MNBRINKLEY's SparkPeople Blog MNBRINKLEY's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Fabulous Friday Today has been a busy, hectic, yet marvelous day. I began the day with my job performance evaluation, which was great. I was able to celebrate at lunch with some of my best students, the afternoon meeting that I had was with some excellent parents, I had several folks ask me if I had lost some weight, my blood pressure was not as high as normal this afternoon, and I feel good.

This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice, and be glad in it. Fri, 28 Jan 2011 21:43:15 EST Government and Education It was Ronald Reagan that said, "The scariest words in the English language: 'I'm from the government, and I'm here to help.'"

He was truly a visionary...who knew that the resounding words of nearly 30 years ago would hold true today. Being a school administrator, and an individual who values a quality education, I am becoming more appalled and disillusioned as each day goes by regarding the empty campaign promises to reform education, and when pencil comes to paper, education i... Thu, 27 Jan 2011 22:36:39 EST Lunch or Linner I am not sure what to call it since I did not get to eat today until nearly 3:00. I went to the cafeteria and picked up my salad at noon, but two misbehaving children, an impromptu parent conference, meeting at the administration office, and another misbehaving student caused things to come to a screeching halt this afternoon. Consequently that included my lunch. I did take an apple to my meeting, however, I did not eat because it was awkward. When I finally did eat lunch, it was in the p... Wed, 26 Jan 2011 18:46:52 EST New Recipes I have had some kind of fun trying new recipes. My wife and kids are pretty traditional in what they like to eat, and I am somewhat of an adventurer when it comes to creative cooking. I have made several sparkpeople recipes, and the family has actually liked what I have made. Good food does not have to be bad for you. Tue, 25 Jan 2011 23:12:07 EST Not as Ready as I thought I was Today has been a long week. I am already ready for the weekend again. Tomorrow will be less stressful. Mon, 24 Jan 2011 22:04:40 EST Ready for the Week I am revved and ready for a great week ahead. Work is going to be busy, and home even busier. I have had such a pleasant weekend, that I am rejuvenated and ready to tackle the challenges that lie ahead.

Press on Sun, 23 Jan 2011 21:46:57 EST What a Stress Free Day Though I feel unproductive, today has been quite stress free. Besides some basketball games for my 4 children, I have had no where to go, and no major chores or "honey-dos," and it too cool to work outside. Playing the Wii, watching a movie, surfing the web, reading, and taking a nice power nap has made this day a good one. I am not going to think about the fact that I should have gone to work for a while, I should have cleaned out my half of the closet, gone through files, worked on the t... Sat, 22 Jan 2011 16:45:37 EST Habit Formed I have been committed to following the program for 21 days. They (who are "they" anyway) say it takes 21 consecutive ___________ to form a habit. I have done the 21 thing, and I feel like it is working. I have faltered, made a few poor choices, but fewer than 3, and I am now in a groove. I am motivated to be healty...not to lose weight. I am motivated to change my lifestyle in regards to my wellness. I am motivated to feel better. Fri, 21 Jan 2011 18:05:12 EST The Day it Falls Apart If you are here, you've probably been there. We all have if we have ever tried to "diet." It is the day that it all falls apart. You can blame it on a stressful day, a dinner party, a work function, a vacation, wedding, funeral, a holiday, or just on Friday, but that day comes for so many of us. The day that it all falls apart. It may not be a big fall, but it is what it leads to. We say "I will eat a big salad and just a one slice of pizza, and maybe a small dip of ice cream." But befo... Wed, 19 Jan 2011 19:52:39 EST Transformation Adopting a healthy life style is not making mere physical changes in what you eat and how you exercise, but it is an intense psychological process which requires a paradigm shift in your attitude about health and the impact it has on your entire person. Tue, 18 Jan 2011 21:32:30 EST Monday Monday I did not have a good day today eating wise. I did not have tme fore breakfast at home, so I had fruit at work...ick. I was hungry for a while. My secretary brought me some lunch that was wonderful, but there just was not much substance to it. I have not been able to get my daily nutrition in today, and my mouth surgery from Thursday is start to hurt. Indulge me while I whine for a moment. Mon, 17 Jan 2011 17:35:54 EST Running a marathon No, I am not training for a marathon, and I doubt that I ever will. I find running extremely boring. it is not something that I find liberating, like my running friends do. I will never be one that will want to run until my toenails fall off. But creating a healty life style is like running a marathon. In visiting with some of my friends who have done this, the key to doing so is steady, consistent training. People who run a marathon do not start by running 26.1 miles one day. It takes... Sun, 16 Jan 2011 15:44:45 EST The Little Boy with the Big Belly Once upon a time there was a little boy. He was different from the rest because he had a big belly, just like Santa Claus. He felt good about his big belly because his daddy had a big belly, his mama had a big belly, and all his relatives had big bellies.

The little boy went to fourth grade; he was going to play football, and nobody picked him for the team. Someone told him he was "Fat," so he decided to go on a diet. He failed.

The little boy realized a couple of ... Sat, 15 Jan 2011 08:45:31 EST Friday! I love Friday, even though I am off today. I had my wisdom teeth out yesterday, and feel great. I feel so good that I am feeling guilty for not being at work today. I may go in at noon, but I don't know. My current pain med is only 3.5 hours old.

I am feeling really good about my Spark People progress. Tomorrow is my 2 week mark. I have already seen my blood pressure start to drop, and I feel so good about myself right now. I just pray that I can keep up the momentum. Fri, 14 Jan 2011 08:35:55 EST Wisdom Lost I am feeling pretty good, considering that I am 37 years old and had my wisdom teeth out today. I should done it 20 years ago and my parents would have paind for it.

I am going to lose my exercise streak, but i would not really want to cause issues by getting up and getting sweaty. The nice thing is that broth has few calories.

As soon as this heals, i will be back on track! Thu, 13 Jan 2011 20:46:06 EST Feeling Better I have to say that i have enjoyed Spark People more than any other diet program I have done...and beleive me, I have done it all. I like this because I can have the convenience of having on my phone, I like having a range, and the marketing works, because I am motivated by the SP points. I have done this 12 days now, and I hope that it continues. Wed, 12 Jan 2011 23:24:03 EST Pressing on I have stuck with this consistently for 11 days. I have lost 10 pounds as of last Saturday, and I am continued to be motivated. I press on, and encourage others to do the same.
Tue, 11 Jan 2011 22:26:20 EST Monday Freedom Snow Day! Though it is only about 4 inches of snow, it seems to be sandwiched between ice, and the high today here in North East Texas is not to go above 30. We made the call yesterday to cancel school today because of the roads. So today we are in the house all day.

My biggest worry today is sticking to the plan. I eat out of boredom, and today will be boring. I struggled yesterday, but stuck to it. My wife and I have already planned a Wii tourney with the kids today, so thi... Mon, 10 Jan 2011 09:15:54 EST Our First Snowfall Being a Texan, we don't get much of this stuff, and I am thankful for that, however, I do enjoy it when it comes. I decided to cancel church today, for it is supposed to get worse before it gets better. Giving us the opportunity for a lazy Sunday morning. I have spent the morning making Minestrone Soup ( A Sparkpeople recipe), playing with the children, and a Wii workout!!! Good times.

Carpe Diem

mnb Sun, 9 Jan 2011 11:57:38 EST And you have won a BRAND NEW CAR... After you give us $400 per month for the next six years. That has been my day. Last night on the way home from shopping, my wife and I discovered that the third set of tires in a year were worn out on our van. after the second 1st set wore out, we blamed it on the the bad tires. After the second set wore out, we had some work done to prevent this from happening. The third set was the big indicator that something was wrong with our 6 year old well over 100k miles van. I was frustrated, ... Sat, 8 Jan 2011 21:55:21 EST TGIF The first week back after vacation is hard. I need a vacation to recover from this week. I have been so busy that I have not really had time to think about what I am eating and what I am not eating. I have found that I am planning in advance to prevent me from eat whatever the ladies are serving in the school cafeteria, eating a big breakfast, and eating lunch rather than skipping. All these things have helped me this week. I have so much paperwork to catch up on that I don't want to be ... Fri, 7 Jan 2011 16:46:10 EST Busy Thursday I was ready for it today! Got up early, and was doing to exercise, but then I nearly cut off the end of my thumb while chopping an apple. Then arrived at work to discover that several teachers are absent, the computers were totally down, my phone had lost its charge, and a neighboring district has had a crisis.

After I put out all the fires that the day brought, I st for a moment to collect my thoughts. the old me would have grabbed a cup of coffee, a donut or two, and maybe ... Thu, 6 Jan 2011 10:23:16 EST Hump Day Half way through the work week. I think we can make it. I always feel like when Thursday arrives then I can make it through the rest of the week. Almost there-----pressing on the upward way. Wed, 5 Jan 2011 09:53:34 EST Pressing on Today has been pretty good. I have discovered that a big breakfast keeps me from getting hungry until lunch and a big lunch keeps me full until dinner. For the last several days, i have had bacon, eggs, whole wheat toast, fruit, yogurt, and coffee for breakfast. It has worked. A large salad at lunch with some meat has helped also. I have not exceeded my calories or any of the other thing they track on the food tracker.

I know for some people it is better to eat a bunch of sm... Tue, 4 Jan 2011 17:55:16 EST Back to Work Today was my first day back at work after two weeks off, and my secretary is out, and I learned that she will be out for 2 more weeks. I can make it though. I was very busy today, and did not eat lunch until late, forgot my lunch at home, and ate salad from the school cafeteria. Came home early though...whoo-hoooo.

Ate supper, and I am not trying to find just a bit of energy for exercise. It is just not there yet, but I am going to stop searching the internet, and find the bo... Mon, 3 Jan 2011 20:36:30 EST Sunday This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Slept late this morning...arghhh. Whole family was late to church, partly because my sermon was not completely ready, and partly because I was too busy trying to figure out what I was going to eat and how I was going to exercise today...still have not figured those things out, but at least I have not raided the pantry and fridge. Wife is making tortillas a beans for lunch...yum

I am praying tha... Sun, 2 Jan 2011 14:01:08 EST New Year's Day Sickness Can you have a "food hangover?" YES! I have one. Being that I am a "tea totaler," getting drunk on NYE is not an issue for me, yet my wife and I planned a party for our four kids. We had chips, dip, pizza cookies, slushies, candy, and soda. I began eating at 5:00 yesterday afternoon, and seemingly ate continuously until nearly midnight. I have awakened with a severe headache, tummy ache, lethargy, and a general feeling of yuck. However....I am going to get over it, fix a nice breakfast ... Sat, 1 Jan 2011 09:35:25 EST
