Unfortunately there was too much wind but the sun was out and temps were perfect. I did my walk in the woods with Molly, church, then a stroll to Smitty's. We did not win any meat on the raffle but we did help Sue start celebrating her birthday. My last blog was on 29 Dec - two days before the lousy news from my mammogram. Now we are past surgery and looking forward to a great future. Mon, 31 Mar 2014 10:55:32 EST Winter http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5574451 Yesterday was the perfect winter day. Lots of sunshine and pretty warm temperature for WI. My husband & I went snowshoeing with friends. It was beautiful. And of course Molly had a great time running all over the woods and hills. Today is more a normal winter day, chilly and windy with light snow. The weather yesterday gave us all a break from winter. Sun, 29 Dec 2013 09:47:18 EST Ready for the day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5521181 It's 8:55 a.m. and I've had breakfast, Skyped with my sister, had my walk, put supper in the crock pot and now it's time to scrub the floor. Boy I'm busy. It is an overcast fall day with 'frost on the pumpkin'. A good day for a drive and a little shopping. I love retirement. Wed, 23 Oct 2013 09:57:20 EST Rainy Sunday in Nebraska http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5505856 Not much to do today. No television in the cabin and now it is raining. Thank goodness for WI FI and all my electronic gadgets. How did we ever get along with out them? Years ago when I wanted my first computer, my husband said, "what are your going to do" keep recipes on it?" Wow, who knew the extent of recipes available thru SparkPeople and the web. I still have my hard copy cookbooks, but hardly go there at all. My favorite is a 1953 Good Housekeeping that is falling about. It came from my... Sun, 6 Oct 2013 10:05:11 EST I love my crock pot http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5481492 With the summer heat, I hate cooking. It only makes this kitchen hotter. I've used my crock pot the last three days. I even make my applesauce in the crock pot. It's amazing how well everything turns out. Tonight we will have spare ribs, yummy. Tomorrow I'd better figure out a soup to make. I had hoped to get some kale out of my garden this year but it has been just too dry for it to grow. It sure is pretty and maybe there is enough out there to pick and put in the crock. I wonder how it woul... Tue, 10 Sep 2013 10:05:33 EST August is well on the way http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5446627 Today is a great day, weather-wise and everything. Isn't it amazing how much the weather affects us, our moods and our attitudes. Remember only you can keep them positive. Tue, 6 Aug 2013 15:26:16 EST Mid July http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5425125 And halfway thru the summer. It is glorious today - a little too hot for my liking but the breeze this morning is refreshing. Molly and I are in from our walk in the woods where we battled the bugs valiantly. Now she is napping and I am "Sparking". Unfortunately I am up a few pounds and it is time to get back in gear. The archery tournaments are almost done so that will get me back off the bratwurst track. Take heart all you Sparkers and enjoy some great summer produce. Thu, 18 Jul 2013 09:51:47 EST July is here http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5408277 Everyone has been waiting so long for summer to arrive and now we are into July. Things seem to happen when you aren't looking. I've not been very faithful about recording and have had trouble getting my walking in. Needless to say I'm up 4 pounds. It is definitely time to get serious. Raisin bran for breakfast, push the fruits and try to increase the veggies. This is all very serious work. Tue, 2 Jul 2013 08:21:38 EST Inspirational Speakers http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5340433 This past weekend I listened to motivational speaker Rolf Jacobson at an assembly in LaCrosse. What an excellent speaker. He told us that our attitude is 'ours' and it is up to us to choose positive. Even if you are having a bad day, you can make someone else's day. As an example if you are out to breakfast you can over-tip your waitress, that can bring a smile to her face. And we all feel better when someone smiles. I try to always put a smile on my face when I answer the phone - did you kno... Tue, 30 Apr 2013 08:33:36 EST Back to Blogging http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5339396 And getting more serious about my nutrition and exercise. It seems that during winter it is a hard to maintain both the attitude and the actions of controlling nutrition and exercise. As the winter drags on it takes more effort to actually pay attention to one's self. With the spring comes fresh ideas and it's easier to pay attention to what you are doing both physically and what's going in to your mouth. Maybe now I'll even find fresh ideas for blogging.
381 Mon, 29 Apr 2013 11:47:27 EST Sunshine http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5333921 Today is a glorious spring day. After several days of gloom we are seeing blue skies and sunshine. You could see the grass turning green yesterday but it is really popping out today. It's amazing how a little sunshine can pick up everyone's spirits. I'd say this might silence some of the grumbling but I know what comes next. Now every one will be whining about wanting warmer temperatures. It's too bad that human nature seems to slide towards the grumbling rather than the rejoicing. I know you... Wed, 24 Apr 2013 09:41:33 EST Quiet time http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5313478 Hubby didn't sleep well last night so he's trying to catnap on the couch. Only problem is that this is a tiny house and it's tough not to make noise. Gives me a chance to catch up on my Sparkpeople 'work'. And an opportunity to spend a little more time strolling around outside. Sleep deprivation seems to be more pronounced as you age. How I envy kids and their nap times. Sat, 6 Apr 2013 10:03:13 EST Home Sweet Home http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5311081 Wow - forgot how to use this are and just wiped out my blog. Oh well. Here it goes again.
It is great to be home after my fun-filled two weeks in Atlanta. Visiting with Muddy was good. We did lots of talking and looking and sorting pictures and going thru some of Mom's stuff. It's hard to believe she has been gone going on 6 years. The tears still flow and I don't see time easing the pain. Thu, 4 Apr 2013 08:15:17 EST Soups to warm the heart http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5282467 This morning my husband asked for more soup. I made a great ham & vegetable soup using a vegetable stock last week. Today I'm making a chicken noodle with carrots with just seasoning and no stock - it could be to bland. Next week it will be ham and navy bean - hubby says I make the best. I love different soups and it certainly is one of the best ways to bring some veggies in to the mix. Mon, 11 Mar 2013 11:58:08 EST Friday and the knee is better http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5278701 Had to take it easy this week, recliner time on Monday and Tuesday. Up and about a little more on Wednesday and finally able to get out on the snowshoes yesterday and today. Molly was going crazy with the inactivity. Today I need to do my chair exercises, or something to build up the strength in my knees. I hate that they fill with fluid so easily and make it painful to walk. Fri, 8 Mar 2013 10:37:20 EST Knee pain http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5272346 Aging is a challenge. Mine centers around my knees. I've had surgery on one knee, filaments from arthritic changes. So now that my right knee has been scraped it is time for my left knee to act up. Yesterday we walked around in the snow and my left knee got 'tight'. Today it is full of fluid. I have taken Aleve and iced it down once already this morning. Today will be a recliner day with ice off and on. Thank goodness I've dropped some weight, at least I feel that should help. I'm trying to ... Mon, 4 Mar 2013 09:06:45 EST Tuesday morning coming down http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5264483 The weather today is pretty good. My stroll in the woods with Molly got me heated up and ready for the day. I missed Monday this week because I was driving home from Cleveland. It was a great day for a drive. The only challenge between here and there is Chicago. It does take forever to get around the windy city. It was cold in Cleveland but we still walked all over downtown and toured the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Sunday. It seemed the only other place open was the Horseshoe Casino. Gamblin... Tue, 26 Feb 2013 09:34:18 EST How the weather affects us http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5246047 I love winter but today is not my favorite kind of winter day. The wind is howling and after all the rain yesterday my white fluffy snow is pretty hard packed and icy. To top it all off, my knee is full of fluid so my exercise is going to be limited. I need to shoot for two hours of chair exercises followed by some icing of the knee. Tomorrow looks like a gorgeous day with sunshine, "I love ya' tomorrow, your'e only a day away. Mon, 11 Feb 2013 08:01:34 EST I love Sundays http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5236011 They just seem to be a nicer day. Every one seems to be less in a hurry. I know lots of people have to work so the day is no different for them but I get to relax. I go to church most Sundays and enjoy the spiritual balm that comes from the singing and readings and joint fellowship. And I'm really glad very few people where 'tons' of perfume like the old days. Sun, 3 Feb 2013 17:34:27 EST Egg Substitute http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5234172 I have been trying to use egg substitute rather than good old plain eggs. So far I have liked them for scrambling and for using in recipes. Why add all that cholesterol if you don't have to. Even chocolate chip cookies taste fine. Ok, maybe cookies don't really add a lot nutritionally but it sure is a nice addition to the food I eat. This morning I made a burrito with a little mozzarella cheese and guacamole and my egg beaters cooked up in the microwave. Tastes just fine and is easy and rathe... Sat, 2 Feb 2013 08:28:43 EST Cholesterol-ly challenged http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5223998 I love all the foods that are 'bad' for me or bad for my cholesterol levels. Of course it's difficult to understand that all that good protein comes wrapped up in something bad. Needless to say as I lessen my intake of cholesterol laden foods I am also lessening my intake of much needed protein. This balancing act of eating the right stuff is very time consuming and can be very confusing. The interesting thing is that at my last check up, both my good & bad cholesterol went up and my triglyc... Sat, 26 Jan 2013 07:48:21 EST Sunshine on my window makes me happy http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5212908 I don't think any one can be suffering from SAD this January - we have had an awful lot of sunshiny days. There was a fresh blanket of snow on the yard this morning and it is just sparkling in the sunshine. Yes, I do enjoy winter. I'm fortunate to not get the blues because of the cold weather. One reason is that I get out in to the woods and walk, peaceful and calming. And I don't walk alone, Molly runs and races and prances and chases, sniffing at downed trees and always on the look out for ... Fri, 18 Jan 2013 11:25:57 EST The thaw continues http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5202423 Had plenty of rain this morning which has wiped out our snow and revealed green grass. And there are even a lot of little flying insects appearing in the woods. Guess they must be what we used to call snow fleas, very strange. My walk in the woods was a little tough, it's hard to keep a smooth gait when you feet keep slipping but at least I didn't fall down. Fri, 11 Jan 2013 16:19:21 EST January Thaw http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5197283 I was really enjoying my days on snowshoes. This morning was probably the last 'walk' in the snow covered woods. This afternoon it is already settling and I wore boots rather than my shoes. I have hopes this thaw won't wipe out the snow completely but there isn't much in the forecast that supports my hopes. The woods will be muddy and I'll be walking on the road again - rats. I guess we just have to make do with what we have. Tue, 8 Jan 2013 16:31:54 EST Feeling better http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5187909 Whew yesterday was a bit of a waste of a day. I had the chills and was coming down with a cold or suffering from sinus problems. I doctored with Contac and LOTS of fluids. Today I do feel better and now the hubby feels bad. And although I plan to still take it easy today. I've already accomplished so much more than yesterday. A stroll thru the woods and cornfield on snowshoes and a meal in the crock pot. Thu, 3 Jan 2013 10:29:27 EST 2012 is done http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5181974 It is amazing that the year 2012 is now (well almost) history. When I look at my Facebook timeline I think of all the things I did not record in that crazy social media. Now I have a Smart Phone that makes it easy to record every where I go. Whoa!
It's amazing how far the technology has come and dazzles me with thoughts of how far it can go. Today I think it will be good to just relax and now think any further ahead than tomorrow. Mon, 31 Dec 2012 10:15:04 EST Holiday Sadness http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5173556 This holiday season we are suffering thru with two more family losses. The first Christmas 'without' my Mother-In-Law and my sister. It definitely will not be our normal Christmas so my husband has decided we would forgo our normal rituals - after all we did most of them for the women we have now lost. I"ve read a pamphlet on dealing with loss at during the holidays and the one statement that I like says, "Adapt cherished traditions." I guess our new tradition is to travel less, eat less, & s... Sat, 22 Dec 2012 09:19:40 EST Breakfast is done http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5171806 After eating a little too much yesterday, I'm hoping to stay below my calorie level today. I am having a difficult time watching what I eat now that my husband is home every day with me. He likes to eat big and loves to snack & seems a little 'angry' that I'm trying and had been succeeding at watching what I ate. Somehow I need to get him on board with controlling what we eat and getting in that exercise. Thu, 20 Dec 2012 08:12:31 EST Snow heading our way http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5171140 I love the snow and I'm retired so I'm pretty excited about the big snow heading our way. I usually walk in the woods and once the snow arrives I plan to get out there and enjoy it on my snowshoes. My dog follows behind me in the deep snow until I can break the path for her. I know many of you dread the coming storm and I remember those working days when driving was frightening. Just remember to go slow and think of ways to get out into it to enjoy it. Wed, 19 Dec 2012 13:40:49 EST Weight stalemate http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5170033 I must have reached my weight plateau. Now I need to figure out what to do to kick start the loss of a couple more pounds. I'm so close to my goal and it is wonderful. Thank you SparkPeople Tue, 18 Dec 2012 10:39:04 EST Home Sweet Home http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5166640 I had a wonderful vacation to North Carolina. The train trip to Washington D.C. was very relaxing, although it was tough to sleep in those cramped positions. The drive from DC to NC was very nice. Thank the Lord that we have returned home safe and sound with all our adventures. Fri, 14 Dec 2012 16:17:52 EST 34th Anniversary http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5152496 It's amazing to think that we have been married for 34 years and we still like each other. I'd say good fortune has smiled on us. Lobster dinner to celebrate with tonight. Sat, 1 Dec 2012 10:35:52 EST The day in the middle http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5150464 Successful birthday now on to the Anniversary. We've made it thru one evening out, and even thru processing the venison. Today is jerky day and a free evening. Tomorrow night we celebrate with another birthday dinner, then Saturday is anniversary dinner. Can only hope the weight doesn't go up too much. Monday will be time to get serious. Thu, 29 Nov 2012 10:47:59 EST Sunshine today http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5148086 Yesterday was windy and cold. Today is cold but the sun is shining and the wind is non-existent. Guess Molly & I had better get outside for our walk but BRR I feel like snuggling inside. Tue, 27 Nov 2012 08:35:25 EST Time for Tom and Jerry's http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5133816 The radio just told me that but I don't think that is true until December. Maybe this year I'll start in November better see if Smitty's has any ready yet. Tue, 13 Nov 2012 09:53:41 EST October http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5116577 What a great month. Starting with a visit with Mikin on her birthday to a trip to Tucson AZ. Halloween should be interesting in the south. Probably not quite as interesting as the one spent in Thailand. I was just thinking of all the different places I've spent Halloween. I will be missing Smitty's party on Wednesday but I'm sure I'll have fun with Cousin Dan. We never have any trick or treater's here. I will miss all those Halloweens I spent in Stoughton with Kris' family. Oh to have those d... Mon, 29 Oct 2012 10:08:23 EST What a week http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5113467 I hate getting a fall cold. It just seems difficult to get anything done. Yesterday we had a very gray day and after my walk in the woods, I relaxed and watched movies. Today I won't be turning on the television. I look around the house and see a lot of chores that need to be done so I can have a free weekend. I'm doing Zicam and Zinc - any other suggestions for beating the cold? Fri, 26 Oct 2012 09:51:32 EST A great weekend http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5108177 Had visitors on Friday and went out to Smitty's for their Fish Fry. Tried the blackened Tuna which was very tasty. Then Saturday I attended a Tae Kwondo Competition, very cool. It almost made me want to sign up for a class but when I tried to convince my husband we could both sign up, he was not really positive. Think I'll check in to the availability and cost any way. i LOVE walking in the woods but think it is time to increase my activity level. Tae Kwondo, Tai Chi, Taibo - I've need to fin... Mon, 22 Oct 2012 09:45:56 EST What a memory http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5101042 Had a great blog entry come to mind when I was out walking in the woods. Now of course I can't remember it. I'd better start taking some of those memory vitamins, if only I'd remember to buy them when I was at Walgreens. Think I'd better get the flu shot too. It is just to easy to spend money.

Wow - got my flu shot on Thursday and it was FREE. I guess I should say it was covered by insurance. :-) Tue, 16 Oct 2012 09:19:48 EST Friday Friday Friday! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5096168 Sunshiny day is on the way. I told my husband that it's all about ME. After working all those years and always having to be 'available' for employee needs, it's nice to be here for me. Being able to concentrate on my needs, what eat, work-outs, even housecleaning, it's still for me. It is a great feeling. Fri, 12 Oct 2012 08:46:38 EST Blogging works today http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5093785 Great the window opened so I can add a blog. Today is gorgeous and I hope to get out there and get some exercise from something other than cleaning. Well, I probably should clean too. Today I made a great spread from avacado, onion and tomato - just a little shift in the recipe since I added ginger, garlic pepper and parsley rather than the called for cilantro and a few other things I didn't have. Tasted great. Wed, 10 Oct 2012 09:57:17 EST Flu Cold Strikes again http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5087654 Now my sweetie is home sick, reclining and watching tv. He tried to sleep in but that didn't work well so now he's surfing the channels hoping to find something to watch. Sounds like "Cagney and Lacey" is what he has settled for. A show he always called "Gag me & Lacey", guess he must really be sick. Fri, 5 Oct 2012 09:50:21 EST Blogging http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5086496 This is made even more difficult because my "Add a Blog Entry" does not always work. Today I had to got out of the page several times and finally when I clicked on the link it actually opened the entry box. Other than having blogging challenges my day is going great. Hope yours is too. Thu, 4 Oct 2012 11:22:44 EST Time Flies http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5083494 It's true. I've always heard 'older' people say that time flies faster as you get older. Well, now I'm one of those 'older' people and yes, it is true. I need to start setting goals and checking them off as I reach them. Today I plan to clean the house, wash the dog, go grocery shopping and so far all I've done is Spark. But that's ok because walking the dog in the woods, tracking my nutrition and exercise and doing the Spark Coaching were also on my to-do list and they are DONE! Tue, 2 Oct 2012 09:13:21 EST Spark Points http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5082975 Wow, I've been doing the Spark Coaching today and noticed at one point that I had 57 points. When I went back in to Spark Coaching it showed that I had earned 569 points in one day. I don't believe that is even possible. My Spark Points sure don't show that I earned that many. Guess I'll take them and say thank you. Mon, 1 Oct 2012 21:53:00 EST Rodeo http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5080075 Tonight I got to go to a professional rodeo show right in Tomah. The production was out of Texas but many of the riders were Wisconsinites. It was a nice clear evening and the rodeo was well-done. They did all the events you see at the big rodeo shows but there weren't an over-abundance of riders. We cheered, and clapped and oohed & ahed. It was a very nice evening. Sun, 30 Sep 2012 00:20:39 EST Happy Weekend http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5070264 Today started out rainy but Molly & I still got a short walk in. We ven kicked up a deer in the woods - didn't mean to startle her but it happens. Molly is such a good girl, she just looks at the deer as it runs off. The rain may have stopped but now the wind is really knocking the leaves off the trees. I guess fall is really here. Sat, 22 Sep 2012 11:22:22 EST My dog is such a baby http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5068870 Today we were out walking in the woods and Molly started limping. I asked her what was wrong and she held her left paw up so I could see the acorn shell that was stuck between her pads. Once removed she no longer limped. She certainly has me trained well. Fri, 21 Sep 2012 09:11:32 EST Tuesday and the Sun is rising http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5064547 Today is glorious and yes, the temperature won't be soaring anywhere near 80 - yeah!! I LOVE this time of year. The leaves are not only changing color but are falling from the trees rapidly, something about the lack of water this summer. My garden is pretty well done, maybe just a few more small tomatoes. Making fresh spaghetti sauce is my favorite summer 'thing' and I will miss it. Tue, 18 Sep 2012 08:55:20 EST Sinus vs cold vs allergies http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5062951 How in the world do you know if your congestion is due to a common cold, sinusitis or allergies? I just read about sinusitis, now I need to read about the common cold and then allergies. I bet I won't be any closer to self-diagnosis then before reading the info. Guess I'll just keep hydrating and take some naps and hope to feel better in 7-10 days. Mon, 17 Sep 2012 10:28:18 EST
