MEXGAL1's SparkPeople Blog MEXGAL1's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Family drama..what would Christmas be without it? Weird??? So for those who have followed me for some time you will get a kick out of this. For those who just dropped in some brief background(sister moved my Mom back to PA from Mexico and had mom spend 130,000 to build a MIL suite onto her house and then takes her SS check every month, has total control of Mom's money and has big parties using Mom's credit card and such. Mom really doesn't know that Sister is "stealing from her"...and only reason sister's husband puts up with it is that he wants he... Tue, 16 Dec 2014 17:52:26 EST Taking Grandma Jane out to lunch today. My Mother has been waiting patiently for me to go and see her...just so busy with the grandkids and after school duty and such. Anyway today we will take her out to lunch with the grandkids. She is looking forward to it and so am I. And the good news is that my DH suggested it and is going with us. For those of you who have followed me for years you know this is a big deal. As my DH and Mother had a big fight years ago and that is when my mother moved back up north to live with my sister... Sun, 14 Dec 2014 09:56:24 EST Snow in Philly makes it even more Chilly! I must say the white stuff is pretty but it sure makes my connective tissue issue due to my Sjogrens ache. Keeping busy and keeping my mind off it helps.

Grands are keeping me busy. Yesterday DH and I went and bought a sweet bike for the granddaughter for Christmas....Purple and Pink of course! I know she will love it. And for the grandson who is a sweet nerd we are getting him his first microscope. He is a riot...he comes home just about everyday wanting to do a science pro... Thu, 11 Dec 2014 11:42:48 EST Gingerbread house on steroids.
Yesterday's project after the grands got their homework done was to build a gingerbre... Mon, 8 Dec 2014 11:07:26 EST All packed and ready to go! Not sure you all will hear from me tomorrow. It depends on how much time we have on our layover in Houston.

We went out to take our smaller dog to the home where Mina said she would look after her...well actually we are doing what we did before and pay her two boys to look after her. FIL still in bed and is complaining to Mina all the time about pain everywhere. it is really sad that he doesn't understand that he will be sore if he doesn't get up and move around. I have stopp... Fri, 5 Dec 2014 18:00:24 EST Poinsettia in my yard!

Thought I would's bigger than me!
They almost grow like weeds here in Ajijic.

Happy Holidays!
Sallie Thu, 4 Dec 2014 11:29:57 EST Thanks again for all the ideas and support. I love this site as I get many ideas and hear stories of things that you all have done and such. Many good ideas on how to make "spoiled" grandchildren have empathy for those less fortunate.

Chilly here in Ajijic this morning but the sun is shinning and it will warm up. I am working on organizing things like pay envelopes for help while away, along with their Christmas (yes I use that word!) envelopes with bonus. We went out yesterday and bought 32 cans of dog food for Morgan an... Wed, 3 Dec 2014 10:53:49 EST Commercial Christmas is hitting Ajijic Had to run an errand at Walmart and I was shocked to see all the Christmas stuff. When we first moved here 9 years ago I remember having to really hunt and search for things like xmas lights. It was kind of fun to go on the "treasure hunt". Now that we have a Walmart here they hit hard on all the holidays and way before it's time. this year there were even Halloween costumes in August!!! The Christmas stuff went up like 2 weeks before Thanksgiving. I kind of feel sad about it as I was a... Tue, 2 Dec 2014 10:22:32 EST Wow, Happy December! I can't believe it is the last month of 2014!!! Time sure does fly by. It seems to fly quicker as I age ; ) Looking forward now to heading north on Saturday...well accept for the weather.

Today we are meeting with a realtor to get an appraisal on the house we own next door that our friends who we bought the house for to hold for them. I bogged about this before...we bought it 4 years ago to "hold" it for them. They were supposed to sell their home in Seattle and move down. Th... Mon, 1 Dec 2014 10:24:08 EST Sunny but chilly. It is sunny but chilly here in Ajijic....but I am not complaining as this time next week I will be very chilly in Philly!!! Looking forward to the trip though. I wanted it to be a surprise for the grands but this family is terrible with surprises. Back when Tom jr. had his big release show for his new CD I wanted to just show up in the audience but his brother told him we were coming....grr...this time we told the son that we wanted to surprise the grands and their Mom told them we were c... Sun, 30 Nov 2014 10:29:51 EST Had my fill of Thanksgiving food. I mentioned yesterday that I was roasting a small turkey to have for leftovers here for DH and I. I made some healthy sides and it all turned out good. But I did over eat and am feeling it today. It is so funny how food can really affect your energy level when you over do it. It's chilly here today for Ajijic but I will get out and walk the doggies and that should warm me up. Funny though just when you need the exercise most (due to over indulgence), is when you have a "food hangover" an... Sat, 29 Nov 2014 10:20:48 EST Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! I cooked just about all day and took out all the old fashioned side dishes that everyone loves to the "old folks" home where FIL is. We had bought the turkey and the cook there roasted it. As I mentioned before I was a little nervous as Mexicans don't often make turkey as it's so expensive. I instructed him in my "Spanglish" about not stuffing it so it would bake quicker and told him temp and approximate time but also gave him a meat thermometer with a photo of a bird at the right temp. <... Fri, 28 Nov 2014 16:50:51 EST Hum, no power We had a big wind storm last night so typical of us folks here on the mountain we are without power. Fortunately we have a generator but it sure breaks the peace and quiet...but then again we were awakened at 5 this morning with the cohetes. At least I am not roasting the turkey here. Hopefully we will have power by tomorrow when I make the side dishes. Oh well just not going to worry about it.

By the way we went to our maid's son's baptism. It was a huge party and people were... Wed, 26 Nov 2014 10:47:20 EST Really sad all the news Just watching CNN and all the rioting and property damage. It's such a shame that people don't just demonstrate without all the destruction. None of us were there and don't know what really happened. My thoughts and prayers go out for Michael Brown's family as well as the Wilson and the Ferguson community.

On another note it is a bit chilly here in Ajijic but I do see the sun. Will get out and walk the doggies and then go get hair highlights and trimmed. Oh and I go and get t... Tue, 25 Nov 2014 09:41:08 EST good football weekend. As I said in another blog....last week end all three of our football teams lost. My DH even said he wasn't going to watch the Washington Huskies anymore as it was too upsetting. But what a difference a week makes as all three teams, the Eagles, Seahawks and Huskies won this week end. We actually were even cheering for the Giants and Eli.....(what??) as then it would give our teams a better standing. But they lost.

Today we are headed off to Costcos to get things for Thanksgivin... Mon, 24 Nov 2014 09:59:23 EST What to say in Spanish for Christening card??? So I always make my own greeting cards. Makes them more personal. I do have to giggle though as I try and make one for someone Mexican. Today we are invited to our maid's son's baptism. So I made a card with a baby on the front and some religious things. But what to say on the inside is a challenge. Anyone out there fluent in Spanish? I know how to say Much congratulations. But then not much after that. But that with the money should be fine.

So we will go for a bit but th... Fri, 21 Nov 2014 13:22:10 EST Watching Good Morning America Wow, lots of snow up north. Brrr. Will be packing warm clothes to go to Pennsylvania! Snowing where you are?

Today, here though plenty of sunshine. Woo hoo.

Got my pneumonia shot yesterday. I had the option of a 5 year shot or lifetime shot. Decided to do the lifetime and just get it over with. I am not a baby but it sure stung a bit and my arm still hurts today. But otherwise feeling fine. Will get out and walk those doggies. The only other vaccine I will g... Wed, 19 Nov 2014 10:13:56 EST Baby Rattlesnake

So my DH discovered this little (dead) guy in the street below our home. I guess the big rattlesnake I came upon must have had babies. I went on line and read that they have about 20 in the fall and the baby are born with poison right away although not as much venom as adults. And they don't have their rattle right away. I was looking close at ... Tue, 18 Nov 2014 09:30:17 EST Not a good football week end. My DH and I were so excited that we were going to see all three of the teams we cheer for down here in Ajijic. Well as fate would have it all three of our teams lost!!! The worse was our dear Philly Eagles. They lost really 20 to 54 or something. The game was so bad that the TV station didn't even show all of it as they switched to a more interesting game LOL. My DH had many "choice words" to express his mind. I do have to giggle a little to myself to hear him go on and on. ... Mon, 17 Nov 2014 09:41:19 EST Quiet before the storm Yes I am enjoying the quiet before the "storm". On the 21st the loud cohetes will begin. These are the fireworks that go off morning(around 4:30am, noon, and night(midnight). It is very nerve wracking. I know many of you have heard me speak of this before. Late November is the worse for the noise. I even read and article in the local paper this morning that talks of how noisy it will be. I wear ear plugs so that does help. My DH says though that he can not wear them so he will be espe... Sun, 16 Nov 2014 09:57:48 EST Nice time yesterday
Yesterday we went with friends to the annual Masters of Art fair. This is where artists and craftsmen come from all over Mexico and show their wares and sell them. Local people house them in their houses while they are... Sat, 15 Nov 2014 10:35:34 EST Dental appointment went just fine. I told my dentist not to take it personally but I hate going to the dentist. She laughed and told me she wouldn't and that I was not alone. The tooth that broke was an old crown and it was the crown that broke. So she prepared the tooth for a new crown. It used to be that it was one of the wisdom teeth crowns that would break. when I had them pulled last month all 4 had broken crowns. The good news is that I didn't have to struggle as much to keep my mouth so wide open since it wasn't a... Thu, 13 Nov 2014 10:32:52 EST Will not need umbrealla today to walk doggies. Yeah, woo hoo! Still a bit cloudy but not raining which is a good thing. Happy not to have to carry the umbrella today on my doggie walk. At least we don't get snow here. Watching the news and seeing places with snow already makes me shiver. I hope we don't hit snow in Pa. when we travel.

After I walk the doggies will get ready to go to the dentist. I bet those of you who said the oral surgeon might have put too much pressure on the next molars could have been right. Glad th... Wed, 12 Nov 2014 10:08:19 EST Brrrr Really very strange weather here in Ajijic. It is rainy and cold. I wanted to use the weather as an excuse not to walk the doggies their four miles but I forced myself out and walked with a jacket and umbrella. Everyone here is talking about the weird weather and wondering if our climate is changing. If we are going to have many days like today then we will have to get some type of heat in our home...LOL! I think tonight my DH and I will go to the outdoor living room and turn on the fire... Tue, 11 Nov 2014 18:18:08 EST Again overcast this morning. It is overcast but looks like it will clear later in the day. I will get the doggies on their walk.

Yesterday we went to visit FIL. He was sitting up in a chair. Woo hoo! Our new approach of ignoring his complaints seems to be working. He had said he was hungry for a spinach salad with just onion, cucumber, tomato and ranch dressing. So we took out those ingredients and showed the chef how to make it. Funny thing about Mexicans they find it so hard to make simple food withou... Mon, 10 Nov 2014 10:43:59 EST Nice party yesterday Our new insurance agent had a lovely party yesterday for his clients. Sure wish we knew him when we first moved here 9 years ago and secured him as our agent. My DH and I had a nice time. I even got "silly" with a couple of the gals there. One wanted us to take a photo of us with "empty" beer bottles. Of course I didn't drink the beer. In fact I also didn't eat all the meal. They served lasagna and salad. I ate my salad and then switched plates with DH so that he could eat the lasagna... Sun, 9 Nov 2014 11:02:09 EST Visiting a pain management doctor today So when I went to get my flu shot the other day the office where I went has a GP doctor who is a wonderful guy. He took hold of my hands and asked if I had pain. What a loaded question. Of course I have pain but I try not to complain. I just know it's all part of the connective tissue issue with my autoimmune disease. Anyway he told me he had a Pain Management doctor who comes from GDL on Saturdays and sees patients. He told me I should talk to him about my hands and feet. So I made an... Sat, 8 Nov 2014 09:47:28 EST Happy Friday! Hope you all have something to look forward to this week end.

Our insurance agent is having an event for all his customers. so far since we switched agents we are getting top level service. I still might not get reimbursement for everything but he and his staff are willing to fight the battle. and now I am educated as to what I need to do in the future to increase my chances of getting paid. so we will go to his party on Saturday. It should be fun.

We get TV feed fr... Fri, 7 Nov 2014 10:34:10 EST Yeah sunshine again here in Ajijic. What a difference a day can make. Woke up to bright sunshine today. Sure makes one get their mojo back. I am looking forward to the doggie walk this morning.

On another note, we finally reached out to the neighbors who live and rent the house next door to us to buy the house. The deal was that we bought it knowing that they wanted to move down here from Seattle. So when the house went on the market we bought it to "hold" it for them. It took them a while to sell their house i... Thu, 6 Nov 2014 10:23:48 EST Rain, rain go away... Wow, our rainy season should have well ended by now. DH and I even put awnings up that weS usually keep down during the rainy season. It started raining last night and is constant....not used to this. they say it's a hurricane off shore that is creating the extra moisture. but wow, not used to that this time of year. And normally it only rains at night in our rainy season but it is raining now and doesn't look like letting up. Gives me plenty of reason to do things inside today.
... Wed, 5 Nov 2014 11:27:24 EST Flu shot today Now that I have the oral surgery behind me I am going to look into the flu shot. My doctor wants me to get one. I have never gotten on but she really insists that I do so with being on the immune suppressant drugs. So I am going to look into it today. Not excited about putting crap in my body but will follow her instructions as she hasn't led me wrong so far. Do you all get flu shots?

Other than that today will walk the doggies and go meet with insurance agent. It seems that ... Tue, 4 Nov 2014 10:30:53 EST Good report today from oral surgeon. So my DH drove me the hour and half to my follow up appointment. The oral surgeon said that everything looked great and that I was healing well. He asked if I had any problems and I said that I didn't and even didn't have pain that I thought I would have. He was amazed. So happy with the good report. So tomorrow I will go get a flu shot and get that off my list.

It is sounding like we will go to Pennsylvania to be with the grandkids for Christmas. I am looking forward to it a... Mon, 3 Nov 2014 18:22:11 EST Nice time with neighbors Yesterday our neighbors (Toni of Toni and Chad) had her brother and sister visiting. We have met her brother many times but never her sister. So we invited them over for cocktails and then we went out to dinner. It was the first time both her brother and sister experienced our favorite steak house, Brunos. As always the meal was simply terrific. It's my favorite place down here. I really went overboard but soooo enjoyed it. The scale "rewarded" me with a pound up, which really wasn't b... Sun, 2 Nov 2014 13:49:38 EST Parents Anniversary today Sure miss my Dad. He was a great fun guy. If he had lived I believe my parents would have been married 60 years today. Or at least close to it.

My Mom moved back into my sister's home. For those of you who have followed me, you can most likely remember all the drama and trauma I had with her when she lived here in Mexico for 6 years. I love her but she is a "special person" who needs to be the center of attention. She gave my sister like $150,000 to build a MIL suite onto my ... Sat, 1 Nov 2014 11:45:36 EST Happy Halloween Not much Halloween going on here in Ajijic but plenty of Day of Dead celebrations. For those of you who have followed me for years you know that this is the time of year that I start whining about the cohetes(fireworks). We were aroused this morning beginning at 4:30 am! they seem to be getting earlier and earlier. the way our casa is positioned they burst at the level where our home is up the mountain. It would be okay if it were one or two but we are talking perhaps 50 - 60 boom booms.... Fri, 31 Oct 2014 13:47:49 EST Interesting walk with doggies yesterday. Near the end of our hike, Morgan was stopped dead in the calle. I wasn’t paying attention until I heard this rattling. I looked up and there was a huge rattlesnake in the middle of the road which was focused on Morgan and in striking position. Morgan was smart and when I said “no” she ran way from it and Pita (whom thank goodness was on the leash) and I went way around it. It was actually pretty with markings on its skin. I am pretty sure it was a diamond back. I am not afraid of snake... Thu, 30 Oct 2014 11:02:07 EST So frustrated with Insurance Company I worked really hard to compile all the information the insurance company requires to process a claim. Here in Mexico you must have something called a factura which is a formal receipt. You must ask for this specifically when being treated. Then you must get doctors to complete a two page form and then you need an order form from the doctor requesting you get the test and or procedure. And you have to get all of this for each thing that you are requesting payment for. I have spent many h... Wed, 29 Oct 2014 11:59:36 EST Chapala Day of Dead Scuptures/! Today my DH and I went over to the next village/town near us to walk along the malecon. Which is like a concrete boardwalk. As we walked we came upon some of the coolest statues/figures that various businesses made. We think it was for some competition. They were all in the theme of Day of the Dead. I got some photos and thought I would share.

This first one was made out of old blue jeans. So incredible!
<img src=""... Tue, 28 Oct 2014 19:13:41 EST Nice party for Mina's son Paco yesterday. It was a fun party with all of Mina's family Mina is my friend who is a nurse whom I met a few years back when she was working for someone else and was assigned to come to my home to put me on IV and care for me. Since then she started the home which FIL lives in. She was able to do so as we told her FIL could be her first client and he would be permanent. She now has 5 residents at this home and is opening a second one. These homes include 24 hour nursing services along with so many ot... Mon, 27 Oct 2014 11:32:05 EST Hum some sore muscles Yesterday after walking the dog their 4 miles I ended up helping DH take down a large evergreen bush thing with heavy branches. I hauled branches for like 2 hours. Not bad for 62 years old. But that was my limit. Had to stop. My muscles are telling me today that they are tired. I know I need to do more upper body strength building. I just hate doing it. The two DVDs that my SIL brought down for me sit unopened. I am going to try and push myself to do them.

Today in Mexico ... Sun, 26 Oct 2014 11:31:32 EST Day of Dead right around the corner Here in Mexico "Halloween" is sneaking in and children are beginning to dress up. the Walmart here is mostly responsible for it with costumes for sale. We will here children out on the 31st down the mountain yelling "be fair to treat or treat" and now going from house to house for treats. They never walk way up the mountain where we are.

The really celebrations here begin on November 1st which is Day of Dead for children and November 2nd being for adults. This is where they cel... Sat, 25 Oct 2014 11:02:01 EST No problem at all after oral surgery I am feeling great. Had no pain. Even got the doggies out for their 4 mile walk.

But the weird thing is that I am on a liquid diet and only had about 1000 calories yesterday but put 3 pounds on over night...what the heck??? I am not uncomfortable in my clothes at 113. I guess there must be swelling somewhere in my body but not sure where or what I reacted to. Will continue my liquid diet and see what happens. But very happy to have the procedure behind me.

Hope y... Fri, 24 Oct 2014 11:51:33 EST Bach home already from surgery We drove an hour to the oral surgeon's office. They were waiting for me. I had an IV put in me by the anesthesiologist where he had a bit of a problem with getting it in. He said "your veins look so good but are difficult."....ouch! I told him not to worry just push her in there as I was used to the pain and it won't bother me. Didn't want him getting upset. The when he got it in he said "y"!our veins looked good but are actually hard to get the IV in"...I told him I was used to it and ... Thu, 23 Oct 2014 15:19:42 EST Home in Ajijic We got home late Monday night and have been very busy getting ready for me to have the surgery tomorrow to get all four wisdom teeth out...ouch! Due to my Sjogren's they are putting me asleep to take them out so it will be less stressful. My DH is driving me and will take care of me. I have plenty of things I can put in the blender to be on a liquid diet. Not really looking forward to it but needs to be done.

It was hard getting back into the 4 mile dog walking everyday but did... Wed, 22 Oct 2014 22:01:44 EST Sun is gone in Seattle Crazy how I can sleep in Seattle. The darkness makes me want to hibernate. In Mexico just about everyday the sunshine wakes me. But here it's dark and I just want to hibernate.

Last night was a nice evening at Marie's parents house. Her Mom was having some fundraiser and had the ladies from her church there for a demonstration by a chef to make tapas. It was fun. Her mother was so gracious and introduced me to everyone as the future MIL. I am not shy so I made my way aroun... Fri, 17 Oct 2014 15:00:33 EST Great day yesterday First and foremost I was thrilled to met in person 3 sparks buddies. One I had met one of the ladies two years ago but the other two were new "met in persons" for me. We got together for lunch. It was so great to met in person. And after being in touch so much on Sparks I just knew I would love them in person. I was not disappointed at all. Just wonderful ladies and I felt blessed to met them and have them in my life. Here we are at lunch.
<img src="http://photos-ak.sparkpeople.c... Thu, 16 Oct 2014 14:32:56 EST Been so very busy I haven't bogged for a couple of days as I have been so busy! So many people to see during our short visit here in Seattle. We have been eating out way more than I had planned but I have just decided to eat what I can and not worry about weight but health. I have been feeling good which makes me so happy as the last time I traveled I ended up in the hospital on IV....darn Sjogren's!

Yesterday DH and I went to Bellevue, Washington to a fancy Jewelry store owned by a friend of o... Wed, 15 Oct 2014 12:35:56 EST First day activities in Seattle
Got together with dear friends and Tom Jr and his lovely fiancé Marie and hung out for a bit then went out for a late lunch. We wanted to show off Marie to our friends. Of course they loved her...what's not to love. I had Caesar Salad as it was the safest thing. It was one of those "fu fu" places with crazy menu. So at least I knew what I was getting.

Today is a great football day and we get to see bot... Sun, 12 Oct 2014 12:30:28 EST
