NEWSGIRL2177's SparkPeople Blog NEWSGIRL2177's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community 2013 recap i just happened to look at my Sparkpage and caught a glimpse of my goals for 2013. Now that the year is almost up, let's see how I did. I will say that 2013 turned out much differently than I thought it would in January. Isn't that always the way?

Goals and hopes for myself in 2013:

* I'm going to run my first 10K and keep running 5Ks, which will help me reach my annual fitness minutes goal, too.

Wellllll……that didn't happen! I ran a couple of 5Ks, but I di... Fri, 20 Dec 2013 20:05:14 EST Reminder for myself I read this in a blog and it struck a chord. A big one.

* Change your vocabulary. Refuse to use excuse language. Resist the urge to “explain” to yourself or others why certain progress isn’t happening, or why you are limited. Decide that you won’t talk about a problem unless it revolves around the solution you are formulating for it.
Mon, 7 Oct 2013 19:25:32 EST Frustrating workout The current Kaia FIT session’s theme is “Free to Be Me,” which has an emphasis on letting go of limitations and focusing on playtime for grown-ups. I love this idea, in theory.

The first week, we practiced handstands. I love this because, even though I can’t kick up to a handstand or do a free-standing one yet, I can walk up the wall and begin to move my hands closer to the wall. I didn’t think I’d be able to do this at my size, but once I let go of my doubt, I found I could do mo... Mon, 12 Aug 2013 12:25:58 EST I can’t see it, but I can feel it I’ve finally built up some momentum and I’m starting to get results.

I’m still doing Kaia FIT, a women’s-only bootcamp-type program. We recently did a 6-week Brik, which is basically a more intensive session than the 5-week sessions we normally do. While I didn’t commit fully to the diet portion of the program, I made it to every workout (5 days a week) during Brik. I wake up at 4 am to be in Carlsbad by 5 am, and there is a huge difference between doing that 3 days a week and 5 d... Tue, 9 Jul 2013 13:21:24 EST Conquering mountains and battling fear I climbed a mountain last weekend. Cowles Mountain is the highest peak in San Diego, and it’s been on my radar since I moved here in 2009. I missed an opportunity to climb it a couple of years ago with some San Diego Sparkpeeps, but I kept it on my “adventure list” (with WOLFKITTY). See her blog about this hike here:

urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=5401908

Here’s the thing: I have an irrational fear of falling, and I’ve let that ... Wed, 26 Jun 2013 13:48:50 EST Springing Into Action challenge: Superfoods This week's challenge was to incorporate 3 of the 9 superfoods, according to

I saw a big bunch of asparagus at the store, so I knew it was destined for my grill (and mah belly). I don't follow recipes too often, so I basically just chopped the asparagus into bite-sized pieces along with red bell peppers, zucchini, and some salt-free seasoning. I threw this into a grill basket and put it on the grill for about 15 minutes. The veggies get really bright when they... Fri, 19 Apr 2013 16:30:50 EST On the wall (photo) This morning's workout is kind of a blur by now. We were in teams of 3, with 2 people on either end of the room doing different exercises and the third person doing a traveling exercise. Then we rotated.

It's seriously a blur of mountain climbers, squat hops, a bazillion push-ups, tricep dips, broad jumps, jumping jacks, planks, traveling side planks, etc. I went in this morning telling myself not to let those negative thoughts get too far this time. Monday's workout was tough, an... Wed, 17 Apr 2013 11:57:49 EST Jumping and I do not get along One setback should not derail me or erase all of the hard work I do during my workout. I know this. I hear the words in my head, understand them ... and then ignore them.

This morning, one of the first exercises we did in class was to jump with both feet onto a gymnastics landing mat. This big cushy mat is only 8 inches high. I really dislike jumping (it's hard! and it makes me tired immediately!), so I know it's something I need to work on consistently so I can improve. I've been... Wed, 10 Apr 2013 16:10:53 EST Double Peak hike and today's workout Hooray! WOLFKITTY and I finally checked off an item that's been on our adventure list for more than a year. We hiked to the tiny trees on Double Peak, which is in a park near where we live.

We would always stare up at those two tiny trees and say, We're hiking up there one day. But it took a while for that one day to arrive. It did on Saturday!

We started out early and hiked up the trail that zigzags through a park, then a neighborhood, then some brush, and finally up a... Mon, 8 Apr 2013 14:51:39 EST Relaxing yoga? Um, no! Friday is yoga/pilates day at Kaia FIT, and while that sounds like it would be relaxing, it's totally not!

Our coach wants to get our heart rates way up before moving into yoga, and each time, the routine is different. Today, we started with 10 minutes or so of an AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) circuit. We did 10 reps of each exercise:

* Squat thrusts (almost like a burpee)
* Russian twists
* Squats with 10-lb medicine ball
* Push-ups (I'm on my knees... Fri, 5 Apr 2013 14:29:10 EST Complaints and setting goals Last week was stressful for me. Work stuff finally picked up, but so did both of my freelance projects! I like staying busy, but that was a bit much after a long period of things trickling in. When I have too much going on, I feel like I'm not doing a good job on any one thing. I can focus really well, but I'm not used to racing the clock anymore and it's distracting. How did I do that every day for over 10 years in newspapers?! Anyway, my mom added a huge mess to my plate to clean up, and I'... Tue, 2 Apr 2013 18:25:34 EST Beachy weekend I've been going crazy with the beach walks lately, but I can't help it. I love the ocean and I love that I can drive 20 minutes and enjoy it!

This weekend was a little different. I decided to sleep in (til 6 am!) on Saturday, so most of the day was spent running errands and doing stuff at home. One errand was to pick up a jump rope at a sporting goods store. During my Kaia workouts, jumping rope has been a big challenge. So I wanted to have one so I could improve on my own at home.... Mon, 25 Mar 2013 12:20:59 EST Today's workout I'm posting this workout mostly so I can remember what all I did in this morning's Kaia FIT class. But still, I know I forgot some things!

The instructor had us partner up, so almost all exercises were done with or facing another person.

Warmup:
Jump rope across the floor, 10 speed jumps x 5

Circuit 1:
Snowboarders (squat, touch floor, jump 180 degrees, touch floor)
Paddlers with resistance bands (link bands w/partner, pulse straight arms down a... Wed, 20 Mar 2013 19:14:43 EST Kaia workout and beach pics "You're not going to die, so you might as well keep going."
"Yes, it's hard, but you're doing it."
"I can't bend my arms that way, but I can do it this way. And I can keep going."
"OK, OK. I can cry later. Right now, I have to do 2 more."

This is a sampling of the thoughts running through my head this morning during my first official Kaia FIT class. It’s a women’s-only boot camp/Crossfit-type program, and they just opened a location in my area. I went to a free demo ... Mon, 18 Mar 2013 14:28:41 EST Beach walk Early Sunday morning, I headed to the beach with my husband and WOLFKITTY. She and I had done a beach workout in the past and kept talking about how we should go again. While we didn't do a bootcamp like we'd done previously, we did get a nice walk in.

I'm always game for going to the beach! And it was a cool morning, so there weren't too many people out yet. We walked along the beach, and with the low... Wed, 6 Mar 2013 11:23:08 EST Wave Runners: Springing into Action – Vision Collage This week's challenge: Create a vision board that represents what you want out of this challenge.....what you want to accomplish during the spring and where you want to be and WHO you want to be when summer approaches.

I've avoided making a vision collage for quite a while. I totally get what they're about and I can see how they'd be useful, but I couldn't quite see myself doing one. I've had more than a couple of friends tell me, "You don't give up details about yourself easily. ... Tue, 5 Mar 2013 23:43:51 EST Wave Runners challenge: Workout game This was challenging! I see a lot of TV-themed games online, but I've cut down on my TV watching quite a bit lately. I do go to work every day, though, so that's the theme of my workout game.

**************
WORKIN' IT

Every incoming email = March in place 1 minute

Every outgoing email = Drink water

Complete a task = 20 squats

Every phone call = 25 wall pushups

Every hour = Take a lap around the floor

Bathroom b... Tue, 26 Feb 2013 16:49:46 EST Wave Runners: Springing into Action – About Me I don’t like writing about me! But I do like challenges, so here goes.

I’m Heather, I just turned 36 (how did that happen?!), I’m married to the best person I know, and I have a very spoiled cat, Missy.

I’m a technical writer now, which means I write (boring) manuals on how to install and remove parts on an airplane. I used to be a journalist and I ran the copy desk at a few newspapers aroun... Mon, 18 Feb 2013 13:13:50 EST Best gifts ever! My mom sent me a package with some belated birthday gifts yesterday. While my husband looked on with a confused look on his face, I squealed in delight. BEST GIFTS EVER!!!!

The items themselves are pretty ordinary and not the greatest quality, but they carry huge sentimental value to me. And I can't believe my mom was able to pry them away from my grandma!

First, a very old spoon. I remember ... Fri, 8 Feb 2013 10:40:04 EST A glimmer of Wonder Woman This weekend was pretty great fitness-wise. On Saturday, my husband and I walked the beach in Encinitas. It was a beautiful day – sunny, 75 degrees, a light breeze – just try to stop me from going to the beach! My husband has been nursing an injured foot for a couple of weeks, so it was a short walk, but it was great to get out there and feel the sun and the surf (in January!).

The next day, I got up e... Tue, 22 Jan 2013 16:21:52 EST Working it at work It only took me a year and 3 months, but I finally did it: I took a break and I took a walk. It's such a simple thing, but it's been such an obstacle for me to overcome.

OK, I already know this isn't good or right or whatever, but this is how it is: I rarely take breaks at work, including lunch. I work 9-hour days, so extending that to even 9.5 hours is unappealing to me. My commute isn't bad, about 20 minutes, but I just feel in general that I don't have as much time as I would li... Wed, 16 Jan 2013 15:59:27 EST Distance tracking 2012 I always forget about the reports you can run on SparkPeople! They're super helpful when you want to take a close look at what you're doing (or not doing). I thought I'd take a look at how many miles I covered in 2012, so I ran a report to see my distance over the year.

Here are the miles I covered last year:

Jan: 11.64
Feb: 32.43
March: 28.71
April: 14.18
May: 23.59
June: 27.98
July: 9.32
Aug: 7.05
Sept: 31.69
Oct: 16.26 <B... Sat, 5 Jan 2013 18:36:41 EST Active vacation Happy new year, Sparkpeeps! I'm actually pretty excited about 2013. Maybe it's because things are going fairly well these days. It inspires optimism. I hope the new year has good things in store for all of us.

I recently took a short vacation, my first in quite a long time. My husband and I went to Wichita, KS, just after Christmas to visit his family. It was a quick trip, but we made the best of the time we had with family. It also marked the first time I purposefully had an acti... Fri, 4 Jan 2013 14:02:33 EST I stumped the dietitian! In my new quest to make my health a priority, I asked my doctor for a referral to a nutritionist recently. Today was my first appointment.

The woman was really nice and she listened to everything I had to say. I made sure to be really honest with her about everything I eat now and what I ate in the past. She made a ton of notes about my exercise and sleep habits, as well as my stress level and even how much I drink (alcohol). I felt like she was really trying to get a whole pictur... Fri, 9 Nov 2012 21:59:37 EST Nov. 6-8: Being thankful Nov. 6: Election Day! I’m truly thankful for the right to cast a vote for whomever my heart desires. It wasn’t that long ago that women weren’t able to vote, so I take pride in going to the polls and letting my voice be heard (although I rarely talk politics with anyone!). I was a journalist for several years and Election Night was by far the most exciting night of the year. It was chaos, fueled on adrenaline and pizza. Every year since I’ve been out of the newsroom, I have had withdrawal. I ... Thu, 8 Nov 2012 18:41:03 EST Nov. 3-5: Being grateful Nov. 3: I’m thankful for an adventurous palate and the friends who long ago exposed me to new foods. I remember at 18 a first date with Eric, who took me to an Indian restaurant. I had never tried Indian food before, so I was nervous. I don’t remember what I tried that night, but I liked it a lot! Months later, I was trying sushi for the first time during a trip to Pittsburgh with my college roommate. Now, I absolutely love trying new dishes and cuisines. I have a more adventurous palate than... Mon, 5 Nov 2012 12:47:40 EST Starting over, being grateful, and a new challenge I haven’t been running in a while, partly because my foot still hurts after just walking a few miles and partly because I’m just not doing it. I have the super-awesome Iron Girl event coming up in less than 2 weeks, and I’m trying to look at it positively.

My plan was to run the Iron Girl 10K. Now, I’ll participate in the 5K instead, and I hope to do maybe half walking and half running. We’ll see how it goes. I’m trying to get past my initial disappointment with myself and look at... Fri, 2 Nov 2012 12:28:49 EST New shoes will have to wait No more running (or even walking) for me this week. I’ve been sidelined with foot problems, likely some form of plantar fasciitis. It’s so painful!

I was SO excited last weekend: I retired my first real pair of running shoes! When I started the Couch to 5K program in August 2011, I bought a cheap pair of Nike running shoes that felt OK and ran in those. Then I went to a local running store, where they analyzed my feet, pressure points, stride, etc. I learned so much, including that... Fri, 28 Sep 2012 15:42:47 EST Fighting a new battle It's been a while since I've blogged. I'm on Spark every day, lurking, reading blogs, silently cheering people on. I'll post a comment once in a while, but mostly I just haven't wanted to interact with anyone. I don’t have a real good reason for that. I love that Spark is a community of (mostly) like-minded people and that sense of community is what keeps me here. Anyway…

It’s been a hard couple of months for me, healthwise. I’ve been trying to make my health a priority by visiting... Thu, 27 Sep 2012 12:25:52 EST Quote to remember Running is not a private activity. People are watching. Show someone what it's like to want something.

Marc Parent, Runner's World columnist

---------------------------------

This quote resonated with me this morning. After I overslept and skipped my run. Gah!
Wed, 30 May 2012 11:37:15 EST Note to self: Oh yeah... When I get up early and sweat to things like this:

My skin feels amazing (kinda sorta) like this:

And for the rest of the day, I'm like this:

Now, if I could just remember this when I'm feeling lazy....
Thu, 19 Jan 2012 11:51:59 EST Renewal I don’t make New Year’s resolutions. I haven’t done this since I was in my late teens. But I can’t help seeing the new year (and each new month) as a opportunity for renewal and goal setting.

The past few months have been pretty stressful for me, and I’ve been hanging on to SparkPeople by a thread in several respects. I really began using SP in January 2011, when I got an email about a 30-day SP bootcamp. I decided I would try it, because it was only 30 days and I was out of work,... Sun, 1 Jan 2012 21:25:15 EST Walking through molasses This is how I feel like I’m moving through my life at this point. Most days, I feel aimless, stressed out, and unproductive. I don’t want this blog to be a big b*tchfest about how stressed I am, but that’s really all that’s going on with me.

When I was younger, I liked roller coasters. They freaked me out and thrilled me at the same time. I liked the anticipation of the drop while dreading the actual sensation of falling. Now, I feel like I’m constantly on a ride that I can’t seem... Sun, 11 Dec 2011 20:17:24 EST I'm a runner now (long LONG blog) I started running Aug. 2 with the Couch to 5K program. While I was training, I kept a private journal so I could look back when I finished and see how things went. Here’s a quick (OK, not that quick) look at my journey:

Week 1: “Running is hard! I can barely run for one minute without feeling like I’m going to die or my heart is going to explode out of my chest.”

Week 1 Part 2: WOLFKITTY joins the party and I’m SO THANKFUL she does. I repeat the first week, so we’re both... Tue, 1 Nov 2011 22:23:18 EST INSPIRE Challenge #3: Podcasts This week's challenge was to listen to two different podcasts and let everyone know what you learned from them.

I knew I wanted one of them to be the Jillian Michaels podcast because I was curious about it. I watch the Biggest Loser and I like her, despite all of the yelling and craziness that often goes with her. As for the second podcast, that took a little more time and effort to figure out. Honestly, I thought about cheating and using the couch to 5K podcast I already listen t... Fri, 19 Aug 2011 21:55:53 EST DIY Challenge finale! This challenge was certainly a challenge for me -- and I loved it! My goals were always right there in my face, where I need them. And even though I didn't lose much weight, I gained a few other things along the way. Here are the results:

My Starting Weight: 257
My Finishing Weight: 255 (depending on the day....but whatever)

Four (or more) other things I will be measuring during this challenge & their current stats: (body measurements, race times, crunch max, jeans... Tue, 16 Aug 2011 12:40:38 EST INSPIRE Challenge #2: Goals met! Whew! This week was really interesting with this challenge. The main challenge was to do 2 yoga sessions, and I did the second class this morning.

I'm not too bendy, so I'm always a tiny bit fearful of yoga classes, but I'm also really motivated to see what all my body can accomplish in yoga practice--and get smaller along the way (I hope). The class today was taught by an instructor I've taken Zumba with previously. She's awesome. Her energy is great, and she pushes her students t... Fri, 12 Aug 2011 23:57:56 EST August CSA goodies It's that time again: my bi-weekly CSA pickup.

Here's a look at the haul:

I got yellow and green beans, two heads of romaine, zucchini, strawberries, heirloom and yellow cherry tomatoes, kale, turnips, avocado, okra, and cilantro. And I bought a small watermelon for the hubs to snack on.

Turnips and okra are totally new to me. Eek! I'm excited to try them, but sorta anxious becaus... Wed, 10 Aug 2011 20:40:53 EST INSPIRE Challenge #2: Yoga and changing things up Our main challenge this week is to do yoga twice. I took a yoga class with WOLFKITTY on Sunday morning and we're going to take another one later in the week. I wanted to take 2 yoga classes each week anyway, so this will be good for me! I feel like I really need to work on my flexibility and hopefully that will help me in other areas.

The bonus challenge this week is to do 3 things differently than normal. After thinking about my options, I decided to make this a real challenge fo... Tue, 9 Aug 2011 20:12:06 EST I'm running...jogging...OK, I'm shuffling Today was my second day of the Couch to 5K program. I'm just happy I made it this far! Yeah, I said Day 2. I've never made it past the first day the other handful of times I started. But this time, I'm in it to win it. I'm determined to take as long as my body needs to get used to it, so I might have to repeat training weeks, but I'm OK with that. I'm not quitting this time.

I decided to do the program outside and not on the treadmill. I know it's supposed to be easier on the tre... Mon, 1 Aug 2011 00:34:09 EST I did it! 10,000 mins. I'm pretty excited about this! Today, I reached (no, actually I exceeded) 10,000 fitness minutes since I started in January. I can't tell you how happy this makes me.

When I started, I think my original, Spark-assigned goal was 3,550 or something like that. At that time, that number seemed HUGE and nearly impossible to reach. Well, I hit that number pretty quickly, so I adjusted my yearly goal to 17,000 minutes. I knew it would be a long, hard, sweaty year trying to reach that num... Thu, 28 Jul 2011 19:53:46 EST July CSA goodies I have belonged to a CSA for about 2 years and I absolutely love it! For those who don't know what that is, CSA stands for community-supported agriculture. I basically buy a share of a farm's crops and I get a big box of fresh fruits and vegetables every two weeks. It's the perfect amount for me and my husband, and I have been eating much better since I joined the program. And because I live in San Diego, it's a year-round thing that just keeps on giving. Sat, 23 Jul 2011 14:45:01 EST Flashback got the better of me I had an unexpected moment of emotional overload during my workout this morning. I really don’t like surprises.

This morning, I was nervous but excited to meet a SparkBuddy, HIKINGSD, for a step class. It’s been 15 years since I’ve done a step class, so I thought it would be good to mix things up and try something (almost) new.
