NAN_LT's SparkPeople Blog NAN_LT's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community I've done it! 5KM Sunday morning, 4th July 2010.

I walked 5km in Cancer Research UK's Race for Life. I was there with 10,000 other women and my 7 year old son walked with me.

By the 1km mark my son got bored with my speed and asked if he could run ahead. I did jog with him for about 10 yards, but my knees said Enough! at 9 yards. He walked a faster pace a good 50 yards ahead of me but I wasn't worried because the course was clearly marked out with pink ribbons.

By the 3km ma... Tue, 6 Jul 2010 03:47:47 EST Sick I came down with a chest infection last week that really knocked me down. I started feeling unwell on Monday. Tuesday I felt worse. No way I could feel worse than I did that day.

Or so I thought.

Come Wednesday morning I was feeling even worse and took myself down to see the GP. I had a bad viral chest infection, the latest going round. But in many of his patients, it was developing into a secondary bacterial pneumonia and I was heading that direction. I was sent home ... Mon, 31 May 2010 06:15:29 EST Motivation will only take you so far I was asked to write a short paragraph about why I am participating in Cancer Research UK Race for Life to raise money for breast cancer research.

At the beginning of this year, I made yet another commitment to myself to get fit, become healthy, and maybe even lose a bit of weight. I took a look at what my motivations were, and what has stopped me in the past.

What I have discovered is that for me, having the motivation to do all these things will only take me so far. ... Wed, 19 May 2010 05:21:01 EST Numbers Friday morning I had a review of my progress and fitness routine at Lady Zone with one of the personal trainers.

There is so much focus on numbers when trying to lose weight. Especially numbers on the scale. I told myself that this time though my focus would not be on losing weight but on becoming healthier.

I think that is what my numbers are showing since I first started going to Lady Zone in February.

Weight: Up 4 pounds
Body fat: down 2%
Waist... Sun, 16 May 2010 03:37:16 EST It's a Plan C kind of day for dinner Plan A: I took a pack of mince and a pack of sausage meat out of the freezer to make mini meatloaf rounds for dinner tonight. 5PM rolled around, and the mince wasn't thawed yet. The plan was to make me a small meatloaf using just the beef mince, and to make them with mince and sausage for the rest of the family. (The sausage meat has rusk in it)

Plan B: I run down to Tescos and pick something up for dinner. It's Sunday. Everything closes by 4PM.

Plan C: I've ordered piz... Sun, 18 Apr 2010 13:05:07 EST Problem goal - getting enough water to drink each day! Today's lifestyle change task is to write about a goal that continually gives you problems.

Mine would have to be getting enough to drink each day. No matter how much I aim, I just can't seem to get those last few glasses in each day.

I've done all the tricks - keeping the liter bottle by my side. Adding lime or lemon to change the taste. It all seems to fall by the wayside though after a few days or a few weeks of doing really well. And I come to my senses one afterno... Fri, 16 Apr 2010 13:13:54 EST AWOL Okay - I haven't been tracking at all, but that doesn't mean I've been idle.

I'm getting to LadyZone
at least once a week (aiming for twice a week but I've been dealing will bad backs and ill health and now kids being out of school for 20 days) and I've been using the WiiFit+ regularly.

Plus I am walking. Monday DH and I went to Bluewater for the afternoon and walked around the perimeter of the mall a number of times. Today, I took t... Fri, 9 Apr 2010 16:28:59 EST bits n bobs and a lot of worry just under two weeks ago I went to see my GP because of a sudden pain that had come up in my breast. I also felt something that I thought might be a lump. The GP referred me to the breast clinic and I got the appointment less than a week later for this coming Monday. That's less than 2 weeks from when I saw the GP. This is the NHS. nothing moves that quickly!

Tomorrow, I will be seeing the specialists at the clinic. I have no idea what they will do or decide. Hubby has taken the d... I started out today feeling stressed and tearful. 46 Short and sweet - I have an important training course I need to go to tonight, hubby said he would probably have to work late, and no one to watch the boys so that I could go. Add that it's getting to be that TOM! and my hormones have been bouncing around again (don't you just love that pre-menopausal hormone shift 234

Talked to hubby again - he's told the boss he can't work late tonight and will aim to be her... Thu, 11 Feb 2010 09:50:07 EST Just 1 Pound I've seen this making the rounds and something CelestialAxis

LESTIALAXIS
wrote in her blog today reminded me of it.

One Pound of Fat

Hello! Do you know me? If you don't, you should. I am ONE POUND OF FAT, and I am the happiest pound of FAT that you would ever want to meet! Want to know why? It's because no one ever wants to lose me! After all, I am only ONE POUND OF FAT. Just ONE POUND. ... Wed, 10 Feb 2010 09:16:47 EST Induction day I had my induction at the new gym I joined today.

The fitness trainer started by collecting a whole set of measurements - both upper arms, both thighs, bust, waist, hips, weight, body fat%, blood pressure and pulse.

These will be checked and recorded about every 6 weeks.

The workout itself was good. It's a 30 minute circuit, 2.5 minutes at each station and 30 seconds to get set up in between. A traffic light system is used to direct the women at each stage.... Tue, 9 Feb 2010 11:56:09 EST No weight loss this week - and I'm okay with that I have set my intentions this year not on losing weight, but on becoming fitter through eating better and becoming more active.

So, maybe I haven't lost. That doesn't matter. I am eating better. I feel better. And I have set things in motion to become even more active.

That is what matters. Mon, 8 Feb 2010 03:48:25 EST What I would like for my 44th birthday I don't really need anything, so instead of cards or gifts I would love it if friends would consider making it possible for my cousin to go on a Mission trip to Kenya with her church Youth group.

71358
Sun, 7 Feb 2010 07:22:55 EST Getting an urge to exercise It was a strange feeling. I usually take the weekends off from exercise since I have family home. But today, I really had an urge to get up and do some sort of exercise.

So, once the boys were in bed, I put on a Qi Gong program I had recorded and did 20 minutes of that. Sat, 6 Feb 2010 17:38:41 EST I joined a gym Like I said in my feed, I joined a women only gym today.

I got a flyer through the door from this place a few weeks ago, and had seen their sign outside the business - they're across the road from my favourite Mexican restaurant.

So, I looked them up on the internet, and checked out another women only fitness place also in town. The one I went for is much cheaper.

It's a place called LadyZone. They provide a set up for a 30 minute circuit training session. ... Wed, 3 Feb 2010 10:45:33 EST Step 1 in reaching my goal to walking 5km in the Race for Life in June Step 1 has now been reached. As I needed to go to the major shopping mall in the area today I stopped at a specialist running shop and picked out a good pair of supportive walking shoes. I also found information on other sponsored walks in the region, and got on their mailing list to get regular updates on future events.

So - I've got the shoes. Now, to start walking!

Since I knew I would be there and not able to do my regular walk, I got to the mall about an hour befo... Mon, 1 Feb 2010 10:58:45 EST Set your goals for the future, then work back I did and learned lot yesterday which will be of benefit to my children's school and to the governing body which I chair.

But, one thing I learned applies equally well here when it comes to goal setting.

Figure out where you want to be in 5 years time, then work backwards to figure out what you need to do to reach those goals.

So applying that to my goals.

Goal
Participate in the Race for Life 2010 5km walk/run.

At this point,... Thu, 28 Jan 2010 05:38:26 EST I'm doing a 5K walk It was bit of a whim, we'll blame this cold I've picked up and the cold medicine which hasn't helped a bit.

But...

I've signed up to take part in a 5K charity walk for Cancer Research UK.

Race for Life raised money for breast cancer research. I know so many women whose lives have been affected by breast cancer it just made sense to do this walk.

I'm aiming to raise £500. Not a high amount, but I figure for my first walk it is good place to aim ... Tue, 26 Jan 2010 15:47:09 EST My Spark List - in no particular order; part 1 1. Move to Stage 4 at Spark People
2. Mon, 25 Jan 2010 18:15:21 EST The Spark 28 day program, week 4 A big part of the focus for week 4, part 4 of the SP program, is maintenance. I've never made it to this stage in Spark People because I've never reached a point where I felt I was at the maintenance stage in my weight loss efforts. It may not happen this year, but high on my list of things to accomplish is to reach Stage 4!

Another area of focus is on spreading the Spark to others. Sharing what I have found and I am doing that in my own way. I'm not the proselytising sort, so if f... Sat, 16 Jan 2010 08:22:45 EST Visit to the rheumatologist I didn't mention yesterday that I trekked up to Guys Hospital in London on Wednesday to see the rheumatologist.

Saw a different one this time who reviewed all the tests and notes from my last visit then did a quick look at my hands, asked if I had any rashes - just a small eczema type that shows up periodically on my foot and seems to be in a remission stage at the moment.

He then looked at the soft tissue in my hands, wrists, and fingers using an ultrasound machine. U... Fri, 15 Jan 2010 04:24:13 EST A new profile picture I've got a new profile picture up. It's the motivation poster I made for myself.

Just for a bit of explanation.

Gratitude = to remind me to be grateful for even the smallest blessings in life

Stick with it = No giving up

Love Your Body = that old self esteem getting comfy in your own skin thing. With added pictures of bare skin and body parts

Get active = my goal is to walk at least 15 minutes a day. Over time, I intend to increase t... Thu, 14 Jan 2010 16:53:11 EST Snow days Boys have been home since Wednesday afternoon. They were supposed to go back on Friday, but the school lost its heating. Brrr!

I told hubby about my goal of walking each day and he's made sure I have had the opportunity to get out each day. Once the boys get back to school, I'll be getting the 2 X 10 minute walks each day getting the boys to and from school, plus my 15 minute walk.

I want to get on the Wii Fit, but haven't had to opportunity with the boys around. I ten... Sat, 9 Jan 2010 16:48:25 EST Feeling motivated I'm really feeling motivated to continue with my healthy eating and increased activity today. I want to get out walking each day. I want to keep doing what I'm doing.

That's the easy part.

The difficult part will be sustaining this motivation over time. Fri, 8 Jan 2010 17:13:42 EST A new opportunity for exercise My eldest son brought round his Wii and Wii Fit for me to use today. He set it up and talked me through how to use it. Then watched as I did some of the balance exercises.

We then looked at SP and he had a look through some of the logs I've been keeping.

So, adding to the goals.

15 minutes walk each day and 10 minutes on the Wii Fit. Thu, 7 Jan 2010 16:43:24 EST An alternative place to walk It's been snowing pretty steady since last night and the pavements are quite slippery. Add to that, school got out at 1:15. Meant my chances for walking today were limited as I needed to go shopping this morning.

I made up for it though. Walked the boys to and from school. That's 20 minutes total. I too the stairs from the parking lot into the grocery store, and hubby parked at the far end on the level we parked on. We purposefully went down to the lower level so that we had more ... Wed, 6 Jan 2010 08:44:10 EST cravings and walking I had such cravings yesterday on top of what felt like strong premenstrual sadness and moodiness. I really wanted to eat everything wheat filled and sweet in the house.

I didn't though.

Instead, I grabbed a cottage cheese with pineapple mixed in and a banana and ate those. Then had some time alone.

I know that I must have time of solitude on a regular basis. What with the kids being out of school on holiday I haven't been able to have that recently. Add to... Tue, 5 Jan 2010 17:17:44 EST short again but I've finally lost Calories are running just under 1200 for the day again. Using the suggestion in my previous blog entry, I am going to finish off my day with a small glass of Innocent's Fruit Smoothie - I believe we have the strawberry and banana variety open in the fridge. That should just boost me up over the edge plus will give me another fruit serving.

On the better news front, I stood on the scales this morning - and finally, after nearly a month back at SP, I have dropped 2 pounds in weight.... Sun, 3 Jan 2010 17:19:30 EST Running short on calories Yet again I find that I am running short by around 100 calories. Thing is, I'm not hungry. I've eaten well all day, and I can't see any reason to find something more to eat when I'm not hungry just to add the calories.

Didn't weigh myself yesterday like I should have done for a challenge I'm doing- I'll get that taken care of tomorrow morning.

Sat, 2 Jan 2010 18:29:10 EST The Spark 28 day Program Week 1 This first week focuses on setting goals. So, here I am. I've always been pretty lousy at setting goals, and following through with them. Not this time though!

I have already been thinking about goals for myself in the coming 12 weeks. This has helped me to focus more on that, and develop those goals further.

So, here we have it. My goals:

Personal goals for week 1:

Create a Vision Collage
Post it up where I will see it daily

Med... Wed, 30 Dec 2009 04:02:56 EST Coeliac test negative I just phoned the GP surgery to see if the results from the blood test were back. They are, and have shown up as being negative for coeliac disease.

Even so, beginning now I will be eating a gluten free diet. I plan on giving it 6 weeks and will see how I feel.

Now, to do some reading up on gluten free diets so that I know what all I need to avoid. Tue, 29 Dec 2009 10:38:23 EST Christmas temptations The trouble with Christmas is all the chocolate and other treats that are left in the house after.

I'm going to put all the chocolate I received except for my minty chocolate orange up in the cupboard and dole it out the the boys a bit at a time.

And I'll send the last mince pie to work with hubby tomorrow. Mon, 28 Dec 2009 17:23:59 EST My Virtual Walk Today, I have made the decision to start a virtual walk. I will be attempting to walk the length of Great Britain (from Land's End to John O'Groats. According to Google Maps, a person going non-stop would be able to walk that distance in 12 days, 14 hours. Total miles: 910 miles/1465 km.

My goal will be to walk that distance in 12 1/2 weeks.

I will be tracking miles walked here.

And if anyone would like to join me virtually, let me know. And be sure to trac... Sun, 27 Dec 2009 20:26:09 EST Welcome to New Beginnings I've decided in the New Year to take part in 2 challenges. The Bootcamp, and the January challenge in one of the teams I belong to.

I really don't know how I will get along, especially with the exercise part of both challenges, but I will do my best. The boys start back to school on the 5th, and my first endeavour will be to get out of the house, no matter the weather, and walk each day. Even if it's just 10 minutes. Sun, 27 Dec 2009 17:56:21 EST Back on track on Boxing Day Today, I am back on track.

I had a very enjoyable time yesterday. I didn't restrict or limit or feel guilt. I ate too much for Christmas dinner, didn't have supper after we got home. Wasn't hungry.

Funny thing though - too much to eat for me these days isn't near as much as too much used to be.

If you're looking at my weight tracker, you'll see it hasn't moved at all. I'm okay with that. My goal right now isn't to loose weight, it's to learn how to eat heal... Sat, 26 Dec 2009 06:36:10 EST Happy Holidays! Today, I am not on a diet.

Fri, 25 Dec 2009 04:06:46 EST No results back yet I had to see the practice nurse yesterday so asked her if the blood test checking for coeliac disease had come back yet.

Not yet.

I am tempted to just cut all gluten out for 6 weeks to see what happens, but know that until they have finished testing it isn't such a grand idea - don't want to get a false negative should it be that I do have coeliac disease.

Christmas

Meanwhile, we're gearing up for Christmas. A big change this year in that I have ... Tue, 22 Dec 2009 06:25:39 EST waiting game I had another evening of being unable to eat the other day. That came after I had pasta for lunch. Still waiting for the results of the coeliac intolerance test to come back.

I'm still tracking my foods. I really don't expect to actually lose any weight, not the way things are going. I want to be able to show over a period of time though that I am keeping my calories consistently under 1600, and I'm still not losing weight. Will also come in handy when I do have my appointment wi... Thu, 17 Dec 2009 18:10:35 EST GP visit Yet another visit to the GP today to go over lab work. MY liver seems to be holding steady. They'll still keep an eye on it but for the moment it doesn't appear to be a worry.

Tried to check my urine for blood because of the continuing kidney pain I'm having, but I wasn't able to give her anything in the bottle.
I mentioned the problems I've been having with my bowels lately (just one thing among many) and she's now wanting to recheck for coeliac's disease. That is something... Mon, 14 Dec 2009 12:14:11 EST A slow day I got a full night's sleep, and slept in until 9 this morning. But have still been very tire all day. I went back to bed about 2PM and slept for 3 hours.

I did get the appointment from the nutrition clinic today - March. Unfortunately, they too have a long waiting list.

Dinner tonight was a nice seafood risotto. I have put the recipe up in my cookbook here at SP. We made a basic risotto and added prawns and smoked salmon to it. Absolutely delicious!

Sat, 12 Dec 2009 17:29:27 EST Chronic everything I woke up this morning with a severe headache. Sensitive to any light. Even with the curtains shut and the lights off I was trying to rest with my hand over my eyes to block any light. Very shaky. Very weak.

Paul worked at home and I stayed in bed until noon. Thankfully, my headache eased by then, but I continued to be shaky. It got bad enough that I asked Paul to see if I could get in to see the GP. He phoned and I got an appointment for 4PM.

Went back to bed, feeling... Thu, 10 Dec 2009 17:52:50 EST Rains and pours Potassium levels seem to be maintaining. I'm still taking the folic acid supplement because those levels were low. The endocrinologist ordered another 24 hour urine for calcium along with blood work looking at electrolytes and a magnesium level. I'm hoping when I see my GP on Monday she'll have those results on hand.

My liver continues to be enlarged. Possibly getting larger because my GP was able to feel it this time without doing near the pressing into my gut as they had to do a... Tue, 8 Dec 2009 16:15:45 EST Minor scare the past week Off to see the GP again last week, mainly to try to get handle on what is happening with all the tests I've had done recently, but also because I had developed a severe burning under the skin on my hands.

Regular GP was off sick, so I had to see a locum and start off by filling her in on the whole story thus far. She ordered some blood tests, and lter phoned to let me know she'd discuss things with my GP when she came back.

Among the things drawn this time was a renal... Mon, 9 Nov 2009 08:29:35 EST More health problems Just when you thought it was safe. Gods, I am feeling more and more like a hypochondriac, except it's not all in my head.

I'm having problems with my kidney again - the right one which has the narrowing in the upper lobule has been hurting again, but this time worse than it ever has in the past. Think burning hot brand being plunged into your back kind of pain. I'm to the point where I am thinking I need to get referred back to the urologist so she can do surgery to open it up. <... Tue, 6 Oct 2009 03:50:09 EST I gained, but it's okay I knew I hadn't done as well the past week. I wasn't tracking like I should, and even though i wasn't eating extras, I also wasn't fully watching what I ate as well as I should.

Plus what with my wrist hurting so much I read didn't want to get out and walk.

I did talk to the nutritionists about my calorie intake. From tracking I know that I routinely come in at around 300 calories per day less than what is recommended, and I'm not getting my full quota of fruits and veg... Thu, 14 May 2009 05:24:01 EST wrist Paul was right. I tried to get into see a doc at the surgery today but they were booked solid. Only 2 docs on duty and every man and his dog worried about the avian-swine crossbred flu.

Anyway, once I got the boys home from school i phoned and left a message for my sis-in-law to phone when she got home. With the idea that I could go down to A&E if it wasn't too late. They got home close to 5PM. Bit late to try to get in and out of A&E before the middle of the night.

So... Tue, 5 May 2009 19:16:57 EST Ouch I'm not sure what I did, but my wrist has been really hurting me the past few days. Paul says I've damaged the tendon.

He wrapped my wrist yesterday and rewrapped it again today. Hopefully it will start feeling better tomorrow.

Hardly any walking yesterday or today, but I will make up for it during the week I am sure. Sun, 3 May 2009 16:03:15 EST Friday 1 May 2009 Happy Beltane

Today has been a beautiful day outside. The sun has been shining and temperatures have been in the 70s.

Since I didn't take my hot chocolate break yesterday, I went out today after taking Thing 2 to school.

Didn't want hot chocolate though and I had such an urge to be outside. I parked up on the High Street and stopped into Subway's for a sandwich. After looking over my options, I chose a child's meal.

I got a 3-inch turkey breast s... Fri, 1 May 2009 14:43:30 EST
