MSBEKANATOR's SparkPeople Blog MSBEKANATOR's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Thankful in the Storm I am back at my Mom's, kind of an open ended thing as to when I head home. She is having some serious issues that stem back to the head injury from the accident, and we feel it's best that she not live alone anymore. So, I am here until we can get her situated in an assisted living situation. I would appreciate prayers; for wisdom, guidance, direction. And for her as she struggles with the health issues. It's a new area for all of us, and very difficult.
I am pretty worn out emotionally... Sun, 1 Mar 2015 00:17:41 EST Just a quick Hi! My life has been a lot on the stressed and busy side the last few weeks! My health is showing it, a little sickness, a lot of tired. Emotionally I am drained, but am thankful to be home to recharge and at least focus on some healthy eating, and getting life back to "normal" for however long I have for that. Things are a little uncertain with my Mom, and it looks like another trip (or 2) is in my very near future. Possibly another move (a lot of work, but I will be thrilled to do it if it ends... Wed, 11 Feb 2015 04:17:53 EST Yay For Computers and Other Random Thoughts... Haven't had much time on the computer lately, I have been having to rely on my phone for most of my internet activities. It really makes it difficult, especially when I am not near wifi, lol.
Tonight is the first time in a while that I have been able to actually work on a computer, can I just say I forgot how awesome it is, lol. I caught up on a lot of sparkie things.
Let me see if I can just add some random pictures to catch everyone up on my life...

<img src="h... Sat, 31 Jan 2015 03:16:36 EST And This is What is on My Mind Tonight... The link is below.

/healthy-diets-around-the-world_n_6446
140.html

I thought these quotes were very interesting...

"To research his 2010 book The 5 Factor World Diet, celebrity trainer and nutritionist Harley Pasternak traveled to the healthiest countries... Mon, 19 Jan 2015 05:06:24 EST My Newfound Heroes! I am still here at my Mom's, and I am very excited that the internet is finally up and running! There are truly limitations to using a smartphone vs a computer for many things. I have been thankful for the phone though. I think I would have been lost without it!
We are almost done with the settling, unpacking, and placing of my Mom's things in her new home. She will have a lot of follow up to do things like put her books in order. Did I mention that there must have been at least a gazill... Sun, 18 Jan 2015 03:22:33 EST On the Road Again! Well, almost, I will be leaving here about 3:20 in the morning. Trying to get a bunch of loose ends pulled together, minor things like packing, lol.
I am off to help my Mom unpack in her new apartment. I am excited because it is a day I really didn't expect to see again after the accident. She has a lot of pain, and is no longer able to do some of the things she used to, but I am so thrilled she will be able to live on her own and not in a facility.
I am a little annoyed at the mo... Now I can't remember if it is from a sportscaster, or a commercial. But the quote itself really resonated with me!

It fits so many areas of my life. My business, my health journey, my dreams, my hobbies... So often I kind of splash out in effort, hoping to accomplish SO... Mon, 5 Jan 2015 19:00:34 EST Busy, Busy, Busy!!! 2 concerts Saturday, 1 on Sunday, 1 Monday night, and 1 on Wednesday! So much fun! I love the Christmas season! Tonight's was awesome, it was a party/concert for the orchestra and their families. It totally brought out the craziness of a group of musicians, lol. So much fun!
Hope to check in with you all soon!
Blessings,
Becky Tue, 23 Dec 2014 03:00:26 EST I have joined the radical fringe? I was talking to a close friend last night, and our conversation turned to another dear friend who struggles with weight issues. They were together last night, and the friend I was talking to was very upset about our mutual friend, as she couldn't even walk across the parking lot last night without breathing issues. When she told me that, I cried. I so understand our mutual friend's struggle.
The friend I was talking to was frantic, telling me we needed to do something to help our mutua... Fri, 19 Dec 2014 20:43:02 EST 10033 Yep! I did it!!! For the first time since I got sick and had my surgery I walked 10,000 steps today!

I am excited as I know I am pretty much recovered! Life is back to normal, well at least as normal as I can be, lol. I have been pushing for this the last few days, so glad I finally made it!
248 Fri, 12 Dec 2014 02:36:27 EST So much! It's been a while since I have posted!
So many things have happened.
For those of you who have been praying for my mom, I am thrilled to report that she has started walking again (last week!) If all goes well, she will probably be able to move to an apartment in January! That is such a tremendous WOO HOOOOOOOOOO! Thank you so much for all of the love and concern, for those of you who prayed and sent good wishes. I am so grateful.
I am slowly resuming life, good days and bad... Mon, 8 Dec 2014 23:54:31 EST One of Those Days Did you ever wake up and just feel fat and ugly? That is kind of where I was earlier today. I was very achy and sore from doing a little too much yesterday, I didn't sleep well, and the pain meds seem to bring me down a little, lol. Not a good way to start the day!
I stepped on the scale, fully expecting it to read a couple of pounds higher at least, because I just feel so swollen/bloaty/something... It is funny what games our minds can play with us because the scale read exactly the sam... Mon, 3 Nov 2014 18:56:38 EST 796 Days Ago... 2 years, 66 days.

That is the amount of time that has passed since I joined SparkPeople. I have managed to spin the Sparkwheel 555 of those days, which is 70% of the time.
If I were looking at that number academically, I personally would have been distraught over my grade. But isn't it funny how numbers don't really define life? Isn't that the same lesson I had to learn about the scale? As the number on the scale doesn't define who I am, neither does the number of "log in" ... Wed, 29 Oct 2014 05:46:43 EST Excited! I was able to get out today! It was the first trip since September 26 that wasn't a Doctor visit, lol.

My awesome guy came home from errands this morning and offered to just go for a ride so I could get out, and so off we went. It feels like forever since we have had a date, lol. (and yep, after almost 30 years, we still go on dates, and I love it!)

We drove up to one of the "apple countries" near here, a lovely scenic route on Oak Glen Road near Yucaipa. The weather wa... Sun, 26 Oct 2014 03:59:53 EST My Mom, and other updates... My sister recently sent this picture of my Mom. I was so excited to see how good she looks!!

My mom saw her doctors yesterday, and they evaluated the leg and hip. She is scheduled to have surgery early this morning to remove the external pins that were being used to brace the leg. They actually are in the bone, and protrude up through the leg, and several inches above it. It is kind of a scary looking c... Thu, 23 Oct 2014 03:29:43 EST One the road again! I had my follow up appointment with the surgeon yesterday. He was very pleased with my progress, and said I could resume my regular activities... just not all on the same day. ;) We are back on this health journey road again!

He said "slowly"... which is a word I usually don't like unless I am savoring something like chocolate, or taking a walk with a toddler and enjoying the world from their viewpoint.

However, my body very clearly is reinforcing that slowly word... ... Tue, 21 Oct 2014 20:34:24 EST Feeling Good! For the first time in 3 weeks I can actually say I am feeling good! The meds are keeping the pain from the surgery to a minimum, and I have to say that today I feel better than I have in a long time! Woo Hoo!!! It was awesome to be able to eat dinner tonight with absolutely no issues from doing so.
Wow, I hope I never take health for granted again! It really is a blessing to feel normal again, lol.
Looking forward to being released to do regular activities again on Monday! I am ev... Thu, 16 Oct 2014 02:42:05 EST Home Again! My surgery went well this morning. I am happily home, very tired and resting. I am also very thankful for pain meds to help keep the pain at a manageable level, and for cold packs to place over the incisions.
Thanks to all for your sweet comments, goodies, and for your thoughts and prayers.
I have been placed on the "Don't do anything" list til after I follow up with my Doctor on Monday. I have been putting off writing this blog, mainly because I don't really like to think about it, lol. To continue this story my life is writing: I did the follow up with the GI doctor after having to go to the ER last weekend.
She ordered bloodwork on my liver (9 vials, yikes!) My slightly elevated (ER Doc's words) liver enzymes were 5 times higher than normal according to the GI doc.
She also referred me to another specialist regarding the gallstones, and the outcome of that appoi... Mon, 13 Oct 2014 04:09:34 EST On the Flip Side... This has been a crazy 10 days. I am not sure if I have ever had a bug like this one... Dr visits, ER trips; and now finally it's been 24 hours since I have vomited! That part is a big woo hoo!!!! After spending several hours in the ER yesterday getting tested, medicated and rehydrated, I woke up today feeling a lot better. Can't say it's great yet, but hey, we are on the way. I am thankful for the anti nausea meds, they are making life a lot better. My stomach hurt when I ate some crackers a... Mon, 6 Oct 2014 00:32:08 EST Down for the Count....But NOT Out! Friday night threw me for a loop. I'd been feeling a little off all day, but not enough to really think about it. My awesome guy and my younger son decided that it would be a nice change to go out to dinner, and we had an enjoyable time. 4 My guy and I stuck with the healthier option of steak and steamed broccoli, and though we did enjoy a few chips and salsa, it was minimal. (and that is a victory in itself!) 43
About half an hour after we got home I was in utter... Tue, 30 Sep 2014 18:31:03 EST Well That's That! I synced my fitbit to my phone about 10 tonight, and realized that my day had been very sedentary, and I hadn't even walked 4000 steps. My goals are a minimum of 5000 steps, and shooting for 10000 daily. Sometimes it's a tad more difficult with the knee, but I am hoping the continued weight loss will help with that issue too.
Anyways, I decided I wouldn't go to bed til I at least reached my 5000 steps, so I started walking away. In the house. Around and around and around the circuit of ... Thu, 25 Sep 2014 03:22:02 EST Finally, an Update! As many of my Sparkfriends probably noticed, we got home late Monday evening. It was a long drive, lol. They moved my Mom to a Skilled Nursing Facility on Thursday, and she has adjusted really well to it so far. She is doing really well with the recovery so far, which I see as answers to a lot of prayers. She is however non-weight bearing until her legs heal further, probably another 4 to 5 weeks. We are praying about the insurance, as they are saying they will only cover 9 days of the SNF. I... Wed, 17 Sep 2014 19:28:27 EST And the saga continues.... Mom is in her 2nd surgery as I am writing, she has at least 2 more to go. She is still in the surgical trauma unit, but thankfully she is out of icu. :) The other thankfully is that these surgeries are repair surgeries, not life saving ones. Any little thing is a good thing, and the fact that she is stable enough to do these surgeries is a major blessing!

We did get a difficult report yesterday. The doctors are not optimistic about her being able to live independently anymore, and ... Fri, 5 Sep 2014 17:18:46 EST Wasn't Expecting This... Got the phone call that those of us who live a distance from family dread. My sister called Sunday night to tell me my mom had been in an accident. She is pretty badly hurt and is currently in the icu. We are leaving in a few hours to go be with her. If you are among my Sparkfriends who pray, please pray for her. Thanks!

My mom's car.... Tue, 2 Sep 2014 03:52:28 EST I can't believe it! I am so excited. My daughters spoiled me with a fitbit flex tonight! I have been wanting an activity tracker, but keep talking myself out of getting one, lol. What an awesome surprise, I am looking forward to adding this new tool into the arsenal for my health journey!
Sun, 31 Aug 2014 03:29:52 EST The Scale, The Scale, and NSV's I recently got a nice new scale to use in my bathroom, which is awesome because I don't have to traipse down the hall to use the one in the kids bathroom anymore. I was pretty excited about it until....
I found out that there is a three pound difference between my nice new scale, and the old one.

WHAT! Who could do this to me? Of course the one in my bathroom shows the heavier weight, sigh....

Fortunately, I quickly remembered that this is the truth about scales..... Thu, 28 Aug 2014 21:30:48 EST Happy National Dog Day! I looked at instagram a little while ago, and there were about 1.5 million posts that were labeled #nationaldogday.
While I didn't look at all of them, I still figure my little dog is about the cutest one out there. 20
I figure that might be disputed by every other dog owner, but oh well, I'm the one writing this blog, lol.

So I am celebrating my little dog Trixie! (and hoping that all of you that are blessed to have a canine companion are celebrating your d... Wed, 27 Aug 2014 01:47:51 EST Whole 30 Days 9-12 Thoughts I haven't posted daily, because things are just going so smoothly that there really isn't much to say! I am following the program and I haven't been sick once, which is awesome!!! What a wonderful thing to have that out of my life. Kinda wonder about the reintroducing phase, lol. The awesome thing to me is that when I weighed on day 10, I was down 6 pounds from the start of this. It's a wonderful side benefit, as I didn't pick this for weight loss, but to get my eating cleaned up and figure o... Wed, 20 Aug 2014 18:00:31 EST Hey Dee! Thought This Was Awesome Loved this little cabin perched on the edge of nowhere! It is in the "town" of Lucia on Highway 1. Lucia is a little stop off with a restaurant, a store, some rental cabins, and this cabin. I didn't see any other homes, but maybe there were some perched lower than we could see? I think the coolest thing was the fact that they had a garden growing out there. What a place to work a garden, lol. I think I would spend too much time looking at the view....

<img src="http://photos-ak.sp... Sun, 17 Aug 2014 02:00:24 EST Whole 30 Day 8 Thoughts Wonderful day on the program. Only thing was figuring which veggies add the most fiber to your diet after I finished a couple of meals and realized I was low on fiber for the day. Yay carrots, lol. Love the fact that there is something new to learn in life every day. We live in such an amazing world of readily available information. Pretty awesome to have the whole world at your fingertips when you are trying to learn something...

Have a blessed night!!

Becky Sun, 17 Aug 2014 01:47:22 EST Some views of our trip home... Highway 1 I thought I would share some random pictures from our trip home, mainly for those of my Sparkfriends that haven't had the opportunity to take this route. It is well worth it, if you ever get the chance, all I can say is DO IT! Every time I go I am enthralled by the breathtaking scenery. This time i was amazed yet again at the people biking it. That would be an incredible journey, as you would see so much more than whizzing by in a car, but I personally would be afraid of the cars going by. Th... Sat, 16 Aug 2014 00:52:50 EST Whole 30 Day 5-7 Can you believe a week is done! Wow! Time has surely flown by!!

I finished out my first week sticking to the program with one exception. That exception was the addition of some milk to my iced coffee as we were driving home. I really needed the caffeine, as I was already dragging and it was a long drive back. The coffee was really strong and bitter, and as I had no coconut milk with me, and no store close by, I opted for milk. In all reality it made 0 difference nutrition wise, bu... Fri, 15 Aug 2014 23:22:41 EST Whole 30 Day 4 Thoughts Just a short update as we are on the road. As I figured, I have been able to find the foods that I needed on the road. I did bring some healthy snacks (veggies, fruits, almonds) to make sure I had them if I needed them to supplement a meal. Glad I did, it helps!
That's it for now,
Hope your day is blessed!
Tue, 12 Aug 2014 16:53:23 EST Whole 30 Day 3 Thoughts Today was a little rougher of a day. I woke up a little later than I normally do on Sunday, and skipped breakfast to be on time. Bad bad bad idea!

To help you understand, my normal Sunday schedule is to be at church at 8:30 for the orchestra to practice with the choir. Then we play in the first service (congregational songs, choir, offertory, and sometimes orchestrated parts with the singers who are doing specials.) I leave then and go up to the 1st - 3rd grade girls class I co-te... Mon, 11 Aug 2014 03:55:00 EST Whole 30 Day 2 Thoughts Just finishing up day two of this new program. Like yesterday, I found the program really easy to stick to, and have ended the day with no cravings. :) I did take their suggestion to add coconut milk to my coffee instead of my usual half and half. It was creamier than black coffee, and had a slight taste of coconut to it. So that part is all well and good, lol.

I think the most awesome thing about the day is the realization that I can make this program work in "normal" life with ... Sun, 10 Aug 2014 02:58:19 EST Whole 30 Day 1 Thoughts First, I have to say that I completed the book "It Starts With Food" by Melissa and Dallas Hartwig. I found it very interesting, and it seems like it might be very applicable to where I am right now. I would recommend reading it. A friend of mine recommended reading it because I posted an article on my FB page about Paleo that SP published. I decided to download the sample to my kindle, and when I got to the end of the sample I knew I had to read the rest of it, lol.

As most of m... Sat, 9 Aug 2014 03:18:16 EST It Starts With Food/Whole 30 Has anyone done this program? Thoughts about it? Thanks! Fri, 8 Aug 2014 01:23:34 EST What a Day! We started off our day with a quick trip through Starbucks, and I actually opted for a coffee drink for once, lol. Usually I do one of their tea lemonades unsweetened.
Then we were off for the VA Hospital, to go play for our veterans. This is one of my favorite orchestra activities, as we get to meet so many amazing heroes from the time of WWII on down to those who are serving today. I am always amazed at how much history is represented by those that we are privileged to play for. The ... Sun, 20 Jul 2014 01:22:21 EST So this is where I went.... Thought I would toss up a "few" pictures of the ones I took on our trip this past weekend for some of my friends to be able to see yet another side of CA, lol.

The funny looking trees are Joshua trees.

Another view of the high desert.

More sce... Sat, 19 Jul 2014 02:19:07 EST Happy/Sad Well, I weighed in today as I won't be able to tomorrow...

The results were a happy/sad kind of moment. I weighed the same as last week, and my initial reaction was a kind of euphoria, because when i got home from our vacation/information trip on Monday I stepped on the scale and was up 2 pounds. (don't even get me started on some of the choices I made as far as food goes on my trip; but the biggest problem I had was portion control, and I think way too much sodium since we were e... Fri, 27 Jun 2014 23:18:00 EST Pep Talk Time Well, this is a pep talk I shared with a Sparkfriend, and it's just something I wanted to save for me for when I need it, lol. Feel free to read it, maybe it will encourage you? Hope so anyways, lol.

I so understand what you are going through. I work as a volunteer counselor with a faith based addictions program; and I know what you mean about kicking the food addiction. It's not like we can just quit eating. Fri, 20 Jun 2014 01:53:06 EST So far it's been an interesting journey! I am still trying to figure out this gluten free thing I have to live with now, by Dr's orders, and I must say that it has it's ups and downs..... The ups are all the new recipes I am happily trying as I love to cook. I made an awesome Thai dish with rice noodles and chicken that I probably would have never even thought about cooking before this change in my life. (can I say I love siracha!!) I think my Mom's garden has to be one of my favorite places in the world. It is always changing; yet it retains a quality of tranquility and peace that transcends the seasons. There is something very amazing about sitting in the middle of such an exquisite place, enjoying the beauty of your surroundings, and taking in the antics of the birds, squirrels, and rabbits. I love sitting there quietly and waiting until the birds forget you are not a part of the landscape and resume their daily activ...
