PAMSPARKS's SparkPeople Blog PAMSPARKS's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Too Long Away I haven't actually been away, but I haven't been very active. I really need the structure though. My goal this week was to re-engage with a team, log-in everyday, and track nutrition and exercise everyday. I missed a day, but will keep at it.

I can do this! Thu, 14 Apr 2016 21:48:45 EST Busy week It's a ridiculously busy work week, long hours, working lunches (and breakfasts and dinners) where food is ordered in. I'm not going to be able to track everything.

So my mini goals for the week are to log into SP everyday, even if only to review my goals and not get out of the habit of logging in. If I don't have time to log all my nutrition, I'm not going to sweat it. My other mini goal is to get in some exercise everyday, even if it's only a walk.

Tonight though, for... Mon, 9 Feb 2015 16:58:03 EST Zumba I went to my first ever zumba class tonight - what fun! Great instructor and small supportive class - I think this is going to be a good fit for my fitness level and desire to shake up my workout routine a bit. Mon, 5 Jan 2015 22:19:52 EST Back on Track After a rough summer and fall, I am back on track. Logging my fitness and nutrition everyday and ramping up the workouts. Next step, getting the nutrition back in range - that's the goal for this week. Fri, 12 Dec 2014 20:36:54 EST Demoralized but moving on I've had some ups and downs over my years on SP. Today I stepped on the scale to find I am a pound below my heaviest weight ever. It was a demoralizing moment.

My goals this week: track everyday and be in range on the nutrition tracker every day. Next week I will be traveling and likely will not have opportunity to track, so I want to make this week count by reinforcing good nutrition and exercise habits. Sun, 13 Jul 2014 16:49:49 EST Problem Sundays It seems nearly every Sunday I am over on my nutrition tracker. Usually it's fat or calories....sometimes both. Well, knowledge is power. I can fix this. Sun, 29 Jun 2014 22:21:39 EST to track, or not to track? Do I try to track nutritional info while traveling and having several meals/day where I won't know the nutritional information, or do I not try? It will add another level of stress just finding a computer to log into (I have tried the phone app, but haven't really bonded with it) and I'm not sure it's worth it for a best guess. Then again, the trip is longer than a week and that's a long time not to track my stuff. Either way, I will try to make good choices with nutrition and shouldn't have ... Sun, 1 Jun 2014 13:52:07 EST Recovering Last week was a little rough - got some flu-like bug that wiped me out. I took days off to rest up, but it was still a long week. I didn't have the energy to log in and track stuff, didn't work out, and I'm sure I didn't always make the minimum on the food tracker because I had absolutely no appetite.

I'm slowly getting back into it. This is my first day tracking. Yesterday I managed a gentle ride on my stationary bike. My appetite is back and I've been managing to get right bac... Tue, 20 May 2014 23:02:30 EST Appreciating the small stuff I realized as I was sauntering through the blogs, I really enjoy ones where someone has a small success.... maybe getting in a walk at lunch, or taking the dog for a walk instead of watching t.v. for that 30 minutes, passing on the dessert, etc. Those small victories inspire me everyday.

My mini-goal this week: to have one small victory of my own everyday. Mon, 5 May 2014 19:41:18 EST Moving on I didn't meet my Feb goal of losing 3 lbs. I totally blew it. Feeling kind of low at this point.

Okay, done. Time to get on with it. Sun, 2 Mar 2014 21:09:45 EST Mini-goal It's down to the wire to meet my mini-goal of losing three pounds this month. I know it doesn't sound like much, but lately it's been a struggle losing at all. I set the goal at the end of the first week in Jan and am down two. Still, a pound in as week should be achievable, even if the weather keeps me indoors. Sun, 26 Jan 2014 20:08:41 EST What's up with that? Everyday this week I've felt like I've been doing well with nutrition, and everyday I've been over on my tracker. I'm usually good at estimating. This week I've just been oh so wrong! Thu, 24 Oct 2013 20:45:25 EST Back at it Got back from vacation and looking at those vacation pictures was a real eye-opener. I've been struggling to stay with the program, keep my eye on the goal, and all those other sayings but really struggling with living it day-to-day. Today has been one of introspection and getting focused again....and let's not forget working out! I did okay on nutrition today and feel like I'm getting centered again. At least the vacation was filled with great outdoor exercise! Next step - KEEPING it in rang... Mon, 30 Sep 2013 21:40:14 EST Mud, mud, and a little more mud I went for a bike ride today - it was an absolutely great day for it. The trail was in pretty good shape, except for frequent mud puddles (some were more like little mud lakes). I was nervous about sliding and potentially losing control in the muddy areas, but by the end of the ride I was liking the muddy bits - cool on a hot day, kept me focused on the trail, and kind of fun.

Of course, I paid the price when I had to clean the bike, the car, my clothes, and me....but it was oh so... Mon, 29 Jul 2013 20:38:13 EST to that guy who inspired me You probably don't even remember me, even if you saw me a couple people in line behind you at Subway. I'm not really a regular so every time I have to look at what's new. And on this day, lunch was late, it was a stressful day, and everything looked good! That new cheesesteak...looked promising, especially if I got double cheese and meat, and for a change maybe some chips, and really, would a cookie hurt? And a soda?

The line was slow and I heard you order and saw them making your... Wed, 27 Mar 2013 22:34:20 EST Nice day, rough ride I had today off work and when I looked out it looked gray and a little ominous, but the temp was a balmy 45 F or so. What to do? Throw my bike in the car and head for my favorite bike path! By the time I got there, the sky was blue, day was fine, and off I went.

I'm not sure what went wrong...trail was very soft with occasional mud slicks and ice patches in the shade. I was exhausted early on, not sure if it was the trail conditions, something up with my bike (felt off though I co... Wed, 6 Feb 2013 20:13:45 EST Resetting trackers - should I be doing this? I've missed my goal more than a few times now. When that happens, I reset my goal (lose lbs by date), usually trying for a rate of 5 lbs/month. As a result, the food allowed in the nutrition tracker increases. Is this the right thing to do? Or should I just leave the tracker settings alone even if/when I am beyond my goal date and did not make my goal? If so, is there a way to set them back to the original defaults?

Not that I need to worry about passing my goal date again...I can ... Sun, 21 Oct 2012 22:05:37 EST Pop-Up Grrrrrrrrr I made a bison pot pie for dinner, turned out so good I'm sure I'll do it again I went to create a new grouping. Finished getting everything entered and instead of getting the "name your grouping" window, I got annoying pop-up with a couple links (starting with something like "fire up your grill"). Double-checked to be sure my grouping wasn't hiding behind a window somewhere. Nope. Entered it again...and same thing! I'm sure there must be a way to create a new grouping and this ... Mon, 15 Oct 2012 23:00:07 EST Hovering I hover around the same weight (sometimes five pounds over, sometimes five pounds under).....why this weight instead of 20 pounds less? Will I ever get there? Sun, 30 Sep 2012 15:01:53 EST Trying again I didn't track yesterday, and went over on nutrition one day I did track so it wasn't a stellar week. But today's the start of a new week and so far so good. Sun, 26 Aug 2012 23:38:02 EST Successful mini goal and late night dilemma Okay, last week's mini goal was to log on and track fitness and nutrition everyday. It might not sound like much, but I've been struggling and it was a bit of a challenge. I was successful. I went over on the nutrition two days though.

This week I have a new be in range on the nutrition tracker everyday. Here it is a little after 11pm and I am already in danger of failing....I still have not met the minimum calories today. I usually do not eat within a few hours of going ... Sun, 19 Aug 2012 23:13:18 EST Mini goal for the week Track nutrition and fitness everyday. It's going to be a rough week at work with long hours, so it will be a little challenging. I am up to it!

Sun, 12 Aug 2012 20:41:05 EST Excuses....not today I've been slacking the last week or so. Sure, I could blame it on the weather. It's hard to log in and track nutrition and fitness when there's no power and temperatures are hovering around 100. And it's hard to get motivated to workout when you know there is no way to cool down afterwards. Eating healthy when the fridge doesn't have a trace of cool left? Good luck with that.

Truth is, there's always an excuse if I want one. Choosing to do the best I can is my challenge each and e... Sun, 8 Jul 2012 20:15:14 EST At last - back in the saddle! Today I went for my first bike ride in a very long time. It was the perfect day for it - high 70s, nice breeze, blue skies....stellar day for being on a bike again. In some circles it may not qualify for much of a ride....just a couple miles on a gentle paved bike path at a serene pace. But as the first ride after an injury that kept me off the bike for over a year, I couldn't ask for more. Sat, 2 Jun 2012 15:52:27 EST still here I've been struggling with getting back into the routine after taking a break due to travel, limited computer access, etc. but I'm getting there. I'm using the mini-goal approach to get everything into the trackers each day and met another goal today by blogging. I've been getting the exercise in but I'm sure I botched the nutrition more than once! Wed, 23 May 2012 23:07:11 EST back from vacation We just got back from a 7 day cruise and you know how it everywhere! Drinks everywhere! We did get in lots of walking plus some swimming, snorkeling, and horseback riding, but not enough to balance things out. I'm going to wait and weigh in on my usual day. My goal is to get back into the routine as quickly as possible.

It was a great vacation!
Sun, 22 Apr 2012 18:55:38 EST Tracking I had a week I had decided not to track nutrition and fitness - there was just going to be a time crunch due to work travel, yard chores, etc all piling up at the same time - so I decided not to stress about getting logged into SP (which I usually do daily). Then more stuff came up. And more. So it ended up being nearly two weeks. I'm happy to say I continued good choices, dropped a pound in that time, but I did miss the routine and satisfaction of successfully meeting goals.

In an... Sun, 8 Apr 2012 12:08:19 EST It's just a scale I've been busy lately and it's all I could do to log in and get my food and exercise tracked. I've been doing pretty well in both categories, but my scale hasn't rewarded me.

To which I say, f u scale. My pants are looser, my life is balanced, and I'm feeling the spark!
Sat, 3 Mar 2012 19:17:06 EST do rabbits make good pets? If you've had a pet rabbit, please let me know your thoughts. Would you ever get another one? Does yours live indoors or outdoors? If indoors, is he/she litter box trained? What was a must-have (or must not) for a happy/healthy bunny?

I'm thinking about getting one (or possibly two) and have done quite a bit of research. I'd like to hear from anyone with hands-on experience, good or bad.

Tue, 21 Feb 2012 16:43:14 EST Doughnuts Need I say more? They were all over the place at work yesterday, some weird Valentine's Day offering. I walked by box after box ...but eventually caved. (Glazed French cruller did me in). I also had dessert after dinner. The good thing is although yesterday was over-the-top, today was a good day. The urge to indulge again was there, but I was able to stay on track and finished the day today in range on nutrition and fitness....AND have been meeting my water consumption goal. Wed, 15 Feb 2012 22:02:33 EST Doing all right Well, I'm not doing so great on my latest mini-goal, which is to drink three more glasses of water/day. But other things seem to be going right...I'm usually able to stay within the nutrition tracker, and I am still getting in the exercise. And this week the scale rewarded me with a 2lb drop! Hopefully that is not due to loss of muscle. I won't be going for another body fat comp measure until March, so I don't really have any way to tell. I feel like things are going well though. I'm not go... Wed, 1 Feb 2012 20:34:11 EST Love My TRX It looks so basic, just a couple straps and buckles....but it is so versatile! I love that I can challenge myself in as large or tiny steps (or anywhere between) that I am up to. It's added another dimension to my home workouts that is both challenging and fun for me. Tue, 24 Jan 2012 21:23:57 EST Mini-goals are working for me The mini-goals are working for me. It helps me keep the big picture in mind. I started very basic - stay in range on the tracker, keep up the fitness...those are both pretty easy again so I am going to add another....I think drinking at least 4 glasses of water/day (I know, I know....but this will challenge me and be a step in the right direction) each day this week.

Please feel free to share mini-goals that you've found helpful! I know we may have different ideas of what "mini-go... Thu, 19 Jan 2012 09:33:38 EST Mini goals under way I did not track nutrition the last two weeks of 2011 because there was so much guesswork with eating out, eating at homes of friends & family, etc. I tried to make good choices, but it's hard to know for sure. I'm trying setting some mini-goals and tracking everyday again is what I set for this week. I also set a goal of blogging before Wed to help connect with the SP community again. I know the week just started, but so far so good!

Happy 2012!
Mon, 2 Jan 2012 21:40:20 EST Shame on me Today I ate everything in sight. At work, I have a busy week where I am sitting in front of a computer all day, meals are being brought in, and unlimited cakes, cookies, pastries, etc. are only a few feet away. Some healthier snacks are also available - apples, peanuts, etc. There is no telling the nutritional amounts of the meals, so I am taking a best guess. Stress is moderately high. I did manage to enjoy an apple, but totally caved - peanuts, pastries (bite sized pastries, but I had three... Tue, 13 Dec 2011 19:56:31 EST I SOOOO take it back! I recently blogged that I was pondering leaving SP, having felt that I hit an apparently endless plateau. Thanks to the encouraging comments, by the way! A couple days ago though I had a follow-up appointment in my wellness program (sort of a step down from physical therapy but not as independent as a gym) and while I had only lost a couple pounds, more had converted from fat to lean muscle! Who knew??! Percent H2O is up (not enough, but moving in the right direction). I am SO staying wit... Sun, 20 Nov 2011 16:43:24 EST Stay or Go? I'm wondering if I've reached the end of my weight loss experience and just didn't realize it. I've been hovering at about the same weight for over a year, despite my best efforts and sticking with SP through thick and thin. I'm way short of my goal, still have about 20 lbs to go. I'm not perfect, I occasionally go over on my nutrition, or under. Once in a while I miss a workout. But overall, I've stuck with it and most days I am within range on both nutrition and exercise.

I rece... Sun, 13 Nov 2011 20:45:19 EST Feeling strong Today I'm in range with my nutrition tracker and had a great day for exercise too. I fit in a decent walk at lunch and made it through my fitness regimen in the wellness program. I can do this! Thu, 29 Sep 2011 20:23:25 EST Suspension training advice please I've just started using the TRX as part of a wellness program (sort of a transition from physical therapy to independent workouts). It's definitely a good workout! The staff have strongly recommended that I purchase one my own for home use, that it will be a core piece of rehab equipment (no pun intended). They don't sell them, I would purchase it elsewhere. I've been researching and see that there are many options for suspension training systems. The TRX's in rehab are commercially mounted... Fri, 19 Aug 2011 14:32:11 EST Need the Burn Now that I can't feel the burn, I really miss it! I am doing what I can, but I cannot wait to get back to normal workouts! Slow and steady might be the way, but it kind of stinks. Not only did I see a hare pass me by, I think a tortoise did too. Mon, 15 Aug 2011 21:00:28 EST Back on the Bike It has been a slow recovery, but the physical therapy has me on track. I have been back on the stationary bike, at long last. I've worked my way up in tiny little increments so now I'm up to 15 minutes/day. I know it doesn't sound like much, but it's 15 minutes more than I was doing two weeks ago and I can't wait to see what I'm doing two weeks from now! And while my fitness regimen has been stifled (for the time being) I am very pleased that I've been able to keep my nutrition balanced and ... Mon, 25 Jul 2011 21:09:47 EST Off kilter but staying focused I've been struggling with a hip injury the last two weeks and my fitness routine is shot. No stationary bike, no ski machine, no dvd cardio workouts, and "real" biking! Okay, so the folks on my biking teams know by "real" biking I mean a slow easy ride off-road, but it's a real ride to me! Walking is the best I can manage right now and not very far at that. I am managing some upper body work but it's all about the nutrition tracker now. I reset my trackers to match my limited fitne... Mon, 13 Jun 2011 20:12:49 EST Tracker help please I've been with SP about a year and a half and the first eight months or so there seemed to be no problem....I tracked nutrition and exercise nearly everyday (and still do) and occasionally made adjustments as needed, such as when changing workouts. Over the last six months or so though, I am constantly getting that message about not eating enough compared to calories burned, even when eating and exercising in range. I've reset the fitness settings a couple times. I've been taking best guesse... Sun, 15 May 2011 11:47:45 EST Fabulous ride Blogging two days in a row? Craziness! I had such a great day today though, who better to share it with than my fellow sparkers? What made it great? I had the best bike ride ever! It was the first time I've ridden 16 miles off-road and in the low-low time of just under 2 hours (for those of you who don't bike, that means the only thing that didn't pass me was a turtle, and it may have been dead). Terrain was flat, kind of soft and my bike and I were covered in mud by the end...and all I could... Fri, 15 Apr 2011 18:33:19 EST Decisions, decisions... Today was a beautiful day and as luck would have it, it was a day off work too. What to do....go for a bike ride, or take the dog for a hike? I am often torn these days between the two. I'm trying to get in more biking, but there's not many gorgeous spring days during the week that I'm not working and can drive somewhere to hike. The dog won, we went for a hike and had a great time. If only I could teach him to ride a bike! Thu, 14 Apr 2011 20:39:20 EST More Inches Gone Over the last few days, two people have commented on how well my "weight loss plan" is going. It was a nice surprise because the scale is just showing the same old numbers. Then I remembered my jeans seeming a bit baggy lately. I had that experience before (not recently) so I pulled out the tape measure and YES, YES, YES inches are gone! I'd forgotten all about measuring! It was a nice reminder for me not to focus too much on the scale. Thu, 17 Feb 2011 18:54:36 EST Winter challenges Winter brought on some seasonal challenges this last week and a half. I was sick with the flu, which seems like it wouldn't be so bad in terms of nutrition because I had no appetite, but I did drink lots of juice, tea with honey, etc. I didn't bother sloshing to the scale to weigh in because I was too sick to bother. Then our power went out for a few days so no home cooking, picked up meals on the go, etc. I think I did pretty well there with making the best of options available. Still, it's... Sat, 29 Jan 2011 10:44:24 EST Appreciating the Spark I realize it's been quite some time since I've blogged. Some of you know me well enough to know I'm really not much of a blogger, but when I joined SP I decided to go "all in" and that means blogging from time to time. It's been a little over a year since I joined SP. I didn't make my original goal, but I did lose some weight and I did establish some MUCH healthier eating habits. Hopefully I will take another step this year towards even better nutritional choices. I've dropped off some teams... Sun, 9 Jan 2011 17:47:42 EST Found I am feeling motivated again and back on track. I kept up with my nutrition and fitness goals, it was just a struggle to stick with it for a while there. Not seeing any progress put a damper on my enthusiasm. Now I'm enjoying my workouts again and looking at the new (lower) nutrition range as a personal challenge, which of course it is! I can do this! Tue, 30 Nov 2010 18:35:38 EST Lost It's time to set a new goal. I missed my original weight-loss goal, joined a challenge and tried again, and missed that one too. It's not all bad, I did lose a significant amount of weight and have kept it off, but still failed twice to meet what seemed like reasonable goals. So....time to try again. I'm not confident like I was the first six months or so on SP when everything seemed to be working like clockwork - stay within the nutrition tracker, keep up with the fitness, and wow - watch ...
