MEXGAL1's SparkPeople Blog MEXGAL1's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Watch the Theory of Everything This is the movie about Steve Hawking. We Loved it! We think that the actor should win for best actor. It was done very well. So we recommend that one.

FIL is in the new house as of yesterday. Mina the nurse moved her nursing home into the village in a new place that is less rent and therefore she can afford more help and have two nurses on duty at all time. Very good for her. FIL has a nice room with his own bath. There is still a lot to get done but things are looking goo... Mon, 26 Jan 2015 10:08:16 EST DH and my opinion so far on Academy nominations. American Sniper – very good. Sobering.
Selma – just OK in our opinion.
Boyhood – terrible. Long, boring, we couldn’t wait for it to be over.
Whiplash – not very good. Maybe just barely OK.
Theory of Everything – We have this but haven’t watched it yet. Probably tonight.

We will most likely see the others before the big night and I will give you my opinion of the remaining. I think it's funny that DH and I don't realize why some are nominated. I think it ha... Sun, 25 Jan 2015 10:51:59 EST Having a bout of esophagitis First of all I must say that I feel really blessed to have been healthy now since my last bout of esophagitis and bad flare which happened last May and my DH had to bring me home. For those that follow me that is when I went in the hospital in the states and the IV did no good. Unfortunately the last couple of days I have been having the symptoms of when I had the bad bout of esophagitis at the end of May last year.
That is when I had an endoscopy and went on meds. I still have some... Fri, 23 Jan 2015 10:25:47 EST Better today Feel so much better today. Yesterday was really rough. I hope I learned a lesson. thank you all for your comments and well wishes. I am already thinking of something healthy to make for the superbowl. Think I will do something with chicken in the crock pot with lots of veggies. I will search some recipes. For sure though I am committed to not eating all junk food all day!

Nice bright sunny day today. Will get out and walk the doggies and then do some errands.

Hop... Tue, 20 Jan 2015 10:29:22 EST Yeah Seahawks!!!

Here are photos of us all cheering hard from Ajijic Mexico for our Seahawks. Not sure who saw the game but it was incredible. The Seahawks were down so much that many here stopped watching the game. Even my DH gave up. But myself and two other guys stuck with it and got the treat of a lifetime. Seahawks won in over time with a touch down.
... Mon, 19 Jan 2015 10:19:49 EST Go Hawks! Big football day today. We need our Seahawks to win to go to the Super Bowl. Having a party here at Casa Watson but only Seahawk fans invited ; )

I had a nice lunch with a new friend. I met her when I was walking the dogs. It turned out that she and her DH are big Seahawk fans and will be here today. Also turns out that they will be looking for a house to rent for 2 years or so after their current lease is up in September. My DH still wants another adventure and would like to... Sun, 18 Jan 2015 10:04:00 EST Knitting So I started a new hobby. With my hands becoming more "crippled" with the connective tissue part of my Sjogren's, I figured that I should exercise them and use them as much as possible. I am already dropping things more often then I used to and the strength also has weakened.

So when we were up north I bought some yarns and different size knitting needles. I learned to do the basic cast on stiches, regular knit, and the purl stich. I will continue to practice and who knows perh... Wed, 14 Jan 2015 13:57:30 EST Yeah Seahawks!
We hosted the Seahawks playoff party yesterday. DH grilled some brats and I made baked beans(cooked all day in crock pot), and salad. I didn't eat a br... Sun, 11 Jan 2015 13:59:25 EST FIL's pain in foot Thought I would blog about this to see if anyone here has ideas. My FIL continues to complain about pain in his one foot. Two doctors have looked at it and couldn't find anything wrong with it. He is obviously using this as an excuse not to try and walk and such. It can't be anything that has to do with overuse as he never uses it. He is not diabetic so I doubt it is neuropathy. So, any ideas???

Otherwise life is good getting back to all my routines. Looking forward to tomo... Fri, 9 Jan 2015 10:23:18 EST Best part of getting back into my routine And that includes getting facials here in Ajijic. I have a wonderful gal who gives you an hour facial for like $35 and that includes tip. It is so relaxing and she is a lovely person. She always has the room nice and warm and soft music playing. Very nice!

DH and I watched a kind of cute movie yesterday with Bill Murray. It was called Love thy Neighbor. I would recommend it.

Other than that life is good getting back into routines.
Have a great day.
Sall... Thu, 8 Jan 2015 10:32:34 EST An idea I had an idea regarding our granddaughter and her being overweight and addicted to sugar. As I mentioned her Daddy gets it and we talked on the way to the airport about it and he welcomed our input to try and influence our DIL. But as I have said, she agrees in principle but then doesn't follow through. So I told my DH that I had an idea to see if I can find a Nutritionist/Dietitians in their area that we would pay for to work with our DIL to assist her with our granddaughter. I just can... Wed, 7 Jan 2015 10:17:01 EST Love getting back into routines Just finished up the second day of walking the doggies their 4 miles. DH has been joining me. He wants to once again eat right and exercise. He too was a little relaxed with both up north. I just let it go as we both are good about getting back to basics. I came home weighing in at is that is all good. Today we are taking friends out to lunch who watched our dog Morgan while we were away. We are going somewhere that I know I can order what I want.

Went t... Tue, 6 Jan 2015 13:04:36 EST One final vent about GD First of all it feels so good to be home. It was such a long day yesterday traveling. I hate having to get up at 4:30 to leave for the airport. I worry about getting up so I don't sleep. The good news is that we only had one flight that was late taking off. Only one other problem and that was on the flight from Houston to Guadalajara I sat in the middle and the man next to me was simply awful. I have never sat next to someone so inconsiderate. He was coughing and of course I was wearin... Mon, 5 Jan 2015 10:56:12 EST Grrrr So here I am blogging again about the granddaughter and her sugar addiction. Both my DH and I are very concerned. My DH wants to write a letter to his DIL and tell her how concerned we are and how they need to get all the sugar out of the house.

Last night she kept asking for a "treat". Just now her mommy was "making breakfast" as Lyla kept saying she was starving. I saw she was making toaster waffles so I took the opportunity to tell her about me babysitting the night before a... Sat, 3 Jan 2015 09:48:41 EST Sugar Addiction I am still off "the stuff" but still craving it. It truly is a drug to me. I also feel so sorry for our granddaughter as today they went to visit our DIL's parents and they give into her and feed her tons of candy and junk. When they came home she was in the bathroom with her Daddy sick to her tummy. then the parents went out to eat and my DH and I were in charge and feed them dinner....and wouldn't you know, she came up to me after dinner wanting a sweet. Poor thing is so addicted. I t... Fri, 2 Jan 2015 19:27:38 EST Still off sugar! I think I can safely say that I am once again off sugar. Yesterday was day four and yes, I still craved it but when I did, I did the old trick of brushing my teeth. That really helped as well as going to "bed" early and ready on my kindle to get my mind off it.

DH and I had a very low key New Years as it was way too cold here for us to go with the kids into Philadelphia for the fireworks. DH and I watched Gone Girl and it was good. I had read the book first and thought they did... Thu, 1 Jan 2015 11:25:13 EST Happy New Year Dear Sparks Buddies Another year is about to end and I believe I have been on sparks now for like six years now. I can't believe how time flies. Thank you all for your constant support. I wish you all happiness and most if all health for 2015!

Happy New Year!
Sallie Wed, 31 Dec 2014 12:46:14 EST Sugar Monster got me! So for someone who rarely eats was totally off it for a couple of years.....I gave in and had some homemade Christmas cookies. So now I remember why I opted to give it up!!!! It is like a drug to me. Once I start eating it, I can not stop. So one little cookie turned into like 6 or so...lost count. So today I have a sugar "hangover". I don't know how people do it that can have just one portion and stop! So I am trying really hard again today to not have any sugar. It's s... Thu, 25 Dec 2014 14:53:04 EST Family drama..what would Christmas be without it? Weird??? So for those who have followed me for some time you will get a kick out of this. For those who just dropped in some brief background(sister moved my Mom back to PA from Mexico and had mom spend 130,000 to build a MIL suite onto her house and then takes her SS check every month, has total control of Mom's money and has big parties using Mom's credit card and such. Mom really doesn't know that Sister is "stealing from her"...and only reason sister's husband puts up with it is that he wants he... Tue, 16 Dec 2014 17:52:26 EST Taking Grandma Jane out to lunch today. My Mother has been waiting patiently for me to go and see her...just so busy with the grandkids and after school duty and such. Anyway today we will take her out to lunch with the grandkids. She is looking forward to it and so am I. And the good news is that my DH suggested it and is going with us. For those of you who have followed me for years you know this is a big deal. As my DH and Mother had a big fight years ago and that is when my mother moved back up north to live with my sister... Sun, 14 Dec 2014 09:56:24 EST Snow in Philly makes it even more Chilly! I must say the white stuff is pretty but it sure makes my connective tissue issue due to my Sjogrens ache. Keeping busy and keeping my mind off it helps.

Grands are keeping me busy. Yesterday DH and I went and bought a sweet bike for the granddaughter for Christmas....Purple and Pink of course! I know she will love it. And for the grandson who is a sweet nerd we are getting him his first microscope. He is a riot...he comes home just about everyday wanting to do a science pro... Mon, 8 Dec 2014 11:07:26 EST All packed and ready to go! Not sure you all will hear from me tomorrow. It depends on how much time we have on our layover in Houston.

We went out to take our smaller dog to the home where Mina said she would look after her...well actually we are doing what we did before and pay her two boys to look after her. FIL still in bed and is complaining to Mina all the time about pain everywhere. it is really sad that he doesn't understand that he will be sore if he doesn't get up and move around. I have stopp... Fri, 5 Dec 2014 18:00:24 EST Poinsettia in my yard!

Thought I would's bigger than me!
They almost grow like weeds here in Ajijic.

Happy Holidays!
Sallie Thu, 4 Dec 2014 11:29:57 EST Thanks again for all the ideas and support. I love this site as I get many ideas and hear stories of things that you all have done and such. Many good ideas on how to make "spoiled" grandchildren have empathy for those less fortunate.

Chilly here in Ajijic this morning but the sun is shinning and it will warm up. I am working on organizing things like pay envelopes for help while away, along with their Christmas (yes I use that word!) envelopes with bonus. We went out yesterday and bought 32 cans of dog food for Morgan an... Wed, 3 Dec 2014 10:53:49 EST Commercial Christmas is hitting Ajijic Had to run an errand at Walmart and I was shocked to see all the Christmas stuff. When we first moved here 9 years ago I remember having to really hunt and search for things like xmas lights. It was kind of fun to go on the "treasure hunt". Now that we have a Walmart here they hit hard on all the holidays and way before it's time. this year there were even Halloween costumes in August!!! The Christmas stuff went up like 2 weeks before Thanksgiving. I kind of feel sad about it as I was a... Tue, 2 Dec 2014 10:22:32 EST Wow, Happy December! I can't believe it is the last month of 2014!!! Time sure does fly by. It seems to fly quicker as I age ; ) Looking forward now to heading north on Saturday...well accept for the weather.

Today we are meeting with a realtor to get an appraisal on the house we own next door that our friends who we bought the house for to hold for them. I bogged about this before...we bought it 4 years ago to "hold" it for them. They were supposed to sell their home in Seattle and move down. Th... Mon, 1 Dec 2014 10:24:08 EST Sunny but chilly. It is sunny but chilly here in Ajijic....but I am not complaining as this time next week I will be very chilly in Philly!!! Looking forward to the trip though. I wanted it to be a surprise for the grands but this family is terrible with surprises. Back when Tom jr. had his big release show for his new CD I wanted to just show up in the audience but his brother told him we were coming....grr...this time we told the son that we wanted to surprise the grands and their Mom told them we were c... Sun, 30 Nov 2014 10:29:51 EST Had my fill of Thanksgiving food. I mentioned yesterday that I was roasting a small turkey to have for leftovers here for DH and I. I made some healthy sides and it all turned out good. But I did over eat and am feeling it today. It is so funny how food can really affect your energy level when you over do it. It's chilly here today for Ajijic but I will get out and walk the doggies and that should warm me up. Funny though just when you need the exercise most (due to over indulgence), is when you have a "food hangover" an... Sat, 29 Nov 2014 10:20:48 EST Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! I cooked just about all day and took out all the old fashioned side dishes that everyone loves to the "old folks" home where FIL is. We had bought the turkey and the cook there roasted it. As I mentioned before I was a little nervous as Mexicans don't often make turkey as it's so expensive. I instructed him in my "Spanglish" about not stuffing it so it would bake quicker and told him temp and approximate time but also gave him a meat thermometer with a photo of a bird at the right temp. <... Fri, 28 Nov 2014 16:50:51 EST Hum, no power We had a big wind storm last night so typical of us folks here on the mountain we are without power. Fortunately we have a generator but it sure breaks the peace and quiet...but then again we were awakened at 5 this morning with the cohetes. At least I am not roasting the turkey here. Hopefully we will have power by tomorrow when I make the side dishes. Oh well just not going to worry about it.

By the way we went to our maid's son's baptism. It was a huge party and people were... Wed, 26 Nov 2014 10:47:20 EST Really sad all the news Just watching CNN and all the rioting and property damage. It's such a shame that people don't just demonstrate without all the destruction. None of us were there and don't know what really happened. My thoughts and prayers go out for Michael Brown's family as well as the Wilson and the Ferguson community.

On another note it is a bit chilly here in Ajijic but I do see the sun. Will get out and walk the doggies and then go get hair highlights and trimmed. Oh and I go and get t... Tue, 25 Nov 2014 09:41:08 EST good football weekend. As I said in another blog....last week end all three of our football teams lost. My DH even said he wasn't going to watch the Washington Huskies anymore as it was too upsetting. But what a difference a week makes as all three teams, the Eagles, Seahawks and Huskies won this week end. We actually were even cheering for the Giants and Eli.....(what??) as then it would give our teams a better standing. But they lost.

Today we are headed off to Costcos to get things for Thanksgivin... Mon, 24 Nov 2014 09:59:23 EST What to say in Spanish for Christening card??? So I always make my own greeting cards. Makes them more personal. I do have to giggle though as I try and make one for someone Mexican. Today we are invited to our maid's son's baptism. So I made a card with a baby on the front and some religious things. But what to say on the inside is a challenge. Anyone out there fluent in Spanish? I know how to say Much congratulations. But then not much after that. But that with the money should be fine.

So we will go for a bit but th... Fri, 21 Nov 2014 13:22:10 EST Watching Good Morning America Wow, lots of snow up north. Brrr. Will be packing warm clothes to go to Pennsylvania! Snowing where you are?

Today, here though plenty of sunshine. Woo hoo.

Got my pneumonia shot yesterday. I had the option of a 5 year shot or lifetime shot. Decided to do the lifetime and just get it over with. I am not a baby but it sure stung a bit and my arm still hurts today. But otherwise feeling fine. Will get out and walk those doggies. The only other vaccine I will g... Wed, 19 Nov 2014 10:13:56 EST Baby Rattlesnake

So my DH discovered this little (dead) guy in the street below our home. I guess the big rattlesnake I came upon must have had babies. I went on line and read that they have about 20 in the fall and the baby are born with poison right away although not as much venom as adults. And they don't have their rattle right away. I was looking close at ... Tue, 18 Nov 2014 09:30:17 EST Not a good football week end. My DH and I were so excited that we were going to see all three of the teams we cheer for down here in Ajijic. Well as fate would have it all three of our teams lost!!! The worse was our dear Philly Eagles. They lost really 20 to 54 or something. The game was so bad that the TV station didn't even show all of it as they switched to a more interesting game LOL. My DH had many "choice words" to express his mind. I do have to giggle a little to myself to hear him go on and on. ... Mon, 17 Nov 2014 09:41:19 EST Quiet before the storm Yes I am enjoying the quiet before the "storm". On the 21st the loud cohetes will begin. These are the fireworks that go off morning(around 4:30am, noon, and night(midnight). It is very nerve wracking. I know many of you have heard me speak of this before. Late November is the worse for the noise. I even read and article in the local paper this morning that talks of how noisy it will be. I wear ear plugs so that does help. My DH says though that he can not wear them so he will be espe... Sun, 16 Nov 2014 09:57:48 EST Nice time yesterday
Yesterday we went with friends to the annual Masters of Art fair. This is where artists and craftsmen come from all over Mexico and show their wares and sell them. Local people house them in their houses while they are... Sat, 15 Nov 2014 10:35:34 EST Dental appointment went just fine. I told my dentist not to take it personally but I hate going to the dentist. She laughed and told me she wouldn't and that I was not alone. The tooth that broke was an old crown and it was the crown that broke. So she prepared the tooth for a new crown. It used to be that it was one of the wisdom teeth crowns that would break. when I had them pulled last month all 4 had broken crowns. The good news is that I didn't have to struggle as much to keep my mouth so wide open since it wasn't a... Thu, 13 Nov 2014 10:32:52 EST Will not need umbrealla today to walk doggies. Yeah, woo hoo! Still a bit cloudy but not raining which is a good thing. Happy not to have to carry the umbrella today on my doggie walk. At least we don't get snow here. Watching the news and seeing places with snow already makes me shiver. I hope we don't hit snow in Pa. when we travel.

After I walk the doggies will get ready to go to the dentist. I bet those of you who said the oral surgeon might have put too much pressure on the next molars could have been right. Glad th... Wed, 12 Nov 2014 10:08:19 EST Brrrr Really very strange weather here in Ajijic. It is rainy and cold. I wanted to use the weather as an excuse not to walk the doggies their four miles but I forced myself out and walked with a jacket and umbrella. Everyone here is talking about the weird weather and wondering if our climate is changing. If we are going to have many days like today then we will have to get some type of heat in our home...LOL! I think tonight my DH and I will go to the outdoor living room and turn on the fire... Tue, 11 Nov 2014 18:18:08 EST Again overcast this morning. It is overcast but looks like it will clear later in the day. I will get the doggies on their walk.

Yesterday we went to visit FIL. He was sitting up in a chair. Woo hoo! Our new approach of ignoring his complaints seems to be working. He had said he was hungry for a spinach salad with just onion, cucumber, tomato and ranch dressing. So we took out those ingredients and showed the chef how to make it. Funny thing about Mexicans they find it so hard to make simple food withou... Mon, 10 Nov 2014 10:43:59 EST Nice party yesterday Our new insurance agent had a lovely party yesterday for his clients. Sure wish we knew him when we first moved here 9 years ago and secured him as our agent. My DH and I had a nice time. I even got "silly" with a couple of the gals there. One wanted us to take a photo of us with "empty" beer bottles. Of course I didn't drink the beer. In fact I also didn't eat all the meal. They served lasagna and salad. I ate my salad and then switched plates with DH so that he could eat the lasagna... Sun, 9 Nov 2014 11:02:09 EST Visiting a pain management doctor today So when I went to get my flu shot the other day the office where I went has a GP doctor who is a wonderful guy. He took hold of my hands and asked if I had pain. What a loaded question. Of course I have pain but I try not to complain. I just know it's all part of the connective tissue issue with my autoimmune disease. Anyway he told me he had a Pain Management doctor who comes from GDL on Saturdays and sees patients. He told me I should talk to him about my hands and feet. So I made an... Sat, 8 Nov 2014 09:47:28 EST Happy Friday! Hope you all have something to look forward to this week end.

Our insurance agent is having an event for all his customers. so far since we switched agents we are getting top level service. I still might not get reimbursement for everything but he and his staff are willing to fight the battle. and now I am educated as to what I need to do in the future to increase my chances of getting paid. so we will go to his party on Saturday. It should be fun.

We get TV feed fr... Fri, 7 Nov 2014 10:34:10 EST Yeah sunshine again here in Ajijic. What a difference a day can make. Woke up to bright sunshine today. Sure makes one get their mojo back. I am looking forward to the doggie walk this morning.

On another note, we finally reached out to the neighbors who live and rent the house next door to us to buy the house. The deal was that we bought it knowing that they wanted to move down here from Seattle. So when the house went on the market we bought it to "hold" it for them. It took them a while to sell their house i... Thu, 6 Nov 2014 10:23:48 EST
