SALTYCHOCOLATE's SparkPeople Blog SALTYCHOCOLATE's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Prayer This was the opening sentence in an email from my parish priest that was sent to all parishioners. I find it comforting.

Prayer is a great weapon, a rich treasure, a wealth that is never exhausted, an undisturbed refuge, a cause of tranquility, the root of a multitude of blessings, and their source.
~Saint John Chrysostom (4th Century) Fri, 17 Nov 2017 13:17:05 EST Has this ever happened to you? Has this ever happened to you? You decide to go out for a second short run; you had to cut your first run short because the weather seemed iffy and you didn't want to get caught in a snowstorm a mile from your home. So, you decide to go out and realize that you need to leave through the front door because the Christmas lights are plugged into the outlet for the garage door. And right when you close the front door behind you, you realize that you've just locked yourself out of the house, at ... Thu, 5 Jan 2017 12:50:34 EST Sure Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about. Sure Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about. Lights, please.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them. And the glory of the Lord shown round about them. Tue, 25 Dec 2012 00:51:01 EST Smoking Slippers??? Really??? Just when you thought you had seen it all, Neiman Marcus is currently promoting smoking slippers, calling them luxurious and chic. Some folks may recall jackets called "smoking jackets", which, of course, were worn when one was smoking. But that was years ago (and before my time). You would think that with all of the knowledge of its dangers, smoking would not be promoted. That is clearly not the case.

Companies that make and sell slippers specifically called smoking slippers incl... Sun, 26 Aug 2012 16:46:33 EST Boycott ABC and Disney! Well, I was going to write a blog about the Disney Princess Half marathon that I ran. However, I just found out that ABC and its owner, Disney, have decided to actively denigrate Christians and promote hatred against Christianity with it's new "tv show". No doubt that ABC would never do this against any other religion. Please contact Disney and ABC and tell them that you will boycott Disney and ABC unless they pull the plug on their new show.
Here's a link to more information:
w... Tue, 8 Mar 2011 09:19:21 EST Four days, 17 miles, 1,800 for 2010 I have four more days to run 17 miles to make it 1,800 miles for 2010. Hoping I can do it. Fortunately there is a neighborhood near me where I can run without worrying about cars too much. It's very residential and the streets are wide. The great thing is that there is one street that is basically a loop that is almost 1 mile. The street has a great combination of hills and flat to give me a good workout.
Mon, 27 Dec 2010 16:10:43 EST Thank you Frank Today I went to the funeral of my beloved friend Frank. Frank was 84 and had been suffering from dementia and other ailments. I knew Frank, and his wife Betty, through my running club, of which Frank was a founding member. Frank was an amazing runner. He ran marathons, ultras and trail races of various distances and degrees of difficulty, some into his 70's. He was an inspiration to me and to all of the club members. He was truly amazing. He rarely spoke of himself; rather he would talk abo... Tue, 9 Nov 2010 15:30:33 EST Magazine promotes smoking? I was in CVS the other day looking for the current issue of Yankee magazine when a copy of the October issue of Esquire Magazine caught my eye. Now, I'm definitely NOT one to even look at Esquire, so what grabbed my attention? Was it the cover model? Well, sort of. It wasn't so much the model, actor Javier Bardem, but it was the fact that he is smoking! And, trying to look quite "cool" while doing so, I might add. A quick look inside the magazine and yes, there is another picture of him smok... Fri, 1 Oct 2010 11:57:15 EST Notes to self 1. Corkscrews are used to open wine bottles. Can openers are used to open CANS.
2. New Spark trophy/level - woo hoo! Sat, 4 Sep 2010 16:03:18 EST Road Construction means new routes - and new dogs! Work is being done on some of the roads that I like to run on so I've changed my routes - not so much for the road conditions but more for wanting to stay out of the way of the workers. They have enough to think about without having me on the roads. So I mapped a few new routes and have found some great loops. And, I've come to realize that I REALLY needed to change my routes. I still have my hills to run, which I don't mind, but now I have options to run some flatter roads. And, the great... Fri, 3 Sep 2010 13:10:05 EST A beautiful site to wake up to My husband had to get up early this morning. He woke me up and said I just had to see what was in our back yard. Well, sometime during the night, a baby deer was either born in our back yard or was born close by and fell asleep in our yard. What a beautiful site to wake up to. I've added a picture. Thu, 27 May 2010 23:47:26 EST God's "IPOD" I love to run but I don't wear an Ipod. I know a lot of runners do and claim they need the music to keep them going. I've been running for over 33 years and I just don't need it. As for my "music", I listen to God's music - the birds, the animals, the wind. I love hearing the back-and-forth sing song of birds. So sweet, so beautiful, that is my music. Sun, 23 May 2010 16:13:13 EST Origin of the Pumpernickel I just read a very interesting paragraph about the origin of the word Pumpernickel. Here it is along with a link to the website where I read it:

Napolean gave a common bread its name when he demanded a loaf of dark rye bread for his horse during the Prussian campaign. "Pain pour Nicole," he ordered, which meant "Bread for Nicole," his horse. To Germanic ears, the request sounded like "pumpernickel," which is the term we use today for this traditional loaf.

Wed, 19 May 2010 11:08:36 EST West Point 10k West Point held its annual 10k, 5k and kids fun run yesterday. For the past two years, West Point has been having these races on Armed Forces Day; in the past, the races were held in August. What a wonderful place to be. There is so much respect for everyone. Now, as far as the course is concerned I have only one complaint - IT IS JUST TOO DARN BEAUTIFUL! If you've ever been to West Point you'll know what I'm writing about. You have the most spectacular views of the Hudson River. It's sim... Sun, 16 May 2010 18:45:54 EST Bikram Yoga Posture Clinic- WOW! Today I went to a posture clinic at my studio. It was led by Diane Ducharme, one of the very few people who Bikram Choudhory has hand-picked to lead these clinics. It was awesome. If you ever have the opportunity to take a posture clinic or class with Diane Ducharme, I HIGHLY recommend it. She teaches by strict dialogue. It was interesting to find that some of what many teachers call dialogue is actually just made up "stuff". Sat, 1 May 2010 20:04:24 EST 41 Years!-amended 41 years - that's the length of time that I've known my friend Nancy, who I ran into the other day. I ran into her in the supermarket, of all places. I hadn't seen her in about 10 years! I knew she was sort of in the area because the last time I saw her was when I ran into her in the same supermarket in my town. We had a nice chat and exchanged phone numbers and addresses; she now lives in my town with her son and husband. I was thinking about her after our encounter, and then it hit me, ... Sat, 17 Apr 2010 19:15:15 EST Spring So glad the warmer weather is getting closer. We've had a long cold winter so the change is welcome. Really like those long days. Sat, 27 Mar 2010 17:16:24 EST Ice Skating I so enjoy watching ice skating. The grace and athleticism that skaters have amazing. They make it look SOOOOOOO easy. I enjoy all of the skating - speed skating, figure skating and ice dancing. Just spectacular. Tue, 23 Feb 2010 23:50:49 EST Time for new running shoes! I knew that I really needed a new pair of running shoes, but I just realized that I have 1,019 miles on the pair that I'm now wearing - YIKES! I didn't think it was that bad. Well, I ordered a new pair from one of my favorite running stores. I was debating about getting a different shoe but the sales tech told me to stick with what works. This was the store that put me in these shoes in the first place - so if I have over 1,000 miles on them and have no injuries, they must be the right sho... Sat, 20 Feb 2010 14:47:10 EST A Great idea I received this in an e-mail from my dad. Gotta love it!

=16297
Mon, 15 Feb 2010 14:44:43 EST Cold but Sunny I admit, I'm a warm weather person. I'll take 85 degree weather any day over a 45 degree weather. But, of course, there is nothing I can do about the weather so I've learned how to deal with it. Come January, I begin thinking how each day gets just a little bit longer. By about 30 seconds a day, I believe, the length of daylight increases. And, of course, without the winter how could we truly appreciate all of the God-given glory that spring and summer bring? Sun, 14 Feb 2010 18:44:41 EST My Bikram class today Today I did a Bikram yoga class; I've been doing Bikram for about six years. Class was pretty hot, but that's normal. The studio that I go to is known for being one of the hottest in the northeast. The issue that I have with my studio is that some of the teachers are extremely militant about not letting you drink water. Bikram does not have such rules. (Check out "Bikram Yoga Basics" on for the rules according to Bikram himself.) So after class the owner, who was not the te... Tue, 9 Feb 2010 15:42:19 EST Cats Our neighbor's cat really enjoys visiting us. We love having him. But, he does have some rules. For example, if I'm standing at the kitchen counter it means that I'm going to make him something to eat. Going to the refrigerator means that I'm going to get him something to eat. Opening one of my bottom cabinets means I'm going to get him something to eat.
The computer.
Being on the computer is a total waste of time. It is activity that should be forgotten. Instead, I should be pe... Tue, 2 Feb 2010 09:08:17 EST Gorgeous Day today Today the weather has been fantastic. We're in a one-day warm spell so I'm taking advantage of it. Went for a run and so other runners out there. No doubt they wanted to take advantage of the great weather as well. Not that I wouldn't have run if it had been overcast, but this sunny warm weather makes the day that much more enjoyable. But, alas, it can't last. Coldness is on its way. Sun, 27 Dec 2009 15:47:13 EST Christmas Well, Christmas day is over, but the holiday continues. Rejoice in the birth of Christ. Sat, 26 Dec 2009 20:10:44 EST Snow! Well, I thought i was done shoveling until I realized that I still had some cleaning up to do. Ugh! It's that heavy rain-soaked snow. BUT, the good news is that the shoveling gave me an extra workout! Cardiovascular AND strength training rolled into one. Fortunately the roads were clear so I was able to go to my Bikram class as well. Ok, enough rambling, it's homework time. Wed, 9 Dec 2009 16:50:12 EST Saint Barbara Today is the feast day of Saint Barbara. Briefly, Barbara was the daughter of DIoscorus, a pagan who held a high position in his government. Dioscorus wanted to keep Barbara secluded and raise her to praise the pagan "gods". She discovered Christianity and refused to accept pagan "gods". Long story short, she so infuriated her father that, after being tortured at the hands of the government officials, she was put to death for refusing to deny Christ. Her father requested to be the execution... Fri, 4 Dec 2009 14:25:25 EST Thanksgiving Well we normally host Thanksgiving. We really enjoy having everyone over and together. This year I'm going to take it easy. And guess what? I'm really glad that I am. I'll make a few things, go for my run and enjoy the day with family. Whew! Thu, 26 Nov 2009 09:17:04 EST Running in the Autumn Despite the cool and breezy (ok, cold and windy) weather, Autumn is probably my favorite time of year. And running in the Autumn? Well, that's just the icing on the cake (red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, or hot milk cake with vanilla bean frosting, or even better, my friend Andrea's Hungarian torte). Ok, I got off track.

This time of year is so gorgeous. I love both the vibrant and the subtle colors; I love the sounds of the wind, the rustling of the trees and the le... Fri, 23 Oct 2009 16:34:16 EST Woops Ok, I weighed myself today and realized that I had gained about three pounds. Since I had only about four pounds to lose before, I now have seven. So, I've slipped up but I'm dusting myself off and starting anew. Can't let it get me down, gotta make it work FOR me. Fri, 9 Oct 2009 15:41:19 EST Rain Well, we've had a bit of rain lately, but that's ok. I think if we learn to live with the weather that we have we'll be better off. There's nothing we can do to change it. Fortunately, we don't live in a hurricane zone or tornado zone. As for the cold weather, I just have to learn to deal with it. Sun, 30 Aug 2009 08:29:09 EST Doggie sitting Okey dokey. I'm done doggie sitting. Had a blast while she was here. She's so cute, I just have to give her hugs and kisses. One day we'll have a dog of our own. Sat, 29 Aug 2009 15:08:28 EST Dog Sitting So, I'm dog sitting for a few days. It's been fun. She's a great dog and oh so sweet. Thu, 27 Aug 2009 10:06:05 EST Getting stuff done Getting silly stuff done feels great, doesn't it? Sat, 22 Aug 2009 23:12:02 EST Laundry! Well, I went to the laundromat today and got a large load of laundry done, woo hoo! Little things make me happy. Tue, 18 Aug 2009 19:31:51 EST 30-day Challenge Tomorrow starts the beginning of a 30-day challenge at the Bikram yoga studio that I go to. No sure how many classes I'll do but I hope to do at least 20. Sun, 31 May 2009 18:21:27 EST First DNF, bummer! I was supposed to run a Memorial Day 10k today but ended up having first DNF (did not finish). I started running and about 1/2 mile into the race I started to get bad muscle cramps. I stopped, walked back to my car and went home. Uggh! Oh well, at least I started the race. Mon, 25 May 2009 16:42:35 EST Sweatsuit to Swimsuit Challenge Joining this team has been great. My biggest problem is getting the video workouts done. Despite their short length of time, they're great little workouts. Wed, 20 May 2009 15:13:12 EST Daily Blog Day 2 Video and Day 2 Challenge are waaiiiiitttttttiiiiiiiing! Mon, 4 May 2009 14:55:24 EST Sweatsuit to Swimsuit Challenge. Reason for joining: To get a better overall toned body.
Today I did my cardio workout and did the Day 1 Bootcamp video - cardio kickboxing. It made me realize that yes indeed I am very uncoordinated. Oh well, maybe becoming more coordinated will be another goal for me. Sun, 3 May 2009 18:40:02 EST NOTE TO SELF! Mon, 16 Feb 2009 17:53:14 EST Ooh boy. Ok, so I'm feeling better today but yesterday, oh yuk. I came down with a stomach bug yesterday morning and, well, I felt like crap. Today is better but I still feel light-headed; I'm probably still a bit dehydrated. Oh well, I'll be ok. Despite the fact that I felt like crap, I couldn't help but think what it must be like for a parent to get sick. We have no children. I can't imagine being sick like that and also having children to take care of. Parents have my utmost respect and admirati... Sun, 25 Jan 2009 16:35:08 EST Oh Blymey Lymey Found out today that I have Lyme disease. No wonder I was feeling yucky! Thu, 23 Oct 2008 19:02:21 EST Two changes that I've made Two changes (diet-wise, that is) in my life that I've made are:
1. I drink four to eight cups of water everyday. I aiming for eight.
2. After 33 years, I've finally stopped drinking diet soda! I now drink water or flavored, unsweetened seltzer. I feel so much better.

Two changes that I need to make in my life:
1. I'm too critical
2. I'm too cynical Sat, 2 Aug 2008 15:39:15 EST
