SEATTLESIMS's SparkPeople Blog SEATTLESIMS's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community week 1 check in Okay, joined the gym a week ago.
Went 2.5 times.. yes a 1/2 a time with my son, we only had about 20 mins to stop in. Did 10 mins cardio machines and about 10 minutes of arm strength machines.

My plan is Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturday or Sunday or both.
MAYBE some short Thursdays if my son is willing to sneak over for a little while the daughter is at basketball practice, but it is a busy time of evening, so will see.

Weight:
Start 1/10/2018: 2... Wed, 17 Jan 2018 16:43:59 EST Changing it up in 2018 Fitness:
Okay, I joined a gym! The local one doesn't have fitness 'classes' just lots of equipment and great hours and a great rate. I paid a little extra per month and can have one guest go with me each visit, so the husband is in for going with me twice a week.
So, we signed up and started today!

SP world:
I'm also go to try and start blogging, simple tracking type blogs for myself and others if they so choose to find it interesting.

Food:
I felt... Wed, 10 Jan 2018 16:31:40 EST Trying something new.. Keto? Well, I know low-carb is probably best for my body (family with history of Type 2 Diabetes), but I know I'm not good at sticking to low carb. I'm wondering if a higher fat approach will help with craving issues?
I've only started reading up on it and getting some meal ideas on the Keto food approach.
I've started trying to eat that way today and went to the store and bought some healthy options.
No bread and sugar would be a good challenge for me.
The other aspect is I... Wed, 11 Oct 2017 15:36:14 EST Can I eat 10 days 'clean'? Well, I guess the answer is NO.
I just couldn't make it without some bread. I ate healthy options, but there comes a point during which I'm so busy with family and life, that my 'clean eating' options just can't fit the bill.
So I had some bread and soup over the weekend.
I've cut 95% of sugar out of my day.
I've eaten 80% 'clean' thus far.. with most days 100% clean based on the guidelines..
No dairy, no grains, no coffee, on beans, no sugar.

But as ... Mon, 25 Sep 2017 17:41:50 EST 10 days of clean eating starts today! So my Avocare herbal "cleanse" starts today.
It is a probiotic supplement in the morning followed by a fiber drink (physillium and chickory root mostly) then regular (CLEAN) eating during the day and a herbal supplement before bed (herbal ingredients).

Clean eating is basically paleo..
No dairy, grains, beans, sugar

No Coffee.. not no caffeine, just not coffee. Maybe because of the probiotics in the morning?
Anyway, I didn't by their caffeinated 'spark... Tue, 19 Sep 2017 12:19:58 EST Walk/Jog Sunday After my daughter's first soccer game on Saturday I realized both my kids could probably use a little more conditioning.. so I asked if she wanted to go run with me and the dog.
The jog out is tough because it is slightly up hill/incline.. and we did an out and back.
She ran ahead with the dog on the way out, and we only had to walk a little to let the dog sniff here and there (which gives me a chance to recover since I haven't been running in a while).
On the way back, I too... Mon, 11 Sep 2017 17:18:43 EST Starting a new plan Okay, so I have read bloggers who like the Avocare products, and my sister actually mentioned them recently. So through her I ordered the "herbal cleanse". IT isn't a 'cleanse' in the traditional meaning of the word. IT is a fiber and probiotic supplement the you add into your morning routine to help reset your digestive system.

I have a VERY slow metabolism, which means I have a VERY slow digestive system too (at least I equate the two). I have to eat HIGH fiber to have 'regular'... Fri, 8 Sep 2017 12:20:36 EST Commit to the process? I love reading other folks' blogs on SP, yet I'm so bad about blogging myself!
I'm going to commit to a new process to help me activate some weight loss, so here it goes.

Workouts: need to schedule and do it!
I did well while on work travel for the last two weeks of August, worked out almost every day alternating lifting weights one day, and walking and playing basketball (just shooting hoops can get the heart rateup!).
Now I'm home and kids just started back to s... Thu, 7 Sep 2017 15:41:13 EST 2 weeks on work travel.. how I'm doing Well, I often travel for work in the summer months.
I usually can get in exercise most days. However, this trip was so busy, I didn't workout at all! Bad me! However, eating was very controlled and there was very little sugar or treats involved.
I guess when I super busy, it keeps me distracted enough that I don't eat mindlessly (not that I ever thought I did that before, but coming to realize that maybe I do!)
However, while on this trip I have tried a few new supplements. ... Fri, 30 Jun 2017 12:28:04 EST Biggest Loser challenge Summer camp! Hey all,
Just a plug here as we are trying to recruit a few more folks for BLC summer camp.
BLC is a very supportive group with a variety of fun challenges both during the week and weekend to help you stay on track and focus on individual actions that can add up big for progress on the scale!

Come check it out! Summer camp is a great way to ease into a new SP challenge!

mmercamp
Thu, 4 May 2017 12:28:03 EST Inspiration to reclaim myself I've been off my workout routine for over a year! I'm working out here and there, but nothing routine like we used to do. 2015 May, ran a 1/2 marathon and got wicked Plantar Faciitis.. and had to cut out the running all together (after much trial and error). I was still doing bootcamp classes and other stuff, just not running.. then the late spring of 2016 bootcamp class fell apart (just co-workers working out together) and lots of summer travel.

I bought a the end of summer 2016 ... Wed, 22 Feb 2017 14:59:26 EST 2017 update This week I kick off a new round of Biggest Loser Challenge here on SP and 5% challenge..
It is truly a time for a change. I feel it mentally this time.
1. Healthy food choices
2. Activity daily, even if only getting in my steps
3. Add back in Strength training 2-3 times a week.
4. Declutter the house
5. Work on happy projects/hobbies that make me happy
6. Quality family time.

I think by focusing on these things, the weight will come off! <BR... Tue, 10 Jan 2017 16:04:58 EST What I'm doing, how I'm doing... Just a quick check in.. thought I would post about how I'm doing.
I've been really enjoying crossfit 3 times a week, but I have found it is difficult to squeeze in that third workout. So I'll probably only go twice a week. I'm starting my second 6 weeks there (using a groupon) and may consider joining as I really appreciate how strong I'm getting and I know my fitness levels are WAY better now.

We used to do bootcamp like classes here at work twice a week, but that has falle... Thu, 20 Oct 2016 16:13:48 EST Need your help! Wanted: ideas for mini-rewards for weightloss goals Okay, I'm trying to come up with some mini-rewards for weight loss goals.

I'm thinking of setting small increments of 4-5 lbs depending on where that puts the scale.

So far, I've come up with a couple of things I've been 'wanting' but don't really NEED.

1. Seahawks T-shirt
2. New Brooks running shoes (from outlet store so on the cheap).
3. New FitBit (thinking about upgrading to the Blaze with some black friday shopping?) but may put it as a big ... Thu, 22 Sep 2016 18:20:39 EST Workouts can be empowering! I've been getting back into the routine of the 4-5 day a week workout. Although I have started back with weekend morning runs (short distances until I get into the swing of things), I did miss last weekend due to early morning soccer games for the kids and general craziness.

However, I've started my third week of crossfit (got a groupon for a 6 week unlimited class) and plan on going 3 times this week. Previous 2 weeks only made it twice a week, which is probably best to ease into... Tue, 20 Sep 2016 17:18:55 EST My first crossfit class So, I bought a groupon for a crossfit near by..not the closest one to my house, but not bad either.
Yesterday was my first time.. and it was good. I was very nervous, it is a small place, lots of folks working out, I showed up early to sign a waiver, but then didn't know what to do.

The guy running the place got around to me and got me on a rowing machine to warm up.
Then some mobility moves to get the body ready for a workout (some stretching).
Then some 'warm up... Wed, 7 Sep 2016 14:56:43 EST Time for a change! The kids started school today! And although I'm sorry to see the end of carefree summer (for them, I still have to work), getting back to a routine is good.

I started back to a weekend run/walk routine. I start off walking, then warm up into a jog/run. (never been a fast runner so I guess the technical term is job?:)

AND, I am going to start my groupon classes for a crossfit gym. 6 weeks of unlimited classes. I'm going to aim for 3 a week at a minimum. I will see how ex... Tue, 6 Sep 2016 13:27:16 EST Veggies for the win! and planning for a work trip Okay, adding in more veggies for the win! And a fruit or two. I usually have 1 fruit a day and veggies at every meal, however, I'm trying to make at least half the plate veggies not just for me, but the whole family!

I'm about to leave on a 2 week work trip to Barrow, AK.. produce there is EXPENSIVE and often not the freshest.
I usually take a box of salad or spinach and other stuff.
That will be the plan again.. pack in my own veggies and healthy choices and eat clea... Thu, 28 Jul 2016 12:20:56 EST Middle of July and a new mindset I enjoyed a nice 2 week vacation back home in TX with my kids, visiting with my mom and sisters (not to mention the BIG family reunion with the cousins and aunts with 4 days on the lake at cabins and shared meals)

I've gained weight, back to above my starting point (around 2008, one year after my daughter was born).. I've been set solidly at 201-203 for a while now.

My new mindset? I'm going to lose weight.
How? Simple:
1. I'm going to work out consistently ... Thu, 14 Jul 2016 18:26:14 EST Where I'm at Well, I biked to work 3 days a week for the month of May. I had work travel for the first two weeks of June and went for morning walks with my co-worker who is a speedy little walker, so I had to actually 'try'.
Got home June 10 and was busy with end of school stuff with my kids and busy with work stuff hosting a visiting student and all the work that goes along coming back from a work trip where we collected data for two weeks! (that is the main aspect of my job, this data we spent two... Tue, 28 Jun 2016 12:19:02 EST What it's like to bike to work for commute When we bought our house 13 years ago, one of the added bonuses was it was close to the Burke Gilman trail along Lake Washington.

Over the years as I signed up for race events (especially sprint triathlons) I've used the trail for training and the occasional commute. I would often, drive in with my bike, bike home, bike back the next day and drive home as a strategy to get used to the bike commute.

2 years ago the trail was under some reconstruction and had a wicked de... Tue, 17 May 2016 16:27:45 EST Slow, but moving! Two things:
Went for a run outside yesterday for the first time in a long time.
I had done a "walk/run" a couple of weeks before one evening during my daughters dance class. It had felt good, but on this Tuesday I just didn't have the energy and only walked.
Yesterday mid morning, I felt pretty good.. like.. I should get out there.
So I did! slow, but moving.. The feet felt fine during the run. the Plantar Fasciitis is still there, but not major pains, just a 'tired' fe... Thu, 21 Apr 2016 14:36:32 EST Carb splurge ends this morning! Hi there,
I've been working SO hard on keeping the carbs to under 100 grams a day. I caved the other night and had a whole wheat toast and hot chocolate milk. I just needed a few more calories and a 'treat'. Then yesterday my husband made a peanut butter pie.. cool whip with peanut butter in a graham cracker crust.. I had a small piece! sugar! yikes! I tracked it, but not on the low carb menu!
I'm in two challenges here on SP land.. 5% challenge weighs in on Saturdays.. and BLC on ... Fri, 1 Apr 2016 12:08:05 EST Eating in range and focusing on protein Hope everyone had a great Easter weekend!
I spent last week really focusing on low carb (around 100 grams) and high protein (aroudn 120-130 grams) as a way to see if my body would respond.
I think mid week the scale was looking better.. maybe less bloat for me.

I got in some good workouts and was super busy at work racking up 11K + steps most days!!

However this weekend I let the carbs back into the diet.. but tried hard to stay in calorie range.

... Mon, 28 Mar 2016 13:09:55 EST Can't seem to get the scale to move (in right direction).. but. That doesn't mean I will stop trying.
Logging my food,
logging my exercise.

Making changes to diet:
getting protein up towards 100 grams
keeping carbs around 150.
Getting in fiber at 35 gms a day.
Fresh fruits and veggies 5+ a day.

Slowly adding in more intense workouts..
treadmill run/walks once a week (Mondays)
outdoor run/walk once a week (Saturdays)
ST/interval workouts (Tues/Thurs).
ST weights at home (... Thu, 17 Mar 2016 12:46:47 EST Back to running? maybe!! Okay, so I've been a chubby 'runner' for about 8 years. I've logged a few races and marked off some major bucket list races along the way..
But last May's 1/2 marathon came at a cost. Plantar Fasciitis.

Even though I followed a well laid out training plan and having started from a good solid mileage base, I noticed my feet hurting in the mornings about a month before the race.

So, I did what I could to keep them happy and backed off from running after the race in... Mon, 14 Mar 2016 14:55:03 EST Really working on it Well, I'm REALLY working on it.. everything really.
Tracking my food.
Tracking my carbs, protein, and fiber.
Tracking my steps (thanks fit bit).
Tracking my exercise (thanks to co-workers lunchtime workouts, some own workouts on my own etc.. and that dang fit bit! :)
Tracking my weight. I have a Wednesday weigh-in for the BLC30 here on SP and a Saturday weigh-in for my Starfish 5% challenge, so I'm really having to watch my sodium, activity levels and food choices... Wed, 3 Feb 2016 12:58:55 EST Getting back into an exercise routine I've been off routine for a while starting in May after my half marathon.. work travel 2 weeks away 3 out of 4 months July-Sept plus Plantar Faciitis in my feet means I didn't even try much.
So, back to routine has been hard. Our bootcamp class has fizzled over the summer with all our travel (our instructor also travels for work and is a co-worker too). So now we are trying to get back into the swing of things we are going for shorter more intense workouts.
I put together this Tab... Tue, 17 Nov 2015 16:10:48 EST Joining the 30 Day #Find30 Holiday challenge on SP.. who wants to join Okay, I've been off my regular workout routine all summer since running a half marathon in May. Plantar Fasciitis hasn't helped and it hasn't gone away by cutting back in workouts.

SO, I'm going to get back into it by joining the 30 minute a day challenge.

-challenge.asp?calendar=16

Hope this link works.
it said to find a friend!
Well, who's in it with me!
I'll post a blog a day after my workouts, even... Mon, 2 Nov 2015 17:11:05 EST Where did October go? Hello! It is almost the end of did that happen? Oh yeah.. life work, sleep, wake, eat, etc..
I had to see a new Dr. with my new insurance for my usual prescription. My BMI is not in a good range, so she asked if I would like to see a Nutritionist.. I've been to two appointments now. Here are my strategies:

Lower carbs: 35-45 grams, Breakfast and Lunch, 30 grams Dinner, and only 15 grams with 2 snacks a day.
MORE Protein.

That has been challenging... Tue, 27 Oct 2015 16:22:06 EST Post Summer update Hello! It has been a while since I've checked in. I've had a busy summer with travel for work.

My PF in my foot is still bothering me. Seems like only one foot is really bothersome, whereas before it was both. I got some new tools to help (brace to sleep with at night and shoe inserts) as well as I'm trying to roll, stretch etc more often.
So I haven't been running at all. I did some elliptical while on work travel and I've been walking lately with the dog and kids. I need t... Tue, 29 Sep 2015 13:43:45 EST Changes in Thyroid medications and meeting with new Dr. I changed health insurance and HAD to go see my new doctor in order to fill my prescription for my thyroid medication.
I take Armour (spelling?) thyroid, but this Dr recommended the synthetically produced thyroid because it can be a guaranteed dosage whereas the natural thyroid can be variable.
So I will be making the switch tomorrow and go back in 6 weeks and see what my levels are.

Interestingly enough, it was the first time I got a little push back on taking thyroid... Thu, 20 Aug 2015 15:10:27 EST So I started working out again.. with intent 1/2 of July was vacation, so no workouts. Although it was only about 11 days of vacation, the preparation before and after meant I didn't get workouts in.

The second 1/2 of July I was on work travel, BUT I went to the gym pretty much every other day and did either elliptical 30-40 mins and/or weights.

But, I got home and the first 1/2 of August, I only did a little of this and a little of that.. not much at all really. The PF in my feet was my excuse, busy, tired, what... Wed, 19 Aug 2015 12:35:14 EST Restart, from the beginning I'm sure several of us have been down this road before.. lose 10 lbs, gain it back..or lose 20-25 lbs and slowly gain it back.
From 2009- April 2011, I made slow but steady progress DOWN.. from the high 180s to the low 160s, even seeing the 150s briefly.
Then June 2011- Sept 2012, I went from happy 161/162 to 168.. no biggie right? not too bad..
Sept 2012-March 2013, up to 173.. I came back down to 170 near the later half of 2013 and was good there.. and you know what.. <BR... Tue, 18 Aug 2015 18:32:48 EST Extra Credit workout or just scratching the surface? So, due to training schedule this winter/spring, I was running on Saturday mornings and resting on Fridays. Wednesdays are a default rest day due to busy busy schedule..
However, I ran my race on May 10th, and now I don't HAVE to run on Saturdays.. and I find myself NOT running on Saturdays.. If you read my previous blog, you know I am active, busy, and productive on the weekends, so there is some merit to not having a scheduled fitness day on the weekends.
So this week, I dusted o... Fri, 29 May 2015 16:59:06 EST what a 'workout' free weekend looks like.. So after 4 long months of long runs on the weekends to train for a 1/2 marathon.. I suddenly find myself with little to NO motivation to continue long run Saturdays. EVEN though I really think I should/could be doing an 'easy' maintenance run of 6-8 miles without being completely exhausted and tired the rest of the day (the real problem with longer training runs in my book, is the total lack of energy the rest of the day!)

So, this long 3 day weekend, I had planned to do my runs/wo... Tue, 26 May 2015 13:57:50 EST The struggle continues I like to read SP emails in the morning and click on any links I think I might enjoy.
This morning lead me to PIXIE-LICIOUS and her highlighted post.. and it really resonated with me.

urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=5927543&u
tm_source=sparkpeople&utm_medium=email
&utm_campaign=best-of-sparkpeople

We all struggle.. I'm struggling too. I'm 8 lbs away from my 'starting' weight after having baby #2! 8 years a... Thu, 14 May 2015 12:38:04 EST Mother's day Half Marathon Well, I ran my second ever half-marathon yesterday. About 7 years after running my first one (which was when I first started running with a 6 month training plan).

Going into it, I knew I could have a better finishing time since that first 1/2 so long ago, so I didn't have to worry about that. I had my 'half' from last year's full marathon as a guideline which was a 2:25:27 finish for a 11:06 m/m pace.
I remember feel 'great' crossing that 1/2 way point last year.
<BR... Mon, 11 May 2015 13:31:26 EST weight loss and watching the scale Well, I've been a lot better about not weighing in as often..
I often forget in fact, so I weighed last Friday after my long run.. saw a nice low number (as to be expected due to sweat etc), so in some ways, I expect to see a similar number if I've been good about my sodium etc!

Which I haven't been lately, mainly because I've been eating canned beans with lunches.. but I've been doing well in overall nutrition, just not watching my sodium.

So I took a quick show... Thu, 30 Apr 2015 13:10:32 EST My Long run was Friday and Birthday weekend Hi there, I had a birthday on Saturday, so I knew I would prefer to get my long training run in on Friday. My volunteering in Kid#1 class was cancelled so the stars aligned and I went for a run. It was supposed to be 11 miles, but having been off a little in my training and then a particularly heavy leg workout week in bootcamp, I ended up running 10.75.. very slowly!

Lesson #1. Rest day before long run day is essential to a good workout!
My legs were SO tired! YIKES!
<B... Mon, 27 Apr 2015 14:40:20 EST time to play catch up Okay, had another week 'off' . Spring break with the kids. I had planned to go running and it just didn't workout. I was actually trying to get some work done in the mornings and afternoons so I could bill 1/2 days and not use up my vacation. That coupled with my beautiful location (that didn't lend itself to easy running routes) means I just full on flaked and shrugged off the running/training I was SUPPOSED to be doing.

Add to that I had a major cold last week and didn't hardly ... Mon, 20 Apr 2015 12:43:52 EST Another cold.. Blerg! Yep, another cold.. thankfully not as bad as last time (yet). Felt it coming on yesterday and hit me hard in the evening.. but slept pretty good and ended up feeling a bit better this morning, although the full effects in my sinuses (stuffy AND runny nose) are present.
Healthy lifestyle, eat right, exercise, rest right too, vitamins, hydrate.. and have elementary school age kids.. who get colds and no matter how hard I try not to share drinks or eat after each other, I get the cold.. bl... Tue, 7 Apr 2015 13:40:32 EST What do you think about 'easy' cardio HI there,
I was wondering what people think of 'easy' cardio. Here is what I mean.
I walk my 12 year old dog, and let her sniff to her hearts content and we are slow (usually), so only I don't usually count that as 'fitness'.
But yesterday I already had a bootcamp class workout (although I went a bit easier as I'm getting over a cold) and then I did what I like to call 'easy' cardio at the gym while my daughter was in class.

Elliptical, while flipping through a m... Wed, 18 Mar 2015 12:49:26 EST Do you get your 5 Fruits/Veggies a Day? Wondering how many of us get our 5 servings in?

Mine look like this
2 large mushrooms and a handful of kale or spinach with the morning eggs = I'm counting as 1 serving

1 Apple
1 Banana
Sometime during the day, one is usually mid-morning snack with some almonds pre-workout. Other is a post lunch snack.

Lunch has a veggie: Today handful of spinach with meatloaf.. but is that a full serving?

1.5 cup of strawberries, so let's count t... Mon, 9 Mar 2015 18:14:52 EST Calculating Calories burned and Differentials Well, I'm happy to report that I've been tracking my food 7 days a week thanks to the Spark App on my phone! I've also added in little workouts/chores, to chart some calories burned so I could look at the Charts on the app, showing the difference between calorie consumed and calories burned.

You know what.. it so isn't working.
I tried pretty hard to be accurate with my food choices in the tracker, and try to err on the side of 1.5 serving or what not based on what I actuall... Thu, 12 Feb 2015 17:33:22 EST TGIF and dealing with the ho-hums Well, yes, this week has been a bit slumpy because I've had a cold. I went to workout at bootcamp yesterday and mentioned my blahs and someone suggested maybe I try a SAD light therapy. A good friend of one uses it every morning and says it is like a shot of espresso?!?

I was pondering myself on my drive home last night and thought I might be in a depressive funk. I have also considered that my thyroid is off too, but won't be able to check those levels until my yearly check up in ... Fri, 6 Feb 2015 12:34:06 EST Some changes that seem to be working I've made a few tweaks to my nutrition and fitness plan and I'm seeing some progression on the scale! Finally in the right direction!

Lunches have included a big bed of greens with lentils. I was in a rush and didn't have time to really make the lentils super yummy, but added some spices when I package it up for lunch and tasting pretty good. I need to keep the flavors yummy so I don't get bored!

Protein Special K cereal and snack bars (only 110 calories). For in a pinc... Fri, 23 Jan 2015 12:34:56 EST hey I tracked my food yesterday! Yay! I tracked my food up to the late afternoon and although I was already at 1300 calories, I opted for another snack (Kind bar 190 calories). I was just feeling a little off and not sure what that was about.

I got home and had a light dinner but my main course option was more caloric than I had first thought! Always pays to read the nutritional information first! BUT although I ate in the 2000 calorie range, I knew it going into it and that was okay.

However, it lead... Tue, 13 Jan 2015 13:32:11 EST A hard look at the year I gained 20 lbs.. (aka 2014) Yikes! that is right. I gained about 20 lbs this year! I pulled out my new calendar to replace my 'weigh-in' calendar in the bathroom. I scanned back over 2014.. not a good year for me.

the worst part?
