PATTISTAMPS's SparkPeople Blog PATTISTAMPS's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community A hard day for me This is not going to be a bouncy, happy, inspiring, blog. Today I am writing because I need to say this. It is a very tough day. My grand-nephew Eli, who is 3, is on his way to Duke medical center today for a stem cell transplant. Without it he will die. With it, he has a 60% chance. Yes. It has been a rough road for him and his mom since his birth. He did not eat well - would not breast feed or take bottles. He threw up every day. Not spit up. Huge vomiting. He has sensory issues... Tue, 27 Jan 2015 13:30:46 EST No more yo-yo I was asked as part of a challenge whether I had ever yo-yoed... You know, lose it and gain it right back. Of course I have. And I am betting every single member of SparkPeople has at one time or another! But I am done with the yo-yo! How??? Easy!

When you go on a diet, you decide how much weight you are going to lose and how long you will take to lose it. And if you fall off your diet at some point, you are disappointed in yourself, and probably gain the weight you just lost... Mon, 3 Nov 2014 15:13:44 EST Ounce by ounce, inch by inch... I used to follow a Spark member who called himself the slowest loser. I think that I may have replaced him. In 2013 I lost a total of 5 pounds. that's right. 5. This year I am down about 11 - just over a pound a month. Not that I am complaining... I am actually quite pleased that I have gotten rid of this much. 4 more pounds and I will be back to my original 40 pound loss. And then I can start on "new weight". It is not easy, this losing weight. In my 20's, 10 pounds in 2 weeks was... Thu, 9 Oct 2014 14:07:45 EST Great Expectations An optional activity for BLC26 is to blog about your expectations from the challenge. This is a 12 week challenge, and it is pretty activity intense. I do have some pretty big expectations..

1. Have fun! One of the reasons to join a challenge team is the camaraderie of the group and the opportunity to make new friends. Add to that the fun ways the leaders of these teams spice things up with weekly challenges, week-end challenges, inter and intra team challenges - there is some... Mon, 22 Sep 2014 14:45:58 EST And They're OFF!! Today one of my two challenges begins - the second one starts on Saturday. I am really determined that this time I am going to get my weight moving! Today is the BLC26 (Biggest Loser Challenge) and on Saturday the 5% Challenge starts. They are both going to be fun, and they are both going to push me to do more. I have an ambitious goal - 10 pounds. And that is 10 pounds with a 10 day vacation in October, my DH's birthday, Halloween and Thanksgiving. So 10 pounds will require serious eff... Wed, 17 Sep 2014 13:49:36 EST Why I want to lose weight I am participating in two great challenges that begin this month. One is the 5% Challenge and the other is BLC26. One of the pre-challenge assignments for the 5% challenge is to list the reasons why I want to lose weight. I don't really think a lot about them, so this will be kind of stream of consciousness.

1. My heart! I have some plaque build up now, and do not want it to get worse. I have a family history of heart disease and both parents had by-pass operations. I'd pr... Tue, 2 Sep 2014 12:44:43 EST Spark Police??? My DH loves to tease, and my addiction to spark people and the changes I have made are fair game. Here in Orlando we have "Magical dining month" every September, with great restaurant deals - 3 or 4 course dinners for $33. We have made reservations for one each week. My husband has told me that he fears that the black helicopter with the Spark emblem on the side 529 will come down and stop us from eating! He also warns me about the "SparkPolice" frequently. While I know he i... Wed, 27 Aug 2014 14:48:36 EST Join me in a challenge! Come one, come all - to lose 5% of your weight in 8 weeks!!

ndividual.asp?gid=63518

There are many teams to choose from, all located in the Team Forum:

Any Team is Great!
Casual Travelers
Champions in the Kitchen
Cloverleafs
Determined Daisies
Firecrackers (I'm a Firecracker!!!) 283
Shooting Stars
Spirited Underdogs!
Starfish
Teddy Bears
... Mon, 18 Aug 2014 14:31:58 EST My NSVs OK, if you are a newbie - or maybe even been around a while - you might be asking "What are NSVs, and are they contagious???" An NSV is a non-scale victory. Something special that happens that makes you realize that even if the scale isn't moving much, you are making progress.

One of my first NSVs was the day I tried on a pair of size 14 capris - AND THEY FIT!! I was shopping alone, but I told all the people anywhere close to the fitting room, and I actually cried! It had bee... Wed, 13 Aug 2014 13:07:29 EST Anything or Everything I was married at 18 years old, and my first husband was very materialistic. Whatever anyone else had, he wanted, only bigger and better! We both had good jobs, we had not debt except our house, but he was not a happy person. If his friend got a boat, he needed a bigger one. A pool? Same thing. I used to tell him that we can have ANYTHING we want, just not EVERYTHING we want.

That lesson has carried me through some hard times and some great times. I realize that for anything ... Wed, 6 Aug 2014 10:56:32 EST My morning walk Today I had a lovely walk. I had a hard night sleeping, so got out a little later than normal, which meant it was pretty warm out - OK, HOT! I always like seeing the squirrels and birds. We have a beautiful Black Ibis that hangs around in our development, and seeing him is always a treat. I met a new friend - Charlie, a black lab who was orphaned as a result of Hurricane Charlie here in Florida 10 years ago. She was as playful as a puppy, but had a little grey hair around the muzzle. Ta... Tue, 17 Jun 2014 13:08:04 EST Queen of the Klutzes... OK, I am clumsy. In a very dramatic way. There was the time I tripped in the SteinMart parking lot, did a double gainer and skinned my knee without ripping my pants or the brace I was wearing on my knee. My 3 BFFs stood there laughing while I was laying in the traffic lane. The gentleman who saw it happen got up and walked away. My friends did ask if I was ok once they stopped laughing. I guess it was pretty spectacular...

Then there was the day I was here in my home office a... Wed, 28 May 2014 13:54:14 EST Healthy or Not? Avocados... I have to admit, I am not a fruit and veggie eater. Oh, I have a 1/2 cup of orange juice every morning, and always have at least one veggie serving (usually 2) for dinner, but 5 a day? Or 7? Not so much. Still, I have been working on this. At least one week during each 5% challenge is a "Freggie week" where your team gets credit for what you eat. I really try hard to get my full quota during those weeks. But I realize I have to do better. Last week I bought an avocado at the farmer's ... Tue, 27 May 2014 13:15:21 EST Memorial Day 2014 Today I honor all those who lost their lives in the service of our country, as well as those who lost their youth, their innocence, and are carrying the physical and mental scars of their service. Last night I watched the PBS Memorial Day show, which always moves me to tears. I got an added bonus though, because my nephew's fiancé is one of the Navy Sea Chanters, and I got a glimpse of her on-stage.

My father, my grandfather, my uncles, my cousins - most have served. One uncle... Mon, 26 May 2014 11:12:53 EST Take a Hike! I have started doing a lot more walking in the last couple of months. I was diagnosed with beginning stages of heart disease, and the doctor said 30 minutes or more, 5 times a week. I have been sick twice, and not up to walking, but otherwise I have really taken this to heart.. no pun intended!

My Dad had a mild heart attack at age 46. He was always active, but from then on he walked every night. He would say 'I'm going for a hike", even though it was really a walk around the... Sat, 24 May 2014 13:12:35 EST A little food for thought..
While going though my email from the last 12 days, I came across this little movie about coffee.. sort of.. I had to share this with all of you.

LifeIsLikeCoffee

Enjoy! Mon, 24 Jun 2013 14:45:04 EST I DID it!!! Happy Friday, everyone!

Today is the end of week 1 of the 5% challenge. I have to say it has been a GREAT week. First of all, I lost 3 pounds. Wait, let me say it again...

I LOST 3 POUNDS THIS WEEK!!!

OK, last Saturday's official weigh-in was high, and I knew some of it was water, but I am now at my lowest weight this year. And that makes me happy.

I also had the debacle with the step mill... but today, I decided I was going to do 5 minutes on ... Fri, 17 May 2013 13:37:10 EST And I thought I was in good shape..... Well this morning I had a wake-up call... I have thought I was in pretty good shape. I've been working out regularly, can do 35 minutes on the elliptical, and get that heart rate up there. I live in Orlando, where it is flat, and in 29 days we are heading for Seattle and then onto an Alaskan cruise. There are lots of hills and mountains to be climbed on the trip, so I am trying to get into shape for that. Today I decide to use the Stair Climber...

There are 2 types of stair ma... Wed, 15 May 2013 12:53:15 EST It's Monday... Sometimes Monday is a drag... have to work, the weekend is over... but today, I am feeling good! I got through the weekend without significant deviation from my healthy eating plan. I did some exercise each day. Today I did a really good workout at the gym, and am feeling pretty darn proud of myself.

Except it is 2:30 PM, and I have a bad case of the munchies. I know I should really keep working on my tax stuff, but I really want to hit the kitchen for something... maybe some... Mon, 11 Mar 2013 14:29:42 EST Week 2 - Day 7 - Sharing Today is the final day of "directed" blogging. Today's topic is anything else I would like to share with my team. First let me say that my team goes beyond the Sparkling Firecrackers, who ARE amazing, and includes all of my sparkfriends or anyone else who happens upon this blog.

I was a little resistent to being told what to blog... and honestly, by day 3 was thinking "what else can you say about drinking water?". But I persevered, and learned new things by doing so - about m... Fri, 8 Mar 2013 11:59:47 EST Week 2 - Day 6 - Motivation and Support Today's blog homework is to access whether I need help with motivation and/or support and if so, to ask for it. This is still applicable to my new habit, drinking that 64 ounces of waer! Well, right now my motivation is really high - for one thing, I am really wanting to help my team. For another, I want to lose the 5% of my weight. If I do this now, and joing another challenge after this, I can expect to be a lot closer to my goal for the year, and closer to my eventual long-term goal. ... Thu, 7 Mar 2013 13:50:12 EST Building a habit - Day 5 Today I am supposed to write about what I can do to improve on this habit - drinking water. I feel as though I am doing it well, and there is not much more I can do except follow through on drinking it, follow my plan to get the first 4 cups in the morning and drink one first thing in the morning.

I think the real value in this blog is to keep that new habit firmly in mind. To keep me from letting it slip before it is hardwired into my life. I have to think about the daily que... Wed, 6 Mar 2013 11:54:55 EST Week 2 - Day 4 - Day by Day So how am I doing - day by day???? Am I incorporating my new water habit into my life? I am. I have not missed drining at least 9 glasses daily since the start of this challenge. So far today, 4, but will have 2 more down before I leave the office. I really fell like it makes a difference, and I am going to do my best to keep this up. However, I am now thining I should have made a committment to food tracking... I'm guessing that will come up as a weekly challenge later in this 8 wee... Tue, 5 Mar 2013 13:56:48 EST Week 2 - Day 4 - Day by Day So how am I doing - day by day???? Am I incorporating my new water habit into my life? I am. I have not missed drining at least 9 glasses daily since the start of this challenge. So far today, 4, but will have 2 more down before I leave the office. I really fell like it makes a difference, and I am going to do my best to keep this up. However, I am now thining I should have made a committment to food tracking... Tue, 5 Mar 2013 13:56:47 EST Week 2 - Day 3 - Winter Into Spring 5% Challenge Today's topic is "What Am I dong to stay on track" with my new habit - drinking water.

I am tracking my water all day.. And getting those first 4 cups prior to noon is my best shot. So it is now 10:21, and I have had almost the first 4 cups. I do find that after last week's emphasis on water that drinking it this week is easier - so that maybe it WILL be a habit before this challenge is over.

If you are reading this, and did not join this challenge, think about th... Mon, 4 Mar 2013 10:24:43 EST Week 2, Day 2... How will I create my water habit 274 274 274 274

To get the habit of drinking enough water, I need to start with a glass before breakfast. I always have a glass of water with dinner, and if I eat lunch out, have one there, but that first glass is the one that sets me up for the day. Then I need to fill that 32 oz bottle, and keep on sipping! If I get 4 glasses in before noon, I always have 8 or more. If I don't, its an uphill battle! So I am starting with water ... Sun, 3 Mar 2013 15:09:08 EST Building a habit it is week 2 of the 5% challenge, and I am feeling good. last week were were tracking water - up to 10 cups a day. I managed 10 most days, and 9 yesterday. But I know this is a hard one to make a habit for me. And yet, I feel better, my body processes work better, and the scale said it was a good thing! So how do I do it???

I am going to try hard to do 9 glasses a day instead of 8. That means filling that 4 cup water bottle twice, and having a glass of water with dinner. s... Sat, 2 Mar 2013 10:54:21 EST All Personal Trainers Are NOT Equal! My gym was bought out last year by another large chain. We lost all of our personal trainers. Every last one. Most went to a new gym that one of the best trainers started. But it is a little further away, and a little more expensive, so I stayed where I am.

Now that they have new trainers, they are offering 2 free sessions to current members to try to get us to sign up with a trainer. Not a bad thing - that was how I had found my trainer before. So I was willing, and yester... Thu, 7 Feb 2013 14:49:17 EST Thoughts on Triggers As you may know, I have joined the 5% Winter Challenge. We are having daily assignments prior to our 8 week challenge. My assignment for today is to analyze trigger foods - what, when, why, and how I can avoid them.

My main triggers are home are not the foods themselves - I generally eat healthy snacks, and don't keep unhealthy snack foods in the house. But on the afternoons when my DH is out and I am working from home alone, I have an insatiable appetite. I eat a 90 calorie ... Wed, 6 Feb 2013 12:54:48 EST Why do I want to lose weight?? I have joined a challenge group, and my assignment for today is to list why I want to lose weight. A little introspetion is required here, folks... I mean I know I want to look better, feel better, and be healthier, but that's not quite specific enough.

The first reason is health - I do not want to end up with heart bypass surgery like both of my parents. I do not want to become a diabetic. I don't want to be the one puffing up the stairs! I don't want to lose a limb, like my ... Tue, 5 Feb 2013 11:48:47 EST 2,500!!! 2,500 Calories. That is what I ate yesterday. Needless to point out, it was pretty far above my range... I had a fairly high calorie snack yesterday - Bel Vita cookies. And we went out to dinner and then to the theatre. I really didn't think I made bad choices - a salad with citrus vinigarette, Blackened Sea Scallops... No desert. But the bread basket proved irresistable, especially with the citrus butter seasoned with paprika. And the scallops were served on a bed of sweet potato ris... Sat, 12 Jan 2013 15:39:40 EST Jump Start I made it through the first week of my January Jump Start challenge. Adding the extra days of cardio is probably the best thing for me. I know my doctor will be pleased, because he always tells me 3 times a week is not enough. 5 will make him smile, especially if I can weigh in lower than the last time. I have a month or so till I see him, so hopefully I will have a good number! At least he didn't see what I did during December... he would not be pleased!

Today I worked out at... Fri, 11 Jan 2013 11:57:58 EST Headed in the Right Direction I have tracked my food for 7 full days now - the calorie graph is up and down, looks wild. BUT, when I averaged all 7 days, I am within my range, and slightly in the lower half! That is a great accomplishment for me!

Do you find that knowing you have to post it to your tracker sometimes keeps you from eating something? I have found that. Happily, I might add. Of course I could eat it and not track it, but I think I do enough lying to myself on a regular basis, no point in tel... Wed, 9 Jan 2013 15:42:08 EST Tough One week ago I joined the 13 pounds in 13 weeks challenge. A couple of days later I joined the January Jumpstart challenge. My first week - and yes, I lost that first pesky pound. Honestly, I had hoped for more - I know it would have just been water weight, but you know how those numbers can affect your brain...

Now the workouts... I have been doing (sort of...) 3 30 minute cardio workouts and 3 strenght training workouts a week - except in December, when I probably did 5 the... Tue, 8 Jan 2013 13:07:56 EST Week 1 - Day 6 I am -participating in 2 challenges right now - The 4 week jumpstart, and the Lose 13 pounds in 13 weeks challenge. Tomorrow is weigh in day, and I am not feeling very good about it. My scale was NOT kind to me this morning... I know, you shouldn't weigh in daily, but I seem to have a compulsion... I did not stay in my calorie range over the weekend. Not far out of it, mind you, still less than I burn daily, but still... OK, on Friday I was only 1 calorie over.. So far today, eat... Mon, 7 Jan 2013 12:49:50 EST Making progress Day by day... I have been doing better. I have tracked my food beginning on January 2. OK, it is only 2 full days, but I haven't tracked in MONTHS, so I am proud of this. And I did a long workout this morning at the gym, and then did my January Jumpstart Video. The scale even showed a pound down today, although I know I haven't actually lost a pound. Still, it feels good to see it heading in the right direction!

The weekend is always difficult, but I actually ate below my ca... Fri, 4 Jan 2013 11:54:56 EST A new year - a new me! 2013 - Wow! I guess it seemed like 2012 just began and here we are in another new year. Will this be the year I finally lose that weight?? Nope, not it that's my attitude. Let's try that again...

THIS is the year I will lose that weight once and for all!!!

How was that? I have a number of things to work on this year - personally, professionally and health and fitness are all on my list. I have taken the first steps... I reset my weight ticker, joined a challenge, ... Wed, 2 Jan 2013 13:59:23 EST A poem written for the Connecticut children I received this in my email, and had to share it. The author is attributed at the bottom of the poem:

Twas' 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38 when 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven's gate.

Their smiles were contagious, their laughter filled the air..
they could hardly believe all the beauty they saw there.

They were filled with such joy, they didn't know what to say.
they remembered nothing of what had happened earlier that day... Tue, 18 Dec 2012 13:17:28 EST Happy Birthday To MEEEEEEE Yesterday was my 60th birthday. 60.... Hard to believe I am that old. But I rejoiced yesterday while I was working out. I am stronger and healthier today than I was when I turned 50. I can do more. I like myself more.

Maybe I'm not where I want to be, but today I can rejoice in where I am. Thu, 13 Dec 2012 13:03:18 EST What I learned last month... Last month I realized I was within stiking distance of 1,000 fitness minutes for the first time in months. I had been sick for pretty much the month of May, and just haven't gotten fully back. So I decided to try to make the last 400 minutes in 6 days. I didn't make it - life got in the way, but what I did manage was a new personal best workout. And I also learned that you do need a day of rest. It seems to have given me the boost I need as far as fitness.. I am doing much better this m... Fri, 10 Aug 2012 12:28:14 EST Can I do this????? I had really planned to get in 1000 fitness minutes this month, but the month is winding down, and I am a ways away... After today's 85 minute workout and with Monday's 85 minute workout, I will still be short about 174 minutes... I usually do 25 minutes a couple of non-gym days a week, but I will need 58 minutes all three days - tomorrow, Sunday and Tuesday - in order to make it. I know it isn't all that important in the grand scheme of things, but I WANT that trophy...

I CAN... Fri, 27 Jul 2012 12:27:33 EST
