RUTHEY01's SparkPeople Blog RUTHEY01's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Honesty Check I had a doctor's appointment on Friday for sinus infection and a cold. I got a nasty shock when I got on the scales.

Since my surgery in July, I haven't been able to exercise like I had gotten into the habit of doing. I topped the scales at 178. That's a 29 BMI!! SO... It is time to start over and get the weight off again.

Never give up and never quit trying, right?? That is the main thing I've learned over the past 3 years with SparkPeople. I have gotten into the... Mon, 3 Nov 2014 12:44:15 EST Sad Today I am on an emotional roller coaster today.

Last night Clyde found our cat curled up dead. He was our 4 legged son and we loved him dearly. He had been in great shape until 2 days ago when he started crying and acting listless. He was supposed to see the vet today.

Every time I think about him not being with us I start to cry. At other times I think about his cute antics over the years and I can't help but smile. Especially when he was a baby. And when we were going... Thu, 28 Aug 2014 13:36:36 EST Cancer Free I had my follow-up today. I am cancer free and will not need chemo or radiation therapy. I will have CT Scans and follow-up appointments every 6 months for at least 2 years to make sure that there isn't any new growths.

I did find out today that it was stage 1b cancer so we were extremely lucky (the doctor's words) to have caught it when we did. I call it the Lord's providence. Now I have 1 more reason to eat healthy and get a lot of fresh air and exercise.

Thank you... Tue, 12 Aug 2014 20:25:26 EST Home Again This is the first chance I have had to update everyone on my surgery. The VA Hospital didn't have WiFi.

They surgery itself lasted a little over 7 hours. They removed the whole upper lobe of the right lung. The cancer was just a small spot but it had almost eaten through the lung wall. Thank God we caught it when we did. It could have spread throughout my chest cavity. Because the cancer was so aggressive, I am going to see an oncologist to make sure it didn't spread. We hav... Fri, 8 Aug 2014 01:13:03 EST Addendum I finally have a time to check-in for surgery. I have to be there at 5:30 am which means leaving home at 3:30. Or as my DH says, "Oh my God that's early!!". 40 I guess I go to sleep by 8 pm tonight, neighbors permitting. Tue, 22 Jul 2014 11:13:02 EST Big Day Wednesday I have had all the preliminary appointments now and I'm just waiting for the surgery. The wait is the worst. At least until after surgery. I have had a very busy 2 weeks!

The surgery will be done on Wednesday. It will take between 2 and 4 hours to complete depending on the procedure. I do hope they give my DH and DD updates on how things are going during surgery. No need for them to be stressing all that time.

The anesthesiologist told me that for the first couple ... Mon, 21 Jul 2014 11:29:50 EST Surgeon's Visit I had my appointment with the thoracic surgeon this afternoon. We went over all the test data and I have a pretty good understanding of what to expect over the next few weeks.

She showed me the PET Scan results. The mass is near the bottom of the upper lobe. It measures 2.3 cm. Surgery is planned for the 23rd, unless we can get all the pre-op stuff done and there is a cancellation for the OR.

The easiest procedure would be a wedge resection just taking out the mass a... Tue, 1 Jul 2014 22:37:58 EST Crunch Time All the tests are done and the results are in.

I got a call from the doctor a little while ago. She had just seen the results of the breathing function test that was done yesterday and the PET Scan that was done this morning. The PET Scan was done from my chin to my knees and all organs in between. The data suggests the nodule "most probably" cancer but there is no evidence that it has spread anywhere else.

The pulmonary dept is recommending removal of the nodule and ... Thu, 26 Jun 2014 22:19:05 EST Another Udpate I got a call from Dr. Cella at the Pulmonary Clinic at the VA Hospital in Seattle at 8:45 this morning. She is in her Residency (UW Medicine) there and is working under the Pulmonologist doctors.

1. The mass has been growing over the past 19 months. It's in the upper lobe of the right lung.

2. I will be getting calls from the VA hospital in Seattle about scheduling a breathing test and a PET Scan. The PET Scan will tell us more about the nodule.

3. After ... Wed, 18 Jun 2014 12:57:40 EST Speed Bump Update I had my appointment with the pulmonologist today. He said that the symptoms of my chest heaviness and shortness of breath are common with COPD. He is requesting lung/breathing tests to access that. He put a urgent on the request.

He is also ordering a PET Scan as the next step to compare with the CT Scans for the mass in my lung. He put urgent on that one too. They don't want to use the "c" word yet. I have a followup appointment with him on 7/29 unless the tests show that som... Tue, 17 Jun 2014 23:49:59 EST Another Speed Bump On Monday night my hubby took me in to the ER because of chest pain and shortness of breath. This has happened in the past but with my aneurysm we went to be on the safe side...

They did a CT Scan of my chest and compared it to ones done on 9/3/12 and 3/26/13. In 9/12 there was a small soft tissue mass in my right lung that measured 6 mm. It was 13 mm on Monday. The ER doctor who saw me just happened to be the same one who saw me in 2012 and 2013. Talk about God's providence. He s... Sat, 14 Jun 2014 12:58:54 EST Feeling Down I am not doing so well emotionally and haven't for the past few days. I don't deal well with death and there has been another in the family. It was one of my cousins who I have known since I was 3 years old. She was 15 at the time. My family has always been very closely knit with cousins- to 2nd and 3rd - as close as siblings. We have family reunions every 2 years and it seems that with each one there is one or 2 missing due to death. At the reunion in 2008 we had over 175 adult, over 3... Wed, 26 Feb 2014 13:25:53 EST Another Hubby Update Hubby got taken off 2 of his meds!! 244 One was a blood thinner and the other was one of the 2 he was taking to regulate his heart rate. And both can damage the heart muscle. His left ventricle is still weakened but digitalis is supposed to strengthen it and regulate the heart rate so he is still on that one.

His heart is still beating in normal rhythm so the doctor doesn't need to see him for 3 to 4 months which I take as a really good sign. They will do another ec... Mon, 23 Sep 2013 22:37:39 EST FYI I received an e-mail this morning with a link to an interesting article. I had thought about putting a post on all my SparkTeams but this way is just as good to reach my SparkFriends. Here's the link.

ish/

When I read this article it actually made me nauseous. I am a Vegan and haven't eaten fish for a year now but I live with my carnivore DH and do research on the internet in an attempt to educate him. He does like some o... Thu, 5 Sep 2013 15:18:54 EST Hallelujah!! Okay... Maybe an extreme title for some...

BUT!!

I had an awesome day at Church this morning! The Holy Spirit was moving and we were all blessed.

A young man was waiting for the doors to open to be baptized when our pastor showed up. Pastor asked the young man if he was saved and he said "not yet". But he knew that he wanted to be baptized!! Pastor counseled him and told him about salvation through Christ Jesus. The young man asked to be led in prayer so... Sun, 25 Aug 2013 22:08:59 EST Another Hubby Update Clyde's cast is off and he has a wrist brace to wear when he is going to be using his hand. The x-rays of his left wrist and forearm show good bone "knitting". No surgery! Praise God!! God is good! Fri, 23 Aug 2013 01:53:13 EST YAH! My SparkCoach trial was due to end in 2 or 3 days. I love it and the motivation so much that I joined today for a year. It is going to be a great help after reaching my goals and giving me incentive to make higher goals. Fri, 23 Aug 2013 01:47:09 EST It Worked!! - Hubby Update I want to thank every one for your prayers and encouragement.

At 11 am this morning, Clyde was anesthetized and the electrical cardioversion was done. He came out of the anesthesia at 11:55 and was in recovery until 1 pm. His heart has been restored to normal rhythm! There is damage to his left ventricle so he is starting a new med to keep his heart in normal rhythm. They are also phasing out the Digoxin and replacing it with Lisinopril. He has a follow-up appointment with the... Wed, 21 Aug 2013 21:42:40 EST Hubby On Wednesday, August 21, my hubby Clyde is undergoing a procedure to try to get his heart out of A-Fib and back in normal rhythm. They are going to stop his heart and "reboot" it.

I am asking for prayer from all my SP buddies. Not for me. For Clyde and his doctors. I have given this situation, like all my life and those I love, to God for HIS will to be done. I can't take that back by worry or doubt. If it is God's will that it is time for Clyde to go home, I will accept that... Tue, 20 Aug 2013 01:02:26 EST Spark Coach Day 3 of Spark Coach and I am keeping consistent with completing assigned tasks. It feels really good to have this tool for making sure I track daily. It is also helping me to eat breakfast which I used to skip during the week. It's amazing that I don't feel famished by lunch. Gee, the experts were right! Duh. 246 Mon, 19 Aug 2013 17:58:54 EST Weigh-In Update On 5/24, I had my first weekly weigh-in at WW. I only lost .2 pound. But it was a loss which is good.

Yesterday, 5/31, I had my second. I was all geared up for a weight gain. With being DH's walking support because of his fractured hip and worrying more about his comfort than my "program" I thought I had blown my "D" word. I got on the scales, ready to cringe. I was told I had lost 3.8 pounds! When I said, "Are you sure??" she said, "Come over and look at the screen. You lo... Sat, 1 Jun 2013 12:43:27 EST Weigh In Tomorrow Okay, I added Weight Watchers to my routine. I thought I'd give it a try since there are weekly meetings, local members to chat one-on-one with and accurate scales. My meetings are on Friday. Hopefully I have lost at least 1/2 pound. My goal is 1/2 a pound a week til 30 pounds are gone. And then keeping it off this time.

I am not discounting all the help I have gotten from SP and I plan to keep active here too. I just need the "personal" touch just now. I'm going through a ... Thu, 23 May 2013 21:30:03 EST OOPS!! Well, I guess I am getting to almost start over on weight loss. I got on the scales on Friday and I have gained back 30 pounds. Mid-life really stinks!! I was going to keep my mouth shut and not admit it, even to myself, but that would be dishonest and counter-productive. SO, time for round 2 of weight loss. Sun, 19 May 2013 21:31:57 EST Merry White Christmas We received something for Christmas that we usually don't get. It is actually 425 425 . We are getting a White 446 460 !! I know that this doesn't sound all that unusual for most of the Northern 1/3 of the US but for the Pacific Northwest it is. We usually wake up to 27 257 on Christmas. Same weather, different day. For an area that rains 7-9 months out of the year, this is a treat. I'm going to enjoy it while I ca... Tue, 25 Dec 2012 13:18:56 EST One Day at a Time I am now living in almost constant back pain but I still manage to get on with life. All of my fitness minutes now are from walking. It doesn't cause undue strain on my back and in some cases eases the muscle tightness. I thank God each day that He gives me the strength to do what is necessary and to live with the pain. One of my favorite inspirational quotes is, "I will neither murmur nor repine at what the Lord's providence may permit, because Faith can trust Him, come what may".
... Mon, 2 Jul 2012 17:13:32 EST Goal Met and Happy New Year I met my goal 4 days early on Dec 29, goal date was 1/1/12. I am now 100% lacto-ovo vegetarian. My new goal is to be 100% Vegan by 6/30/12, my 58th birthday.

I have learned a lot this year from all my SparkFriends, Teams and all the helpful articles on SparkPeople. I am truly thankful for SparkGuy for making all this available to us. I had already known about portion control, lowering fats, eating more veggies and fruit before discovering SP. Through reading "The Spark" and th... Sat, 31 Dec 2011 15:33:09 EST I got my Christmas wish! The cast came off yesterday. My mobility and range of motion for my wrist is, according to the doctor "Better than I would have expected without surgery". It is still a little weak so he gave me a splint similar to the "boot casts" they have for ankles. He wants me to use it for about 2 weeks. I also have a set of exercises to strengthen the muscles and tendons.

Now to detox my system to purge it of the pain pill residue. 30

Thank you all for your prayer... Wed, 21 Dec 2011 16:33:41 EST Praise God Okay, that may be early...

I am praying that my cast comes off on the 20th, Tuesday. If not... I will deal with that then.

I am able to type with both hands, but only at 15 or 20 words per minute, normally I type 90 words a minute on a bad day. It causes discomfort to my arm, palm of the hand, fingers, etc. I am doing what a physical therapist would have me do with a physical therapy ball to strengthen the hand and fingers by typing with the cast still on. Been ther... Sat, 17 Dec 2011 03:07:37 EST Faith Faith is:

Believing before seeing. Heb 11:1

Having what we NEED - not our wants - a real biggie. God gives to us so abundantly. Those of us who are blessed more than others should see it as our duty to bless others.

Not listening to an earthly man (preacher) but searching the scriptures daily for our guidance. "Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free".

Keeping our spirituality and life free from ridicule. The world wants to nega... Fri, 2 Dec 2011 05:15:22 EST Still Healing My wrist is still healing. I have better use of my fingers and thumb so with using them more it explains the "different" pain I feel now. Like my favorite scripture says, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me".

I am still in a cast, Dec 20th will be 6 weeks and 3 days since I broke it. I am praying that the cast comes off on the 20th. It would be nice to have total use of the arm and hand before Christmas. 30 Thu, 1 Dec 2011 05:26:19 EST Arm Update I had a doctor's appt today for my wrist. They took 3 x-rays and the bones are mending good, better than any of us expected without surgery. I have a follow-up on Dec 20th.

I'm still on pain meds but the dr said that will lessen as the swelling decreases. The pain, he explained is from his molding the cast to force the tendons to remain taut while the bones mend so the tiny bones in the top of the hand don't shift toward the wrist.

I can deal with the pain, it is the ... Tue, 22 Nov 2011 23:55:31 EST Woo-Hoo Today is my 517 .

A lot has happened in that 3 months.

I am living a healthier lifestyle, not a total veg yet but working on it. I feel better each day about the positive changes in my life.

I am getting more exercise, even if it is just a walk. On rainy days I go to the mall and window shop so I can get my steps in without getting soaked or blown away by wind.

My weight loss has been slow but consistent. The first 15 or so dropped quic... Thu, 17 Nov 2011 14:28:07 EST Update on Arm Had a follow-up with the dr today. They took x-rays and found that I will not need surgery. The break is healing and is 3/4 the way to normal. There will be a little dis-figuration but nothing that will keep me from having full use of it. The splint was replaced with a short cast - I chose purple - and I have a follow-up next Tuesday. Tue, 15 Nov 2011 18:17:08 EST Ouch! I will be semi-out-of-commission for a few days, maybe weeks.

I fell and broke both bones in my wrist at 7:30 last night. On the up-side, it is my left and I am right handed.

By the time we got to the hospital, I was in shock. One nurse, maybe she was doing her first ER part of training, missed 2 veins for the IV so a different nurse got it in on the 1st try. The x-rays showed a clean break,so hopefully I won't need pins which means 2 surgeries.

I'm getting... Sun, 6 Nov 2011 19:56:45 EST Yikes OMG - 20 Sparkpoints to start the day?? 244 345 Sat, 5 Nov 2011 03:37:01 EST It was a good day I met my nutrition goals for the day, got in my walk without getting wet, the sun was actually shining all day 244 and I feel great at the end of the day!

Ruth Sat, 5 Nov 2011 00:39:37 EST
