ROTTMOM71's SparkPeople Blog ROTTMOM71's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community The only constant is change... So busy lately, sometimes I think I am running on auto-pilot. We are moving from McHenry in late April/early May, back to Downers Grove. We enjoyed a change of pace for the past 2.5 years, living in the NW suburbs, but we both feel it's time to move on (and back to civilization, so to speak).

Having panic attacks thinking how much needs to be done, and I will be traveling for work all next week! Yikes. Fortunately for us, we are moving back to our home that we had rented out to a ... Wed, 10 Apr 2013 09:07:30 EST The Future, One Day at a Time I can’t believe February is almost done. January was spent recovering from surgery. A few weeks in, I had a minor infection that required some antibiotics. I healed well, though, and was cleared at 6 weeks to begin exercising (although I cheated a bit and exercised lightly a few days earlier than that…shhh!).

Change sure has been a constant in my life recently (is that an oxymoron, or what?). I returned to work after 5 weeks and learned that my job function would be changing—again.... Mon, 25 Feb 2013 10:09:33 EST Post-Surgery Update 282 It's been a week since my hysterectomy, and recovery is going slowly. I don't know why I imagined that it would be any other way; there is bound to be a fair amount of "down" time. The good thing is, they were able to leave my ovaries so I don't have to be on hormones. Also, the pathology report was clear, aside from some cancer, woohoo! That's huge!

There are 4 incisions on my tummy, two on the right side, one on the left, and one about an inch above ... Fri, 21 Dec 2012 16:19:44 EST I hate math, but I love subtracting! Yay, I lost an inch from my waist! 9 I've been eating well, and all this personal training has definitely helped me keep from falling into a rut where I do the same things over and over. The two things together are helping re-shape my body. 344

I feel good! (cue the James Brown music) Tonight I'm having leftover stir-fry chicken and veggies with a salad for dinner. Snack will be either some light micro popcorn or a WW snack bar. It's good to plan ahead, e... Tue, 27 Nov 2012 16:31:45 EST Celebrations and Surgery Over the weekend I turned 41. Funny how I don’t feel that old most of the time. They say that growing old is a requirement, but growing up is optional so I try to live by that motto. To celebrate, DH and I went out for dinner on Saturday, then did the McHenry Christmas walk. It was low-key but we had fun. I ate off-plan, but really not so bad, considering. It is one day of the year and I felt I deserved a break.

In other news, I have finally found a gynecologist who listens, and se... Mon, 19 Nov 2012 09:43:47 EST I think my trainer’s trying to kill me (and other exaggerations) Day 4 of PT and I’m definitely getting my butt kicked. Here is a sample of what I did today (and I’m feeling every bit of it!):

85 34 320

-Warm up/stretch
-Overhead squats w/bar
-Bosu balancing 2 min
-Alternating lunges on Bosu 10 reps
-Bosu balance/toss small and large ball w/partner 1.5 min
-Lunges with double shoulder press 20 reps
-Bosu pushups one hand on Bosu 5 each arm
-Knee lifts on chair 15... Thu, 8 Nov 2012 09:31:15 EST Slump...followed by renewed determination Well I have certainly been away for some time. Too long, and I knew it, but just couldn't bring myself to come here every day and see what I wasn't accomplishing. There's also been a lot of work and personal drama going on, which made it really hard to focus on taking care of myself. But those are still excuses, and I'm fed up with them.

Fortunately, I haven't slide into complete slug-hood over the past few months. I have still been working out a few times a week, although I knew I... Tue, 30 Oct 2012 10:03:00 EST Wow. Late last summer, we found out another company was going to buy the division of the company I worked for at the time. The deal finally closed on May 1, so I and 2 coworkers flew to CA for some training with our peers who are based out of an office there. I've worked with most of these ppl for 7+ years. We were excited about the new company taking us over; it had been a lot of hard work getting to that point but we felt optimistic and positive about the possibilities and the direction the new ... Thu, 10 May 2012 09:47:16 EST Would you like some cheese with that whine? I’ve been stuck for a while at the same weight (with a fluctuation of a pound or two). This, despite the fact that I’ve been working out pretty hard (and often) lately. I even earned my first trophy on my Polar FT60 HRM. That basically means I met all my goals for fitness and HR levels last week. Yay! But the scale didn’t budge because I ate too much and had some drinks when DH and I took a mini-staycation in Chicago. (We had a blast, but I knew I was going off-plan so I shouldn’t have been s... Tue, 17 Apr 2012 21:18:38 EST Plateau City, Baby!! Yup, I’m now in a major plateau. I have stayed steady for a couple of months now, weight-wise. Something has to be done to break this…but I’m not sure what. Lately my problem has been twofold: motivation on my at-home days to do “real” exercise (other than a walk around the neighborhood) and eating too darn much.

It seems that I am always hungry. I drink water, keep my fiber intake high and try to eat filling foods. But the past few weeks I’ve craved junky stuff: ice cream, (wh... Wed, 4 Apr 2012 13:18:50 EST WW Deep Dish Pizza Casserole Review

deep-dish-pizza-casserole-224261

This was tonight's dinner. I am one of those people who almost always tinker with a recipe and this was no exception. I subbed ground turkey for the beef as I always do, then added some chopped onion, diced bell pepper, and mushrooms to the turkey after it cooked. Any excuse to get more veggies!! 258 Then I added the tomatoes and it just didn't seem "saucy" at all. I had about 1/2 c... Sat, 31 Mar 2012 20:47:42 EST Creamy Swiss Chard Pasta review Made this last night.

rd-pasta-57123

I only altered the recipe to add extra tomatoes and some seasonings. It would have been pretty bland without adding some cayenne, parsley, salt and pepper to taste. I have never cooked Swiss chard before, so I think it was a bit 'al dente' and I should have cooked it down a bit more. It has an almost meaty texture to it, which I think helped fill me up along with the pasta (I used lingui... Wed, 28 Mar 2012 11:35:45 EST Meal Plan & Recipes to Try So after trying the meal planning thing for a few days, I figure I'll try to do it for a full week. I have some tried & true recipes picked out that I want to use and a few new ones to try as well. Not sure yet what days I'll be making what, but here are the items:

Creamy Swiss Chard Pasta

rd-pasta-57123

15 Minute Garlic Lemon Chicken

-lemon-chicken-20624 ... Sat, 24 Mar 2012 20:44:30 EST Miserable pain This blog may be TMI but I’m posting it anyway, because I’m curious if anyone else has had the type of menstrual problems I’ve had most of my life.

I started getting my period I was 14. The pain was so intense when I was in high school I would frequently experience fainting spells. At that time, I was living in a very small town and the doctors (mostly male) thought I was being overly dramatic. This made my mother so angry she found me a female doctor, who prescribed birth control ... Thu, 15 Mar 2012 09:47:15 EST A meal plan (sorta...) I'm inspired by others who have been so good at planning their meals in advance. I thought I'd give it a test run to see how I do. I went grocery shopping last night to pick up essentials for the following dishes:

-Ground turkey tacos (had this last nite)

-Grilled bruschetta chicken (tonight)

ta-chicken-230911

-Smoked turkey sausage with pasta (Saturday)

us... Fri, 9 Mar 2012 12:45:04 EST Polar FT60 For a while I’ve used an Omron heart rate monitor, the watch/chest strap combo. It works fine, but it didn’t give me the kind of info I’ve been needing, i.e., am I on target with my workout, do I need to increase or decrease intensity, etc. Honestly, I’m kind of a fitness dummy. I do best when someone tells me what I should be aiming for as far as HR, workout intensity and all that jazz. Looking at my HR never really registered for me because I wasn’t entirely sure what intensity zone I shoul... Tue, 6 Mar 2012 16:09:19 EST Poor choices and lessons learned So I am up 2 lbs. this week but am not that surprised. Over the weekend we had a surprise “Sweet 16” party for my mom. 409 (Before you do the math, let me point out that she was born on Leap Year so she is 16 or 64, depending how you look at it.) I’d planned the party for a couple of months with my sister’s help. It went great for the most part, except on the 4-hr. drive to the party location, hub and I foolishly stopped at McD’s for a sandwich. That may not seem like the end of t... Tue, 28 Feb 2012 09:59:01 EST Good to be back, without a gain! Just returned from 11 days in Costa Rica yesterday. It was a fantastic trip and I’m hoping to post some pix when I get more settled. But I’m proud to say that I didn’t gain anything (other than a few bug bites) on my trip. I didn’t lose weight either but I consider this a win because I was in a foreign country eating different foods at different times of day sometimes. I allowed myself a few drinks (rum/diet coke) but other than that I was pretty on track. We were fairly active as well, hikin... Tue, 14 Feb 2012 15:45:14 EST Measuring Success I haven't measured myself for a while, but I knew my clothes were super loose, especially most of my pants. Finally measured today and here are the results:

Waist: lost 2.5 inches 7

R Thigh: lost 1 inch 7

L Thigh: lost .75 inch 7

R upper arm: lost .25 inch 7

L upper arm: lost .5 inch 7

Hips: lost 3 inches!! 7

This goes to show you that no matter ... Wed, 11 Jan 2012 21:23:29 EST Early Christmas Gift to Myself After all the turmoil and sadness surrounding my grandma's passing, I am feeling a little more at peace with things. I miss her--will always miss her--but we are all thankful she is back with Grandpa. The thought warms my heart so much.

The past 2.5 weeks have been hit or miss with my exercise regimen. I traveled south for the funeral then was quite ill early last week so I missed a few days of workouts. I did manage to get my butt up early and make it to the gym today. When ... Tue, 20 Dec 2011 10:51:27 EST Goodbye, Grandma My mom called me at work this afternoon to let me know that Grandma had passed away shortly before. Nothing ever prepares someone for losing a close loved one, even when it's an inevitability. I cried like a baby all the way home.

My grandparents meant the world to me. A family rift with between Dad and his mother meant that I was never close to her, and Dad's dad died before I was born. My mom's parents went out of their way to make up for us kids not having two sets of grandparen... Thu, 1 Dec 2011 22:02:47 EST Losses Thanksgiving was hard this year. My grandma (my mom’s mom) was in the hospital for a week before the holiday, and the doctors couldn’t really pinpoint what was wrong. Her hemoglobin and potassium levels were low but they couldn’t find a reason. She was lethargic and quite disoriented, sleeping most of the time. The CT scans showed no bleeding in the brain, yet she could not sit upright without difficulty. The consensus seems to be that, at age 88, she is simply old and her body is beginning t... Tue, 29 Nov 2011 09:48:16 EST 40? Who, me?!? Today is my 40th birthday. After making my grand entrance into this world at 1:44 a.m. 40 years ago (my mom said it wouldn't be like me to come at a civilized hour hehehe), who would have guessed that I'd be writing about my age in this blog. I’ve never felt my age, but I really don’t feel 40! I could obsess over it, feel down and sorry for myself, but why?? I have so many things to be happy about in my life. I thought today would be a good day to list some of them:

1) A loving,... Thu, 17 Nov 2011 09:45:57 EST Shortchanging myself I was putzing around with my weight loss ticker when I realized that I weighed 197 lbs. when I started on SP in 2010. I lost about 15 then gained back 4. I maintained at 186 for quite a while, even when I wasn’t doing much in the way of exercise. When I truly got back into working at this once again, I was at 186. So my ticker reflected only what I’d lost between early Sept. of this year and now, which was 11 lbs. In total, however, I’ve lost 22! Woohoooo! I updated my ticker and it is reall... Tue, 8 Nov 2011 11:42:00 EST I think I'm gonna a good way! Progress Update 11/3/11:

-Weight lost: 11 lbs. since early September 2011 192

-Inches lost: ½” from waist, hips; .75” from upper arms. 7

-Stamina: I can do 30 minutes on level 5 of the stair machine, which never would have happened just a few months ago! Also, I don't stop my workout in the middle, because I feel a little winded or fatigued. I embrace the tiredness, and the sweat! 198

-Energy: On days that I wor... Thu, 3 Nov 2011 12:14:21 EST Without struggle, there is no progress Things are going well here—I’m finally making a little progress in the weight loss area, after stalling out for months. I’ve continuously worked out over the past months, but it’s just now paying off. I’m feeling pretty good these days. My stamina is increasing, and I know that although I’ll never be a fitness model, I am getting stronger and healthier. Dropping a few lbs. this past month has made a big difference mentally and physically. I feel more positive and not so defeated. I worked o... Thu, 6 Oct 2011 09:58:25 EST Where did June go?!? Wow this year is flying by. It was a lazy June for me, but not entirely by choice. I became very sick with extreme lower intestinal pain one evening. It was excruciating, to the point where I nearly passed out a couple times. When I went to the bathroom, there was a LOT of blood passing. This freaked me out, though I thought maybe it was a one time thing, but it occurred several more times during the night. As uncomfortable as I was, I decided to wait until morning to see what was going on.... Fri, 1 Jul 2011 10:30:37 EST Strange Times It’s been a weird couple of months. It almost feels as if I’ve been sleepwalking for a while.

In late April, we learned at work that our company would be making major changes to its U.S. business. By early May, we knew that our division in particular was being put up for sale. It’s a scary proposition to face, not knowing if, when, or how the business will be sold, and whether or not I’ll still be standing when it does. This process could take a long time, so while I have put my r... Thu, 9 Jun 2011 09:37:18 EST What I see vs. what is reality I am one of those people who used to be quite thin; in fact, I was probably too thin at certain points in my life (in high school I was barely a size 4, at 5’6” tall), but it was simply a by-product of my lifestyle at that particular time. I was active and single, and I did not have $$ for meals out. Plus, food just wasn’t a focus in my life.

Into my early 30s I was a more healthy weight, and wore a size 6. Life began to get more hectic; I was working full time for a terrible boss... Tue, 29 Mar 2011 11:55:10 EST Family Resemblance I was going thru some old photos and came across one of my favorites of my grandma, back when she was a very young woman. She is holding my aunt Rosalie on her lap. Knowing that my aunt is older than my mom, I'm guessing the date of the photo at around 1942. Then I found a photo of me holding my nephew Devan on my lap, in 1992. I hadn't noticed it before, but putting the two pix side by side, I do see a resemblance between me and my grandma. Kinda neat!

<img src="http://photos-... Mon, 21 Mar 2011 21:45:18 EST Paradise Found We flew Chicago to Houston, connected on a flight to Liberia, Costa Rica. Landed in Liberia Sunday night and stayed at the Airport HIlton, which was very comfortable.

Monday we headed to Tenorio Volcano to our next hotel, and boy am I glad I insisted on a 4wheel drive vehicle! This place is so remote the roads are bumpy, muddy, rocky paths. There is the occasional farm or ranch on this road, but it would be easy to get lost here. When we got to the river next to the hotel, Rio Ce... Wed, 9 Mar 2011 11:48:10 EST Costa Rica Well, we did it. My hubby and I are going to Costa Rica NEXT WEEK! Oh man, I have so much to do...but honestly I'm not too worried. It'll get done. We have been talking about this trip for a long time. We leave on March 6 and return March 16.

Our biggest concern was what to do with Griffin for 10 days. We did not feel right burdening our families because he is still a pup and lots of work! So, we found a local kennel that also offers a training program while the dog is being bo... Fri, 25 Feb 2011 09:46:34 EST New shoes! I have always had foot, ankle and lower leg problems, ever since I ran track in high school. That has been part of the reason I've shied away from heavy duty walking or jogging. I finally decided that if I'm going to get fit, I need shoes that are going to help alleviate my pain so I can begin to enjoy walking (and eventually, hopefully, jogging).

Today I went to a store that specializes in running shoes. I had my feet analyzed on their machine, and had my gait analyzed. As I kn... Sat, 19 Feb 2011 16:45:36 EST Veggie tips and kale chips Hope everyone had a nice Valentine’s Day! Usually, it’s not a huge event for me and Michael. This year, however, we decided we’d go out for Mexican food. I know, not the lowest calorie choice, but I did eat smart earlier in the day, anticipating the extra dinner calories.

I am working to increase my veggie intake, partly because it’s good for me and partly because they help fill me up. 210 I often sneak extra tomatoes and spinach into dishes. I also use a lot of mushr... Tue, 15 Feb 2011 11:14:22 EST Beginning (again) This marks day 2 of getting back to working out. Realizing that I’ve lost so much ground fitness-wise is a little discouraging, but I know that I can get back to the point I was at, and possibly even better. My weight only increased by a few lbs. over the past several months but I’ve already lost 3.2 lbs. this week so that proves that exercising and eating right WORKS. 30

I took a huge step today and signed up for the Biggest Loser competition at the fitness ctr. at w... Thu, 10 Feb 2011 09:09:03 EST Update on me Haven’t been here in so long. So much has been going on. We got an offer on our house in September and spent a month haggling with the buyers. Finally sold our house and closed on it in late October. We lived for 10 days in a hotel (with the puppy! 40 ) until the new house was ready. Now we are settled and enjoying the peace and quiet in our new area. We moved to the far northwest suburbs, which is a bit more rural. The house is beautiful and we have a nice big wooded lot for pr... Tue, 14 Dec 2010 11:02:51 EST Good things A short list of good things in my life right now:

1) being selected as Walker of the Day yesterday by the Walking/Leslie Sansone team WOOHOO! 311

2) FINALLY broke my plateau after a few months. I'm down another pound (after gaining and losing several times) to my lowest point since I gained all this weight several yrs ago. I'm feeling so good about it, and motivated too!!

3) I'm doing better with eating well. Fixing my lunch to take to the office on... Tue, 17 Aug 2010 09:48:59 EST Puppies are good for your health! We picked up our puppy on Friday afternoon. We played with him and his 6 sisters for about an hour before we drove back home with him. He didn't sleep once on the way home (1.5 hrs)! He laid in my arms the whole way, being a good baby. Ohhh, and that sweet puppy smell--there is nothing like it!

The first night at home was tough on him and us, but he is getting better each night. He is so much fun! He is always moving around and getting into things so it keeps us on our toes. Thi... Tue, 10 Aug 2010 16:27:02 EST Rewarding myself Ok, so I haven't reached any major milestones lately in terms of my fitness/weight loss, but I still believe that I deserve a reward now & then. I decided to treat myself to a massage after work today. I got a deep tissue massage, cuz I have a ton of tension in my shoulders and neck. It was AMAZING. I feel so much better in a number of ways right now. I wish I could afford to do this more often. It is such great therapy for my poor body!

Fri, 23 Jul 2010 19:52:32 EST Vision Collage and 28 day challenge Well I've been talking about it long enough--and I finally DID it. I made a vision collage! The pic was taken with my camera phone which is why it's so blurry. I'll take a better photo after DH gets back with my digi camera. Anyway, it focuses on fitness, eating well and overall well-being. These are areas of my life which I very much want to improve. I'm happy with the result of this little project and hope it will inspire me.

<img src=" Wed, 21 Jul 2010 17:46:06 EST I'm having a baby--er, puppy! I finally have something really uplifting and exciting to share. We are going to be dog parents again! I'm absolutely over the moon with excitement. DH was the reason we waited so long since our other Rotts passed away last year. I was ready a few months ago for a new one, but he didn't feel right at the time. Well, we have been having puppy talk and we decided to go see a litter of 4 wk old Rott pups the other night.

Exa, the mom, is just the most beautiful and sweet girl. She ... Thu, 15 Jul 2010 08:54:09 EST What it means The dictionary gives the definition of the word "commit" as: to promise devotion.

I've talked about committing to my weight loss and health journey, but have done little to execute the plan in the past couple of months. I've let my personal problems sabotage my goals and that isn't right.

Beginning today, I am re-committing to myself, my health, my life.
-I will write my goals out and create a motivation collage.
-I will remember that what I put in my mout... Tue, 13 Jul 2010 08:30:03 EST Drama and trauma I can’t believe how long it’s been since I’ve posted on SP. I’ve felt guilty about it, but I have had such a bad time personally lately that I am having trouble focusing on other things.

A couple weeks ago, DH and I had a huge blowout over a lot of stuff that’s been building up. There was a lot of ugly stuff said (mostly by him) and I was (and am still) very hurt by it. We really didn’t speak for a week, and I began looking for a place to stay until my head cleared. I never d... Wed, 23 Jun 2010 12:35:54 EST The proof is in the tape measure! Last night I measured myself for the first time since the beginning of April. I've lost 2" off my waist, 1.25 off my thighs, and 2" off my upper arms! 104 That really motivates me. After not seeing the scale move the past few weeks, this is the positive reinforcement I needed. It's clear that my body is changing, the weight redistributing and my muscles toning up. What a great feeling!

Thu, 27 May 2010 08:55:55 EST Validation So I got a little more validation that my program is paying off earlier today. I tried on a pair of shorts from last yr. that I was unable to wear because they were too snug all last summer. Today they not only fit, they were a bit BIG on me! YAY!! 9 That is such a great feeling. It doesn't matter so much what the scale says, I know I am making progress in other ways.

I spent the late morning/early afternoon trimming the bushes around our yard. Let me tell you, that... Sat, 22 May 2010 20:17:12 EST Baby anything is cute! DH and I just returned from a walk around the walking path and pond in our neighborhood. We always see geese and their goslings, very cute. But today we saw ducks with their tiny little ducklings! This one mama had 9 babies...amazing! 160 My mom always said baby anything is cute, which I think is true.

Feeling good and the sun is shining SO brightly today. After all the gloomy, chilly weather lately, we deserve a warm sunny day! This is one of those days where you... Wed, 19 May 2010 13:42:45 EST Helloooooo Endorphins!!! Ever have one of those days where you got up feeling “ok” but felt like a million bucks after working out? Well I usually don’t, but today I really am feeling great! I worked out hard, pushing myself a bit. My stamina has increased and I did about 25 mins on the stair machine without feeling like I was going to pass out. That is a milestone for me. Perhaps I need to continue to push myself (at a reasonable rate, of course) so I feel this way after every workout! What a novel idea.
... Tue, 18 May 2010 09:09:56 EST Trying to hold it together I have not been around SP as much as I’d like lately. Work has been keeping me very busy.

I have several big projects, all due to deliver at basically the same time, all on impossible timelines. I honestly don’t know where my counterparts come up with their scheduling. They always give other groups enough time to complete their part of the project, but when it comes to my end of things, I’m expected to actually shave days or even WEEKS off of my part of the schedule, and then ... Mon, 17 May 2010 14:23:09 EST Cranky I’m not feeling great today. I have another nasty headache that I had all night last night as well. The weather seems to affect my headaches a lot. Last night and today have been rainy and the barometric pressure seems to play havoc with my sinuses and head. I basically laid in bed awake all night with an ice pack on my head. Very little sleep, so I’m mega cranky today too. Not a good combination.

I didn’t make it to work out this morning, just wasn’t feeling well enough. So...
