This is not a mystery. Ever since I dropped dead last year, I’ve been nervous about working out. In turn, I’m now the heaviest I’ve ever been—and I’m not happy. You can read my other blogs, where I’ve resolved to lose weight and be a brand new person, but I was doing it all wrong.

The Kinect to Fitness and Health group has a new challenge built around ideas from The Spark. Mon, 16 Jan 2012 13:36:40 EST Kinecting in a World of Duty http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4570648 I’ve always been a fan of video games and technology. Anything that would marry the two would be icing on the cake. Starting out on the NES, I would hook up every accessory available, from Broderbund’s U-Force controller to the Miracle Piano Teaching System. So naturally, when Microsoft announced they were releasing a product that would be able to track your entire body, I was first in line.

Prior to the launch of Kinect for Xbox 360, I was already trying to get back into shape.... Sun, 6 Nov 2011 07:17:20 EST Decisions – Kinect Group & More http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4531709 I’m looking at my SparkPeople life and thinking that I need to improve a few things. I would like to join more groups so that my blogs and updates have more exposure. More exposure is always a good thing. That means I’ll get more support and meet more people. However, I don’t think it would be fair to the groups if I join and don’t participate. My goal is to lead my current groups and keep everyone motivated. That is tough to maintain and still participate in other groups and challenges... With the help of SparkPeople.com, I was able to lose 40 pounds, exercise without tiring, and even ran my first 5k in nearly 20 years. On February 19, 2011, I was to start a new trend. Since then I have set a few new records, but not necessarily ones that I wanted to set. In the last four months I have; died twice, been admitted to the hospital three times, road in the ambulance five times, and have had two shirts cut off me.

Here is th... Sun, 26 Jun 2011 16:20:34 EST Last Week - Meeting the Heroes http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4183260 Last week was pretty amazing. The American Heart Association set up a ceremony to honor the heroes that saved my life. My parents drove back in from Ohio to be there and meet them as well. They were there when I died, so it was a nice closure for them. A lot of people came, including the TV news and newpaper. I was on the front page of the New Haven Register the following day! Today, I’m back at work and took a nice walk during lunch. I would consider this remarkable progress. The best part, I don’t think this would be possible without those around me. And yes, that especially includes my wonderful friends here on Spark. Each day I’m getting better and each day I’m finding new motivation from all of you. This is why the SparkPeople program is so wonderful. It allows us ... That is the day I had a Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Usually on Saturday afternoons, I am home alone watching the kids while my wife is at work. If that was the case, I would be dead and buried today. However, someone had other plans for me. My parents were supposed to have visited about a month earlier, but due to a surgery my mom needed, they were out to see us on that day.

I woke up that day feeling great. I was... Tue, 22 Mar 2011 10:05:19 EST Turkey Day Weight Loss http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3806674 Somehow I managed to get a weight loss between Wednesday and today. Did I eat a lot yesterday? Yes! So, how did I do it? Well, for starters, I kept up with my usual morning routine of working out. I do this at home, via the Xbox, and makes for no excuses. The second strategy was hosting Thanksgiving. With people coming over, it puts you in overdrive to clean. Part of this involved running around the house and seeing everywhere my kids put up their secret drawings. A smiley face on th... I was waiting to get a picture of me gracefully running, with a smile on my face and wind blowing in my hair. The Wii Fit has all kinds of helpful pokes as me. First, it asks why I gained. Then, it says I might be eating more because it is cold out. Hmmmm…could be that I’m surrounded by chocolate and I have the sweet tooth of Mr. Willy Wonka himself. The other thing that got me was just how much I could eat because I worked out an extra 100 calories over my goal. I would snack on this and snack on that. I would tell myself, I worked out extra hard... I hit that snooze button and retreated deep into my three blankets. When that alarm went off again, something was nagging me. It was my clothes. They were sitting outside my door. They were waiting for me. They were saying, “we’ll make sure you’re not too cold”. You see, I had thought this through last night. I figured it would be cold out, so I set out warm clothes. I also knew I would be getting up early, so I ... Last week was a crazy week at work with the end of the year stuff going on. This weekend we had my in-laws around. Thankfully, despite how busy I’ve been, I’ve been tracking my food and exercise. For some reason, my son woke up and started screaming in the hallway and wanted me to tuck him in again, just the way mom does it. No, he couldn’t have mom do it. He wanted dad to do it the way mom does it. Go figure. I tried to go back to sleep, but because of some kind of nasty bug going around, I couldn’t sleep. So, I’ve been up since about 2:30 a.m. What does the normal person do? Who can’t sleep at 2:30 a.m. and who was fighting off a col... Tue, 19 Oct 2010 14:02:29 EST Spooky Halloween Time http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3723929 So there is one drawback to walking to work in the morning, before the sun rises. Well, it may be a benefit, depending on how you look at it. Because of the season, more and more people are putting up their Halloween decorations. I think this is pretty cool because people are doing some amazing decorating. However, when I'm walking in the morning, I'm sometimes caught by surprise by new decorations. The ones that were either left on all night or that I catch a glimpse of in the streetlig... Mon, 18 Oct 2010 16:58:59 EST Taking It Easy http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3720339 I was watching The Biggest Loser the other day and was wondering why I didn't have their determination. I mean, yeah, they have a coach cursing and yelling at them till they puke. Literally, one dude went outside to chuck out his breakfast, right there in the middle of their three hour circuit training course. And even during that training, they weren't taking it lightly. The trainer kept pushing them harder and harder. No breaks....at least not shown on TV.

Thankfully, I ra... So, buckle up, it's going to be a wild and crazy ride. A little of this, a dash of that, and a sprinkle of whatever.

Not sure if you saw my blog from yesterday, but my intention is to drop my calorie burn rate down and drop the amount of food I eat down. Sat, 16 Oct 2010 21:41:29 EST New Exercise: The Ream Press http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3716980 OK, after my semi-popular bean carry exercise, I thought I would post another one for your reading pleasure. I call it, the Ream Press. I’m at work, printing out lots of paper. Personally, some days I think we need to go back to typewriters and doing things by hand. Somehow, these computers make producing paperwork too easy. But, anyhow, that is beside the point. I managed to work through a good chunk of a ream of paper and had to go get some refill. The paper is kept down the hall a b... Fri, 15 Oct 2010 10:33:42 EST Say Hello To My Little Friend http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3715724 A while back, I was trying to find a free pedometer online. I kept coming up with blank searches and expired offers. However, I landed on one offer from Tylenol's Just Keep Moving Program. If I signed up for it, they said they would send me a pedometer in 4-6 weeks. Well, that time has come and gone. I ended up buying myself a pedometer and forgot all about it.

Well, a few days ago, Mr. Postman brings me something from Tylenol. It is pretty skinny, so I just kind of ignore ... Thu, 14 Oct 2010 18:19:08 EST When I Grow Up http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3713850 I've been watching some videos in anticipation of picking up the latest dance game for the Wii, Just Dance 2. It features a song called "When I Grow Up". It is quite a catchy song that also appears on the Wii game, Hottest Party. However, in Hottest Party, they use a clip of the actual video. To be honest, I can't decide which I like better. The song or the video. The video is smoking hot. Here is a link so you can see for yourself:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0K46C82v9... But, as my walks have been doing for me lately, my thoughts cleared up and the sky started to shine. OK, this is figurative. No, I'm not on LSD or some crazy drug. And no, I'm not seeing visions. I felt a calmness and a realization that nothing and no one is going to stop me from getting to my goal.

I may or may not reach my goal when I want to. That is fine with me. But, I will reach it. I might be crawling... Tue, 12 Oct 2010 21:48:50 EST New Exercise: Carrying Beans To Work http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3707056 Not that I did this intentionally, but I created a new workout for myself today. For various reasons, I had left my backpack at work on Friday. Today I wanted to bring in some of the delicious Lentil soup I had made yesterday. After scooping out 2 ½ cups of soup, I started thinking, “how am I going to get this to work without spilling it?” Even though I had a lid for it, I didn’t want to drip any of the precious calories, which I’ve already accounted for, out. So as I’m walking to work,... Mon, 11 Oct 2010 08:16:30 EST About to Lose A Kid (In Weight) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3704888 OK, so my 10 year pregnancy is almost over. I'm knocking on the door of almost 40 pounds lost. Coincidentally, my son weighs exactly 40 pounds. In other words, for nearly the last 10 years, I've been carrying around more than two preschoolers. Growing up, I was always in the Nerd Herd or the Geek Squad. Even when I joined the Marines, got whipped into shape, and looked sharp in a pair of Dress Blues, I still never considered myself hot. Perhaps that is why I allowed myself to get 100 pounds heavier since getting out. Maybe I need to think differently about who I am.

Over this last week, I've started to think about how my at... Sat, 9 Oct 2010 20:45:54 EST Just A Little Walk http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3702642 Wow, what a crazy day. Usually I'm posting this blog early on, but today got a little out of hand. Got up at the normal time and did a bit of exercise and then off to work. I had so much to catch up on, but then I got a call and had to go to the ER for my wife. Nothing serious, but just needed to get something checked out (better safe than sorry). One thing led to another and I never did get back to work. Looks like I'll be taking my holiday on Monday and treating it almost like a norma... As you can tell from the title, I licked the spoon. I was dipping out dinner for myself and the kids and before the spoon hit the sink, it made a pit stop at my mouth. Welcome to Sinners R' Us. I'm just waiting for the calorie police to come knock down my door. Hey officer, I have a valid excuse. One kid was stripping their clothes off and the other kid was smashing an unidentifiable object into the carpet. Oh, and did I ment... Thu, 7 Oct 2010 13:19:48 EST Making Today Special http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3697245
So, I'll be honest with you, yesterday wasn't my happiest day ever, but I'm going to talk about how I'm making it better. It started off good. I felt pretty good and was ready to do my run. Warmed up and laced up my shoes. Here is where my "doh" moment comes. I laced one shoe too tight, thinking it was good support. However, by the time my run was over, my foot was pretty sore. It is still sore today. Yeah, hand to forehead. From there, things just kind of went downhill. At wo... Wed, 6 Oct 2010 16:39:58 EST The Karate Kid (AKA Skeletons In The Closet) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3693600 Last night I popped in The Karate Kid. This is the original, not the new one just released on DVD. I just wanted to watch something emotional and inspirational. It is funny how certain things come full circle in life. On my walk back home from work, the phrase “everyone has their vices” was swirling in my mind. I had seen something that triggered the thought and I tried to think what my vices were. Interesting enough, that night I found out one of them. It is candy. Someone had gotte... Tue, 5 Oct 2010 09:43:57 EST I AM Mario! (Or, insert Super Hero name here) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3690624 Barely over a month ago, I quit my second job and used the last paycheck to get the Wii Fit Balance Board. I was excited to try it out. One thing I heard about, was this game that looked like Super Mario Galaxy. Except, YOU are Mario and you have to run and jump past obstacles, pitfalls, and swinging objects. My kids were watching me when I first tried it. After stopping several times, getting out of breath, and being knocked off the edge, my character stood there looking sad and deject... Mon, 4 Oct 2010 07:08:50 EST Running Around In My Undies http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3689478 I got back from a nice little walk to the park with the kids. Little did they know, but I planned a nice long hill to the park. It was downhill there and uphill back. They had lots of fun. We even got some hide and seek in, so I was able to keep moving. This little trip netted me about 2500 steps. Not much of a calorie burn for me, but hey...we all got some exercise and then we all got a nice nap.

Yes, even I took a little nap. I got my 8 hours in last night, but I think my ... Too late to turn back now. Not only did I eat healthy all day yesterday, but I think I did a good job keeping my kids on track too. Mixing it up with veggies, fruits, fiber, carbs, protein, water, water, and more water. We were at the grocery and for a little treat, I thought ice cream cones would do the trick. I looked at the side and it looked like a reasonable and manageable amount of calories, etc.

However, I didn't account for there bei... Sat, 2 Oct 2010 15:47:06 EST Sweat, Surf, & Sand http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3685014 It is always nice to get out and exercise when you feel that Fall chill in the air. When you feel that gentle breeze against your body and you can just feel good things in the air. Today was not one of those days. Today I was all pumped up to get a run in. I warmed up, did some jumping jacks, some light stretching, and the out the door. And bam! It was so windy. Felt like a hurricane. The local news is saying up to 50 mph winds. I even ran by them on the boardwalk. Here’s a picture ... I'm actually going to talk about trash later on.

But first, a little update on my sleep test. Because I walked into my doctor's office (just over a month ago) being overweight and saying I snore, he was concerned I might have sleep apnea. Oh, that and my EKG was a little off.

Fast forward to last night. There I was, all hooked up to over 20 wires. There was a camera and speaker watching my every mov... Thu, 30 Sep 2010 18:16:30 EST It's Not the Load that Breaks You Down http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3679189 This morning I had a nice run with my new RUNNING shoes! I believe this is the first pair of running shoes that I’ve owned. I’ve had tennis shoes, cross-training shoes, walking shoes, etc. So I’m pretty excited. All because I made my boss feel bad. Long story short, my boss was posting crazy stuff on my Facebook page and I cut her from my friends list. My birthday came up and she felt bad and got me a gift card, etc. I added her back and got myself some running shoes!

It was... I'm not concerned though because I've added strength training to my workout and I've done everything right that I know to do. I've set my goals in weight and workouts and have been hitting those ranges. I'm feeling great and my body feels more energized. Towards the end of the week, I'll take another measurement to see if I've lost any inches in my gut and hips.

As for today, back to work I go. I've got pl... Well, I got two instant messages from people on facebook, both asked, "why are you up so early?". One was going to bed after getting home from working a late shift and the other was going to work. I should have told them, "I'm going streaking."

You see, I'm already past a week on streaking 90 minutes of exercise a day. I've got nearly an entire month of spinning that wheel! Two weeks chec... Sun, 26 Sep 2010 07:06:16 EST I'm Eating Ice Cream Guilt Free http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3668910 Last night, I scooped out and filled a bowl full of ice cream...guilt free. OK, to be honest, the bowl I used was a Tupperware container made to hold condiments or something. You could probably fit a pickle or two in it. But, I made full use of it and fit an entire half cup of ice cream!

Why was I able to do this guilt free? Because, I'm a streaker! No, you don't have to close your window shades. I'm fully clothed, rest assured. I am hitting my steaks on exercise, trackin... Sat, 25 Sep 2010 07:01:58 EST Weight Loss, A Run, & A Bus Ride http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3666815 So today, the scale greeted me with a pleasant surprise. It looks like my hard work is starting to pay off. After almost a week of up and down movement, the scale has dropped for a couple weeks in a row. This week was probably the biggest drop yet! It was tough too, because I had this nasty little cold. I would feel good while exercising, but would be hacking up a storm after I was done.

Believe me, there was nothing more I wanted to do than curl up on the couch, under a nic... Fri, 24 Sep 2010 07:52:00 EST Running Like a Runny Nose http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3664132 So, the last few days I’ve been battling this crazy cold. First it was a cough, then it was a runny nose, and today I can’t stop sweating. Yesterday was interesting. I tried everything I could to stop this runny nose. I tried drinking 20 glasses of water. Nothing but pee there. I tried holding my head over boiling water for steam. Nothing but an increase in the runny there. A neighbor offered this tea pot looking thing that poured water in one nostril and out the other. Well, that wa... Thu, 23 Sep 2010 08:02:11 EST He's on Fire! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3660643
“HE’S ON FIRE!!!” These words should be familiar to anyone who used to play the game, NBA Jam. For those that haven’t, the basic idea is pretty cool. You controlled a basketball team and if a player made three shots in a row, they would yell “He’s on Fire!” The player would literally turn on fire! From there, it seemed every shot he made, not only went in, but went in with flair. He would spin multiple times and dunk, or he would make a shot all the way across the court, etc.
... Wed, 22 Sep 2010 07:49:53 EST Grabbing the Bull by the Horns http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3658443 Lol, I had a whole blog written out and I swore I posted it. Lol, who knows where in cyberspace it is now. Somewhere in the computer heavens I guess. Anyhow…. I try to notice something on my walks. It can be something ordinary, unusual, or striking. Just trying to be more observant about life in general. Today, I saw a truck with some horns tied to the front. Of course, the phrase came to me, “taking a bull by the horns”. Well, bull, if you are listening…consider your horns grabbed! <... Tue, 21 Sep 2010 13:17:57 EST It's Not What You Do Once In A While.... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3655300 "It's not what you do once in a while, it's what you do day in and day out that makes the difference.". - Jenny Craig

This is the quote that greeted me as I walked back into my work. I was out trying to get at least 10 minutes of exercise in during my lunch break and noticed the announcement sign. This quote struck me as interesting, because the announcement board usually doesn't have anything to do with weight loss. I've never been on the Jenny Craig diet (many others, just no...
