NANADEE44's SparkPeople Blog NANADEE44's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community It is Soooo Good to be Back! It's been a very long time since I've even visited and I can honestly say, I've missed you all!

I have been recovering from rotator cuff surgery on November 18 and am finally getting to the point where I am able to be on the computer for a while and be comfortable. I am exercising in ways that are totally different than what I was accustomed to prior to my surgery. My arm didn't even look like it was ever going to be the same again, shortly after the surgery. M... Mon, 6 Jan 2014 21:58:58 EST Just Thinking

Did you ever have one of those days, or in this case nights, where the thoughts would just start flowing in your head? Some of the thoughts come out of nowhere and I wonder where in the world and why in the world did that just pop into my head. If I wasn't so blessed, I could have a real pity party right now.

The past week has been a little difficult. I'm anticipating shoulder surgery on Monday. ... Sat, 16 Nov 2013 09:02:16 EST Whew! And WooHoo! Today was supposed to be a nice bright sunny day and DH and I had planned to get much done in the yard to prepare for winter. Sadly, it didn't turn out to be a sunny day, but there was no rain in sight, just lots of gloomy clouds looming overhead, so we dug in and got started anyway. DH ran the lawn sweep to pick up as many leaves as were possible in 30 mph winds, along with the corn debris from the corn picker that came through the neighbors field yesterday. Always a mess there, but we're ... Mon, 4 Nov 2013 22:07:09 EST Life, For What it's Worth This blog was inspired by PIXIE-LICIOUS and her blog The Old Me and Why I Love Her. Read it if you haven't already.

I have a friend who is 4 years younger than I, she's about 61. She had bariatric surgery to help her lose weight. She was really quite heavy at the time she had her surgery. But she did it! She started losing weight quickly which is pretty normal under the circumstances. She got down to a size 0-2. She was a tiny person in high school, so this is not so unusual... Sun, 27 Oct 2013 16:03:24 EST "Bon Voyage", Hello! I'm Back! Well, we've just returned from a dieter's nightmare of a vacation, but a wonderfully scenic 7 day New England-Canada cruise buffet! All the foods you could possibly imagine were available from 5AM til 11PM; all deliciously lined up and just waiting for the people to come through the lines and consume every morsel. The choices were amazing-ly...HEALTHY!!

Not all choices were healthy, mind you, but there were o... Mon, 30 Sep 2013 00:48:58 EST The Long Journey My last blog eluded to the days of car travel, when the boys would be sitting in the back seat of our Vista Cruiser station wagon, asking that age old question, "Are we there yet".

Well, here it is, exactly one month after the last blog entry and I'm not there yet! The weight is still coming off, not going up at all, at least not on my "weigh-in" day. I have days when my weight fluctuates a bit, but I no longer let it bother me, which in a way, is a NSV. And when I consider the f... Thu, 22 Aug 2013 19:09:25 EST So Close, Yet Still So Very Far to Go Have you ever had your kids ask you, "Mom, are we there yet?" I feel like asking that same question of my scale when I get on it to weigh myself at weekly intervals. "Are we there yet?" This morning (yes, I'm one of those who weigh every morning, but only record once a week) I nearly jumped for joy. I am only 5# from my goal. So close!

When I think about how close I am to my personal weight goal, I realize that it's not just reaching goal that is important to me, it's reaching... Mon, 22 Jul 2013 21:59:47 EST Support System Blessings I know I've come a long way on Spark, but the past few days have proven that my support system is the best I could hope for. My husband has always been supportive of my efforts, but this week, he has actually started weighing and measuring my portions for me, just I would. He counts out the exact number of Sunchips in a serving and he knows just how many ounces of protein I am "allowed".

I have been successful in staying focused and have never waivered from weighing and measuri... Wed, 17 Jul 2013 19:50:29 EST Just the Facts Ma'am! Having been encouraged by Spark Coach to blog about all the improvements in my life since adopting a healthier lifestyle, I was just a bit surprised to see that I haven't written a blog since June 11? Oh my, and I'm usually so talkative and have even been accused of being "too wordy". I'm not wordy, I'm descriptive. I like to paint a picture for my listener, my reader, in this case. But not to worry, I will try to be as concise as possible and as Dragnet's Jack Webb would say, "Just the fa... Tue, 2 Jul 2013 17:30:46 EST Weather or Not It seems that lately I've been making excuses and blaming the weather for my lack of ambition for exercise. I don't have much in the way of equipment to substitute in cases of all day rains or storms. Winter is no problem, because I love being out in the snow whether it is just walking through the fields around our home or cross country skiing.

But it's summer and our weather has been, well, poopy! Rain occurs at least every other day and I haven't completed a walk that has been... Wed, 12 Jun 2013 00:06:16 EST Little Black Skirt I wasn't going to do it. I wasn't going to say anything about the little black skirt I tried on the other day while just nosing around one of the stores. I found this cute little skirt in block colors of black and white, with a blouse to match with a peplum hemline that was just adorable. The best part was that when I tried it on, it fit. I was pretty excited, but because I am also pretty critical of myself in the mirror image, I talked me out of it. I walked away.

My husband ha... Thu, 30 May 2013 21:41:50 EST All I Have to Say, Is Get Outta My Way! One of the biggest "worries" a person can have when working hard on losing weight and getting healthy, is your co-worker, friend, cousin, neighbor and maybe even your hair stylist, getting in your way.

I've been very fortunate, I'm surrounded by people who have supported me from the start. I don't have the worry of my neighbor bringing me a huge slice of her rhubarb crisp, or my friends trying to talk me into a "junk food" lunch. My biggest support is right here at home. My husb... Sat, 25 May 2013 23:41:32 EST 4 Months Going Strong I recently celebrated (quietly) my 4 month-iversary with SparkPeople. 4 month anniversary isn't right, because the anni part means year and it hasn't been a year yet. So, I'm inventing a new word and calling this my 4 month-iversary. But nevertheless, whatever you choose to call it, I am one very happy Sparker.

After 4 months in Spark, I have lost a little over 22 pounds. That's an average, I guess of about 5 pounds a month. If I break this into weeks, it's been 21 weeks, so ... Wed, 15 May 2013 23:19:53 EST Is This Easy or Is It Just Me? I have been a member of SparkPeople since January 13, 2013. Since that time, I have taken off almost 20 pounds. Let's see, that's about 15 weeks ago which makes my weight loss average 1.25# a week, which is extremely pleasing to me. Is this easy or is it just me?

I am a yoyo dieter, or at least I was!

I have been losing and gaining weight since about 1980, several years after the birth of my second son. I have tried about every fad diet, every new weight loss techniq... Tue, 30 Apr 2013 23:35:52 EST A Summer Treat We Can All Appreciate After spending a little time on facebook tonight, this item was posted by a friend. I shared it on facebook for my friends there. Now I'm sharing it here for all my Spark Friends!

This is the Ultimate in Summer Food Fun!

Mon, 29 Apr 2013 23:17:14 EST Ready, Set, Play! This weekend was especially enjoyable! Our three grandsons came to spend the weekend and boy do they keep me hopping! Literally!

It helps when you live near a beautiful park with lots of playgrounds and other attractions and activities for the boys. They love our park! My husband was out of town today, so it was just the boys and I. We took a picnic lunch to the park, which we enjoyed before all the activity began. The weather was amazingly gorgeous.

We spent 3.5 ho... Sun, 28 Apr 2013 00:19:17 EST New Goal, Hmm, Let Me Thank! First of all, there is not a typo in the title of this blog. Today's program on Spark Coach is to set t "new" goal for health today. There is just one problem there for me anyway.

I am healthy! My cholesterol was my biggest problem, but since eating healthy has now become a way of life for me, those numbers are better than they have ever been. In fact, my doctor will be taking off meds (which he cut in half the last time I was there), off my meds altogether! Now that's a big wo... Sun, 21 Apr 2013 15:51:54 EST Sunshine Vitamin D Well, finally! Our wet, rainy weather has finally moved on and today, we had loads of sunshine covering the earth. It was just a pleasure doing anything and everything outside. After more than a week of wet, gloomy weather, my supply of vitamin D from one of the best sources ever, had become almost completely D-pleted. Thanks be to God for the sunshine, blue skies and the strength of body to be able to enjoy this day.

67 345 313 345</em... Sat, 20 Apr 2013 20:52:40 EST Sad Day in Boston Today was supposed to be the most exciting day of the spring season in Boston, MA. Today was supposed to be the day that many runners participated in a long time tradition in that city. The Boston Marathon.
Today will now forever be the day that will be remembered as the day that terrorists took the lives of three people and injured countless others, for reasons that no one will ever understand. One of those victims was an eight year old boy. A child in the crowd, probably watching his ... Mon, 15 Apr 2013 23:34:47 EST Signs of the Spark Times

My experience with SparkPeople has been great. I started this journey in January and it has been an exciting adventure to far. The best part of my journey is the opportunity I have to share this road with so many others who are striving to reach the same destination as me.

Did you ever stop to think about how many members... Sun, 14 Apr 2013 14:18:05 EST Hello??? Mother Nature! I Have a Few Questions! As much as I look forward to Spring each year, I seriously have my doubts that we are going to see Spring this year. At least, not in the ways that we have seen past springs. Our weather pattern has been dreary to say the least. We've had almost 6 days of rain, not pouring down rain, thankfully, but the kind of rain that reminds me of the local carwash. You know what I mean, don't you? The kind of rain that completely saturates every fiber of your being because it seems to come from all d... Sat, 13 Apr 2013 16:19:13 EST Adventure or Pain? SparkCoach wants to know about whether my weight loss journey has been painful or adventurous.

Well, Coach! This has been the grandest weight loss adventure I have ever undertaken in my life. How is that? You ask.

Well, Coach! Let me tell you just why this has been an adventure. Every day is a new day for me. Every day is a new challenge, but not in the negative way. I'm challenged to try new things every day. New Recipes, New exercises, New goals, New calorie requirem... Tue, 2 Apr 2013 22:03:52 EST Shake it up? Shape it up! I have been pleasantly surprised recently by the changes in my calorie requirements based on recent changes (lower) in my weight and then over the week-end, changes I made in my fitness goals.

Today's program on SparkCoach is based on changing up my fitness routine. OK, Coach! You've got my attention!

I'm a walker. I love walking, but I know that just walking isn't going to get me to my fitness goals. So..., I have to shake it up a bit, according to Nicole.
<... Sun, 31 Mar 2013 20:41:30 EST Fate steps In! The best laid plans often go straight into the trashcan, when something as simple as a freezer door accidently left slight ajar, causes the entire morning to be spent defrosting and pitching anything that may have been compromised by the open door.

Fortunately, our freezer sits in our garage and our temperatures this morning were below freezing, so most of the items were just a little frosty, but nowhere near thawing.

And besides, the freezer needed attention anyway, ... Wed, 13 Mar 2013 22:47:38 EST Union Dairy Day Does your hometown have a favorite dairy? And I don't mean Dairy Queen or Culver's or McDonald's. I'm talking about a real dairy with real ice cream.

We have a wonderful dairy in our hometown that has been around since I was a little girl. My parents used to take my sisters and I for a Sunday drive, sometimes around town looking at the homes my dad was working on, or sometimes out in the country to see if we could get lost. But the best part, the part that 3 little girls looked f... Wed, 6 Mar 2013 21:05:51 EST Let it snow! Today was a snow day! Now when you have a snow day as a kid, that means no school, maybe a chance to go sledding or build a snowman or snow fort or have a snowball fight.

But when you're retired, it usually just means a day that you stay in the house and wait for the weather system to pass. Thankfully, though, my husband and I have never been "sitters". We are "goers". We waited until after lunch to finally put on the snow gear and go out to tackle the driveways and sidewalks t... Tue, 5 Mar 2013 17:47:10 EST On my way! Today, I broke my own rule and got on the scale before I was "supposed to". I couldn't help myself. Yesterday was my "normal" day to weigh and since I'm weighing just every 2 weeks, I should be waiting until March 16 to weigh again.

But here's the thing! Yesterday, I was just .2# short of reaching my first 10#, so my curiosity got the best of me and I jumped back on the scale again this morning. But, it paid off! I was at exactly 10# lost!

My ultimate goal is not just ... Sun, 3 Mar 2013 20:47:06 EST Time for Celebration Today I am walking about 2 inches off the floor! I received a phone call from my doctor today, giving me the results of my most recent blood draw for cholesterol. My cholesterol has almost always been high, once in a while it comes down, but the results this time are my BEST EVER!!

Total Cholesterol is 155
Triglycerides 94 Normal is Less than 150 BIG YAY!!
HDL (Good Chol) 53 40-60 considered good, another BIG YAY!
LDL (BAD Chol)... Tue, 26 Feb 2013 13:46:17 EST Exercise, me do my exercise This little ditty was something my mother used to say while she was bending and pointing her index fingers on both hands. Now that's the kind of exercise I didn't mind doing at all.

But, somehow, after reading all the blogs, reading the Daily Spark, reading and listening to the coaches since I started on SparkPeople, I'm finding that as my day starts, I'm already thinking about what I'm going to do today to exercise.

I have several DVD's including yoga, and core workout... Sat, 23 Feb 2013 21:44:16 EST Huh? After celebrating a really good day for both nutrition and exercise, I was shocked when I ran my reports and learned that I "supposedly" was way over my cholesterol goal. Goal being 300, my "supposed" daily tally 491!!!

What?? I went back to make sure that I had everything entered correctly, yup. Looks good. Today was the first time I had avocado, but that couldn't be the culprit, could it? Google says no! No cholesterol in avocado. There is nothing on my food list that could ha... Fri, 22 Feb 2013 21:16:46 EST Spark Guy Challenge Well, today when I went to Spark Coach, I was a little disheartened, because I unknowingly "blew" my healthy eating today when I ordered a Mediterranean Chicken Wrap from Quiznos. My heart sank, when I had to look up the nutritional value for this item and found it came in at a whopping 990 calories with fat grams that went through the roof!

The challenge from Spark Guy is to identify all the things that have improved for me since starting Spark People. Wow! There are so many! ... Thu, 21 Feb 2013 19:44:06 EST Benefits of Massage Therapy As a retired Licensed Massage Therapist, I know how good a massage can feel, both from the giving and receiving aspect.

I was a Massage Therapist for 10 years, changing my career path at age 54. I still own and manage my own office, with 2 licensed Massage Therapists and a registered Reflexologist.

Massage benefits include, but are not limited to: increased blood flow to muscle tissue, including that major muscle we all house within our chest walls, the heart. Many of his friends gathered for an open house at one of our local sports bars. I was a little uncertain of just what there would be for me to eat, having been there several times before lunch and dinner. The menu choices were all pretty much high calorie, high fat items, so I was pretty skeptical.

What a surprise! When we got there, I saw that there was a buffet table set up. ... Sat, 16 Feb 2013 22:27:27 EST Taking Care of Dad It sometimes amazes me , when you are caring for an elderly parent, just how much of a watchdog you have to be to protect them from outside influences.

My dad is a resident in a nursing facility nearby. He has dementia, which can be really sad some days. For the most part, he is happy and content, even though some days, he's not sure where he lives. He has never not known his three daughters when we are there to spend an afternoon or evening. His recollection of stories from the p... Fri, 15 Feb 2013 19:20:19 EST Better Day Today! YAY! Today was a great day!

Enjoyed an inspiring morning with my dad, and many other residents of his nursing home at a devotional service conducted by my church. As a child, I remember my dad having a wonderful singing voice and he was always one that you could pick out easily from anywhere in the church. The singing of many familiar songs is his favorite part of these "church" services and his voice is as strong as it was when I was younger. He may not remember all the words, but hi... Tue, 12 Feb 2013 18:50:41 EST Low Energy Level All Day Ate healthy, but no energy. Hoping tomorrow will be better. I feel fine, just no energy. Tomorrow I will be working out for sure. Very little activity today. Mon, 11 Feb 2013 22:25:20 EST I'm Doing This For Me Have you started your weight loss journey for reasons other than your own? I haven't been instructed by a doctor to lose the weight. My husband has never criticized my body and has told me he thinks I'm sexy no matter how I feel about myself. My friends have not asked me to join them in losing weight together, nor have then encouraged me to join a gym.

I'm doing this for my very own reasons. I'm the one who doesn't like the reflection in the mirror. I'm the one who cringes every t... Thu, 7 Feb 2013 22:27:51 EST Sunshine, Snow and Skis Today was a lovely winter day, with blue skies, fluffy clouds scattered about in the sky and temps near 30 degrees. In short, a simply marvelous day for opening the back door and skiing cross country through our neighboring farmer's fields. There is a small wooded area about .25 miles behind our house, which is where I usually head on days like this one. Sometimes, not often, some of our wildlife can be spotted, but not today.

What a great way to exercise! A workout with a smile! ... Wed, 6 Feb 2013 21:42:18 EST Annual Mammogram Day I just thought I would use this opportunity to encourage all of you ladies over the age of 40 to schedule your annual mammogram, if you haven't already.

I can't say they are quick and painless, but early detection is key to finding abnormalities and following the proper protocol prescribed by your doctor.

390 Tue, 5 Feb 2013 21:23:11 EST Scaling Back

Since beginning my weight loss adventure with SparkPeople, 3 weeks ago, I have weighed myself just 3 times. And I'm finding that for me, the result, not only on the scale, but on my psyche, has been very positive.

In previous attempts to lose weight, I would weigh myself every single day, sometimes more than once or twice a day. I was allowing the scale to be my main focus. I worried about every little g... Sun, 3 Feb 2013 23:32:00 EST 3 Weeks Later Today just happens to be 3 weeks from my start date on SparkPeople.
