It was not an auspicious beginning since they couldn't find my bib when I went to the registration table. I got another one with a new chip, but somehow, my results don't show - it's almost as if I didn't run the race. I checked the official race photos, and my picture is there. Too bad, I actually broke an eleven minute mile for the first time! I do not like running in a big pack, though. I like my solitary runs when I don't have to navigate the ebb and flow of... Wed, 6 Jun 2012 17:01:13 EST Fear and Loathing of the Swimsuit http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4879893 My husband and I are taking a motorcycle trip next weekend and will be staying at a hotel with a pool. For most of the family trips that we have taken the past few years, I have avoided pools and in doing so, avoided having to wear a swimsuit. Since the weather will be nice and swimming is great exercise, I have decided that this is the time to overcome the fear and loathing. My last few suits (when I actually had to get in the pool because the girls were small and didn't swim) were always t... Sun, 13 May 2012 21:15:07 EST Goals http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4874631 Reading Wolfkitty's blog about Adventure Goals for 2012, reminded me that I really need to get
some of my goals out on paper.

1. Walk the Nike Women's Half Virtual Marathon - Done!
2. Walk/Run 1000 miles in 2012 Challenge (Nike+ Site) - In progress
3. Walk/Run 212 in 2012 Challenge (Nike+ Site) - Done!
4. Wed, 9 May 2012 21:40:42 EST Spring in My Step http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4803842 Well, it is Spring although you might not know it from the rain and cool temps we have had the past few days. The various aches and conditions have also not made me personally feel very spring-y. I have a wedding to attend in a few weeks, so I made my way out to the local mall (dragging along my DH) to find a dress. Now I have not lost any weight in quite a while, despite improving my overall fitness level, so I was not looking forward to this task.

When I walked into the store, ... Sun, 25 Mar 2012 11:30:19 EST Status Check http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4792122 It has been over a month since my last blog post. I haven't lost any more weight - really the last few pounds tend to come and go. It is time to get off of this plateau and make some forward progress!

Work has been stressful and has taken a toll on my system with continual flare-ups. I am still finding new trigger foods. I may need to slip back into FODMAPs mode at some point to get a handle on the food triggers. I am still walking and running and fencing (a bit). I refuse to let t... Sat, 17 Mar 2012 13:38:51 EST Getting by http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4739219 It's been a bit of a struggle this past week with an IBS flare up. I felt awful during my weekend runs and had to walk more than I could run. Poor DH goofed and used a dried bean mix for dinner on Saturday that had wheat in it. I felt so bad on Sunday morning and couldn't figure out what I could have eaten until I looked at the package. I think he'll be reading things more carefully from now on.

I had lunch with my Mom and Aunt yesterday. Both have been diagnosed with diabetes. N... Tue, 14 Feb 2012 21:56:27 EST Road Trip http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4707956 Tomorrow I am heading off to Winter CHA in Anaheim. Travelling is always difficult with dietary restrictions and even more so on this particular trip. We are so busy at the convention center that meal times are never regular and the food available is terrible. I am taking snacks and breakfast fixings. I will certainly be doing lots of walking... Fri, 27 Jan 2012 23:15:02 EST First Fitness Goal for 2012 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4682656 I walked the Nike Women's Half Marathon today with two friends. I had no doubts that I could do it when I signed up in December, but I did not count that I would be having regular pain in the arch of my left foot that would have affected my workouts for the past three weeks. I made sure to take enough Motrin before starting to minimize any inflammation/pain and did pretty well until we hit eleven miles. After that, I really started to notice the overall pain in my feet, in my back, etc. There... Sun, 15 Jan 2012 18:30:22 EST And the cupboard was bare... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4624419 just like my closet after the big purge this weekend. I did pick up a few pairs of pants for work and some jeans, but other than that, I truly don't have much to wear. I have no skirts or suits, so I hope that I do not have dress for any meetings or presentations. After the holidays I will go to the local outlets to pick up a few coordinates. Until then, I'll be quite casual. Tue, 13 Dec 2011 16:50:23 EST Allez (or Back to the Piste)! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4619006 Okay, I did it. I went fencing last night for the first time in fifteen years! I was able to wear all of my old kit and did not split anything. Nor did I fall despite the fact that my old competition shoes no longer have enough traction and were slippery even on pavement. I guess my reward for achieving this goal will be a new pair of fencing shoes. Oh, and I also am officially halfway to my weight loss goal. Another reason to celebrate! Fri, 9 Dec 2011 11:28:45 EST What to Wear http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4617745 I never thought that losing a few pounds would make such a difference in how my clothes fit. All of my slacks for work are noticeably baggy and I don't really have the time (or money) to shop right now. I am going to have to stop by Ross or something to get a few pairs of interim pants. I don't want to do the major investment in my professional wardrobe at this stage. However, my glen plaid menswear vest now fits me quite well - I just look better on the top half! Thu, 8 Dec 2011 12:03:09 EST Sparking Again http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4615298 I am doing my best to stick with my program despite all of the distractions and temptations of the holidays. I have gotten through my first party of the season! I made a pumpkin roasted red pepper hummus dip and brought crackers that I knew I could eat with it and also made sure to have some food at home before we went. This weekend will be tougher - we are going to the Dickens Fair and I am going out to tea on Sunday with friends. There isn't much that I can have at a tea parlor, but the co... Tue, 6 Dec 2011 18:27:24 EST Some Good, Some Not So Good http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4605912 We went camping last week over the long Thanksgiving Day weekend. I was able to change up a few recipes to make them GF and CF for me. I didn't gorge on the food, but I was not able to do as much exercise (other than hiking and walking) as I would normally do. We had spotty internet connection, so I wasn't able to track all of my food, either. I was surprised to find that I had lost another pound and a half when we returned home.

I have been changing up my cardio workouts in the g... Wed, 30 Nov 2011 11:46:27 EST Date Night http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4591170 Yesterday was a challenge. I am in midst of another flareup and I felt terrible. Of course we had tickets to a concert and had planned to go out to dinner before the show. Eating out is always a challenge and it is even more so when I am having a flareup. We ended up at an Italian restaurant. Being GF and CF makes it even more interesting! I managed to find a dish that did not have dairy or gluten and did not have any focaccia. Of course, DH had to have tiramisu - that was always one of my fa... I do not often weigh myself and I have only taken my measurements once since I started on SP. I put on my GS leader outfit for a ceremony yesterday and realized that it looked a bit too big on me. I took out the tape measure and confirmed that I have lost an inch from my waist, an inch from my hips and an inch from my upper arms. The thigh measurement remains the same, but this was never my problem area thanks to years of fencing. Now if I could just lose that... Sat, 12 Nov 2011 11:19:52 EST Maintaining http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4568122 I have been maintaining the weight loss, but often feel like I should see more progress. That ticker does not move very often, at all!

My blood glucoselevels have been higher and it's hard to figure out why without changes in diet or routine to account for the increases. I don't want to take any medications, so I really want to bring things back to the levels I had a few weeks ago. I am sure I must be stressing myself out, but these life changing health conditions ARE a bit overw... Fri, 4 Nov 2011 11:08:13 EST Back in the Swing http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4549424 Traveling did wreak a bit of havoc on my system despite my bringing food and working out. I wasn't away long enough for my body to adjust to the disruption in my routine, However, I am back and continuing with my program. I did read the China Study while I was away. Interesting stuff, especially since it directly addresses health concerns that I have for myself and my family.

I did my fasting lipid panel test yesterday and had great results. I just need to move the HDL number a b... Sun, 23 Oct 2011 16:05:08 EST Traveling http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4540288 I am off to a work conference for a few days. This is always my worst nightmare - days of restaurant food that make me ill! I am bringing some oatmeal with flax to have in the mornings in my room and bringing some raw almonds and fruit for snacks. I have also packed my workout clothes. I hope that working out will improve the way I feel and that my system will not be so impacted by the end of the week. Mon, 17 Oct 2011 18:06:03 EST In a Flurry http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4532925 It was a busy weekend this past week. We spent all day Saturday at the Renaissance Faire walking around. Keeping hydrated and finding appropriate food was a fun task. On Sunday I took some of my Girl Scout Troop to an orienteering meet. Although finding the controls was easy for the girls, the hiking was not! It was a lovely day for a hike, though. My calves were sore enough on Monday to warrant taking it easy. Good thing it was a work holiday so I spent my time crafting, cooking and running ... Wed, 12 Oct 2011 22:19:56 EST When it rains... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4520544 The past few days have not been great. I am in the middle of a flare-up which definitely seems tied to my stress levels and hormones. The pain and reactions are bad enough this morning for me to stay home. We're in the middle of the first major downpour of the season, so it matches my mood.

It didn't help that my visit to the nutritionist made me emotional yesteday. I didn't learn all that much. I really just wanted to know what my calorie and carb goals should be. My glucose leve... Wed, 5 Oct 2011 10:27:24 EST Maybe it's rubbing off... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4513584 I have been sharing some of my efforts with my spouse. He isn't into tracking things or sharing online. In other words, he isn't interested. He does have some of the same health issues that I have, but because he takes medication he does not eat as healthfully as he should and he does not exercise. This morning he admitted to me that since he has started eating a better breakfast, he has been able to zip up his motorcycle jacket more easily . Maybe just maybe, he will join me on this journey. Sat, 1 Oct 2011 12:07:23 EST Not at My Best http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4509355 Despite eating carefully and healthfully, I managed to have a flare up this week. This tends to mess with my sleep and makes for long days. I didn't feel like doing my cardio today and indeed I felt like things were conspiring to prevent me from completing the workout (I had to stop and untangle my lace from the bike pedal and also stop to use the restroom). I completed it, anyway!

I have been doing a lot of cooking in the past few days for my family. I get to eat with them and eat... Wed, 28 Sep 2011 21:55:43 EST R-Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4500759 Tomorrow is the big day, my high school reunion. I haven't taken off any more weight (and the latest pound lost goes back and forth). I do find my that I am pulling some things out of the closet that I have not worn in awhile. I am not convinced that they all fit me any better than they did the last time I wore them, I just think that I have a bit more confidence about my body, no matter what the scale continues to read. Perhaps a good walk/run tomorrow in the AM will be just the ticket to b... Fri, 23 Sep 2011 20:37:15 EST Going for It (or watching too much What Not to Wear) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4490928 Next weekend is my thirtieth high school reunion. I went through my closet a few weeks ago and picked out an outfit to wear (long sleeve wrap top and evening pants) that fit me in my current state and got three thumbs up from my household fashion consultants, aka my family. I had decided to go out and get new shoes.

I have been doing my stationery biking during my lunch breaks at work and have caught a few episodes of "What Not to Wear." One episode featured a woman around my age... Sun, 18 Sep 2011 11:28:23 EST Tough Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4487143 It was a tough day. I went in for a GI test that made me feel much worse that I have been feeling since I have been working on my health. I certainly didn't feel like working out afterward. I actually took a nap after I finally got to eat. I hardly ever nap, but I certainly must have needed it. So, I didn't make my running workout, but I did walk for over an hour. Thu, 15 Sep 2011 20:25:11 EST Some Challenges http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4482943 I went away for a women's weekend that I attend each year. Most of us are over forty-five and quite a few have chronic health issues. This was the first year that I was a member of this group. It was a challenge to find food that I could eat (even though there were some vegan/GF options). I ended up eating more carbs than I should since there weren't many other options that fit within my current diet. It was a learning experience. I learned that being off of my normal routine affects my blo... Tue, 13 Sep 2011 15:16:11 EST Small Victory http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4472356 I dug out my fencing gear this weekend. Last year at this time I could not zip my jacket closed. This weekend I was able to zip up both the knickers and the jacket. Now I will need a bit more room for the plastron and chest protector before I can fence, but this is a small step on the way back. Now to work on some of those lunges... 9 Wed, 7 Sep 2011 20:39:32 EST Change of Habits http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4467243 Took the family out to the Scottish Games yesterday. Knowing that I couldn't eat any of the food there, I brought my food and lots of water. I must admit that I missed being able to have a lemon curd tartlet or a piece of shortbread at the tea room, but that is a small thing compared to my overall health. W hen I am back to a more normalized diet (with wheat), I know that I can create some healthier things to have with a cuppa tea.

<img src="http://photos-ak.sparkpeople.com... Mon, 5 Sep 2011 10:58:26 EST Sore, but feeling good http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4463389 I have completed my first full week of workouts . I am stiff and sore, but so glad that I was able to take the first steps to improving my quality of life. The workouts are actually easier than following the FODMAPs diet, counting carbs and testing blood glucose all the time. Fri, 2 Sep 2011 22:38:16 EST
