Over the last several days, I've had some pain in the bottom part of my foot, right in the arch area. It hurts when I walk, but it's kind of inconsistent, so I'm not really concerned yet. However, I am resting as much as possible and not doing any kind of exercise. I may look for some new running shoes, too. The pair I have is over six months old, so it's probably time to retire them.

I've learned to accept injuries a lot more than I use to. In the past, I would ignore the i... Tue, 1 Apr 2014 11:10:10 EST Back to normal, healthy routine today This past week was a crazy week. After running 7 miles the previous Sunday, the following week sucked as far as getting any kind of running or other exercise in. Then my husband and I left for Ohio (an 8-hour drive) to attend his niece's wedding reception this past weekend. We left on Friday afternoon, drove part-way, stayed overnight at a hotel, and then drove the rest of the way early Saturday. I actually got up Saturday morning, put on my running clothes which I packed, and used the ho... Mon, 31 Mar 2014 09:50:01 EST 7 miles!! Yesterday I accomplished something that was a HUGE milestone for me: I ran 7 miles!

Last year, I signed up to do a 7-mile race that would take place in July. I signed up early (March or April?) and made it my goal in the upcoming months to build up to 7 miles. We ended up having a really hot summer, my training sucked, and I ended up with a stress fracture a couple of weeks before the race. I had to kiss $35 goodbye and my self-confidence was shaken.

Fast forward to J... Mon, 24 Mar 2014 09:02:44 EST We all inspire each other! Since I became vegan four years ago and started my running journey, two of my friends have become vegan because they saw what it did for me and they wanted to do the same. Several friends have commented that my running journey inspires them to want to work out more.

Yesterday, though, I got the biggest compliment of all. My oldest daughter, who is 20 and struggles with an anxiety disorder, told me that I have inspired her to be more healthy. Over the last several months, she has... Fri, 21 Mar 2014 09:01:51 EST New goals As I wrote the other day, my plans to run a half-marathon in May have changed. I've had a couple of delays which have put a wrench in my training program so I'm not going to be ready for the May 4th half-marathon I had planned on.

But it's ok. I found a new half-marathon on August 31st that is local and looks like it will be a lot of fun. My plan right now is to continue the training program that I'm doing, in hopes that I'll be able to do a trial run of a half-marathon, that wa... Wed, 19 Mar 2014 12:55:25 EST Change of plans I was sick over the weekend. At first I thought it was my allergies acting up, but over the last several days I've had a horrible cough and congestion. I spent the day yesterday in my jammies, resting and staring longingly out the window at the sunny day outside, wishing I was doing the 7-mile run I had planned.

After talking to my family, I decided yesterday that the May 4th half-marathon is just not going to happen. Our youngest daughter graduates in 10 weeks, we have a lot of... Mon, 17 Mar 2014 09:07:37 EST Fall, get up, keep going! Yesterday was a gorgeous day! It was sunny and in the 40's. Signs of spring have finally arrived! The snow is melting, and although things are still a wet, muddy mess in a lot of areas, things are improving. All day yesterday at work I looked forward to going home and running outside.

The run didn't start out so well. First, it had been so long since I'd run outside and used my GPS watch that the battery was low and so I had to plug it in to be charged. Then I couldn't find t... Fri, 14 Mar 2014 10:09:35 EST Week 5 of half-marathon training I'm doing Week 5 of my half-marathon training. Because I fell behind during the recovery of my concussion, I skipped Weeks 2 and 4. Week 2 consisted of a 5-mile run, which I've done several times before, and week 4 was supposed to be a recovery week from the 6-mile run I did on Sunday.

Should I be skipping anything in the program? I'm not really sure. I've never done a half-marathon before. I just knew that if I followed the program to a tee, I would miss the half-marathon I'm... Wed, 12 Mar 2014 13:43:17 EST I ran a 10K! Yesterday was week 3 of my half-marathon training program. I was supposed to run 6 miles. Since this was the first week back to running since I took a couple of weeks off due to my concussion, I wasn't sure if I'd be able to do 6 miles. I figured I'd shoot for 5 miles.

I got on the treadmill and after running a couple of miles, I'd made up my mind that not only was I going to run 6 miles, but that I would do 6.2 so that I could say I'd finally run a 10K! After about 4 miles, ... Mon, 10 Mar 2014 09:44:08 EST Running again and creating a web page The headaches from the concussion I sustained almost two weeks ago are completely gone. Not running these last couple of weeks have been horrible. Running is my stress reliever. Running is my exercise. Running is......well, it's such a huge part of my life now. I miss it so much when I'm not able to do it. I can't wait to get my running shoes on tonight after work! I even downloaded an audiobook so that I'll have something to listen to while I run this week.

Over the weeke... Mon, 3 Mar 2014 16:38:25 EST Half-marathon training temporarily delayed... Last Thursday while walking to the van for work, I slipped on a patch of ice and got a nasty blow to the head! I ended up in the ER with a mild concussion, and for a couple of days had some nasty dizziness and head pain. The dizziness has gotten better, but I'm still dealing with the headache, and I have some muscle soreness in my neck and ribs, though that is getting better.

I have no idea when I'll be able to run again. Until this headache goes away, I just don't know. And th... Mon, 24 Feb 2014 09:52:53 EST Day 5 of Half-Marathon Training Last night I needed to run 3 miles. I got on the treadmill and about 2 minutes into the run, I just wasn't feeling it. My stomach was bothering me and my legs felt heavy and weak. What the hell? About 5 more minutes into the run, thinking that I was going to be lucky if I could make it to a mile, I looked down and realized the treadmill was on an incline. Well, that explained things! Once I was at 0 incline, the run went much better after that! I was able to complete 3 miles! I realiz... Fri, 14 Feb 2014 09:13:06 EST Day 4 of Half-Marathon Training Day 4 was a rest/cross-train day. I was scheduled to go to a parent-teacher conference after work, and so I thought I would have a rest day, but the conference was cancelled and so I ended up doing a Zumba workout. I love doing Zumba! I love to dance, and this workout is not only a fun way to get my dance on, but it also works my core and my arms.

Last night's dinner consisted of a large baked potato, which I cut up and ate with a big bowl of romaine lettuce and dressing that I ... Thu, 13 Feb 2014 08:54:31 EST Day 3 of Half-Marathon Training Day 3 consisted of running 3 miles. Now that I'm able to run 3 miles on a regular basis, I've started focusing on my time. My goal for the half-marathon is to FINISH. Period. I'm not going to worry about my time or how slow I go. FINISHING is the goal. That being said, when I'm running the shorter distances, like 2, 3 or even 4 miles, I want to get faster. I just can't help myself. I think that this is one of the reasons that running is so addicting. It's that constant desire to bett... Wed, 12 Feb 2014 09:05:05 EST Day 2 - Half-marathon training Day 2 of the No Meat Athlete half-marathon training program consisted of running two miles. I can remember when running two miles was a huge accomplishment for me; now it's my "easy" run!

It is a chore running two miles on the treadmill, however. I cannot wait until the weather improves and I can take my runs outdoors again. It's already mid-February, and I noticed last night as I looked out the window while running on the treadmill that it was still light outside, when only a f... Tue, 11 Feb 2014 08:44:13 EST Half-marathon training Day 1 Yesterday was my first day of half-marathon training and oddly enough, it was a cross-training day, so I didn't run.. Instead I did a 50-minute Zumba workout. The training weeks start on Sundays and Sundays are cross-training and/or foam-rolling days. Tonight I will get to run 2 miles, which will have to be on the treadmill because the temperatures are once again below zero here.

I'm so excited to finally start my training program! The next few weeks are going to be busy for me... Mon, 10 Feb 2014 09:08:58 EST Is it spring yet? I keep looking at the extended forecast, waiting to see that sunny, in the 40's or 50's day coming up. Hasn't happened yet. Still snowy and cold. Bummer.

I'm still struggling with the winter blues, although I've been taking Vitamin D and B12 supplements, and that has helped a lot. My energy level is still good, so most days I'm able to motivate myself to workout. I really enjoy working out and feel anxious when I can't fit it into my daily schedule.

I'm still strugg... Thu, 6 Feb 2014 09:36:39 EST Miles ran in January I ran about 40 miles this month. Definitely not anything that's Runners' World newsworthy or anything, but considering the weather we've had, and having a battle with winter blues, I'm pretty proud of this accomplishment. I can't tell you how many days I came home from work and just wanted to put on my PJs, drink wine, and watch Netflix for the rest of the night. But I didn't. I put on my workout clothes and I either ran on the treadmill or did Zumba! I did have the occasional slacker mo... Fri, 31 Jan 2014 11:16:12 EST Maui 5K! A new PR! Ok, first a disclaimer: I didn't really run in Maui.

But I did run the Maui 5K course, thanks to our new treadmill! Not only that, I PR'ed! I ran in under 34 minutes!

I had no idea what to expect when I selected the course on my treadmill and pressed START. I ran the fastest I've ever run, I ran at inclines, at about 1.5 miles I wanted to quit because it was HARD. But I kept pressing on and I finished and I was so proud of myself!

So now that I've run ... Wed, 29 Jan 2014 09:11:09 EST New treadmill! I had decided that this would be the year that I run outside during the winter season. Normally I would spend the winter indoors running on my treadmill. However, the display of my very old treadmill pooped out on me several months ago, so instead of spending money on a new treadmill, I decided that I would just run outdoors. As the weather started getting colder, I discovered that I actually run better when the temperatures are cooler. I bought some winter weather gear to keep me warm, a... Wed, 22 Jan 2014 09:01:31 EST Feeling off Yesterday was a weird day for me. I was feeling off my game. I didn't have any energy. I ate healthy meals and snacks, but still felt hungry and when I got home from work, I just couldn't find the energy to work out. I took a shower, put on my PJs and prepared dinner. I didn't drink any wine (like I normally would on a bad day), and although I kept eyeing the pantry for something I could munch on, I didn't eat anything until dinner was ready.

My husband could tell something wa... Thu, 16 Jan 2014 10:20:56 EST Stayed on track this weekend! It was a great weekend! I stayed focused on my healthy habits by working out both Saturday and Sunday, and I ate lots of fruits and veggies. I stuck with one glass of wine on Saturday and Sunday night with dinner. I woke up this morning feeling really good.

The key was finding some plant-based groups on Facebook. I have people that I can easily communicate with regularly throughout the weekend. Their posts inspire me to stay on track and it's great to be able to share workouts... Mon, 13 Jan 2014 09:23:00 EST Voyage to Venus Wow, what a week it has been! On Monday, I felt like the loneliest vegan on Earth; since then, I've connected with three communities!

It started with a suggestion from a fellow Sparkperson to join the Plant Based Peeps on Facebook. What an awesome group of people! They share whole, plant-based, oil-free recipes, vent about the woes of being vegan, etc. My phone hasn't stopped buzzing with notifications since I joined! It's so nice to talk to people with whom I have so much i... Fri, 10 Jan 2014 14:55:34 EST More fruits and veggies? Yes please! After waking up Monday morning feeling remorseful and depressed from the weekend of eating nothing but junk and drinking too much, the week has improved greatly! I've worked out every night this week, I've eaten more servings of fruits and veggies than ever before, and I've really tried to make mindful choices when it comes to eating.

Sitting in front of the TV at night usually brings a bout of the munchies. I start doing a mental inventory of what kind of snacks I have in the pa... Thu, 9 Jan 2014 13:40:29 EST Just ask. I've always been a pretty shy person, and I don't like depending on others and so I've always been pretty independent and tend to do things on my own. Therefore, asking for help has always been something I'm uncomfortable with.

When I chose to start eating plant-based, I didn't base it on whether or not anyone else around me was doing it. I did it because I felt like it was the right thing for me to do. Then, when I made the decision to start running, I chose to do so because it... Tue, 7 Jan 2014 09:04:59 EST Winter blues :-( It is -30 degrees here today with the windchill. It was cold all weekend. Friday night after work, I drove home in minus degree weather and snow blowing and drifting on the roads. I was so relieved to arrive home safely, but instead of rewarding myself with a run on the treadmill like I had planned, I ate a bowl of chips and drank wine instead. On Saturday, the day was busy with running errands and doing chores around the house and then my husband and I went out on Saturday night to meet ... Mon, 6 Jan 2014 08:55:32 EST Looking back at 2013 I just read through my blogs from 2013. Wow, it was such a great year! Did I meet my running goals for the year? No. Did I eat perfectly and lose a bunch of weight? No. Did I have bad days? Yes. Did I have disappointments? Yes.

None of that matters, though. When I look back at 2013, I feel nothing but positive. Although I didn't run the races that I had hoped to run, my love of running continued to grow. Although I didn't eat perfectly, my days of eating plant-based, wh... Fri, 3 Jan 2014 10:15:33 EST A new look The last several days have been a bit challenging. I've been having some foot pain, so I've taken some time off of running, which is killing me. But I know from past mistakes that if I don't rest when I start to have a pain in one of my joints, it will turn into something much worse. I feel like a total slug right now, but I know that it's just temporary and I'll have my running shoes back on in no time!

Also, since yesterday, I have felt some sort of cold or flu virus creeping ... Wed, 18 Dec 2013 08:57:55 EST Random thoughts... I've been craving fruit a LOT these days. Particularly oranges. No, wait, not just oranges: those addicting candy created by Mother Nature called CUTIES. O...M....G....I could eat a whole box of these babies in one sitting.

Although I call myself a vegan, I still have my moments of weakness when I eat cheese or eggs. This usually only happens when I eat at restaurants. I'm still shy about asking for special menu items, but I'm working on this and I'm getting better at it, but ... Fri, 13 Dec 2013 15:57:27 EST My holiday running streak status Since Thanksgiving, I have run every day but 2 days. Not what I'd call a streak, but I'm still happy with my performance. There were some nights when I came home and my family thought I was crazy to be going outside to run, but I did it! And while most days I have a regular schedule of when I run (right after I get home from work during the week and in the mornings during the weekend), there have been days when I've had to run at odd times, just so I can say that I got a run in that day. <... Thu, 12 Dec 2013 15:41:22 EST Reflections on my Thanksgiving holiday This was the first Thanksgiving, since becoming a vegan almost 4 years ago, that my entire Thanksgiving meal was vegan, from the potatoes, to the green bean casserole, to even dessert! With the exception of the turkey and pie, my husband and daughters ate a vegan Thanksgiving feast - and LOVED it! They even loved my vegan version of a double-layer pumpkin cheesecake! I think we finally finished up the last of the leftovers yesterday. Thank goodness! I just can't resist the temptation of ... Mon, 2 Dec 2013 16:58:47 EST An 8-day running streak in the books Today was supposed to be the 9th day of my running streak. Normally I run after work, but tonight I have a work party and so my plan was to get up extra early this morning and get a couple of miles in. I usually get up earlier two mornings a week to get in a strengthening workout, so I didn't think getting up a bit earlier would be a problem.

Here's what I forgot to take into consideration: it's really dark at 4:30 in the morning. No one else is up at 4:30 in the morning. As it... Tue, 19 Nov 2013 09:04:05 EST 7-day running streak so far! This past week, I ran every day! Some of the runs were short, but I made sure that I ran at least 1-1/2 miles, and most days I ran more than that. I ran a total of 16 miles, which is the most that I've run in a week in quite a while, so I'm pretty pleased with myself. Yesterday I ran for 4 miles, and it felt great!

Best of all, I haven't experienced any pain or soreness from running every day, so I think that I will try to keep up the streak through the holidays. Tomorrow will ... Mon, 18 Nov 2013 10:15:15 EST Holiday running streak I recently read an article in this month's issue of Runners' World magazine in which a guy decided to do a holiday running streak, in which he would run every day from Thanksgiving through New Year's. The only requirement was that he had to run every day, a minimum of one mile. He ran in the snow, the rain, the cold temps, in between getting ready for family to visit during was challenging, but he loved the benefits he received from doing this streak: no holiday weight gain ... Fri, 15 Nov 2013 08:43:57 EST Just a bad day, moving on.... Yesterday was not a good day. In fact, I blogged about it, but then ended up deleting the blog post because I just didn't want to dwell on negative things. I chose to be vegan because I care about animals and I want to do my part to end the suffering of animals, but along this journey, I had hoped that more people would feel the way I do. Although I meet lots of people online who share my beliefs, my immediate surrounding community of family, friends, and co-workers don't. I admit that th... Thu, 14 Nov 2013 09:26:55 EST A new level of running It snowed yesterday! As I looked out of the window in my office, watching the snowflakes come down, do you know what I was thinking? "Man, I wish I could go outside and run right now!" Instead, I had to wait until I got home from work to run. By then the snow had stopped, there was just a light coating on everything, it was dark outside, and there was a cold, blustery wind. Do you know what I did? I put on my running tights, my jacket, a knit cap, gloves, and my headlamp, and Maggie the... Tue, 12 Nov 2013 10:48:41 EST Wow, it's been an exciting few days! :) I'm exhausted today, but feeling so happy and blessed! It started last Wednesday, when I got my second tattoo for my anniversary present. I got my first tattoo last year for my anniversary present, so I think this may be an annual event!

I love this tattoo! It is a constant reminder of how I need to let things go that are out of my control! Whenever I start to get anxious, or worried, or upset, I ... Mon, 11 Nov 2013 12:45:00 EST I feel beautiful - finally! As the day of the party to celebrate my husband's and my 25th wedding anniversary quickly approaches, I can't help but look back at how I've grown and changed through the years. The last few years have been monumental for me: I became a vegetarian and then eventually vegan, I lost weight, I started running, I quit a job that I hated, and I even got a tattoo! I overcame my fears and tried new things. I stopped worrying about going along with the status quo. I started making choices that ma... Tue, 5 Nov 2013 09:04:32 EST My 1st 5K Trail Race

My daughter and I ran a 5K yesterday and the course was on a trail. This was the first time that I've done a course that was 100% trail. The course was at a recreational area and it was a gorgeous day! The weather was chilly, but the leaves on the trees are just blazing in color right now, and the view was simply breathtaking!

We h... Mon, 4 Nov 2013 09:31:53 EST Happy World Vegan Day! Today is World Vegan Day! I had no idea until I saw it on Facebook! Hooray! Another reason to celebrate being vegan! 224

I became a vegan about 3-1/2 years ago. Since then, I've lost weight, I'm the healthiest and happiest I've ever been, and I am a runner!

There is no going back for me. I could never, ever eat another piece of meat. Maybe if it was the zombie apocalypse, and I was starving, and I needed to eat to survive....but even then, I think I... Fri, 1 Nov 2013 09:22:05 EST Healthy? Halloween Party Every month at work, I plan a party over the lunch hour to celebrate that month's birthdays. Generally, these parties are not very healthy, and I usually end up bringing my own food because there is never anything for a plant-based eater. Last month, we had a tailgating-themed party and everyone decided that we were eating too much junk and could we please have something healthier next time? Wow! Okay!

So today we had a Halloween-themed party to celebrate the October birthday... Thu, 31 Oct 2013 14:33:34 EST Colds, the flu shot, and running in winter It was a beautiful weekend! I went to a baby shower on Saturday and I was able to resist the non-vegan cake and punch that was offered. I got a few strange looks from some of the women as they all sat chatting and eating their cake, while I sat and visited, eating NOTHING. The hostess knew I was vegan and was very apologetic for not having anything for me to eat, but I told her it wasn't a problem, and she was not offended at all that I didn't eat anything, so it was all good!

Y... Mon, 28 Oct 2013 09:25:40 EST Running in cold weather I've been running for over three years now, and I've never liked running in colder weather. I would usually just run on the treadmill during the cool weather months. Three things have changed, however, that have made me decide that this winter will be different:

1. There is a puppy in our household that loves to run or walk outside every night when I get home from work. Puppies don't understand that it's too cold, or too wet. And I can't ignore those sad puppy eyes when we hav... Thu, 24 Oct 2013 09:30:27 EST Inspiring movie I stayed home from work yesterday to take care of my daughter, who wasn't feeling well (even at 17, they still need mom to stay home and take care of them 41 ). I watched a documentary on Netflix called "The Spirit of the Marathon". Oh my gosh, it was such a great movie! The movie followed 6 people on their journey to run the Chicago marathon. For some of the runners, it was their first time and for some it wasn't their first marathon, but they were striving to reach a goal (t... Tue, 22 Oct 2013 10:30:54 EST Cooking at home I don't know if other vegans or just people living a healthier lifestyle in general experience this, but I find myself enjoying eating out less and less. First of all, it's hard enough trying to find vegan options, but overall, I think it's just harder to find healthy stuff to eat. The temptations of eating things that aren't good for me are just too hard to resist when I'm at restaurants.

In the past, we would tend to eat out on busy nights and weekends. I would feel too tire... Fri, 18 Oct 2013 09:37:27 EST Changing my workout routine We have a puppy in the house, and our lives have been turned completely upside down! Our 20-year-old daughter is living at home while attending school full time and working part time. About 6 months ago, she asked us if she could adopt a dog of her own. We already own two dogs, but she felt like she really needed a dog of her own. She agreed to pay all expenses, and that she would have complete responsibility of the dog. Our daughter suffers from anxiety disorder, and although a dog mean... Thu, 17 Oct 2013 09:10:27 EST 25th wedding anniversary coming up....a look back. My husband and I have been together for over 25 years now, and we are celebrating our wedding anniversary with a big party next month, and then a small weekend getaway at a B&B in December for our actual anniversary.
Lately I can't help but think back about the years we've been together. We were married pretty young, I was 22 and David was 23. David was in the military at the time, and we decided to have a spur-of-the-moment wedding two weeks before he was scheduled to go on a 6-mont... Wed, 16 Oct 2013 12:23:21 EST 5K pics I forgot to post pics of the race! Also, the official results are in and although I didn't run as fast I had hoped, it's still a PR for me: 34:42, and I got 2nd in my age group! Go me! 224

Mon, 14 Oct 2013 12:03:44 EST My best 5K yet! I ran a 5K yesterday, and although I don't know my official time yet, I'm hoping it's a PR. The race started at 9:10 yesterday a.m., and I went in relaxed and feeling like it would be just another workout for me. The weather was perfect! Sunny, and just a bit chilly. Once the race started, a large amount of people, including my husband and daughter, raced ahead of me. I chose, however, to run at my slow, relaxed pace because I knew that if I started out at too fast a pace, I'd run out of ... Mon, 14 Oct 2013 10:17:34 EST My saving grace My psyche continues to be plagued with worry and anxiety. I think it's this thing with our government. Now we have the impending government default on it's bills if Congress can't agree to work something out. I worry about how this will affect our already paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle. Money is always a worry and source of anxiety for me.

Luckily, I have found something to help me cope with my anxiety: EXERCISE and HEALTHY EATING. These things are like medicine from the gods.... Wed, 9 Oct 2013 09:19:15 EST
