PAPERCLIPSUE's SparkPeople Blog PAPERCLIPSUE's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community My Return to SparkPeople I haven't been on for quite sometime. A lot of things have changed. The saddest of all was my only sister died last December. She truly was my best friend. I had a hard time for several months. I'm the last one left in my childhood family. That felt strange and lonely. Thankfully, the Lord reminded me that I was never alone because of Him. Also, I was reminded I had my own family - 3 wonderful sons, great husband, grandchildren, daughter-in-law, neice, nephew, friends . . . It's fu... Sat, 1 Nov 2014 09:22:01 EST Our First Agility Trial Colman and I competed in our first agility trial in October 2013.

My trainer had warned me that dogs will go a little crazy in a new environment and not to be disappointed if I didn't make a qualifying score for my first time.

I entered in four events. The first thing he did was run to sniff the judge!! Then seemed distracted the whole time. When I would send him through a tunnel he would growl, then go. When I sent him on the doggie walk, he would growl and then g... Wed, 26 Feb 2014 08:33:30 EST Our Australian Cattle Dog Ryder is turning out to be the best dog ever. The mouthing is slightly less than in June. He knows many tricks. He is so quick to learn. My son now has him running full speed ahead chasing and catching his frisbee.

He has also started agility lessons. Yippee! Fri, 26 Jul 2013 11:01:09 EST Wishing I had listened to my Spark People friends. . . We got the Australian Cattle dog. His name is Ryder. He is the sweetest, most in-tune dog we've ever had. He is smart as a tack. My son, his owner, has taught him a lot of tricks. He is usually very well behaved. Most of his antics are related to being a puppy. But, he does MOUTH!!! BIG TIME!!! We are trying to get that curbed. Then we should be able to breathe, but for now you never know when teeth will set in on you. Beware! Thu, 6 Jun 2013 10:41:59 EST Colman Rocks at Agility We have been taking agility lessons for nearly a year, now. He loves his contact obstacles such as the dog walk and the A-frame. He is getting more confidant on the teeter as well. He jumps through hoops, over hurdles, panels, and broad jumps. Of course there are the tunnels and chutes. We are just beginning to do weave poles. We have bad days and great days and everything in between. Mostly, he does a very good job! (Me, too, I guess.) Thu, 6 Jun 2013 10:37:23 EST Austalian cattle dog AKA blue heeler My son wants a blue heeler. I'm not sure we should get one. He/she would basically be a family pet. My son wants to do agility with the dog. I am concerned that it will herd our dogs & cats. Can they be trained to stop herding? Do they bite? If you have one please tell me about yours. Thu, 22 Nov 2012 20:36:10 EST The Misadventures of New York I took a bus tour to New York City. In four days we saw many wonderful sights. I thought this would be a great way to walk my 10,000 steps! Sadly, mistaken.

MONDAY was our travel day. We spent the night in Harrisburg, PA.

TUESDAY: We got to New York to meet our step-on guide. The bus broke down. We had to
wait for another bus to pick us up. At least it was not on the Interstate. The poor guide had to wait with us. But soon our new bus/driver arrived. We... Mon, 30 Jul 2012 14:21:37 EST Fourth Agility Lesson is Extreme Success All of the dogs - let me repeat that - ALL of the dogs went through the tunnels eagerly! Everyone did great! We even tried 2 new obstacles: A-frame and Chute. My grandson was there to assist us. All of the dogs did well.

We did a lot of tunnels to practice our handling skills. All of the dogs were great. The instructor was very pleased.

Did I tell you how great we ALL did? Another fun night! Thu, 19 Jul 2012 09:18:29 EST Colman Wows in 3rd Agility Lesson Well, at least in my eyes.

I took my 7 year old grandson and my sister with me. The instructor put him to work. He got to hold the dogs at one end of a tunnel while the handler called him from the other end. When I took Cameron (my grandson) home he excitedly told his parents that when he grows up he wants to be a dog trainer. (Yeah!) He had a blast.

So did Colman and I. He did everything as if he were a pro. I was so proud and surprised! We don't have all the a... Thu, 12 Jul 2012 09:21:45 EST Colman's Second Lesson in Agility The first half seems to be the hardest. Too many clickers! When he hears the clicker he won't look at me, he won't accept treats, and he acts nervous & tries to run away!

The second half is much better. I think he likes the activity better. Since we are taking turns on the obstacles there are no clicks happening while he is running through the tunnel or we are walking past obstacles practicing our footwork.

We even worked off leash for a short time. He did very well... Thu, 28 Jun 2012 09:04:17 EST First Day of Agility Yeah! We did it!

Last night was our first agility class. We had 6 dogs. 1 Aussie, 1 Golden retriever, 3 poodles and 1 golden doodle. One of the poodles was just like Colman only he was a bit taller. He fell in love with her and she with him -- until the other dogs arrived.

In the first half of class we worked on handling. Some of the handlers used clickers. If you have read my other blogs you will know that Colman is terrified of the clicker! Every time someone w... Thu, 21 Jun 2012 09:01:16 EST The "Old Man" Goes Walking For our walk, I decided to take our 10 year old Boston terrier with us this morning. Colman, Bauxleigh, and I walked a leisurely mile. He did very well. It was nice and cool, plus the walk is an easy walk.

I used a coupler to hook them together. Bauxleigh remembered how to walk on a leash and behaved very well. But, if Bauxleigh lagged behind it would pull on Colman. Colman didn't seem to mind. I just kept an eye on Bauxleigh and tried not to let that happen.

It ... Mon, 11 Jun 2012 09:43:50 EST A Sad "Tail" I am getting ready to start a beginning class in agility with my dog, Colman. My trainer wanted me to start him off with some clicker training. She said to be really fast with his favorite treat.

So we went home to begin. I clicked it and he ran away and hid. Wouldn't come out and wouldn't accept treats! So I would click in my pocket or when he was in the other room to get him used to it. I tried this for 3 weeks.

My son and his family were visiting. I told him ab... Thu, 31 May 2012 21:45:47 EST Agility is getting closer. Our first class is in June.

Today I set up a mini-course. I have a short tunnel, hurdle, weave poles, and a pause box. I only set up the tunnel, hurdle and pause box. I set the hurdle about 2" up the pole. I didn't attempt the weave poles.

He seemed to love it. He would sail through the hurdle and run through the tunnel without any problem. He quickly figured out the the pause box wasn't fun. It was his most challenging part. The real problem was me! I was huffi... Fri, 11 May 2012 13:57:35 EST Did we name her Sally, Louise, or Mabel? Back in September I wrote a blog about a yellow cat that came our way. She is now a family member. Her name is not Sally. Her name is not Louise. Her name is not Mabel! We finally named her Alice Mae. She gets called Allie, Alice, Red, Big Red and Kitty-Kitty. She doesn't answer to any of those!

She grew so quickly into a gorgeous yellow tabby. She is the best mouser ever. Living on a farm we always battle mice, especially in the winter. We had such a quiet winter and she... Fri, 11 May 2012 13:46:43 EST Colman and I are going to begin agility training in June I had a lesson with an aligity instructor yesterday. The purpose was to take another obedience class. I told her that I wanted to someday do agility. She watched me work with him and she worked with him as well. She thought he was ready. (I didn't think he was ready. He doesn't always mind.) The next open class is in June. I am very proud of him and excited to get started. In the meantime, I am working on more obedience. 338 Thu, 5 Apr 2012 10:27:22 EST Spark People Phone App is awesome. I decided to try the SP phone app. It is faster and in some ways easier than the web site. You can enter your food, fitness, weight, & water.

They are experimenting with a barcode scanner. It works pretty well. You aim the SP scanner at a barcode and it tells you how many calories . . . in each helping. You click it and it is entered! You also can enter the number of helpings if you had more than one.

It has a great fitness tracker as well.

My only dis... Thu, 26 Jan 2012 09:31:28 EST After Christmas Thoughts It seems I suddenly became a social butterfly at age 61! Apparently, too old for all of the excitement.

I was so very, very busy. I was excited and happy, but dreadfully tired. So many rehearsals, shows, parties. . . Can't believe I survived - but I did joyfully.

Christmas was quite a blessing. We decided to cut back on Christmas spending. It was a challenge to find things that were still nice gifts -- but we found out it can be done! Also, for the first time we... Tue, 27 Dec 2011 10:28:28 EST Thanksgiving Celebration with the in-laws. Are they still in-laws when the in-laws of the in-laws show up? Enough said . 24 Mon, 21 Nov 2011 09:50:56 EST It's Show Time! Well, actually it is over, but what a time!

My Gospel Quintet sang in a small restaurant Friday night. We sang some gospel songs but mostly old 60s such as "At the Hop", "Unchained Melody", "Moon River" and others such as "Country Roads" and "I'll Be There" - plus jokes and stories. Our last song was "God Bless America". Everyone stood up and sang along with us!!

The great news is we filled the restaurant to capacity! Some couldn't stay! The restaurant said it was t... Mon, 21 Nov 2011 09:47:55 EST Pet Expo 2011 I took my poodle, Colman and my sister to the Pet Expo this year. We had a really great time. There were many different breeds and mixes. We saw only one other poodle, but there were lots of Boston Terriers, Chihuahuas, and English Bulldogs! Also, some gorgeous labradoodles & golden doodles -- in fact many different kinds of doodles! (Shih-doodle, papi-doodle. . .)

There was the dog that didn't have 2 front legs! Amazingly, he walked around on his hind-legs with his owner nea... Tue, 15 Nov 2011 17:29:32 EST Eating too much, Walking too little, Encouragement too small The past two weeks have been busy. I have met with different friends on different days. It has been wonderful -- EXCEPT I ate out with everyone of them! At first I was well-behaved, but not for long.

Thus, I ate too much.

It has been raining and raining and raining.

Thus, I walked too little.

I lost my pedometer and actually felt lost without it.

Thus, I walked too little.

I have not been on Spark People very often in those ... Mon, 26 Sep 2011 11:33:52 EST Oh, No! Not Another One! Saturday, my husband found an injured kitty. He brought her in to clean her up. She had been in a fight. We nursed her and fed her (our first mistake).

Two of my sons and I were oo-ing and aw-ing after her when my husband said, "Keep the cat in the house. I'm mowing!"

IMMEDIATELY we named the cat! Noah wanted to call her "Sally", Sam wanted to call her "Louise", and I wanted "Mabel". Those names rolled off our tongues as if we had thought days and days about what ... Mon, 12 Sep 2011 11:21:07 EST The Power of the Word August 29, 2011

The Power of the Word

By Michael Youssef, Ph.D.

The Bible gives us strength and power like no other book. It has the power to change people's lives, the power to help us overcome temptation, and the power to overcome our circumstances.

Perhaps one of the reasons so many people avoid the Bible is because it is like a mirror. Many times we do not want to be confronted with the truth about ourselves. The Scripture tells ... Mon, 29 Aug 2011 10:24:22 EST The Popcorn Mystery My favorite popcorn is Orville Redenbacher's Tender White.

Serving size is 2 TBS unpopped which makes about 3.5 cups popped.

Servings per bag: about 3 (Each bag should be about 10.5 cups - I measured 9.5 cups)

2 TBS unpopped = 170 calories; 1 cup of popped = 40 calories (Has anyone really eaten just one cup of popcorn?)

3.5 cups popped (serving size) would equal 140 calories - not 170 calories.

Therefore it is better to eat your po... Sat, 27 Aug 2011 15:43:32 EST Easy Breezy Email from Spark People Most of you probably already know how convenient the email is from Spark People, but I didn't figure it out until just now.

You just click on it and it takes you to your thread or whatever. Then you close and return immediately to your own email and move on to the next. You don't have to go to each team and search updates. I love it.

I got a new email address from Yahoo! (free). The only thing that is sent there is SparkMail. Now all I have to do is go there and st... Fri, 26 Aug 2011 11:18:55 EST Do presidents become president by clicking the wrong button! I was visiting one of my teams. I noticed it needed a new leader-so I clicked on the button, hoping to find INFORMATION about what a team leader does, how to do it, how much time it takes . . .

Instead, it congratulated me on becoming the new leader!!

Now I am looking for the "UNBECOME A LEADER" button. Thu, 18 Aug 2011 12:14:57 EST Apologies to All Bicyclists I have been riding an exercise bike at the gym for a while. I can go 4 miles with random hills in 21 minutes at level 8. I know that is nothing to brag about, but I felt I was ready for the real thing. I hopped on my bike and decided to go 2 little miles. Whew! I forgot about our hills! (Don't laugh Sherry!) They are gentle but kind of long. (Stop laughing Sherry.) I rode my bike 2 miles in 14 minutes. I was even coasting down the hills!

I got home and put my foot down ... Thu, 11 Aug 2011 17:36:35 EST Doesn't it feel great when . . . Doesn't it feel great when . . . you drop into another "decade" of pounds! 149 pounds sounds so much better than 150 pounds!! Sat, 6 Aug 2011 14:52:00 EST Exercise is Wonderful! Or so I am trying to convince myself. I really do enjoy exercising even though I recently got off track. I tried a new workout DVD: "Biggest Loser Workout" Power Walk. So far it is great. The #1 walk pushes me just a little more. Felt great!

I gained a pound. My calories were good. I think it was the lack of exercising and a few poor food choices (chocolate chip cookies). I didn't have many, but I had 2 a day for 3 days in a row!! Thu, 4 Aug 2011 11:19:47 EST My Brave Little Poodle Colman, my mini-poodle, began barking and came to sit by me. He wouldn't budge. Something had scared him. I got him distracted with his toy raccoon. I threw it and he brought it back to me several times. But one time I threw it into the kitchen. He ran up to the doorway but would not go into the kitchen. Instead he started barking again and ran back to me. I went to the kitchen to see what was there. My husband said he saw his own reflection in the patio doors and was barking at it. ... Thu, 21 Jul 2011 10:30:47 EST Bicycling Update So I got my bike out of the barn and began to wash it off. It is very rusty and will need new tires. My husband took one look at it and said it would be cheaper to buy a new one! Yippee! However, I am not sure I want to invest in a new bike before I try to ride again. (I may not stick with it.) Thu, 21 Jul 2011 10:26:56 EST Gifts from a Dog Colman, my mini-poodle, and I were watching TV last night. I, of course, fell asleep. When I woke up Colman was gone, but I had a toy raccoon and a flip-flop in my lap! He loves his mommy! Tue, 19 Jul 2011 10:48:10 EST Bicycling I am thinking of cleaning up the old bike and try that for a change. May even buy a doggie basket so I can take Colman with me. Gizmo is still pretty hefty to cart along. Fri, 15 Jul 2011 14:29:07 EST What to Do I am doing fairly well keeping my calories in control - but my fat grams are horrific! I am having trouble with healthy food. I have added a few fruits during the week, but I need to eat more.

It seems I am hungry more than I was earlier in my program. I think it may be because I have allowed myself some "treats" but too many.

Once a foodaholic always?? Wed, 6 Jul 2011 22:46:42 EST I lost my first 10 pounds! I lost my first 10 pounds and am excited! I have 20 more pounds to go.

I am looking forward to losing my next 5 pounds! - in July. 334 Fri, 1 Jul 2011 10:00:47 EST Forgetfulness pays off I couldn't find the flea meds for my pets. So I hunted and hunted. I was getting very frustrated when I finally found them exactly where I had put them.

If that wasn't enough, I couldn't find my cell phone which was set to vibrate! Again I searched and searched to the point of extreme frustration! Why can't I keep track of things?

Then I looked at my step counter. 334 It turned out to be a good thing. I reached my goal that day. Tue, 21 Jun 2011 09:17:37 EST
