We've been together over a year now. I adopted you as a replacement for ,'the one that got away!' I've religiously worn you everyday, never putting you through the washing machine, endeavouring to do my best, challenging friends, even persuading my DH to adopt your cousin Fitbit HR to keep you company.

And then it happened! Last week, I had to have major surgery, so, although you came with me to hospital, I left you in my handbag as I wasn't walking anywhere. Day ... Mon, 21 Mar 2016 15:35:12 EST Post-hysterectomy, determined to avoid iron tablets http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6123664 On Friday, the day I was due to be discharged, my haemaglobin levels were checked. It was decided to prescribe iron tablets, as I seem to be anaemic, but no doctor followed up to discuss how anaemic. Now, I've been prescribed iron tablets before and I don't intend to take them again. The thing is, they constipate me, so I've made my mind up to tackle this head on, with nutrition. I have started to track iron on my food tracker and researched what foods are high in iron. Luckily, I like them,... Sun, 20 Mar 2016 15:14:11 EST 4 days post-op - finally home!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6122958 Yesterday, I thought I would be going home. Then, part way through the afternoon, the Drs decided to test my haemaglobin levels; they were low, so iron tablets are the plan. Iron tablets constipated me, so I will try the natural way to add iron to my diet. I'm pretty good at eating to a target, whether it be fibre or other nutrients. The only problem was, as they were waiting for my blood results to come back, so they didn't process my other meds. As I'm on Tramadol, which is a controlled dru... Sat, 19 Mar 2016 14:48:40 EST 3 days post-op - time to go home! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6121946 So, I've made it to 3 days without any dramas; I'm just waiting for the consultant to come and see me, hopefully to discharge me. I've been a model patient and now I'm ready to convalesce in the comfort of my own home.

The nursing and auxiliary staff all do their best, but,

'There's no place like home!'

I shall blog again, once I've made it to the outside. I feel too healthy to be here any longer. There's too much negativity among the 'healthier' patients. At... Fri, 18 Mar 2016 04:39:12 EST 2 days post-op http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6121470 Yesterday I wrote my first blog in hospital as I floated along on my morphine cloud. It helped with the pain and after I finished that blog, I drifted off into deep slumber. And how I needed that!

I must have slept for eight hours solidly, with only a couple of brief interludes, when my closest bed neighbour was being checked over by nurses and insisted on sharing her experience with the whole ward at high decibel levels, however she is only to be forgiven, as she is terminally ill... Thu, 17 Mar 2016 13:40:21 EST Post-op, still in hospital, time to blog! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6120854 So, big update time....

5 years ago, following the discovery of one huge fibroid, I decided upon a myomectomy for its removal. I was at the time not ready for the finality of a hysterectomy, despite being sterilised in the year 2000. Afterwards, I decided that, should fibroids return, that this would be the time to do so, when I would be emotionally ready.

Last year, my previous symptoms returned and so I took myself off to see the doctor in readiness. I explained that I... Wed, 16 Mar 2016 18:27:23 EST Family gatherings..... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6100704 My stepdaughter is married to a liberal Jew. The family are lovely and we are always included in family occasions. There are 2 step granddaughters. Isla is 20 months old - her blessing was last year and she screamed throughout the service and her party. Today was Imogen's blessing; both girls slept through the service and there were no histrionics at all. Imogen is 2 months old and better with crowds. Isla takes a lot if time to get used to people - she is also crafty. I seem to have hit it ... Sat, 20 Feb 2016 17:35:39 EST Lunch date with hubby in Spanish Michelin starred restaurant - it can be done! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6097507 This morning I dutifully got up, washed up after last night's dinner with my niece, made juice, ate my cereal and drove to the gym after scraping off the ice from my frozen car. I parked right away from the entrance and made my way in. After this month, I will have 2 months off, recuperating after my hysterectomy in early March, so I want to be fit for surgery and recovery. This week I have upped the reps on my exercises and I am now rowing for 3 X 10 minutes, twice the time of when I started... We followed the dragon as it visited restaurants for good luck and wandered about buying a few souvenirs and collecting freebies.

<img src="http://photosaws.sparkpeople.com/guid/4cab6f43-1e70-4796-b3c0-9e8b018... Sat, 13 Feb 2016 17:25:58 EST 5kg added to my chest press, 10 minutes more rowing, and so it goes on... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6094511 I had a sleep-in today, for me, 7:30. I took my time with breakfast and got ready for the gym, leaving just after 9:00 - big mistake! It was really busy and I had to swap round my workout, BUT I pushed myself more - I did 25 minutes of rowing, bringing my workout to over an hour. Last night my daughter helped me make up a playlist - what a difference that made to my workout!!

After the workout, I booked a massage for Monday after my gym session. I'm pleased with my progress so far ... Fri, 12 Feb 2016 17:17:29 EST No more teaching for a few weeks... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6093717 I taught a lovely class today, mostly boys with one girl, but all kids I'd taught before, and all pretty well behaved. So the day went well.

My daughter's day wasn't so good. She had a vaccination for meningitis and was only told yesterday that it would be done today. That led to stress, an anxiety attack and a headache although it went off well. She went to bed before dinner and only got up to eat, although she did share some of her music with me so that I can finally make up a pl... Thu, 11 Feb 2016 16:58:53 EST A long day, but good! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6092870 Up at 6:15 for the gym. Went on the Boditrax machine, with good results. Then went to stepdaughter's to arty on with bathroom tiling. Hubby cooked tonight - delicious baked potatoes with bacon, veggies and cheese.
Too tired and teaching tomorrow, so a longer blog tomorrow.
Happy Sparking!! Wed, 10 Feb 2016 16:38:02 EST Pancakes on Pancake Day and all within my allowance... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6092019 I covered the upper junior class today at school. This morning I taught food technology and we made pancakes. This afternoon we had an assembly to celebrate Chinese New Year and we had veggie stir fry and spring rolls. Tonight, my husband made paella and then I made more pancakes.

I ate pancakes and spring rolls, allowing for everything within my allowances.

I enjoyed it all and ate within my allowances.

It CAN be done!!!! As I was getting dressed for gym, I mislaid my Fitbit so had to go without it. My husband found it before I got back, luckily, but I was irritated - it's the same colour as the carpet!!

Lots of cuddles with the newest step-granddaughter, as well as being chief assistant to my husband. Mon, 8 Feb 2016 16:57:02 EST Sunday morning, the rain has stopped and the sun is shining! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6089782 Yesterday was wet and miserable for the most part. We did our weekly food shop and came out in blustery winds. In the afternoon we went to visit a tenant, who is recovering incredibly from a bleed on the brain, at 81. We didn't think he was going to make it, but this week he came home from brain injury rehab for a visit with his OT and Physio, making it upstairs on his own. Wow!

While we were out, I set dinner cooking in the Slowcooker; sweet potato, onion, red pepper, chickpeas, s... Then I came home, put my face on and met my sister for coffee; we keep our meetings occasional even though we only live a mile apart and that works!

After that, the best part of today...

My 3 BFFs came over for lunch and a leisurely dip in the hot tub. Fri, 5 Feb 2016 17:14:42 EST Work, then gym, woo hoo! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6087860 I managed to get away from school earlier today and still got to the gym just after 4pm, but the receptionist let me in. If it happens too often, I'll have to upgrade my membership from off peak, but hopefully I won't need to, as generally I'll go to the gym in the morning on the days I'm not teaching.

School was fun, getting the younger children making Chinese paper lanterns amongst other things.

Since the new year I've been tracking diligently and coming up against my ... Thu, 4 Feb 2016 16:58:32 EST Called in to teach today, then went to the gym... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6086966 I had planned to start on a set of curtains today, but I had a phone call to go in to teach mainly English. I also taught a cookery lesson and supported a trainee teacher in a science lesson. I had also wanted to go to the gym early, but, as I couldn't get there early, took my gym bag to school and drove there after school. Now my gym membership is off peak, so that means I have to get to the gym before 4pm on weekdays and after 2pm at weekends. That's usually ok, but not today as I left sch... Once I got up, the intentions started to wane. Once I had prepared my daughter's lunch, drunk my herbal tea, made juice and taken my vitamins, did I really feel like exercising at 7:30 am?? Honestly ? No! Did I exercise at 7:30? Yes indeed, because I knew that if I started to put off the moment, it would be pushed away all day. So, 30 minutes later, I had done my salsa workout and felt good, because I got through it more easily and because I had don... Tue, 2 Feb 2016 16:58:19 EST i'm an extremely proud mummy!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6085062 The morning started slowly, very slowly. I couldn't face exercising as I was feeling stressed at the prospect of driving my car with no dashboard instruments showing. Then, as we were leaving, I found that the battery was flat, due to the other problem with the car. Well, we jump started the car and set off. An hour and 45 minutes later, we got to the company that specialises in these matters, near Portsmouth. We got sent off to have a coffee for a while. The car was fixed in less than an hou... Mon, 1 Feb 2016 16:45:52 EST Back home now for a few weeks, with an intro to my French village http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6082554 Got back last night, after a week away. We've had the house in France for 18 months now and as the time moves on, we are slowly getting it as we'd like it. The downstairs us now done, the kitchen being the last part to be done. Now fir upstairs...

Every morning I walk to the corner to get fresh bread; I'm getting very good at chatting about the weather in French lol.
Here are some pics of my walk home, the slightly longer way back.

<img src="http://photosaws.sparkp... Fri, 29 Jan 2016 17:36:40 EST Day 5 in Lavalette - more walking and shopping! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6079858 Today started well with a 30 minute salsa DVD workout. I decided to walk more all day, avoiding standing still whenever possible, eg. Walking when I was cleaning polish off my fingernails - it worked, as I did 11500 steps on my Fitbit today.
I also cleaned up 2 copper pots to be hung over the fireplace, as well as dusting the large pieces of furniture downstairs.
We went out to look for a large shade for a standard lamp; the first time we ame back with a tablecloth and napkins, the ... Tue, 26 Jan 2016 16:21:43 EST Day 4 in Lavalette, more work planned on the house http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6078927 This morning started badly. Usually, when I get up to exercise, I put on the kettle and make myself a fruit tea to sip as I work out. This morning I boiled the water, then poured, then BANG, boiling water everywhere and a mug broken cleanly in two. So, my workout was delayed while I cleared up. Luckily, I didn't get scalded, as it mostly went on the counter and also, I was still wearing my thick dressing gown.

<img src="http://photosaws.sparkpeople.com/guid/e548f1ec-2ab0-45ac-af62... Mon, 25 Jan 2016 15:58:54 EST Day 3 in Lavalette, another beautiful day! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6077980 Today started well. I walked to the local shop for bread, a croissant for Laurie and Clair's for tonight's dessert. Then I exercised for 30 minutes to one of my salsa exercise DVDs. Laurie cooked breakfast while I showered, then I made the fruit juice - pear, pineapple and melon.

After breakfast we drove into Carcassonne for the weekly 'vide grenier' or car boot sale. Success - I found a small milk churn with a sunflower design to match an existing metal jug. We are constantly look... Sun, 24 Jan 2016 16:02:08 EST Day 2 in paradise, or Lavalette at 16*C http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6077196 Today was set to be a warm day. Laurie wanted to sleep in, so I got up ready to do some cardio. As I don't have easy access to a gym here, I have brought copies of my favourite salsa exercise DVDs to keep and use here.today was a gentle session; tomorrow I'll do a longer one.

After a leisurely breakfast, we decided to trawl a few 'toro antes' or secondhand shops we like. We bought a table lamp and a jug. We also bought a curtain to go across a door where there is a draught.
<... Sat, 23 Jan 2016 16:45:11 EST 1st day back in France http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6076432 Ok, so we arrived last night, too late to shop. Luckily, we had planned ahead. There was a frozen dish of veal blanquette and some zucchini I'm our last visit in December. We've had the house in Lavalette in the Aude, in the south of France for 18 months now and come over here every month for at least a week. During our last visit, we had our new kitchen installed.

Today, our builders arrived to start tiling the patio. They got quite a lot done, until it started to rain.
<BR... Fri, 22 Jan 2016 16:39:17 EST Workout no.3 and away for a week from tomorrow http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6074721 So, off we went, third day in a row. I managed everything, although my 5 minute warm-up on the cross trainer was 3 minutes, 30 seconds to get my breath back, then 2 more minutes. The rest went swimmingly for me. Hubby not feeling too good today so I told him to take it easy. He's had some health worries recently, not easy for someone who used to be at the peak of fitness, but wants to get fit again, so is going to the gym too and watching his food intake too.
We'll both get there.
... Wed, 20 Jan 2016 17:11:31 EST Workout no.2 - yay! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6073856 Second gym workout completed this morning.

Still not a fan of the cross trainer, but decided to persevere. I'm supposed to do 6-8 minutes, but I managed 5, in one minute segments. I shall keep going until I can do 5 straight off, then I'll add in 1 minute every few days until I get there, to the 8.

I enjoy the rowing machine and also the strength exercises, but I can't say I particularly like the Power Plate, but again, I'll keep on with it until I either get used to it... Well, I took my husband to the gym too, but he decided to start off his static cycling, taking things a bit easier.

I managed the whole workout, as planned by the PT. The only bit I wasn't keen on, was the cross-trainer; maybe that will come with time... The rowing machine and everything else was fine; I'm e petting to be sore tomorrow or the next day. We'll go to the gym the ne t 2-3 days and then it's off to France for a week, so... I got to get ready for the gym.

It had snowed over night - a beautiful scene met my eyes through the kitchen window.
Luckily, it was only a scattering and I was able to get to the gym easily. When I arrived, the car park was almost empty, but when I left, there was a car ready to take my place.

The end of the induction went well. I now have a programme to follow for a month. I'm now the top of the list when a teacher calls in sick or when they have planned absences. I prefer it this way. I don't want to have a permanent position, however it's good to be in demand and be able to decide if and when to work.
This week has been fairly stressful as my husband had some medical test results to collect today.
GOOD NEWS - all clear for the big C, however we will have to keep aware as there is a probability o... Still pedalled!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6063308 So today I taught IT at the special school I do regular supply teaching at. In fact, it's now the only school I go to. I do a couple of days a week, at most 3, unless I haven't been there for a week or 2, in which case I have agreed to sometimes do more to help out. They like me to go there for the consistency that kids, particularly those with special educational needs really need. Thu, 7 Jan 2016 16:55:15 EST A great day, Christmas tree undressed, walked in the park, no rain! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6062339 So, being 6th January, I undressed our tree and took down cards, recycling them as gift tags, did some ironing and static cycling, then went for a walk in the park with my neighbour as we caught up with news and put the world to rights, feeding ducks, geese, swans and a heron, but not those pesky pigeons!
Dinner was yummy - veal in a garlic and lemon sauce, stir-fried mushrooms and leeks, and basmati rice, followed by a Muller Corner raspberry and blackberry yoghurt.
I even got my ... What definitely helped was fewer unhealthy snacks, less alcohol and more walking. What didn't help was a frozen shoulder from February and a recurrence of gynae issues.

On a positive note, we have a working kitchen in the French house, as of the beginning of December and our front garden at home has been levelled ready for some serious planting and smart railings installed to repl... Sat, 2 Jan 2016 05:59:22 EST The garden is beginning to take shape... and so am I !! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5927006 I thought it was about time I blogged again. Usually, I plan out my blog in my mind, then I don't get round to writing it.

This year has been one of ups and downs. We have finally been able to devote time to the garden, now that all of our flats are rented out, and of course the weather is better too. I have been taking plenty if photos too, so I though it would. Be good to share them.
... We took our neighbour, Dianne, with us for more company - a good choice as she's pretty easy going and lots of fun. She also has a Fitbit, so we kept our activity levels up and I wqas able to keep tabs on how much I was walking; ...
