I ran a 5K snowshoe race. And, I am so proud to have finished in 42:37 seconds. I went into this race with an option to run 5K or 1 mile. All week I have been debated whether or not I could even finish "running" 5K though the snow. Even as I drove to the race I wasn't 100% sure that I would not wimp out and run the shorter distance. I have never actually "run" in snow shoes at all.
... Sun, 24 Feb 2013 10:16:42 EST January 2013 Review & February Goals http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5228352 I have had a healthy January. I have made many positive steps.

1. I have been tracking my foods most days. I think I only missed 2 days in January-both weekend days- both days I knew I wasn't eating well and was avoiding being accountable! BUT, I did turn myself around and start tracking again, even on days I went over my calorie range.

2. I have worn my Fitbit everyday....love it! Tue, 29 Jan 2013 08:32:50 EST My observations. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5220729 I have been working hard to stay active and eat well. I am progressing toward my January goal. I have made note of a few of my patterns:

1. I walk more throughout the day when I were comfortable shoes. I have been monitoring my steps with my Fitbit. I have found that I walk a least 2,000 more steps at work when I am wearing comfortable shoes. I think I will need to plan to reward myself with comfortable shoes for work to replace a couple of really uncomfortable one.

2. ... My focus on my own health has been up and down throughout the year. I am up about 5 lbs since last year at this time. I had planned to be 25 lbs down by this time.

Bumps in the road:
1. Husband had completely blocked coronary artery & a heart attack in May.
2. I started the challenge to get myself motivated. So far, this has been a relatively easy challenge. I already follow some of the recommendations, but it is helpful to be conscious of what I am doing (and why) and I do enjoy the tips.

Week 2 Action Plan:
1. I know SP is a supportive, motivating place that assists me in making healthy choices. And I am back!

The last several months have been somewhat stressful and I have put SP on hold. Last spring I was working hard. I was prepared to run my second 10 K race on 5/5/12. The day before this race my husband had a heart attack. My husband is only 45 years old. I had been eating quite healthy for the past 2 years. After the heart attack, my husban... I could list a million excuses: Too busy, too tired, comfortable with previous weight loss, etc, etc, etc.

The reality is that I am about 25 lbs away from a healthy weight. I have been holding steady at 151-153 for months now. With the holidays approaching I gave a fear that I will gain all the weight I have lost ( I started at 166 lbs.).

In the past rewardin... Mon, 14 Nov 2011 09:10:52 EST Triathlon - 36 minutes faster than last year! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4479640 Yesterday I finished my sprint triathlon and I did soooo much better than last year. My results: 1/2 mile swim time - 18:47 (last year 27:11), 14 mile bike time - 1:09:00 (last year 1:31:07), 5K run - 35:57 (last year 39:48). Overall time with transitions - 2:10:28 (last year 2:46:52).

My goal was to complete the swim without panic and to actually swim the whole distance without stopping. Last year I kept panicking and stopping. I met my goal. I actually felt really confident. My... Sun, 11 Sep 2011 22:27:12 EST Swim Panic! Yikes! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4464070 I am not sure what happened, but I panicked on my practice swim this morning. This is a problem because my triathlon is in 7 days! I had been doing great. I have regularly swam 1/2 mile distance at the lake (2x week at lake all summer plus 1-2 x week in pool all year). Last week I did great on a group swim on the actual swim course. I HAD felt prepared and confident. But, this morning I was imagining myself in the race and I couldn't breathe. I stopped about a million times. I am having real ... Sat, 3 Sep 2011 11:41:31 EST Preparing for triathlon http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4451006 My triathlon is in a few weeks. I successfully completed this sprint triathlon last September and I am almost ready for year 2.

The swim - I have worked very hard all year because the 1/2 mile swim was my weakness last year. I joined the YMCA to swim indoors this winter and I participated in a tri swim clinic. This summer I swam about 1/2 mile at the lake with my friend almost every Saturday & Sunday morning. I bought a better fitting, sleeveless wetsuit. I am so glad I went with s... As always, working with special needs adults was inspiring, rewarding, and exhausting.

Now I am back home and on SP again. It feels good to start getting back in the routine of eating healthy and exercising. I haven't done much in terms of weight loss this summer and I need to refocus.

My plan for the weekend - I will be camping:
1. Track foods on SP iPhone app
2. Thu, 4 Aug 2011 13:07:08 EST Small weight gain is a sign....... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4312838 It is time to refocus. I have been crazy busy with work the last 2 weeks. This has resulted in not getting enough sleep, less planning of meals, and decreased exercise. I have also not been checking in with SP. And guess what? I am up 3-4 lbs. When this has happening before, it has been a sign that I need to step back and focus on the basics.

My plan:
1. Log ALL foods I eat
2. Record weekly weight (even when I gain).
3. Exercise 5 days a week (as my schedule is ... Tue, 21 Jun 2011 10:30:18 EST The most fun 5K - with obstacles, mud, and wading in water! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4279466 I completed the Renegade Playground "Extreme Adventure" 5K yesterday and it was an absolute blast. The race was a 5K with over 20 obstacles including climbing up and over walls, walking across balance beams, crawling through mud, crossing monkey bars, running through mud, wading through water, and finishing with a jump into a big pit of mud. The actual run was a hilly trail run.

I ran the race as a part of a team of friends from work. This was the first race I have run and not bee... Sun, 5 Jun 2011 22:58:19 EST Triathlon Swim Clinic Training http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4166565 I just completed a 3 day triathlon swim clinic (2.5 hour each evening) at my local YMCA. This was exactly what I needed. After my first (and only so far) triathlon last September, I realized I needed help with my swimming. I panicked in the swim and pretty much froze. Although I completed the swim, it was slow, scary, and not too much fun. My goals before the next triathlon were to improve my swimming technique and confidence.

I joined the YMCA (mostly for the pool), have practiced... Thu, 14 Apr 2011 22:19:31 EST Preparing for first 10k (and other challenges) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4156724 My first 10k race is just a few weeks away. I am getting nervous. Today I felt like I needed to run more than 6.4 miles to prove the 10k will really not be a problem. So, I ran 7 miles. Yeah! I really did it. It took me 85 minutes, but, I did it! Next weekend I plan to run the race route to further improve my confidence.

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week I am doing a swim clinic for triathlons at the YMCA. Sun, 10 Apr 2011 22:25:05 EST I rewarded myself with an iPad! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4098152 OK, I may have gone a little overboard on my reward for reaching 20 lb. of weight loss. Only 21 more to go to goal! So I bought myself an iPod 1st generation (not the new iPod 2). Partly it was timing, the new one came out and the original is discounted $100 off the original price... just at the same time I hit my big goal. I love gadgets, and this is so much fun. Mostly I will use it to browse the web. It is much quicker than waiting for my laptop to turn on and load. I can access the full... Well, didn't see 146 in by my last February weigh in, but I have seen 146 on the scale this week (early March)......Does it matter if it wasn't my "official weigh in day?" So I am going to call this goal achieved. But, it took forever to get here! The first few lbs sure did come off much faster than the last 5 lbs. I am afraid f... Tue, 8 Mar 2011 14:06:06 EST Not such a good week....time to refocus before the scale goes up. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4047493 OK. This week I have not been very focused. I have been HUNGRY all week. I skipped tracking my food 4 days this week (probably because I knew I wasn't eating well). I had too many sweets and too much salt. I did keep up with exercise (but, I am feeling pretty lazy right now). I have been stressed with work deadlines and went to bed too late 3 nights this week.

Good news.... at least my weight stayed the same. But, it WILL go up if I stay on this track.

Weekend goals: ... Fri, 25 Feb 2011 15:37:39 EST Anyone ever try an "Adventure Race?".... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3984600 Two of my friends at work are organizing a team to participate in a 5K adventure race, the Renegade Playground Challenge. This is basically a 5K with a lot of mud and obstacles like climbing hay stacks, crawling through big tires, climbing a rope web, wading through water, etc. Oh yes, and "jumping over fire" -- really! I am not kidding.... I am a little intimidated, but I guess it will be a good challenge for me to work towards. The race isn't until June. One of these same friends also convi... I am in the swing of exercising regularly with yoga, swimming, running on treadmill, spin classes, and occasional elliptical machine. I am journaling my foods on most days and making a big effort to stay within calories. I had set a goal to stay within my calorie range Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. And I actually accomplished my goal. I ordered a GymBoss interval timer (in hot pink!) as a reward. I just started reading Jeff Galloway's Book of Running and I am trying his run-walk-run method. I gave it a try on the treadmill at the gym yesterday (3 min run/1 min walk). I felt pretty good and went much faster than usual throughout all of my running for the full 45 minutes. It wasn't too hard using the ... Sun, 23 Jan 2011 22:05:42 EST My new focus: Mini-goals with rewards http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3946999 Last week I was seriously disappointed. After my gain of 2 lbs, I had to reevaluate my plan. I was stressed out, over-tired, and probably had too much salt and too little water. I decided to spend the week really focusing on getting 8 hours of sleep each night and drinking 8 glasses of water every day. And.....it worked! Today I was down 3 lbs!

But, I do not want to be too confident. I have had a tough time losing any weight for a while and if I lose just one more lb., I will be d... Fri, 21 Jan 2011 10:40:14 EST Two pound gain. What is going on? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3924095 I am so disappointed that I have actually gained 2 lbs since the new year (1 lb each week). I have been exercising and doing the Boot Camp strength training videos. My foods have been much better than December - within the calorie range on most days. What is going on? Ironically, in December I actually thought I broke the plateau I had been in forever. Now I am going the wrong direction.

Possible problem:
1. Too much sodium. I had ham this week.
2. Not enough water. I a... I did not lose the full 41 lbs. I had planned, but I did lose 18 of it. When I started I was very focused on the weight only, but I have changed my focus to creating a healthy lifestyle that results in slow steady weight loss. In January 2010, I would have never imagined I would love running and I would complete a triathlon! And in just one year!

My accomplishments in 2010:

Comple... Yeah! I am feeling pretty stressed out and I need the break. I thought I could wait a couple of weeks. I had imagined it might even be good for me. But, after missing weighing in this Friday, I felt like I was having a hard time gauging if I was going overboard eating. Even though I had been recording my foods in the tracker, I couldn't help fearing that the holiday parties & foods were going to be too much for me. So, I broke down today and bought a scale. Wed, 6 Oct 2010 22:30:30 EST I bought a road bike! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3677965 I had become quite obsessed with the idea of a new road bike following my first TRI (completed on a mountain bike). I visited the local bike shops and tried out new entry-level road bikes. I decided on a road bike as opposed to a TRI bike. I found the correct size bike for me and searched Craig's List. On my birthday there was a posting for a 2008 Trek 1.2 WSD (one of the bikes I had tested). It turns out the seller was an old friend who I used to work with! What are the chances? Tested the... While it is fresh in my mind I thought I would write some reflections and suggestions for my next TRI. I will do the same event next September.

1. Be confident in the swim. Focus. Relax. And DO IT - I know I could have physically swam it better this year (my emotions got in the way) and I have a year to become a stronger swimmer. I did not have an impressive finish time, but I did the whole thing.

I was so nervous about the swim and I really let my anxiety get the better of me. Right before the swim, I panicked. I went into the water and forgot how to swim! I did a few strokes, panicked and kept stopping to doggie paddle or backstroke. I completed the whole swim in this pattern. I have been training all summer for this triathlon and I have now committed to do this by registering. Last May the school I work at started advertising and encouraging families and employees to participate. The triathlon is September 11th. The swim is 1/2 mile, the biking is 14 miles, followed by a 5K run. I worked there last summer and had a amazing experience. My 2 sons also stayed and volunteered. We cannot wait to go back. I will be living there (with little contact with the outside world!). I will eat the camp meals. I will wo... Mon, 14 Jun 2010 09:37:48 EST Oh no! Am I losing my "spark?" http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3315267 I am not doing so well with my "spark" this last week. I have not been making time to exercise. I really miss the routine I had started with running 3 times/week. But, I can't seem to make time to run until it is late. Last night I finally finished everything I needed to do (picking up kids from activities, errands, bills, etc) at 9:00 p.m. I obviously could not run outside. All I could manage to squeeze in was 30 minutes on the Wii Plus. I was busy all weekend, but I should have managed to... Tue, 8 Jun 2010 21:46:48 EST My camping plan http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3275603 I am going camping this weekend and will be away from my computer (and Spark people). To keep from ruining all of my hard work, I have a plan.

1. I have already bought most of the groceries and I included fresh fruits & veggies. I bought some "junkier" snacks that I know I can keep limited. But I did not buy items I know would lead to difficulty stopping (Cheetos).
2. I "planned" my meals and entered them ahead of time.
3. I will limit alcohol to keep my calories reas... Thu, 27 May 2010 23:42:55 EST My first 5K accomplished! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3248282 I did it! I ran at a pace of a little over 11 minutes/mile and finished in 34:31. Out of the 5,000 runners & walkers I placed about 1,500.

Especially after my "fall" on Sunday (see last blog entry), I am so proud I finished without stopping to walk even once (scuffed "road rash" face and all!). It was pouring rain as I drove to the race, but the rain cleared up just before the race started.

I am also proud of my 2 boys. I knew my 14 year old would do great. He runs cro... Wed, 19 May 2010 22:01:34 EST Wow! That hurt...now will I still be able to run the 5K? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3240094 I have worked so hard training for my first 5 K race this Wednesday. I HAD a plan for my last minute preparations. I WAS going to run 40 minutes on Sunday, 20 minutes on Monday, and rest on Tuesday. My plans have changed a little.

My 2 dogs are my running buddies. We started the C25K together in March. Except for the occasional bad weather days that I run on the treadmill at the gym, they go on every run with me. They have actually started to look leaner and have become better runn... Mon, 17 May 2010 19:35:48 EST 2 lb loss & I met 15 lb loss goal - Finally! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3228269 Woo hoo! I lost 2 lbs. this week after being stuck at the same weight for the last 3 weeks. And, I have met a 15 lb. goal! I was very careful with my foods and kicked it up a bit with exercise. I am so happy to see a pay off. The weight is coming off very slowly, but I am moving in the right direction. Since starting this journey in January, I have not had one week with a gain - I have either lost weight or stayed the same.

This week I will run my first 5K. I am excited and a littl... Fri, 14 May 2010 06:36:01 EST Not sure if ready to move to stage 4? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3216321 I guess this is week 18 because I have automatically moved to stage 4, "Spread the Spark" . I have mixed feelings.... I know I have made progress, but I have only lost 13 of the 41 lbs. I plan to lose. I am not sure if I should go back to stage 3, "Lifestyle Change." I have really liked the steps and I have taken them seriously. Will I get bored? Will stage 4 focus more on maintenance as opposed to weight loss? I would love input from others who have moved to stage 4. Mon, 10 May 2010 22:47:01 EST Stuck at same weight for 3 weeks now! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3207827 I am really getting frustrated now. The scale won't budge. I was sure I would lose at least 1 lb this week. Normally about every 3 weeks I stay at the same weight for 2 weeks, then I have lost 2 lbs. on the following week. Not this week! I am now running 5 k three times week. The only area I might be slacking is strength training. I will get back to doing that 2 times this week and I really should see some change next week.

On the positive, I am wearing a size smaller in pants. My... Sat, 8 May 2010 11:31:55 EST When I get overwhelmed.... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3172907 My "action step" this week is to write about a life issue that may cause me emotional eating.

When I get "overwhelmed" with day-to-day stress, I let my guard down. I cannot say that I have any specific life problems - I have a supportive family, a busy but rewarding job, and I am generally happy and healthy. But, I do sometimes feeling like I am "drowning" in all of the things I need to do. When things get out-of-control, everything in my life starts to feel disorganized. Mail pil... Wed, 28 Apr 2010 21:11:51 EST "Trouble Goal" - Weekends! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3133359 So my "action step" this week is to write about a trouble spot. Well....I guess that has to be weekends in general. The structure of the work week keeps me on a schedule Monday through Friday afternoon. I plan my meals (for the most past), plan exercise, and do not have a lot of free time to snack. But, Friday afternoon through Sunday night I struggle. I am still recording my foods and I usually get in at least one run on the weekend. But, I am almost always way over on calories.

... Sun, 18 Apr 2010 17:04:53 EST
