MDTWEETY's SparkPeople Blog MDTWEETY's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community 5 a.m. workouts! Last blog I mentioned that the hubs and I will be doing the 21 Day Fix. In order for both of us to do this together, we wake up at 5 a.m. every day (except Sunday) for a workout. This is the time we have before he has to leave for work and before the kids wake up. I have been enjoying the workouts a lot. The workouts change each day so it does not get too repetitive. They are challenging enough to burn serious calories and work up a good sweat, yet they are manageable and there are modificat... Tue, 2 Jun 2015 12:43:40 EST New workouts at my disposal - yay for variety! Hello Sparkies!

Have you heard of the 21 Day Fix? In a nutshell it's a set of 7 workouts on DVD along with color-coded containers for portion control, and an eating plan to follow. I am typically not one for gimmicky weight-loss programs but I know a few people who have done this program with pretty good results. My husband, who also wants to lose a few pounds, was interested too so we went ahead and ordered it. Our package came on Friday. We have yet to start the actual work but w... Mon, 25 May 2015 17:42:47 EST Do I want this bad enough? Earlier today as I was doing housework my mind started to wander (because whose mind doesn't wander when doing housework?) and I began thinking about why I am at such a standstill. And I wondered if -- for whatever reason -- I don't want this as badly as I thought I did. As with anything, we prioritize whatever is most important to us.

In 2007/2008 when i was successful at this weight-loss thing, I was all "Don't Stop Me Now!" I diligently tracked portions and calories, I paid att... Sun, 17 May 2015 23:19:51 EST "Nothing changes if nothing changes" Ahhhh! So I am late with the blog this week. Yesterday was Mother's Day and we were out and about for most of the day. I took 3 days off from working out (NOT good!) but today I kept my 20-minute date with Jillian. Overall, as I reflect on the past few weeks, I feel I am not doing enough to kick this weight loss into gear.

One of my favorite sayings is "Nothing changes if nothing changes." It is totally true. I can't continue to live my life the same way, or make miniscule changes... Mon, 11 May 2015 23:55:42 EST I am gaining momentum It has been a good week. I still haven't lost any weight but there have been many positive changes. I can't explain it exactly but in many small yet significant ways I am starting to feel like the motivated woman who once lost 60 pounds. All it took before was gaining a little momentum to propel me forward and from there I ran with it. This momentum didn't happen overnight, so I know that I need to be patient. But slowly I am feeling it. The renewed motivation to exercise. No excuses. Just do... Sun, 3 May 2015 10:11:57 EST "Gardening," plus my goal for the week As I mentioned in my previous blog, I am going to be checking in here on this blog once a week to evaluate how I am doing on my journey and detailing which goal(s) I am setting for myself for the week ahead.

I am using SparkGuy's weekly e-mail and blog as a springboard to my own. He always has something interesting and/or motivational to say. This week he talked about gardening, which is funny because my thumb is the opposite of green. What is the color of thirsty vegetation? Yel... Mon, 27 Apr 2015 00:18:58 EST Year 8 on SparkPeople and starting over I can't believe how fast time flies but I have been on SparkPeople since 2007. I joined in January with a sluggish start. Maybe I wasn't quite ready to embark on the journey right then. I had 60 pounds to lose. There was SO MUCH to look at on this site that I got overwhelmed. But in May something clicked for me. I got serious, got into my groove, joined SparkTeams, made some amazing Spark friends and off I went!

In 2008 I reached my goal weight and went on an amazing trip of a lif... Wed, 22 Apr 2015 18:26:20 EST Stealing some computer time Yes, I am still here. Tracking food. Tracking fitness. What I am still bad about is keeping up with blogs, groups and message boards. I don't get to play on the computer all that much these days. As such, it's not easy to Spark via phone except to track, which is actually easier -- what with the nifty scan barcode" feature.
I am going to set a totally manageable goal to blog here once a week. That I can do. So, Sparkfriends, leave me comments, check in on me, say hi, tell me what's new.... Fri, 9 Nov 2012 09:43:25 EST Wow, it has been a long time! Well, HELLO, to anyone who is still subscribed to read my blogs. Wow, it has been almost a year and a half since I last posted a blog. Where on earth did the time go? So much has happened since I last blogged! The most exciting thing has been the birth of my second child in June 2012. He is beautiful and sweet and amazing and is the love of my life, along with my 3 YO daughter, and DH of course. Given how big a part of my life Spark has been, I cannot believe that I went through my entire p... Thu, 18 Oct 2012 18:43:35 EST Respect for my body Last week was a tough week. Without going into all the details, I'll just say that my body failed me. Or, quite possibly, I failed it. I'll never know, but more than likely it was a combination of both.

All last week, I took a break from working out, except for walks (I feel OK with that) and ate with reckless abandon (NOT OK with that). I simply did not care what I ate, and most of it was junk. I took a break from tracking my food, which is also OK at times, but in combination wi... Tue, 31 May 2011 07:57:32 EST Tried a new workout today My gym recently added TRX suspension training. It's pretty cool and a great workout for the core and upper body, especially. For anyone who is curious what it is, here is a YouTube video (it will explain it better than I can).

I mentioned, this is new at my gym. They are doing demos right now to raise interest and let people know it is available. When I dropped my little one off in the kids area, the instructor ... Wed, 18 May 2011 16:10:51 EST One slice of pizza is an hour at the gym When I am at the gym and not taking a fitness class, I like to listen to Jillian Michaels' podcast to pass the time on the machines. Recently she had Bob Harper on the show, which was cool! They said something to a caller that really kind of hit me upside the head: One slice of pizza is an hour at the gym. Of course; a slice of pizza is around 400 calories. But when they put it in that context, it makes so much sense why so many of us are struggling and why weight loss can be such a slow pr... Tue, 10 May 2011 07:37:38 EST My New Toy

Wow, it has been ages since I blogged!! I am still here, just mostly tracking food/exercise minutes and reading message board threads that I am subscribed to. There doesn't seem to be enough time in the day for everything I want to do and I have been trying to limit my computer and cell phone time a little bit. Interestingly, my husband's phone dropped 6 stories at work yesterday and broke, so he is waiting for wor... Fri, 6 May 2011 07:42:03 EST My daughter is an escape artist OK, so...I have not been to the gym in several days and was looking forward to going to my Body Combat class last night! But my daughter, the Houdini, had other plans. :) She decided to escape from her crib yesterday afternoon, which sent us in a panic to Babies R Us for babyproofing items and night lights, and then when we came home it was time to convert the crib to a toddler bed.
I fed her dinner while DH converted the bed. It was after 9 when she went to bed. She was quite tuckered ... Tue, 5 Apr 2011 14:59:02 EST One-year anniversary of my first 10k Saturday was the Monument Avenue 10k in Richmond. I ran it last year; it was the first (and only) 10k I ever ran. It is such a fun race!! I ran with my husband and brother-in-
law.

Ironically, we were all in Richmond this past weekend for another reason (celebrating my father-in-law's retirement) but did not run the race. It was kind of bittersweet for the three of us to be there and not run. My MIL asked if we wanted to go watch the runners. None of us did.

My B... Mon, 4 Apr 2011 08:14:41 EST So NOT worth it! That burger I had last night, I mean. My stomach hurt when I got home. It's the next morning and I still feel have that "I ate something greasy, salty, icky" feeling. This is a good thing. My body is reminding me why I don't eat this way very often anymore.

On another, healthier, note: My neighbor received 50 strawberry seedlings yesterday and brought over a few for me. She was sucked in to buying them from an ad she received by e-mail some time ago. "AMAZING strawberries! As BIG ... Thu, 10 Mar 2011 07:58:08 EST I have to be good today Tonight my hubby's coworkers invited us out to dinner after work. The place we are going is a burger place. It is one of those where burgers cost double what they should and you can choose from all sorts of fancy toppings (peanut butter burger, anyone?) Seems like a fad going on right now. Anyway,I don't think they have any salads there. I am going to be in trouble with my food tracker, so I need to eat really, really well for lunch and get my exercise in for the day.
I am off to feed t... Wed, 9 Mar 2011 08:02:17 EST The cheesecake is gone! It's bittersweet. LOL. My mom's cheesecake is my favorite dessert in the world. Hubby and I were both sad to eat the last of it on Friday. But my waistline is happy. Thank goodness my husband likes cheesecake and enthusiastically helped me eat it.

I did try to stay on the lower side of my calories for the day so I could have the treat for dessert after dinner. And I somehow managed to resist all day and wait to have my one piece in the evening with hubby. So, I am proud of myself... Mon, 7 Mar 2011 07:55:24 EST Interesting new machine at the gym Yesterday a new machine at the gym caught my eye. It's a elliptical/bike hybrid. Basically you sit down on it like a bike but pedal like you are on an elliptical. There are also features where you can do chest presses and other strength exercises.

There are only two of these that I saw. I spoke with the person on the other one and she told me she liked the machine because it is easier on her knees. I decided to try it since it was new and I was dreading my treadmill workout that da... Thu, 3 Mar 2011 07:52:48 EST Body Combat fail I had been trying to coerce the hubby to take a Body Combat class with me at the gym for a loooong time. He doesn't usually take classes, but he he finally agreed to come to the class with me last night. My favorite instructor teaches on Monday nights. She makes the class so fun, so I wanted him to take her class if he was going to go.

So last night, he was all ready and even excited about it. I even introduced him to the instructor when we were waiting for the previous class to fi... Tue, 1 Mar 2011 08:45:13 EST Birthday cakes, oh my! So, yesterday was my birthday, and currently on the middle shelf of my fridge there is half of a Philly fluff cake and a whole cheesecake.

My best friend from high school came to visit Friday/Saturday and she brought the delicious fluff cake. It is from a bakery from Summit, NJ, where she lives and apparently this bakery is famous for this type of cake. If you don't know what a Philly fluff cake is (I didn't), it is kind of a pound cake made in a bundt pan, with powdered sugar on ... Mon, 28 Feb 2011 08:31:11 EST Girl Scout Cookies OK, so...I have 2 boxes of girl scout cookies sitting on my kitchen counter. UNOPENED, as of yet. Funny thing is, I didn't even order them. What's even funnier is that I got them from my DAD.

If you knew my Dad, you would laugh because he always watches what he eats and is one of those people who comments on how bad or good for you something is (at least to family and close friends). I always kind of feel guilty if I am eating something sweet or greasy in front of him.

... Thu, 17 Feb 2011 17:34:08 EST Adding 2 pounds to my ticker :( Yeah, I gotta do it. Weight is now 119. Gotta keep it honest. But the good news is, I get to look forward to moving it DOWN. 9

Hubby and I started out our day yesterday morning with a great 9 a.m. workout - spin class. I hadn't done the bike class in a while and kind of forgot what an amazing and fun workout it is. If I get on the stationary bike in the gym with the rest of the machines, I hardly break a sweat because I don't push myself enough. But in the class, someth... Sun, 13 Feb 2011 07:24:54 EST Keep on keeping on Ok, so last week I learned about what I need to work on. I set some mini goals and did OK, but not great. Every day, I met at least one goal but not another.

It's all good, because I am a work in progress. Over the past few days I have been out to eat a lot because whenever parents visit that is what we do. MIL was visiting Thursday and Friday, my folks were over yesterday. Restaurants are a weakness for me. I know I should check out the menu in advance and try to make a healthy c... Mon, 7 Feb 2011 08:58:33 EST Goal Results 2/4 OK, my final "results" post from my

1. Less time on my computer and iPhone: Ditto to the day before! Great with this one!! Barely on computer at all.

2. Track all my meals and measure portions: Did not track food. Had normal breakfast, out to lunch (very greasy pizza) and not too much for dinner. But I inhaled a bunch of chocolate. Not one of my best food days.

3. A workout every day (other than walking): No workout. :(

All in all, not great on th... Sat, 5 Feb 2011 07:51:58 EST Goal Results 2/3 1. Less time on my computer and iPhone: Great with this one!! Barely on computer at all.

2. Track all my meals and measure portions: Epic fail! Cheesecake factory for lunch, burger for dinner. No tracking.

3. A workout every day (other than walking): No workout. :(

Well, today is a new day. LOL.
Fri, 4 Feb 2011 08:22:43 EST Goal results 2/2 1. Less time on my computer and iPhone: Again, not great here. Today will be easy because MIL coming in and I won't be home much.

2. Track all my meals and measure portions: Yes to both!!

3. A workout every day (other than walking): Done! Went to the gym and did elliptical plus stationary bike.

Thu, 3 Feb 2011 08:32:56 EST Goal results 2/1 1. Less time on my computer and iPhone: The timer thing worked to help me gauge how fast time goes by when I am online. But I spent more time than allotted in the morning. I definitely have room for improvement in this area. Will work on it today. Maybe the thing to do is allow more time in the morning and less later in the day.

2. Track all my meals and measure portions: Did well with both! :)

3. A workout every day (other than walking): Took a walk AND the JM 30 Day Sh... Wed, 2 Feb 2011 06:52:35 EST How I did with my goals (1/31) I decided to blog every morning about whether I accomplished my goals for this week the day before instead of at the end of the week. That way, I won't forget anything and I can see my progress from one day to the next. So, without further ado:

1. Less time on my computer and iPhone: I did alright on this yesterday, but I could do better. Today I decided to set a timer for my computer time for three times a day, 20 minutes each time. This is to coincide with tracking my breakfast, ... Tue, 1 Feb 2011 07:55:17 EST Computer and iPhone are ruling my life Not a whole lot to say. I seem to have lost my "spark." I will get it back, I know. A healthy lifestyle takes dedication and consistency. I must work on it and stop being lazy and using winter blahs as an excuse.

This weekend was a little ridiculous. Yesterday's lunch was - ready?- a greasy burger, greasy fries and a milkshake. Calories? No idea. Probably more than I need for an entire day or even 2. Last week I barely worked out because of the snow. I could have found a way to ex... Mon, 31 Jan 2011 08:38:25 EST Too much munching yesterday So yesterday wasn't the best day in terms of my eating. Only tracked breakfast. I really should go back and track the rest of my food if I remember it. My meals weren't too bad, it was the silly snacking. I kept eating graham crackers and peanut butter. I ate too much PB yesterday for sure. I usually have 1 TBSP a day with my breakfast and on rare occasions I would have another TBSP with an apple or something. Yesterday it is all I wanted to snack on. It was emotional eating I think.
<... Wed, 26 Jan 2011 07:15:35 EST Surviving winter Lately I have been wondering why I left Phoenix. is cold here. It has been mostly in the 20s with threats of snow coming this week. Although today it is supposed to be in the 40s! We had a couple of days like that last week and it felt like spring. I am looking forward to getting out while I can. I also noticed that it is getting dark a little bit later. Starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Soooo looking forward to spring.

Yesterday my friend came over ... Tue, 25 Jan 2011 08:43:29 EST Me: 1, Box of Birthday Chocolates: 0 On Sunday my parents gave DH a box of candy as a fun little addition to his birthday present. Guess how many I've had? ZERO! That's right, zilch! This is quite a feat, since the box is on the counter in the kitchen staring me down whenever I am in there. I keep telling myself that those are HIS chocolates and it would not be nice of me to eat them. :) But dang, I hope he finishes that box between now and December. He is a slow chocolate eater!

Last night I made a healthy dinner tha... Thu, 20 Jan 2011 14:14:54 EST Mental funk...but exercise helped Hi everyone! I've finally dug myself out of the backlog of e-mails I had from late November. UGH...was that ever a chore! Speaking of chores, feels like that's all that my life is about anymore. When it's not e-mail backlog, it's cleaning, grocery shopping, and above all, trying to declutter and create storage where there is none. I think we've spent more time and money trying to come up with storage solutions for this house than we would have if we just bought a larger house in the first pl... Wed, 19 Jan 2011 15:14:14 EST You know you need to pump some iron when... ... your 17-month-old thinks it's fun to pinch the flab on your arms! Yes, she started doing that yesterday. I'm taking it as a sign that I've got to find a way to fit Body Pump into my schedule again. I love the class because it works all my muscles and it is structured so I don't have to think about how many sets, reps, etc. I'm doing. Plus, with an instructor showing you the exercises, it's easier to do them correctly. Machines at the gym bore me to tears, so Body Pump is really the only w... Thu, 6 Jan 2011 16:21:35 EST Hanukkah I am doing OK calorie-wise today. Tracking my food. But tonight is the first night of Hanukkah and I am planning to eat a jelly donut or two. 24 And debating on making latkes, which are NOT low in calories or fat. But I'm going to consider these special treats and just make sure I put in some serious time at the gym this week.
Maybe I won't make the latkes... Wed, 1 Dec 2010 16:38:43 EST Missing: motivation. If found, please return to MDTWEETY. Somewhere along the line in the past few months, I lost my motivation. Not completely, but enough for me to be concerned.
- My workouts have been lackluster.
- I am tracking sporadically.
-I am eyeballing portions rather than measuring everything out.
- I am eating too many sweets. And it's stuff that's on my "not worth it" list, meaning that the taste to me is not amazing enough for me to overindulge and pay the calorie price. Fig bars, animal crackers, and even those se... Mon, 29 Nov 2010 17:23:30 EST H2O kickboxing and Tai Chi Last night I went with a friend to her gym and took a fun and new-to-me fitness class - water kickboxing and water Tai Chi. Since it was the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, there were only four of us. Usually the class is a lot busier, she told me. While I still prefer kickboxing on land (I feel like I get a better workout) it was interesting to see how different the class is with the resistance of the water. This club also has water step aerobics, which I cannot wait to try. As for the Tai C... Wed, 24 Nov 2010 08:07:45 EST Nibbling at the Cooking Show Happy Monday, SparkPeople!
I hope all of you had a nice weekend! I am planning 2 visits to the gym today. I did not go all weekend, so I want to make up some time. :)

I have no idea how many calories I consumed yesterday. Dinner was around 450 calories. I had a small breakfast (mini pancakes with almond butter and milk) but for lunch I did not really have a meal, just tiny bites of various foods, which I know adds up. I went to the The Metropolitan Cooking Show in D.C. where I... Mon, 15 Nov 2010 08:18:55 EST Why do I get lazy in the afternoon? I've realized something about myself. I am a morning exerciser and if I miss a morning workout I lose my groove. I tell myself I will work out later, but about 70 percent of the time I don't. I want to figure out why that is and change it.

Yesterday my DH saved me. I did not go to the gym in the morning because it was dreary, rainy and cold outside. And since I walk there with Laila, it wasn't an option. It continued to rain all day so I assumed I was not going to go. But DH ca... Fri, 5 Nov 2010 07:58:03 EST Quiet morning to myself & felt like blogging... Happy Halloween everyone!

For the first time in my Halloween life, I will not be giving out candy to the trick-or-treaters. I had intended to buy candy, but last week I was at Kohl's and they had these cute little play-doh packages for Halloween as well as mini card games. I decided to pick those up instead. I hope I have enough, and I hope I don't get any teenagers because they WILL be disappointed.

I also don't have a costume for my little one. I decided that she did... Fri, 29 Oct 2010 07:21:28 EST Haven't blogged in a while Last week I sort of took another "break" from Spark and exercise. I still logged in and tracked my food somewhat but I didn't blog or spend too much time here, and I only made it to the gym one day. 40 But sometimes these little breaks are good for recharging the batteries, so to speak. So...I have missed you, Sparkfriends! What is new??

We have had BEAUTIFUL weather here the past few days. I have been doing a LOT of walking lately. With my mommy friends and my family... Tue, 19 Oct 2010 07:52:29 EST Hurray! We are keeping the gym! We worked it out to keep our membership by taking advantage of a promotion they were offering that gives us the rest of the year free. That will give us a little wiggle room with our expenses for the next three months. We also found out that we get a discount on our membership because of DH's job. Wish we knew that three years ago!!! Anyway, I am so happy that we can continue to go to the gym. I don't know what I would have done without it!

On the flip side, we are thinking of can... Fri, 1 Oct 2010 08:35:55 EST Body fat percentage...blah... The other day, on a whim, I asked one of the personal trainers at my gym to test my body fat percentage. After stepping on the scale (their scale weighed me in 2 pounds higher) I held onto a little device for a few seconds that zaps some sort of signal into your body and somehow comes up with your body fat percentage. News was not great. Mine is around 29 %. Now he said this is not as accurate as other methods but in any case, I have some work to do.

It seems like no matter how mu... Wed, 29 Sep 2010 17:21:43 EST How to tame a wicked sweet tooth Well, I don't really have the answer to that. I wish I could find the answer, bottle it up and sell it. :) All I know is that I struggle with it pretty much every day. The craving for something sweet usually strikes mid-afternoon and again in the evenings after dinner, around 8 p.m. Even when I have nothing really good in the house, I manage to find *something* sweet. Peanut butter and jelly on an Eggo waffle. An apple or banana with honey or chocolate syrup. Even a large chunk of baking choc... Fri, 24 Sep 2010 15:35:12 EST Scale teaser, food boredom So the scale has been teasing me. One day last week I got on the scale (after breakfast, even) and it said 119. I moved it to another spot and stepped on it again. And then moved it to another spot. Just to make sure. It still read 119. I did a happy dance because this was the first time I have been under 120 since before I had the baby!! The next day I got on the scale again (first thing in the morning, BEFORE breakfast) and it was 121. What the bleepety bleep?!?! Oh well, I figured it had ... Thu, 23 Sep 2010 14:34:00 EST Checked out a new gym, but pros and cons abound So yesterday, hoping to find a solution to my gym dilemma, I went to tour another gym in the area. This one is also walking distance and even a little closer to my house. It is a "community gym" (read "smaller") but the machines have a great view of the water and they have some intriguing things to offer that my current gym does not.

One thing they have is called TRX Suspension Training. This consists of resistance bands suspended from the ceiling. You can do various exercises wi... Tue, 14 Sep 2010 15:37:43 EST I might have to quit the gym :( DH and I had a discussion over the weekend and the gym is getting to be too much of an expense. He suggested that we stop our membership (we are no longer in a contract and are paying month to month). I know it needs to be done. With me not working and having a child to care for now, we need to cut back where we can. But I am feeling sad.

For three years, the gym has been my place to de-stress, to temporarily get away from "life", and focus on my health and fitness. Plus, it is... Mon, 13 Sep 2010 07:59:10 EST This and that... I realize I haven't blogged much lately. The little one finally went to sleep, so I am stealing some time to blog (while I should be cleaning, haha). Blogging here helps me stay on track and most importantly, stay motivated.

While healthier eating and fitness are always on my mind, I've been struggling with my program quite a bit lately and don't know exactly why. I guess I just really need a good kick in the butt.

I am now quite lazy about tracking my food. It has be... Thu, 9 Sep 2010 13:52:17 EST Please vote for Laila! Hi Sparkfriends!
I recently entered Laila's photo in the Gerber Generation photo contest for a chance to win a scholarship for her. The voting for her group started yesterday and she needs all the votes she can get. If you would like to and get a chance, PLEASE vote for her. :)
You can vote once a day, so visit and vote often!
Here is the link. Alternately, you can search for her under her name and city (Laila, Baltimore) or her entry number, 103655.
Thank you, thank you,... Sat, 4 Sep 2010 11:29:50 EST
