The next best thing.... Yesterday I posted some progress photos and commented on my regret at not having taken photos when I first started my SparkPeople journey to compare.

I had a hunt around and found this website that lets you track your progress towards goal by creating virtual pictures based on your height, weight, body type etc. I set it up with my start weight (230 lbs)and my current weight (171 lbs) and got these comparison pictures. OK - not ideal, but it gives me an indication of how far I've ... Sun, 1 Sep 2013 06:53:31 EST Lost pounds, inches and some personal demons on BLC22 This week I completed the BLC22 challenge. I can't say enough about how happy I am I did it! Over the 12 weeks of the challenge I lost 9 lbs and 5.5 inches. Not the most impressive stats I grant you, during those 12 weeks I had had huge personal victories. Not least, I broke out of a longstanding plateau, appeared in a swimsuit in a public pool and moved from obese BMI to overweight.
244

Although I weigh and measure myself regularly I've never been one for for ta... Sat, 31 Aug 2013 08:20:34 EST Woohoo! I'm overweight! After years of languishing in the obese zone, today my BMI tells me I'm overweight. Perish the thought that I could ever be 'normal' 40 20 Wed, 7 Aug 2013 16:03:13 EST SparkPeople 1 Year Anniversay
It's a year to the day since I took myself by the scruff of the neck and gave myself a good shake. Then I weighed myself, recovered from the shock and started my SparkPeople journey. I'm so happy I did!

As the football (soccer) pundits say - it's been a game of two halves. The first 6 months were like falling off a log. I got used to planning, weighing and tracking my food, forced myself to exercise and the weight started dropping off like clockwork. I'd lost 40lbs and felt v... Mon, 5 Aug 2013 16:43:05 EST Tip for BLC iPad users I was getting RSI of the swiping finger trying to find my post on the long tracking thread, so I hunted down an app that you can use to find find your username (in your tracking post) on the web page - or any word on any web page.
It's called 'find in page', it's free and it's doing a great job of overcoming the iOS shortfall. I'd add a link but I think most of you wouldn't be able to use the UK store.
224 Sat, 8 Jun 2013 11:25:22 EST My goals for BLC22 Today Is the first day of The Biggest Loser 12 week challenge. I've signed up and joined the Ivory Falcons team. My first assignment is to set myself some goals and make weekly commitments on how I intend to meet them.

Weight: The biggest goal for me during the challenge is to break my weight-loss plateau. I'll feel that I'm back on the right track if I've lost 6lb by the end of the challenge so that's my weight loss goal over the duration of the task.
192
<... Wed, 5 Jun 2013 16:23:52 EST Feeling hungrier - a good sign? I'm not sure if I'm imagining this, but I think I'm getting hungrier since adding some different workouts to my schedule. I generally have spare calories left over in my nutrition plan and these days I often eat because I know I have to rather than because I'm hungry so I'm not too worried about taking on a bit more food. I'm actually hoping this might be a sign than I've boosted my metabolism and my body is changing. Of course it might be unrelated. I guess time will tell.... Fri, 31 May 2013 10:28:42 EST A new toy and a plan Today is weigh in day.... I've lost ¼ lb (woohoo!) which is an improvement on the many recent weeks where I've lost nothing. It is at least progress in the right direction.
Following some much appreciated sage advice from some lovely sparkers I've decided to shift my focus from weightloss and my frustrating plateau to improving my fitness. So yesterday I invested in an exercise bike and I'm now starting a beginners interval training program.

Starting with this
Wed, 29 May 2013 07:56:20 EST Plateau, patience and perseverance Today I'm using my blog to have a bit of a whinge because I'm feeling sorry for myself...
There I am trotting along nicely from August - February. I have my eating habits under control I'm walking practically every day and my weight is dropping at a nice sensible pace. Then what? I carry on but the weight loss all but stops. Week after week of no change with just the occasional loss since then.
I joined the plateau busting program - I'm on my second go around. I try hard to celebra... Sun, 26 May 2013 10:26:58 EST Rising to the challenge! I don't know what it is about me and challenges on SparkPeople - but we just seem to fit.
I started training for the BLC22 challenge on Wednesday - I love it already and it hasn't actually started yet
2

The admins are doing a fabulous job - it's so well organised and it's giving me a new burst of enthusiasm and motivation which has to be a good thing. Really long forward to getting stuck in!
244 Sat, 18 May 2013 11:54:02 EST Keep calm and carry on..... At long last I’ve hit my latest 10lbs mini-goal – Yay me!!!
I’m not going to lie – shifting the latest 10lbs has taken an age and been really hard work and on several occasions I’ve felt like throwing myself off the wagon and yielding to every temptation going. I chose not to.
43
Instead I dug deep into the website, buried myself in SparkPeople wisdom and discovered I was a victim of the dreaded ‘plateau’ (Booooo! Hisssss!).
It seems that there is really no ... Wed, 15 May 2013 09:29:28 EST Over the hump! I weighed in this morning and I've lost ¾lb…OK no big deal there, but that ¾lb takes me over my half way point at last. I now have less weight to lose than I’ve already lost which makes me feel happy and proud.
45 ½ lbs lost – 44 ½ left to go. YAY!!
9 244
Wed, 20 Mar 2013 04:14:54 EST Back in your box work! Had one of those weeks where work pressures invaded my real life and took over my 'me time'. First casualty of the shift in work/life balance? My lunchtime walks and evening workouts. Hate that!
I took my eye off the ball for a couple of days but I'm back in the game now with a fresh reminder that it's all too easy to be nudged off track and lose focus. It's so easy to say 'exercise must be my priority' but not so easy to make it happen. OK so sometimes family takes priority it matters ... Sat, 16 Mar 2013 12:08:50 EST A big investment but massive returns I've invested a lot of time and effort over the last 6 months in making manageable changes to my lifestyle by following the SparkPeople programme. I've made myself find time to fit SparkPeople into my daily schedule which wasn't easy especially to start with. Now though, I'm definitely seeing great returns on my investment.
I can see and measure the changes in my physical self. I've lost weight - 3 stones or 42 lbs. I've reduced my size by 27 inches overall which means that i've dropp... Thu, 21 Feb 2013 10:28:01 EST Success and online shopping Today I finished the January Jumpstart challenge - 28 days of workouts in a row is a real achievement for me so I feel great about completing the challenge. 224
Feeling positive, I ordered 3 SparkPeople workout DVDs so I have no excuse to keep the exercise streak going. They aren't available in the UK so I got them from amazon US who estimated delivery on 12th Feb. I wondered if the courier would be rowing or swimming them across the pond, but happy to report that they actua... Sat, 26 Jan 2013 09:23:00 EST Prettier than lard A few months ago I read somewhere on SparkPeople that it's a good idea to have some sort of physical representation of how far you've come on your own particular journey. I have a lot of weight to lose - the idea of collecting 90lbs of lard in my fridge really didn't appeal. So instead I pinched someone elses's idea of a paperclip chain - each paperclip to represent a pound of weight loss. Mine's growing, and each time I see it dangling next to my mirror it reminds me far I've come and how mu... Sun, 13 Jan 2013 10:15:49 EST Steps, miles, months and a smiley new fitness friend Five months into this new healthier lifestyle and things are going swimmingly. I have now lost a total of 2.5 stones or 35lbs.
I have a new happy little walking buddy - my Fitbit who I've named Phyllis. She counts my steps, miles covered and calories burned throughout the day and even better, reports them straight to SparkPeople for me. She's really boosted my fitness minutes and always greets me with a happy little smile. I have the feeling that this is the beginning of a of a wonderfu... Fri, 11 Jan 2013 16:54:48 EST Definitely getting there.... So - end of year is a great opportunity to look at what I achieved in 2012 and what I aim to achieve in 2013.
I started SparkPeople properly in August 2012 and in that time I've accomplished quite a bit. Most obviously I've lost:
31lbs ( 2 stones 3 lbs) in weight
4 inches off my waist
5 inches off my hips
3.5 inches off my bust
2.5 inches off my thighs
2.5 inches off my arms

Less easy to measure but hugely life-changing - I've gained:
Control... The workouts feel easier now than they did at the start and I'm down 7 lbs since I began the challenge. 104
... Sun, 9 Dec 2012 08:08:39 EST Challenge day 14 Half way through the challenge and on a roll. Lost another 2 lbs this week so that's 4 so far during the challenge. Looking forward to the next 2 weeks.
244 252 Fri, 30 Nov 2012 13:47:12 EST Challenge day 13 Unlucky for some - but my weigh in today told me I've now lost 2 stones 224
Just about managed to scrape in a quick walk between meetings today - reckon my poor old bod could probably do with an easier day. Roll on tomorrow and the half-way point of the challenge. Thu, 29 Nov 2012 15:01:18 EST Challenge day 12 Sticking with it! 244
It could be my imagination - but I think I found the 'lean legs' video a little easier this week..... Wed, 28 Nov 2012 15:16:48 EST Challenge day 11 A wild and windy lunchtime walk, but at least it stopped raining for me. Bootcamp video (day 4) was actually quite enjoyable!
40 Tue, 27 Nov 2012 15:14:33 EST Challenge day 10 Check! Another day done. Still a little surprised at how do-able it is. Come lunchtime at work and I'm ready for a walk. I think it's because it fits into my schedule. Love the 10 minute toning videos - the 18 minute cardio sculpt was a real push. Will do it again in a couple of weeks and see if I find it any easier. So far so good.
43 Mon, 26 Nov 2012 13:58:11 EST Challenge day 9 Another day done and I'm managing to keep up with it. Completed my 2 extra workouts over the weekend, so back into the workday routine tomorrow. Hoping for dry weather, but the forecast isn't looking good. Wondering if paddling rather than walking may burn a few extra calories.....
38 Sun, 25 Nov 2012 15:40:17 EST Challenge day 8 Start of week 2 and challenge gets a little harder in that it's pretty much the same workout schedule as last week, but I get to choose an additional one that I do twice during the week.
Decided to push myself and choose an 18 minute bootcamp mix of cardio and sculpting. I did it for the first time today - at least as well as I could and it about killed me! Plan to do it again tomorrow and hope to find it easier..... In addition I've done the scheduled video which was another 10 mins car... Sat, 24 Nov 2012 13:15:09 EST Challenge day 7 First week finished and 2lbs down yay me! 104 Fri, 23 Nov 2012 13:52:51 EST Challenge day 6 A weird thing happened to me today - I went for a walk at lunchtime because I felt like it!!!!!
43
Had to take a detour from my usual route though because the river had burst its banks. This was a very happy day for my duck friends...

Thu, 22 Nov 2012 16:21:38 EST Challenge day 5 Another rainy day for my lunchtime walk - me and the ducks are bonding!
So that's all my cardio done for the first week but I still have 2 toning videos to do. Today was toning legs.... They feel as though they may drop off before bedtime so it must be reaching muscles that haven't seen action in a while.
40 Wed, 21 Nov 2012 13:18:27 EST Challenge day 4 Day 4 finished, including a workday walk in the wind and rain - how dedicated am I! 43 Tue, 20 Nov 2012 14:58:20 EST Challenge day 3 Another box checked - seem to be coping so far. Upper body toning video today has left its mark, expecting aches tomorrow.
Managed a 25 minute walk at lunchtime and another 10 minutes to the shop this evening. Lunchtime walk everyday should be manageable as long as I can get it blocked out in the diary. Looking good so far.......
244 Mon, 19 Nov 2012 16:15:08 EST Challenge day 2 So day 2 of the 28-day Bootcamp Challenge done and dusted! I woke to a beautiful bright frosty morning, and being unable to decide whether to weigh on Thursdays or Sundays, I've done both this week and discovered my weight 2 lbs down (hope it's still that way on Thursday) not far to go to my next mini-goal now.
I actually didn't hate the bootcamp toning video and decided to make the most of the beautiful day and went for a walk in the woods for my cardio - which I really enjoyed.
V... Sun, 18 Nov 2012 17:04:21 EST Giving myself a hefty kick Happy to report that I lost a pond this week - it feels good to be moving down that graph again. My clothes feel much looser and I think I have more energy 224
Though I'm on a roll with my nutrition, that pesky exercise bug is still refusing to bite me. I definitely need a good shove - so today I joined the 28 Day Bootcamp Challenge. I am determined to complete it and prove to myself that the sporty kid who played on every team going is still there, hidden away behind the squ... Sat, 17 Nov 2012 12:43:50 EST No loss of weight....or motivation No weight loss this week 39 but I haven't done much different so I expect it'll shift soon enough. Just to help it in its way, I'll try super hard to get some more exercise in over the next few days to see if that helps.
Come on Ruthie - stick with it, it's working. Sat, 10 Nov 2012 15:25:53 EST Remember, remember, the 5th November, Gunpowder, Treason and Plot So winter has arrived. British summertime ended last weekend when we put the clocks back an hour. The dark evenings are back bringing with them the temptation to snuggle up on the sofa, watch tv and eat something comforting. Not for me this year! I intend to keep the positive momentum going through all the winter temptations and keep shrinking and getting fitter.
One such hurdle will be negotiated tonight when we Brits head off into the freezing night to huddle around bonfires and watch ... Sat, 3 Nov 2012 09:38:11 EST Achieving my goals and feeling proud Today I passed my second mini-goal and I really feel that I've achieved something major. YAY ME!!
21 pounds or 1.5 stones gone. The dietary changes I've made so far have now become second nature and I feel certain that I can stick with them long-term so I know that I'll get to my final goal eventually - even though I still have a long way to go.
So - now I feel I have control of the food situation, I aim to wrestle myself into submission over the exercise aspect. So far my efforts h... Mon, 29 Oct 2012 09:33:18 EST Covent Garden, a dream and a soppy mum I found some motivation in a most unexepected place...
Last night my 17 year old son and I went to Covent Garden and saw the Royal Ballet Company perform Swan Lake. As we watched and were completely entranced by the performance, I was aware that We were experiencing one of those moments that will live in the memory forever.
We both took our inspiration from the skill of the dancers. My son (a soon to be professional ballet dancer) from the virtuosity and artistry of the incredible ... Sun, 14 Oct 2012 16:09:45 EST 20% there and feeling 100% positive So today I realised that I'm 20% of the way there! That is 20% of the way to reaching my healthy weight goal and going moving onto maintenance.
I am 100% positive that I will get to my goal, though I'd like to get there by by July 2014 it really wouldn't matter too much if I didn't. It's so clear to me now that this is a life-long lifestyle change. It isn't about doing it quickly it seems to me, it's about getting the small changes properly ingrained and erasing the bad old habits. It's... Fri, 12 Oct 2012 08:17:43 EST Two currencies means two chances to celebrate I've been a little disgruntled on weigh in days at having to resort to a calculator to turn my scales reading of stones and pounds into just pounds - and the numbers seem so high! My maths isn't great and a stone is 14 pounds - who learns the 14 times table? Today however I've discovered the silver lining to that particular cloud realising that not only can I celebrate my 10 pound mini goals, but I can also celebrate stones like a proper Brit!
I've lost my first stone - woohoo go me!!! ... Thu, 4 Oct 2012 12:21:16 EST First leg of the journey completed Spending some time this morning thinking about what I've achieved so far and feeling pretty proud of myself. I've hit my first mini-goal and can see that now I'm starting to make some real changes to my life. I feel confident and positive that I can do this. Small changes, small steps, small goals......they all add up to something huge.
Yay! Go me :-) Sat, 29 Sep 2012 08:20:54 EST
