Before and after I had to take time off of work because I was fighting extreme headaches and fevers. Needless to say, it did a number on my savings and I am having a really hard time catching back up. Not to mention the bill collectors from the doctors who want their money because my insurance sucks.

So here I am trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle for me and my family on a budget. There are many c... Thu, 23 Aug 2012 16:48:49 EST 2012 Ragnar Great River Relay Race Report http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5024231 Ragnar Great River is the overnight running relay race that makes testing your limits a team sport. A team is made up of 12 individuals who each run 3 legs. When each runner finishes, the next one begins over the course of 198 miles. The length of each leg varies from 3-10 miles and varies in elevation difficulty. We ride in two vans of 6 runners each. For example, the first runner in the first van starts at 7:30am and runs 5 miles, when they finish, they hand the baton (slap bracelet) to run... My boyfriend actually drove me to the venue and stayed to cheer me on. Unfortunately my son was at a camping trip, otherwise he probably would have come too.

My nerves got the best of me the night before and I didn't sleep much, so I was a little groggy w... Mon, 13 Aug 2012 13:20:00 EST Training Week 8 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5003648 Technically week 8 was supposed to be my last week of training, but the timing didn't quite work out so I'll have one more week before my triathlon. I did take it easy this week, but that was because I had a 5K obstacle mud run up a local ski hill on Saturday. On Tuesday I got a ride to work and only road my bike home rather than both ways. I did increase my run though. My legs really feel like they are getting used to the transition which I hopes comes in handy during the race. Wednesday I o... Mon, 6 Aug 2012 14:45:25 EST Training Week 7 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5003618 A week late, but I'll try to enter my trials and tribulations from my 7th week of training as best I can. It was a bit of a rough week to say the least...

I started the week on track and even did a bit extra on Tuesday to make up for some missed workouts last week. Thursday I went to a Triathlon Swim Clinic and they gave us a lot of tips for the swim portion of the triathlon. One thing that stuck with me was that they said not to kick. What?! I feel like I'm barely moving when I do... Mon, 6 Aug 2012 14:19:39 EST Relief or Nausea http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4986649 I'm not sure which is that feeling in the pit of my stomach. I have been talking about doing a triathlon for years and I have been training hard for 6 weeks now, but hadn't signed up for an actual race until now. I just signed up for the YWCA Women's Triathlon. It's doesn't say it is a sprint, but it pretty much is: 500 yard swim/ 15.5 mile bike and 5K run. Why they measure the swim and the bike in the American yards and miles, I don't know, but that translates to about a 450M swim and a 25K ... Wed, 25 Jul 2012 16:36:09 EST Training Week 6 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4986459 Another week of training under my belt. I have to admit I am feeling drained. More and more days I have to convince myself to go to the gym and there have been days where I can't convince myself at all. Last week I was just so tired; all I wanted to do was lay around and eat chocolate. Part of the problem is the scale isn't budging. No matter how much I do or don't do, it just sits there. I know I must be building muscle and the scale is not the end all be all, but a pound here or there would... Wed, 25 Jul 2012 14:13:49 EST Training Week 5 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4974704 Wow! Week 5 already. That's more than half way! This week went ok exercise wise, and terrible diet wise. I missed my additional run after biking on Tuesday because I had a dinner to get ready for, then missed the next days run after strength training because I had a doctor's appt. I was thrown off on Thursday because I tried to fit my gym time in while my son was in wakeboarding and there was a aerobic swim class overtaking the pool so I couldn't swim. So instead, I ran 7 miles at a 9 min pa... Tue, 17 Jul 2012 14:23:03 EST Race fever http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4970082 I don't know why it is so hard for me to pick a tri and just do it. I'm so worried that I won't be ready or that something will happen. I've signed up for plenty of races in advance before and it hasn't phased me, but my indecisiveness on this one is driving me crazy. Technically my training is over on August 3rd. I am doing a mud obstacle race called Camp Titan on August 4th, so that weekend is out. The next weekend there are two options: one is a YWCA sprint triathlon that is just for women... Sat, 14 Jul 2012 13:55:10 EST Treadmill Accident http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4962433 237 324 231 On Saturday, I did 30 minutes of swimming, then 30 of biking, then 30 of running. By the time I got to the treadmill, I was pretty beat. I set it at my usual speed right away because sometimes my legs feel really rubbery after biking.
315

Then I tried to divert my attention.. 335

There was some infomercial about hair care that I watched word for word to keep me from watching the clock with only occasion... Mon, 9 Jul 2012 15:09:50 EST Training Week 4 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4962416 Another week of training has gone by and I am sticking to it the best I can. It was in the 100s all week, so I was very thankful for the gym. I got all my training in except for yesterday because I had to do yard work, which I guess is kind of a workout as well. On Saturday was my swim, bike, run for 90, so I did 30 minutes of each. I swam about 3/4 of a mile in the pool, then it took me about 20 minutes to dry off and get changed. I'm glad I don't have change in the transition from swim to b... Mon, 9 Jul 2012 14:53:43 EST Training Week 3 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4952260 Another week completed... sort of. The week itself is gone, but I fell off the wagon on my training. I could go into the excuses that it was hot and I was sore, but I don't have any real reason other than I didn't wanna. I went out dancing on Friday night and even though I didn't drink much, I felt a little hung over and sore the next day, so I figured it would be OK to take one day off. Then on Sunday it was unbearably hot and my boyfriend actually wanted to spend the day with me and go to a... Mon, 2 Jul 2012 16:28:02 EST Training Week 2 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4941958 Another week completed and I stayed on track for all my workouts! I actually went over on a few days. Especially my 30 min swim followed by a 30 min bike on Saturday which turned into a 15 min bike, then a 45 min swim, then a 30 min bike, then breakfast, then another 45 minutes of biking to get back home. I will admit though that between the emotional upheaval the race caused in addition to the physical exertion of the swimming and biking, I felt seriously wiped for pretty much the rest of th... Mon, 25 Jun 2012 16:18:49 EST Swimming Catastrophe http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4940189 I have never really been a swimmer, but I took lessons at the Y about 2 years ago and have been able to swim laps to reach my mileage. I know I am not a fast swimmer, but my friend talked me into doing a 1 mile swim competition at Lake Harriet. I was terrified! It's not like a 5K where anyone can do it and you get people from all speeds and abilities. These people were serious swimmers and swimming was their thing. Within the first 30 seconds, everyone was already 50 meters ahead of me. I loo... Sun, 24 Jun 2012 13:32:55 EST Training - Week 1 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4931518 I've completed my first week of triathlon training and I think it went pretty well. My biggest obstacle is staying within my allotted calories while increasing my workout. I'm always hungry! It has been getting better though; I just need to eat the right foods that sustain me and are low in fat and calories.

My next biggest obstacle is my boyfriend who is supposedly doing the tri with me, but not training at all and is not taking it seriously. I just don't want to train really har... Mon, 18 Jun 2012 12:28:55 EST Back at it http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4920024 Shortly after my making my commitment to get fit, I got really sick. I was having fevers of 105 and debilitating headaches. After about 2 weeks of that I ended up in the hospital ICU for 9 days. They determined it was histoplasmosis from a recent trip to Belize. Histo is a fungal infection that affects the lungs mostly and in my case my liver and kidneys too. So I was told I couldn't exercise for at least a month and then could only slowly ease back into anything cardiovascular.

L... Sun, 10 Jun 2012 11:09:36 EST
