MLEBLANC's SparkPeople Blog MLEBLANC's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community What Motivates Me to Workout Well when I was working out, I've had to stop because of an injury, several factors gave me motivation to continue:

1. How working out made me feel, a little happy, a little sore, a lot stronger, and pride for being able to accomplish something that was sometimes difficult, all at the same time.

2. My music on my IPod, that always got me going. It was to the point where I couldn't wait to strap that thing to my arm and start running or cycling, sometimes my play l... Thu, 27 Aug 2009 09:29:49 EST Training Run # 13/No more running! Well, last Saturday I made the mistake of running and it has cost me. I am not prohibited from doing any type of cardio for a week and no running for two weeks per the instructions of my chiropractor. I'm lucky because it is only a 1st degree strain, no tearing or displacement of the achilles. So with rest and ice and a little patience, I should be fine in two weeks. This also means no 5K until July.

The problem is I can't do anything that burns off any amount of calories unt... Fri, 29 May 2009 11:23:45 EST Training Run #12 Ran again yesterday. Don't worry, I took a day off in between runs and will take at least another 3 days off between this one and my first run next week. My achilles is still sore and my pedometer watch is still a little off. It recorded that I ran .25 miles more than I did. I really need to figure out my average stride length and input it into the watch. At one point it was saying I was running 6 minute miles, and I am not an Olympian. It was great weather, a little hot, I got a cram... Thu, 21 May 2009 13:08:48 EST Training Run #11 I ran on Monday and my achilles still hurt but other than that, the run wasn't too bad. I did get a little distracted because I was using my pedometer watch for the first time and forgot to set my timer so I couldn't really tell how fast I was running, which was the idea, since I was running on a measured course. That kind of bummed me out a little. Also, I think I will have to cut down on all other types of cardio while I train because my achilles is not really healing like I would like. ... Wed, 20 May 2009 11:08:53 EST Back to Running Today is the day that I will start running again. I hope my achilles is feeling better and I think I will cut down on the amount of working out I do both the day of and the day after my runs. Wish me luck! Mon, 18 May 2009 11:10:06 EST Training Run #10 My 10th run, or about that, and I have to take a break :( My achilles is sore and swollen so I have to rest for a week. A week without running or other exercises that entail jumping around. I will try to ride my bike tonight and if that works out (I don't have any pain), I will substitute that for my cardio.

As for my run, I was in pain for most of it so it wasn't the most enjoyable run I've had, but my time remained the same and that was good. Hopefully, I will be able to pick... Wed, 13 May 2009 11:10:03 EST Training Run #9 I woke up to a beautiful Sunday so that was very helpful for the run. I was a little tight when I first started, a lot tight, and I don't know if it was because I started out too fast, wasn't warmed up enough or if it was the Cathe Friedrich DVD I did the day before, Low Max (which works the legs like crazy). Anyway, I loosend up later in the run andenjoyed my time out doors. I think I did sped up the closer the "finish line" approached but that is natural. You want to do as well as you ... Mon, 11 May 2009 10:50:54 EST Training Run #8 Because of the chance of rain, I got up early this morning and did my run. It felt good. The sun was out, it was just the right temperture and I was moving at a steady clip. I did two miles in great time and I even managed to get a quick 13 minute per mile paced walk in after my run. I often do this to cool down. I will have to fit my last run of the week on Sunday. By then, the weather will have worked itself out and the rain will finally be gone, LOL!! Fri, 8 May 2009 11:11:16 EST Training Run #7 Finally, no rain, well at least a break from the rain. My run was uneventful, I probably can push myself a bit more but I had a good run. The weather was ideal and I was not stressing about my time. Since I straightened myself out about the distances of my routes, I don't really think about it that much. Now if only Friday can be rain free for about 20 minutes, I will be all set for my second run of the week. I might have to get up extra early Friday morning and carry a hat with me but I... Wed, 6 May 2009 15:56:56 EST Training Run # 6 So I Google mapped my runs and come to find out, I was a little off on my mileage, not a whole lot, but enough to "deflate" my times. It seems like I've been running closer to a 8:45 to 9:00 minute mile all along. That isn't really bad for someone who isn't really a runner. So all is right with the world. (P.S. I'm still going to try to lower my time). 182 Fri, 1 May 2009 13:02:13 EST Training Run Today was a little frustrating running. First, I was not sure of the total mileage of the run, and second, I really had a slow time. That really bothered me. I feel like I'm slowing down, not improving the more I train. It also makes me question all the other runs that I've done that I thought were at a faster pace. I've measured with my car the distance I run at home so I think I have a 3 mile route mapped out. This is was supposed to be fun and a way to improve my fitness so I guess I... Wed, 29 Apr 2009 15:49:28 EST 5K Training When you think you can't go any farther, you can. I learned this last night as I was running 3 miles as part of my training for a 5K. It was really tough, my stomach was aching and I felt I had slowed down considerably while doing my last mile. I was just plain uncomfortable but I pushed through it and actually, power walked for a while after the run. So just push through it and you will make it. Tue, 28 Apr 2009 10:54:12 EST 5 Things I Like About Myself Since I can't seem to "log on" to comment on the Daily Blog. I will do this here. Here are 5 things I like about myself:

1. I have a nice smile
2. I love my family dearly
3. I am incredibly fit, thanks to Cathe Friedrich and Spark!!!
4. My arms look amazing since I have been weight lifting on the serious tip; and
5. My nose is pretty darn cute.

What about you, it took me a while to come up with this list, what are 5 things you like about yoursel... Wed, 8 Oct 2008 11:14:42 EST No More Snacks! Today is the first day of the rest of my life, well maybe not, but definitely the first day of not snacking until my stomach explodes. I have been caught in the snacking after lunch and after dinner rut and I need to get out of it. So starting today, I will be tracking my progress and let me tell you, I am already jonesing for something sweet, chocolaty and fattening. But I digress, I will fight the urge and persevere!!!!! So I can truly say today is the the first day of the rest of my li... Thu, 4 Sep 2008 15:02:38 EST Weekends Well, everyone there is now "scientific" proof that the weekends are not good for diets. Ya think? How many of my fellow Sparkies have noticed that one. I wish someone paid me some money to research this phenomenon. It would be easy cash in my pockets! Weekends are most difficult time for people who are trying to lose weight and for those who are just trying to maintain after reaching their dieting goals.

I am a great example (see I told you I could have conducted the study), ... Fri, 25 Jul 2008 11:11:51 EST Yoga I can't believe the amount of fun I am having practicing yoga. Since I have IBS, meditation and yoga are supposed to help alleviate most of the symptoms I am current suffering, bloating, bloating and more bloating. So when I do get the strength to click on Comcast's On Demand Exercise channel, I try to find a yoga workout that can satisfy my need for a hard cardio workout ( I used to workout 5 to six times a week, step, running, weight training, you name it, whatever got me sweaty and my he... Wed, 6 Feb 2008 17:56:40 EST Fitness Minutes Hate for this to be my first entry in an eternity but I am trying to wrap my mind around the Fitness Minutes Challenge. I can't seem to figure out how, with only 15 days gone in January, some Sparkies have over 18,000 minutes logged in. I think it really defeats the whole purpose of the challenge. You should only log in the minutes you do for a particular day. What happens if for some untold reason you don't reach the fitness minute goals you logged in back in the beginning of the month.... Mon, 14 Jan 2008 10:06:25 EST IBS I thought I was getting back to normal when my stomach decided to throw me a loop. I have been officially diagnosed with IBS, and believe me this is going to be hard to deal with. I have to try to figure out what I can and cannot eat while trying wrap my head around the fact that I won't be able to eat or drink some of my favorite things, ever. Cheese, alcohol, coffee, yogurt. How am I going to get through Thanksgiving and Christmas without Macaroni and Cheese and Hot Chocolate!!!! On t... Wed, 21 Nov 2007 11:47:13 EST Getting Back to Normal I'm finally getting back to normal, not my eating habits, but exercising. My bout with stomach problems still has me a little leery of eating but I am trying to deal with that. What I have been able to do is get back to working out on a consistent basis and with the same intensity that I used to prior to my 18 visits to the hospital (I'm stretching the truth a bit). Don't get me wrong, it is still difficult, especially after an "episode," but I have decided to get back to exercising as soo... Fri, 19 Oct 2007 15:36:06 EST My Birthday! Happy Birthday to me! Because of Spark and all you wonderful "Sparkers" I am healthy, happy, and looking good for my 45th. I can't begin to express what a blessing it has been finding Sparkpeople and participating in all the challenges, meeting new people and making friends, it has just been wonderful experience. Thanks again!!! Thu, 27 Sep 2007 15:10:20 EST I've been sick Well just when I felt my fitness level had increased a notch, I go and get sick and wind up in the hospital. No fun, but it also means I have to start from scratch, well not from scratch, but I have to re-build all that I had gained. Its going to take a while, if last night was any indication. I had a touch time doing a routine that I usually knock out, and using 8 pound weights was all I could do, with difficulty at that. But I promise that I will get back to where I was before this illn... Thu, 30 Aug 2007 15:34:11 EST Accomplishments Today I went to the mall to get a pair of jeans in a size 6. I came home from the mall with two pairs of size 4 jeans! I can't believe it. I have never been a size 4 in my life, not even in high school and I weighed less than I do now. I just want to thank and Cathe Friedrich( my personal DVD exercise instructor, LOL) for helping me achieve my goals. Now I just have to stick with it but I think I can do that, with the help of all the people here on Spark, and of course, Cathe ... Fri, 10 Aug 2007 14:51:09 EST Happy Sparkday! It has been a exactly one year since I become a Spark person and this is what I have accomplished:

Lost 20 pounds;
Went from a size 14+ to a size 6;
Became an exercise goddess;
Went from using 5 pound dumbbells to 40 pound barbells;
Can walk a mile in 13 minutes, and sometimes I've been known to do a mile in 12.5 minutes;
Have discovered High Intenisty Interval Training;
Co-lead two Spark teams;
I am a Spark Community-team leader; and best of all... Thu, 2 Aug 2007 15:56:04 EST Hurray for Me A couple of days ago when I was doing my tri-weekly strength training session, I realized I was having a very easy time of doing Arnold Style shoulder presses with my 8 pound weights. I had been alternating my weights lately, and every once in a while I would start exercises thinking that the weights I was using was feeling a little easy but two reps into the workout, I realized that it was just a dream. But this day it was different. I finished my first set and grabbed 10 pound weights a... Wed, 1 Aug 2007 12:41:55 EST Spark Friend The other day a co-worker and friend of mine told me that she had just joined I was really happy for her and for me as well, another person I could talk to about this wonderful website of ours. She knew that I had been dieting and I think I told her that I joined "this diet website" that helped me keep track of my food intake, my exercise, you know the whole spiel about the Spark phenonemon.

Well I guess it clicked for her because she joined and is doing rather well.... Tue, 3 Jul 2007 14:47:38 EST Skinny Friends Part 3 Well wouldn't you know it, right after I blogged about the fact that thin people could have the same problems as overweight people if they didn't eat right, I get news that my cholestrol is high, and worst still, my ratio of bad cholestrol to good cholestrol is, shall we say, bad!!! Wait, how can this be? Haven't I been eating right, increasing my vegetables, watching my fatty food intake, exercising like crazy. What am I doing wrong? Talking about skinny people, LOL. No, it is partly he... Fri, 15 Jun 2007 16:51:18 EST Skinny Friends Part 2 Well, just when I thought Skinny people had it made, here comes a study that states no matter how skinny you are on the outside, you can be "fat" on the inside. In other words, people who are thin have almost as much of a chance of suffering heart diease, diabetes, and all those other wonderful things that plague those who are heavy or obese.

So it doesn't matter how much you weigh, its how you eat and whether you exercise on a consistent basis. If the one meal you remember to e... Tue, 15 May 2007 15:38:30 EST Skinny Friends! Don't know if you heard a report this morning that was published in Prevention Magazine. It says that we should take a cue from our Skinny Friends. Yes, the ones we all love to envy, those that don't obsess over food. The words of Prevention, not mine. I don't know about you but the skinny people I know obsess over food just like everyone else.

The magazine also reported that we should try to emulate thin people, yes the ones that skip meals and remember they haven't eaten in ... Fri, 4 May 2007 11:46:58 EST 137!!!! Today I got on the scale, after about a week of not weighing in, and guess what? I gained about 2 pounds. Yikes!! See what not weighing in can do to a gal. That, and eating and drinking without thinking what was going into my mouth. Thank God I have been sticking to the exercise part of my Spark Plan.

So the new plan is to weigh myself everyday and get back to tracking my food/calorie intake. Also, trying to find ways to combat the stress and the blues I've been feeling latel... Thu, 26 Apr 2007 10:44:12 EST Community Team Member 4/20/2007:

Today I became a community team member. At first, I was a little hesitant, writing a blog, encouraging other spark members. But as I have become more involved with this site, I have found that I can do this. I have created a new team (High Intenstity Interval Training Team, please join us if you can) and I have taken over the reigns, hopefully temporarily for our team leader, of another team, and I so far so good! The sky hasn't fallen, it hasn't interfered with work... Fri, 20 Apr 2007 11:37:47 EST
