MSBEKANATOR's SparkPeople Blog MSBEKANATOR's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Reminiscing As I was blogging about our walk to the park last night, it started me thinking to where I started my journey for my health.

Right before I began my journey, my family and some neighbors decided to walk to the same park we were at yesterday. I am a little embarrassed to admit it, but I couldn't walk the mile to the park. I drove to the park with Trixie and struggled to even walk around the park once. I think that little walk is between 1/4 and 1/3 of a mile, and it took everything... Sat, 19 Nov 2016 00:40:49 EST My Little Dog
This morning was a glorious fall morning. It was sunny and cool, which is a perfect walking combination.

My little dog Trixie and I usually take a walk in the morning, and I have to say I was pretty happy when we set out, as was she. She absolutely loves our morning walks, and her afternoon jaunt to the mailbox with my husband. We usually walk an hour to an hour and a half along a rout... Thu, 17 Nov 2016 23:16:03 EST How can it be tomorrow when it's still today? That is the question I am asking right now! I just finished work and decided to relax a little and finish Sparking. As I popped onto my iPad, I noticed the time and it's almost 1. Say what? I am not even finished with my day and it's already tomorrow. Needless to say, this will be a short blog!!

I have just 2 things tonight!
1. Cooler weather! Baby it's Cold outside! Well, at least it is to those of us in SoCal. We are in the low 50's, with a possibility of getting into the... Thu, 17 Nov 2016 03:54:16 EST About those goals...

This photo is a quote that has come to mean quite a lot to me the last couple of months. It is something I have thought about a lot, and I often use it to help make choices that are beneficial to my health journey.

You, know, on those days when you have been working your tail off, and the "to do" list has been growing instead of shrinking; or you get that dreaded call that Mom ha... Tue, 15 Nov 2016 22:58:46 EST I'm a 5%er!
One of our mini challenges for the Fall 5% Teams this week is to blog. I haven't blogged since waaaaaaaay last spring; it's probably the easiest aspect of the Spark journey to let go when things are busy, and my life has been crazy busy.

That busyness is why I love the 5% challenges. They work for me because they keep me plugged in to a team of caring and supportive individuals; people ... Mon, 14 Nov 2016 14:35:09 EST What a day... I couldn't sleep last night for some reason; I was really restless. Consequently I slept through my alarm, and had to rush to get ready to get out the door to pick up my Mom so she could try this new church near the assisted living facility she is at. She is a little over 30 minutes away from here, so I was in a rush, which means I ran out the door with no breakfast or coffee! Yikes! I really didn't want to be late, lol.
We made it to the church in plenty of time, so that was good. The ... Mon, 4 Apr 2016 00:32:31 EST About that suitcase... I am up in the Seattle area, staying at my sister's home while she and my bro-in-law and nephew are on a much needed spring break get away to Hawaii. It is a win/win situation as I get a chance to have time with my Mom, and also a very quiet home to relax in alone, and I have her two kitties to keep me company. It gives her a chance to get away and still have peace of mind about my Mom as I am here to take her to appointments, keep her company, and just be here in case life goes south again,... Fri, 1 Apr 2016 21:43:58 EST Surprise!! My oldest daughter and I left at 2 a.m.this morning, and drove for 6 1/2 hours to surprise my youngest daughter who is away at college with a quick birthday visit. We are staying the night, and heading home tomorrow afternoon.
Fun so far, but I am tired, lol.

Sat, 26 Mar 2016 13:05:40 EST One step forward... I have been thinking about that old adage "one step forward, two steps back." I have felt that way many times along this health journey; you make a little progress, have an oops, and start again.. and then you think, "well one step forward, two steps back."
I realized there is a problem with thinking that way though. For starters, it isn't accurate. I remember when I decided to cut soda out of my life and drink water instead. I would go a few days with no soda, and then have one. I'd be ... Sat, 26 Mar 2016 00:52:36 EST Cool Tool!!! My Sparkfriend Skeetor posted a simulated picture on her status. I had seen similar images before, but she happened to include the url. It sparked my interest so I checked it out. The website is
I created these, talk about a motivator!!!

The captions read "Where I started." "Where I am." "Where I am going."

On my way!!!! Wed, 16 Mar 2016 18:31:31 EST This kind of says it all! I read this quote last night, and it really spoke to me. I decided to make this pic so I could put it up on my mirror to remind myself how far I have come! 252

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 13:42:10 EST KISS I am fairly sure most people are aware of the KISS acronym, keep it, no negative self talk, so we will settle for sweetie, lol.
So I decided to KISS my daily goals.
1. Eat healthy, stay on plan.
2. Move my boootay.
3. Drink my water.

Pretty simple. I can do it!
Have you KISSed your goals lately?
Tue, 15 Mar 2016 14:10:37 EST Here We Go!! I have been back on a Whole 30ish food plan for a few days, and I can already tell a big difference in how I feel. I do say "ish" because I have been eating a little bit of dairy. I think I will drop that this week and start a Whole 30. My body really lets me know when I am eating things that don't make it happy, lol. I know what affects it, yet over time stuff seems to creep in... Time for a reset.
I also am going to ramp up my steps again. I took a fall a few weeks ago and kinda messe... Mon, 14 Mar 2016 02:11:46 EST Love this Video! This really moved me. I am so inspired by this young girls determination. Tissue alert!

day/
Fri, 11 Mar 2016 15:05:48 EST Mini Get Away I was feeling a little off kilter the past few days, so I decided to grab some alone time yesterday to regroup my thoughts. My plan was to run to my favorite local coffee house, get a coffee to savor, and then journal, plan, and think to refocus. The monkey wrench in that plan was this creeper, some random old dude sitting across the shop that was staring and glaring at me. It made me really, really uncomfortable. When I would look up and catch his stare, he wouldn't look away, but intensifie... Fri, 11 Mar 2016 14:53:05 EST You can do it!
Live your dreams! Just don't forget that the key to achieve is work. I have found you can't wish change into your life, but you can start taking babysteps towards your goals and dreams and you will get there! Let's get out there and do it!! Fri, 11 Mar 2016 03:20:46 EST Let's Catch Up! Pull up a chair and grab a cup of coffee! So much has happened since I last blogged! While there is no way to cover it all, I thought I might try for a few highlights but this still might be long.
When I last blogged, I had just started my job. I am loving it still! I have added in a new dimension in that I am now repairing clarinets. It isn't anything I'd even thought about doing before, but when my boss asked if I was interested in learning I decided to give it a try. Oddly enough, I r... Wed, 6 Jan 2016 02:47:57 EST Well, hello! Kinda feel like I should preface this with Hey, Remember me? Between the new job and a couple other situations in my life I have been one busy lady!
I am glad for my phone, it has helped to keep me checked in here at SP daily!

Overall I am still meeting my step goals (10000 a day) and have been adding to my other streaks also! There were a few short days because I got sick, but life happens and we just pick up and keep on moving!

I haven't taken the time to blog... Sat, 13 Jun 2015 02:14:55 EST Million Step Challenge Day 24: New Job! Did you ever do anything on a whim? I just did. Last Tuesday a friend of mine and I went out for coffee. Instead of heading home afterwards, we randomly decided to head down to the music store we use to check out renting a viola, as the one she is using was lent to her by a friend and it needs to be returned. I noticed a sign on the counter that stated they were hiring, and decided to ask for an application, and filled it ... Tue, 5 May 2015 11:39:03 EST Million Step Challenge Day 23 Procrastination! Busy day yesterday. Almost missed making my goal! Yikes!!! Finished the last 800 at 11:50 because I had been on the phone with my daughter and instead of pacing I sat down as I was tired. When I got off I was talking to my other daughter in her room and almost forgot!! Lesson in that is to finish earlier, lol. Procrastination is something I struggle with at times, and I sometimes choose to put something off til later that I... Mon, 4 May 2015 11:42:32 EST Million Step Challenge Day 22 Pretty exhausted, heading to bed! Night to all! Sun, 3 May 2015 01:56:41 EST Million Step Challenge Day 21 What's My Passion? Made it again!!! 21 days of 10,000 steps, 79 to go! Today was such a busy day! I spent the morning as a judge for the annual Science and History Fair at the school my 3 youngest children graduated from. The Science Fair is for 7/8th grade; History is 9/10th. I am always honored to be a judge and really enjoy getting to hear about the projects the students have invested so much time in. I judged in the history section and I h... Sat, 2 May 2015 03:34:52 EST Million Step Challenge Day 20- 1/5 of the way! I can't believe I've stuck with it so far!! There have been a couple of days that it seemed like an insurmountable mountain to get out that door and do it again. Then I'd get a text, or a fitbit cheer, or read a message on my blog, or get a notification of a new sparkgoodie full of encouragement. Somehow it becomes easier when you know someone else cares, and that they are cheering you on! I am thrilled to have made it this f... Fri, 1 May 2015 03:54:47 EST Million Step Challenge Day 19 Glad to get the steps done, it's been another day of running behind in getting steps in all day long. The blessing side was a nice long walk with a friend to catch up and be able to call it a day! I am thankful for the encouragement! I have a knee doctor appointment tomorrow. I have been a little worried about it. There is swelling and pain going on in the knee I had surgery on last year. It's been happening for quite a whil... Thu, 30 Apr 2015 02:46:14 EST Million Step Challenge Day 18 -Motivation It seems like everyday is a busy day, just different types of busy, lol. Today I taught my pre-kinder guy, and was thrilled to have him sounding out words in his reader. I love teaching kids to read, it probably ranks as one of the best things I've done in my life. I am always thrilled to know that my students have a wonderful, solid foundation in phonics and math to build their academic life's strange to think that ... Wed, 29 Apr 2015 02:47:15 EST Million Step Challenge Day 17 Celebrating! Finished my 10,000 steps! Celebrating health, celebrating life, celebrating our 30th Anniversary! Can I be old enough to be married that long? LOL! Although it seems time has just flown by, it is pretty awesome to take account, look back, and realize how blessed we really are. I think we both agree our greatest blessing is our 5 children! We have weathered some crazy storms in these thirty years, but we are stronger for it! ... Tue, 28 Apr 2015 03:08:31 EST Million Step Challenge Day 16 Just under the Wire! Today is finished! Feel like I am squeaking in just under the wire, as there is only half an hour til midnight! I've been circling around the "inside passage", lol. Living room to kitchen to family room, and then back into the living room again. Big dogs gave up pretty quick and left me; my little dog followed me for a bit and finally abandoned me for the couch. She kept looking at me, maybe wondering why we were not on our... Mon, 27 Apr 2015 02:38:54 EST Million Step Challenge Day 15 ....and I made my goal on Saturday! Fri, 24 Apr 2015 02:53:00 EST My Million Step Challenge, Day 12 Made it! Such a crazy busy day of preparation for the conference that begins tonight. I tumbled into bed about 4, never thinking to post this before that, lol. I actually made my steps in just day to day stuff. No walk needed at all! Fitbit no longer counts it as active moments unless the activity is going on for at least 10 minutes. Most of my steps were in 3 to 5 minute bursts, lol. It looks so funny to see 10000 steps and ... Thu, 23 Apr 2015 11:14:37 EST My Million Step Challenge Day 11 Had a busy day, a good day! Spent most of it working on preparation of decorations for a Women's Conference at our church this week. I will try to post pics when we get it decorated! Went for some walks, and shopping! So glad I made it another day!! Wed, 22 Apr 2015 02:59:36 EST My Million Step Challenge Day 10 Had some hurtful, stressful news earlier today. I was feeling a tad unsettled earlier, but a good walk to finish off my steps helped a lot! Planning to sleep on it, think on it, and deal with it the earliest I can, which will be on Wednesday evening. In the meantime, life goes on and I will be living it. Time to get to bed to rest for a busy day tomorrow! Tue, 21 Apr 2015 02:06:24 EST My Million Step Challege Day 9-An Unexpected Surprise. Sundays are always busy days around here. I play with the orchestra in the two English services at church, and come back and play for the Spanish church about an hour later. Then it's home to fix a meal, eat, and back 2 hours later for orchestra rehearsal, followed by playing for our Sunday night service. Most Sundays I end up with about 6,000 steps by the end of night church, so during my challenge that means I get to enjoy... Mon, 20 Apr 2015 02:51:17 EST My Million Step Challenge Day 8 Didn't get time to post earlier, but figured I'd at least post my woo hoo pic!! Night all!! Sun, 19 Apr 2015 03:29:18 EST My Million Step Challenge Day 7 One week. I can't believe I have successfully completed an entire week of at least 10,000 steps a day! I am a lot less tired from the walking than when I first started; but I am pretty tired at the end of each day. Cool thing is is that so far I wake up refreshed and ready to do it again the next day. One of the neat things so far has been the different people I have been able to walk with this week. It really is pretty awe... Sat, 18 Apr 2015 02:45:51 EST My Million Step Challenge -Day 6
Made it again! At least 10,000 steps for the last six days! 94 more days to go to make my goal.
I think this is the most consistent I've been about exercise in a lot of years! When you challenge yourself to a goal like this, and tell others, there is something concrete about it. It's an "in your face and not going away" kind of goal. It's on your phone, on your wrist in the shape of a fitbit flex, on your friend ... Fri, 17 Apr 2015 02:37:43 EST My Million Step Challenge Day 5 Day 5 down!!! 95 to go!! Thu, 16 Apr 2015 02:03:55 EST My Million Step Challenge -Day 4 Well, this was a tough one! I had a very busy day; but it was a lot of computer work so I was also very sedentary! I meant to get up every hour and walk for 10 minutes, but I was pretty engrossed in what I was working on and forgot! At five I was only a little over 3,000 steps. Yikes!!! I walked a little bit before fixing dinner, then had to scoot out the door so I wouldn't be late for Orchestra Rehearsal at 6:30. We were d... Wed, 15 Apr 2015 02:53:31 EST My Million Step Challenge -Day 3
I am so excited I made my 10,000 steps today! It's the first time I ever did 10,000 steps 3 days in a row, my old record was 2. My muscles are really feeling it, lol. I am glad my determination is stronger than my aching muscles. I am thinking those muscles will get accustomed to the extra workout pretty soon though!
3 days down, 97 to go! Tue, 14 Apr 2015 01:29:36 EST 100 x 10000, Day 2 Day 2: Mission Accomplished!! 10703!!! I am a little achy and sore, but ready to do it once more... tomorrow that is!! Mon, 13 Apr 2015 02:48:59 EST A Million Steps?!? Well, a few days ago I watched an inspirational video about a lady who went to the gym every day for 100 days. Since then I have been thinking what would be different in my life if I did something like that for 100 days... I have been wanting to get my steps up to 10,000 every day, so my thoughts immediately went down that path... say what? Me commiting to walk 10,000 steps a day? I am usually between 4 and 6 thousand, so it... Sun, 12 Apr 2015 03:41:32 EST Thankful in the Storm I am back at my Mom's, kind of an open ended thing as to when I head home. She is having some serious issues that stem back to the head injury from the accident, and we feel it's best that she not live alone anymore. So, I am here until we can get her situated in an assisted living situation. I would appreciate prayers; for wisdom, guidance, direction. And for her as she struggles with the health issues. It's a new area for all of us, and very difficult.
I am pretty worn out emotionally... Sun, 1 Mar 2015 00:17:41 EST Just a quick Hi! My life has been a lot on the stressed and busy side the last few weeks! My health is showing it, a little sickness, a lot of tired. Emotionally I am drained, but am thankful to be home to recharge and at least focus on some healthy eating, and getting life back to "normal" for however long I have for that. Things are a little uncertain with my Mom, and it looks like another trip (or 2) is in my very near future. Possibly another move (a lot of work, but I will be thrilled to do it if it ends... Wed, 11 Feb 2015 04:17:53 EST Yay For Computers and Other Random Thoughts... Haven't had much time on the computer lately, I have been having to rely on my phone for most of my internet activities. It really makes it difficult, especially when I am not near wifi, lol.
Tonight is the first time in a while that I have been able to actually work on a computer, can I just say I forgot how awesome it is, lol. I caught up on a lot of sparkie things.
Let me see if I can just add some random pictures to catch everyone up on my life...

<img src="h... Mon, 19 Jan 2015 05:06:24 EST My Newfound Heroes! I am still here at my Mom's, and I am very excited that the internet is finally up and running! There are truly limitations to using a smartphone vs a computer for many things. I have been thankful for the phone though. I think I would have been lost without it!
We are almost done with the settling, unpacking, and placing of my Mom's things in her new home. She will have a lot of follow up to do things like put her books in order. Did I mention that there must have been at least a gazill... Sun, 18 Jan 2015 03:22:33 EST On the Road Again! Well, almost, I will be leaving here about 3:20 in the morning. Trying to get a bunch of loose ends pulled together, minor things like packing, lol.
I am off to help my Mom unpack in her new apartment. I am excited because it is a day I really didn't expect to see again after the accident. She has a lot of pain, and is no longer able to do some of the things she used to, but I am so thrilled she will be able to live on her own and not in a facility.
I am a little annoyed at the mo... Wed, 7 Jan 2015 18:54:14 EST It's Time! You cannot hope your way to victory!

This is a quote I heard on New Year's Day, while watching one of the college playoffs. Now I can't remember if it is from a sportscaster, or a commercial. But the quote itself really resonated with me!

It fits so many areas of my life. My business, my health journey, my dreams, my hobbies... So often I kind of splash out in effort, hoping to accomplish SO...
