I walked for 40 minutes today and, you guessed it, did two miles. Well, at least I'm doing moving. I love techie gadgets and today I hit 11,707 steps! I can feel I'm getting more fit, but it sure is a slow process. Why didn't I start this in my 20's? or even 40's?
20 Tue, 11 Jun 2013 00:33:19 EST Day 52 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5383663 Today is Day 52 of my journey with SparkPeople. Over the last few days I have been surprised that my stamina has improved. I find that I can walk farther and have more energy throughout the day. I have joined the Couch to 5K challenge and will definitely be pushed to get those miles in. I'm not a fast walker, but did push to get 1.5 miles in at 30 minutes. It might take me longer than five weeks to get to the 5K, but I will do it.

364 Sun, 9 Jun 2013 18:32:59 EST 49 Days http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5380964 I've been a member of the SparkPeople Community for 49 days. Over that time I have learned how to track my food, to motivate myself to exercise before going to work (even if I'm not a morning person), to drink at least 8 glasses of water, and to eat more vegetables. I have learned that I'm more likely to exercise than give up a tasty treat (big surprise for me). I have learned that my body loses weight at a snail's pace and that is just luck of the draw. I have learned that losing inches ... Fri, 7 Jun 2013 01:11:42 EST It really is about the journey http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5371379 Life is interesting. Just when I needed extra inspiration for continuing this journey I read one of the featured blogs on SparkPeople. Pixie-Licious' blog reminded me that while the goal is important, it really is the journey toward health and greater happiness that keeps us all going. Her words of wisdom were exactly what I needed today after another week of lost inches, but no lost pounds.

My job is very outcome focused with tight deadlines and much accountability. I sometime... Wed, 29 May 2013 10:58:24 EST It works! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5367763 While I'm losing inches with my exercise and eating plan, I haven't been losing much weight. Got my annual tests back from the doctor yesterday and my cholesterol is normal! My last report three years ago my LDL was too high and the tri-g not much better. After only 6 weeks of working out and monitoring my diet, my LDL is normal and my HDL is excellent. This is good proof why losing weight shouldn't (and can't) be the only reward.

104 Sat, 25 May 2013 17:20:59 EST SparkPeople Reports http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5367067 Just when I think I've found all the nooks and crannies on the SparkPeople website, I find another. While I knew that the site had reports, I was surprised to see all the details that I could find out about my progress. At first I thought I could only get a report about my weight, but I was pleasantly surprised to see I could get a report about the inches I've lost on my waist, hips, thighs, etc. Fortunately I discovered this before entering all the information into a spreadsheet (which wa... Fri, 24 May 2013 20:58:26 EST 50 minutes of exercise a day? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5364080 Wow. I just read the blog post that most obese individuals need 250 minutes/week or 50 minutes/day of moderately intense exercise. I thought getting 30 minutes of exercise/day in (or most days anyway) was quite an accomplishment, however, now I know I must program in more time. As with most things I will need to give myself wiggle room when I'm unable to fit in the 50 minutes.

I'm now experimenting with the Fitness Class app on my iPad. There's quite a number of interesting wor... Wed, 22 May 2013 00:00:40 EST What's next? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5361132 I completed the 28-Day Boot Camp Challenge. This may be the first time I've ever set up an exercise routine and stuck with it for a whole month. I have to admit I wasn't sure that the SparkPeople concept was going to work, but it really has helped me continue on my path of improving fitness and losing weight. I do slip up every now and then, but now instead of berating myself, I take a deep breath and get back on track.

I read the article about setting measurable goals and am wo... Sun, 19 May 2013 13:28:18 EST Branching out http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5354506 I began Week 4 of the 28-day Bootcamp Challenge. I'm beginning to branch out by incorporating different video workouts into my routine. I'm using Fitness Challenge on the iPad and have found some excellent PumpOne routines. Did a 25 minute arm/dumbbell video on Saturday and loved it. Okay, I didn't quite do all 25 minutes, but I could the exercises and follow the video. In another couple of weeks I should be able to do all 25 minutes.

I'm experimenting with the Polar suggestio... Sun, 12 May 2013 22:55:40 EST Over 50 minutes of exercise! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5352031 Today was a great exercise day! I started with Nicole's 18-minute Body Sculpt video (which did kick by butt, but was fun). Then moved into Day 5 of the 28-day Bootcamp. Ended with a 22 minute slow walk on the treadmill. Might be sore tomorrow, but enjoyed it quite a bit.
315 Fri, 10 May 2013 11:06:55 EST Fell off the diet wagon http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5351457 A rushed, early morning without exercise, an all morning meeting, and a need to return to work quickly all led to a McDonald's drive-thru moment. Oh well, it happens.

Thu, 9 May 2013 22:03:02 EST Losing inches http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5350494 I've been doing weekly measuring since my weight loss isn't going quite as quickly as I'd hoped. I've lost over 3 inches when combined from around my body! I knew my clothes were fitting looser! I'm enjoying doing the strength training exercises and, with the help of the 28 Day Boot Camp Challenge, continue to be motivated to push myself with interval walking. Today I even extended my goal to go for a healthy BMI.
7 Thu, 9 May 2013 00:35:41 EST Eat more veggies? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5348972 I've started Week 3 of the 28 Day Bootcamp Challenge and to my alarm -- I now have to eat at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables each day! Okay, I have to admit that I am not the veggie loving human that I should be. I know they're good for you and I know they're important, but love them I do not.

So, I'm starting with the veggies that I do like -- carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower. My goal is to be sure that I have at least two servings in my lunch sack each day. I'm a... Tue, 7 May 2013 19:00:52 EST Bootcamp http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5345544 I've been enjoying the Bootcamp 28 day series. Tomorrow I begin Day 1 of Week 3. I've lost inches in my waist, hips and thighs. I feel stronger and I'm usually between 7,000 to 8,000 steps per day. I started at not making 5,000 steps per day. Perhaps by Week 4 I'll get even closer to 10,000!
224 Sat, 4 May 2013 18:37:54 EST Missed a day of exercise! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5343000 Life got in the way Wednesday and I didn't have time to do cardio. Weighed myself and gained 2 pounds! My clothes fit looser, I'm losing inches, but the scale is not my friend. I think I'm going to banish it for a month and see what happens. I've read the articles about portion sizes and think I'm following them. I will have to "double down" on this to make sure. I'm trying not to be depressed about this since it is such an extrinsic motivator.

198 Thu, 2 May 2013 09:21:29 EST Vision statement http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5341365 Read the Write your Vision Statement article today and thought I'd give it a go.

ET Vision Statement:
My goal is to be able to enjoy my life well into my 80's. Since I sleep a bit later, HR will do cardio first. Together we'll do the bootcamp videos and then I'll do my cardio. I think this will work.

Today we did the Day 1 Bootcamp cardio workout followed by Day 3 Bootcamp video. Then, I walked for 15 minutes.

Hip bursitis still kicking in, but not as bad.
381 Tue, 30 Apr 2013 11:40:02 EST 3 videos! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5339298 Inspiration comes when one needs it. Have been using interval walking as a cardio during the first week of the Boot Camp 28 day fitness challenge. Have loved the results, but my hip bursitis has not loved it so much. Woke up this morning trying to figure out what to do for cardio since I need to be able to walk! Decided to do a 12-minute low impact Pilates video (which I didn't enjoy) AND the 11 minute seated cardio with Coach Nicole (which I loved). Followed those two up with the Day 2 ... Mon, 29 Apr 2013 10:40:26 EST Secret to success? Technology! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5335443 I'm not new to the weight loss struggle. I've yo-yo'd most of my adult life. However, now that I'm in my 50's I want to be sure that I'm physically able to enjoy my 60's and retirement. I love to travel, explore new places, and ride my horses. I've noticed that during the last year I've been more stiff and sore. I can't have this!

So, I'm exercising. I really don't like exercise and certainly don't like dieting. This time, though, SparkPeople (and a variety of technology sol... Thu, 25 Apr 2013 15:13:35 EST Finally weight loss! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5335429 I've been at a plateau for almost two weeks and finally weighed in to find that I lost one pound. May not sound like much, but at least it was something! I'm on Day 5 of the 28 Day Bootcamp Challenge and although a bit sore, I'm loving it. The variety keeps me interested and motivated.

Thu, 25 Apr 2013 14:57:17 EST
