PEPPERMINT125's SparkPeople Blog PEPPERMINT125's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community 10 year SparkAnniversary I am on a team Sparkteam Class of February 17-23, 2008. The team captain reminded us that our 10 year SparkAnniversary is this week.

I didn't realize it was 10 years! How time has flown. We were asked to tell a little about our Spark journey. Here is what I told her

'll just relay a little a bit about my own journey. Sparks has been an important part of my life from the beginning. I have been through a few major life challenges during this 10 years, including breast can... Sun, 18 Feb 2018 10:56:41 EST End of Fall 5% Challenge This was week 8 of the Fall Challenge. Started off great, but got busy and behind on exercise and blogging 2nd half of week. I hope we do more blogging in next challenge as it does bring me in closer contact with the Challenge Team and teammates.
Fri, 18 Nov 2016 23:52:04 EST Does Pulling my Garbage Can 1/3 of a mile count as Strength Training? I live on a rural road (called a "natural beauty road" in Michigan, aka dirt road). We share a long driveway to the road along with 5 or 6 neighbors. So I drag my garbage can and recycling can 1/3 of a mile behind me to get to the main road where the garbage truck picks up.
Today while doing my weekly chore, I wondered if this counts as strength training especially on the trip when the cans are full. I am also going up hill most of the way to the road.
So I think I will give mysel... Mon, 14 Nov 2016 23:50:42 EST Week 8 of 5% Challenge I'm doing a strict low carb diet this last week along with trying for at least 60 minutes of exercise per day this week to finish off the Fall Challenge. I'm not satisfied with my weight loss this challenge so I'm trying to refocus for this last week. Got my Atkins shakes stocked up. Hope to lose a few more pounds before Thanksgiving. Sun, 13 Nov 2016 22:25:14 EST 50 minutes a day Traditionally 30 minutes of exercise is recommended per day, but today I read a blog that says to lose weight, the American College of Sports Medicine now recommends 50 minutes per day. 30 minutes may maintain weight or result in small loss, but is not likely to cause much weight loss.

Here is a link to the article.

st=how_much_exercise_you_really_need_t
o_lose_weight

So I am going to be stepping up my ex... Sat, 12 Nov 2016 14:57:52 EST Monday...Tuesday Today was Tuesday but felt like Monday. Back to the regular weekly routine.
The day passed quickly, working on client tax work, handling some financial matters.
Had some "me time" talking to my sister. Her son is graduating from high school today.
Back in the routine, I was very good about my nutrition today. Kept my calories in range and healthy foods.
A new problem on the homefront today. Wasps! We found a few in the house. We are guessing they are in the attic and com... Tue, 27 May 2014 23:22:11 EST Weekend too short! The weekend was beautiful but went by too quickly! Had traditional barbeque along with salad and veggies. Also got to see oldest son this afternoon.
Didn't get too much done on To Do list this weekend though.
Back to normal routine tomorrow. Mon, 26 May 2014 23:10:31 EST Grad Parties Just a short blog today. I had a lazy day today attending grad parties and seeing some friends who I had not seen in awhile. Was a beautiful perfect day in Michigan, sunny, pleasant temperatures. Nice to have a day like this just visiting.
Nothing big planned tomorrow for Memorial Day. Hoping my SparkFriends are having a restful holiday.
Sun, 25 May 2014 22:41:44 EST Long time since I have blogged! It has been ages since I blogged and I am blogging this week for our Spring 5% Challenge.
Where to begin? I haven't been too successful on weight loss lately, in fact I have gained recently. A team member posted a blog about a Plateau Busting Challenge and I am going to look into that. Maybe that will help get me moving in the right direction again.
It's a beautiful day today, but I have a lot to do at home, both decluttering, cleaning and financial stuff as well as some client tax ... Sat, 24 May 2014 13:18:27 EST Getting Outside Loved this Biggest Loser Dazzling Diamonds challenge to get outside. So simple and easy just to get outside at least 5 minutes per day! But it made me conscious to make sure I got outside each day. I am so glad because the weather in Michigan in fall is just beautiful. The weather has been warmer than usual, although finally starting to cool off some. Most days have been sunny, although there were a few rainy days this week. But even in the drizzle, it was nice to be outside and smell the ou... Tue, 8 Oct 2013 22:40:16 EST Biggest Loser Fall Challenge Goals: Sleep and Strength Training This is my first time doing the Biggest Loser challenge. I have done 5% challenges many times, but decided I needed to change it up this fall (I will still be doing the 5% Fall Challenge with my long-time Cloverleaf team). I am hoping doing two challenges will lead to a very successful fall on my weight-loss journey.

As part of the BLC challenge, I am to write a short blog on my challenges for the fall.

I am going to focus on two main things. The first is sleep. I have n... Thu, 26 Sep 2013 03:23:45 EST 5% Challenge Daily Exercise Habit Just Jumping Jacks! My week started out well. I did the Jillian Michaels Beginner Video. Wow, it's supposed to be for beginners, but it challenged me! Circuit 1 starts out with 3 circuits of 30 Jumping Jacks, 10 squats, and 10 Push-ups. So total of 90 Jumping Jacks, 30 squats and 30 Push-ups. OK I remember in grade school how easy Jumping Jacks seemed. but not anymore. By the end of that circuit, I was tired! I will never take Jumping Jacks for granted again!
My strength training was hindered because I had ... Fri, 8 Mar 2013 20:22:24 EST 5% Challenge-New Habit The new habit I want to work on is daily exercise. This is the part of my health that I struggle with the most. I especially have trouble with this because I have a job that is sedentary in nature (taxes.) I go for many hours without getting up from my computer. At the end of the day I am exhausted and find it hard to get motivated to start exercise.
I need to overcome these obstacles and work daily exercise into my routine. Sat, 2 Mar 2013 22:09:10 EST My New Scale My new habit is related to a new scale I recently purchased. It is the EatSmart GetFit Body Digital Body Fat Scale made by HealthTools.
What is cool about this scale is it uses a low-level electronic impulse to measure your body fat percentage, body water percentage and muscle mass percentage as well as bone mass in pounds.

I thought this would be a great way to not just view the weight in pounds but also pay attention to how the weight is composed. Two people who weigh 160... Sat, 14 Jan 2012 23:22:58 EST Artprizing Today was a beautiful day in Grand Rapids. I never saw so many folks out in our fair city! Traffic jams galore. I blogged about this last year, but Artprize is an international art competition that takes place in GR. Artists from around the world compete for money prizes in all sorts of art mediums. This year there were 164 venues or locations displaying artwork and over 1500 entries. It's kind of like American Idol in that the viewers get to vote for the best artwork. So the artists hang o... Sat, 1 Oct 2011 22:44:09 EST Where did summer go? Cloverleafs (for the challenge) this is my first blog in eons, not since May. I love summer, yet I haven't done so many of the things that I planned, including meeting my weight loss goals. So where did my summer go?

1. Big project was helping younger daughter select a college (she wants to be a teacher), and helping her do lots of the things to get ready for moving to her new home in Chicago. Everything from doctor and eye appointments, college visits, orientations, finding an ... Fri, 9 Sep 2011 23:57:30 EST Busy Week Had one of those weeks that seemed to be busy nonstop. Seemed like I was on the run from various doctor appointments, to CPE training classes. Thanks to all the many favorable comments on my last blog about the good results on my mammogram. It's nice to have such great support

The weekend will be a welcome break in the action. I hope to get in some long walks and workouts this weekend. Also will be celebrating my daughter's birthday and attending a high school open house for a fri... Fri, 13 May 2011 23:02:23 EST Good news! Today I had my follow-up maammogram (had breast cancer surgery and treatment last year) and the results were cancer-free! I was worried about this but at least this year the news is good! Will keep working on my health and weight this year to keep that cancer away for good! 224 Wed, 11 May 2011 23:58:36 EST Mother's Day, Tulip Festival and an injured mom I had a very nice Mother's Day with all 4 of my kids. (No significant others today, they spent it with their own moms). It brought me back in time, since it has been a long time since I spent an entire day with all 4 of my own children, and only them. I know I won't have many more days like that, since my two 20 something kids have serious relationships. Their significant others are really great people, but family dynamics will be changing forever. Not for the worse, just different.
... Mon, 9 May 2011 01:15:31 EST Not the week I planned Well this was going to be a big week for exercise and I was going to blog everyday. Didn't happen. My daughter is diabetic and what for most of us would be normal case of stomach flu turned into severe dehydration and what is known as DKA (Diabetic Ketonacidosis). So we ended up in the ER Tuesday and she got triaged right into ICU. She (we!) spent 2 days in ICU before she was stabilized. She is back to normal and was back in school and working by the end of the week.

Needless to ... Fri, 25 Feb 2011 21:32:21 EST Commitment to the Challenge and Update First I want to thank all those who took the time to read and/or comment on my last biog about my dad. I have done as many of you said and just spent time with Dad, held him, gave him my love and treasuring this time with him. He ate some and walked a lot the last few times I have been there. But he is getting tired and weak.

The rest of this biog is my Commitment to the current 5% Winter Challenge. Here is what I will commit to:

1. I am officially committed to losing... Mon, 21 Feb 2011 21:32:45 EST Heartsick Hi SparkFriends.
I will try to keep up with the new challenge and blogging etc. I apologize if I do not keep up with the blogs this week. My dad is really sick and Hospice is now caring for him. He is not eating or taking fluids and the doctor says the prognosis is very bad. He has been losing weight at a rate of about a pound a day and has lost about 40 pounds in the last 8 weeks. (He didn't need to lose any weight). Needless to say I will be trying to spend as much time with him as ... Fri, 18 Feb 2011 03:20:30 EST My new Sparkname OK I finally did it! Changed my Spark User name. Those of you who know me, have known me as KERRWJPK. When I signed up for Sparks (almost 3 years ago) I never thought about the user name, and just picked the user name based on my email address (from our old AOL days). But that name was not too fun!

So my new name is Peppermint125. I wanted to use PeppermintPatty. That was my nickname back in high school and when Charlie Brown was big. I wasn't really like Peppermint Patty in the... Mon, 14 Feb 2011 02:41:38 EST Blizzard expected I know this is affecting many areas of the midwest. Michigan is expected to get hit with more than a foot of snow tonight and blizzard (windy) conditions will make it tough for the road crews. It is likely that my kids will have a snow day on Wednesday. My husband may be home also, as he drives to Lansing daily (about 60 miles away) and it may not be worth the effort. It could take him 2 hours or more each way (normally about an hour each way). So the next few days we will probably be houseb... Tue, 1 Feb 2011 12:41:19 EST Wedding motivation I have exciting news! I am not supposed to tell anyone yet but thought I would share with my SparkFriends. (You won't tell anyone). It's not official yet, but looks like my oldest daughter will be getting married next summer (2012). So I have huge motivation to look great as the mother of the bride! I would love to lose 50 pounds by then! I would like to break it down. The first goal is to lose 25 pounds in the next 6 months. This is very doable if I keep on track with the 5% challenges a... Wed, 26 Jan 2011 17:01:30 EST Short bursts of exercise I haven't posted a blog in several days. Work schedule is intense and taking most of my time. One more week of busy work deadlines coming up this week.
My goals of 60 minutes exercise per day while dealing with work is not happening. I didn't get much exercise last week. I am changing my plan this week to short bursts of exercise that I can do quickly. For example 5 minutes on the stairs, quick exercises at my desk (standup/sitdowns, leg abductions, etc), short 5-10 minute walks. At l... Sun, 10 Oct 2010 14:23:44 EST Making Progress with some Detours I feel i made progress this week and got my exercise in most days. However I did miss exercising two days. One good thing is that my sinus headache seems to have cleared up. Another good thing is that the weather was beautiful all week and I got outside to enjoy it a few days. The one day I went to the gym,, I almost wished I had chosen just to walk outside, everyday this week was gorgeous with sun and 70's.
I am renewing my commitment to exercise 60 minutes per day for next week. Thi... Fri, 1 Oct 2010 22:01:22 EST Errand Day Today was one of those days that I ran errands, post office, bank, picking up kids, paying bills, phone calls about miscellaneous matters. Didn't feel like I got much done, but I guess I got several little things off the to-do list. At least while I was running errands, it was a beautiful sunny day in the low 70's so it was nice to be out of the house.

Didn't get my exercise in today though, hopefully will be better on that tomorrow. And I can't shake a sinus headache that I seem t... Mon, 27 Sep 2010 23:28:48 EST New form of exercise Grand Rapids Artprize I have been getting some of my exercise enjoying the nice fall weather walking with thousands of other people in downtown Grand Rapids. We have an amazing event going on near where I live in Grand Rapids Michigan. It is called Artprize and it's in the second year of the event. It has been described as like American Idol but for artists. There is a $250,000 grand prize and over $400,000 in prizes for the top 10 artists. This year there are over 1000 artists who have entered the competition. ... Sun, 26 Sep 2010 22:40:35 EST Strategies for enjoying fall holidays and treats During the fall challenge we will be navigating some tasty holidays. And lots of fun treats in the fall season. So how to deal with these temptations?

First is fall when its getting cooler but we have some treats like apple cider and donuts, carmel apples and pumpkin pie.
1. Some of these can be good for us if we don't overdo it. Certainly apples are great in the fall and an excellent food.
2. Slice apples and dip in carmel sauce instead of having a carmel covered app... Sat, 25 Sep 2010 03:32:32 EST Sad day Hi Sparkfriends. This week I won't be checking in to Sparkpeople as much. My husband's father passed sooner than we expected Sunday. We were planning to go to North Carolina for the Labor Day holiday but now we will be going sooner for this sad occasion. Mon, 30 Aug 2010 00:53:06 EST Reflections on my 25 year old's birthday Today is a big day. My oldest son is 25. Here are some of my feelings about this event.

1. I'm not old enough to have a kid who is 25! (I clearly am, but I still want to think I'm at least 15 years younger than I am. When my son was a kid, I had him fooled for a while that I was only 29. I pulled it off for a while or was he just being nice?)

2. I am very proud of him. He is a great kid.

3. Where have the years gone? Seems like yesterday he was playing Legos... Fri, 27 Aug 2010 12:13:54 EST 16000 calories... what happened? Boy I thought what did I do? My nutrition tracker was showing 16,000 calories and I haven't had that much to eat today! Turns out I accidentally entered 40 cups of dried prunes instead of 40 grams! Never did this before. (By the way I actually like dried prunes, its one of my favorite snacks).
So its all fixed. Now off to a busy day.

(Note-Actual amount I ate 40 grams is only about 5 pieces dried prunes and is about 96 calories). Fri, 27 Aug 2010 10:06:18 EST Music Lyrics can motivate Lately I have been in the car with my teens a lot, and hear a lot of the current
music hits. Of course I hear that Billionaire song that plays most every hour,
and don't we all want to meet Oprah and the Queen? And Cooler than Me is
kind of catchy and is on a lot. (Reminds me of that song You're so Vain by Carly
Simon back in the 70's).

Surprisingly, I actually heard a few current Billboard hits that have lyrics that
might be motivating to Sparkpeo... Wed, 18 Aug 2010 01:41:04 EST In the Car I had one of those days where I spent most of it in the car, driving kids to and fro.
I took my daughter to her job, came back home for an hour. Then took my son to his driver's ed driving practice. No sooner did I get home then my daughter called to say pick her up at work . Too bad she didn't call me when I was nearby dropping off my son. So back in the car to pick her up. Then home for an hour. Then time to pick up my son. Then 2 hours later time to take him back to driver's ed (cl... Tue, 17 Aug 2010 21:52:09 EST Driver's Ed My 15 year old son will be starting Driver's Ed Monday. It will keep he and I busy
for most of the month of August. (Me to provide transportation, of course).
And this is just the beginning, as our state requires the driving candidate to have
at least 6 months experience with their parents or other responsible family members
before they can receive their license (as well as the written and driving test). So I will
be on the edge of my seat every time he says "Mom,... Sat, 7 Aug 2010 19:33:03 EST First blog I have never written a blog. I have been inspired by many other blogs, but today
is not a day I can write with inspiration. Instead I express sadness today. My
father-in-law found out he has 6 months or less to live from his doctor. We have
suspected as much as his heart is very weak and he keeps getting hospitalized.
He has dealt with heart issues for 35 years but has lived productively and happily
despite various heart surgeries. However, he is now at a point the... Thu, 5 Aug 2010 13:17:26 EST
