Last night my husband and I had an accident in which a car ran head on into the side of our car .The good news is that neither the occupants of the other car nor my husband had any injuries.
Since I was in the passenger seat when our right side was hit, my seat belt caused a crack in my clavicle (collar bone) which was very painful, but with good treatment in the ER and a good night's sleep in my easy chair last night, I'm felling better and controlling the pain with ibuprofen and acetam... Fri, 12 Jan 2018 17:58:56 EST Cracked or Bruised Sternum (Breastbone) I recently fell at home and hit my sternum on the arm of my easy chair. I didn't think I had hurt myself until the next morning when I woke up, I couldn't breathe deeply without pain. I went to my doctor and he said "You have either bruised or broken your sternum, but it doesn't make any difference which, because there's nothing we can do about either one. You just have to wait for it to heal." I have been taking medicine for the pain, but can't do any exercise except walking until it hea... Thu, 13 Jul 2017 11:27:20 EST A New Experience I Don't Want To Repeat I just got out of the hospital after six days on IV's to fight flu and pneumonia. I had the very best care available and I was so impressed in how much better hospital care now is than the last time I was in one, which was 30 years ago. The doctor and the nurses and other staff were so skilled and compassionate and the medicines were so effective that I felt 100% better when I left than when I went in. I learned a great deal about both flu and pneumonia which I didn't know.
I had had ... Thu, 9 Feb 2017 19:16:22 EST 66th anniversary Sixty-Six years ago my husband and I went to Mammoth Cave, KY on our honeymoon and this past Sunday and Monday, we went back to Mammoth Cave and stayed in a cabin just like the one we stayed in on our honeymoon. We went on two cave tours inside the cave on Monday.
The Historic Cave tour we went on in the morning was two hours of hiking and going up and down 500 steps. We covered two miles in the cave that way and saw lots of beauty. Then in the afternoon we went on the Frozen Niagara ... Tue, 16 Aug 2016 14:54:20 EST Injury Invites Creativity A little over a week ago, mu achilles tendon (the one behind my heel) suddenly ruptured (partially) and I ended up wearing a big heavy space boot to keep my foot and ankle immobile.
I'll have to wear it at least 3 more weeks, which means no more yoga, no more Jazzercise and no more fast walking until it heals and I can wear a regular shoe. I'm supposed to stay off my feet as much as possible, so my husband has encouraged me to do what I can to exercise without damaging that foot. We ha... Sat, 31 Oct 2015 16:15:21 EST Looking Forward To Spring And Summer When we turned our clocks ahead to start Daylight Saving Time for 2015, it woke me up to the fact that spring is almost here, meaning no more figure-hiding coats and jackets. I love to sew and just finished making myself a new dress to wear to my granddaughter's wedding in May and my grandson's wedding in June. I put it on my dress form, which my kids named "Mabel" many years ago. I've always wanted my measurements to come ... Tue, 10 Mar 2015 19:07:37 EST Going On A Trip We've been gone from home for two weeks and have changed time zones a lot. Going from KY to CA via OK and back involves moving the clock back and forth a lot, not to mention going back to standard time from dailylight saving time. Needless to say the trip messed up our usual very healthful routine. However, we still managed to get our required sleep by taking cat naps in the car or on the plane and trying to get to bed at a reasonable hour in whatever time zone we happened to be in. We al... Wed, 12 Nov 2014 16:08:49 EST Getting My Head On Straight Many years ago, I belonged to a weight-loss group in which the leader kept talking about "getting your head on straight." When a member of the group stuck to the prescribed diet for as long as a month, she would say, "You've finally got your head on straight." I lost the weight I wanted to lose at the time by sticking to a very restrictive diet and exercising regularly. So I thought I had my "head on straight." Evidently I didn't really have it as straight as I thought, because several ye... Wed, 24 Sep 2014 14:10:52 EST A Celebration Yesterday was our 64th wedding anniversary and we really celebrated. We very rarely eat out, but we went to a local restaurant and, because we have great memories of summers in Maine when my husband was teaching summer school at the University there, we decided to splurge on LOBSTER! The item on the menu was skewered lobster tails and scallops grilled and served on a bed of rice pilaf. We always split the meal, so our gracious waiter brought an extra plate for our entree and another extra ... Wed, 20 Aug 2014 15:19:57 EST Back Among the Living A week ago, I suddenly started running a fever, had a terrible headache, and ached in every joint.
I thought, "Uh Oh, I've got the flu." So I did what you're supposed to do for flu. I drank lots of liquids, took ibuprofen for the fever and headache and went to bed and slept for almost two days. When I finally felt like getting out of bed, I discovered I had lost my appetite, so lived on soup for the next two days. Finally, I got tired of feeling absolutely worthless and my husband to... Thu, 14 Aug 2014 15:40:38 EST I NEVER DREAMED I'D BE AN INSPIRATION Recently I was changing my shoes after a Jazzercise class and one of my fellow Jazzercisers
came up and said to me, "You are my inspiration. Would you mind if I took a picture of you?" I was overwhelmed and just gasped, "OK". I remember way back when I weighed 150 many years ago, I would not in my wildest dreams have imagined that anyone would want to use my chubby body as an example. Very gradually, by changing my lifestyle from "couch potato" to "Sparker" and Jazzerciser, I've gott... Sun, 29 Jun 2014 15:42:00 EST Families Are Precious I have 4 daughters, 6 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter and 1 great grandson on the way.
This past weekend we've had a joyous family reunion to which our 4 daughters from across the country ( California, Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky) and 3 granddaughters (California, Texas and Oklahoma) came to our retirement community here in Kentucky. We had 4 wonderful days together and the climax was a big family dinner here in our two-bedroom patio home. My husband made homemade noodles and coo... Wed, 25 Jun 2014 07:46:20 EST Chewing on "all cylinders" Now I've got a new artificial tooth now that feels just like the old "real" one and I'm back to enjoying the fresh fruits and vegetables I hesitated to eat when I had a 'hole' in my mouth. I just got back from a women's retreat with my church and was so pleased when I got home to find I haven't gained an ounce, even though I was eating at restaurants the whole weekend and had lots of tempting snacks set before me between meals. I remembered all I've learned on Sparkpeople.
I made myself l... Tue, 29 Apr 2014 17:52:22 EST Eating isn't as pleasurable as it was Recently I had to have a tooth pulled. For the first 24 hours I lived on liquids and soft foods. Then
I stayed away from raw vegetables and fruits, especially the ones with seeds or strings such as strawberries or celery. I didn't want to get things caught in that "Grand Canyon" in my mouth.
It will be a while before I get a replacement for that missing tooth, so I'm just chewing on one side of my mouth and I'm finding it takes me much longer to eat a meal and I'm enjoying it les... Wed, 2 Apr 2014 15:04:12 EST I've Become an Exercise Junkie 334 My husband says if I ever drank an alcoholic drink, I'd become addicted, so I don't drink. But I have become addicted to exercise since I've discovered how good it makes me feel and I really
miss it when circumstances, like bad weather prevent me from getting my usual daily walk or snow causes Jazzercise to be cancelled. So, today was a beautiful day, so I took full advantage of it. I started the day with 30 minutes of yoga, then 60 minutes of Jazzercise, then my husban... Mon, 20 Jan 2014 15:45:28 EST Getting Better I've been fighting bronchitis and asthma for about 3 weeks now, thinking I could just get over it by keeping up my healthy diet, getting my exercise and using cough medicine and cough drops.
However, my husband finally convinced me to go to the doctor, who gave me a shot and prescribed a powerful oral medicine and a nebulizer to help me breathe better. I've been faithfully taking the medicine since Monday and today I just stayed in bed and slept all morning and didn't do any exercise, e... Fri, 20 Dec 2013 18:10:54 EST You Get Out Of It What You Put In I've recommended Sparkpeople to friends and relatives ever since I was introduced to this wonderful website by my daughter. It has puzzled me that many have not even bothered to investigate it and some have said they "tried it and didn't like it". I've been trying to figure out why I've been so successful in losing what I wanted to and gaining so much information and
inspiration that I've maintained my goal weight for so long. It finally dawned on me that you get out of Sparkpeople wh... Mon, 29 Jul 2013 16:05:36 EST Six Years With Sparkpeople I reached my goal six years ago and can hardly believe I've stayed slim, fit and healthy this long and haven't gone back to the yo-yo- dieting I did for most of my previous years. Once I found Sparkpeople and faithfully logged everything I ate and how much exercise and sleep I got, it was easy to see where I needed to make some changes. The changes have now become a way of life and I feel better now at the age of 82 than I did when I was a teenager. I've learned so much in these 6 years wi... Fri, 26 Apr 2013 14:33:51 EST Maintenance is a Balancing Act In the past week, I've finally managed to get off the 1 lb. over my goal which hung on after I had lost 3 lbs. I had put on a few weeks ago. As I tried to find out why this pesky little one pound would not go, I realized that my calories in and calories out were not in balance. Usually I keep my calorie intake down in the 1200-1500 range and do yoga, Jazzercise, walking and Chair Dancing to use up the calories. However, the weather has cut both my walking and my Jazzercise back. Example: ... Fri, 15 Feb 2013 14:31:00 EST Mission Accomplished Last Monday I challenged myself to get off the 5 lbs I gained during the week I was away from home because of a death in the family. Today, a week later, I'm thankful that, with much prayer and the help of the "cabbage soup cleansing diet"and my usual Jazzercise and yoga and walking, I'm back at my goal weight . HALLELUJAH! Mon, 10 Dec 2012 21:29:00 EST Today is the beginning again Today is Monday, the day I always "started my diet" in the past. Since I've been maintaining with Sparkpeople for 5 1/2 years now I don't "diet" any more. I just keep track of calories and exercise on Sparkpeople and try to keep up a healthy lifestyle. However, the last week has been a challenge for me and I've ended up by gaining 5 lbs in a week. I know exactly how I did it. Last Monday, my husband and I took a quick trip to Georgia because of the sudden death of his sister. You know h... Mon, 3 Dec 2012 13:13:00 EST New Perspective In my five years of maintaining my weight loss, I've gradually gained a new perspective, not just about a healthy lifestyle, but also about what's important and what isn't. Over the years, before I found Sparkpeople, I used to think that the only way to lose weight was to starve myself and that exercise wasn't very important. I lost weight that way over and over. but always gained it back when I quit starving myself. Now, I've discovered that the important equation is calories in must equa... Sun, 25 Nov 2012 14:12:47 EST Do You Live to Eat or Eat to Live? My grandmother, a little lady I looked up to, used to say, "Some people live to eat. I don't. I eat to live." As a little girl, I didn't understand what she was saying. Now that I've lived even longer than she did, I agree with her. I'll admit that there have been times in my life I could have been counted in the first group: those who live to eat. I would start looking forward to the next meal
with much longing and anticipation and seemed to be hungry all the time. I even agreed w... Sun, 7 Oct 2012 14:51:11 EST Pride Goeth Before A Fall I've been proud of myself for walking briskly 15 min. every day, doing 1/2 hour of yoga each morning and Jazzercising 3 days a week for one hour each day. However, I'm learning a little more humility, because as I started my walk on Monday, I accidentally tripped as I stepped out the front door and fell. I landed on the palms of both hands and on one knee. I then got up and continued my walk and later went to Jazzercise class. I didn't realize till I got home from Jazzercise that I had s... Wed, 8 Aug 2012 13:35:43 EST Double Whammy This week I did back to back Jazzercise classes, one hour from 8:15-9:15 and another hour from 9:30-10:30. By getting in two classes in one day, I earned a new pretty coral-colored tank top to keep me cool this summer or as the poster at the Jazzercise center said "earn the right to bare arms." I learned some new things, too: e.g(1) the second class was easier than the first class because I was already warmed up and "loose as a goose," (2) my metabolism was really revved up and my energy ... Sat, 28 Jul 2012 09:26:30 EST Travel is Broadening The pictures I recently added were taken on a trip my husband and I took to Texas, Oklahoma, and California to see two granddaughters graduate from college and a great granddaughter dedicated at her parents' church. We were gone two weeks and I didn't get my usual amount of exercise (Jazzercise 3 days a week and walking every day.) My daughters and granddaughter are good cooks and I enjoyed the meals they prepared as well as eating in restaurants more than usual. It shouldn't have been a ... Sat, 9 Jun 2012 15:49:53 EST Proud Great grandparents: Peggy, Bob and Five month old Clair Claire's broken leg did not dampen her great spirit Thu, 31 May 2012 08:27:56 EST Four generations on mother's day Mother's Day 2012 was special as I spent it with my daughter, granddaughter and five month old great granddaughter who had a broken leg. Thu, 31 May 2012 08:24:34 EST My Debut As a Fashion Model

I live in a Senior Living Community and we are trying to raise money for a new van. One of our residents came up with the idea of a fashion show. A boutique in a nearby town supplied the fashions and 13 of us volunteered to be models. I had lost 10 pounds on Sparkpeople almost 5 years ago and have continued to log in my food and exercise each day on maintenance, so I felt confident enough in my slimmer self to vol... Fri, 30 Mar 2012 19:48:32 EST A Great Blessing Today I got to hold my first great-granddaughter, named after me and born Dec. 1. What an amazing experience! She is so beautiful with lots of black hair and so precious in my arms.
I have to leave to go back home tomorrow, but I'll always remember this once in a lifetime experience. Thanks be to God! Mon, 5 Dec 2011 21:15:57 EST Thanksgiving Enjoying Thanksgiving Day with two daughters, granddaughter and spouses. I'm very proud of myself for sticking to smal portions and taking a brisk walk with long-legged granddaughter and husband after Thnksgiving Dinner and hope to make it through the holidays maintaining at my goal weight as I have been for the past 4 years. I've got so much to be thankful for! Thu, 24 Nov 2011 21:40:07 EST Starting a New Life My husband and I have just moved from the house we built and lived in for 22 years to a
"Senior Living Village" and are starting a new life here among other people who are in their senior years as we are (he's 83 and I'm 80). We felt it was time. We already feel at home here because our neighbors are so friendly and helpful . I've already been to my first Jazzercise class at a center near here and enjoyed finding new friends there. We've definitely downsized from 3 bedrooms and 3 b... Mon, 3 Oct 2011 15:03:13 EST Keep Your Eyes on the Prize As we continue our journey along the path toward good health, fit bodies and minds and a more active life, staying focused on where we're heading keeps us from wandering too far away from the "straight and narrow." I recently had occasion to temporarily let unusual circumstances take my attention away from the importance of getting my exercise each day and watching my portions of food. As a result, I gained 5 lbs in a week! What a shock when I got on the scales for my weekly weigh-in. In ... Wed, 7 Sep 2011 17:25:08 EST What's Your Favorite Day of the Week? You've heard the song, "Rainy Days and Mondays Get Me Down", but actually Monday has always been my favorite day of the week. Back before I found Sparkpeople, I would promise myself, "Monday morning, I'll start on a diet." Then I'd spend the weekend eating everything in sight getting ready to deprive myself on Monday. I always thought of Monday as a good day to start fresh and change some bad habits. However, now that I've learned so much about living a healthy lifestyle from Sparkpeople,... Wed, 29 Jun 2011 14:36:29 EST What a Difference Losing Just Ten Pounds Made I lost the ten pounds I'd been battling for years back in 2007 and have been logging in to Sparkpeople ever since to be sure I stay on track with my new healthy lifestyle. I've made some permanent changes that have enabled me to stay at goal for over 4 years, such as weighing and measuring portions, eating smaller portions, drinking 8 glasses of liquid daily, exercising regularly and getting 8 hours of sleep every night. Recently I realized the changes this has made in my body, so gradually... Mon, 13 Jun 2011 15:04:44 EST LISTEN TO YOUR BODY One thing I've learned since I've been living the Sparkpeople way is to listen to what my body is telling me. I used to pay little attention to what it was saying about how much I needed to eat or when it really wanted to move. I would eat something when what my body really needed was more rest. I would spend all day sitting, when what my body was trying to tell me was it needed to move.

Now I make sure I get 8 hrs of sleep a night and sometimes take a nap in the afternoon, so I... Tue, 19 Apr 2011 19:10:51 EST PACKING TO MOVE IS GOOD EXERCISE Today my husband and I were packing dishes in preparation for moving and I began to think of how much exercise we were getting. We were lifting stacks of dishes and bending over to put them in boxes. We were then carrying the boxes down the stairs to the basement to be loaded into the truck. We were walking from room to room, collecting dishes to pack and from the house to the garbage cans to throw away excess paper and trash. I wore my pedometer all day and at the end of the day had wal... Sat, 16 Apr 2011 17:58:35 EST 80 Years Young and Celebrating Life Having just celebrated my 80th birthday (Mar. l7, 2011), I feel compelled to distill the vast wisdom I've accumulated into a few terse sentences:
(1) You're never too old to spend the time and effort it takes to look your best.
(2) Enjoy the gift of each day, whatever the weather or your circumstances.
(3) Never hesitate to ask for help when you really need it, but do what you can for yourself.
(4) Express appreciation for the kindness of strangers and offer some of it t... Tue, 22 Mar 2011 21:07:07 EST FASTING For several years, my husband and I have been using Wednesday as a fast day. We drink only liquids, such as hot cocoa, tomato soup, milk, water, etc. and it has taught us that we don't need as much food as most of us Americans are eating every day. We take the money we would have spent on food and donate it to programs that feed really hungry people in this country and around the world. Our bodies have adjusted to this schedule so well that we don't even get hungry on Wednesday. It's amaz... Wed, 16 Feb 2011 14:51:52 EST MY fAVORITE FITNESS TOOL: MY PEDOMETER My Husband got me a pedometer last year and I started wearing it when I took my 30 min. walk each day. I was surprised at how many steps I took in just 30 min. and decided to make 10,000 steps a day my goal. Even when I wore the pedometer all day around the house, I could only get to 10,000 steps on days when I Jazzercised, walked, went shopping, vacuumed and hung laundry outside. Wearing my pedometer has changed my whole attitude about walking. Now I park farther away from the store so I... Fri, 28 Jan 2011 16:15:06 EST LET IT SNOW WE DON'T USUALLY HAVE MUCH SNOW IN EAST TENNESSEE, BUT THIS YEAR WE'VE HAD SOME BEAUTIFUL SNOWS THAT CLING TO EVERY BRANCH OF THE TREES AND MAKE OUR WOODS LOOK LIKE FAIRYLAND. WE'VE GOT A WOOD-BURNING FIREPLACE AND IT'S SO CALMING AND SOOTHING TO SIT AND WATCH THE RED, BURNING COALS THAT PUT OUT SUCH GREAT WARMTH. IT'S SUPPOSED TO SNOW 1-3" TONIGHT. THAT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE MUCH TO MANY WHO LIVE NORTH OF US, BUT WE'LL ENJOY WATCHING IT FALL AND STAY INSIDE WITH A CUP OF HOT COCOA. WE'VE L... Fri, 7 Jan 2011 16:02:41 EST HAPPY NEW LIFE! I love new beginnings. Went to church this morning and the whole service was about the new year being a time of new beginnings and new life. "Behold the old has passed away and I make everything new." I felt like it was meant just for me because this year will bring a whole new way of life for me. I've resolved to walk EVERY DAY instead of just on the days I don't Jazzercise.
I'll also do my yoga strength training EVERY DAY BEFORE BREAKFAST. 2011 brings several changes, because in Ma... Sun, 2 Jan 2011 18:02:39 EST Hallelujah When I went to my doctor last Wednesday, he put me on tetracycline twice a day for ten days.
By Saturday, I had quit coughing and now feel like a new person. My x-ray showed I had no pneumonia and just a slight over-expansion of the lungs, possibly due to asthma. I'm now using an inhaler for that and plan to get back to my 2 mi. walk every other day. Thanks so much for your encouragement and prayers for my recovery. God is good! Tue, 21 Dec 2010 09:31:26 EST 2 lb loss weighed on my home scale and couldn't believe my eyes when i had lost 2 lbs. first time i've gone below goal. Thu, 16 Dec 2010 20:20:26 EST Trying to Get Back to Normal Went back to my doctor hoping I'd be over this cough by now, but disappointed to find I'm not well yet. I did go to Jazzercise , feeling great and enjoying every minute, but toward the end of the hour started coughing and continued all through my doctor's appointment, so had to go get a chest x-ray to see if I have pneumonia. The big surprise was when I got on the doctor's scale and found that according to his scale, I have lost two pounds since last Friday. I'll do my weekly weigh-in on m... Wed, 15 Dec 2010 17:59:10 EST Roadblock on the Fitness Road My fitness routine has been pretty standard for the last 3 years: 30 min. yoga every morning, 1 hr. Jazzercise 3 days a week, walking 2 mi. 3 days a week. So far it's enabled me to stay at my goal as long as I stick to logging in my food and exercise every day on Sparkpeople and staying within my calorie range consistently. However, I've run into a roadblock on my fitness routine.
I've had bronchitis and asthma for several weeks now and have been unable to get out in the col d weather ... Sat, 11 Dec 2010 17:38:19 EST My Best Buddy My husband is my best friend and buddy. He helps me in so many ways, I can hardly count them but I'll try: (1) He finds low calorie, low-fat recipes and helps me make them.
(2) He encourages me to keep up my exercise and drives me to Jazzercise.
(3) He goes on walks with me in the neighborhood or at the mall.
(4) He gives me gifts that are associated with exercise, like yoga pants.
(5) When w... Tue, 30 Nov 2010 15:31:31 EST October's Bright Blue Weather Today's a gorgeous day in East Tennessee. The sky's a brilliant blue, the sun's shining bright,
it's 50 degrees and the trees are turning color. The beauty of the day inspired me to add 10 minutes to my usual 30 min. walk. My longer route brought me a pleasant encounter with neighbors I hadn't seen recently and they offered me home-grown tomatoes from their garden.
Isn't it wonderful how small changes in a healthy habit can bring great benefits? Just adding 10 minutes to my walk... Tue, 5 Oct 2010 12:31:55 EST I'm No Longer Afraid of a Taste During my long lifetime I've been on many "diets".
