SEASPIRIT1's SparkPeople Blog SEASPIRIT1's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Another new week I'm 52 this year and it's my plan to spend the 52 weeks of this year trying new things. And with a goal of losing weight and regaining my health ~ every healthy week is a positive week in my books.
I've experienced extreme weight loss, sought a quick fix solution in the form of packaged meals and meal replacements. It worked....temporarily. Live and Learn.
So I'm clearing out all of the old notes in my spark page, resetting my goals and I'm going to try to use this as a tool to help... Sun, 28 Aug 2016 07:26:49 EST Monday morning starting with a roll.... First thing I did when I woke up was to throw on some cycling shorts and a light jacket!!! Fed the dog and out the door I went to GET BACK ON MY BIKE!!!!
Not expecting to be able to manage anything monumental ~ I aimed to simply have a quick ride around my neighborhood (which turned out to be about 3km). Ten minutes later I'm in the house having breakfast!
Okay so tomorrow I'll aim a bit higher!
Today's plans are filled with fitness activities so I'm not too "underwhelmed" with... Growing up in the Okanagan I was a "beach bum" and belonged to the baby oil generation of sun tanners.....
Ok I know better now.....but for most of my adult life I've been too heavy to sit outside comfortably for even the shortest time. Totally intolerant of the heat and sun!
Ah fast forward.....
Here I am still only 2lbs away from my goal weight of having lost 100lbs (posted that yesterday)....but revelling in the fact that I am thoroughly enjoying having a bathing suit and sh... I began my journey so looong ago.
I'm 49 years old.
I "settled" into bad eating habits when I started my post secondary education and those habits stayed with me for most of my adult life.
For whatever reason this time I'm actually gaining ground!
Determination?
Time to myself?
Whatever the change I'm so glad it's here......
I now eat low carb meals, gluten and refined sugars are out of my diet (for that matter anything refined is out of my diet)
I drin... Sat, 20 Jul 2013 13:07:28 EST Painting in the sunshine :) Love the summer weather....what a treat to haul my easel outside and paint in the shade of the tree just off of our back deck!
Granted the acrylic paints dry almost instantley and I'm constantly "spritzing" the paint with a water bottle...but oh is it worth it!
I'm just waiting for an underpainting to dry so that I can start adding glaze layers to it!
Later this afternoon I'm off to the beach for a paddle..... I really need to find (or start) a SUP team!!
Tomorrow morning ... Thu, 18 Jul 2013 17:59:35 EST Setting distance goals.... On Monday afternoon I had my husband drop me off at a nearby beach with the paddle board. Then he drove to the beach I had set as my destination and set up our dinner picnic!
The distance?
5 km!
The time?
50 minutes!
My legs were tired, my arms were tired, but boy did it feel good!
I stayed close enough to shore that I could always see the bottom and it is so amazing the wildlife that lives in the tidal zone!
I am totally addicted to this new sport (to the p... Wed, 17 Jul 2013 13:20:43 EST Anaesthesia really takes it's toll! I went in for day surgery on Monday and I'm just feeling "human" this morning! I can't get over how anaesthesia knocks you for a loop for a few days!
Now granted I also know that I've been recuperating from my surgery (and am feeling better today in that regard as well).... but ugh the last few days I've felt subterranean! Lots of naps, lots of "chilling out"...
This morning I noticed the difference purely from the fact that I woke up not feeling tired!
The morning is really c... Thu, 11 Jul 2013 10:25:47 EST An amazing paddling adventure!!!! Yesterday morning my mum and I set out to one of our local beaches to take the kayak and paddle board out for a bit.
We had been on the water for about 30 minutes when all of a sudden I heard a "whoosh" of air right beside me!!!
There was a pod of dolphins that had come in close to shore to feed!
The best part was that several of them moved towards us and then began to swim around us!!!! One even swam in between the kayak and the paddle board!!!
They were within 10 feet of... Mon, 8 Jul 2013 07:30:01 EST Soooo close to my first goal ~things that I've learned so far.... I began my weight loss journey mid October last year.
Weighing 288lbs I decided enough was enough!
I rejoined spark people to help me continue with my weight loss and connect with others who are also on the path to healthier lifestyles!
This morning I weighed in at 194lbs!
I have 6 lbs left to reach my first goal! Fri, 5 Jul 2013 13:48:22 EST Trying out the new paddleboard! My mum and I went in together and bought a stand up paddleboard.
This afternoon was our chance to go out and give it a go!!!!
I've been hooked on SUP for awhile now and have been itching to buy one (but it just wasn't quite in my budget!).
Mum has been itching to try it and is convinced that because her 2 daughters love it that she would too..... so we combined our resources and shared the cost of one!
It was priceless listening to my mum this afternoon (her first time pa... Wed, 3 Jul 2013 22:16:19 EST Allergies reeking havoc ~ Argh!! I can't get over how much my allergies impact my outdoor activities! When it's hot out and breezy I seem to suffer more (the pollen factory outside really lets loose in those conditions!)
It seems that to gain relief I need to head to the ocean where the effects are still there (just not as bad for whatever reason!)
So this afternoon, unless the waves are too tall from the wind, I'm going to take our SUP down to the beach and go paddling for a couple of hours.
I use all manners... Wed, 3 Jul 2013 13:51:41 EST Happy Canada Day! It's an absolutely beautiful morning here on the West Coast ~ a great day to go out and celebrate! This is one of those action packed weekends where there is plenty to do and not enough hours in the day for all of the choices! Yesterday I was one of the judges at the annual carving contest...(chainsaws, massive chunks of wood, talented individuals, novices and professionals!) After meeting with all of the artisans, and hearing about their visions and challenges, thankfully there were 4 other... Mon, 1 Jul 2013 11:46:44 EST Finished the school onto summer holidays and my own schedule!! Oh I soooo look forward to summer holidays! Where I can ignore clocks, not have a schedule timed to bells and set my own daily agenda according to my own whims!
The first week off is always destined for sleeping when I need to, reading to my heart's content and setting my house to order (spring cleaning but during the first week of summer holidays). The act of chasing out the dust bunnies always makes me feel "settled"....
During this coming week I will also build the stretcher fram... Sat, 29 Jun 2013 00:14:19 EST Remembering the importance of taking a day of rest from exercise. I was up to my neck cleaning out my art classroom today! It's amazing what can accumulate after a year! Recycling, purging, sorting, organizing, reclaiming.... you name it I was doing it today! There is something to be said about making a mess to clean a mess.....
This included reclaiming over 200lbs of dry clay!
By 1:30 I was feeling it in my sciatic... an area that I have been careful to heal as I really suffered from sciatic pain through the Christmas holidays. By 2:30 this after... Mon, 24 Jun 2013 21:51:04 EST A 12km ride this morning to wear off the birthday cake!! I had such a lovely day yesterday for my birthday!
I went for an hour of Zumba early in the morning, then came home to have breakfast and my mum came over with a "cleaner, low-cal" version of what used to be my "traditional birthday cake" (Dark Chocolate Cheesecake!) YUM! ~the new revised version of my favorite cake was absolutely devine!!!!! (Thanks mum!)
Just after lunch I drove downtown to our large city park where all of the grads were gathered prior to the prom last night (in a... Sun, 23 Jun 2013 12:40:45 EST 49 TODAY!! Tomorrow is my 49th birthday!
I woke up this morning and realized that I really have shifted my thinking towards the healthier lifestyle that I'm working on.
Prior to this year I would have spent time trying to decide what kind of birthday supper I wanted to indulge myself with.
This year I realized this morning that my focus hasn't once gone towards the decadent food realm..... Instead for the last couple of weeks I've been exploring what I could do for a healthy activity for ... Fri, 21 Jun 2013 08:49:20 EST Feeling the change in my muscle tone...I'm not as "jiggly". I've been working really hard since the 10th to reset my fitness goals. I've started attending a new cardio class (kickboxing) (which I love)....whoo baby do you sweat in that class! I'm still going to Zumba (which I also I can be as uncoordinated in that class as I want and still move to great music!) I've gone for several great hour long walks with my husband and I've conquered a new cycling route that has a massively long tapered uphill grind at the beginning! (Tis just over 12km... Wed, 19 Jun 2013 22:35:39 EST Accomplishing goals set! I woke up determined to accomplish 2 of my goals.
Eat smart.
Exercise.
I packed a nutritious lunch, ate a decent breakfast and created a monster salad for dinner! Fruit salad for desert too (Yum!)
And even though I had one of those days where I could have had a nap...I managed to go to a kickboxing class before dinner!
Ok....tomorrow I need to make sure my water intake is up! And a repeat of today will be just the ticket! Mon, 17 Jun 2013 23:40:58 EST Early morning exercise! There's nothing like getting outdoors and being active on a beautiful June morning!
I just finished a great bike ride where at the start of the ride is a loooong uphill grind (and I did it in 13 min!).... It was a great ride as the home stretch is along the ocean, there was hardly any traffic and bugs.....AND I managed the 12.24 km ride in 41 minutes! Whoo Baby I'm proud of myself! Time for breakfast!
I've had 4 glasses of water so far, my energy is up and I'm going to head out shop... Sun, 16 Jun 2013 12:27:30 EST Needing to change my food attitude.... I am really "derailing" concerning my food choices. Had a bad day food wise even though I went and worked out hard at the gym this morning.
It was a day of sabotage and giving up. I know that I will have days like this and that I really consciously need to make good decisions concerning my food intake....but when I make bad choices I really make bad choices.
One part is emotional eating.
Recognized this....and will always struggle with this.
One part is the cravings that c... Sat, 15 Jun 2013 08:06:24 EST back to back workouts and hitting the "reset" button! Last week I would say was a bit of a disaster....emotional eating, very little exercise...and overall just a big ol pity party happening with a good dose of guilt thrown into the mix!
So this weekend I hit the reset button ~ my husband and I walked along the ocean for an hour on Saturday night and then yesterday we went for a hike down through Seal Bay park for an hour. Both wonderful treks along the water and through green woods...perfect for finding balance once again!
Tonight I r... Mon, 10 Jun 2013 23:10:32 EST Hiking on a Sunday afternoon! Pure luxury!
It's a high overcast day with a light breeze ~ a day where a hike through the woods will be comfortable and not too hot! Sun, 9 Jun 2013 13:30:00 EST Organizing my life one day at a time.... It happens every year at this time.... Chaos reigns!
So I've started organizing my life.... and literally I'm doing it one day at a time!
I'm tackling small areas that have become "collection zones" and at the same time I'm trying to keep a schedule where I have energy to go to a workout after my work day!
Last night I had full intentions to go to a kickbox class but the weather was so mild that my husband and I decided to take advantage of the evening and we went to the beach... Wed, 5 Jun 2013 10:34:01 EST Energy levels and gluten intake...coincidental? Since I've reintroduced gluten back into my diet I've noticed I've been more lethargic.
Is it coincidental? Or is the tiredness due to the annual end of the school year exhaustion that I normally face?
Today I "weaned" back my gluten intake...tomorrow I'm going to eliminate it once again completely. We'll see how my energy levels respond... hopefully for the better!
I really had to push myself out the door this evening to attend an aerobics class (and I did...and I feel better ... Love it!
Over the last 2 weeks I've managed to lose a total of 5 inches from the key areas that I track!
(Hips, waist, bust, thighs and upper arm)
That is such an affirmation that the exercising that I've been doing is actually building muscle and changing my body mass!
And the best part is that I noticed the major change in my waist/hip zone because my clothes were "hanging" off of the point where I need to either get my skirts and pants altered or I need to go t... Well today I made it to the t... Sun, 26 May 2013 16:36:06 EST Exercise is a sure cure for the "frumpies" I went to bed last night feeling "frumpy" ~ I'm sure it's because of my food choices over the course of the last week... and I'm sure that mentally my head was saying whoa!!
In fact I ended waking up in the middle of the night (first time in a long time) and I'm sure it's connected to the food I ate at dinner!!!
So this morning with the sunrise I pulled on my exercise gear and went into the gym for an hour of Zumba! The instructor that gives this session is a dynamo and you really w... Sat, 25 May 2013 13:51:24 EST Full moon, Friday and tea at the beach..... He had quit his pack a day smoking habit along with the changes and WOW! What a transf... Tue, 21 May 2013 12:11:01 EST The importance of telling others about our goals... Goals are a good thing to set.
Goals provide us with direction, purpose and accountability.
I've read (and been told) that if we write our goals, tell someone about our goals versus keep them to ourselves ~ we will be more likely to achieve reaching the goal!
~And yes I believe this is true!
I set a goal of losing 100 - 110 lbs for myself. Thu, 9 May 2013 09:51:39 EST Eating Habits, Habits of the Mind, Daily Activity Habits.... My weight loss journey has been more than the "numbers on the scale"...but I have to say that those numbers staying in one place for a while sure does something to your mindset!
This morning tho it changed!
I can look at this logically and with reasoning about the last couple of weeks:
I had stopped the program that I was following so that I could increase my activity levels (it was a low, low calorie program).
