MOSTMOM1's SparkPeople Blog MOSTMOM1's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Back to School - Back on Track For me, the start of the school year feels more like New Year’s Day, than the actual New Year’s Day. Something about a fresh start and a clean slate, new pencils and all that. Back to school also means back on a regular schedule for me, and that’s not always a bad thing. Sometimes, I want to fight the clock during those early morning wake-up calls. And sometimes, it’s frustrating to have to drop everything, to go pick up kids from school. But it’s super easy to find the silver lining there. E... Fri, 22 Aug 2014 15:15:43 EST Bubba Walk: Different Kind of Adventure Took a muggy, morning walk with Bubba and rambled about stuff I’m trying and going to try. Kind of a long vlog for me, but wanted to share a couple of things, in case it helps anyone else. Feel free to learn from my mistakes! (Also feel free to skip entirely.) I’m okay with slow and steady, as long as I’m learning along the way.

I won’t bother restating everything I said in the vlog. Suffice it to say, I’m still doing freezer meal prep for dinners. And now I’m going to extend that... Mon, 11 Aug 2014 19:10:03 EST Accordion Garage Concert: Something About a Goose I know you’ve eagerly awaited the next Laundry Room Accordion Concert. Honestly, how have you lasted this long? How? I regret to inform you that Accordion Concerts are now being held in the garage. Now you know. Why am I sharing this? Because I can. And I think it’s highly SparkWorthy, to share whenever you’re trying and learning new things—even if it’s the accordion. Heaven help us.

Accordion matters aside, here’s a little vacation update. If you read my last blog, you’ll know tha... Mon, 28 Jul 2014 10:25:56 EST Quick Drive-By Blog I AM ON VACATION!!! Woo to my exhausted hoo! I haven't taken any time off, since I went back to work in September, so I'm definitely ready for a break. I'm getting ready to do massive amounts of laundry, so Audrey, my BFF, her daughter and I can head out for a girls-only, road trip. WOOT! And guess what? The guys still have a couple of freezer meals left, so they're set. How about that?

Quick Watermelon Update: Apparently, this is the summer for me to try 14 different ways to slice... Mon, 14 Jul 2014 13:26:22 EST Freezer Meal Marathon--VICTORY!! I survived my first Freezer Meal Marathon last week! Okay, technically, I’ve done a freezer meal workshop before, but this was the first time I did it solo. Audrey and I took a couple of days, scouring the Internet for recipes and building a shopping list. Honestly, the recipes aren’t “diet” recipes. They’re just regular food, made in bulk quantities or prepped ahead of time and frozen. I’m not that concerned about “diet” food. I’m more interested in “real” food, less processed stuff, smaller... Mon, 7 Jul 2014 11:15:27 EST The Giant, Watermelon Slicer & Hokey Pokey in Onederland First, let me explain—I took a much-needed day off yesterday and spent it at my BFF’s (Shelley with an “ey”) house. We made pita bread pizzas, had organic popcorn and watermelon for dessert, while we watched a documentary about the font, Helvetica. Why? Because we’re graphic design nerds and we’re not ashamed!

Yes, we watched a whole movie about this font. Nerds.

<img src="http://photos-ak.sparkpeo... Sat, 28 Jun 2014 12:50:23 EST hOOping again!! I survived the Holiday Trifecta!!! A big chunk of my job involves production details for holiday services, so the back to back of Easter, Mother's Day and Father's Day is a doozy. It's been a lot of fun, a lot of work and it took its toll on me. I was worn out from hauling 22 lb bags of ice, 400+ cans of pop and running down a myriad of details. I had to ice my knee for two days afterwards, but I'm feeling like myself again. Huzzah!

<img src=" Wed, 18 Jun 2014 14:25:02 EST Bubba Walk: Harness and the Gulpy I figure since Bubba is a SparkDog, he should share what works for him, in case any of his four-legged friends out there might be interested. So, this morning, we went for a walk in the park and tried out two new things for my walking buddy.

The pet store had a carseat harness on sale yesterday, so we had the BubbaMeister fitted. I don't know if he likes it, but it works. And he gets excited when I get it out, because he knows he's going somewhere.
<img src="http://photos-ak... Mon, 2 Jun 2014 13:19:08 EST Laundry Room Concert: Oh, wie wohl I’m sharing my first, laundry room, accordion concert with y’all. Aren’t you lucky?? Why am I sharing this? Because it’s my blog and apparently, I can. Plus, one of my favorite things to do in life, is to try and learn new things. This is just one of those new things. Enjoy. It won’t hurt my feelings if you turn the volume off. Remember, I’m a BEGINNER!

Hey, I had some big, Spark-related news that I forgot to share with you a couple of weeks ago. The doc completely released me fro... Fri, 30 May 2014 13:38:24 EST When I lose 50 lbs, it'll be easier to... In my ongoing attempt to SparkClean, I now have a new motivational coloring page and updated vision collage. But first, the big news. One of my friends gave me her mother's vintage accordion, circa 1925. So I get to add an accordion to my act! What act? My ongoing life act, which involves my own personal circus/one-woman band in my yard/house. Coming soon, to a living room near you! But seriously, playing the accordion is one of the things on my Life List. My ten-year old self would be so pro... Mon, 19 May 2014 09:44:45 EST Don't Stop Believin' (Mother's Day parody) Hope y'all had a great weekend. I had an amazing Mother's Day. It's one of my favorite days at work, because we have so much fun with it. I thought I would share one of the bits with you, just for fun. There was a slight incident when I misfired a confetti cannon, but hey, nobody got hurt. It's all fun and games, until the cannon misfires...

And there was this:

Reading from my Junior High poetry journal, ... Mon, 12 May 2014 09:41:10 EST Bi-Weekly Blog? Hmm, a bi-weekly blog, I’m making progress! The best-laid plans of mice and men, eh? Fear not, I haven’t fallen off the SparkWagon. I’m truckin’ along, just having to do my online Sparking in spurts right now, because of work. Today is Day 1125 of my exercise streak. Bubba and I took a walk, I’ll do a little PT for my knee later, and practice my amazing dance moves for Mother’s Day (yes, we have an 80’s dance number). So yes, I’m still Sparking, baby!

<img src="http://photos-ak.sp... Fri, 9 May 2014 10:17:06 EST Spring Cleaning, SparkStyle I'm trying to get back to blogging weekly, but things get a little hectic around holidays. Hope you had a great Easter, if you celebrate Easter. I was taking Bubba for a walk this morning and thinking about a few things. Thought I'd share them with y'all, in case any of you are on the same page. Sometimes it's good to do a little spring cleaning with goals and stuff. That's what I'm thinking about right now. So, what do YOU like about yourself, right now, as you are? I'm curious.

... Mon, 21 Apr 2014 21:52:31 EST Cleared for Take-Off Making progress! Last week, my doc said I could ease my way back onto the elliptical and walk Bubba, provided he doesn't try to kill me again... I don't have to wear the bionic brace anymore; I've graduated to a smaller, elastic one, so I'm happy about that.

Slowly, as tolerated...

I had my first Physical Therapy session this morning and it went well. I have a good range of motion in my knee, but ... Wed, 9 Apr 2014 15:06:26 EST Chair Hooping! Oops, missed a week blogging. Gotta get back on schedule! Finally got a chance to try something I've wanted to try, ever since the dreaded knee incident--Chair Hooping. Yes, folks, turns out it IS possible. Who knew? Doing whatever I can do, to keep my streak alive in a fun way, whether it's chair boxing, upper body strength training, or this--Chair Hooping.
PS: Bubba helped shoot this video. Please note his BubbaCam shots. lol

Hope you have a great weekend and get to do some... Fri, 21 Mar 2014 16:19:45 EST Quick Update--Good News! Howdy! Just popping in for a super quick update to my last blog. Saw the doc Thursday for MRI results and it was--

OPTION A!!

WOOOHOOOOO!!! Nothing was torn, broken, or ripped asunder. Just an exceptionally angry medial collateral ligament. I think this was one case where being short helped me. I hit the ground so fast, nothing had time to tear. What can I say, hobbits rule! I have to continue taki... Sat, 8 Mar 2014 09:45:15 EST Out of Left Field, Literally Know how life can sometimes hit you, out of left field? Well, sometimes that’s not just a figure of speech…

Out of left, (okay, really it was right) field

I like to call this incident “Death by Bulldog.” Wednesday evening, Bubba and I took a 45-minute walk. It was great. The weather was brisk, but it was sunny. I had just enough time to squeeze in a walk, before I headed back to work. When we got b... Fri, 28 Feb 2014 12:07:07 EST Overly Dramatic Bulldog Remember how I said I had always wanted a dog I could walk on a leash? Well, Bubba is definitely that dog!! He's used to me taking him for at least a 20-30 minute walk every day. Most days, I'm using that as additional exercise, on top of what I had already planned for the day. Pretty nifty way of working in some extra exercise. Bubba will help me keep the streak alive!

I wanted to share this tiny clip with you, just for fun. I was working yesterday and just about to leave my desk... Fri, 21 Feb 2014 13:36:33 EST Iceberg, Dead Ahead! Oogah, oogah! Clang, clang, clang! “Iceberg, dead ahead, Cap’n!” That’s what I heard in my head, when I stepped on the scale Saturday morning. If you’re tired of my blogging about my latest struggle with the scale, I totally understand. Feel free to skip ahead to something more entertaining. I’m just trying to sort through stuff here.

Iceberg, dead ahead!

I’ve experienced some alarming weight gain,... Mon, 17 Feb 2014 17:27:21 EST Meet Bubba! Can’t believe I haven’t blogged in two weeks! Work has kept me busy and so has this guy. Meet Bubba, our new SparkDog! Bubba is an almost-three-year old, 55 lb., English Bulldog. He’s our second bully. When we were first married, we had an English bulldog named Phyllis. She was a sweetheart and even helped teach our son to walk. He would pull up on her hindquarters and toddle around. Randy is particularly fond of this breed. I think because they look like him! Check it out—Bubba is my husband... Mon, 10 Feb 2014 20:19:12 EST Upside-Down Thinking Upside-down thinking is one of the most valuable skills I’m honing during my SparkJourney. Know what I'm talking about? This is where I take something I've held onto for a while, flip it upside-down, and look at it from a different perspective. Take my Secret Power of Awesome.

urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=5250600

I’m not allowed to say anything negative about myself. Changing the way I spoke and thought about myself was a huge... Sun, 19 Jan 2014 21:24:47 EST Day 1000 (with a little help from my friends) Friday marked Day 1,000 of my exercise streak, but I’m just now getting a chance to blog about it. Woo to my Sparky hoo! No big parties, no lavish productions. My best-laid plans went slightly askew, which prompted me to fall back on my trusty elliptical. But you know what? That totally worked, made perfect sense, actually. Because if I’ve learned anything in the last 1,000 days, it’s that you have to choose to keep going, even when plans go slightly askew. That’s how Day 1 leads to Day 1,000... Mon, 6 Jan 2014 19:11:50 EST Just a Few Christmasy Things Howdy, Sparkers!
I'm neck-deep in tech stuff this week, but I had to show you something that popped up on the radio this morning. I drive Randy's car in the mornings when I drop Audrey off at school. He has satellite radio with one of those display monitors. Sometimes, it cuts off part of the song title. I had to pull over to take a picture of this one, because I thought SparkWorld could relate.

I do too... Thu, 19 Dec 2013 17:20:07 EST Snowy Walk Nothing big or important, just a snowy walk through the neighborhood. Gotta get out while you can!

Spark ON, Brave Sparkers! Mon, 9 Dec 2013 16:56:39 EST Community Matters I haven’t blogged in a couple of weeks. There was one week I barely even did status updates. There’s a reason for that. It’s been a rough couple of weeks. But there’s something that I’m taking away from it and I think it’s SparkWorthy enough to share. It’s something I already knew, but have an even deeper appreciation for now.

Community matters. I’m not talking about your town, or where you live, necessarily. I mean real community— people you do life with. These last couple of wee... Mon, 2 Dec 2013 11:41:30 EST Minor Adjustments Wow, can’t believe I’m just now making time to blog this week. It’s been chock full of work and play (sometimes, simultaneously). Tuesday was Election Day and I decided to walk to the polls. It’s not that far, a couple of miles to the library. It was a beautiful fall morning, perfect day for that kind of walk. So, I walked to the library, voted, headed to the grocery store and then hoofed it back home. It was a 90-minute walk and I ended up with over 16,000 steps that day.
<img src="ht... Sat, 9 Nov 2013 09:31:43 EST Revamping The Streak Thank you SO much for all the friendly feedback from my last vlog! I knew you’d be helpful; that’s why I posted my dilemma. I got some really great advice and it’s helping me think things through some more. Yes, I over-think things sometimes. Often. Regularly. What can I say, the wheels are always turning.

This is what my brain feels like sometimes. I wish thinking hard burned calories. I’d be on the cover of... Mon, 28 Oct 2013 13:49:53 EST Contemplating Breaking My Streak (with video this time) Okay, I'll try posting this again and see if the video comes through this time... Sparkgremlins at work?

Yes, you read that correctly, I’m contemplating breaking my exercise streak. Not today. Today was Day 926 and I took an hour-long walk in the park. Today was a great day to streak. No, I’m contemplating breaking my streak at Day 1,000.

If you’re late to the party, here are my streaking rules: At least ten minutes of intentional exercise (not just walking around the gr... Mon, 21 Oct 2013 20:00:11 EST Not Quite the Plank Warrior... I planned on walking and vlogging this morning; had something I wanted to bounce off y'all. But it's grey and rainy, so i'll chug along on the elliptical today and take a walk with y'all on Monday instead. I love walking outside in the fall, here in Ohio. It's absolutely beautiful right now, with all the leaves changing. We didn't have a lot of trees where I grew up and the ones that did seemed to drop their leaves overnight. So, Fall is still a novelty to me and I love it.

Know w... Sat, 19 Oct 2013 11:20:58 EST Planking with Pudding This is, quite possibly, my shortest blog ever. But I wanted to shout a victorious WOOHOO about the planking challenge I posted in my last blog. I can actually do a one-minute plank. I had no idea I could do that. Isn't it fun when you can surprise yourself?

Planking with Pudding provides extra motivation. If you fall, you squish the pig. Squishing pigs is highly frowned upon in this house.

Spark ON... Fri, 11 Oct 2013 13:18:47 EST World Hoop Day Woohoo Happy World hOOp Day!!! (Yes, it's a thing, a real thing.) In honor of today's hoopiness, I decided to try to learn a move I've been attempting for a couple of years. It's moving the hoop from your waist, to chest, to shoulders, then up to your hand. I've never been able to come close. Then, one of my hooping SparkBuddies (CIRCULARPRAISE) posted a video on her page and it made a little more sense. So, I tried and--BAM--I'm sorta, kinda, close to doing it! I'm gonna keep trying, to see if I ca... Sat, 5 Oct 2013 12:29:03 EST Heart Rate hOOping This morning, I decided to head out to the park to do a little hooping. I was chained to my desk all last week and I needed to get out and see some blue sky. Lately, I've been wearing a heart rate monitor while I workout, so I can make sure I'm working hard enough (and not too hard, at the same time). Just for fun, and because I was curious, I wore a heart rate monitor while I hooped, just to see what would happen. It confirmed what I already knew--hooping can be really good cardio, if you pu... Mon, 23 Sep 2013 15:05:44 EST Secret Power of Awesome Recharge Occasionally, I need to stop and recharge my Secret Power of Awesome. This was one of those weeks. (If you don’t know what my Secret Power of Awesome is, here’s the vlog that explains it:

urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=5250600
)

Anywho, I caught myself thinking a few disheartening thoughts after seeing myself in a few recent videos and pics. I thought, “Oh my gosh, I have such a loooooong way to go. Will I ever get out of this ... Fri, 20 Sep 2013 10:43:38 EST Jezebel, My New Motivational Weight Loss Coach I want to introduce you to Jezebel, my new motivational weight loss coach. Is Jezebel my new personal trainer, workout buddy, or fitness instructor? Nope. She’s the ancient lift I use to get up to the ceiling to adjust lighting instruments at work. She is a small, angrily noisy, piece of machinery. And let me just tell you, when you get around 20 feet in the air, she starts to do the equivalent of a steampunk samba. No, I don’t have a problem with heights. Yes, I’m well under the weight limit... Wed, 11 Sep 2013 23:33:37 EST Monday Morning Mojo! Yippee, Mondays are my new day off, so that makes it a fun day for me now. I just finished a big project and am getting ready to start several more. I felt like I needed to get out of the house, blow out the cobwebs, and get my mojo up and running. So, I took a quick drive to the nearest park and had an exceptionally nice walk on a beautiful morning. Side note: Wow, there were a LOT of shirtless senior citizen dudes out running. A lot. Who knew? More power to them. Rock on, dudes!

... Mon, 9 Sep 2013 11:30:28 EST Quick Update Thanks for all the helpful, encouraging comments on my last blog. I really appreciate them! We just keep on keeping on, right? Hey, I have some exciting news I want to share with y'all. It's a little off-SparkTopic, but not really. I'm going back to work! Actually, I'm going back to my old job that I held for almost ten years. For the past couple of years, I've been doing freelance video editing because I needed to be able to spend more time at home, to help my son graduate and stuff. It's be... Sun, 1 Sep 2013 22:32:56 EST Dancing Around Numbers I had to post a weight gain this week. This is not, however, the end of the world. The sky is still blue, the sun is shining and, as far as I can tell, the earth is still spinning. Whenever I have a weight gain, I change the little sticker on my Wii calendar to a heart and I say aloud, “I still love myself. It’s all good.” This helps me remember that, while numbers are important, I can’t let them be the only thing that gives me satisfaction or motivation. So, I go ahead and post that weight g... Sat, 24 Aug 2013 12:56:22 EST Stunt Double Every once in awhile, I have a Creative Journal entry that I share on Spark. This one was too outrageous not to post. All silliness aside, I still have a long way to go on my weight loss journey. So it behooves me (yes, I just used the word “behooves”) to focus on what I CAN realistically and safely do, rather than what I can’t. Slow and steady may not be glamorous and doesn’t usually make it onto a magazine cover, but it will get me where I want to be. Eventually. I’ll leave the crazy stuff ... Fri, 16 Aug 2013 09:55:15 EST 30,000 Steps to GLORY! This is a Group Woohoo Moment! Saturday was an epic day for me and some of my friends. A while back, my buddy Tom (STEELERTOM) said he was going to earn his 30,000 Steps in a Day FitBit badge. I said, “Oh, wait ‘til my neck injury heals and we can do it together!” He was patient and waited practically the whole summer. Next, we roped Shelley (SHELLEYHOWARD) and ‘Ricka (MOONSTREAM) into joining us. And then we decided this was too good to keep to ourselves, so we put it out on SparkPeople and ... Sun, 11 Aug 2013 22:14:07 EST SparkMail is Fun! I know I just blogged a couple of days ago. Don’t want to be a pest, but I just had to show you something that a SparkBuddy sent me in the mail this weekend. It’s just so much fun. Thank you, SNOWYOGA!!!

hOOping Ronald-how cute is this??

Also, as I mentioned in the vlog, Tom, Shelley and I are planning on earning our 30,000 Steps in a Day FitBit badge this Saturday (Aug. 10). We may even have some m... Mon, 5 Aug 2013 09:45:24 EST Parcourse! Yesterday morning, Shelley, her daughter and I, went back to the park and made a valiant attempt at the Parcourse Fitness Trail. Valiant. Like, you will watch this video and be amazed at our athletic prowess. You may even ask yourself, “Why aren’t they in the Olympics?” The answer is, “Because we don’t want to give up our pro status.” We tried really hard at every station. Some of them were just beyond us. Some of them had to be modified for my neck and Shelley’s back. But we tried. We really... Fri, 2 Aug 2013 11:43:20 EST Friday at the Park Last Friday morning, some of the girls from hOOp class decided to meet at the park to play. I talked my BFF (Shelley with an “ey”) into meeting us there and we made a whole morning of it. We goofed around with the hoops for about an hour; it was particularly fun when the fountains came on right under us. LOL. Then Shel and I took a walk in the park for about an hour and a half or so. I have a good ten years on Shelley, so she has to slow down for me. She’s patient, most of the time... :) It w... Mon, 29 Jul 2013 08:35:30 EST Walking with Dad: Puff the Magic Dragon If you can carve out ten minutes of your time, to take a walk with me and my dad, I think it'll be worth it. I've shared before about what a great role model dad is for me and I mean it; he really is. Both of my parents have always been perpetually young at heart, always ready for an adventure, willing to try new things, to keep learning. What a great gift that is for me and my brother! That open-minded, "could be something really great right around the corner" attitude was an amazing way to ... Fri, 26 Jul 2013 14:05:56 EST Spark on the GO: BrookHollow Park Well, it's taken about two days for me to wrestle this vlog off my phone and onto my dad's computer, so I could post. Hint--Dropbox mobile app can be your friend, when it wants to be. I'm still in TX for a couple of more days and I wanted to send a shout-out while I was here. I have been sparking on the go; today is Day 833 and it was a two- mile walk with dad. We walked three miles yesterday and recorded a vlog together. He tells a really cute story; I think you'll like it. Other than that, ... Thu, 18 Jul 2013 17:15:42 EST Rain Check on the Bike Ride Well, I planned on shooting a fun little bike ride vlog to the library yesterday, but was stopped by my exploding bike. Okay, “exploding” may be a tiny exaggeration, but it was close! The brakes and chain kept falling off, actually falling off and onto the ground. This is not conducive to safe bike riding. My journal entry happened to be making something with, or inspired by, bicycles. So, I scratched the video and made this photo collage of my futile attempt at bike repair.
<img src="h... Wed, 10 Jul 2013 21:10:14 EST Pretty Routine Stuff Well, another week has rolled around. I was waiting to see if anything noteworthy happened, so I’d have something to blog about. Um, not really. It’s been a pretty routine week. I had a rush editing job, so I’ve been a little incommunicado. But, other than that, pretty much business as usual. I suppose I could post the video where I drew my creative journal entry with my toes, but nah, I’ll spare you. :)

In fitness-related news, I was finally able to add some light strength trainin... Fri, 5 Jul 2013 16:39:37 EST Group Step Through - hOOp class :) Sharing a little slice of hOOp class with y'all. Yesterday was our last class for the summer. We're going to attempt some Friday morning hoop jams in a park, but this was the last organized class 'til fall. So we decided to attempt a Group Step Through. It was fun. The rest of the class was freestyle; Leslie gave us a break from pushups and crunches for one night. It felt good to be back, after a couple of months of having to take it super easy. I was still careful, though!

Hope yo... Wed, 26 Jun 2013 12:05:22 EST SparkRandom with a Washboard Okay, I’m the first to admit that this lil video clip seems random. It has nothing to do with fitness or nutrition. But my SparkJourney is all-encompassing. It’s about living a joyful life and for me, that means learning and trying new things. A lot of these are things I probably wouldn’t have done 40something pounds ago, so to me, it’s all relevant. Occasionally, I share one of these random things, just for fun. I had practice the other night with the band at church and we’re playing a cover... Fri, 21 Jun 2013 19:14:42 EST It's All About the Hoop Disclaimer: If you have zero interest in hooping for exercise and fun, you might want to skip this vlog. Then again, maybe you’ll be slightly entertained. Who knows?

We get a lot of questions and comments about hooping and I try to answer each one. But sometimes, it’s just easier to show you. Most of the questions we get are about finding a hoop. So, we decided to make a video explaining a little more about hoop size and tubing. This video takes you through my “hoop journey,” show...
