SAINTBETH's SparkPeople Blog SAINTBETH's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community The Sunday from Hell So, I wasn't feeling good yesterday or for 2 days before. My blood pressure reading was high and had been over 158 for the same time. When I saw 170/74 I decided I should see a doctor as the chronic heart failure class said. Being a victim of Kaiser Permamente, I headed for the ER on public transportation, leaving my place about 7:45 AM.
I walked to the trolley stop near my house, arriving at the stop near Zion Ave hospital about 8:15 the waiting bus was going the wrong direction, the s... Mon, 18 Jan 2016 09:31:52 EST Published a Friend's Poetry I've been busy in the office lately. A friend wanted me to publish a book of her poetry based on the Song of Solomon. It feels good to be back in the world of publishing in which I worked from 1990-2001, when I sold the right to my best selling titles to another publisher due to distribution problems in the market.

Judy's paperback won't be available until Valentine's Day but her ebook is ready to for pre-order now on If you want to read a few samples of some inspiring ... Wed, 23 Dec 2015 10:18:49 EST Phony weight loss? 15 pounds I don't have a scale yet, after wandering the world for 12 months. So, when I visited my friend in a rehab center a few weeks ago, I weighed myself on their balance scale which was in the hallway. I've used these since I was a kid and I know how to move the weights and get the correct weight. It said 235. I was disappointed, but resolute. I had been eating (slowly) all the bad stuff in my fridge and not replacing it. I thought I had gained a lot, but hey!

So yesterday when the doct... Wed, 16 Dec 2015 12:26:13 EST Good visit to a sick friend
Had a good visit with my friend, JD, yesterday. I was frustrated, as visiting her meant I didn't go grocery shopping. But I was blessed. Ellin trimmed my hair and Jacque and I went to the store on the way home, so I achieved three things instead of just one. I put my friend first and God blessed me with things I needed. Wed, 9 Dec 2015 08:15:01 EST I'm worth my time I've not been consistent in my tracking on SP because I was too busy to take care of myself. That's crazy! If I don't take care of myself, then I can't take care of anyone else.

Today I have decided: less work, more me time. The work I was doing was paying pennies, anyway. My health is valuable. I'm worth it.

Today I have decided to track my food more consistently. I have been eating healthy and my house is sugar free now. But I haven't tracked it.

Today I wil... Tue, 8 Dec 2015 13:05:02 EST New Attitude toward my Sweet Tooth I'm going to pull it out. I watched this 90 minute lecture by a doctor who explains how your body digests fat and surgars:

o/Self-Development/Diet-and-Nutrition/
Sugar-The-Bitter-Truth/36497

It completely changed how I think about sweet foods. I'm going Paleo! Good fats like olive oil are my friend because they make things taste good. When the food packagers take out the fat, the add extra sugars and high fruct... Wed, 2 Dec 2015 11:52:39 EST No more excuses Thank you to all the Sparklers who sent me messages and little nudges. I am finally back in the USA after a year abroad. Kazakhstan was a whole education in itself (9 months) and Costa Rica (2 1/2 months) was also a learning experience-- but about myself and getting older.

I was hospitalized on arrival in Costa Rica with a severe ear infection, mastoiditis, heart failure, and high blood pressure. These were all new to me and I learned that getting older ain't for sissies. The ear i... Mon, 16 Nov 2015 10:32:34 EST Learning Russian I've been working on learning Russian here in Kazakhstan. It's a long learning curve. So, while I eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, about half the time I don't know what I'm eating, much less what is in it. Exercise is a challenge--sidewalks have pot holes and cracks that could break an ankle. Also, there is the ice and snow, which have just recently melted. But since I take the bus here, there is a certain amount of walking that is built in to my day. My health [read weight] is not a... Fri, 13 Feb 2015 19:44:42 EST The Silk Road The people of Kazakhstan are so friendly and welcoming. Anyone who speaks English is treated like a celebrity! People heard us talking as we walked on the street and would stop and use the few phrases of English that they knew, ask to take a photo with us, and were so kind. It was great to be in a country that actually loves Americans.

Wed, 16 Jul 2014 11:38:03 EST When Your Camel Is Tired Mon, 24 Feb 2014 10:54:20 EST Gnarly Tue, 11 Feb 2014 11:22:41 EST Left Brain, Right Brain Sun, 9 Feb 2014 12:46:50 EST Good Choices to a New Me Tue, 4 Feb 2014 12:10:37 EST Just Thinking Mon, 3 Feb 2014 12:28:12 EST Grammatically Ungood Thu, 30 Jan 2014 12:08:01 EST Sometimes I Feel This Way Tue, 28 Jan 2014 11:19:57 EST Salt, Sugar Fat Found this book by Michael Moss at the local library. Had to wait to check it out, but it is worth it! He tells how the major food manufacturers [many owned by tobacco companies!] gang up on Americans to make it easy to make bad food choices and brain wash us to do that from childhood with advertising. It makes their profits go up--and our weight goes up too.

Makes me mad enough to change some of my bad food choices. Makes me take a whole different look at the grocery store shelves... I've got an opportunity to go to Kazakhstan this summer to teach English. What an adventure I'll have. There will be some friends there, too, so not totally alone, but part of the travel will be solo.

Please pray for the success of this trip.
Wed, 22 Jan 2014 11:39:03 EST Nice Kitty! Tue, 21 Jan 2014 10:14:44 EST Modern Technology Mon, 20 Jan 2014 10:39:59 EST Putting It All Together Sun, 19 Jan 2014 09:33:52 EST Get Natural Sat, 18 Jan 2014 10:15:04 EST All My Shoes Are Made for Walking Fri, 17 Jan 2014 08:52:25 EST At the Annual Rhyme Dance Thu, 16 Jan 2014 11:44:56 EST My Dog, Spot Mon, 13 Jan 2014 11:10:11 EST Dangers of Menopause Mon, 6 Jan 2014 11:32:37 EST An Alphabet of the Obsolete Tue, 31 Dec 2013 12:35:03 EST The Sincerest Compliment Sun, 29 Dec 2013 10:40:54 EST Junior! Sat, 28 Dec 2013 09:40:44 EST Holiday Cookies Thu, 26 Dec 2013 15:43:10 EST Upper Body Strength Tue, 24 Dec 2013 11:06:11 EST Post This on Every Mirror in Your House Mon, 23 Dec 2013 11:38:49 EST Yummy Veggies Fri, 20 Dec 2013 10:06:24 EST Pop Ups or A Little Whine Pop ups happen when your cursor happens on a hot button on SP. All the highlighted hypertext words in the health articles take you to ads, not info on the word highlighted.

My pop up blocker is very effective, but these ads pop up when the cursor happens on their territory on the page. In reading about rheumatoid arthritis, the word health took me to a sudafed ad, another word took me to an ad for Pearle Vision.
