RESCUEFROG's SparkPeople Blog RESCUEFROG's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community I am Captain Sporadic! The desk-potatoing of my first semester of graduate school continued into the second semester - I now find myself a total of 15 pounds heavier than when I started, and I promise, it's not muscle - it's donuts, beer, snacks, soda (which I know not to drink) and good 'ole down-south home cooking.

This summer is offering some relief in the form of weekend-warrioring. Bike rides of a few miles on Saturdays while pulling the amazingly heavy trailer my daughter rides in (60 lbs!) and wa... Mon, 24 Jun 2013 12:35:39 EST 2013! Well, I've been off of here a while. New things, in order:

Birth of beautiful baby girl!
Quit Job
Moved to Michigan
Started graduate school (Master's of Divinity)
Became a desk-potatoe
Started riding bike to school in January.

Those last two are why I'm back on SparkPeople. I don't want to become the atrophied overweight graduate student I see so much of everywhere. Since starting school I've added a few pounds and my pants are a testament to... Fri, 4 Jan 2013 21:41:36 EST Walking Competition Whew! It's been a while!

Well, I'm back on board. We'll see how long this time. But I figured I'd take advantage of the awesome fitness tracker on here to help me keep track of my fitness over the next couple of months.

See, my company is pretty awesome, so they have put together a walking competition. We divided up into teams (I'm a team captain) and have to see which team gets the most steps in (as proportionate to team size) during 2 months. Cool!

So I... Mon, 30 Aug 2010 09:22:54 EST VFF's and Concrete Don't Mix Well, I was a good boy and changed into running clothes and headed out onto the Boise Greenbelt as soon as I got to the hotel. Super-long day of driving and working on a few towers, but pretty easy.

The run = c. six miles in 55 minutes. And I even threw in five minutes of stairs at the half-way point. The stairs were not the best idea, my normal habit of overdoing it...

I gotta say though, I love my Vibram Five Fingers. Most awesome running show of all time; unless y... Tue, 16 Mar 2010 23:13:57 EST OK first day back... Well, I didn't wake up in time to run, but I did get in some good exercise today. I'll have to run tomorrow to make up for it though.

I got to hike through snow, at times hip-deep, to the summit of West Mountain and back down again, which took about 3 hours. That wouldn't be so bad, but it's a steep grade and I had my 40 pounds of safety equipment, water, light-bulbs, etc. hanging from me. At the top, I got to climb a short tower before heading down.

I drove straight ... Mon, 15 Mar 2010 23:24:23 EST Off the wagon...and blueberry muffins Ok, so I fell of the wagon in the last couple of weeks. I got a fair bit of exercise at work, but haven't been running or biking.

This morning started off nice and lazy, plus I made some killer blueberry muffins. You can search them in the recipe finder, as "Jonathan's Kinda-low-fat blueberry muffins."

I'd be out riding today, but its raining pretty steadily. That said, I'm going to try to kick things off the right way on Monday. Run in the morning. SAR training in ... Sat, 13 Mar 2010 14:01:03 EST Hmmm, some training changes are needed Well, I've taken a good hard look at the bike races that I want to do this year, and:

a) each marathon, relay or half marathon that I was looking at is in conflict with a bike ride I want to do. And honestly, I like riding my bike a whole lot more.

b) if I'm going to take these races as seriously as they are, I have to change my training.

So, I need to put together a non-running oriented training program. I need to get in a lot of bike miles. From stuff tha... Tue, 2 Mar 2010 22:38:26 EST 109 mile bike ride & March Goals Just got back from the Early Spring Zion Century. The challenge didn't disappoint me! For the first big ride of the year (longest yet being around 24), 109 miles of stiff hills was tough. Acc'd to my fancy cyclometer, I pulled near 5000' of climbing over the 8hrs 15min that the ride took me. My supreme goal was 5 hours, but my "realistic" goal was 6:30; apparently I have some work to do. Oh, and there was being rained upon, a flat tire, and being passed by lots of super-fast team riders.... Sun, 28 Feb 2010 23:39:30 EST Running Mileage Build-Up Schedule Whew, the upper body is worked tonight! Push-ups, pull-ups, and hanging leg raises. I'm about done... But glad that I fought through night #2 of returning to my strength routine.

Well, I promised a couple of nights ago to post my mileage build-up schedule for running. Here it is.

I'm in Week 4 right now and everything is going well. I've made the mistake in the past of doing too much too fast and getting hurt, so I'm taking it slow and easy this time like this pro... Fri, 19 Feb 2010 01:00:57 EST Run before work, bicycle afterwards Good day! Had an awesome performance review by my boss! I rewarded myself by taking a long afternoon ride. Ok, not too long, but I did ride for about an hour.

This morning, I got my butt out of bed and over to Liberty Park for a nice run around the loop a couple of times. I like running there, and 3 miles is great, but 6 or more would be really boring. Thu, 18 Feb 2010 01:18:02 EST Here's the basic plan Alright, so I'm going to reveal my secrets...

My closest goal, I think, is to rock the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office's (henceforth SLCSO) physical fitness test for Search and Rescue. It's kinda intense; I tried it out and passed, but it kicked my butt. So here's the plan to crush the physical fitness test:

I'm going to keep running acc'd to my marathon training schedule. This has me running 4 to 5 times a week as I slowly build up mileage (to give you an idea, I'l... Wed, 17 Feb 2010 00:33:46 EST Whew! Quite the President's Day! I'm a bit worn out after burning about 1800 calories today... But I'm glad I made a plan for the day and stuck with it, despite many opportunities to not do so.

All weekend I slacked from my running schedule, missing two days - so I was determined that today, Monday, I would wake up early and go run, even though it was a holiday. Surprisingly, I awoke right on time and ready to run! I reached my mileage goal with a nice run outside, and I felt great the whole time.

Wh... Tue, 16 Feb 2010 01:38:34 EST First Ride of the Year with Jenny This afternoon was fun as we picked out new pedals for Jenny and I put them on her bike along with a new saddle-pack for myself. Afterwards, we loaded up the bikes and headed out for a very cold 9 mile ride during dusk. Jenny was reminded of the commercial we saw earlier today when someone says "we got 20 minutes, then we'll go around the block!"

Well, we did more than just around the block and came home to a healthy dinner - and the Olympics. I'm glad that Canada won in freest... Sun, 14 Feb 2010 23:07:19 EST Epic Day of Work (= a lot of exercise) Well, I was a good boy and woke up early and went to run my 4 miles today. Jenny and I went down to the local fitness center and bought memberships so I can run when its cold/the air is unbreathable by healthy humans.

After I arrived at my tower site today, I began thinking that I shouldn't have run... I got the truck at least to the base of the mountain that my tower was on (I needed to do a communication system inspection), which was only about 1/2 mile from the main road. I... Mon, 8 Feb 2010 20:12:27 EST Great day of exercise! I am proud of myself for doing something I haven't done in a really long time. I ran 4 miles before church, and then this afternoon I hopped on the bike and rode 30 miles. That sure made enjoying the superbowl food easier!

It was really nice out today, a bit nippy (long tights, long sleeves, and a headband) but dry, sunny, and not too windy. Sun, 7 Feb 2010 23:02:13 EST I have Defeated Coca-Cola! Ah, its been a hard-fought war, but today I finally triumphed over my addiction to that sweet goodness of original Coca-Cola.

This all started years ago when I realized that Coke wasn't really anything other than:

Carbonic Acid
Carmel Coloring
High-fructose corn syrup

Um, I wouldn't cook with any of that, and I use carbonic acid to clean off my car battery terminals, so what am I doing drinking this stuff? In this case, knowledge was not power, thou... Sat, 6 Feb 2010 22:05:35 EST Captain of Team P3 Whoo-hoo!

I am Captain of Team P3! What is P3? The "Persistently Praying Peddlers." It's a group of Christians in Salt Lake City who are going to be riding in the MS-150 this year at Harmon's Best Dam Bike Ride.

What a great opportunity to motivate myself to get into better shape, but a lot of us can be working towards the same goal. It take a lot of effort to ride 25, 30, 50, or even 100 miles!

Awesome opportunity this is, and how great it will be to ri... Thu, 4 Feb 2010 23:12:48 EST First Ride of the Year - Zion Country Spring Century So, down in Zion is the first road century of the year. Dare I try it? 27th and 28th this month.

I've not ridden that far in a LONG time! I wonder how long it will take me? I'm not in as good a shape as I was last time I tried an off-the-couch century a few years ago.

arlySpringCenturyFeb282009/tabid/109/D
efault.aspx

That's the website if any of you are interested. They have 25, 50, 60, and 1... Wed, 3 Feb 2010 18:47:39 EST Running Goals I have two running goals and a host of cycling projects coming up.

I want to run the Utah Valley Half-Marathon on June 12th, and if that doesn't kill me, I have Logan's Top of Utah Marathon in my sights for mid September.

As far as cycling goes, that's kinda the easy part for me. I love to ride and its something that I'm way better at than running - so all I have to do is get out and ride. That said, I don't have too small of goals in this field:

MS 150, th... Tue, 2 Feb 2010 23:06:59 EST Back in the Saddle...Kinda I have run twice this week, which is totally a new record for me this year. Ok, to tell the truth, its the two times that I've run this year at all.

I like running, honestly, as it just helps to put me in a better mood. Days that I get to run on are days that I just feel better. So, why is it that I just can't get myself out of bed and go out running? I have a serious motivation crux here. I want to run, I have fun while running, but I can't seem to put my shoes on. What g... Fri, 29 Jan 2010 14:14:31 EST I'm new at this... Ok, so I've joined Spark People.

I will try to keep this updated, but basically I'm trying to find a way to keep up some level of fitness in my life. I'm on the road a lot and tend to work kinda long hours - two things that make me not want to exercise or eat right. I feel like I'm turning into a giant tree sloth, and I'm afraid of what will happen if this trend continues through this decade into my 40s.

My weaknesses: trying to become a human wikipedia; not running;...
