RUMBAMEL's SparkPeople Blog RUMBAMEL's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Ok, so I'm not a Vegetarian... Well, I tried it,being a vegetarian, and it's not for my body. I did it for about 7 months and ended up gaining about 15 lbs. I was pretty good at it and only had a few slip ups and went right back to eating my fruits, veggies, grains and dairy. I tried new and exciting foods. I was really on the border before, so it wasn't much of a transition for me anyway. I was getting the hang of it with the family by making two different dishes or setting aside a portion for myself and then adding ... Thu, 13 Jun 2013 10:48:40 EST Trying to be Vegetarian, turned 40 and balancing... Well, after Thanksgiving I felt bloated and yucky. I didn't really eat much meat, I usually didn't anyway, but this time I just felt different. I decided to make a change. My younger sister had told me she had become Vegetarian and my good friend and exercise buddy had become Vegan, so I figured I would try it, at least, for a bit to cleanse. Well, it stuck for the most part until I got a migraine. They are my downfall. I ate some Mexican, beef nachos. One night, then back to vegetaria... Sun, 27 Jan 2013 21:11:05 EST To DisneyWorld and Back!!! Lots of pics!! Well, I made it to Disney World and back in one piece!!! I am the driver because I get sick reading in the car and thus can't navigate. The trip was 973.56 miles to our resort in Clermont, so we had to stop at a hotel both ways. I'll break the trip up into categories: Travel, Food, Entertainment, Accommodations and Extras.

TRAVEL: It rained A LOT on the way there and so much that I was driving about 30 mph or less on the highway!! Go figure leaving 100+ degrees here in St. Lou... Thu, 26 Jul 2012 21:50:11 EST Day 4: Pizza?? It's ok! Frozen yogurt, too! Pizza you say, yes, we love it! We have an awesome take and bake company near us that we absolutely love. The owners also own a frozen yogurt shop two doors down. The pizza place is Papa Murphy's and the frozen yogurt is Orange Leaf. We frequent them often. Sometimes we get the yogurt 1st and then get the take home pizza. hehehe

My daughter slept 12 hours yesterday and didn't wake until 9am. I'm not sure how long she would have slept because my son went into her room and she... Wed, 11 Jul 2012 10:42:19 EST Day 3: Home all day and it helped Well, I think it's working! I was home all day with the kids yesterday. We even managed to have some friends come over for a playdate. Now this was not the original plan, of course. I wanted to walk around with the kids in the morning and then go to the bookstore to read where we would possible meet the friends and then come back here for lunch or a pladate or both. But my 8 year old threw a fit that lasted an hour and I only had time to take a shower with no exercise again.

... Tue, 10 Jul 2012 10:04:49 EST Day 2: Taco Bell and all is well! Well, I woke with a tight left side of my neck and head hurting. It continued all day. I tried all day to push through it. My pregnant niece came over in the midst of our Disney itinerary planning. They wanted us to order something on Amazon for them because they were going to do it, but they used all their funds on the card they were going to use for it....always so complicated with them. They cave us the $6.63 in exchange for it. She also wanted to discuss her pregnancy nerves.
... Mon, 9 Jul 2012 14:15:45 EST Day 1 of Recommital: ups and downs Well, I have recommitted and day 1 had ups and downs. I got up and wogged or jalked (hehe) jog/walked for 41 minutes yesterday about 7am. I felt very good when I got back, but hot and sweaty. I tried to cool off by slowing down a bit first and then coming in. I guess I didn't cool off enough. I drank 1/2 a Revive Vitamin Water and ate 3 Peanut Butter Lance crackers. I was doing fine until a couple hours later. My neck, eyes and jaw begin to hurt. I had my husband and son massage my ... Sun, 8 Jul 2012 09:46:32 EST My numbers! What they mean to me. Ok, I'm hopefully done and changing today. I have a graduate degree in Math so I think about numbers a lot. When I went from 163 lbs. to 110 lbs. initially, that was an awesome fete. It was 53 lbs. lost or 32.5 % of my body weight gone!!! I'm only 5'2", so gaining and losing little bits on a small frame make a big difference.

I began this summer at about 114 and was hoping to get more exercise in with the kids at parks and at the gym or just being active outside. They love ... Fri, 6 Jul 2012 16:33:24 EST Time for a serious change!! Ok, so this year hasn't been going so great from the beginning. Well, it started back in mid-Dec. with being stressed out from searching for a puppy and then getting the puppy on Dec. 29th. With all of the searching, getting the pup, and kids and husband being out of school/work for Christmas break, I wasn't able to keep my regular chiropractor visits or my regular exercise routines going. In the beginning of Jan., my husband's 49 year old Aunt got in a car accident and died. It was total... Mon, 20 Feb 2012 16:22:33 EST Brownie is going to a new home :) :( Well, we have all come to the same conclusion, mostly. My husband's sister and family will be taking Brownie for us this weekend. They may keep or if it doesn't work out, then his other sister which really wants her and already has a dog will also take her. They wanted her when we visited at Christmas time.

Abby, 8 yesterday, is still a little hesitant, but as the days get closer and closer to the exchange date, she understands and seems to accept that it is a better choice for ... Thu, 16 Feb 2012 14:07:48 EST Another jogging sickness!!!! Ok, so I haven't really jogged since Christmas, but I did go to Kettlebell class the last two Fridays and did a bit of jogging (slower paced) on Sunday or Monday of this past week. So I didn't feel like I was completely void of exercise. I went to the gym on Wednesday and warmed up on the treadmill as usual and then boost it up to 6 mph for about 6-7 min. then back down to 4.5 for a couple min. to catch my breath. Then back up for another 6-8 min., then back down to 4.8 mph for a couple. ... Thu, 19 Jan 2012 09:43:14 EST Our new puppy is here....Brownie! Brownie is here and boy is she cute!! Santa left Abby a note at our house while we were out of town letting Abby know that they can't leave pets in empty houses, but that he thought she deserved one. He left a doggy bowl and a leash and said that Mommy and Daddy would get her a doggy.

We took the kids to a couple shelters on Wednesday and visited with 4 dogs. Abby liked one, but it was way too hairy, otherwise great. Two others were about 3 years old and very very shy. The las... Fri, 30 Dec 2011 18:13:13 EST Turkey Day at the In-Laws! The food choices here at the in-laws are awful. Basically the only healthy thing to eat was the turkey. I'm not that fond of turkey, but had a very small sliver. They had stuffing, sweet glazed ham, two types of taters (one with bacon YUM! and one with lots of butter), canned corn and canned green beans both cooked with bacon fat, oily sweet slaw and mac and cheese shells. Oh, oh, oh, don't forget the 5 containers of crescent rolls.

They had pumpkin pie (I don't eat it), 4 laye... Fri, 25 Nov 2011 17:25:16 EST I did a bad bad thing.... I meant to just take a nice brisk 2 or so mile walk this morning since I haven't exercised much at all since being sick for over 3 weeks. I've been eating horribly during this time also. I chose a bike/walk path near our house that runs along the Metro Link, because my friend told me this trail was 2 miles. Well......., I checked my phone after 1/2 mile then again at 1 1/2 miles and figured it can't be too much farther. I didn't recognize the houses and buildings around me, but was feelin... Mon, 14 Nov 2011 18:36:30 EST A visit to the in-laws.... Ok, so we went to the in-laws for the weekend. Some of you may know the story of what happens when we go down there. Basically, the food is now where near healthy and since the the town is one of those "blink and you might miss it" towns, exercise is limited to walking. However, watch out for the burning of trash, yard waste and EVERYTHING else.

Since we hadn't been in a while, we decided to stay for two nights and hope our allergies survive. We rushed so we could have dinn... Sun, 21 Aug 2011 18:49:10 EST What is Geo Caching you say? The family did some Geo Caching on Sunday and had a blast! My daughter, 7 yrs. old did some at a Girl Scout camp and since my son, 6 yrs old, was a tag-a-long, he got to do it as well. They told Daddy how fun it was, so he looked it up on the internet.

As it turns out there were three of them we could do for free w/out downloading the $10 app. to my iphone. Ok, Ok, OK, on to what it is.....

Geo Caching is basically a GPS treasure hunt that anyone can play. Someone h... Mon, 18 Jul 2011 15:46:55 EST Vacations: Fun or Torture for our Kids We just got back from a vacation to Tennessee on Saturday. Sometimes I wonder if vacations are fun or if they are just torture for the kids (and us a bit, too).

We had five days to fill with activities and fun. We didn't really schedule it out like some vacations, because we wanted to take a more relaxed approach on this one.

Saturday: Check-in after 8pm because it takes 8+ hrs to drive there, then find Walmart and something to eat. We found the first place that ... Sun, 26 Jun 2011 22:24:02 EST Evil little snacks..... Let me start out by saying that I have lost 53 lbs., I used to be 163 and am now maintaining around 110-112 and have been here for over a year. I exercise 20-90 min. 2-4 times a week. I log in EVERY DAY and still track my food. Usually I am pretty good about planning out and balancing my snacks and meals with all my categories. You know: calories, fat, carbs, fiber and protein. Well, at least, I try to say to myself, "I need some protein and fiber in this snack or it won't hold me until ... Fri, 25 Mar 2011 22:15:04 EST ONE rough day! Hey guys, just wanted to share my rough eating day with you all. It started with Friday night going to my daughter's Daisy troop's Look-In at her school. We were to sleep in the gym, yippee! Anyway, I usually count pretty much everything so when they were going to have a snack while watching the movie, I thought about bringing my own, but then figured that the girls would wonder and maybe envy what I had. I wanted to be one of the girls for one night. So, I would just eat what they had. ... Sun, 13 Mar 2011 12:39:39 EST What a Compliment! I was at Walmart yesterday going through my list: Arnold bread Thins, generic Benadryl for the kids, sinus medicine for the husband, hopefully some pumpkin, Dannon Greek yogurt and some fruit. Well, when I stopped at the yogurt I got sequestered by some elderly ladies.

The first lady asked if the Dannon brand was good. I assured her it was quite tasty and even got the approval of my 5 and 6 year old children. Told her it tastes like custard. She lets me know that Activia is c... Fri, 24 Sep 2010 15:17:57 EST Burst of exercise energy! I knew I wanted to go to the gym today with the family, but around 11am it was looking kind of bleak. My 6 year old began to moan and groan about not wanting to go and how nothing in the day was what she wanted....the 4 year old complained not realizing what gym we were going to because he now has a preference. They grumbled through lunch and we finally explained to them that they got to do a scavenger hunt and play a Wii game, but now it was Mom and Dad's turn. Yeah!!!

We got t... Sun, 21 Mar 2010 21:54:08 EST Brownie Bites and husbands!!! I really wish my husband would stop buying the prepackaged cookies/brownies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He recently(within the past 3 weeks) bought 3 packages. Well, they had been sitting in the fridge just fine. I had a playdate and needed something to make. Thankfully, I didn't have time to make them for that day. But I did check dates on them to see which one would need to be used first. Of course, it had to be the BROWNIE BITES one, they expired on the 16th! Oh my goodness, I couldn't stop t... Fri, 12 Mar 2010 22:06:19 EST My 37th Birthday with plenty of frustrations and one surprise Well my 37th birthday was yesterday and I was pretty excited. I had plans to walk for an hour at the mall with some friends after taking the kids to school, then go to the Starbucks and get a treat with my very old $5 gift card to receive a free beverage for turning another year older (you get this reward for registering your card online). After that I had purchased a yummy mixed nut strudel/danish to bring to the cafeteria ladies for when I work my daughter's lunch duty. So, I had the who... Fri, 22 Jan 2010 15:46:03 EST The Learning Curve.... 1. I have learned not to worry so much about everything. I have always been a "worry wart" as my Mother would say. I am the stressy one. That can affect you in so many ways. This month I worried about my daughter's Winter party and ended up with a migraine afterwards. Several times this year I have worried at night and couldn't sleep. I'm sure this decade is full of unnecessary worry about exactly how many calories are in that dessert vs. this dessert .... duh Mel,,,,just skip the dess... Tue, 22 Dec 2009 12:55:50 EST The Consistancy Dare.... Well let's see what am I most consistant with.......I guess gathering my food info. All along the way I have been very diligent in that matter. I wanted to be very accurate in what I was putting in my mouth and thus also entering in my log so I would know what else I would need to or could eat.

I have struggled a lot with eating enough protein and now fiber so I really still have to monitor, even after reaching my goal. However, I would have to say my main struggle is time. I... Thu, 17 Dec 2009 22:12:12 EST Breakfast Casserole and Summer sausage Memories... My family gets together over food like most usually do, I'm sure. My favorite holiday memories are during the Christmas season. I would always make a breakfast casserole where I would grill up some bacon, set it aside and then saute onions and bell peppers in my Mom's electric skillet. She had all sorts of weird quirks....I once cooked an entire Thanksgiving dinner in the microwave! Anway, then I throw in the bag of hash browns and cook until golden brown. Mix enough eggs for everyone in... Fri, 11 Dec 2009 17:22:52 EST What December's Dare means to me... Well, our St. Louis Sparkers dared our team members to give ourselves a challenge and stick with it during the most tempting of holidays. I've been very hungry lately and even though I do exercise on average 2x a week, I am very tempted by snacks (not usual for me). I've worked hard to get to my goal weight and don't want to get set back.

So........with that said, I have taken the challenge and vowed to do 60 sit-ups of different varieties at least 3x a week, 20 manly push-ups wh... Tue, 1 Dec 2009 22:02:08 EST My Ups and Downs of The Swimsuit Challenge Well, we are into our third week of the challenge and I have found that there are both pluses and minuses to this particular challenge.

DOWNS: I am on my second one right now. Last week I broke the rear windshield of my van and needed to get it fixed. Along with that stress came two migraines. Then we went away for the weekend for a wedding. This week was my son's 4th birthday and I finished putting in the veggie garden which I forced myself to finish last night (didn't eat a... Thu, 21 May 2009 08:49:35 EST First day of Swimsuit Bootcamp. Yeah!! Another bootcamp has finally arrived! I guess I am the type of person who needs constant motivation. I loved that last bootcamp where we got daily exercise challenges plus bonuses. It really helped tone things up in the areas that needed belly and thighs. I measured about 45 minutes ago and was either the same or down from the last time I measured, so I am very pleased. My belly even had gone down. I hope this Swimsuit challenge whips me into shape even more. Since last Januar... Sun, 3 May 2009 13:14:59 EST The end of Bootcamp :( and : ) The New YOU Bootcamp is officially over, but I will still go back and do the videos daily until another similar program/contest appears. I think the program was a huge success. I don't know how much I have lost, maybe a couple pounds, but I know I have lost a few inches from the 9th to the 30th and hav... Sun, 1 Feb 2009 17:55:35 EST My 36th Birthday! Well, today is my 36th birthday and I'm bummed I didn't have a chance to exercise. The kids had playgroup, then we cleaned up, played some more, had to go get milk and fixings for a cake because the kids insisted it just wouldn't be a birthday w/out a cake and then got some Qdoba to bring home. After all that, I somehow managed to neglect my protein count by 14 and only had 140 calories and 10 fat to spare. I was racking my brain for a bit to figure out what I could eat or drink (milk) to ... Wed, 21 Jan 2009 22:26:16 EST First big challenge! I have just signed up for the Bootcamp challenge and hope to use it as an exercise booster. I have grown to love exercise and sometimes after my routines have the desire to do more. Sounds kind of sick, huh?! I find it hard to believe myself considering I am sick right now and had a coughing fit earlier today that caused me to have to take a migraine pill so I wouldn't get a migraine. Anyway....I am excited about the routine for tomorrow's challenge and whatever else I will do exercise wi... Sun, 4 Jan 2009 21:07:00 EST
