NIKKILEEG's SparkPeople Blog NIKKILEEG's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community The final concert We did our final concert for the winter 2013 season this afternoon. So much fun for me as a singer. The audience seemed to enjoy themselves. It was a great program with good variety. (BIG smile)

That's it for this evening. I'm tired and off to bed. Mon, 16 Dec 2013 00:01:09 EST I'm back. It has been several months since my last post. We came through the Rim Fire without any personal damage. The fire did a lot of damage to National Forest and National Park land. It will take years for recovery which makes me sad.

In order to help with recovery, and to try to mitigate future damage, seeds are being planted, roads are being shored up, erosion prevention work is being done and logging of damaged trees is ongoing. I spoke with a ranger recently who advised one of our ... Fri, 13 Dec 2013 18:21:03 EST Rim Fire Boy can things change fast! A week ago a fire started near our town. By Monday, it was clear it would be coming our way. We watched daily to see if it would encroach upon the residential areas near us or if the fire fighters would be able to keep it to the forest. I hear the Rim Fire is the biggest forest fire in the country right now. Between the air attack and the folks on the ground, hardly any structures were lost. It could have been so much worse. But – it isn’t really over yet. ... Sun, 25 Aug 2013 03:23:52 EST Return from Paradise Had a great bike trip in Montana. Got home and:

Signed the papers on Monday. Recorded on Tuesday. Spent all Wednesday moving stuff. Whirlwind week. Will still have more to move tomorrow and then we have to clean the place we’re leaving.

The new place is a third the size of the one we were renting so it will be an adjustment trying to figure out where things will go. We also want to paint the master bedroom a neutral color. Right now it is dark blue – all four walls. <B... Thu, 15 Aug 2013 14:33:09 EST Almost Ready Most of today was spent preparing and packing for my trip.

I seem to be very scatter brained these days. I put all the camping gear except the sleeping bag in one bag. Dan had filled the sleeping pad with air for me yesterday so we could make sure it didn’t leak. After the bag was packed, I saw the sleeping pad. It had lost air but was it from a leak or because the air inside got cool? Oh wait! I already packed a different sleeping pad that does not need to be blown up. Now I ... Wed, 17 Jul 2013 22:48:53 EST Good News on Follow Up Today I took Dan to the doctor for a follow up visit from the airplane accident. Doc says he did NOT have a spinal fracture after all. The ER doc erred. The radiologist says ‘no break.’ That was good news. Next is some physical therapy for his back.

I was able to get out for a longer ride yesterday. No takers to come with me. Turned out that was better as I went at my own pace and did well (yay). It felt good to not ride today. Tomorrow is my only other chance to get out for a ride... Tue, 16 Jul 2013 01:03:26 EST Random Thoughts Dan was feeling too good this morning and over did it. He’s resting now and it back on the muscle relaxer. I think he learned his lesson and will take it easier tomorrow.

Greg & Debbie are back from their vacation. Saw Greg a bit this morning. Good to have them home.

The aircam fuel tanks are not completely empty although Dan was able to get another 2 gallons out today. He keeps opening Rich’s hangar to try and get the fumes out. Can’t use a fan. Wish there were a w... Sat, 13 Jul 2013 23:23:32 EST What's up with that?!? I went out as planned and had to talk myself into continuing. "Well, I'll just
turn around at Tuolumne Trails." "OK, at the top of the big climb." "Might as
well go down to 120."

As I was coming back, I met Alan coming up the road! Attitude made an immediate adjustment - I turned around and rode with him out to 120. No feeling sorry for myself, no internal whining...just enjoyed the ride.

What's up with that?!? Fri, 12 Jul 2013 18:54:53 EST Recovery Although Dan has been moving slow, he was able to coordinate everyone to do the clean up of the airplane and the tree. Since that is done, he can take better care of himself by resting. He is slowing feeling better. I can tell as he is taking fewer of the pain killer and muscle relaxer pills. Turns out Rich had more to his broken back than we first thought. He’ll be in a brace. He had the surgery on his heel yesterday and that went well.

I’ve been playing nursemaid to Dan but was... Fri, 12 Jul 2013 00:29:49 EST Sudden Turn! 6/29 - Got out for an early ride but turned around early as it was getting hot. Did almost 20 miles but still felt cheated – should’ve been longer. The forecast is for more hot weather all week – bleh.

Fell asleep on the couch and woke up around 12:30pm. Good thing I woke up then – I wanted to just keep sleeping and sleeping and sleeping.

I’m so glad we have air conditioning. It was almost 100 degrees outside today but I was comfortable.

7/4 – Happy Independen... Mon, 8 Jul 2013 15:57:20 EST Continuing Dan's Training The weather is not cooperating for Dan’s training rides. We had rain Monday and Tuesday. We did get out on Wednesday but it got up into the 80s. The next ride is for tomorrow and it is supposed to be HOT. Good thing we are leaving early but we may still have to cut it short.

We did a quick trip to see Julia’s new place yesterday/today. Got to see Jenn and Sam for a short hike yesterday. Tried to connect with Jess for lunch today but that didn’t work (sad face).

Going thr... Fri, 28 Jun 2013 19:57:47 EST This 'n That Cyndy put out a ride for today. Bill was supposed to come but didn’t make it. So, it was just us two. Did 20 miles with some tough climbs. Made it back in two hours so did well.

Went to the Eco Summit in town for a bit today and heard a speaker talking about water. We all need to conserve as much as possible for it to continued lasting as needed. The more we waste and pollute, the sooner its gone…

Bob is continuing to bug me about hiking on Thursdays. I half committed to... Sat, 22 Jun 2013 22:29:33 EST and now for the rest of the week Attended my first training as WW leader on Wednesday. It is all so new and rather confusing. My biggest fear at this time is whether I will be good at encouraging the members in a way that will inspire them. So much to learn!

While I was working, Dan and Steve did the ride I’d scheduled for the day. I am so glad Dan is still riding even without me to goad him on! If he keeps this up, he will be ready for the tour (happy, happy).

Thursday we went to Sonora. One of the cho... Sat, 22 Jun 2013 00:17:21 EST Father's Day Gift Saturday was a resting day for me. Dan and Julie went on another motorcycle ride. He took her around and entered Yosemite on Hwy 140 and then came back on Hwy 120. That is a beautiful ride. Dan said the only mistake was going on a weekend.

Yesterday I rode with Debbie & Greg on one of our favorite loops. (Cherry Lake Rd/Mather Rd/Evergreen Rd/Hwy 120) It was Debbie’s first time doing the whole route. She did great. Total distance: 30 miles. Total climbing: 2900+ feet.

D... Mon, 17 Jun 2013 20:44:18 EST Birthday/Father's Day Rode on back of motorcycle with Dan yesterday morning. So tired at one point, I closed my eyes. I had to force them back open as I wanted to go to sleep. Made it home safe.

This sounds like a complaint but I don’t know what to do with myself. Guess I’ll take a nap…

Enjoyed a great ride with seven, count ’em-seven! other riders today. This was great. It isn’t often we get that many people together at one time. Only bad part was Debbie got a flat near the end of the ride. ... Fri, 14 Jun 2013 23:41:24 EST Busy Day in the Valley Lost another two pounds – woohoo!!! I ate a small breakfast and then went for a 12 mile bike ride before the weigh in. I went way over my points for the week so am really surprised with this result. I’m guessing it was the consistent exercise that paid off.

Dan and Carol did the golf ball drop without incident today. All their practice must’ve helped. Now they can be professional golf ball droppers. Don’t know if they sold all 500 golf balls but it definitely made money for the ... Wed, 12 Jun 2013 14:32:50 EST Not a Very Hot Day Here are some pictures from Dan’s flight in the helicopter.

The difference in temperature today vs Saturday is amazing! We may have to add a blanket tonight and we were baking just two days ago. Since we’ve only lived here for a few years, I don’t... Tue, 11 Jun 2013 01:03:09 EST Preparing Dan We seems to be getting into a routine for Dan to get him ready for the bike tour in July. Three rides this week. Next week we need to work on adding distance.

I went out by myself early (before it got hot) and did 21 miles. I was hoping for 22. What an inspiring area to live!

Helped Alan hang Ernie yesterday. Ernie looks pretty impressive in Alan’s front room. I should’ve taken a picture. Maybe later. The reward was a steak dinner – pretty good for a few minutes work. ... Sat, 8 Jun 2013 19:03:16 EST A Good Wednesdy Drove into Sonora today for a job fair at the Weight Watchers facility. Ended up speaking with the team manager for about an hour. I think she wants to hire me. I have to go through quite a bit of training but they will pay me for that and my mileage. It’d be great if that turned into a full time position (highly unlikely but who knows?)

When I got home, there was a message from Debbie about a mid-day bike ride. I called to let her know why I didn’t make it. Turns out, she didn’t m... Wed, 29 May 2013 23:44:55 EST Memorial Day weekend 2013 5/26/13
Greg & Bill in Greg’s RV4, Dan & I in the 701. Went over Camp Mather and got pictures of the music festival crowd. Then we flew over Hetch Hetchy and got pictures of the reservoir, Wapama Fall and Kolana Peak. Ended our tour going over Yosemite Valley – saw Half Dome, El Capitan, Glacier Point…

<img src="http:... Tue, 28 May 2013 14:03:21 EST Riding Yesterday I found a riding partner after my own heart. We started out with the idea of a three hour ride but as we went along, he said, “I’d like to go to Mather and see the music festival.” Me too! So, we did. Total time was over four hours (great!) and we got in over 50 miles. I felt so good when I got home!!!

Today Dan and I went on a motorcycle ride with Charlie. Rode to Cherry Lake and came home through Tuolumne City. Mostly a nice ride but a good portion of the road betwe... Sat, 25 May 2013 23:19:37 EST Update Monday

We got up and rode our bikes to “Old’s Gym” this morning. Wayne was there using an exercise dvd. So we tried a few of those exercises and worked on the machines. Then we rode up and down the taxiway several times. Total time about 60 minutes. It is a start.

Even with my bike ride Saturday, I gained weight this past week. Gotta behave myself this week as I do NOT want to have to lose the same weight again and again!!!

Looked at another house this morning... Fri, 24 May 2013 00:32:36 EST End of Week Thursday
Looks like the house deal is not going to go through. sigh

We went with our realtor to look at some houses again today. There is one that I like but Dan wasn’t interested. It is inside the Association which means we cannot afford to pay as much for the house. Catch 22. Gotta keep waiting for a house outside the Association in our price range. Not even sure we can qualify for a small loan.

I went to the sectional today. There is still so much I could impro... Sun, 19 May 2013 19:23:08 EST Mom's Day-good! Had a nice mother’s day weekend. Saturday was a picnic at Garin Park. Lots of family and friends. Nice sycamore shade tree kept the day cool. In the evening, my girls took me out to dinner. Ate too much.

Sunday I was still so full, I hardly ate anything. Spent the afternoon with J&J – perfect!

Turns out the seller didn’t just toss our offer, he came back with a counter offer. So we sent off a counter, counter offer today. We’ll see what happens.
Mon, 13 May 2013 18:55:26 EST UP! and down... At rehearsal, I was chosen to do a mini-solo for one of the songs. I am pleased. It has been a long, long time since I’ve done that. I hope I don’t get nervous for the actual program – it always makes the voice shaky.

We made an offer on a house yesterday. Today we got word from the owner’s agent that the owner probably will not accept it. Gotta wait to get the official word from the owner. I think we’ve already accepted that we won’t get it. Next!
Thu, 9 May 2013 00:45:46 EST MMRR I’m back home but today was another great cycling day. I met my friends for the Monday Morning Recovery Ride around Fremont. I did over 37 miles and averaged 14.9mph. It felt real good to ride on the flats!

I was able to get several ‘chores’ done while in the bay area but I still need to get my super 8 movies converted to DVD. Maybe next time I’m down there. We’re headed back that way next weekend for Sam’s family & friends picnic.

G&D gave me a place to crash this wee... Mon, 6 May 2013 22:21:37 EST Excellent Adventure Friday evening, I spent with Jessica and Sam. We had a traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner. It was good. Then Jessica made a frozen banana dessert which was good too. Next I went to G&D’s house where they put me up for the night.

Saturday morning I was back in Fremont to join my friends on an Excellent Adventure. It was too. We went almost 50 miles through Livermore, out Tesla and Corral Hollow into Tracy. It was hot as we climbed to the high point of the day but after t... Mon, 6 May 2013 01:10:22 EST The Rest of the Week Joined the motorcycle gang Tuesday morning. What a fantastic day for a ride. We ended up in Twain Harte for breakfast. Got home in plenty of time to get to rehearsal. Good rehearsal – still lots for me to do – the brain just isn’t working as well as it used to so more work ahead.

The guys getting ready to depart from Twain Harte:

Wednesday Dan & I went over to the new gym in the neighborhood. Som... Mon, 6 May 2013 00:36:35 EST weekend adventures It was a busy weekend for us. Saturday was the Mariposa Air Fair. It was a nice day but the event itself was very poorly executed. Several listed activities didn’t happen. The PA system didn’t work well. Did see several folks from PML there.

Sunday Greg and I met at Dori’s Tea Cottage and waited for my bay area buddies to show up. We were there at 9 and no riders showed up until close to 10:30. So we had a relaxing visit while waiting. It was interesting watching all the vehic... Mon, 29 Apr 2013 16:14:49 EST Groveland - Mariposa - Yosemite: What A Day! Last night was not a good rest. Didn’t get to sleep until after 2am – yuck! When the phone rang at 7:15, it was probably a good thing as it got me out of bed.

The phone call was to let us know there would be a group motorcycle ride today. We went. Another fantastic day in the neighborhood.

Just inside the entrance on Hwy 140 (Yosemite Nat'l Park):

Shot this picture looking back while on ... Thu, 25 Apr 2013 23:15:57 EST Improvement! Dan is much better. He actually went out for a motorcycle ride yesterday. YAY! The new antibiotics are working.

While he was on the motorcycle, I was on the bicycle. Alan D and I rode from Miller Ranch to O’Shaughnessy Dam and back. What a perfect day to be outdoors. He is on a different antibiotic and it is working much better than the last one. Although he's not 100%, he is definitely improving - HOORAY! Sun, 21 Apr 2013 12:20:51 EST waiting around Life is falling back into a normal pattern except Dan has been sick all week. We called his doctor’s office today. Doc is out but nurse said come in on Friday unless Dan gets worse – then take him to ER. Couple of things I’m concerned about – he hasn’t eaten hardly anything for three days and his fever is not going away. At least he is sleeping right now.

Today was a waiting day. I had to wait for the training nurse to show up at our house. She was supposed to be here around 11:30-... Wed, 17 Apr 2013 23:29:12 EST "Free" Day 4-6-13 Saturday

Today we woke up when our bodies wanted to wake up. So nice! Meandered down to breakfast at the hotel. Saw a few folks from our group. Ken and Linda came by and said if there was a group of at least six, the hotel would give everyone a ride to wherever they wanted to go in town.

After we ate, Dan stayed and spoke with Larry Jobe while I got on the computer to check email and work on yesterday’s blog. Dan came up and said there is a group going to u... Sat, 6 Apr 2013 21:15:08 EST The Great Wall & China Aviation Museum 4-5-13 Saturday

This morning we were up early (4:45am) in order to get ready for a 6:00 bus ride to the Great Wall. We went to BaDaLing area to get to the Wall. Elevation is about 1,600 feet. As we left the flatlands for the mountains, it was foggy! When we actually got to BaDaLing, the fog started to lift but it was still not a very clear day.

In 221BC China was unified by Qin Shihuang (first emperor of the first dynasty), the man who had the terra cotta warrior army ... Sat, 6 Apr 2013 20:56:33 EST Tienanmen Square and Forbidden City 4-4-13 Thursday

Because we moved to a new room last night, we did not get the ‘wake up’ call this morning. I got up to find my watch and it was 7:30! We needed to be at the bus by 8:00 so raced around getting ready. Confusion reigned as we tried to make sure we had everything we needed. As we got to the elevator, Dan realized he’d left his inhaler in the room.

With everything we needed, we took the elevator to the lobby. We still had five minutes so scuttled over to the ... Sat, 6 Apr 2013 20:23:46 EST Summer Palace 4-3-13 Wednesday

Wake up call was 4:30 but the power went off in the hotel at 3:00. An emergency light came on which woke Dan and then me. Neither one of us got any more rest. Dan said, “I wonder if we’ll get the wake up call if the power is out.” That’s all I needed to keep me awake. We finally got up about 4:10, showered and dressed. By then, the power had come back on. Then the wake up call came through.

We did get a leisurely breakfast today which was better tha... Whichever, it restricted the views.

Today we visited a ‘kindergarten.’ It is actually for children from three to six so is different from my concept of kindergarten. The kids were a... As we were driving and talking, she asked where I lived. When I told her, she asked if I knew Kay. Yes. Kay goes to my church. BINGO! That’s where we’d met before.
