former students of me and my husband. They're all grown up now. Some of them h...
