NATHELESS's SparkPeople Blog NATHELESS's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Happy Monday Had a great last week or so in the activity department. Yard work (lots), a bike ride, trampolining, and walking. Since last weekend, only one day under 10k steps.

Feeling ready for more for today and the week ahead!

Need my optimism today, as it looks like it'll be a rainy one. But, as I have discovered this winter, I can walk a lot of steps indoors. And it's about time I did some less-functional strength training w/the kettlbells, instead of lifting rocks and bricks. Mon, 27 Apr 2015 07:42:02 EST Faced with adversity, I bought new clothes I spend so much time tugging at my compression stockings that I decided a change in wardrobe was warranted. It was either that or wear sweatpants all the time.

I went colorful, very much so. Another departure. Two of my new dresses could even be called pink. Whoa!

Tue, 21 Apr 2015 19:15:39 EST My commitment Gotta take the time, and make it a regular feature, to reach my goals.

Kettlebells, I will let you work your magic on me.

Fri, 3 Apr 2015 12:01:45 EST 2015, so far a much better year Last year was quite tough. Health challenges and the loss of a dear friend made the latter half of the year very hard.

This year, I am highly motivated to take better care of myself than I had been managing for the last couple years. And I gotta say, I have been kicking ass and taking names since January 1.

Onward! Wed, 4 Feb 2015 20:31:29 EST Back to basics Had some health challenges this summer, but feeling better lately and ready to get back to work on taking good care of my one and only body.

Picked up my kettlebells this morning for the first time in months - Onward! Thu, 11 Sep 2014 10:06:02 EST 5 for 5 Was active every weekday this week.

Got a 70 minute walk this morning before work. Made it back just as it got a little wetter...

The weekend is entirely up to me, and the weather is looking warm, so I'm going to continue my active streak outdoors.

That sedentary life I was living was just no good. Fri, 9 May 2014 11:18:50 EST Another good start Swung my kettlebells for the first time since March, I think.

Hurrah! Onward! Thu, 8 May 2014 11:51:00 EST And another day Walked 70 minutes this morning before work.

Liking the morning exercise, for sure.

Glorious weather is helping.

67 Wed, 7 May 2014 11:53:15 EST Daily activity got out for a walk with a friend last night for an hour

and this morning before work for half an hour

good good good Tue, 6 May 2014 13:44:50 EST Two months later - summer roll season I've been good with art, and bad with my health n' fitness, the last few weeks.

Time to get my butt moving, on the regular.

Have had a great food weekend...

Starting with fresh rolls on Friday

And ending with a veg... Sun, 4 May 2014 22:14:14 EST No such thing as spare time Trying to make sure I do good creative work and also still get my exercise daily.

Sometimes it seems like I don't have enough time for both - but I need to just take that time. The trick is to prioritize the correct things, those that really matter. Too often, I fritter away time reading stupid stuff on the internet, when I could be making better use of that time.

Happy this morning because I got in a full hour of stone carving (in 20 minute intervals) AND 20 minutes on ... Tue, 4 Mar 2014 11:05:25 EST new week, newish month March has been an active month so far -

I went cross-country skiing for the first time in decades on Saturday, and ignored my sore bits the next day to get my first kettlebell session of the month.

I added a set of sets to my workout for March, to increase the intensity.

Onward! Mon, 3 Mar 2014 12:46:34 EST all better My illness left me slothful, but I've decided to give myself a kick in the pants to get back to being more active.

I have been active with some craft work. That's what's been occupying my morning exercise time. Gotta do both, that's all.

41

Onward! Wed, 26 Feb 2014 17:21:06 EST And a bit better again Much less congested and sore today, and went for a walk (by way of accomplishing an errand) in the suddenly warm air.

So, hurrah for all that!

Need to get back to kettlebells. May try to pep-talk myself into them this evening, but if not, then tomorrow morning.

Spring is coming.

126 Thu, 20 Feb 2014 17:42:40 EST Bit better Ready to return to some activity. There's fresh snow i should take a swipe at, so i can get a little fresh air with my functional fitness.

211 Wed, 19 Feb 2014 08:34:39 EST Bump in the road Started feeling ill on Friday and now have a cold that made the weekend not-so-marvelous.

Still sick this morning, but in a good mood. I had a happy weekend, even though many of my original plans got cancelled.

Did some snow shoveling over the weekend, but no other exercise.

It was my birthday, so I had some treats. I made a cake that naturally portions into small, elegant slices... Though that was not why I chose the recipe.

<img src="http://phot... Mon, 17 Feb 2014 07:11:43 EST and more progress So, Friday is my official weigh-in day and I'm happy to report a sudden drop on the scale gives me a loss for this week of 2.4 pounds.

It's been a good week overall - keeping up with (or exceeded) my goals for exercise and food journaling.

I feel as though I am really on a roll now.

Onward! Fri, 14 Feb 2014 10:11:20 EST progress Was rather excited this morning. I'm at that stage of getting in shape where I've begun to start seeing some changes.

Weight lifting tends to delay the gratifying results a bit, because it always seems like I go through a few weeks where not much seems to be happening, and if anything I may put on a pound or two. Which can be discouraging.

Then, like today, I have a moment where I realize that the scale may be stubbornly reflecting my restaurant meals from the weekend, b... Tue, 11 Feb 2014 11:13:35 EST 5 weekdays, 5 workouts 5 for 5 again this week - Go, go, go!

I am on a 12-day streak of daily exercise.

It really does feel good to have done something every day. These are not lengthy sessions for the most part, 20 or 25 minutes of indoor cycling or weights are the most common activities.

(Eydie, my friend, you've been my shining example in this area! Thanks for making it look so good to be committed to exercise!)

This weekend has a lot of social events, which generally... Fri, 7 Feb 2014 09:18:28 EST Motivation Discovered a column called Bullish Life

Bullish Life: Weight Lifting For Ladies And Unicorns

ullish-life-weight-lifting-for-ladies-
and-unicorns-254/#ixzz2sdbHFuZ4

Gentlewomen don't crash diet

tlewomen-dont-crash-diet-take-care-of-
yourself-while-taking-over-the-world-149/

Found her advice refreshing in tone and spirit, though ... Fri, 7 Feb 2014 07:21:34 EST Put me first this morning, and now it's time to work Coffee, crafting and kettlebells made for a nice me-centric morning.

Now it's time to attack the many items on my professional to-do list. Wed, 5 Feb 2014 08:46:30 EST Snowy morning Shoveled out this morning, which wasn't super-taxing, as the snow was lightish.

Calling it 30 minutes of activity (I habitually low-ball activity estimates to counteract our natural tendency to think we're doing more than we are.)

Additionally, walked to the drug store, which took me about 18 minutes each way. Calling that 30, also.

8

And now, back to work work work.

ETA: dug up and revised my fitness spreadsheet, which has ... Tue, 4 Feb 2014 10:09:11 EST Good weekend, and starting the week out right Got on my bike this morning for 20+ minutes of indoor spinning.

Last week was excellent - exercised every single day, with two sessions of kettlebells. Fitness is my friend.

As are leftovers.

211 Mon, 3 Feb 2014 09:41:02 EST Deliciousness - w/ pics :) Stir-fry this evening. It came out really well. Made a garlic ginger sauce and marinated soy tempeh in it before roasting that... Cooked up some carrots, bok choy, peppers and mushrooms and added the tempeh and sauce at the end, then put it over brown rice, topped with scallions and sesame seeds. Yum.

<img src="http://photos... Sat, 1 Feb 2014 23:39:13 EST 5 week days 5 days of exercise before work.

So worth the effort.

Onward! Fri, 31 Jan 2014 08:44:34 EST Mornings Today is three for three days I have exercised before work.

Way to go, me! Wed, 29 Jan 2014 10:30:44 EST Last week of January January has been an OK month. Haven't met all my goals completely and consistently, but overall have had a healthier and more active month.

Started out this week well, with a trip to the Merrell store to get new hiking shoes on Sunday and a 30 minute walk before work today.

This week, I'm aiming to exceed my exercise goals... and go right to my intended level for February. Exercise 5x per week with 2x kettlebells.

Onward!

Mon, 27 Jan 2014 10:10:45 EST New week, new plans Wasn't exactly a three day weekend here, but today does feel more like the start of the week, somehow.

Today, I'll hop on my bike after work for a few minutes. (There may also be some snow shoveling later, but I want to get some bike time too.)

I went to the store earlier and returned with the ingredients for some kind of red pepper and leek (and some other stuff) soup. I don't have a recipe to follow, so this will be an adventure. I got good stuff, I think it's going to... Tue, 21 Jan 2014 14:53:20 EST Tuesday plans I am happily planning and scheming offline... working up a 5-year plan, which strikes me as a very optimistic thing to do.

I'm planning to exercise today. A little walk, or a spin on my bike. I'm still stiff from my kettlebell workout on Sunday and could use some "active recovery" time.

I already did some craftiness before work, and plan to do a little more after work.

It's also Day 1 of my latest fiddle class.

So many plans!

Luckily, I h... Tue, 14 Jan 2014 10:01:28 EST Super easy veggie soup So, last night I went to the grocery store and had a marvelous idea in the frozen food aisle... I spotted a bag of mixed vegetables and beans and thought "soup".

This morning, I chopped a couple onions and some garlic and cooked those in olive oil for a few minutes. Then I added a little veggie broth and scraped the bottom of the pot to deglaze it, and added more broth (about 6 cups total, could easily have used more for the amount of veggies I put in.).

I then added tw... Thu, 9 Jan 2014 08:49:44 EST get up, get moving I've been allowing my illness to keep me down... and while there's nothing wrong with that, I am starting to feel that a few minutes of something would probably be better for me than continuing to take it easy.

So, I am pledging to do something active today, even if it's just for a few minutes. Since it's supposed to be in the 20s today, I might even go for a little walk - I've been feeling a bit stir-crazy, too. Wed, 8 Jan 2014 10:12:26 EST New week, new year I'm on the sickness diet at the moment, unfortunately. Not the most entertaining way to start the week.

Oh well, into every life some illness must fall and mine is not permanently debilitating so I really shouldn't complain too hard.

Had intended to get back on the morning exercise wagon this morning, but that didn't happen. Will hope for a better morning tomorrow and who knows, maybe I'll find the energy to move my body a little at some point today, still.

Ha... Mon, 6 Jan 2014 10:21:48 EST Holiday week Didn't get much exercise this week. Did have some indulgent days, eating-wise, too. Had a (mostly) very nice time visiting with my family.

Made some good ornaments this year. I was pleased with how they came out! This one was for my sister in law:

Ready to get back to my more-active, less-excessive routine after my holiday travels. Going to start with some pre-work working-out today.
<... Fri, 27 Dec 2013 07:48:12 EST Ending the work week on a good note Managed to get some exercise 4 out of 5 week days this week, so hurrah for that...

Also believe I am seeing some shrinkage with the tape measure, which makes me pretty happy. My weight has been going up and down... but I seem to be generally running a few pounds less than when I started making more efforts to be active a few weeks ago.

(Just not putting on any weight so far this holiday season is a big accomplishment, of course.)

I've got to dig up my fitness ... Fri, 20 Dec 2013 11:55:27 EST Pretty good Monday Had a full weekend visiting NYC this weekend...

Feel pretty good today, though - got up early and did some work on my ornament, and then hopped on my bike for a few rounds of HIIT before work.

Need to get some food supplies, esp. milk, but otherwise the week is starting off well! Mon, 16 Dec 2013 14:07:04 EST Craft work - holiday style The crafting part of my holiday challenge has proven to be quite engaging!

This is a work in progress, and still has some embellishing to go.

Now I just gotta get some movement in today!

43 Fri, 13 Dec 2013 10:11:09 EST Progress Well, I've been doing really well at treating my one-and-only body better lately.

I've gotten some good exercise pretty regularly... eating better overall, though finding certain days challenging...

Keeping up the good work, and hoping for some slack in my slacks.

9

Tue, 10 Dec 2013 10:26:58 EST Monday strategy I've got my eye on you, Monday.

Taking a friend to dinner tonight, but will choose the venue with care and have something reasonably healthy. Then I'll park far enough away from the event we're attending to ensure that we have a few minutes' walk on both ends.

43 Mon, 9 Dec 2013 11:41:10 EST Evergreen We were talking about trees. We being ladies of different traditions.

I am not religious but we always had a tree. My mother is German, so the tree was real and the holiday was celebrated on the 24th.

I've not generally had the room to have a tree as an adult, and so never developed the habit - I enjoy my parents' tree on the 24th, most years.

A few years ago I was given this by a dear and talented friend. It makes a perfect holiday tree on my mantel, and is... Wed, 4 Dec 2013 18:59:08 EST My happy healthy holiday season Cross-posting from a favorite team, part of a challenge for the holidays...

my happy healthy holidays...

Looking forward to seeing (most of*) my family-of-origin. No guilt or stress.
Hoping for good walking weather to enjoy autumn-into-winter sights and smells...
Partaking of seasonal goodies moderately and with great appreciation.
Re-introducing kettlebells.

*most of, meaning they won't all be there. I'd actually like to see all of them!
... Wed, 4 Dec 2013 07:57:34 EST December countdown Had a rocky start to the week yesterday. Did get some walking in, but did not get enough sleep and overate at mid-day.

I am seeing a very clear connection between sleep-deprived Sundays and over-eating Mondays. Need to work on that at both ends. Try to get more sleep and stop myself when I'm reaching for food I don't really need.

Today started well. I got on the bike in the morning and did 4 cycles of HIIT = 25 minutes before work.

Had greek yogurt for breakfa... Tue, 3 Dec 2013 10:33:01 EST And here we are again... Another new week - and another good start.

Got on the bike before work for 25 minutes. 4x HIIT cycles.

Very cold today, so glad I didn't have to go outside for a workout!

My Thanksgiving week is looking a little non-holiday-ish right now. My cat seems to be suffering from something-or-other (mystery rapid weight loss) and I may end up canceling my family visiting plans to stay home and wave bowls of food under her nose. Took her to the vet on Friday and the te... Mon, 25 Nov 2013 09:19:52 EST Closing out a good week! My last seven days look like this:

Saturday - walk 30+
Sunday - leaf raking 45
Monday - nada
Tuesday - bike 20 (HIIT x3)
Wednesday - bike 25 (HIIT x4)
Thursday - bike 25
Friday - walk 75

And this is week 3 of being more active.

Good feedback on all fronts - I feel good, happier.

Onward! Fri, 22 Nov 2013 10:01:33 EST Mid-week This week is going well now, after the hurdle that is Monday did trip me up a bit.

But, Tuesday and Wednesday I was back on-track with the morning exercise, and did 20 and then 25 minutes, respectively. (HIIT x 3 and HIIT x 4, ditto.)

Today I am going to eat a bunch of veggies. I've been tucking away starchy leftovers and feel the need for some roughage. Wed, 20 Nov 2013 10:14:38 EST 5 for 5 25 minutes on the bike this morning, with 4 HIIT cycles.

That makes it five out of five weekdays that I've exercised, which is fabulous.

And I've got some functional fitness planned for the weekend, as it's time to rake up the leaves in the yard.

Had some additional positive scale feedback this morning, too.

Onward! Fri, 15 Nov 2013 08:32:53 EST Another day well-started! Didn't get out for a walk this morning, but did jump on the bike for 30 moderate minutes of spinning.

May go for a walk at lunchtime, when it's warmed up.

So happy to have my bike available any old time I want it!

Thu, 14 Nov 2013 10:04:10 EST Another HIIT morning... 25 minutes on the bike this morning, with 3 HIIT cycles.

Tomorrow, I should probably go for a walk instead. Don't want to overdo it!

Feeling good and energized.

355 Wed, 13 Nov 2013 08:46:44 EST Fast exercise for busy ladies (and gents) 20 minutes on the bike indoors today.

Did it as HIIT* for the extra awesomeness - hadn't done that in a while, so started with a warm-up, then 3 cycles of 1 minute hard-and-fast and 4 minutes easier.

Cold and wet day here, so a good day to get back on the bike indoors!

217

*HIIT = high intensity interval training - it sounds intimidating and it does kick your butt quite effectively, but you can (and should!) start small/easy and then yo... Tue, 12 Nov 2013 08:21:20 EST New week Long commute this morning, so no walk yet. It's on my agenda for the day, though!

Not a terribly active weekend. Was on my feet a fair amount, but it was to look at art, mostly, so did not heavily engage those larger muscles.

Good for me in other ways, of course.

Food was ok, not too excessive for my lack of sustained activity.

ETA: got my walk in as the sun was going down.

70 minutes

311
8
Mon, 11 Nov 2013 11:28:33 EST Colder morning About to go for a walk. Looks like a nice morning, if chilly.

Had some positive feedback from the scale this morning.

Just got to keep to the path - onward!

4.07 miles
1:07:22

It was a most excellent walk. Was wearing strategic layers and never even felt cold.

311
8 Fri, 8 Nov 2013 07:21:07 EST
