MARTYLYNN1's SparkPeople Blog MARTYLYNN1's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Sharing My Pretty Iris and a Few Thoughts When I weighed in this morning I realized I am only 4 pounds away from a goal I set for myself when I joined Spark People in Feb. of 2009. It has been a long road of ups and downs but I am getting there. When I reach that goal I will set a new lower one.

My iris are in their full glory. It rained for 2 days so some are a little beaten down but there are a lot that have just bloomed out that are beautiful. I love them! Just wished they lasted longer.

<img src="http:... Fri, 15 May 2015 15:23:10 EST More Pictures From Our Camping Trip Before I post pictures I want to share my disappointment. I have been doing a virtual walk across America by logging my miles walked on a site from Berkley. I started in Virginia and would end up on the coast in Oregon. I had made it as far as Idaho so was excited to see the end of my trip not far ahead for me. When I tried to log my miles yesterday I got a message that the exercise site had been retired. I will really miss doing that. It was fun to see an actual photo and map of where... Thu, 7 May 2015 19:52:42 EST Fun 5 Days in the Desert (Pictures) It was nice to get away for a few days. Where we camped there was no phone, tv, electricity or Wifi so I had to start over on my log in streak and catch up on posts and email when I got home. I also had lots of laundry and chores around here to catch up on.

This was our home away from home for 5 days.

Three of the days we did some fishing as well as exploring some trails. We didn't catch anythin... Wed, 6 May 2015 12:52:37 EST Catching Up Some of you know that I was diagnosed as having pre-diabetes in September. It was a real eye opener for me and in some respects the best thing that could have happened. It caused me to come to terms with how I was eating and dealing with my emotions. I can give all kinds of excuses. I had lost down to within 15 pounds of my goal weight when we moved to Washington. My husband started looking for work out here to be near his parents as soon as my mother passed away. It seemed like I didn... Tue, 6 Jan 2015 18:25:23 EST Happy Birthday to Me! Trying to count to 3 before I blow! (Pun intended) This birthday is certainly different than I expected. On the positive note, 18 years ago I gave myself the gift of quitting smoking. I have never regretted that. Just wish I had been wise enough to do it sooner. I had my annual checkup with the dr. Wednesday and got the news that I am now considered pre-diabetic. What a wake up call that was. It is time to quit stalling and seriously do something about my weight and start eating healthier. I do exercise but that is not enough. My DH l... Sat, 6 Sep 2014 15:40:56 EST Cooler Weather Today & More Pictures The weather in Central Washington has cooled down. I suppose it is more normal for this time of year since they have been saying we were having above normal highs. I miss the near 70 days when I could open the house up. Probably not smart to do since I have allergies. Since it is cooler and a little breezy here I am going to pop in a DVD and exercise inside today.

I am sharing the last of my pictures from visiting the kids on the Olympic Peninsula.

At the top of this... Sat, 19 Apr 2014 14:35:23 EST Change of Seasons Brings Change of Exercise and Sharing More Pictures My walking buddy is busy now with her grandchildren's ballgames and other activities in the evenings so I am back to walking alone. Actually with spring here and all the landscaping we have I am doing more yard work than walking. I can tell I am using different muscles because I had some soreness in my arms and legs after the first day of getting out there attacking the yard. I am still not sure why we bought a place with all this landscaping because it really isn't our thing. I have alwa... Tue, 15 Apr 2014 13:42:40 EST More Pictures of My Time Visiting Family on the Coast I am posting more pictures of my day with granddaughter Molly taking pictures.

<img src="h... Sun, 13 Apr 2014 21:53:28 EST Sharing My Vist to the Coast With You I have been home for less than a week and I already miss my family and all the opportunities to get out and be one with nature. I did miss my DH while I was over there though. The city parks here in town are just not the same and the state park my friend and I walk is a 12 mile drive one way from where I live. Other than the days it rained I was out hiking and exploring with my family. I hope my grandchildren will have fond memories of these times spent together long after I am gone. I d... Sat, 12 Apr 2014 13:15:00 EST Spring Is In The Air Our days are for the most part in the 50's or 60's now for highs and we are starting to see lots of robins. It is nice to not have to bundle up so much to get out side. My walking buddy and I went to the state park not far from here Thursday to walk and can't wait to get back. We found some primitive trails with lots of ups and downs and twists and turns. It was much more of a work out than walking at Lowes or the mall. I think one of our trails there was thanks to the deer. That seemed... Sat, 22 Mar 2014 12:39:18 EST Something For My Friends Who Are Sick Of This Winter! GOD CREATED THE MIDWEST

On the sixth day, God turned to Archangel Gabriel and said,

"Today I am going to create an area of land called The Midwest. It will be a land of outstanding natural beauty. It shall have tall hills and rolling plains full of game and eagles, beautiful sparkling lakes bountiful with bass and streams full of trout, forests full of deer and turkeys, valleys with fertile soil with an abundance nutrients to grow things, and rivers teeming with fish... Tue, 4 Mar 2014 12:14:30 EST Our Newest Grandchild Arrived Today! Isn't She Beautiful? This is our new granddaughter Calia. (Kah-leah)

Unfortunately they live in Alabama so have no idea when we will get to meet her in person. 39

One of my Spark friends remarked in her blog about walking at Home Depot. I had never thought of walking somewhere like that. A friend and I have been walking at the mall some. She works days so it is dark by the time she is free ... Tue, 25 Feb 2014 20:48:58 EST No Chocolates and Flowers For Me! (Something much better) My DH surprised me yesterday by cooking us dinner. Since he works evenings we are used to having our main meal of the day around 1 pm. So even though he was off yesterday that is when we had our valentines dinner. I love seafood but due to the cost it is a rare treat for us. DH surprised me with king crab, shrimp, baked potato and coleslaw. I am sure I exceeded my calorie limit but since this is not an every day meal I wasn't too worried about. it. I don't think I did too bad since we d... Sat, 15 Feb 2014 12:34:31 EST This is Where I Am On My virtual Walk I started logging my miles on a virtual walking site in 2010. I started in Virginia and will end in Oregon. If I had been consistent logging my miles I would have been there long ago but I got lax and then just forgot about it. I started logging again a few months ago and I am now in Colorado. I passed the Royal Gorge a few days ago. I enjoy seeing pictures of what the area looks like as I take my virtual walk. This is where I am now!

<img src="http://photos-ak.sparkpeople.c... Fri, 14 Feb 2014 12:36:33 EST Here I go again! & pictures I gritted my teeth and updated my ticker to my current weight.

My old enemy depression got its claws in me and I turned to food for comfort. We have lost 2 dear friends in the past few months back in Missouri. It has been so hard to be so far away from friends and family back there. I have suffered from acute home sickness and the cold dreary winter we have had has not helped. The last couple of weeks have been much better but now I have to try to reverse the damage I have d... Sun, 9 Feb 2014 14:13:16 EST Day 30 of Thankfulness So glad my DH has the day off today. After 23 years of marriage I still look forward to spending time with him. We plan to go grocery shopping for his mom later and will pick up a few things for us too. Other than that will just hang out here at home.

I am still doing well with my food. I notice the cravings are going away. Thanksgiving I was satisfied with a small piece of pie. I haven't been rummaging through the cabinets looking for a sugar fix like I would have in the pa... Sat, 30 Nov 2013 12:32:42 EST Day 28 & 29 of Thankfulness & Grandma's Rules (funny) I am thankful for a fun day spent with friends yesterday. Today I am thankful for a quiet day at home.

I made it through Thanksgiving without gaining any weight. In fact I actually lost a pound this week! I gave away the leftovers from the desert & sweet potato casserole I made so I wouldn't be tempted to eat it. Now to another healthy week of eating!

I got this email this morning. It is a little late for Thanksgiving but I thought it was cute.

GRAN... Fri, 29 Nov 2013 13:45:21 EST Day 27 of Thankfulness & Mom's Recipe Box I am thankful that I have Mom's recipe box. I was looking through it for a recipe yesterday and so many memories came flooding back. It is a comfort to see those old recipes in Mom's familiar hand writing. When I am gone the box will be passed on to my daughter. She will occasionally call asking me, "do you have grandma's recipe for.....?". The recipe card shown is a recipe Mom copied from her mother's recipes. We had this fruit salad for every holiday dinner when I was growing up. Fir... Wed, 27 Nov 2013 14:46:48 EST Day 26 of Thankfulness I am thankful mu DH doesn't mind stopping at the store on his way to work to pick things up for me. It saves me from having to get out fighting the crowds and frees me up to get things done at home. We stopped at Walmart on our way home from church Sunday to pick up some things for my mother-in-law and a few thins for us. I could not believe all the people! The parking lot was full and they had all but 2 lanes open to check out. I can't imagine what it will be like closer to Christmas! <... Tue, 26 Nov 2013 17:11:25 EST Day 25 of Thankfulness I am thankful for good neighbors. I have been blessed throughout my life to have had good neighbors everywhere I have lived. Our neighbors here went out of their way to welcome us to the neighborhood. The first big snow we got after moving here a neighbor we hadn't even met yet showed up and bladed our drive. Our neighbor next to us has volunteered to watch our place & take care of the dog when we have taken trips. They are also the ones who invited me to come to dinner Thanksgiving eve.... Mon, 25 Nov 2013 12:30:00 EST Days 23 & 24 Of Thankfulness Yesterday I was reminded of how thankful I am for the internet. I can sit in the comfort of my home and do my Christmas shopping. I also buy postage & print labels on line for packages I send to love ones. I catch up on the news and keep in touch with my friends and family on here. I can not imagine life without the net now that we have it!

Today I am thankful for the missionaries who spoke at our church this morning. Their message was so interesting and inspirational and the ... Sun, 24 Nov 2013 18:43:14 EST Day 22 of Thankfulness Today I am thankful for our central heating system. It has been really cold here the past couple of nights and the furnace has run nonstop. Thankfully we have a heat pump that is fairly economical. The 2 houses I lived in when I was a kid growing up in rural Missouri had fuel oil heat stoves. The house I lived in the first almost 12 years had a stove in the living room and one in the dining room. My room was off the living room and my parents off the dining so the bed rooms weren't too ... Fri, 22 Nov 2013 14:06:13 EST Day 21 of Thankfulness I am thankful for books. I love to read! From the Bible to Gone With The Wind, love stories, historical, fact, fiction or murder mysteries, I love to read. I can live an adventure or travel to exotic places all from the comfort of my home. A friend who visited this summer was delighted with my books. She said she could find something to read at my house no matter her mood.

I have done well the past couple of days with my food choices. When I step on the scale tomorrow I will... Thu, 21 Nov 2013 18:30:51 EST Day 20 of Thankfulmess I am thankful for the natural world that God provided us with. I have always loved being outdoors. I was never really into sports but I love to camp, fish and hike among other things. When I was a kid I was known as a tom boy. I guess that label still fits. Every chance I got I was off riding horses with my friends or exploring the woods. I was lucky enough to marry someone who enjoys a lot of the same things I do.

I did well with my eating yesterday. I stepped on the scale ... Wed, 20 Nov 2013 15:00:00 EST Day 19 of Thankfulness Today I am thankful for this wonderful, surprise mild fall day. When I last checked the weather it was supposed to be low 50's with a chance of rain. At 10:15 am it is now 61 and partly cloudy !

I didn't do as well yesterday with my food. I didn't keep track of it at all. DH had the day off and I find that when he is home I tend to get off track. Today he goes back to work and I plan to do better! Tue, 19 Nov 2013 13:22:09 EST Day 18 of Thankfulness I am thankful they turned the land across the road back to pasture and there are cattle there again. The fall we moved here there were cattle in the field across the road but the next spring they took them out and plowed the land and planted wheat. I have nothing against wheat as a general rule. They don't seem to know about no till out here and when they would disc the field they would go over it and over it till it was dust. Usually when they disc it would be a windy day and our house ... Mon, 18 Nov 2013 13:34:50 EST Day 17 of Thankfulmess It may seem like a silly thing to be thankful for to some but I am thankful for our dog Lexie. She has brought a lot of joy into our lives this past 7 years. I got her right after my Dad died and she was a great comfort. She is so happy to see us when we get up in the morning. The way she wiggles and grins you would think she hadn't seen us for weeks instead of overnight.

I made it through day 2 of staying within my calorie range. Here's to day 3!

521 Sun, 17 Nov 2013 14:31:12 EST Day 16 of Thankfulness Today I am thankful for unlimited long distance. I remember when I had limit my calling and watch the clock when calling long distance so the phone bill would be within my budget. Now I pay a flat rate and can talk as often or as long as I want. It is so nice to be able to reach out & touch friends and family anytime I want.

I made it through yesterday and stayed in my calorie range. I was on the high side but I did it. I have my food planned and should do well today too!
... Sat, 16 Nov 2013 13:18:44 EST Day 15 of Thankfulness I am thankful for the grandparents I had. I have so many fond memories of spending time on the farm with them. My grandmother was a wonderful cook and started teaching me to cook when I was 11. I still love to cook. Sometimes that is not a good thing. ;-) My grandpa taught me how to tie a hook on my fishing line so it wouldn't come off. I still think of him every time I do that. Dad always did it for me up to that point. I still have the clothes that grandma sewed for my doll. They g... Fri, 15 Nov 2013 15:26:11 EST Day 14 of Thankfulness Today I am thankful for Ibuprofen. I woke up with a sore throat and a headache. Feel a little better after taking the Ibuprofen. Hopefully this will be a short lived illness!
527 Thu, 14 Nov 2013 14:15:08 EST Day 13 of Thankfulness I am thankful for the mild fall weather that we are having. Fall is my favorite time of year. By now the snow could be falling here but instead we are having days in the 50's. I know it won't last but am enjoying while it does.

Today I am going to try to kick myself into gear and turn the apples waiting in the garage into apple butter. We have about 35 gallon bags of dried apples to share with the kids, grandkids and enjoy ourselves. A lot of the apples we have left are starti... Wed, 13 Nov 2013 14:29:57 EST Day 12 of Thankfulness I am thankful for Sparkpeople. I love all the support and resources available for us. I have made some good friends and love being able to interact with others here. I use the recipe link often and am lucky to have a husband who doesn't mind trying out new recipes with me.

I had an email notice of a Yakima team walk planned for next week. I hope the weather holds and I will be able to make it. They had a walk last week but only gave one days notice so I wasn't able to join in... Tue, 12 Nov 2013 15:19:54 EST So Very Thankful to All Who Have Served! Todays thankfulness is a no brainer. Without our military, those presently serving and those who have served in the past, we would not have the freedoms we have today. My father-in-law was at Normandy on D-Day. I have had relatives who served in wars from the Revolutionary up to the current conflicts. I am proud to say, I have had family members who have served in every branch of the military. My father did not pass his physical for the Army when WWII broke out due to a poorly healed fr... Mon, 11 Nov 2013 13:52:48 EST Day 10 of Thankfulness Today I am thankful for music. I have always loved music. When I was a kid most of my allowance & babysitting money went to by records. I still have all of my albums. When I am feeling down I can find a tune to perk me up or if I want to mellow out there is music for that too. It is a rare day in my home when there is no music playing.

The last couple of days my exercise has consisted of cleaning for the most part. I hadn't really thoroughly cleaned since before vacation. N... Sun, 10 Nov 2013 21:56:33 EST Day 8 & 9 of Thankfulness Yesterday I was thankful that I had parents who taught me right from wrong and to be respectful of others. Today I am thankful for our church families both where we are living now and in Missouri. I can't tell you how much it means knowing that we are in the company of others who will step up and help those in need. We are all there to help and support each other too. We are truly blessed to have such people in our lives.

I didn't get around to making a blog post yesterday. We... Sat, 9 Nov 2013 12:25:59 EST Day 7 of Thankfulness & a Break In! I am thankful that I live in a country where I have the many freedoms that we have here. I may not agree with what our government is doing at certain times but I can voice my opinion without fear of retribution. I can vote, drive and am free to do other things that I might not be able to do if I lived elsewhere. I can not think of any better place to live.

We got a call this morning from our church secretary letting us know the church had been broken into. This is the forth tim... Thu, 7 Nov 2013 21:39:52 EST Day 6 of Thankfulness I am thankful for my warm cozy home. I know there are a lot who are not as fortunate as we are.

The winter pattern has set in for Washington. Today is another cool damp day and from the sound of the forecast it is going to get colder. Winter is not my favorite season and I am still not used to it getting dark so early.

I did my strength training yesterday. I can tell I need it. Since getting back to it I am starting to feel some soreness from laying off it for so ... Wed, 6 Nov 2013 20:27:41 EST Day 5 of Thankfulness I am thankful that I am healthy. I have asthma and high blood pressure but both are controlled with medication. I know of so many people now who are dealing with serious health issue. I am so thankful that I am doing well and able to stay active.

Last night was just one of those nights when I couldn't get to sleep. Last time I looked at the clock it was almost 2am. Then at 6:15am the phone rang. It was a wrong number! Grrr!!! I had just gotten back sound asleep when a friend... Tue, 5 Nov 2013 15:02:15 EST Day 4 of Thankfulness I am thankful for my friends both near and far. Can't imagine my life without them. I am still friends with my first real friend from grade school. We went to country school and hit it off the very first day. She moved from Missouri to New Jersey at the end of the second grade. We have managed to keep in touch through letters, phone calls and visits through the years. Our first letters were of the "How are you I am fine" variety and then progressed through teenage crushes & music to mar... Mon, 4 Nov 2013 14:17:28 EST Day 3 of Thankfulness & More Pictures 3. I am thankful for my family. We are scatted from Alabama to Alaska but thankfully with modern technology we are a close as a phone call or click of a mouse.

We came across these guys last week when we were camping.

<img src="http:... Sun, 3 Nov 2013 16:30:22 EST 30 Days of Thankfulness & More Pictures Thirty Days of Thankfulness has started on facebook and it reminded me that I need to concentrate on what I have. Of course I am a day late starting this!
20

1. I will start by saying foremost I am thankful for my Lord & Savior who loves me unconditionally.

2. I am thankful for my wonderful husband who has put up with me for over 23 years.

When visiting Missouri we stayed part of the time with some dear friends. This is the view from the... Sat, 2 Nov 2013 13:44:12 EST Readjusting & More Pictures From June until a few days ago life around here was planned on visitors and trips. In my "spare" time in between I was busy canning & putting up stuff from the garden. Now all of a sudden it is fall and nothing is planned. No one is scheduled to visit, vacation is over, we took our last camping trip for the year and I won't be taking any solo trips over on the coast to see the kids. I have plenty to do, it is just a matter of kicking myself into gear to do it. I seem to have run out of s... Fri, 1 Nov 2013 18:48:03 EST Random Thoughts and Vacation Pictures Things have finally settled down for us. Not expecting company any time soon and vacation, trips to coast and camping are behind us for a while. The house smells of apples and cinnamon. I put up 16 quarts of cinnamon applesauce that I will share with family and friends and we have apples drying for winter snacks and sending to the grand kids. The weather is turning cold and I am thinking of inside projects that need to be done. I am having no problem getting back to my exercise routine b... Wed, 30 Oct 2013 21:31:41 EST Touching Base and Sharing Some Sound Advice I still have not even looked at our vacation pictures. On vacation for 3 weeks then home for 4 days and over to the kids for a week and now playing catch up here at home. Now we will be leaving Thursday for a 5 day camping trip, the last of the season. Hopefully when we get back from that things will settle down.

I saw this on line today and thought it contained a lot of wisdom.

Advices from An Old Farmer.... I have been trying to get things ready for our camping trip Thursday and I have an appointment tomorrow to get my eyes checked. When we get back from camping I will be heading over to the coast the next morning to spend a week with the kids. I am going to be doing some babysitting to give my daughter & son-in-law a chance to spend some alone time. When I return I will be bringing one of the g... Tue, 25 Jun 2013 12:53:07 EST Part 2 of Our Trip to the Mountains Pictures I had a nice surprise to start my day. I stepped on the scale this morning and found that I have lost a pound! YEA!!!! Sunday is my weigh in day so hopefully it will still be gone then and maybe another pound will have joined it!

Here are more pictures of our hiking trip to the mountains.

<img src="http://phot... Wed, 19 Jun 2013 18:08:02 EST My Favorite Way to Exercise and Pictures of Our Trip to the Mountains I had planned to post this blog sooner but with summer comes lots of added chores and time gets away from me. I have been on a plateau but finally broke it last week and lost a pound. When I weighed this week I am the same as last week. I am determined not to get discouraged. I know this is a life long journey. I am on a steroid long term and it makes it so easy to gain and so hard to lose but I will succeed!

I am finally posting pictures of our day hiking in the mountains. We... Tue, 18 Jun 2013 12:30:11 EST A Fun Day With DH and Sharing Some Photos We took a trip to the mountains for our first serious hike yesterday. I was sure I would have leg cramps last night. I usually do after the first hike but thanks to the exercise I have been getting that was not the case! WooHoo! We decided to explore some new areas at a higher elevation. We were a amazed to find a campground with several people there. I don't think we will be hauling our travel trailer that far up that gravel road. We hiked till we started finding snow drifts that hadn... Sat, 1 Jun 2013 14:45:34 EST Remembering Those Who Have Served

My father-in-law was a Normandy. Three of my uncles served in WWII. My father got as far as his physical but because of a broken arm that hadn't healed properly he was not selected so worked building planes for those who did serve. Mon, 27 May 2013 14:20:31 EST A Tribute to MY Dad! Ninety seven years ago today my father was born. He was just an average man. Wasn't famous or wealthy but he was my Dad. I lost Dad in 2006 to Alzheimer's disease. Really the disease took the man I had known a couple of years before that. The nursing home where my father spent his last year and a half had a memorial service every six months for families of residents who had passed. A lot of the employees attended the services as well. We were encourage to write something to read as a ... Sun, 26 May 2013 18:12:39 EST
