MORROBAYCHUCK's SparkPeople Blog MORROBAYCHUCK's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Day 21 of Arms Challenge
So on Day 21 I did 105 pushups, 70 tricep dips and 140 seconds of jab-cross-hook-uppercut mayhem. I didn't actually hit any thing but it is amazing how it works out you arms just throwing the punches. As you can see, I really needed this month of concentration on my arms. It has been pretty tough, at least after about day 15. It is taking me longer and longer to work y way through the entire sets. I am doing other w... Fri, 23 Aug 2013 00:52:08 EST Challenges For the month of July I participated in two challenges that were put up on a Facebook group I belong to. One was a squat challenge and the other was an ab challenge. Today I will do 250 squats to complete that challenge and 175 bicycles to complete the abs challenge. It has been truly amazing, terrifying, difficult and oh so rewarding. Now for August I am g... Tue, 30 Jul 2013 16:39:11 EST Running Heat at Kern River Trail 2 Mon, 29 Jul 2013 14:54:32 EST Merry Christmas On this eve of the birth of Jesus, I have to stop and reflect on the grace of God. I am so glad that He loves me. To be accepted and loved by the creator of all things is way beyond my understanding. I don't know what else to do but accept His love and the giving of His son to rescue me from my innate sinfulness and my willful nature. It is so much more satisfying being a follower of Jesus than struggling to figure out how to live my own selfish life. Happy birthday Jesus and Merry Christmas ... Tue, 25 Dec 2012 10:28:59 EST Marathon training continues In my last blog entry I mentioned that I was doing a 17 mile run. Got through that in fine shape. I finally decided to enter the Buzz Marathon in San Miguel Ca in February. This will be my first marathon! I am so excited about it. After my 17 mile run two weeks ago I have continued to train, alternating 3-5 mile runs and yoga classes during the week and then long runs. After my 17 mile run, I ran 9 miles last week. My t... Mon, 26 Nov 2012 23:44:47 EST Today is rest day It's been a good week, couple of runs, yoga classes, some walking and a nice hike yesterday. Tomorrow my schedule calls for 17 mile long run, I think I am ready! Sun, 11 Nov 2012 16:02:09 EST Calves are fighting back So on Saturday I went for a really nice 7 mile hike in Hart Park. I felt strong as ever and really enjoyed the day. However, the next morning my calves were screaming and they were still sore today. I was supposed to do a nine mile run today but had to postpone it till tomorrow because of the sore legs. Took me a bit to figure it out, but I did. I had not worn my toe shoes for several months because they needed to be glue... Mon, 5 Nov 2012 23:11:27 EST Resting One thing I have learned, although like yesterday I tend to forget at times, is the value of an athlete taking rest days. Accordingly, I am taking today as a rest day. We will see how I feel on Sunday, I may go for a hike if I feel rested enough

www.runningwithpoppachuck.blogspot.c
om
This will explain what happened yesterday!! Sun, 26 Aug 2012 01:52:15 EST Triathlon time again For several weeks now I have been doing a triathlon every week on Thursday. I do them on my own at the gym - 1/2 mile in the swimming pool, 12 miles on the Spin bike and then a 5K run. I couldn't help but notice though that at the San Luis Obispo 'sprint' triathlon the bike portion was 16 miles, so I may change to that distance. At any rate I did my triathlon today and felt pretty good about it. When I do these I wear my Polar heart rate watch throughout the entire triathlon so that I get an ... Fri, 24 Aug 2012 00:09:34 EST Lets journey together It's been over a month now since Charles has been gone. I must admit that my emotions still are very close to the surface. Seeing his picture can release the tears. Talking to his siblings and feeling their pain cuts me to the soul. However, there is light. That light is Charles himself as he continues to watch over those he loves. We soldier on, knowing that some day we will be reunited in a better place. In the meanti... Fri, 10 Aug 2012 01:49:07 EST Here's What You Gotta Do Two weeks ago I had a 41 year old son who was alive and well in the state of Washington. Then suddenly he was gone, the victim of a freak gun accident. Suddenly life as I knew it changed. The calm seas that I had been accustomed to became a violent maelstrom threatening to upset the ship of my existence. The skies over my daily routine instantly changed from sunny and blue to a raging storm. Not even the death of my dad 20 years ago affected me as much as the loss of my first-born son. ... Mon, 16 Jul 2012 21:27:01 EST RIP My Son Yesterday I lost one of the best people ever in my life, my oldest son Charles. He was involved in a shooting accident and could not be saved. I am of course devastated, he will be sorely missed by so many friends and family members. He was only 41 and left this earth far too early. Just wanted to share with my SparkPeople friends who have always been so supportive. Thu, 28 Jun 2012 21:36:06 EST 6 miles turn in to 8.5 miles Today was another run day. I met Kim and Stacey at Fitness Works, the gym here in Morro Bay, where we had agreed to run from Morro Bay to Cayucos. Knowing what I know I figured ok, 6 miles maybe a bit more. After all we run the Rock to Pier race along the beach from Morro Rock to Cayucos pier which is a 10K. It was a beautiful morning, again, as we left the gym headed north along N Main St. At the end of N Main we had to get on Hwy 1 to continue our journey. The town of Cayucos has an entranc... Wed, 27 Jun 2012 21:35:11 EST Running and talking One of my favorite places to run has always been the beach in Morro Bay. Many times I have run from the beach at Morro Rock along the smooth, hard packed sand to North Point which is about half way to the town of Cayucos. This is also the site of a couple of different 10K's each year which continue all the way to the pier in Cayucos. Today I met up with Kim and Stacey for the five mile loop to North Point and back. A nice morn... Wed, 27 Jun 2012 01:23:31 EST Don't be afraid to change it up It is really easy to get in to a rut. This is true in life in many areas and certainly it applies when talking about physical activity in the pursuit of fitness. We all have favorite activities and tend to do them on a regular basis. We have a favorite class at the gym so we do it three times a week. We like to run so we run 4 or 5 times a week. We have a set of certain weight routines and do them the same way at every workout. After a while our bodies get used to the routine and when y... Fri, 22 Jun 2012 15:34:22 EST My name is Chuck and I am an addict OK, that may be a little strong, or is it? Maybe my readers can help me figure it out.

I had a conversation with my friends Kim and Stacey this morning. We were discussing how much we loved to work out and Stacey said, "It's like I can't stop, I just have to work out" Imperfect quote, but you get the idea. So we discussed it. I soon realized that that is exactly what I have been feeling like.

I started getting into fitness activity because I wanted to be healthy, l... Fri, 15 Jun 2012 18:15:10 EST The Inner Athlete You are 25, have had weight issues all your life and currently need to lose about 40 lbs in order to be at a healthy weight and don't feel particularly attractive to the opposite sex - you are an athlete.

You are 45, you have always been healthy until you lost your mom to cancer and got a divorce in the same year and you still have kids at home - you are an athlete.

You are 65, you have never really been active and now you find your self retired, over weight with pre-dia... Tue, 12 Jun 2012 14:50:47 EST Sunday trail run Only 4.3 miles today, but shortened it a bit on purpose because I wanted to see what the mileage was on this loop. Included a long hill, 350 ft elevation gain in 1/2 a mile. Very challenging run but absolutely loads of fun. I am coming off of three days of rest hoping that I can rid myself of some of the pain issues I have been experiencing for several weeks. Most of what I have been experiencing has been in my piriformis muscle and my lower abs. After todays run I did feel better, but st... Sun, 29 Apr 2012 17:52:34 EST Let the fun start again So I have taken three days of rest to try and get rid of some of the pains I have been having, mostly in piriformis and lower abdomen. Tomorrow I start hitting it hard again and hopefully remain relatively pain free. Plan is:

Mon - strength, yoga, run
Tues - Spin, pushups, swim
Wed - strength, yoga, run
Thurs - Spin, pushups, swim
Fri - strength, yoga, run
Sat - pushups
Sun - trail run Sun, 29 Apr 2012 02:51:49 EST Prioritize? Yeah right. It's been a while since I have posted. What's up with that? It's not like time is an issue. I am retired after all so it seems perfectly reasonable that I should have time to sit down and write a short post everyday. So lets see, when I'm not sitting in my rocking chair and dozing off, what the heck am I doing with my time? Let's see, running, Spinning, kick boxing, Insanity workouts, quilting, jewelry making, reading, photography, lifting weights, cooking, cleaning house, playing Facebook ga... Fri, 13 Apr 2012 16:01:55 EST Should I commit or not? I have tried scheduling workouts in advance and committing to them for a week at a time, a month at a time. Life always seems to get in the way and I end up not completing it. I am thinking I need to keep it simple, commit to something I know I can do for a short period of time and then just do it. I get plenty of exercise with my Spinning, running, walking etc., but I just have this desire to check a list and see it through.

Here's one I just saw on Biggest Loser last night. B... Wed, 21 Mar 2012 16:50:01 EST Planning again I have a difficult time coming up with a fitness plan and sticking to it. Running is good, running is bad, walking is better. I am not going to stop running. It is something I have to do. I intend to continue Spin classes. I intend to lift weights at least twice a week. I intend to practice yoga. I want to ride my bike, do interval training, tabata, pushups (100) and on and on. I want to run in a race at least once a month. I still have goals of completing a marathon, a 50K trail race ... Wed, 7 Mar 2012 19:39:13 EST Day counting over 2 Wed, 7 Dec 2011 08:40:25 EST Day 63 (Saturday) - 77 minutes This morning was one of those blue sky fall days here in Bakersfield. Jennifer (my step-daughter) wanted to go out for a hike in the hills. She has been sick with strep throat for the last week so she wasn't up to running yet. So we headed to Hart Park after picking up her best friend Isabel. We ended up hiking 3.7 miles along the foothills with some pretty good climbing, although I couldn't get her to tackle Hang Glider Hill yet! Sat, 26 Nov 2011 15:32:39 EST Day 61 (Friday) - 120 minutes Today is a little iffy. I didn't purposely do an exercise activity, but what I did do is walk the mall for about 4 hours of shopping. I decided, executive decision, that since I was walking almost non-stop a good portion of that time that I could count 120 minute as exercise. Sat, 26 Nov 2011 15:29:30 EST Day 60 (Thursday - Thanksgiving) - 45 minutes Got up in the morning and did 45 minutes of yoga at home. My intention was to do the Spin class at the gym since it was announced that gym would be open and that Melissa was going to be there to do her class. I got to the gym and it was closed! Oh well. Off to in-laws for turkey and stuff. Sat, 26 Nov 2011 15:27:24 EST Day 59 (Wednesday) - 60 minutes Participated in my usual yoga class with Natalie. A really good class today with lots of balance poses and strength poses. Sat, 26 Nov 2011 15:25:42 EST Day 58 (Tuesday) - 60 minutes Had a really good Spin class this morning with Condy. I got to class late so I had to try to catch up. Then, because I wanted to get my full 60 minutes, I continued working hard while everybody else was stretching. Tomorrow, yoga and maybe a run. Wed, 23 Nov 2011 11:53:38 EST Day 57 (Monday) - 116 min Today was my weekly walk the streets of Bakersfield day. It was a beautiful morning with bright blue skies and golden fall colors as I left my car and headed down the street for what was supposed to be a 10 mile walk.

As it turned out I took the wrong turn and I ended up doing 8.1 miles instead. Walked a fast pace though so got a good workout - Spin class tomorrow.
Mon, 21 Nov 2011 22:45:01 EST Day 56 (Sunday) - 30 minutes Weekends are a little tough some times. I enjoy spending time with my wife and Jennifer and don't want to spend a lot of time on my own doing my stuff, including long workouts. So sometimes it gets late in the day and I realize that I still need to get in my minimum 15 minutes of exercise to stay with my goal. That's what happened tonight. After a long day I was sitting at my desk working on my computer and suddenly realized that I hadn't done any exercise. So I got up, went and got a pa... Mon, 21 Nov 2011 00:09:49 EST Day 55 (Saturday) - 20 minutes Spent the day going to craft shows and doing some shopping. After getting home I went out for a run. I knew I couldn't go too long because we wanted to go to Barnes & Noble and then I am going to a basketball game tonight. So I did our 2.2 mile loop in 19:49 and that will be all for today. Sat, 19 Nov 2011 19:47:56 EST Day 54 (Friday) - 97 minutes In the morning I did 70 minutes of vinyasa flow. This type of yoga is very challenging for me. It requires a lot of strength and balance and I am so motivated to keep getting better at it.

In the afternoon I went for a run with Jennifer. She is starting to run again after being off for six weeks with a sprained ankle. We did 2.2 miles in 27 minutes, a little slow but that is what she needs right now. She is preparing to run her first 5K on Dec 3, a trail race. Sat, 19 Nov 2011 19:46:05 EST Day 53 (Thursday) - 70 minutes Today was my regularly scheduled Spin class with Melissa. I have decided that she is probably the hardest pushing instructor I have had. She does do recoveries, but the profiles are insane! Heavy seated hills, standing sprints etc. etc. I love it! I really get a good cardio burn in her class, usually 550 -600 calories. In my other classes I am luck to get 450 - 475. Part of it is probably because of the bike, the gym where she teaches has the Keiser M3. This bike allows you to set a s... Thu, 17 Nov 2011 19:51:47 EST Days 49 (Sunday) - 52 (Wednesday) Got a little behind, but no worries, I have been out there working on my streak of minimum of 15 minutes per day of exercise.

Sunday - did some trail running with my buds from Morro Bay. We ran at the Johnson Ranch in San Luis Obispo. I did two loops. First one was 2.4 miles in 25:48, second one (in reverse direction) was 3.4 miles in 25:58

Monday - did my weekly walk around the streets of Bakersfield, 3.8 miles in 80 minutes. This was not as quick as I usually walk ... Wed, 16 Nov 2011 18:40:03 EST Day 48 (Saturday) - 55 minutes Today my wife was in seminars all day with her conference and I was on my own. So I headed down to Avila Beach to take some pictures. I intended to head up to Morro Bay afterwards to run on the Quarry Trail but changed my mind when I saw the Bob Jones Trail in Avila and realized I had never run it before. So I put my camera away, changed into my running gear and headed down the trail. This is actually a paved bike trail and... Sun, 13 Nov 2011 01:04:30 EST Day 47 (Friday) - 45 minutes Traveled to San Luis Obispo this weekend to that my wife could attend a conference. The hotel where we are staying has a gym so I went down this evening to do some circuit training. Here is my circuit:

Elliptical - 10 min
Dumbbell curls - 6 reps - 25 lbs
Tricep extensions - 12 reps 35 lbs
Crunches on the ball - 35 reps
Plank hold - 60 sec
Dumbbell rows - 15 reps - 25 lbs
Dumbbell front raises - 20 reps - 10 lbs
Crunches on the ball - 20 reps <BR... Sat, 12 Nov 2011 00:09:50 EST Day 46 (Thursday) - 80 minutes Super challenging Spin class, did 21.5 miles in 60 minutes, burned 585 calories. I normally only burn about 450-500 calories in Spin so I know I was really working it hard. After about a 10 minute rest, I did 2 x 200m in the pool and called it a day. Now it's off to the hockey game! Thu, 10 Nov 2011 20:33:26 EST Day 45 (Wednesday) - 88 minutes Went to the gym this morning for my normal yoga class only to find out that Natalie had called in sick and they were unable to get a sub. So I ran a few errands, had a cup of coffee, went home and worked on the computer for a bit and then went for a run, 5K in 28:38. After fixing dinner and enjoying tacos with my family I went to the gym for the 6:30 yoga class with Crystal. First time with this yogini was a very pleasant e... Thu, 10 Nov 2011 01:18:09 EST Day 44 (Tuesday) - 101 minutes Today I did my normal Spin class with Condy. I always enjoy this class, she makes it so much fun I forget that I just rode 20 miles+ mostly at high intensity and up some gnarly hills. After a little cool down I hit the pool where I swam 3 x 200 meter with 60 secs rest between. Then this afternoon I decided I needed to get a little running in so I went out for 2.2 miles. I ran in my Vibram Five Fingers which felt great but they are so noisy. Thu, 10 Nov 2011 01:10:57 EST Day 43 (Monday) - 162 minutes Monday's are generally my walking day. Accordingly, I left the house about 10:00 and walked the 2.7 miles in 43 minutes to my favorite Starbucks. There I sat for about an hour while drinking a breve misto and reading my , admittedly, juvenile novel. I know, I know, but juvenile literature can be very fun to read! At any rate, after reaching a new chapter I started out for the walk home. I took a little different route that turned out to be 4.8 miles and took me 1 hr 19 minutes. I walke... Tue, 8 Nov 2011 15:51:48 EST Day 42 - 40 minutes Circuit training, one of my favorite fun things to do! One of the good things about it is that I am able to do it right on my patio whenever I get the mood. Tonights workout went like this.

2 complete circuits of:
Spin bike - 10 min high cadence
Barbell hammer curls - 22.5 lbs, 15 reps each arm
Crunches - 35
Tricep extensions - 22.5 lbs, 35 reps
Plank hold - 1 min
Kickboxing work on heavy bag - 3 minutes (jab, cross, hook, combo, roundhouse kicks 10 ... Sun, 6 Nov 2011 21:03:34 EST Day 41 - 15 min Almost didn't get it in today! Went to a football game and didn't get home until 10:00, after shopping all day with the wife. So I went out and did a 1.2 mile power walk in 15 minutes. Nice and cool so I was able to really move along Sun, 6 Nov 2011 20:57:07 EST Enjoy the journey 2 Fri, 4 Nov 2011 15:55:07 EST Day 40 - 61 minutes Today was day 40 in my journey to see how many consecutive days I can manage a minimum of 15 mins of exercise. Hard to believe I am already here, but I have my fitness journal to refer to and sure enough this is day 40. Some days have been as many as 120-150 minutes, so far I haven't had any day less than 30 minutes. Activity ranges from walking to intense Spin classes, running races and combinations of 2 or 3 activities in... Fri, 4 Nov 2011 00:26:01 EST Day 39 - 80 minutes After my mud run on Sunday I expected to pretty sore come Monday morning. Amazing how well I was able to predict exactly what happened. When I got up and started moving around I realized that my quads were really sore! If you read my race report you know that there was a long steep downhill towards the end of each loop. Running downhill really puts a lot of work on to your quadriceps and I really worked them hard as I love ... Wed, 2 Nov 2011 16:13:02 EST A day in the mud
Yesterday dawned cool and sunny on the Central Coast of California. About 10:30 I found my place at the starting line for the annual San Luis Obispo Mud Mash. This is the second year for this 5K/10K run through an obstacle course and up and down some steep hills. As I waited I focused on my goals, finish faster than last years 1:52 and defend my title as winner of the 65+ age group. (I later found out that the age gr... Mon, 31 Oct 2011 16:16:13 EST Today, what to do? So I ran 6+ miles on Monday and 4+ miles yesterday. Thinking I may not run today so that my legs can rest a little, but maybe I could go for a walk. I did do 45 minutes of construction work around the ranch this morning, but I feel like I want to do more. It's funny how that since I have reached my weight goal I have more energy and want to keep moving. I am trying to be smart about it but I am enjoying my fitness.

Still to do - run a marathon, ride a century, do an Olympic len... Tue, 18 Oct 2011 16:56:20 EST Running in wine country I came over to my friends ranch near Paso Robles today to spend a few days. This is a beautiful area of vineyards, rolling hills, and horse ranches with hawks and eagles soaring above. The long relatively untraveled country roads are so inviting for this runner that I just had to get out today for a run. So I put on my running duds, strapped on my Garmin and headed down the road with the intention of doing 6.5 miles. It w...
