Yes, it’s just a 5K (and one that cost $95 to boot!) but the theming, obstacles and scavenger hunt turned the “just a 5K” into a really fun event that I’ll definitely be going back for again.

I left Friday morning before t... Sat, 14 May 2011 23:07:24 EST 4.17.2011-Next up, Expedition Everest Challenge! I haven't done any races since the WDW Marathon in January. I wasn't sure how I'd be feeling afterward so I didn't sign up for anything else until May. Well, I did do a charity walk but that doesn't really count as I wasn't running at all, we just did a brisk walk pace. So, next up will be Disney's Expedition Everest Challenge on May 7th.

It is a 5K with obstacle course along the way...nothing too hard of course, this is a Disney race after all...and once completed, a scavenge... Sun, 17 Apr 2011 14:37:04 EST 1.23.11-Encouraging the next generation So last night I went out to dinner with my best friend, her DH and my 7 year old godson. After, we decided to walk across the shopping plaza to Cold Stone for a dessert treat...but it was pretty chilly out (for South Florida, 55 with a breeze and dropping) so I said to my godson, let's run to Cold Stone, it'll make you warmer and we'll get inside to the warm store faster. So we ran to the store...once there, I told him, "you should join me tomorrow for my 3-miler" (post-marathon recovery "l... After my horrible outing two weeks ago for my then-longest-ever 18-miler, I was not feeling very optimistic about the 20-miler I had on tap for today. This would be my longest ever training run and the longest training run before my taper for the Disney Full Marathon in three weeks. When I got up this morning, I so so so did not want to do 20 miles. I knew though that I really needed to get out there and try so I finally got ready and headed out the door around 9:30am. Normally I like to ... Sun, 19 Dec 2010 18:00:47 EST 12.12.10-Race Report-Weston Rotary Run for Tomorrow Half Marathon When I first saw the signups for this race, they were running a special-the cost was normally $45 but the special was only $20. I figured, for $20, why not? Besides, the race is right here in my city (and it’s not like this is a huge city, only 26.28 square miles, almost 10% of which is water) so no 3am wake up. The organizers actually decided to keep the $20 special all the way up until the race sold out. For the $20, we not only got a t-shirt and nice spinning medal, as part of their wh... Sun, 12 Dec 2010 16:39:39 EST 12.5.10-18.06 miles and I'm toast 18.06 miles. Did walk/run intervals for most of the first 9, then stopped at home (on my route) to load up full fuel belt bottles, use the bathroom and grab a small pack of pretzels. Couldn't find my biofreeze and then forgot to take some Tylenol so when I was out the door less than 10 minutes later, I was already ouch-middle of my back AGAIN. Easy enough to deal with thru about mile 14 but after that I was miserable. By mile 16 my feet hurt so bad I was contemplating calling for a ride. At 1... Sun, 5 Dec 2010 14:28:56 EST 12.2.10-Loving this weather! Down here in South Florida, we sweat and sweat and sweat for most of the, we are at the best time of the year, our "winter". Woke up to see 50 degrees this morning...and now tonight we have all the windows open as we are about to hit 60 degrees on our way back down to 50 or so again. Feels WONDERFUL, especially with the breezes going on. Gotta love nature's air conditioning LOL.

This weather also makes for excellent running/walking conditions. Hardly worked up much o... Thu, 2 Dec 2010 19:40:42 EST 11.28.10-Turkey Holiday recap So I started my 4-day Thanksgiving holiday out right with a 3.53 mile outing, then had my BFF, her DH and our godson over for our dinner. We order Boston Market for Thanksgiving, so much easier and ultimately cheaper than slaving in the kitchen all day-and we know the food is going to be good (whereas if I'm the one in the kitchen, your chances are 50-50...why play those odds, especially on a holiday?). I did eat a little more than I should have, but most of that my miles balanced out. I d... Sun, 28 Nov 2010 13:52:40 EST 11.7.10-Reevaluating my training plan So today I had a 15-miler on my schedule as part of my full marathon training plan. I’ve never done more than 13.1 so this was going to be a first for me and really my first big test during my training program. When I got up this morning, the weather was amazing-52 degrees with 82% humidity which for Southeast Florida is actually a bit chilly but felt refreshing. It was a little windy with sustained 10-15 mph winds and gusts of 20-25 out where I am. I wasn’t sure how to dress so I donned ... Sun, 7 Nov 2010 22:27:56 EST 11/4/10-My motivation is missing Ugh, I don't know what it is this week but I have ZERO motivation to get out and do my short training miles this week. The weather isn't helping...raining yesterday and today and I've had enough of running in the rain and refuse to do it after the major soaking I had two weeks ago(at least right now, ask me again in a few weeks). Add in late work days and some personal obligations and you get me skipping Tues/Wed/Thu (yes, that's today, just can't push myself to go in the rain and I'm not d... Thu, 4 Nov 2010 18:20:27 EST 10/31/10-Race Report-Miami Beach Halloween Half Marathon Since the race was only 40 miles south of me I didn’t get a hotel. DH drove me down on Saturday to pick up my race packet, South Beach was pretty crowded but he dropped me at the curb and drove around while I was able to get in and out pretty quickly. They must have assigned numbers based on when you registered as I got #59...and we all know I’m not Mrs. Speedy LOL. Bright orange goody bag, samples included sample packs of KT tape, Fiber Gummies and cinnamon brown sugar almonds...and some ... Sun, 31 Oct 2010 18:39:32 EST 10/27-Resting day and this Sunday's half marathon My little toe seems better today...I did wake up several times last night when it caught on the covers or whatnot as it would hurt then. Was slightly sore today during work (thankfully I have a desk job though) but the soreness lessened throughout the day. After taking my shoe off when I got home it's even better. Tried feeling it, the bump that was there last night seems to have either gone down or gone away. The toe itself is still swollen but not as bad as yesterday. Hopefully I've do... Wed, 27 Oct 2010 17:33:52 EST 10/26-Grrr, my poor baby toe! So I come home from work today and am getting changed to go out for some short miles (today was 3/2 walk/run 8X on the training schedule) when I turn in my office and WHACK! My left pinky toe has a rather violent altercation with my chair's wooden footrest. I'm talking exquisite pain...but I want to keep to my training schedule so I lace up the shoes (the left one a little looser) and head out. Not the best of ideas...the pain mostly subsided to a dull ache for the duration, but then about... Tue, 26 Oct 2010 23:18:07 EST 10/12/2010-Catching up Can't believe it's been a whole month since my last blog entry. It's the procrastinator in me LOL. Getting back to some semblance of a training schedule which is a good thing since I have a half marathon in 19 days! Not to mention 12.5 weeks until my first full marathon 40

The running clothes purchasing I did last month was a resounding success. I also added a pair of Aspire bike shorts (for walk/running, not biking, I don't even own a bike...yet) to the mix. My abs... Tue, 12 Oct 2010 19:41:41 EST 9/12/10-LR day Went out this morning hoping for 7-8 miles, got through 7.55. Did not do any run intervals (well, except for running across the intersections which were quickies), walked the whole way instead. Worked on my speed during miles 2, 3, 4 and 5-after that it was just too hot to go 90 degrees hot. Glad to report that while going just outside of race pace the walking has gotten back down to 16 & change minute miles (so any run intervals would just be icing). After my long summer brea... Sun, 12 Sep 2010 18:44:43 EST A Confession, reality check and a full marathon! So, I had a setback during Summer 2010 where I was just worn out from my Winter/Spring training and races and had to take a break...during which I hardly exercised and didn't eat very well. At the end of July when I last blogged here, I thought I had only gained back 11 pounds…turns out my scale was messed up and it was actually 20.2 pounds. I was not only shocked when I saw that but upset and to be honest, embarrassed. Had I really indulged that much? Was I really that inactive? When I ... Sat, 11 Sep 2010 22:15:49 EST 7/25/10-Getting back to it again So, once I did my 10K race back in April I started to get tired. Worn out. I think I pushed too much...and so I crashed for a long while. Only 37.35 miles in May and a whopping 4.5 miles in June; so far for July I've only gotten out there twice (that includes today) for 5.7 miles. I just was so worn out and my motivation tanked big time-not just for the running but for all my exercising. And when that happened, guess what followed? Yup, you guessed it, the food. Not so much the types of... Sun, 25 Jul 2010 13:13:19 EST 4/11/2010-Today's 10K results Today was the Gumbo Limbo Green Turtle Gallop 10K in Boca Raton. First time I've done a race at this distance, all others have been 5K or half marathon. Day was overcast and humid. Wind wasn't really a factor until the last couple of miles when it was right in your face (but it sure helped cool things a little, temps were mid-70s but with the humidity the sweat was pouring down). Quiet route for the most part, some down A1A and then into a little community for a lot of it, then back out o... Sun, 11 Apr 2010 12:40:38 EST 4/10/2010-10K tomorrow morning I'm participating in the Gumbo Limbo Green Turtle Gallop 10K up in Boca tomorrow morning. Hoping the weather will hold up, possible showers/storms tonight and tomorrow. Fingers crossed that those hold off until later in the day.

Went clothes shopping today, just love getting those smaller sizes. No more 22-24 and 2X shirts, 18's and XL's now. Plus am down 2 sizes for the jeans I like (Lane Bryant Right Fit...went from 5's to 3's). So I got 2 pairs of jeans (yay for buy one get... Sat, 10 Apr 2010 16:41:47 EST 4/3/2010-Another good long mile day; signed up for a 10K Had another good outing today. Completed 8.66 miles in 2:12:50, a 15:20 min/mile pace. Did 3/2 walk/run...but did cut back to 1-1.5 min on the run intervals for the last couple of miles---the sun was really beating down on me by then. It was a gorgeous day, started out at 68 degrees and sunny, was up to 75 degrees by the time I was done. There were tons of people out, especially on bikes-counted 233 cyclists, 24 runners and 20 walkers.

Also signed up for another race, this one ... Sat, 3 Apr 2010 14:26:56 EST 4/1/2010-Signed up for another half marathon Last night I signed up for another half marathon. This one isn't until the fall-the Miami Beach Halloween Half Marathon. I'm debating on whether I should do a costume or not. I registered under the age group category, not a costume category.

Once this week is over I'll be getting back to my regular run/walk, gym, rest day, run/walk, gym, run/walk, rest day pattern. I had cut back on my gym visits/cross training for a while when I was doing several races over the past three mo... Thu, 1 Apr 2010 11:30:58 EST 3/27/2010-Great run day Actually went to bed at a decent time last time and got in 8.5 hours of sleep. Had a yummy waffles, bacon and OJ breakfast before heading out to get some miles in. Wound up doing 7.51 miles. It was beautiful out-60 degrees when I started, not a cloud in the sky and a light breeze. 70 degrees when I was done. Started out slow but got stronger and stronger as I went on. Felt fantastic and could have gone a lot farther but I had to get to the bank before 12 and had other errands to take ca... Sat, 27 Mar 2010 13:51:05 EST 3/21/2010-Another 5K in the books; job changes :-( Drove down to Miami Beach again today to participate in the Celebrity 5K. My entry didn't cost me anything as my company (Whole Foods Market) was a corporate sponsors and we had a company team of 10 people that WFM paid for. Was a pretty nice day, partly cloudy but really windy...25mph sustained winds with gusts up to 30mph that we were running/walking into almost the whole way. It wasn't until the last half mile or so that we had tall condos all around us so not as much wind then. Wound ... Sun, 21 Mar 2010 12:59:33 EST 3/7/10-Race report-13.1 Miami Beach, South Beach, FL What a fantastic day for a race! Sunny with some scattered clouds and a real nice breeze. 52 degrees at the start, 60 at the finish. Gotta love South Florida in the winter!

Got up at 2:30am to have breakfast and get ready. Didn’t wind up leaving the house until just after 4am for my hour drive down to Miami Beach. The race started and ended in South Beach; when I arrived down there just after 5am, there were people still out from the night before (a few in some rather provoc... Sun, 7 Mar 2010 14:17:00 EST 3/4/10-Quickie Did a short 2.89 miler today, mostly walking with a half dozen or so short (1-1.5 min) run intervals thrown in. Still wound up with a 15:50 pace even though I wasn't trying. As long as I'm under 16 min/mile this Sunday I'll be happy, especially with those bridges on the Julia Tuttle. Friday and Saturday will be rest days (although I will probably be doing some stretching to keep my right hip area loose). Wish I could stay Saturday night at a hotel on Miami Beach so I don't have to wake up... Thu, 4 Mar 2010 18:34:51 EST 3/2/2010-Yup, I did it again-someone get my head checked! That's right, I signed up for another half marathon. This Sunday (March 7th) I'm doing the 13.1 Miami Beach. Kind of a consolation as I wasn't able to swing the Princess Half in Disney for this weekend. So far the weather looks like it will be pretty nice. For those of you who are familiar with the Miami Beach area, the race starts at Ocean Blvd and 10th Street, wanders up to the Julia Tuttle Causeway, crosses it, then comes back again to end mostly near where it starts. Should be intere... Tue, 2 Mar 2010 13:45:50 EST 2/27/2010-This running thing is addicting For the first 38 and a half years of my life, I never ever thought I would be one of those people you see out there running for fun. For most of my adult life I've been overweight and almost never did any kind of exercise. I participated in one sport-bowling. Granted, I was pretty good at it, carrying a 196 average at my highest point, but still--bowling is not really a sport you need to be in shape for (for the most part). Then Hurricane Wilma came through South Florida, destroyed the bowlin... Sat, 27 Feb 2010 11:01:26 EST 2/21/10-Race report-A1A Half Marathon, Ft. Lauderdale, FL I arrived at the parking garage at about 4:45am...and the line for the only two parking meters to pay for my spot was about 50 deep when I got there. Waited about 40 minutes in line before a cop finally came over and told everyone “no tickets, no towing”, they were taking care of it so the runners would not be late to the 6am start. Yay! So went to my corral and wandered back and forth in the 13+ min/mile area until it was time to start. At least once this race started it only took about ... Sun, 21 Feb 2010 13:59:57 EST 2/20/10-A1A half marathon tomorrow! Been a couple of weeks sine my last blog. Been busy at work and DH was home all this last week. Tomorrow will be my 2nd half marathon, the A1A half down here in Fort Lauderdale. Start time for the race is 6am so I'll probably be up at 3am so I can have breakfast, shower (yeah, I know I'm going to get sweaty but can't go out there without shaving the legs!) and get my stuff together, then drive down to downtown Ft. Lauderdale (which will probably only take a 1/2 hr at that time of the mornin... Sat, 20 Feb 2010 19:41:56 EST 2/9/10-Yucky training day I hate yucky training days. Today was one of them. Shorts kept riding up...wearing wrong underwear (trim was chafing)...shirt kept clinging in all the wrong spots...forgot my heart monitor chest strap...right calf muscle sore...same with left quad (both probably leftover from Sunday's 10-miler...which was great by the way). The good thing? I finished 3.25 miles. They weren't pretty, but they are done-and I'm putting today's outing away in my "yucky" box to forget about. I've noticed tha... Tue, 9 Feb 2010 17:47:50 EST 2.7.10-10.21 miles today, signed up for 2nd half marathon Had a 10-miler on my schedule for today. Wound up completing 10.21 miles in 2:36, a 15:10 minute/mile overall pace burning 1223 calories. It was a totally gorgeous day for it, 54 degrees to start, 58 at the end; 62% humidity. Was just a bit windy though-15 mph with gusts from 25-30mph. Had a 3 mile stretch going directly into the wind. Felt good on the body though, kept everything cooler. Felt good overall...first 2 miles was blah but it always is. After that, it just kept getting bett... Sun, 7 Feb 2010 17:50:43 EST 2/4/10- 4 miles today When I got home from work today, I really didn't feel like going out for a walk/run...the one I did on Tuesday was really blah and I pretty much walked the whole time that day so I was worried when I went out today it would happen again. Total opposite---today once I got out there, I was strong and fast (for me), keeping up a 15 minute/mile pace. I finished 4.05 miles in 1:01:07 and am very glad I got out there. TOM started last night and the walking and running knocked back the ouchies fr... Thu, 4 Feb 2010 18:43:04 EST 1/31/2010-5K race yesterday; Great run/walk today; Starting The Spark again Yesterday I did a 5K race in downtown Fort was part of the pre-Pro Bowl festivities with their Caring for Kids Day down at Esplanade Park. They had free entries into the 5K thru January 20th so I figured, hey-free entry to a chip-timed race? Sure, sign me up! The weather yesterday morning was phenomenal, low 70s, sunny and clear with a light breeze-just a bit humid, 85% at the start. The directions the race director was giving before the start wound up being kind of amusin... Sun, 31 Jan 2010 11:59:07 EST 1/21/10-I might need new running shoes *sigh* So I'm not sure if it's just because these are recovery runs after my first half marathon, or if I need new running sneakers. My lower right leg towards the front/outside has been sore my three runs so far since the half. It's not shin splints-it's like it's achy/tired. I'm only really feeling it on the run intervals-as I do the walking intervals the achy feeling subsides (then of course starts again with the next run interval).

Right now I'm alternating between an older ... Thu, 21 Jan 2010 18:32:16 EST 1/18/2010-Looking forward to my next half marathon! I've spoken to DH and he's given me the go ahead for my next half marathon (money-wise). I'm going to sign up for the A1A half marathon down here in Ft. Lauderdale (runs along the beach road) on 2/21/10. Really cool shell medal that looks like it opens up. Hopefully it won't be full when I can go on and register (cap is 6000 entries).

So back to the training, looking to beat my 3:22:13 time from Disney! I think I can pretty much guarantee the weather will be warmer...and prob... Mon, 18 Jan 2010 22:10:31 EST 1/12/10-WDW Half Marathon race report! (long) Well I'm back from Disney World, having completed my first half marathon. Here's my race report...sorry, it's a little long!

Being a native Floridian, I’m used to the crazy Florida weather-raining in the front yard but not the back yard, “sun showers”, temperatures climbing into the 90s in November and humidity constantly so high that even the most expensive hair products are useless. But never in my wildest thoughts when I hit the submit button to register for the WDW Half Marat... Tue, 12 Jan 2010 19:47:14 EST 1/6/10-Going to Disney today!!! YAY!!! Just 4 hours of work this morning, a stop at Walmart/Target to check for some long sleeved shirts, then Disney World, here I come!

Just had to say that...... 20 Wed, 6 Jan 2010 06:31:01 EST 1/5/2010-*sigh* packing at the last minute Yup, that's right. I'm leaving for WDW tomorrow afternoon and am packing tonight. And the house is freezing, must be 60 degrees in here. Will be "breaking in" my throwaways while packing LOL.

Very excited to be getting up there, I can't believe the half is SATURDAY!!!! Tue, 5 Jan 2010 18:53:01 EST 1/3/2010-I'm such a procrastinator No, not for exercise things. For packing. I did do all my laundry and actually have pulled my suitcases out of the closet (don't know what size I need yet so they all came out). Just never went back upstairs to actually start the packing. *sigh*

Well, I still have two more nights to do it. Really need to do it tomorrow so if I'm missing anything I can get it Tuesday. Sun, 3 Jan 2010 19:57:47 EST 1/2/2010-DH is my hero! Since I use a walk/run method, I had made my own playlists using songs of 3 min/1 min, 3 min/2 min, I would walk during the 3 minute song, then run during the 1 or 2 minute song. I asked DH if there was any way to make a playlist of songs (any length, just my favorite songs), then overlay a voice or sound on top of it to say "run", "walk" or just chime/ding/buzz/whatever. He said he could do that so I gave him a playlist that is 3.6 hours long. So far he's finished 2 hours of it s... Sat, 2 Jan 2010 18:57:33 EST 1/1/2010-Thank you everyone; goals for this year First I want to say thank you so much to everyone who sent goodies or commented on my last blog after I had to put my beloved Winnie to sleep. I am still upset over it and now and then throughout the day it will just hit me and I'll cry a little again...she was very important to me since DH is on the road about 80% of the time (and we don't have kids). The outpouring of support I have received is touching and comforting, and I thank you all for your kind words.

Since today was Ne... Fri, 1 Jan 2010 19:38:10 EST 12/29/09-Very sad day today I don't even know what to say. I had to put my dog, Winnie, to sleep tonight. She had been having some problems with her back leg going out from under her and had been taking prednisone to see if it would help. It did seem to be helping some. Then tonight I was sitting in the living room and heard a sound like stuff being dropped down the stairs...I though DH might have dropped things but he called to me and told me Winnie had tried going up the stairs and then fell back down them (she ha... Tue, 29 Dec 2009 21:23:24 EST 12/28/09-Blah run day Had a simple walk/run scheduled for today-warm up, 3 min walk/2 min run 8 times then cool down. Felt fine in the beginning walking, but starting with the first run interval---blech! Felt out of breath, right shin felt sore...altogether yucky. Wound up cutting several of the run intervals short by 30 seconds or so each and the walking portions were quite slow. Wound up being slower than race pace (avg 16:51 min/mile) and I was just happy to be done with it. Mondays have been harder for me... Mon, 28 Dec 2009 19:15:23 EST 12/26/09-12 weeks down, 2 to go 12 weeks of half marathon training are now complete! Today's LR was 10.2 miles with an average pace of 15:13 min/mile, burning 1247 calories...and I was doing the 3 min walk/2 min run intervals so I was very pleased. I used my new Garmin 305 today and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! It's great seeing how many miles I've done along the way, my pace, elapsed time and heart rate. Plus I have the AutoPause on so when I am stopped (like at a stoplight), it pauses too so it doesn't mess up my pace measur... Sat, 26 Dec 2009 13:19:20 EST 12/25/09-I got a Garmin 305! YAY!!! I got a Garmin Forerunner 305 for Christmas!
