SCHNOOTIE's SparkPeople Blog SCHNOOTIE's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Do dreams mean something? I had a dream the other day about giving birth to a 3 year old baby with square little tribal tattoos all down his/her back of the neck. The kid was pleasant, so I decided to keep it. :) Hubby was all for it too. I didn't tell my friend about the dream until we had lunch the other day. She tends to have intense dreams, some of which come true. She told me about a dream about goblins she had that all ran around with weird little outfits on with square little markings on them. I asked what exac... Mon, 2 Sep 2013 10:35:33 EST Frankie Goes To Hollywood Hula Hoop Just the other day I was driving home from work and I dug through my long forgotten CD collection in my car. Frankie Goes to Hollywood was at the top of the pile, lol. When I was in my teens and thought I had weight problems (don't all teenagers feel that way?) I had vowed to work out by doing the Hula Hoop every day to the first song on the Frankie Goes to Hollywood Debut album. It is Welcome to the Pleasure Dome, but an extended version with bird sounds, chaca-chaca percussion, Background l... Sun, 1 Sep 2013 09:58:56 EST Small changes, big results..... So, I am on the Traveler team again for the 5% Spring challenge. What a fantastic team that is!!!

Counting my successes:

~ doing a small, time efficient strength training routine every few days
~ speed walking at least 15 minutes on most of my lunch breaks in the nearby park
~ packing a simple, healthy lunch whole wheat bread, cube of cheese, baby carrots and apple (one of my favorite meals, simple finger food and so good for you)
~ Kind nut bars as snack... Sat, 18 May 2013 14:52:33 EST Great, great blog to inspire all of us to create our own SparkVillage
ournal.asp?id=MOSTMOM1

Read it and see what you think. I am just amazed at the wonderful possibilities that this lovely woman opened up. I am much the same, a SparkStalker, always looking to connect with people but then not exactly knowing how to keep it up. Well, there is such strength in numbers, I am in the process of building my own village.

Tue, 30 Apr 2013 17:46:48 EST Why the 5% Spring into Summer Challenge? The answer is simple. I might not always be the best at being accountable, but this challenge offers so many different teams people can be assigned to. In my case it it the Casual Travelers, a team made up of people like me, some are struggling, some have physical problems and can't compete like they would in other teams. The support is amazing and the people are all following the same goal. There is understanding, forgiveness, motivation. :)

Check it out and sign up. This will be ... Mon, 22 Apr 2013 11:14:04 EST Ninja Fruits and Vegetables

svegetables/results/women.html?age=43&
gender=female&activity=sed

So according to this amazing fruit and vegetable amount calculator, I should eat 1 1/2 cups of fruits and 2 1/2 cups of veggies every day. I love that I now have an amount to strive for. That 5-9 servings stuff really tends to push me over the edge. I like to know details that are more reasonable than that. I like it easy. And telling me in cups is very kind... Sun, 14 Apr 2013 13:25:23 EST A beautiful morning......and scale stepups.... I love Saturday mornings when my hubby is working night shift. I know he will come home with an egg sandwich made to order by the little food trailer he passes on his way home. And a tall cup of milk coffee. And he brings it right to my bed. So I usually wake up early on Saturdays and get online, play around, watch a little show or two and just wait. Today since my Traveler friends inspired me to get back into working out and I have actually put in more workout time than I was able to since t... Sat, 13 Apr 2013 07:36:48 EST New job and no more puppies!!!! This is the beginning..... of the end of my Kennel Worker career. My knees have become so busted that I have now started my transition from Kennels to Reception at the Veterinary Clinic I work for. I already got to split my time between both departments, the harder Kennel part of the day I spent up at Reception and then got to go to Kennels afterwards. My boss/best friend from Kennels and I had this understanding that if I can't to the job any longer, I would just be transferred to Reception ... Sat, 23 Mar 2013 10:51:31 EST No energy blog :) I am a bit low on energy these days. Work has taken a toll on me. We are in the process of hiring more staff for Kennels so we can get ready for Easter. We have great people working there, the best team I have ever had the pleasure to work with. But just not enough of them. So my boss is interviewing more people. They have to be caring, mulititasking, team work oriented and most of all able to follow all protocols to a T. We don't kid around. Animal care is first priority at all times, we eve... Mon, 11 Mar 2013 21:35:46 EST 70% or MOST days is enough. Let's celebrate! So I have dreaded this mornings weigh in just to find out I lost another pound since last week. Then I thought "How is that possible? I didn't even put 100% in.... maybe 70%". Which lead me to the decision to blog about 70%.

What did I do to lose that pound?
- I ate a healthy breakfast most mornings.... oatmeal with flaxseed and fruit
- I packed a healthy lunch most days..... quinoa with fresh veggies and balsamico vinegar or brown rice with veggies or whole grain pasta... Sat, 9 Mar 2013 12:39:52 EST Casual Traveler Blog Question #7 7) Anything else you would like to share with your Team

Let's pretend I didn't do so well the last few days. Let's just say I might not have stuck to my water drinking as I should, or possibly I made some bad choices when it comes to food and snacking. Let's say my left knee is finally coming to an end and I mourn it with lack of movement. Let's pretend for a little while that 's what it is.
So now that we pretended for a bit, here are the facts. If I don't drink my water, I ... Fri, 8 Mar 2013 23:38:04 EST Casual Traveler Blog Question #6 Do I need some motivation or advice?

At this point, I really don't for my water drinking. I just gotta do it. There is no great magic to it Simple. Pick up that glass of water and drink it. Gulp. Although I tremendously enjoy any input and the motivation in general that I have been getting from the Team. There a lot of great people there :) Thu, 7 Mar 2013 22:54:27 EST Casual Traveler Blog Question #5 5) What can you improve upon (in drinking your water)?

Definitely DRINKING it, lol. I found that adding something, anything makes my water more tasty and interesting and I am more inclined to reach for it more often. I also can improve in taking my water bottle everywhere. I am doing well at home, I even add a little wine to the 32 oz. of water, or cranberry juice, apple juice or lemon juice. I keep it interesting and tasty. So i can improve on getting inventive and keeping my wate... Wed, 6 Mar 2013 19:24:15 EST Casual Traveler Blog Question #4 4) How are you doing day by day? (with the game plan of drinking 84 oz. per day)

Well, I am trying very hard to get my water in. I found that I can drink 8 oz. in the morning and my cup of coffee and I won't need a bathroom break on my way to work. Since work is extremely busy most of the time, which is great because time just flies, I forgot to drink my water today until lunch time. And then I drank the rest of my day water on the way home. It still leaves me with 32 oz. for this ... Tue, 5 Mar 2013 19:17:02 EST Casual Traveler Blog Question #3 3) What are you doing to encourage yourself and keep on track? (for drinking my 84 oz. of water each day)

Here is what I have done today.... I did what I said, I filled my 20 oz. bottle and drank that before leaving for work at 6:20. I had not really thought that through.... I have a 40 minute drive to work and boy did I have to pee when I got to work. I might have to cut that down to 8 oz. for breakfast, lol. Otherwise I might need diapers. Anyway.... I drank my 32 oz. before I le... Mon, 4 Mar 2013 19:56:16 EST Casual Traveler Blog Question #2 2) How will you do that? (getting my amount of water in every day)

Well thanks to my Sparkly Friends there were lots of great suggestions and helpful hints on my Blog Question #1. My plan is to get myself some Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar. I noticed that if fill my 20 oz. Water bottle in the morning and add 1 Tablespoon of Cider Vinegar, I will drink this with great joy first thing in the morning. I know it is probably a mind trick of sorts, but I read so much about the health benef... Sun, 3 Mar 2013 08:24:12 EST Casual Traveler Blog Question #1 1) What new habit you wish to develop?

I have been at odds with the water consumption. I have to consciously remind myself to drink my water. Coffee and tea is not the issue, I drink those every day, but plain simple, clear, cool wonderful water? Not so much. I leave too much for the end of the day, and as you all guessed it..... 40 oz. before bedtime just isn't a smart idea, lol. It does give me a walking workout throughout the night, but I hear getting a good night sleep is just... Sat, 2 Mar 2013 13:30:35 EST Small successes!! Here is what I did today.....
I still tracked my food, i went out to Denny's and had a nice healthy lunch with a friend (yeah, I know, it's Denny's but I had the light fare with loads of veggies).
I had whole wheat spaghetti with a tiny bit of marinara sauce and a big plate of raw veggies for dinner. And I didn't have seconds. There, I can make good choices, one meal at a time :)
I will celebrate every little tiny victory and so you all know how determined I am to make healthy... Thu, 28 Feb 2013 23:01:22 EST What to do when the body just doesn't play nice? My left knee cap has a life of its own. Right now it has found the company of a fair amount of water. I suppose it didn't want to be alone or maybe it just wanted a change of scenery and water seems like a good vacation spot. And it may or may not hurt excruciatingly when I walk too fast. So now I am in a real pickle. I spend all day working standing and walking. The first 4 hours of my work day are reception work, where I can pace myself better. Standing is much better than sitting, so I am ... Mon, 25 Feb 2013 21:34:52 EST Gotta add up what you did well!! With company this weekend, it was not at all easy to do well on everything. So in order to avoid feeling bad about the bad choices, and therefore making more bad ones, I will list all the things I did well.....

- I had a lot of water on Saturday
- I tracked all my food, regardless of what I ate
- I went to bed when I was tired
- I did little moving breaks in between, even if it was only for a few knee raises
- when I was tired tonight, I logged on to Spark and m... Sun, 24 Feb 2013 21:30:02 EST My Casual Traveler Trip to Moscow!! And the 5 % Challenge with the Casual Travelers has begun. I am so excited. I got up early in the morning, weighed myself and started preparing my water bottle for the Water Challenge for today. Not only do we get to exercise our way to Moscow, we also get to learn how to get that water into our system. I am determined to earn lots of points for my team. I weighed in at 198, and my goal is to lose 9.9 pounds by April 20, 2013. That is attainable, not too fast, not too slow. And it will be go... Sat, 23 Feb 2013 07:47:06 EST What a Zumba morning!!! I started my day snooping around our Casual Traveler Team and I got pulled into all sorts of directions. I found some very motivating people, as well as a lot of people who really could use a pat on the back and some encouragement and friendly words. One girl in particular stood out to me. She posted a great blog, and a vlog as well, and she continued to say that she is NOT giving up, no matter how many physical and health issues she has to deal with. It was great to see a "real" person behin... Sat, 9 Feb 2013 15:35:59 EST 30 minutes because the Treadmill didn't work :) Yesterday I decided to dust off my treadmill again. I need more cardio on my life, but don't want to make my knees suffer for it. And alas, I had not used it in a year.... it didn't know me anymore and wouldn't talk to me. Not one little bit. I actually tried to jump start it by talking to it and walking on it despite the fact it wasn't running. The belt still moves, it is just much harder to get it going :) I did about 5 minutes of that, and then decided to turn on the TV, take out my little... Tue, 5 Feb 2013 19:21:56 EST Minor meltdown at work yesterday I work with dogs in the kennels of a big veterinary clinic. I chose animal care over continuing with what I had been doing for 10 years.... accounting. I knew that due to the nature of the work, which is extremely physical I would not be able to do that forever. My knees have always been bad, ever since I was a kid, so the constant crawling around on the ground to clean the bottom cages has been a bit of a challenge. The Kennel Director cut a deal with the Receptionist supervisor, so I can wo... Sat, 2 Feb 2013 10:19:46 EST Watching my Sodium in the snow storm..... Since I really was so happy about the end of my day, I am now stealing my post I posted on the Mini Challenge Team just now. We are watching our Sodium intake this week, so that gave me a lot to reflect upon and this is what I had to say about it......"So now I am checking sodium on food labels. Here is a breakthrough moment for today: We had very bad weather coming, so what I usually do to keep my sanity (I am terrified of driving in the snow!!!!!).... I stop at a gas station, fill up the ca... Mon, 28 Jan 2013 17:53:50 EST Sunday evening reflection.... I did well last week. I made some very good, some mediocre and some interesting choices. But I was focused on improvement all week, and made conscious efforts to move forward. Now I am ready to greet the new week ahead. I will curl up in the most comfortable bed in the world, pile my puppies in next to me and sleep like a baby in anticipation of what Monday will bring. I am ver thankful for the ideas and support I found in the Spark community.
Sun, 27 Jan 2013 21:10:56 EST It's all about choices...... What I learned this week..... I make choices every day, and every day, I get to decide between good and bad choices, or the lesser of two evils ;) I found out that I can eat pizza and cupcakes and chocolate, I eat one instead of two, I take small instead of large. I track my food (all of it), I don't budge on movement at all, but if I need rest, I will take it. I go to bed when I am tired, and do my Sun Salutations when I get up. It doesn't matter if I lose weight, it matters how I tread my b... Sat, 26 Jan 2013 16:36:06 EST 10 Minutes a day makes a difference!!! So I took the challenge of doing 10 minutes of exercise each day. Since I committed to this, I have been inventive how to fill those 10 minutes with movement..... here are a few I have done.....

- 11 minute Spark People Cardio Chair Workout (super fun and good for my busted knee)

- side stepping while doing arm movements with my 1/2 pound Zumba sticks (low impact and doing the arm moves really got my heart rate up, plus got all my upper body muscles engaged!!)
<BR... Tue, 22 Jan 2013 21:12:09 EST What motivates me? Reflections from Mini Challenge Team Well, L. posted a great Challenge for this week. We get to post a reward by midnight tonight that we are willing to work for all week, because it motivates us. It can't be food and it can only be for us, not for anyone else. Talk about hard challenge! I don't know what motivates me. Let me think. Well, my biggest motivation in about 5 years is now that I got a Cholesterol reading that was almost too high. 199. ALMOST 200. And I do not want to be someone who ate her way into a heart problem. J... Mon, 21 Jan 2013 21:24:38 EST I would like to belong to a church.... I have numerous failed attempts to become a church goer. Over the years I went to different churches, Catholic, Non-denominational etc. The best church I ever went to was just 10 of us meeting every Sunday in the pastors house and it was more like a bible study than regular church. Because we were so small, we merged with a bigger church in the area, that is far more pentecostal than my personality likes. Once the pastor was rolling around the church floor and the worship team started jogging... Sun, 20 Jan 2013 12:20:46 EST Ginger tea and God's great sense of humor ... I woke up with an inquiring mind. I know that God put everything on this earth to work for the good. Soooo, I thought what about the herbs and stuff he threw at us. I pulled up a few herbal and natural remedy sites, and found out that there is a lot of great natural stuff I can add to my daily life, that may support getting my cholesterol evened out. And some of it even helps with by bad knees. One of the wonderful things I read is how healthy the teas are I already love. Green, black, white ... Sat, 19 Jan 2013 12:07:09 EST I used to be a Shooting Star I faintly remember being on a Challenge Team that was called the Shooting Stars. And I remember the sign up time and waiting to be selected into a team, learning the name of my team and then meeting my Shooting Star Team mates. And when I didn't meet the weekly requirements and challenges, I slowly backed out and then stayed off off Spark entirely. With Shame and regret in my heart and a very bad conscience. So I believe Challenge Teams might be a bit much for me. And since I don't want to le... Fri, 18 Jan 2013 20:32:52 EST Lovely day! Had a very successful day. Woke up and did my 5 Sun Salutations. I passed right by the sweets and goodies in the staff kitchen. And I had my healthy lunch before the meeting, where Olive Garden food was served. I didn't eat anything from that, and I didn't even suffer, because my lunch was so good. Came home, shook my hubby off the couch and the puppies into their collars and leashes and took a 30 minute walk.... finished it up with 100 moves. I felt very energized and even had enough water... Mon, 14 Jan 2013 21:25:50 EST Making good choices :) I am tracking my food, making dinner plans and preparing lunches for next week that are healthy and very easily trackable. I made a pot full of bulgur to divide into Mason jars for healthy salads for the week. My main focus for the next weeks will be to get enough fiber in my diet, so help lower the cholesterol and to exercise regularly. Sun, 13 Jan 2013 14:07:25 EST So nice to be back I like to Spark again. This time a new focus, not losing weight so much as lowering bad cholesterol and raising the lower cholesterol along with finding workouts fitting to my busted knee. Strengthening exercises so the muscles around my knee can be stronger. If I lose weight along the way, that would be great, because I could easily lose 30 pounds :) Sat, 12 Jan 2013 23:24:20 EST Happy Birthday Twin Babies!! My twin babies Sarah and Julia are turning 19 years old today. Sarah is visiting Julia at College in NYC, and they are seemingly having a fantastic time. Today they are visiting the Museum of modern Art (Sarah is an artist) and then going for dinner, probably one of the fantastic vegetarian restaurants there are. After a very rocky growing up together, they finally seem to thrive on being apart as well as back together. Dreams do come true!

I have a few things to do today..... gett... Mon, 16 May 2011 10:38:18 EST Shooting Stars Day 8 My proud list for today......

I read both articles on portion sizes and serving sizes.
I learned some serving sizes by heart and sized up my food all day.
I worked hard with my puppies over the weekend, and got 120 minutes of exercise in at the Dog Dancing Seminar.
I encouraged people at the seminar.
I prayed for my friends and children.

Sun, 15 May 2011 22:45:05 EST Shooting Stars Day 6 Quick, before i go to bed:

Here is what I am proud of today:

I ate whole grain cereal with banana this morning.
I bought 6 small bottles of water and managed to drink 4 of them.
I packed a lunch of ciabatta, veggie burger, carrots, cauliflower, apple and greek yogurt.
I was able to walk the trainee through a lot of things and managed to express myself well.
I spent lunch at the park, kicked back, relaxed.
I continued trying to learn Psalm 91 by ... Thu, 12 May 2011 22:54:47 EST Shooting Stars Day 5 I just heard we are in Taaaaasmania. Yoohooo! I am so excited. We actually did it.

I will now list a few things I am proud of about my day, you know, just to make sure I remember the good stuff and the not so good stuff can then comfortably fade into the background and be ashamed of itself.

I ate whole grain cereal this morning.
I drank tea instead of coffee.
I remained positive and upbeat all day even when it got hectic at work and my young coworkers needed ... Wed, 11 May 2011 21:40:46 EST Shooting Stars Day 4 Why water? Because it makes you feel fuller, happier, flushes out the nasties and keeps your body healthy. Why not just drink it? Because I don't think of it, because I don't want to search for a bathroom when I am out and about, because I don't have it readily available. Hmmmmm. EXCUSES. It is actually the new habit I picked for this week, and I have been doing poorly getting my 8 glasses in each day. So right now, I have a big giant 2 Liter water bottle sitting next to me begging me to drin... Tue, 10 May 2011 18:06:24 EST Shooting Star Day 3 Yesterday i was extremely happy with my eating. I had to work 11-8 and there is a one hour lunch break, during which I tend to go and hit any fast food joint that is closeby. So having learned that I like crunchy things, I packed raw cauliflower to munch on for that effect (instead of chips), a tomato, a hard boiled egg, a little ciabatta roll, greek yogurt with Mango and a few strawberries. Well, and a slice of friendship bread I had baked the night before. But just look at the difference i... Mon, 9 May 2011 12:12:32 EST Shooting Star Day 2 I found myself wanting to work out and get to Hobart. I did 20 minutes of yard work, and then in the evening, looking at my healthy dinner, I decided not to eat it yet, but to get back on the treadmill to reach my 40 minutes that I had planned out for yesterday. I really didn't want to let my team down. I like the boost it gives me. And I like the fact that it is exercise minutes that are counted, and not walking minutes. My left knee is not well, and I am supplementing with Yoga and strength... Sun, 8 May 2011 09:57:19 EST The Challenge explained and the habit I will work on this week... In order to have easy access to this exciting challenge and the rules there are I will post the whole post in this blog along with the habit I will be working on this week. I have been working on that habit for a long time, very unsuccessfully I might add. It is....... drumroll..... Drinking my 8 glasses of water. So this will be what I am going to do with my life the next 8 weeks. Exercise, blog, encourage and get to Hobart, Tasmania. At least at first. I am so happy there are people here on... Sat, 7 May 2011 07:18:54 EST I am a Shooting Star!!! Yay me! Yay, I am a Shooting Star in the 2011 Spring 5% Challenge!!! I am very excited. I looked through the meal plans in my nutrition section and found out how easy it is to replace items to make the plan fit my taste and fridge contents. Very cool. I will start using the plan tomorrow, and will go later to buy some things I am still missing. This is great. I hope that my daughter was put in the same team as myself, this would be the icing on the cake. I am trying to figure out how to use the plan ... Tue, 3 May 2011 15:46:37 EST
