RENLA6991's SparkPeople Blog RENLA6991's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community I'm Down to Two Dads Consider this blogging therapy. I need to get this out of my head because it’s been banging around & driving me crazy since Monday.

That’s the day that I found out my biological father had died.

I grew up in a typical, slightly dysfunctional (right, Lydia?) family with my mom, dad (Dennis) and sister. I never thought much of it when people said that I looked like my mom & my sister took after my dad. In high school, we did a blood type testing lab. My parents both ha... Thu, 21 Jul 2011 12:13:40 EST Postponing a Dream Tuesday, July 5th was to be the day that I registered for the 2012 Disney Princess HM. Ever since the day I found out about this race it has been my dream to run it. I’m a huge Disney fan, and the idea of running through WDW (especially Cinderella’s castle) while being entertained by characters and thousands of other Disney fans really excited me. I had made plans to run it with a few close SparkFriends of mine next year, all decked out in our pretty pink finery. 2012 was going to be the ... Sun, 3 Jul 2011 11:52:30 EST Flying Pig: My First Half-Marathon Race Report! Sorry…it’s a long one! Last weekend, I was blessed to run my first half marathon with my sister, Lydia (BRIDGE1028) & one of best SparkBuddies, Mel (MGJARVI). It was their first half marathon too! Running a half marathon had been a dream of mine since late 2009. I had always heard such great things about the Flying Pig, so I knew that my first one would have to be my hometown race.

We started the weekend by meeting in the lobby of our hotel, The Millennium. Even though Mel & I... Fri, 6 May 2011 11:16:35 EST Please Help Me Pad My Playlist I am so bored with my running playlist. This is not good, considering I'm running 14 miles this Sunday and getting ready for the Flying Pig half marathon on May 1st.

So, I thought I'd reach out to my friends. Can you suggest some songs to add to my playlist? I don't care about the genre - I enjoy almost every type of music. The songs can be fun, inspirational or just have a great beat. What's really going to motivate me is thinking of the person who chose the song for me as it... Fri, 15 Apr 2011 15:47:45 EST JASR: My (Almost) Non-Race Report This weekend I traveled to Pittsburgh to meet a bunch of Sparkers…oh, and to run 8.1 miles in Just a Short Run! I apologize that there’s no pictures; I brought my camera but forgot to use it!

The race itself was difficult for me. I was feeling the effects of being sick earlier that week & almost no sleep the night before. The temperature fluctuated around the lake, ranging from bitter, I-think-my-fingers-are-frostbitten cold to chilly but sunny, and I wasn’t able to regulate my ... Mon, 28 Mar 2011 10:10:35 EST I am a Spinning GODDESS! (Karen, in the spirit of celebrating what we're doing right, this one's for you!)

I just finished my best spinning class. It could've been the music (Gloria, Mambo Number 5...classics!) It could've been that the bike was set up perfectly. It could've been the good, productive day that I had. Whatever it was, I totally rocked it. I kept up with the music, didn't need to rest, and was really cranking up the resistance. It feel good!

Towards the end of class, it hit m... Mon, 30 Aug 2010 19:54:35 EST Buh Bump! Lately, I've been cruising smoothly along on my wonderful Spark journey. I've been trying new workouts (love spinning!), cooking tasty healthy recipes, building muscle, even losing weight on occasion. I've been waving to my fellow Spark buddies, welcoming new travelers & sharing stories & encouragement with old friends. Life was good.

Then, buh bump...SPEED BUMP!

I must have missed the signs. The past several days have been hard. A few things have happened, some S... Thu, 26 Aug 2010 22:58:47 EST Lake Tahoe Wedding Weekend in Pictures On July 24th, my sister & her fiance were married at Lake Tahoe. It was also my parents' anniversary, so we ambushed them with a surprise wedding vow renewal. Here are pictures from that special weekend.

A great shot of Lydia's beautiful wedding dress

Marco didn't want to see Lydia before the wedding. Here he is climbing back up the mountain once we made sure she was well hidden.
<img src="... Sun, 8 Aug 2010 22:20:42 EST My First Vision Collage After several years of being a SparkPeople member, I finally decided to make my first vision collage. Here it is:

There are three races I really want to run (I never imagined running ANYWHERE before I joined SP!) I plan to run the Turkey Trot this year & the Flying Pig next year. The Disney Princess Half Marathon is my ultimate reward for reaching my goals. I expect to run it in 2012.

Th... Sun, 1 Aug 2010 14:48:07 EST The Memory's the First Thing to Go I recently crossed my 50 lbs lost mark. It took so long to reach that point, so I was thrilled about my accomplishment. I even considered writing a “halfway to goal” blog with before & after pictures and what I’ve learned along the way.

Last week a friend said she was considering resetting her SparkPeople account. While she thought a fresh start would be motivating, the idea made me uncomfortable. I’m a numbers girl, so I couldn’t fathom deleting all my stats since I joined SP ... Mon, 19 Jul 2010 00:31:52 EST Bridesmaid Dress Shopping My sister's getting married in two weeks & I'm her maid of honor. They're having a morning ceremony at Lake Tahoe. The decision to have destination wedding was a spur of the moment thing, so we've been scrambling a little to book flights, hotels, etc. Their original date was in September, so we hadn't been bridesmaid dress shopping yet. After two weekends of shopping, here's the dress we found:

Isn't it cute? No... Fri, 9 Jul 2010 12:15:56 EST How Do I Make It Better?

My daughter Laura went to her senior prom last night. She went with Gary, her boyfriend that she's been seeing for about three months & who she's crazy about. She's been to prom twice before, but since this was her last one, it was special. The process of getting ready for prom was so much fun...finding the perfect dress, jewelry, shoes. She got a fake tan (which was a little streaky, thanks to me.) She even g... Sun, 16 May 2010 07:29:02 EST Fat Girls Run Too! We've had some beautiful weather here in Cincinnati over the last several days. I decided to take advantage of the mild temperature & go jogging at Voice of America Park. It's a popular spot because of its smooth, paved path around a nice pond. When I got there, I realized I left both my watch & cell phone at home. I had no way to time my laps or intervals. I thought about running back home, but I decided to just stick it out.

It ended up being one of the most relaxing & comfo... Sun, 21 Mar 2010 23:38:43 EST A WooHoo! Reality Check I've been a little frustrated lately because I've hit a plateau. We've all been through it & know how irritating it can be to gain & lose the same few pounds over & over. Anyway, today I walked into my daughter's room & she had this photo on her bedside table:

(that's my dad Jerry, me, my sister Lydia aka BRIDGIE1028, Mom & my DD Laura)

This picture was taken in 2003. It had been a while since I ... Sat, 6 Mar 2010 18:41:26 EST Where, Oh Where Did My Motivation Go? One of my main goals this year was to lose 25 lbs by my sister's wedding on 6/19/2010. I'm in the wedding, so the possibility of wearing a sleeveless dress in public was all the incentive I needed. Until last week, I was doing really well; I had lost 14 lbs & exercised almost every day since the beginning of the year.

Then I found out the wedding was postponed. Two things before I go on: 1) there's nothing wrong between my sister & her fiancé. They were originally going to hav... Wed, 17 Feb 2010 22:37:17 EST She'll Always be a Baby to Me It's official...I'm the mother of an adult. My daughter Laura turned 18 last week. This milestone didn't affect me nearly as much as I thought it would. It only bothered me a little when she kept asking "Don't you feel OLD?" over & over again. I think I already mourned the loss of her childhood during my week of revelations last month (as an update, she failed the English class & I found out she didn't stop smoking cigarettes. Neither surprised me.)

What did surprise me is how... Tue, 1 Dec 2009 15:46:55 EST Bright Lights, Big Hills
On November 22nd, I participated in the 1st Annual Holiday in Lights 5K in Sharon Woods. I decided to run a 5K after attending the SparkPeople Convention in Cincinnati (thanks to Coach Nicole & Coach Nancy for their inspiration!) My little sister (BRIDGIE1028) wanted to come, so she drove down from Columbus to join in on the fun.

We got to Sharon Woods about an hour before start time. I thought that, since it ... Tue, 1 Dec 2009 14:10:41 EST Running & Retirement Communities Just Don't Mix Sometimes I started week 3 of C25K tonight. I had a really tight schedule, but I squeezed my run between picking Laura up from practice & a band booster meeting.

Since the time change, it gets dark during my run, so I've been scouting different well-lit routes. There's a nice bike path that runs along a main street in town, so I put on my exercise gear & headed down the road.

As I finished the warm-up, I approached the entrance of our local retirement community. As I crossed ... Thu, 5 Nov 2009 22:13:03 EST Rough Week to be a Mom A couple of weeks ago, I said on my status that I felt like a failure as a mom. Thanks to my friends who responded with kind words & encouragement, without even knowing the details. I'm finally ready to blog about what happened.

The week started by finding out that my daughter Laura, who's currently failing English, had been lying to me for weeks about completing her assignments. She told me that she could focus on her reading (which has been a problem) over at her friend Stepha... Tue, 3 Nov 2009 23:40:19 EST I'm really going to do it! I had a fantastic time at the Cincinnati SP convention. The stories, the information, the friendships all renewed my spark in ways I never would have imagined. Coach Nancy's story, coupled with Coach Nicole's & Stepf's blogs about the Teddy Bear 5K, inspired me & motivated me to take the plunge: I'm going to run my first 5K.

I walked my first 5K last year. It was a blast! I always thought I was too fat to run at all, let alone run over 3 miles. A few months ago, I decided to ... Fri, 9 Oct 2009 00:16:41 EST To All My SP Friends...Sorry! I just wanted to take a minute to apologize to anyone that read my birthday whinefest (AKA my last blog.) I was so focused on how much I dreaded being alone on my 40th birthday that I had a completely lousy day. I thought I'd take a few minutes to vent & get it out of my system.

What I didn't consider was that other people might actually read what I can only describe as my word vomit. Honestly, I was shocked when I went to my blog page accidentally & saw two comments waiting f... Thu, 24 Sep 2009 00:14:43 EST 40 bites...I'm going back to 39. Today is my 40th birthday. Normally birthdays don't bother me. This one really sucks. Not because I'm getting older - that doesn't really matter. It's where I am in life that's really depressing me right now. I'm a fat, never-married single mother that hasn't had a date in years. I essentially work alone in a job that just pays the bills. I have acquaintances, but but no close friends that I confide in or go out with. The people I'm closest to - my daughter & my mom - haven't even wis... Tue, 8 Sep 2009 15:30:03 EST Jillian Michaels Makes Me Sick
I've been doing well with my cardio, but I really haven't done strength training on a regular basis. So, last I week I decided to splurge & order Jillian Michaels' No More Trouble Zones DVD. I picked it up tonight, popped it in the DVD player & got to work.

I now understand why some of the Biggest Loser contestants throw up during their workouts. My heart was beating out of my chest after only the first circuit... Wed, 8 Apr 2009 22:31:49 EST I Am NOT The Biggest Loser We had a Biggest Loser competition at my workplace that ended yesterday. I came in second place! I lost 28 lbs, or about 13.5% of my body weight, in 11 weeks. The person who came in first lost 58 lbs (wow!). I can't even imagine losing that much weight in only 3 months.

It was so exciting when the contest supervisor came in this morning & counted out $300.00 cash into my hands! Most of the money will go to my daughter's school fees that I haven't been able to afford. I do pla... Tue, 31 Mar 2009 21:08:32 EST Girls Just Wanna Have Fun! If you ever want a good laugh, pull out some of those old fitness videos. Not the Pilates DVD from a few years ago. Really reach to the back of your entertainment center & find that VCR tape from the 1980s. Now that's a party waiting to happen!

OK, maybe that's overkill, but I really had fun doing my Jane Fonda's Low Impact Aerobic Workout tape tonight. I'm purging my DVD/tape collection, so I thought I'd play this one more time before I got rid of it. It wasn't much of an aer... Mon, 30 Mar 2009 21:56:59 EST No Broken Bones - Yeah! My daughter, her boyfriend & I did something tonight I haven't done in 15 years - roller skating! My last time skating didn't end very well. I fell during a race, breaking my tailbone. It was years before I sit comfortably. So I was a little hesitant when Laura asked me if I wanted to go skating with them.

Boy, I'm glad I went! There were only about 50 people, mostly nice kids & teens. They played a lot of music I liked - even some disco! According to Fitness Tracker, I bu... Sat, 21 Mar 2009 00:45:04 EST Virtual Walk to Disney World Since my last post, I've walked 99.95 miles. I've walked a total of 318.06 on my trip, and I've got 603.03 miles to go.

I passed through Knoxville during this leg of my trip. I also walked through the town of Disney (how appropriate!) Now, I'm near Athens, TN. In the past, I'd go to the largest Russell Stover store in Tennessee. Instead, I'll take the Mayfield Dairy Farms tour & treat myself to a little bit of ice cream. Afterwards, I'll wander through Sunshine Hollow Gardens... Sun, 15 Feb 2009 19:24:59 EST WDW Walk Update I've walked 52.87 miles since my last post (not really...these are actually the last of my 2008 miles.) That makes 218.11 miles so far & 702.98 miles left on my journey.

I'm about 12 miles south of Jellico Mountain, near Pioneer, TN. I'm going to spend the night at Black Pine Cabin on Stinking Creek Rd (love the name of that road!). Tomorrow, I've got the choice of several mountains in the area to climb, like Hackle Knob, Gobbler Knob, & Braden Mountain. Bixie, since I'm from ... Fri, 6 Feb 2009 23:27:54 EST Back on the Road to Disney World
At long last, I've put on my sneakers & I'm on the road again to WDW. Actually, I'll be doing catching up a little in my next two blogs, mapping some miles I previously logged.

Since the last blog, I logged & mapped approximately 48.25 miles. That would make 165.24 miles so far, with 755.85 miles to go. The last city I passed was London, KY. Despite the chilly weather, I think I'll camp at the Levi Jackson St... Fri, 30 Jan 2009 22:37:41 EST Dinner at Olive Garden My daughter & I wanted Olive Garden for dinner tonight. I went on their website & decided on my meal. Salad with low-fat Italian dressing, whole wheat Linguine alla Marinara, and one breadstick. Yum!

I order exactly what I planned. When the waiter brought the salad & breadsticks, he brought a regular bowl of salad. When I reminded him I ordered the salad with low-fat Italian, he told me that the House was the only Italian dressing that they have & that it was low fat. I dou... Thu, 29 Jan 2009 23:08:18 EST Good Day, Bad Day The good:
1. I had a very productive and relatively stress-free day at work.
2. My daughter & I had really some nice time together before she went to work.
3. I started exercising again & enjoyed a peaceful walk at Rose Hill Cemetery.
41

The bad:
1. My stomach feels as if I'll be recreating the scene from Alien at any moment (I'll be sure to turn on the webcam if it does!)
2. I gained two pounds, which means I had to switch my profile... Mon, 21 Apr 2008 21:23:49 EST Walking to Disney World I'm doing a virtual walk from my home in Mason, Ohio to Disney World. I've walked 38.47 miles since my last update. That makes 116.99 miles so far, with 804.01 miles to go.

Using Google Earth, I'm currently around Richmond, KY. I'm going to visit Fort Boonesborough, which was established by Daniel Boone in 1775. After learning about some regional history, I'll go kill some brain cells at the Acres of Land Winery. Actually, I'll stop at one glass of wine & enjoy the relaxing mu... Wed, 9 Apr 2008 23:46:39 EST A Little Fishy I picked my weight ticker because it's cute. What's not to like about a little fish, happily swimming to the other side of the pond?

Recently, I've made a discovery: my fish is a salmon. And his poor little fins are getting tired from swimming upstream. He made great progress at first, excitedly heading to his goal. Last month, he started floundering (a little aquatic humor). He's barely moved over the past four weeks, even losing his fight against the current & moving backw... Tue, 8 Apr 2008 23:57:36 EST Walking to WDW Update I've logged 17.84 miles since my last blog. This makes a total of 78.52 miles since I started my walk to Disney World. Only 842.48 miles to go!

I've just passed Georgetown, KY, a few miles north of Lexington. If it was summer, I'd be watching the Bengals at their training camp. Instead, I'll visit the Kentucky Horse Park before leaving the area. I remember how much fun it was to ride the horses there when I was a kid.

Speaking of being a kid (now at heart), I'm lis... Thu, 27 Mar 2008 19:35:00 EST Coming off the Sugar High I think my diabetic coma is finally over.

I finished an entire bag of Reese's Pieces Eggs in just two days. Pretty impressive, huh? For some reason, I decided it was more important to snort straight sugar than to exercise an ounce of self-control.

Honestly, it was just some old self-defeating habit rearing its ugly head again. I reached my lowest weight in over 16 years last week (WOOHOO for me!). I think I got scared that I would fail again, or that I'd succeed bu... Wed, 26 Mar 2008 21:38:13 EST Walking to Disney World Update I've been able to walk 33.84 miles since my last update. This puts me in Harrison County. This is an agricultural community & is one of the top tobacco and beef cattle producers in Kentucky. The Seldon Renaker Inn in Cynthiana looks like a comfortable place to stop for the night, and in the morning I can take a tour of the town's old churches & cemeteries. Wed, 19 Mar 2008 23:20:52 EST The Ramblings of Little Miss Crabby Pants I have been off-kilter all day. I think it was a carry-over a couple things that happened over the weekend. First, two dear friends of mine are moving to Las Vegas. Actually, one has already moved out & the other will be joining him in about three weeks. I spent some time with Chris over the weekend and, when we said good night, he gave me an extra-long hug. We talked about getting together again before he leaves, but it honestly felt like a goodbye hug. He's been a bright light in my l... Mon, 17 Mar 2008 23:36:30 EST Disney World Walk I've logged 11.98 miles since my last blog. I have passed the Florence Y'All water tower (Google it if you're not from the area) & am now just southeast of Union, Kentucky. I'm going to stop by the Boone County Arboretum & enjoy the beautiful snow before it all melts! Mon, 10 Mar 2008 23:01:17 EST Sooooo Close! On March 1st, I walked in my first 5K. It was called the 5K 4A Cause in Glendale, Ohio, and it was a blast! I thought I was in trouble when I was already out of breath after only a few minutes. I was just so nervous & excited when the starting pistol went off! I was finally able to settle down & focus on the walk.

The best part was that my daughter came to support me. She walked the last leg of the race with me. Laura even told me she was proud of me (something you don't get ... Wed, 5 Mar 2008 23:16:59 EST Walking to Disney World Since Disney World is my favorite vacation destination, I've decided to walk there. Thanks to inspiration from JQUANDT88, I will track my progress on the route on Google Earth & post it on my blog.

From my house to Disney World, it will be 921 miles. So far this year, I have logged 26.84 miles. I've actually walked farther, but I keep forgetting to wear my pedometer! Anyway, this puts me in Crescent Springs in Northern Kentucky. Their community park looks like a nice, peacef... Sun, 2 Mar 2008 12:28:58 EST
